09/27/2008: Halloween Countdown ‘08: Whatever-O’-Lantern Contest!

Let’s go with a nice, normal, random SNT for today. I can’t find any really on-target horror movies for everyone to pretend to watch together, but since we’ll be in October by next weekend, I expect tons of hockey masks and chainsaws all over the television.

Course, I don’t want you to spend the weekend longing for some kind of spooky activity, so let’s do a new contest — one that will take a little more effort than last week’s, but with the chance to win a bigger prize…

Remember this guy? My Horrormelon from this past July? Well, there’s your basic inspiration — now here’s your challenge.

Carve a jack-o’-lantern out of something other than a pumpkin It can be anything — fruit, vegetable, animal, mineral…whatever. The more unique your creation, the better. Since this contest calls for a serious amount of hands-on effort, I’m going to part with an extra special prize:

Yup, one grand prize winner will receive The Nightmare On Elm Street Collection, a big, awful DVD box set containing each and every Freddy Krueger movie, except that one where Jason cut his arm off. (If you want to enter but already have this set, no worries — I’ll give you something else.) Two runners-up will receive single-film horror DVDs of my choosing.

I’ll give you all weekend to build your masterpiece. All entries must be received by noon EST on Monday, September 29th. Once you’re finished with your creation, e-mail me a photo. I’ll spotlight the winners along with more of the best entries next weekend, so even if you don’t win, your whatever-o’-lantern will still be seen by however many people read this site.

Speaking of which, check out ten more entries from the “Draw Jason Dancing” contest, after the jump!

Excellent pictures. I’ll see what I can do for a Whatever-O-Lantern

Yay! I’m famous now. Gonna go find something to carve. I’d carve my cat for that collection.

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 09/27/2008 1:27 PM EDT

Sounds fun! Gonna get right on it.

Hmmmm….*eyes pear tree in backyard*

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 09/27/2008 1:42 PM EDT

Matt..

awww, I’m so tempted to enter this…does it have to be fruit or veg, by the way? Or can the Jack-O-lantern be carved out of any material?..just wondering

(PS YAY! FOURTH! The earliest I’ve ever reached on a SNT thread!!!)

Ghosted by divechaz @ 09/27/2008 1:44 PM EDT

dammit, …fifth! Ah well,…I’m STILL too psyched with the Halloween countdown to care hehe!

Ghosted by divechaz @ 09/27/2008 1:46 PM EDT

Darth Poop – just so you know, your winning entry is currently my desktop wallpaper.  It’s so awesome!
Matt – I was at Target the other night and the Halloween section is already taking a bit hit from incoming Christmas stuff.  Growing up, they at least waited until Halloween to start doing that.  How much farther can they push it?

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 09/27/2008 1:55 PM EDT

* big hit

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 09/27/2008 1:55 PM EDT

Oh, the entries posted are very nice. Good job, everybody!
Hm, hm, what could I carve a Jack ‘o Lantern into without killing myself by accident? I’ll have to look around the house..

Ghosted by Kapprika @ 09/27/2008 2:00 PM EDT

Sweet… I was needing something to do while I was at work… hmmm..now what can I use????

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 2:20 PM EDT

Yay, my piece of art was included! :) Now: what to carve, what to carve…?

Ghosted by Papa_Taz @ 09/27/2008 2:26 PM EDT

Paul Newman passed away today at 83.  Star of one of my fave all time movies….Cool Hand Luke.    His food was pretty good as well.  *starts waving celebrity finger of death*  let me get some batteries for my digital camera and I will do an O-lantern for the contest.

Oh…at costco today, they had a playdoh halloween bucket.  Basically trial size tubs of playdoh to give out instead of candy.  Good idea on paper, but when put into action, who wants ONE color?  You need at least AT LEAST 3 colors.

They also had there today, the same kind of blender used on “will it blend” from Youtube.  It’s also the official blender of Starbucks.  Cost 376 dollars!  It is just beautiful if you can afford it.  It makes icream and soup too.   and rice flour, corn flour, and still has enough power to blend an  i-pod…not that the demo guy blended one, but you get my drift?

Carve a jack-o’-lantern out of something other than a pumpkin  It can be anything — fruit, vegetable, animal, mineral…whatever.  The more unique your creation, the better.

