Halloween Countdown ’08: Ghostbusters Cereal!

Over the years, I've collected many, many boxes of vintage cereal. Full, sealed boxes, I mean. This isn't something I tend to bring up upon first meeting someone, but I prefer to think that everyone's weird behind closed doors.

My collection is fairly enormous, and I recently noticed that some of the brands have a distinctly macabre theme. With department store Halloween stock running thin and my mind losing its battle to resist Christmas anticipation, now seemed like a good time to give these spooky cereals their heydays. Here's the first of 'em...

This is weird. Kinda cathartic. I've had a "Ghostbusters Cereal" review on deck since 2002, and if you don't believe me, here's the unbuilt article. Not sure why I never got around to writing it, but even after a six year gestation, I'm as enthusiastic over the concept as ever. A combination of increased health consciousness and revised child-targeted advertising laws has sucked most of the charm from the cereal aisle, and though cartoon and movie-themed brands continue to exist, I don't think they'd make for the same kind of life-altering event that this one did.

Arriving as a result of The Real Ghostbusters' success, "Ghostbusters Cereal" debuted in 1986 and actually managed to last for several years, being constantly tweaked to reflect the changing tones (and titles) of its corresponding cartoon show. Later editions included radioactive green Slimer marshmallows among other wacky shit, but this box is one of the originals.

Doesn't even look much like a cereal box, right? Between the dark palette and the giant hologram (if you can't tell, the Ghostbusters are pictured within it), this was a strange package to find stocked next to the banal facades of Frosted Flakes and Corn Pops. It felt like something you'd find in a toy store, so it's easy to understand why few kids could resist its graces when tagging along with Ma at the supermarket.

Despite being older than some of you reading this, the cereal has held up pretty well. The ghost-shaped marshmallows look like they've shrunken a bit, but this is to be expected. In human years, the marshmallows would be well into their nineties. Old people shrink.

Aside from the marshmallows, there's an assortment of fruity "No Ghost" symbols, erected in corn flour. I've long loathed cereals that mix marshmallows with a "fruit medley" flavor, but kids don't go for stuff like this because of the taste. There could've been veal-wrapped pyrite in there, and we still would've forced ourselves to name it one of our favorite brands. After all, "Ghostbusters Cereal" depicted Slimer eating a portion of the nutritional label on the box's side panel. You can't disrespect that.

The cartoon's popularity was so enormous that Ralston didn't bother to play it safe by calling this a "limited edition" cereal. No, they went right for the jugular and positioned the stuff as a rookie top brand.

The commercials were unforgettable, featuring an animated happy ghost lunging from the "No Ghost" logo to make breakfast for a couple of little kids who may as well have been us. If the opening credits of the animated series taught me anything, it's that the quickest avenue to Babylon is the sight of that sad ghost from the show's logo getting to wander freely with a big smile on his face. It's a phenomena I cannot explain, but that's a common trait in supernatural dealings.

It's hard to take a new cereal seriously when its parent company forgoes the traditional big budget thirty-second spot, and much of the success of "Ghostbusters Cereal" can be attributed to the many Saturday mornings we spent soaking up its TV ads in-between chunks of Smurf-related programming.

Does anyone remember the Ghostbusters cereal that came with a record? A real record that you played on a record player. There was also a contest to win a trip to the set or something.

Never ate the cereal, but definately remember the box.

I was a huge fan of the cartoon and had a majority of the toys they made with it.

Hey gang. A little update:

1. Totally remember, ate, and bought that cereal multiple times. Holograms for the win. It is so pathetic to me (as a former graphic designer) that C-3P0′s and this cereal’s box have never been equaled in 20 years. Seriously.

2. My new department store job is AWESOME. I love it. But hours on my feet rendered two toes numb, even though I’m in decent shape. I’m ordering MBT shoes from England. Anyone got a pair? Google em they are WEIRD.

3. Anyone who says Christmas comes too early? These people do not work at department stores. I spent like 5 hours today in a freakin winter wonderland of trees, ornaments and snow stuff, setting up Christmas dishes. It was enormous fun, and I’m ready to say screw Tgiving, it is ON for Christmas!!

I’m trying to get worked up about Halloween, but working within the heart of Christmas itself makes me really damn jolly, and not so much scary.

I seem to recall having this once or twice, but my favorite (no longer in existence) cereal was the Ralston TMNT/Spider-Man cereals. I really wish those would make a comeback.

Matt – Any chance the video of the Ghostbusters commercial is up for viewing?

LOVED Egon’s hair in the show.

Looked kinda like Morrisey’s.

Razzy the Cat I felt the same way about Egons hair. He was my fav character on the show because of it. I was just amazed that a character could have hair like that, even in a cartoon show.

Terror Claws I am glad you are liking your new job. If you want to be scared into the Halloween spirit then click on the “controversial full frontal male nudity” link in the blog our beloved Bill (veggiemacabre.wordpress.com) posted this morning. It’s a real scream lol!! I am kind of toying with the idea in my head to ask for your mailing address so I can send you a little somethin’ somethin’ for Christmas this year… you pulled on my heartstrings the other day with all of the “First Christmas with no presents in a decade” stuff.

Awww, Goob yer the best. Is there a small tear smiley?

