10/28/2008: Halloween Countdown ‘08: The Beetlejuice Gross-Out Meter!

In 1990, Kenner and Satan teamed up to bring us a fairly enormous Beetlejuice toy collection, with figures, playsets and costume kits based not on the cartoon show, but the actual movie.

The line always struck me as a little odd. While I’d openly credit Beetlejuice for breaking Zagnut bars out of a centuries-long popularity rut, I don’t necessarily believe that children had enough of a passion for the titular character to buy a bunch of action figures based on his movie. I mean, Kenner went so far as to create Adam Maitland and Otho figures. Otho! There was an ironic appeal in an Otho action figure, sure, but it’s not like anyone noticed it until it was fifteen years too late.

For a brief time, my town was blessed with a Lionel Kiddie City. These toy stores were the stuff of legend for many, but we only had ours for two years, tops. The main merits of Kiddie City stores were their fabled clearance aisles, where toys that hadn’t been produced for up to fifteen years still found themselves marked and pegged, adorned with gigantic, package-ruining, luggage tag-themed red clearance stickers. It’s why so many still-carded vintage action figures are sold with big, gaping tears on the front all over eBay. Even more than a decade later, sellers still don’t want you to know that Tasha Yar’s TNG figure cost them seventy-eight cents a pop.

In the Beetlejuice toyline’s prime, I wasn’t interested. Marked down 75% at Kiddie City, I was all over it. From the figures to the weird motorcycles and convertibles that the figures rode on or in, I’ve seen virtually everything in the collection. Even stupid stuff, like the thing pictured in the 6.25″ photos above and below.

The Beetlejuice “Gross-Out Meter” was the pinnacle of the line’s ridiculousness, and for a collection that included everything from coffin-themed playsets to 18″ belching Beetlejuice dolls, that’s saying something. This was a high-concept toy, if we can assume that “high-concept” is defined as “something that takes more than 500 words to describe.” Let’s see if I can do it in 400.

The “Gross-Out Meter” provides you with the means to find out just how disgusting your friends really are. A spinning meter offers random readings like, “REALLY GROSS” or “TOTALLY FOUL.” To help sell these readings as truly personalized, the meter can be affixed to the wrist of your client, who at that point will have no solid rebuttal to being christened as totally foul.

And if that isn’t enough for you, a lever underneath the toy signals a plastic bug to jump several feet in the air from a bone-themed cage on the side of the meter. This doesn’t really connect with the spinning meter readings in any natural way, but hey, flying toy bugs.

If nothing else, you could at least say that the “Gross-Out Meter” wasn’t fashioned from the dusty mold of some preexisting, long forgotten Kenner toy. Truly, this was the first and last time we saw anything of the sort. I’d almost say it’s more of a work of art than a toy, for one easily finds themselves bored with the spinning level readings and flying bugs, opting to simply stand and admire the fact that a large toy company mass-produced skeleton hand-themed meters that told kids how gross they were. If you were in the mood to interpret or deconstruct, the “Gross-Out Meter” was the best thing in Aisle 7.

On the other hand, all of Kenner’s Beetlejuice toys broke the mold in some way. Most of the action figures (which seemed par for the course at first glance) had pop-off rubber heads which revealed tiny-sized plastic heads underneath, in tribute to the voodoo head-shrinking scene from the film’s climax. Other figures went down more traditional routes, i.e., a punky street thug who could be folded down into the shape of a giant rat.

Oh, and there was a Beetlejuice mask infested with three multicolored hair snakes that popped upwards under the power of a hidden hand-pump. For the kid who had everything.

The best part about buying a “Gross-Out Meter” was the included Kenner Action Toy Guide, with pages and pages of well-set color photos of all the boy-targeted playthings they had on the market in 1990. Every major toy company stuck booklets like this into the boxes of their larger offerings, and they kinda served as off-season Sears Wishbooks. They weren’t catalogs in the traditional sense — you couldn’t place orders from them — but the books still let us map out which plastic artifacts we were going to beg for next.

Moreover, these little catalogs were how non-readers like me got that same level of smug “AH AH I read a book” satisfaction other kids spent 150 pages of their life to achieve.

Beetlejuice: Thank you for being Halloweeny. You are… *checks* …totally offensive.