Animal? Well, you know, next doors dog has been barking an annoying amount recently…

Ghosted by Guise @ 09/27/2008 3:01 PM EDT

Guise: Hm, disposing of unwanted stuff to get into the halloween spirit sounds nice. *g* My little sister has this super annoying CD …

Ghosted by Kapprika @ 09/27/2008 3:09 PM EDT

All right. Got my entry in early this time.  Diggin’ the contests this year.

MATT: Just want to say thanks… I have been able to kill almost an hour of my workday getting my whatever-a-lantern together. Now if only the next 3 1/2 hours go by so quick..lol.. This will be my first contest on your site but my hopes are high.

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 3:13 PM EDT

Probably won’t enter this as I’m really bad with knifes but if I were to enter this, I’d so go out and buy the The Nightmare On Elm Street Collection and carve it into a jack-o-lantern.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 09/27/2008 3:22 PM EDT

You could always shave a animal. That has to be more humane than putting an Halloween Costume on them.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 09/27/2008 3:35 PM EDT

Friday the 13th Part 2 is on at 11 on the chiller channel.

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 3:37 PM EDT

This is the earliest I’ve ever posted in a thread.  I might enter this contest…but what shall I carve?

Ghosted by Teddy Ray @ 09/27/2008 3:38 PM EDT

I really hope no one carves something into their skin…

Ghosted by Ricky @ 09/27/2008 3:42 PM EDT

I’ll watch NOES and NOES 2 tonight. There’s a channel here that shows them over and over again. Well, I’m not complaining. :)

Ghosted by Kapprika @ 09/27/2008 3:43 PM EDT

Forgive me if these items have already been discussed, but I just got home from Walgreen’s, where I bought a pre-lit Halloween-style Christmas tree for $20, and a bunch of awesome retro Halloween masks for 99 cents each.  They are made of foam and look like something my grandmother might have worn during the Depression:  witch, vampire, skull, devil, and Frankenstein.  It says “Kid’s Foam Mask” on the tags, but they fit better on my head than on any of my kids’.  They’re awesome, and because I am in love with all things Halloween and all things vintage, I’m hanging them on the wall as part of my Halloween decor.

Ghosted by anniemagus @ 09/27/2008 3:44 PM EDT

Kapprika, so which will you be carving the sister or the CD, or breaking the CD for a sharp edge and then…ooh, nasty.

Ghosted by Guise @ 09/27/2008 3:54 PM EDT

Now I’m torn.. I just found out my wife picked up Lego Batman on the xbox 360 for me so now do I watch a scary movie or save Gotham City??? Damnit the citizens of Gotham need me.

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 3:55 PM EDT

Arh! I need to go find somthing to Carve up..Never been much good with me hands :/

Ghosted by Blazer @ 09/27/2008 3:56 PM EDT

Guise: I suppose I’d carve the CD. My mother sort of looks down on mutilation of family members, you know. Heck, I’d probably get in trouble if I even messed up the CD. *g*

Ghosted by Kapprika @ 09/27/2008 3:57 PM EDT

I thought about shaving a jack-o-lantern into our cat but I don’t have a camera and I think everyone else would get pissed at me.

Ghosted by PhelpsPhan @ 09/27/2008 4:25 PM EDT

that Nightmare on Elm Street DVD set is one of my most prized possessions.. – i’d rank it right up there next to my original VHS copy of The Garbage Pail Kids Movie..

Ghosted by Review the World @ 09/27/2008 4:31 PM EDT

I just finished watching Devil’s Advocate for the first time. It was pretty good, and I don’t know how much more Halloweeny you can get than a movie about Satan as a lawyer.

Ghosted by Ben @ 09/27/2008 5:23 PM EDT

Kapprika, just explain to your mother that it’s to win a big prize and that you’ll let her revel in your glory. If she still protests use the “you never believed in me, you never wanted me to achieve…” arguement.

PhelpsPhan,  I’m sure sticking a shaved cat on a scanner works just as well, so long as you hold the lid down!

Ghosted by Guise carves kiddies and kitties for fun and profit @ 09/27/2008 5:24 PM EDT

I need a shave…. and a stencil…

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 09/27/2008 5:27 PM EDT

I tried to get my fiance to cut our orange cat’s bum fluff into a pumpkin shape, does that count? hehe

And now I’m off to douse myself in blood and root for some roller derby ladies!

Ghosted by Special K @ 09/27/2008 5:34 PM EDT

Guise, Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Guilt is such a wonderful thing …

Ghosted by Kapprika @ 09/27/2008 5:35 PM EDT

I have an idea for an entry, but I’m not really interested in the prize and would hate to take it from somebody who really wants it.  Maybe I’ll pass.

