Halloween Countdown ’08: SweeTarts Spooky Squeez!

I've seriously miscalculated the time it will take to do what I need to do before going to sleep tonight, so this entry will be short. I've long considered myself the kind of person who cannot do good work unless I'm fending off a deadline, but I'm starting to think that that's all bullshit. I'm a horrible procrastinator, and I'm about to pay for it.

Thank you Mr. Wonka! It's rare to find any decent new Halloween stuff so late in the season, and I was certain that I'd have to survive on the fumes from junk I bought four weeks ago but deemed unworthy of reviewing. Not so! At least not until later in the week!

This SweeTarts Squeez tube is a holiday spinoff not unlike that wintery-themed version I reviewed last December. What's most admirable about Wonka's foray into the haunted forest is the flavor's title: "Cherry Gooey Blood." Blood! Candy makers lost their zeal for being edgy and hardcore long ago, and it's become unusual to find candy that connects with blood in a stated, literal way.

Sure, there are plenty of sweets with gooey red centers that are very clearly intended to mimic blood, but few companies are willing to say it outright. Wonka, you hero. I now completely forgive you for that gratuitous scene of Grandpa Joe dancing in response to getting an invite to the Chocolate Factory during Burton's vision of your weird little story. Okay maybe not completely.

The imagination of children is vastly superior to the imagination of me or you. They're able to merge fact and fiction seamlessly, and thus, I sincerely envy the many seven-year-olds who eat this sugary crap and convince themselves that blood really is an ingredient. I can't tell you how much my crotchety mood would improve if I could fool myself into believing that some man or animal died to feed me SweeTarts.

The collective palate of those same seven-year-olds, unsoiled by years of tobacco and liquor and irresistible urges to do the 9-Volt Battery Tongue Trick, is probably best suited to a candy like this, but even my old tongue thinks "Cherry Gooey Blood" is mad serviceable. It's as close as you'll get to tasting a cherry Slurpee without actually tasting a cherry Slurpee. It's the astronaut food version of a cherry Slurpee.

Sharing a consistency with sandy toothpaste and packing enough of a sour bite to make my brow furl, the SweeTarts Squeez "Cherry Gooey Blood" tube is a welcome addition to the parade of goofy crap I've eaten this Halloween season. I won't give it an A+, but it's somewhere close. Let's say B+.

Assuming that X-E's current devotion to an all-spooky motif has attracted some readers from the various covens dotting the outskirts of Verizon FiOS's range, I'd like to ask any witches who might be reading a favor: Do the spell that makes tonight last for 75 hours. Please. I promise to kill a chicken in your name tomorrow.

My best friend Harry thinks it was probably something lame like him not paying child support.  They acted like they were just pissed because that guy just made their work a lot harder.  They didn’t act freaked like he was doing something illegal with his job.  The next time we go there I’ll ask an older employee.  I hope they don’t give me the it’s none of your business routine.  Maybe he just had a lot of speeding tickets he didn’t pay up, or he was running from the government because of tax fraud?  I don’t know.  I think that would show up in the news.  I just went to google and nothing.  I’m going to check tomorrow.

I just finished reading the Super-Naturals article.  I remember having one of those toys. For a couple of years holograms were everywhere. I had a bunch of stuff with holograms on them. Various toys or stickers. I remember even boxes of cereal had crappy holograms right on the boxes or included as a cheapo toy, maybe as a ring. Cereals like Fruity Pebbles, Fruit Loops & Lucky Charms . I remember a hologram toy that was tied in to the Jim Henson Film “The Dark Crystal”. Girls at school had hologram necklaces with like hologram skull, eagle….etc… I had a TRAPPER KEEPER with holograms all over it. The folders inside had holograms.  After the holograms fadded away a couple of years went by and those stupid 3D art  stereogram picutres got popular. The ones where u had to stare at them and relax your eyes and most of the time you couldn’t see it, or your friend could see it.  Heck, Seinfeld even had an episode where Elane bought one and her boss was trying to see it.  Those things annoy me!  In fact I’m done!

My College Homecoming bonfire is on Halloween night, so I doubt I’ll be doing anything “Halloweenie”

That weekend is going to suck….Lots of people staying at my house (which I enjoy, but it’s a lot of work!), followed by lots of stuff going on for homecoming, and then Nov. 2nd is “Fall Back”  Blah…

I remember one weekend in middle school trying the candy paste and the liquid candy. I think my teeth and stomach hurt for a week after that. Too much citric acid and high fructose corn syrup for me.

Sandy toothpaste…nice analogy. I use Crest Pro Health, and “sandy” suits that stuff to a tee.

And in other Halloweeny news, here’s the appetizer for this year’s Homestarloween toon!