PS: I know you’re wondering what that flying toy bug looks like. Here. It looks like that. A small part of me believes that I got the same bug figure out of a can of Ecto-Plazm, but maybe I’m just kicking Kenner when they’re down. I only bitch about people who are dead and companies that are out of business. This keeps me safe.

I mean, in spite of all we’ve been through together.  I still have feelings for you x-entertainment.com, but if you pull that shit again, it is over between us.  You know what I’m talking about.  Don’t just sit there looking at me.  You know EXACTLY what I mean.

It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown is on!  We’re all watching it simultaneously!

I miss the old McDonalds and Dolly Madison commercials. I may have to dig out my tape from 1980 and watch it in the next couple of days.

My pumpkin patch is VERY sincere.

Vincent – Haw!  You can use it to tide you over until the blu-ray version of You’re Not Elected Charlie Brown comes out.

X-Entertainment.com – I am a very bad person.  I know this.  I have a nasty filthy mouth and I say dirty things on you, and I treat you like you’re my own personal love slave.  Which you’re not.  You’re a website and you’re free to see other readers.  I don’t know what it is about you, but you just make me wild with jealousy.  Then I see you parading around in your new Halloween theme and I just want to smack you so hard…

But I won’t.  I’m sorry, baby.  I just get upset sometimes.  Forgive me.

Snoopy should have gotten an Emmy for “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

I actually had that thing. Totally bizarre, but at least it was original. Somehow I managed to lose the big part, but the bug hung around my house for ages.

In case anyone cares, I saw this (2 year old) article today on npr.org, it has a photo and interview with the voice of Charlie Brown from 40 years ago. Possible childhood spoiler…

I can’t deal with Charlie Brown’s alternate universe “I approve this message” barb.

Ghosted by Matt @ 10/28/2008 8:34 PM EST

Yeah, leave Charlie Brown alone. Don’t make him approve messages. He just had a very bad night at tricks or treats!

Why didn’t anyone tell me there was an Otho figure!

Ghosted by GloriousKyle @ 10/28/2008 8:37 PM EST

I’m with you Matt. Especially the “Brown/Snoopy ‘08″ thing at the bottom. Charlie Brown doesn’t exist in 2008! He has his own timescale!

Also, the Macy’s commercials are making it really hard for me to continue shutting up the little voice that says turkey and glitter garlands are on the way. I’ve lasted this long, I can’t cave in with only three days till Halloween!

Only in Peanuts can a dog board op a radio call in show without anyone thinking anything of it.

And ABC’s seriously edited You’re Not Elected. They cut out a lot from the beginning as well as both times when Lucy slams the phone down in anger during the radio show.

What? Charlie Brown is endorsing someone? I have to wait until 8 pacific and I may skip it if they are f’ing with the classic. Is nothing is sacred?

Ghosted by Bill @ 10/28/2008 9:23 PM EST

Nah, he’s just endorsing himself. But it’s still irritatingly current for a cartoon that is supposed to make you all nostalgic.

And now I find it necessary to go to Wal-Mart and purchase the 20th anniversary-hologram-cover of Beetlejuice on DVD.