Wow, as someone who prides himself on being the resident GB fanatic within his little circle of nerdy friends, I can’t believe I forgot about this cereal.

Though I am but all of 24 years (like the movie, I too was “released” in the Summer of ’84), seeing the pictures of that box art brings back surprisingly vivid memories of my one and only encounter with the RGB cereal. I know that I had to have been quite young at the time, but like others have mentioned, I remember cutting out the hologram and keeping it as a cherished prize for quite a while. As for the cereal itself? Seeing the cereal nestled in a happy little bowl, I can almost taste the sickly sweet fruity flavor and that odd, vaguely fruity sugar-milk it left behind. Also, I remember that I had to convince my aunt to buy me my one and only box, as my parents were vehemently against any and all cereals containing marshmallows… which would explain why I now go out of my way to buy as much Count Chocula during the month of October as is humanly possible.

Anyhow, thanks for bringing back a great childhood memory. Now if only my mom hadn’t have gotten rid of my childhood “junk” drawer all those years ago then I might actually still have that sweet, sweet hologram.

No Terror Claws, but there is apparently a foot in mouth smiley lol. WTF is that about. It apparently still won’t post :(

Catching up — JUST got home from work.

This cereal is awesome! I was also one of the unfortunates who was not allowed to have sugar cereal, so of course I missed out on this. But I do remember the hologram box at the grocery store! Glad to hear a good DVD version of RGB is coming out — I may have to violate my no-buying-DVDs-til-they’re-dirt-cheap-on-Amazon policy to pick those up!

And since I missed the Crystal Head Vodka discussion (And do tell whether it’s any good or not), my newest vice is Sweet Tea Vodka made by Firefly Vodka (check em out at http://www.fireflyvodka.com if you’re legal…) You can only get it in certain states, and I had to have a friend bring it back from South Carolina, but damn it is good!

Must… buy… Real Ghostbusters… complete DVD…

Oh yeah, that’s going on the Xmas list…

Chestnuts roasted by Captain Will @ 10/16/2008 1:38 AM

OH YES I remember this cereal! I loved it! It was as awesome as the cartoon series. I also ate tons of TMNT cereal as a kiddo and much later…even some Pokemon cereal… yah I know….

I started Christmas shopping in freakin…. JUNE so whatever to that.. I like to get it done early. I proudly brought home some wrapping paper along with some Halloween goodies just the other day. Im already threatening to decorate for Christmas the day after Halloween is over (cos Im going to SO miss all the festive decorations) but no one else is as enthusiastic about it. Then again, I get all excited over Halloween stuff like glitter banners and basket that has a bat on the handle.

Its just soooo awesome…

I wanted a cool costume this year and the only thing I made myself promise was to buy something that would go with my goth boots. I don’t really own any fancy footwear that would look nice with princess costumes or something, but those boots are awesome. So I bought this costume that’s supposed to be a witch costume, but it doesn’t look like one. Its black with a peasant like top and a frilly little skirt… and has a cat and moon down on the bottom of the skirt part… Im probably going to wear cat ears and black fairy wings and be a FAIRY CAT! Of course no one is going to know WHAT it is but I dont really care that much. Both of my daughters are going to be Tinkerbell (their choice, not mine) so… yeah.

Thank you, Goob. A quick trip to Wikipedia says the show ended in 1991, so I was probably 4 when I ate the cereal. Go brain team!

Mystie, by “KoP” did you mean King of Prussia? If so, I’ll see you there!

I loved this cereal when I was a kid. I used to wish those dudes would pop off the box… I had the suit with the proton pack and a little trap that had a lil glo in the dark sSlimer. SO SICK!!! The cartoon was good as well…
And for the record, I would totally eat that cereal…. Maybe even 10 years down the road old… Nice article!

–>> .. wanted those holgram t-shirts they offered with this series of cereals for a tag-along promotion.

Specially the GB or TMNT one.

After I got burned by the Crispy Critters cereal, I never trusted another one that didn’t have marshmallows or the word “Frosted” in the name.

We didn’t get Ghostbusters cereal here in the U.K. …Why do ALL of my x-e comments typically include “we didn’t get…. here in the U.K.”?!
But anyway, if we had have done, I know it would have been my favourite cereal. For a period in the later 1980s, taking over from Masters of the Universe (which I still love to this day), Ghostbusters was my favourite thing on the planet!! I watched the cartoon, bought the (often pretty rubbbish) Marvel comic, knew every word on the story tapes… if there was a Ghostbusters connection, I was there!
As already has been mentioned, the whole series is coming out on DVD on November 15th (personally I think they missed a trick by not releasing it on Halloween). I’ve got many of the episodes already on old VHS, but I’m certainly ordering my copy!

Why is it Ralston came out with all the cool cereals? Between this and Donkey Kong Cereal (which I loved even if it was only Captain Crunch), the Nintendo Cereal and I think they even had the TMNT license… I miss those cereals and wish Ralston would bring back their sugary goodness to rot the teeth out of children (and adults) everywhere once again!

Ralston has got to be the most unappetizing name. It makes me think of miniature farm equipment before fruity marshmallow cereal. But I remember owning this back in the day! I even cut off the hologram and had it on the wall for a while :)
btw Matt, what were the two other holograms? Were they mentioned on the back? My memory recalls Slimer in one and a power pack with ghost trap as the other.
