Halloween Countdown ’08: Super Naturals!

I've written about Super Naturals before, but never with one of the actual toys on hand to verify that what I'm writing wasn't based on artificially sweetened memories. This time is different, and I was right. Super Naturals is one of the best action figure lines of all time.

Made by Tonka in 1987, everything about Super Naturals was unique. Well, except for the primary gimmick of holographic images indicating each figure's totem animal power, which it shared with Hasbro's Visionaries collection. (Not sure who ripped off who, but for the sake of what I'm covering, let's say that Visionaries was the copycat line.) But everything else was unique. Maybe I should rethink this paragraph.

Due to its lack of a corresponding animated series, a recap of the storyline is in order. The Super Naturals were groups of heroic and evil warriors who escaped their foreboding spirit world to war against each other on Earth. (Conveniently, the spirits escaped from the eerie "Tomb of Doom," which doubled as the line's only playset.)

You know how most action figure lines include more than a few "loser figures" that you wouldn't dream of buying unless you'd already collected everyone else? That wasn't the case here -- all of the figures felt like stars.

Still, even the lousiest Super Naturals figure was worth the money, all due to those righteous holograms. Each figure's torso was saturated with a holographic lenticularistic wonder that alternated images between the character's natural state (like, a king or a pirate) and the character's secret power state, represented by everything from snakes to lions to creatures made entirely of lightning. The holograms were extremely effective in making Super Naturals feel like they should've cost far more than whatever their original MSRP was.

I said that all Super Naturals figures felt like stars, but this guy was my favorite by far. Not just from this collection, but out of the hundreds of action figures I've owned throughout my sad and meager existence. "Burnheart" is his name, and despite his positively leaderesque look, he somehow played second fiddle in the pecking order to another one of the villain characters. I call bullshit.

During my youth, all toy-related adventures were staged from within a series of action figure playsets that were set side by side, connected by cardboard bridges and any other available materials. (It was the only way to identify Castle Greyskull and the Ewok Village as a singular entity.) A group of villain figures from various lines shared control of this ultimate fortress, including the six characters shown above: Jabba the Hutt, Mumm-Ra, Cravex, Megatron, Louie the Plumber (he looked more impressive after you ripped his hat off) and Emperor Palpatine. Burnheart was part of this elite and exclusive club, which ran my toy universe without issue for years and years.

There were power struggles, of course. I recall one storyline where Jabba and Mumm-Ra had a tiff and tried to separate the Superstar Seven into factions. Jabba enlisted Palpatine (they felt they shared a bond) and Cravex, while Mumm-Ra allied with Louie and Megatron. Burnheart would've been the deciding vote, but he refused to take sides, ultimately coaxing everyone to work together again. He was that special to me. He got to be the problem solver.

The holograms were amazing. They worked really well, and they seemed somehow "adult" with their realistic visages that felt like they were pulled from a bunch of creepy old horror movies. Burnheart's hologram switches from a zombie knight to a hideous fire monster. Since most of the other Super Naturals characters morphed into eagles and simple shit like that, I always put my money on the guy who turned into fire-with-eyes.

Beyond the six original figures shown above, there were also Super Naturals Ghostlings, which shared the hologram gimmick but lacked legs. (Seriously, they were the top halves of action figures...no legs.) All of the figures came with some kind of glow-in-the-dark weapon, but larger ones like Burnheart also included a holographic shield.

Truly one of the most unsung collections of my childhood, there's never been better proof that toys need corresponding TV shows and movies to have a chance at success. Super Naturals were not popular toys. They don't even have a Wiki article. Even those of you who are the same age as me might not remember them, and this makes me sad.

Super Naturals' connection to Halloween may be tenuous, but I dunno. They're spooky, they're kinda scary, and they came packaged with a little sweepstakes form that allowed kids to enter for the chance to win a "Halloween Vacation" to Los Angeles. I do not feel that I'm stretching things. Tomorrow, when I write about my disdain for orange Tic-Tacs and call it Halloweeny due to the color connection, then I'll be stretching things. But not tonight. Tonight I have done my duty.

I never mixed worlds like that.   Cobra could never invade Ewok Village and the Transformers couldn’t terrorize Lego Land.  They had their own boxes and 5-gallon ice cream buckets.

Great article Matt. I love the way you can remember specific encounters you had with your Army Men from way back in the day. Hell… I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning, let alone stuff from that long ago.

YES this line did have two “vehicles” that were animals.
One was a lion with metal looking wings.
The other was a black and purple dragon.
They were two of the most awesome toys I ever owned, and wish I had them today.  I didnt’ even know what they were from until I asked here on this forum a few months ago and some kind soul supplied me with the information.  So just seeing the action figures get mentioned makes me excited.
I SO wish I had those toys now, they were SO awesome!  I remember taking the lion and dragon to those “school holiday” events they would have in grade school where the teachers would let you bring a few toys from home (like a special treat before Christmas break or something) and everyone would be drooling and nearly worshipping my lion and dragon because no one else had seen anything like them.  (an aunt out of state bought them both for me for Christmas, probably on clearance or something but WOW were they ever “TEH AWESOME!!!!”

Much luv to Supernaturals.  Whether they are truly Halloweeny or not.  They are creepy enough to be tho.

I know we usually don’t talk about this stuff but I wanted to bring it up.

I have a friend that is going through the FTM hormone therapy to get the surgery and everything.  They have taken 4 t shots (testosterone shots) in this last month.  So once a week.  One of the side effects they said they have noticed is their skin is slightly thicker then before.

I understand that, but wouldn’t that be the weirdest sensation to go through?  I mean THE WEIRDEST sensation.  I have been thinking about it off and on all night.  Thicker skin.  Wow.