Ghosted by Annette @ 09/27/2008 5:40 PM EDT

Uh, I say that as if I think I’d actually win, which I probably wouldn’t.  Sorry for sounding like a pretentious asshole, hahaha.

Ghosted by Annette @ 09/27/2008 5:41 PM EDT

PhelpsPhan: If you shave a jack-o-lantern into your cat then I’m sure someone will take a picture for you.

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 5:41 PM EDT

Annette:  I say go for it. And hey if you win and don’t want the prize just see if he will hold it iver for the next contest. I think we are going to see some pretty creative ideas on this one though.

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 5:50 PM EDT

Wha?  My two awesome Jason entries didn’t make the first or second group?  Well then, until Matt shows them all, I prefer to think of myself as 21st…juuuuuust outside looking in.  Obviously being in Army has eroded my once potent artistic skills and entering this jack-o-lantern contest would be pure folly.  My favorites from the Jason contest were the black and white Snoopy one by John T, with Linus playing for his life…and “Halloween Party” which proves no matter how many teens you’ve slaughtered you’re still going to be nervous dancing with a girl for the first time.  Hmmmm, maybe I can find a block of cheese I can carve a face into and then melt in the microwave, that might be good enough to win me a copy of Leprechaun 5: Leprechaun in the Hood.

Ghosted by whitemale_98 @ 09/27/2008 5:56 PM EDT

I think I gots myself an idea! Will inkpens do in lieu of actual carving?
Or duct tape?

I hear tell that Friday the 13th: The Series Season 1 is coming out on DVD. One of my favorite syndicated shows.

“Shaved Cat Scanner”? Isn’t that one of those SciFi Original Movies? From the same guys that gave us films like “Gorillasaurus Rex”, “Gorillasaurus Rex: Bikini Beach Party”, and “Gorillasaurus Rex Saves ChristmaHannaKwanzika”?

Ghosted by kingklash @ 09/27/2008 5:58 PM EDT

I’m just laughing at the terminology “shaved cat” hehe I’m so immature! I found 3 Mc’Punkins(actually one’s a McBoo) in my parents attic!  I stole them and took them home with me.  My mom informed me she threw away all of our old Halloween costumes b/c they “melted”

Ghosted by gingela5 @ 09/27/2008 6:05 PM EDT

Gingela5-  God I’m glad you posted that, thought I was the only one with a kink….but, why isn’t anyone shaving their dogs ass to look like pumpkins….. Guess a bald dog isn’t as desireable as a smooth cat………

Ghosted by RailPirate @ 09/27/2008 6:14 PM EDT

Good luck to everyone who enters the contest, If I had more of an imagination I would be entering!  Hope you all have a great Saturday!

Ghosted by Gregor @ 09/27/2008 6:15 PM EDT

kingklash – F13 the series is out now!

I’m going to take a stab (get it?) and guess that Hey I’m Jeff’s art depicts Jason and Violet from F15 Part V dancing the robot together to Psuedo Echo’s “In His Eyes”?  I have that song on my iPod!

Ghosted by BUCKLY! @ 09/27/2008 6:17 PM EDT

Gregor:  Sometimes the great ones are right in front of you with no imagination required. I’ve been looking at my entry for the contest for a couple of hours now trying to decide on if I should send it in or not.  I think it is pretty damn funny and start laughing everytime I see it but then again my humor is usually a little different from most peoples… … I think I’ll sit back down now.

Ghosted by slick316 @ 09/27/2008 6:22 PM EDT

You know it’s a boring Saturday when I’m watching “Sister Act II” on TV.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 09/27/2008 6:22 PM EDT

I think I may try the ole “While you were sleeping” art on the gf, I think she would look good as a jack-o-lantern!! I just hope she doesn’t wake up before my opus is completed, that F13 series is hangin in the balance, Lol…. I am steppin over the line here, ummm……

Ghosted by RailPirate @ 09/27/2008 6:27 PM EDT

Annette – I couldn’t find an email address on your blog, so I left my question in a comment.

Ghosted by Ricky @ 09/27/2008 6:28 PM EDT

Hmmmm… I may have to up my game if RailPirate is turning his sleeping gf into a jack-o-lantern. Damn you for making me creative.. hmmm will the zoo let you rent a polar bear?
