Halloween Countdown ’08: Monkey Business.

We're going to a Halloween party tomorrow night. Actually, it's more of a family birthday party, but the charming host (Hi Sis!) decided that the party's proximity to Halloween meant that everyone had to come in costume.

I've known about this engagement for at least a month, but only today did it finally hit me that I needed a costume. I guess I was living under the assumption that I could get away with being the only asshole there without a costume, but after weighing the pros and cons, I decided that it was better to arrive in a gorilla mask than to have my balls broken all night long for being a spoilsport.

So, we went to one of our local Halloween stores. I've been there before, but never during prime time so close to the big day. What I assumed would be an inconvenience turned out to be just the shot in the arm my Halloween spirit needed. This place, filled with folks of all ages and from all walks, combing through obliterated racks of overpriced nylon as everything from strobe lights to remixed Rocky Horror songs assaulted their senses, was Halloween personified.

I don't know what it was, exactly, but I felt great in there. Maybe it was that my girlfriend took two hours to decide that they had nothing she wanted, and thus gave me ample time to soak in the nuances of a Halloween store like I never have before. I don't know. The store just felt so alive and rife with emotion. People are pretty passionate about their Halloween costumes, it seems.

For one thing, the place was loud. All kinds of sounds at war with one another, from spooky songs blaring over the speakers, to the constant chatter of audio-animatronic decorations, to people arguing over what would and wouldn't fit...if there was an exact midpoint between a swap meet held in a gymnasium and night at a swank uptown nightclub, this was it.

There were plenty of little kids, and of all the people shopping there, they were the most emotional. None of them seemed happy, but they probably were. It's kind of a fool's errand to shop for a Halloween costume so late in October. If you aren't the type of person who can "settle," you're going to be disappointed with your findings. Children may be as unique as snowflakes, but they all have one thing in common: They don't settle. Not without tears and tantrums. I saw many of those. If a small boy determined that the store was sold out of the costume he wanted, he blamed his parents, cursing them and shaming them and pretty much doing everything you can do to a person without getting the cops involved. It felt like I saw this scenario happen at least a dozen times tonight.

I loved it. Not just for the voyeuristic pleasure involved with watching strangers flip out, but because I totally remember what it was like to consider what you wore for Halloween as the single most important event in history. (Click here...I've been there.)

Then there was the older crowd, the high schoolers and college students, who always arrived in groups and generally stuck with two types of Halloween costumes: Slutty or offensive. Girls flocked to fishnets and skirts that looked like dog collars, and guys flocked to costumes in the shape of giant penises. Within this group was a smaller caste of gothy, freaky kids who weren't as much there to buy anything as they were to have simply a haven from whatever interpersonal conflicts awaited them at the nearby mall or coffee shop. At that age, I related much more to them. Part of me hoped that one of them would ask us to get beer for their crew.

Then there was the much older crowd -- the simple folks who either didn't have children or whose children were all grown up. These people were great. Totally jolly, totally carefree and totally welcoming the opportunity to be goofy. It was just so oddly uplifting to spot fifty-somethings sneaking around in Jigsaw masks, trying to scare their wives.

Mostly though, the experience was reminder that Halloween is alive and well, and that the times when I thought it wasn't were all my fault. I don't live in a bubble, but sometimes, I set up shop there. If you want something to seem as good as it used to, you've gotta actually do the things that made it so great to begin with.

So, I grabbed the gorilla mask, and the gorilla gloves. Tomorrow night, I'll wear them with pride. I'll even beat my chest like a real monkey -- or at least, I'll do this upon request.

I hope you all have plans, and I hope at least one of them involves dressing like a gorilla...or whatever else.

Matt, I’m so jealous, your Spirit store is so huge!  Ours is a tiny cramped little place that made me claustrophobic.  Didn’t help that it was like 150 degrees in there…
I was getting props for my costume, and ran into something that made me laugh really hard: the smoking cauldron you blogged about!  I am now the proud owner of a full cauldron that smokes, instead of just the fogging unit.  Even better, it was marked down to LESS than it would be to just buy the fogging unit itself!!!

Holy Hell! I can not wait until this movie comes out. Not until April though. :|

Congrats on the costume choosing, Matt! I had plans for a superhero costume themed party last night, but my girlfriend was sick and I had to nurse her back to health (aka watch The Incredible Hulk and eat indian food). I guess I’ll gave to be Quail-Man next year.