Ghosted by Brian @ 10/28/2008 9:31 PM EST

Here are the things I noticed for the first time while watching Great Pumpkin this evening:
1.  At the opening credits when all the kids are running from the spooks, when they are standing in a group, did you notice Charlie Brown was not shown?  It wasn’t until they were running did he happen to lean back and we find him hiding behind the manwitch (who we can guess is probably Shroeder since we never see who is behind the mask).
2.  After Linus jumps in Charlie Brown’s pile of leaves, both Charlie Brown and Snoopy give Linus an angry look.  Why would Snoopy be angry?  All he did was blow a leaf to the top of the pile while Charlie Brown did all the work.  Was it because Linus destroyed the perfect setting for the top leaf that Snoopy blew on to perfection?  I mean, a gust of wind was bound to come by and sooner or later, the leaf pile would’ve been blowing all over the place anyway.
3.  Did anyone notice a sarcastic look come across Lucy’s face after she handed Charlie Brown the signed document?  It’s as though we were being told without Charlie Brown’s knowing that there was no way Lucy was going to let him kick that ball.  Since we couldn’t her cross her fingers behind her, she instead gives us a weird look.
4.  Who was the one who said after the first house of receiving treats, “I got a quarter.”  A quarter?  You have a big bag being loaded with treats and all you can talk about is that quarter?  That’s worse than getting a bunch of pennies, and even though the total of pennies would probably be worth considerably less than the quarter, at least you get more of a quantity than that of the one quarter.  So, I’m guessing it was probably Violet who said it even though the voice sounded different.  The only other ghosts we knew about were Sally, but she ditched the group to sit with Linus in the pumpkin patch, Pig Pen but you can tell which character by the dirty, dusty sheet, Charlie Brown who’s costume we are all too familiar with, and that character “5″ that Matt has mentioned in his previous reviews of the “Great Pumpkin” Special.  I always thought “5″ was one of those background characters who never says anything because he sure doesn’t speak in the “You’re Not Elected” special.  However, he must have said  something because the ghost who told Linus in the pumpkin patch, “You missed Trick or Treat and now you’re going to miss the Halloween party” is clearly a boy’s voice.  Perhaps it’s the character in my next point of notice:
5.  The mysterious appearance of Frieda.  I didn’t notice her in the party scene, but Frieda (the girl with the naturally curly hair) doesn’t seem to be in the entire show except when all the kids reappear at the pumpkin patch without their costumes.  I think I am going to have to re-watch the episode before Halloween on DVD and try to see if I can catch Frieda.  Obviously she had to be part of the Halloween crew.  Perhaps we should have a survey to determine who the characters are under the costumes that do not reveal themselves.  I mean, we know Lucy’s a witch, Charlie Brown is the ghost with too many holes, Violet and Sally (before she stays in the pumpkin patch with Linus) and most likely “5″ are all regular ghosts, Snoopy is a WWI Flying Ace, and Pig Pen is a dirty ghost.  We know Patty can’t be the manwitch because that character asks Lucy if she was Patty so Patty must be the ghost with the coonskin hat and Shroeder must be the manwitch because since he never speaks in the episode, we can assume that’s Schroeder’s voice.

Whew, I already typed too much so I better wrap this up.  I saw the “You’re Not Elected Charlie Brown” episode last year and yes, it was edited.  I think they did that because if you may have noticed, the “Great Pumpkin” episode lasted longer than a half hour so they had to edit down the second episode to fit the one-hour time-slot.  I know I’ll have to re-watch that episode in it’s entireity so that might be an “Election Night Eve” viewing.

Anyway, does anybody who owns the Remastered DVD of Great Pumpkin consider it worth getting?  I have Great Pumpkin on DVD and VHS, I have the “It’s Magic” epsiode on VHS so the only part that’s left would be the documentary they were mentioning in the commercial.  Of course, if I did get it than I’d probably have to get the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter DVD specials and they have the exact same features that the original DVDs contain.

Anyway, that’s all from me right now.  I had Gameshow Network while typing this so I had a Family Feud episode hosted by Richard Karn and now an episode with the new host who’s name I have forgotten.  Well, time to read the rest of the posts and wait “patiently” for someone to respond to me!

Sorry for the double post but I must admit I liked the Macy’s commercial.  I think it was a little too early to broadcast it, but I’m sure we’ll see plenty of them come Thanksgiving during the Macy’s parade.  I guess we’re given a sneak peek in what to expect this holiday season.  Oh yeah, and that McDonalds commercial (to me at least) really sucked.  Where are the McBoo pails?  Playing soccer and showing off which is better, a trophy or Happy Meal boxes does NOT put me in a Halloweeny type of spirit.

Oh rats, now that I mentioned commercials, it triggered something else I wanted to ask.  Does anybody remember those commercials that used to advertise these devices known as the “Pumpkin Knife” “Pumpkin Scoop” and “Pumpkin Light?”  They were supposed to be objects that were made safe for children.  The only one I had was the pumpkin knife and that utensil SUCKED!  The edges weren’t sharp enough to make a really cool Jack O’ Lantern face.  For some reason, I always think of the pumpkin knife whenever Lucy stabs the pumpkin at the beginning of the Great Pumpkin special.  It’s like I’m subconsciously saying to her, “Use a safer object Luce!  You’re giving kids bad ideas on how to carve their pumpkins!”  Okay, I’m fine now.  I think the peanut butter cups I ate and the Dr. Pepper I drank during the “Great Pumpkin” hour are finally kicking in!