Ok carry on :D

i have two ghostlings, the skull dude, the lionheart guy and the tomb of doom somewhere at my parents’ house.  tomb of doom was simple but came with a big ass coffin you could use universally with any other action figure series, and of course once you dump a body in, you flip the switch and they disappear and all that’s left is a giant hologram (i think of a spinning vortex to the afterlife or something).

I never even knew stuff like this existed! I would’ve been all over some of these deals — I can empathize with starwenn, I can totally see these SuperNaturals overrunning the My Little Pony castle! :D

The holograms only came out in a camera flash? I guess images can die too… you caught the ghost of an image, Matt! Very creepy! ^_^

Holograms and glow-in-the-dark weapons don’t seem to go together. I’m sure they don’t glow enough to make the holograms visible in darkness. That’s just one too many gimmicks.

I think I had Burnheart, Skull and one of the ghostlings when I was a kid. I remember getting them cheap ’cause no one else was buying them. Who cares if there wasn’t a cartoon? How the hell do you pass up holograms? God damn stupid kids.

Matt: I had my play area in much the same way when I was a kid. I had the Masters of The Universe and Transformers melded to live on Cyber-ternia. I used the Super Naturals to haunt the plains of Cyber-ternia. They were the sages of the planet who both sides, evil and good went to in time of need. The corresponding Super Natural would aide the corresponding side. They were indeed te creepiest part of the creepiest depths of Cyber-ternia. In fact, when the Ghostbusters accidentially got transported to Cyber-ternia, the Super Naturals and them had a few good back and forths. Thanks for helping bring back such good memories.
Oh and Cheetara, happy belated b-day. Hope it was fun!

Man, flashback, I don’t know if I had it, or someone else did and I got it from them or what, but I seem to recall having the Eagle Eye action figure at some point, loose and not with any shield or anything…I don’t know why, seeing as I was 16 when they came out and I really didn’t spend my money on action figures back then…All I remember really is looking at it and wondering why it was a guy whose hologram body changed into an eagle guy…

Sorry for jumping out of the conversation. I still have Tendril’s head, but that’s about it. My old toy collection is a serious inigma to me. Why just the head? I must be repressing some memories or something.

Chestnuts roasted by Fox @ 10/18/2008 7:39 AM

i had a few of these , but they always played second fiddle to my Masters of the Universe figures … Kinda like Skeletors baster sidekicks when Beast Man and Merman were out of town.

I really prefered Visionaries to them though ( sorry Matt) they fit in well with my over whelming GI Joe collection and could share vehicles , once Cobra Commander got hold of the mind control visonairy ship it was all over

I have to admit I’m not familiar with this figure line. As a kid, I was encouraged to not really be into toys too much (mean parents!), and the only line I really collected was my beloved Masters Of The Universe. But I know I would have loved this line. It has two of the greatest things – action figures, and holograms. What kid could resists that killer combination?!

I actually liked those little ghost dudes more than the full size leg havers! I never really was into these guys at all,but my friend had some.
Lion heart looks a little lah-de-dah if you ask me.

Oh, hell yes. I was actually thinking of sending you an email asking you to write about these… it’s high time they got their proper little tribute. I have Skull, the pirate with the x-ray eye, and supposedly he’s the leader, even though his power seems useless compared to the other two. And if he turns from a grizzled pirate into a skeleton, isn’t that more like everyone ELSE having x-ray vision? Anyway, thanks for writing about these, and congratulations on managing to photograph Burnheart from exactly the right angles to make his forms visible. Damn holograms are hard to capture on film.

I used to have a couple of them myself & always wondered why they never caught on as I thought they should have….Ah memories…. If you wanna see a commercial for them here goes….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ5hOG5FEJ4 enjoy all.

I never had any of these or Visionaries, but I remember them.  I DO have a Visionaries comic book from back in the day.  God, I’ve got some embarrassing comics.

billy: at your suggestion, I watched that Ghost Adventures show last night. It was definitely better than some of the other ghost hunter shows, esp when you could actually hear the voices they’d recorded. I saw the one in the bar/music club, whatever it was. I wasnt so convinced about the “scratches” since you couldnt see them with the night vision (could’ve already been there), but when they recorded the lady voice and then the man voice saying “Precious, no,” I was definitely creeped out.

I just wish the main guy didn’t seem like such a Criss Angel douche. I can get over it if they keep getting results, though.

Thanks for the tip!

I still have my Visionaries Cravex with all accessories, and Arzon, minus his four-pointed dagger. I have always been pretty good with my toys, keeping most of the little doo-dads they come with. Too bad SuperNaturals didn’t have a cartoon. When they first came out, Little Brother and I would joke about the name, “Does that mean they’re extra naked?” A bit esoteric, but it was funny to us.

Teddy Ray-if you’ve got some embarassing comics, please tell me you have the WWF Battlemania comics.  They’re the pinnacle of embarassing shit I’ve owned.

Matt-they’re a must see if you haven’t read them already.  Sadly, all of mine are gone :(

I almost got a Supernatural once.  It was a Friday night when I was in 2nd grade.  My brother and I had just got our report cards, and we were at Hills with our parents.  My mom love holograms, and she showed off the Supernaturals to my dad.  He said he would buy us both one, but we just wanted GI Joe figures.  He begrudgingly agreed to it because we got our report cards that day.  I’m glad I didn’t get the Supernatural, because that would have been one toyline I would focus on buying, when in fact I never would have had that chance.  And plus, there wasn’t a cartoon show.

Reading your blog made me think back to all the huge epic Action Figure storylines of my youth.  Mine were very similar to your actually, I wish I could remember them in more detail.  I just remember that they all followed one long Continuity.