Wow, Sunday Night Football must not be taking any chances going up against the World Series.  Instead of a game tonight, NBC is showing “The 40-Year Old Virgin” instead.  That’s the movie I swear they can name after me if it didn’t come out fourteen years too early!

Not sure how many people are interested, but the Toys R Us Big Toy book came out today.  Is it wrong that I’m 27 and still love to flip through the thing?

I just got a swanky pirate costume for Halloween. I ordered online, but I was still running around Halloween places today on account of trying to get the bf a cloak. Party City was packed as hell and it was kinda awesome but the bf doesn’t tolerate crowds well and he’s been having anxiety attacks like a mofo lately so we didn’t stay long.

But for real, I’m gonna be a sexy ass pirate.

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 10/26/2008 9:36 PM

Mystie, is that “sexy-ass pirate” or “sexy ass-pirate”

‘Cause there’s a difference…  :)

Let’s go with both.

Bill- Perchance do you know when THIS movie comes out? It’s not this October. I really want to see this movie. I normally dislike the horror genre, but this one is TOO awesome. For those of you who only understand LOLspeak- DO WANT.

I just wanted to tell you guys that if you want to add some more to your Halloween Spirit go to Rosie.com.  Yes I know, but look at the top of the page where it says Say what? And click on it.  She asked people to share their Halloween memories.  I just read them, some are nice.

Also I looked up It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown it’s going to be on Tuesday at 8.  So I am going to make sure to watch it live on tv like it should be.  Maybe I will watch Garfield’s Halloween Adventure on youtube again.

I am going to watch the Poltergeist tonight and I have it set up to dvr the other two.  I am DVRing Halloween episodes of Roseanne and home improvement.  Also another sitcom I don’t remember which one step by step or something like that LOL so that’s fun.  What has really gotten me into the Halloween spirit are watching Halloween specials on youtube.  I should watch some more tonight and this week.

I want to do a video game review of typing of the dead this week.  There is a guy that does great video game reviews his name is nightwing I am going to do the review in his style.  He takes it seriously which is nice.   I have never done one before so it will be a learning experience to say the least.

I bought a couple nights ago two cheap small frozen pizzas and there was some frozen asparagus on sale so I bought that.  Odd combo but it was good for an easy quick meal tonight.  We do a quick grocery trip on friday morning usually to last until monday or tuesday because that is when he has off but we didn’t do that this week so I barely scrapped together lunches this last couple of days.

When I went to walmart I didn’t get as many things with the money I had and I should of.  I feel like mcgyver but with food when I do that!  But he stopped at the store today just to get a couple candy bars and a soda so he’ll be ok.  I made him two pb and j sandwiches, two sandwiches with frozen chicken patties that I cooked in the microwave a little bit, and he had some sliced up apple leftover.  Oh well I ate hours ago and I am still not hungry so he must feel the same way.  We decided to have our own little Halloween on either Monday or Tuesday night and then I will have my own Halloween on Friday night.  I am more into it then he is but he wants to go along with it to make me happy.  And he gets to eat candy lol so that’s always a good thing.

I just can’t decide to save my one and only package of cocoa bats until Friday or eat half on mon half on fri or all on mon I dunno I am going to get some pumpkin peeps so maybe I can eat pumpkin peeps on mon and then on fri eat the package of the cocoa ones that are SO good.  I love the flavored ones they have now.  Like the strawberry hearts and the cookie gingerbread ones.  I think as a kid I would of looked forward more to being an adult if I knew they were going to make peeps for not just easter but other Holidays too.  I think I am going to make brownies from scratch tonight if I have all of the ingredients.  I think I do.  The recipe I found for the last (and only) time I made them is so good.  Really and truely the best brownies ever.  But we don’t have any milk to wash them down with :(

Not at all. i’m 21 and still love it. It seems to have changed a bit, besides the different toys. Perhaps its the paper. It’s no longer bound, so it looks thinner, but this one had 80 pages! By the way, does anyone else actually smell the Big Toy Book & the Sears Wish Book way back when? They just have this awesome smell to it. Like Glossy Newspaper that just reminds me of Christmas.

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 10/26/2008 11:36 PM

Oh yeah, I love that smell.  Somewhere between new sneakers and an art supplies store.  The kids in my family treat the TRU catalogs like we did the Sears Wish Books, going through them page by page and circling their desired items.  (Their parents usually translate this into Amazon Wish List form afterwards, which sucks for TRU, but whatever.)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/27/2008 12:02 AM

One thing the Big Toy Book of today has that ours didn’t: Checkboxes. You get to check off what you want. Damn, the future has arrived.