I missed the great pumpkin for something as trivial as WORK? Where the hell are my priorities?
Beetlejuice toys and Mega Force toys from Kiddie City for $.99;
Oh I know of what joys you speak.

Ghosted by Lucky Lighter @ 10/28/2008 9:48 PM EST

Good thing I have Great Pumpkin/You’re Not Elected on DVD. I can watch both unedited and actually on the respective holidays they’re supposed to be on.

I don’t remember the Beetlejuice toys at all. A bit surprising, considering how crazy my little sister was about the movie. I do, however, have extremely fond memories of that Lionel Kiddie City commercial. I can still sing that “Lionel Kiddie City turns that frown…” (Kangaroo jump on the “frown”) … upside down!” The closest one to me was in Philadelphia, but I used to see the commercial on the Philly stations all the time.

I was at work, so I missed “Great Pumpkin.” :( But I’ve caught it in years past, so I wasn’t that bummed.

And I had the Adam Maitland figure and the Beetlejuice one where his head came off to reveal the shrunken head.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 10/28/2008 10:04 PM EST

You can rest assured that the bug is not recycled at all. It’s completely unique to this toy,  making it extremely valuable among “companion figures” (yes, guys like Joe Eyeball and the various Ghostbusters mini-ghosts have their own category of collectible, and sometimes go for more money than the figures they came with!)

Thanks to this article I am now hunting down a figurine of Carey Mahoney. I had a huge crush on Steve Guttenberg in my circa 1995 youth. I thought I would one day marry Newton Crosby from Short Circuit.

Ahh another classic. Does my heart good to see good ol Charlie Brown on TV. Not sure how Halloweeny I’ll feel at the end, but I might be ready for Christmas soon. I hope. :(

Is it just me or does the “Totally” in the gross out meter look like the same background and font as the Teenwolf cartoon segues of the late 80’s?
Totally.

We had a Kiddie City for like 3 or 4 years near me.  I went one time christmas time 91.  They had Neo Geo and I was astounded that a system could cost almost 800 dollars, with 99 dollar games.

This is totally unrelated to the great pumpkin but I was flipping through the channels and noticed Spaceballs on G4 in a few minutes….but not the movie. It seems to be an animated show with Mel Brooks and a few others  from the movie doing the voices. I went to IMDB to find out more and people are giving it HORRIBLE reviews. That should be a clear sign not to watch it but i can’t help but be curious… anyone else up for giving it a try?  LOL

I remember having a lot of the Police Academy toys shown on that toy guide.  I think High Tower had a upward punching motion ala Blanka from Street Fighter II.  Or maybe he was supposed to be lifting something.  I can’t remember.  Regardless it was mostly punching in my play time.  I wonder if my dad tossed those things ever?

High Tower came with a little yellow motorbike that he could lift over his head, I guess to throw at criminals.

matt -

your understanding of “high concept” is a little backwards… it’s actually something that can be easily summed up in a few words, like “snakes on a plane,” for example.

something like beetlejuice is somewhat more low concept.

ok, that’s it!

Ghosted by Colin @ 10/29/2008 12:25 AM EST

My son’s kindergarten class went on a field trip to the pumpkin patch today. He brought home a pumpkin and now I am finally officially feeling the Halloween spirit. I carved myself a crazy jackolantern(based on my son’s specifications), baked the pumpkin seeds, remembered that I didn’t like pumpkin seeds and threw them all away, and then used the rest of the innards to bake some decent pumpkin bread. I felt like a wise native american chief, using every part of the pumpkin. (Except for the stem, which broke off. I have no use for it, but maybe I’ll throw it in a stew or something tomorrow, just for the sake of being thorough.) And I did it all while watching Peanuts on TV. And then I’m treated to a great new blog post. You’re the best, Matt. What a bizarre toy. Even the kid on the box seems confused by it. “I’m supposed to act excited about this?”

Sorry for the wall of text, gang.

I had every Beetlejuice toy. I had Adam Maitland, Otho, the streetpunk who turned into a rat, the teacher who turned into a bat, the grave playset, the talking doll, and even the Gross-Out Meter. I was Beetlejuice for Halloween in the first grade and I wore the mask with the pop-up snakes. I was a child obsessed. (Although if I could do it again I’d skip the Gross-Out Meter. That was fun for about eight minutes.)

Thanks Matt for rekindling some memories. Now if you could just post some scans of that Kenner catalog…
