Halloween Countdown ’08: SweeTarts Spooky Squeez!

I've seriously miscalculated the time it will take to do what I need to do before going to sleep tonight, so this entry will be short. I've long considered myself the kind of person who cannot do good work unless I'm fending off a deadline, but I'm starting to think that that's all bullshit. I'm a horrible procrastinator, and I'm about to pay for it.

Thank you Mr. Wonka! It's rare to find any decent new Halloween stuff so late in the season, and I was certain that I'd have to survive on the fumes from junk I bought four weeks ago but deemed unworthy of reviewing. Not so! At least not until later in the week!

This SweeTarts Squeez tube is a holiday spinoff not unlike that wintery-themed version I reviewed last December. What's most admirable about Wonka's foray into the haunted forest is the flavor's title: "Cherry Gooey Blood." Blood! Candy makers lost their zeal for being edgy and hardcore long ago, and it's become unusual to find candy that connects with blood in a stated, literal way.

Sure, there are plenty of sweets with gooey red centers that are very clearly intended to mimic blood, but few companies are willing to say it outright. Wonka, you hero. I now completely forgive you for that gratuitous scene of Grandpa Joe dancing in response to getting an invite to the Chocolate Factory during Burton's vision of your weird little story. Okay maybe not completely.

The imagination of children is vastly superior to the imagination of me or you. They're able to merge fact and fiction seamlessly, and thus, I sincerely envy the many seven-year-olds who eat this sugary crap and convince themselves that blood really is an ingredient. I can't tell you how much my crotchety mood would improve if I could fool myself into believing that some man or animal died to feed me SweeTarts.

The collective palate of those same seven-year-olds, unsoiled by years of tobacco and liquor and irresistible urges to do the 9-Volt Battery Tongue Trick, is probably best suited to a candy like this, but even my old tongue thinks "Cherry Gooey Blood" is mad serviceable. It's as close as you'll get to tasting a cherry Slurpee without actually tasting a cherry Slurpee. It's the astronaut food version of a cherry Slurpee.

Sharing a consistency with sandy toothpaste and packing enough of a sour bite to make my brow furl, the SweeTarts Squeez "Cherry Gooey Blood" tube is a welcome addition to the parade of goofy crap I've eaten this Halloween season. I won't give it an A+, but it's somewhere close. Let's say B+.

Assuming that X-E's current devotion to an all-spooky motif has attracted some readers from the various covens dotting the outskirts of Verizon FiOS's range, I'd like to ask any witches who might be reading a favor: Do the spell that makes tonight last for 75 hours. Please. I promise to kill a chicken in your name tomorrow.

When I think of  “sugary, wet gum”, all I can think of is Nickelodeon’s Green Slime gum. Does anybody remember that? It came out sometime in the late 90s. Pretty disgusting.

Either that or the Ghostbusters Slimer gum. Which I think has been featured on here before.

Looks delicious…….I think I’ve found a replacement for my toothpaste.

There was a Simpson’s gum like that, too, probably in summer of ’90 or ’91.  They were never really popular, from what I could see, so it’s easy to understand that there were several types, but not all at once, and definitely not for long.

I was addicted to this stuff as a kid. Probably why I think Gushers are the best fruit snacks around. I spotted something at Target that was like candy goo in a jar that had gummy bodyparts in it, but I didn’t buy it and now I can’t find it. Although they did have boxes of candy zits.

Forget witches covens. You should just flat-out call Papa Shango.

Don’t worry Matt. I’m a horrible procrastinator too.

Even with things that I really want to do.

It’s why I only update one of my fanfiction stories about every 6 months or so. And, I why I haven’t finished one of my flash cartoons or Gamemaker games yet.

Anyway, that SweeTarts goo looks good.

Congrats Leigha!!

Bill
“Children shouldn’t play with dead things” was horrible!!! I tried to watch it last year for my annual Zombie movie marathon and ended up fast forwarding thru most of it!!

The only thing I remember at the Burton’s version is the conversation between Violet and Veruca.

“Let’s be friends!”
“Best friends!”

I found those lines of dialogue to be so random and superfluous that I could not stop laughing.

As a child, the original Willy Wonka movie scared the shit out of me. I haven’t watched it since I was about nine years old….

I’m watching Hocus Pocus right now though. Got the DVD for $10 at Target. Yeee. :3

Burton’s daddy issues have overcome his usual gothic styling; Wonka was just an hour and a half long version of Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy” poem. “he loves his father, HE HATES HIM”. It’s like Smeagol/Gollum got a film camera.

My husband has put the freeze on any new candy purchases, so… boo. No candy in a tube for me. I did get treated to the wonderful bizarre vision of a Grim Reaper standing next to Frosty the Snowman at my local Target today! We also got some of those mini-Halloweeny Jones sodas, but haven’t tried them yet.

Congrats on the Wii, Leigha.

And count me among likers of both “Wonka” versions. The Burton one has grown on me, although I definitely find it more inherently hilarious than the original, which I just find sweet.

gingela..it was called Bubble Jug possibly?  It sold in a little plastic carton that looked like a mini plastic jug of juice and it was pink.

Heh, I think I remember eating this stuff as a kid.  If not, it was something very, very similar.

Matt, just review an 80′s horror movie or something if you’re running out of decoration/candy themed blog ideas. I’d hate to see the countdown fall apart like last year’s. It’s too fun of a Halloween season this year to start complaining about a lack of purchased Halloween candy 2 weeks before the Holiday itself.

