Halloween Countdown ’08: Trick or Tater!

It's October. Officially. It's the proper beginning of the Halloween season, but perhaps more importantly, the start of three solid months of holiday season madness, where we're free to bury our troubles and responsibilities under a blanket of decorations, television specials and wishful thinking. It's the most charmed trimester of the year, no matter what you say.

Though I know that a great many of you are already longing for snowmen and gingerbread, remember, this is Halloween's month to shine. I hereby order you to watch at least a dozen horror movies between now and November. I hereby order you to carve a pumpkin, even if the magic of said activity dissipated when you were in grade school. I hereby order you, assuming you are of legal age, to drink some form of novelty cocktail named after something macabre.

You can watch the trees die, you can listen to the wind blow, you can eat more than your typical monthly average of fun-sized Snickers bars. But it's easy to do those things. Go a little deeper, try a little harder, and you won't wake up on November 1st wondering why the Halloween season felt like early spring. I speak from experience.

I'd hoped to start the October run of Countdown entries with something extra special, but work went long today. Instead, uh...Mr. Potato Head?

Just the latest in Hasbro's ever-growing series of adorably named Mr. Potato Head spinoffs, the "Trick or Tater" set promises to transform your favorite anthropomorphic tuberous crop vegetable into the spookiest spud ever. This paragraph was my bid to write Hasbro's trade materials.

But wait, what's that I sense from you? Discontent? You have a good memory. It's true that this set repeats almost all of the body parts and accessories from a vintage Potato Head kit, but considering what Hasbro added to the mix this year, we're lucky they didn't charge twice as much. More on this momentarily.

The only real difference in the collection of core body parts is the black fedora, which replaces the much cooler Dracula hairpiece from the previous set. It took me a while to digest what seemed like such an intentionally senseless downgrade, but the truth is, they had to get rid of the Dracula wig. To make the big surprise bonus ingredient work, a hat was absolutely necessary. Look below, and thank above.

Yes, the "Trick or Tater" set includes a ghost sheet costume, which rests snugly over our hero's bulbous brown body, kept in place by his eyes and fedora. Instantly, Mr. Potato Head is fresh and exciting. This is just perfect, but if you need some extra gravy, note that his eyes glow in the dark! And he comes with a pumpkin purse!

One would assume that the decades-spanning potato-decorating initiative would've reached its maximum potential by now, but Hasbro somehow topped all prior efforts. And all it took was a hand towel from a two-star hotel.

The package includes an inbuilt "to and from" gift tag, and it warms my heart to see that we're now urged to buy our children presents for Halloween. With trick-or-treating slowly becoming something people "used to do," we're going to need some kind of tangible materialism to keep the bitch afloat.

After all, it isn't a holiday if you don't get free stuff. That's why we're all so apathetic on Thanksgiving. What, you thought it was the tryptophan? Clueless toad.

Oh man, seeing Potato Head in full ghost costume makes me want to rush out to Target and buy him!!  But how many Potato Heads does one person need?  I already have Darth Tater, two make-your-own Disney World potatoes, and an Easter Bunny Potato Head.

Ultraman: Good to hear you have nice fall weather, too. It’s dark and cold and VERY rainy here, with lots of thunderstorms. I so love it.

Ultra, thanks.  Can’t wait!

Hey Matt (and everyone else), I just noticed that “Ghoulies 2″ is available for free viewing on Hulu. Just a heads up for all of us who want to meet our 1 dozen horror movie quotas!

Speaking of Jones Soda Halloween flavors, I have tried their “Pomegranate _____”, which features a vampire on the can.  (Sorry, I forgot the official name)  It was pretty darn good.  I considered buying the candy corn-inspired flavor, but decided against it.

Maybe it was a wise decision. Oh, by the way, Matt, where did that Trick or Tater come from?  Toys ‘R Us or Target?  My lady likes to decorate for the fall/Halloween season and I could probably justify the purchase in her eyes.

TF, I think it’s from Target. I see them at the Target where I work on a pretty regular basis now that it’s Spooky Time. Spooky Time is a registered trademark of the Kpibca Foundation and may only be used with written permission from the owner and CEO of the Kpibca Foundation (The Company), and only in reference to Halloween.

I’m sorry if you guys missed me ‘pauses for laughter’ I spent a little over an hour watching this kid’s videos.   I really like him he’s intense.  I would subscribe but youtube is doing it’s douchebag thing by having parts of it’s site down for maintenance which it feels like just yesterday it did.  I try to justify not being upset but I am a little annoyed.  I broke the counter of how many videos I have viewed on youtube to over 15,000 the other day so I think you can see why this is annoying to me.  Especially because about 10 minutes after a kid that I have been talking to this last 3 days or so uploaded a video explaining to me what he wanted to do on windows movie maker.  I haven’t gotten the chance to email him back.  I didn’t know he was a minor I swear!  His account says he’s 23.  The children swarm to me on youtube.  I feel it’s my duty to be polite to them to give them some hope about the internet world.  Even though it’s annoying being a free babysitter.

But anyway this kid that made the videos I was watching is really neat.  He loves horror movies and Halloween.  He has had a chucky doll since he was 7 and growing up used to carry it everywhere.  He to me is like a mix of Matt and theamazingathiest.  I want to tell him all about our Halloween countdown but the friggin maintenence on youtube thing… augh.  If I am lucky my kid will turn out that way.  Let’s hope :)

Here is a sample of his work.  He is talking about his fasination with horror movies and a bio of his life and interests.

Hey ladies and gents

Halloween is just around the corner and Hershey has come out with their seasonal line of holiday flavored Hershey Kisses!!!! Woo!