Joe t’Plumb – It’s a sailboat!

I loved autostereograms; though the images were always too blocky to be anything too good. But we did have one which was a 3d skull – which was pretty halloweenie. I’m sure in ten years, kids will watch Mallrats and not know what is going on with Earl’s brother staring at some picture.

I remember the tube Bubblegum. I had a Slimer one once. I don’t think I’ve ever had the candy in a tube.

Matt – You wrote in one of your Kool-Aid articles that there were some flavors of Kool-Aid that were better hot. Well, I just made some hot Scary Blackberry Ghoul-Aid and I believe it may be one of them. I nuked a mug of mine for about 2 minutes and DAMN that shit is good. I think I prefer it hot. If you still have any give it a try and let me know what you think. If not, give me an address and I’ll hook you up with some.

When it comes to gooey candy in a tube, my favorite has always been the original Cherry SqueezePop.  They are impossible to find now.  All the versions I see now are of the sour variety.  What I wouldn’t do for that cheery goo….

Speaking of wacy candy (though this one isn’t Halloween related), check out the Choco-Fudge Mallow Sundae:

It looks beautiful and yet inedible. Like Play-Doh. And it’s only 60¢, although I don’t know where to find it. Possibly at drug stores.

Man, I love love love tube candy.

I adored the old Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and have never watched the Johnny Depp version for fear of being too pissed off at it….

There was a candy very similar to this in the early 90′s. Liquid Lolli-pop. Basically a tube full of HFCS and flavor. I remember buying them at Riverside Park in Agawam Ma along with those gimungus pixie sticks at the candy store near the thunderbolt.

Today at CVS, I saw the Franken Berry AND Boo Berry Fruit strips. Also some cool Charlie Brown Halloween figures. One with Charlie and his ghost costume, one with Snoopy in the fighter helmet sitting on the doghouse, one with Lucy and some nebulous costume, and the last was Peppermint patty with the Green Witch Mask, from the TV special. As I was driving home, the little BB’s in my head began to rattle. Wasn’t the Green Witch Mask the thing Lucy wore? Am I right? Wrong? Anyone?

Chestnuts roasted by Alexander @ 10/21/2008 5:58 PM

Alexander-  Your right, Lucy was the one with the Green Witch mask….what’s next Linus with Pigpens dirty ghost sheet!!???

OOoooh, pretty spooky blood candy.
Thanks for the heads up star scream… wait it’s allready 10:30! If only tonight were 75 hours long, than I could stay up watching monster movies and playing Castlevania. That’ll make me praise pumpkins and vampires even more this season.

Sorry, I can only resurrect Mega Ultra Chicken.  Shh, it’s legendary!

Also, I found the Boo Berry Froot By The Foot at my CVS as well! It’s awesome.

Anybody have any idea why Music Choice isn’t working? When I try to listen to Sounds of the Season, I get a “buffering…” message for a long time, then an error message. It’s been like that for a week now. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Chestnuts roasted by TB Tabby @ 10/21/2008 10:57 PM

Matt:  I’ve just got to say, I don’t mind the Halloween Countdown getting stretched a bit here towards the end.  Simply because you do so much to make this site awesome, and I’m sure I speak for a lot of people here when I say how much we appreciate all you do to keep us entertained.

I started reading X-E a little over a year ago, and you really got me through a rough spot last year when I was stuck in the house battling pneumonia and respiratory infections for pretty much the whole holiday season.  If it weren’t for discovering the Advent Calendar, I would have gone insane.  All of them are fantastic, but last year’s was genius.  When I couldn’t sleep, I’d sit down at my computer and catch up on all the previous ACs just so I’d be able to know what was going on, and when I finally did get caught up, you helped keep me going through the rest of December.  I’ve been here (sometimes just lurking) ever since.

So Matt, you’ll never hear me complain.  This is my absolute favorite website that I frequent, and even when you are too busy to post, I get a lot of laughs out of reading and participating in the threads.  So I don’t care if you write a huge expose on why Cobra Commander’s veil days were better than his silver mask days, or if you just write a few short paragraphs about a weird balloon you found in a grocery store, it’s all gold to me.

And I’m glad you’ve gotten free for December.  I’ve been jonesing for an Advent-ure since January, and I can’t wait to see what you’ve got cooking for this year.

Matt could always spend the rest of the remaining days drawing Ghost With The Most comics :)

Home from a loooong day at work (in terms of how it felt, not actually how long it was). How’s everyone this fine tomorrow?

I know they’re a bit old at this point, but I’ve been catching up on “Masters of Horor” series at Netflix since most of them are “instant” views now, and I have to say that, while I’m not really scared, I’m enjoying them. I highly recommend if you want to kill and hour or so.