Chestnuts roasted by Chris @ 10/21/2008 1:19 AM

But the Halloween Countdown falling apart is tradition.

I seriously can’t believe October is almost over — it’s only 10 days til Halloween after all! Halloween always marks the point where procrastinating about Christmas shopping starts to really make me feel stressy.

Chestnuts roasted by Reni @ 10/21/2008 1:50 AM

Tell me about it.  Time really flew this year.  Fortunately I believe I’ve orchestrated a good work schedule for the next few months — a fuckton in November and absolutely nothing in December.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 10/21/2008 1:55 AM

My major problem is I’ll be working on Halloween. But, I’m planning to dress up as an escaped mental patient with a tin-foil hat and pass out candy.

In order to get out of work on time I’m really going to have to push myself!

Chestnuts roasted by Tetsu Deinonychus @ 10/21/2008 2:08 AM

Lucky! Enjoy that December — I get hit with a ton of holiday-ish “special projects” in December. Not that they’re unpleasant; they just get lumped into an already tight schedule.

At least I remembered to save up vacation time this year so I’ve got a good setup of three- and four-day vacations from here out :D

Chestnuts roasted by Reni @ 10/21/2008 2:09 AM

Dang! I work on Halloween, and I don’t get off til ten at night. This will be my first ever Halloween that I probably won;t enjoy. I mean, we haven’t started decorating yet. Nothing feels Halloweenish around here. Probably because only one house on my entire street has actually put up one decoration. Also, I couldn’t do some kind of Halloween Extrrrrrravaganza on my blog thanks to Hurricane Ike………and Comcast………….and my laptop charger.

I had one of those tubes right when they came out.  They are good, but I felt a bit ripped off because it seems like you don’t get much out of them.  Compared to the 3 for .99 candy bars you can get at various stores and other things like that the volume doesn’t seem like much.

Also they remind me of a product I got to try once because my cousin went to a birthday party and got two of them and she didn’t want to eat two so she gave me one.  This is going to sound gross but you know liquid deodorant with the slots on the top that the ooze squirts out of?  Well it looked exactly like that.  But you turned the knob on the bottom and liquid candy oozed out.

It was a bit sour but mostly it felt like you were eating so much sugar you were going to bounce off the walls after eating the entire thing in one sitting which I did with mine.  I got grape and she got sour apple.  I have never seen them since, this was in 2000 or around there.  If I saw them at the store I would get one or two of them.

The most wild thing happened earlier.  We went to go out to burger king, my best friend Harry was craving an angus burger, and I have some coupons that I actually ripped one out of my coupon book and we headed there.  We saw about 5 cop cars outside of Burger King and we thought some punk kid that went into Burger King as a customer did something and it was a big deal.  We walked in and a girl no older then 17 or so told me that the manager got arrested and they can’t take orders without a manager!  They called the other 5 managers and got voicemail!

We waited around for about 10 minutes and then decided that taco bell sounded better then burger king.  I put my coupon back in the coupon book and we went into taco bell.  We didn’t find out what he got arrested for, I wasn’t brave enough to ask.  And I don’t think it’s any of my business.  Surprisingly enough I am not curious.

Tonight we are going to go to his work for a couple hours to have a pizza party of sorts.  I am pretty much forced to go but hey I get a pizza out of the deal.  Harry is going to pay 10 dollars and is going to stop by Domino’s and get 4 pizzas and some cheesy breadsticks there and soda.  I don’t know if you guys know this but if you like Domino’s pizza you can get a buy one get one free unlimited toppings at Domino’s on Tuesdays.   If we get a hot pizza someplace it’s Domino’s on Tuesdays most of the time.  It’s pretty cool when you spend about 21 dollars for two large pizzas that is a combination style pizza.  We usually get combo with pinapple there.

I wish I was getting cake out of the deal dammit.  They have store bought sheet cakes at his work sometimes.  The people that work the day shift get first dibs and then he gets some of someone thinks of him enough to put some in a stryofoam container for him.  They are nice at his work though.  Even though some people that go there as temp workers steal every morsel of food out of the fridge!  He has a cooler with a blue ice pack in it that he brings just so he doesn’t have to put food in the fridge.  I hate people like that, they are the scum of this society.  I understand in some households money is tight but still.

I’ve been too busy to even appreciate Halloween this year :(

Well, at least I got to play a ton of Silent Hill…

I was just wandering around youtube (about 100 more videos to watch until I have my counter up to 18 thousand!) and I watched a video someone made that commented earlier on my channel.

Anyone that has kids knows of a show called Lazytown.  The host is an adorable girl wears a bright pink wig and they sing a lot with puppets.  Well there is a Halloween type of song on a video that is the link below that I really actually quickly warmed up to.  It would be great for the countdown next year IMO.  I hate to say it but it’s, catchy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHXRqs2FzdE

I have software that can make an mp3 from audio from any youtube or any video site like youtube so Matt if you want I can send you an mp3 of this song.  The software is from a site called Vixy.net just for anyone that is curious.

Chestnuts roasted by Goob @ 10/21/2008 5:01 AM

Yay Goob, you managed to answer a question I had without even knowing. It seems that the puppets are localised to where the show is — in the UK, they all have really obnoxious British accents. I can’t believe Stephanie is 17 already though!

The only thing is now I’m curious about the arrested Burger King manager. What did he do? Someone should get Monk on the case. Or Ted Levine, obviously.