This fall they have 3 flavors to pick from

Candy Corn

Pumpkin Spice

Caramel Apple (Sam’s Club / Wal*mart exclusive)

Onto the taste test!

They are going to be rated anywhere from 1 little hershey printed paper flag(as in the little papery flag things that say hershey on the kisses)to 10

The Candy corn flavor: it looks like a candy corn shaped as a Hershey Kiss. The taste is a smooth buttery flavor, like butterered popcorn flavored Jelly Bellies, and undertones of butterscotch flavor as well.8 paper flags outta 10 because of the odd but quickly dissapearing after taste when you eat too many at once

Pumpkin Spice flavor: This one is my personal favorite of the three. I have an obsession with all things pumpkin flavored, due to the happy and fuzzy feelings I get this time of year and the cool air and the wonderful smells.
*ahem* sorry for the rambling…Okay…these have a very pleasing pumpkin and cinammon spice flavor, much like pumpkin pie filling…The kiss itself is the color of orange fall leaves, and the middle is a creamy pumpkin pie flavored cheesecake type filling. You’ll swear it was Thanksgiving day, the pumpkin taste is so realistic. Don’t be surprised if you finish half a bag in one sitting.

The only drawback is the mushy consistency if you don’t stick em in the freezer as soon as you get home. I and some other candy reviewers beleive this is due to the density of the kiss with the heavy filling and everything.

These little suckers get 10 flags outta 10 mushiness aside, they are still heaven.

Caramel Apple Flavored These are a Wal*Mart / Sam’s Club exclusive. There is a pleasant apple scent that greets you upon opening the bag, akin to a crisp fall day and apple pies. The kiss itself is the traditional Milk Chocolate Hershey Kiss, and the filling is a wonderfully gooey caramel ooze married to the juicy crispness of green apples. These are my second favorite next to the pumpkin spice flavor, and they are suprisingly firm and do not really need the refrigeration, unless you prefer to eat your kisses a bit chilled. These lovelies get 9.5 flags out of 10

At usually 2.50 a bag, they aren’t cheap but not insanely expensive either. You can get them on sale depending where you shop as well. They also offer some interesting brownie and cookie recipes on the back of each package, which I have not had time to try yet.

And so…dear friends, I implore you to check your local Target and Walmart stores for these delectable treats. You will not be sorry

Ugh why am I still up so late…

My girlfriend and I freaking love the candy corn kisses. Those things are amazing. If you eat too many, though, they start to taste banana-y. Really looking forward to trying the pumpkin ones later this season. Also! I opened a pack of Ghost Dots a couple weeks back and there was a frigg’n RED one in there. It was possibly haunted/poison, but I ate it anyway. Hope there wasn’t some cool contest going on (find the blue Princess!! Remember that from the old Mario fruit snacks?)

P.S. Just got a Wii so once I find my code I’ll post it and everyone can wreck me on Brawl. Has anyone tried any Wii homebrew yet? Lots of cool apps and stuff to choose from.

It’s Buried Pomegranite, Magic Toy. Candy corn is still my favorite, hands down.

Thank you Mandy for your ‘ahem’ through review.  I am looking forward to getting the pumpkin ones and the caramel apple ones.  I want to make Caramel apples this season!  I have never made them before.  I love the Caramel apple suckers.  Those are GOOD.  I want to get a traditional pumpkin pie blizzard this season too.  It’s a tradition since… last year.  They aren’t as rich as they could be but they are good.  We have a pumpkin cake kit w/ caramel topping, cream cheese frosting and chopped walnuts.  We ate the other one so we have one to go.

Eddie, I think the main one they have online is the one that you boot from zelda.  You can play nes games from that one.  i have never used it but I have watched a few videos about it.  I use orb.com to watch videos through my wii onto our big screen from my computer.  So that is handy.  There are free flash games online that are more fun to play on your wii then on your computer out there.  Like the ones on wiiarcade.com so that is a worthy bookmark once you pay 5 dollars to buy the browser.

Well actually, you can envision this Tater Head Pumpkin as a slasher tater figure.  Remember the scene in Halloween when Michael puts on the sheet and pretends to be Bob dressed up as a ghost?  Just imagine that Michael is a giant potato, and BAM! you got the scene recreated here.

Yes, it is Robert Englund as Freddy in “Are You Ready for Freddy” but not RE as Freddy in “Nightmare on My Street.”

I’m really surprised they haven’t rushed out a Batman and Joker Mr Potato Head. Not necessarily for Halloween, just in general.

Chestnuts roasted by Cleavy @ 10/02/2008 7:53 AM

Mandy   I have to say the Pumpkin Spice kisses to me were just not a 10 quality.  I liked thme yes but felt the cinnamon was over powering the pumpkin.   But Don’t get me wrong i still ate the whole bag already.

A Halloween treat from the Child’s Play DVD, the Good Guy toy collection:

Gotta love that they “released” a “Good Guy Sub-Machine Gun”. lol

Chestnuts roasted by Barry @ 10/02/2008 8:34 AM

Barry that is funny.  I was always impressed how deep the first movie was into the Good Guy corporation.  Beings they had no clue how popular the first movie would be while they were spending money on it.

Just heard that WalMart is trying to kickstart Christmas shopping by offering the “hot” toys of the season for $10. If anybody finds a great deal, I’d love to know about it. Happy wish it was Friday :-P

Sweet Potato Head.  The only Mr. Potato Head I’ve ever had was the Optimus Prime version.  My friends brought it to me when I was in the hospital.

I ate the pumpkin kiss by accident cause I grabbed some from a bowl at work. It tastes like pumpkin pie. Awesome.

Whoa, it’s windy and cold here in Staten Island today. October truly is here.