And New Show Smell is awesome. Cannot believe that someone else is out there that loves this.

So…I found a site today that was letting people watch W. without paying for it…pretty cool.  It’s an ok movie…I liked Richard Dreyfus’ Dick Cheney portrayal…but the guy who was Bush senior…no clue why Oliver Stone picked him. He looked NOTHING like him!  Laura Bush’s actress was decent, and Josh Brolin as W. was a nice choice.

Goob I am so like that too with food! I can take like random left overs and make stuff that Rachel Ray would drool over.  I made a casserole the other night from left over broccoli chedddar soup, seasoned chicken thighs and brown rice.  It was great!  Left overs are better with soup, because the flavor settles in and goes throughout the entire casserole. Like how certain things taste better the next day after you make it some times.

I had a pretty normal day — baby shower for some ladies in the office, dinner, and getting fall clothes out. It’s supposed to snow this week, maybe. Which is weird, cause it was about 70 today.

Watching “In the Mouth of Madness” on Sci-Fi now. I know the monster thing later on in the movie is a little lame, but I always found the premise and everything pretty scary. And Sam Neill is good in it.

Chestnuts roasted by Reni @ 10/27/2008 1:05 AM

Mandy_Reeves I have always wanted to be one of those people with dinner, I am ok at it with his lunches but dinner I am not good at making my own dinner without a recipe.  I have heard of people that take this and that and the other and make a great dinner.  A few weeks ago we made a lasagna out of leftovers and it was good I want to do that on a regular basis.  I didn’t have anything fancy just canned spegetti sauce, noodles, and cottage cheese.  W/ vegetables like we had a zuchini in it and a sweet potato.  We have two big cans of cream of chicken that I don’t know what to do with yet.

I make sometimes what I call chicken casserole which is a family sized can or two regular cans of cream of mushroom soup mixed with a little bit of mayo (about 1/4 cup) and a splash of milk.  I cook sliced up skinless boneless chicken breasts and corn (other frozen veggies are ok I just prefer corn) and then I put in a casserole dish the corn first, then the chicken then the mixture then cheese.  I put it in the oven and take it out when the rice is cooked.  I serve it over rice of course.

BTW have you guys seen the hoodies that zip up the front and are supposed to be an easy costume idea for boys at walmart?  I am so jealous because those things are cool.  One is a skeleton and one is a robot I think.  The design is very vintage looking.  There are eye holes but the front zips up the top completely.

I coach middle school football and I’ve had two players over the last two years have those.  They’re so awesome, it actually made me jealous the first time I saw them.

Chestnuts roasted by Whitebacon @ 10/27/2008 5:26 AM

Bill- I can’t wait for that either. Connecticut has so many haunted spots. Do you know, is this based on the whole Discovery Channel series? I can’t find much info. about it yet.
And PlantMonster- Not to jump in on the conversation, but I’ve been following that movie for a bit. It was supposed to come out this time of year in 2007, but got pushed back to 2008, and then for some reason, pushed even further back to 2009. Warner Bros. is holding it back for unknown reasons, even though the trailer was on the “300″ DVD. As it stands, there is no hard release date for that movie.

Me and my wife went and saw Dracula at the local performing arts theater here in town last night, I won’t say where just somewhere in the mighty mo’. To tell the truth it was much more fun than going to the movies. Several actors poped in and out of the crowd scaring some of the crowd. The lead playing Dracula was a little hammy, but the man playing Renfield really stole the show. I too was getting a little bored with halloween, what with aisles and aisles of christmas every where. Do I need to celebrate christmas two months in advance? The other thing that bums me out is, I stay at home while my wife and kid go begging and I stay behind and hand out the candy. I love watching the little tykes get scared at the sight of a half dead man peering from his coffin. It is the older kids that need to find something else to do. I am sorry but unless you are in middle school or under you don’t need to trick or treat. If you are a teenager and have a job you don’t need to trick or treat leave it to the kids. Just my little rant. Any way that play has given me my mojo back sort a speak. Till later happy nightmares!

I just got done watching the infamous Halloween 3: Season of the Witch on HBO Zone. It is kinda cheesy with a weird story, but is nowhere near the disaster it’s made out to be. I’ve seen worse horror films.
