09/27/2008: Halloween Countdown ‘08: Whatever-O’-Lantern Contest!
Let’s go with a nice, normal, random SNT for today. I can’t find any really on-target horror movies for everyone to pretend to watch together, but since we’ll be in October by next weekend, I expect tons of hockey masks and chainsaws all over the television.
Course, I don’t want you to spend the weekend longing for some kind of spooky activity, so let’s do a new contest — one that will take a little more effort than last week’s, but with the chance to win a bigger prize…
Remember this guy? My Horrormelon from this past July? Well, there’s your basic inspiration — now here’s your challenge.
Carve a jack-o’-lantern out of something other than a pumpkin It can be anything — fruit, vegetable, animal, mineral…whatever. The more unique your creation, the better. Since this contest calls for a serious amount of hands-on effort, I’m going to part with an extra special prize:
Yup, one grand prize winner will receive The Nightmare On Elm Street Collection, a big, awful DVD box set containing each and every Freddy Krueger movie, except that one where Jason cut his arm off. (If you want to enter but already have this set, no worries — I’ll give you something else.) Two runners-up will receive single-film horror DVDs of my choosing.
I’ll give you all weekend to build your masterpiece. All entries must be received by noon EST on Monday, September 29th. Once you’re finished with your creation, e-mail me a photo. I’ll spotlight the winners along with more of the best entries next weekend, so even if you don’t win, your whatever-o’-lantern will still be seen by however many people read this site.
Speaking of which, check out ten more entries from the “Draw Jason Dancing” contest, after the jump!

Excellent pictures. I’ll see what I can do for a Whatever-O-Lantern
Yay! I’m famous now. Gonna go find something to carve. I’d carve my cat for that collection.
Sounds fun! Gonna get right on it.

Matt..
awww, I’m so tempted to enter this…does it have to be fruit or veg, by the way? Or can the Jack-O-lantern be carved out of any material?..just wondering
(PS YAY! FOURTH! The earliest I’ve ever reached on a SNT thread!!!)

dammit, …fifth! Ah well,…I’m STILL too psyched with the Halloween countdown to care hehe!

Darth Poop - just so you know, your winning entry is currently my desktop wallpaper. It’s so awesome!
Matt - I was at Target the other night and the Halloween section is already taking a bit hit from incoming Christmas stuff. Growing up, they at least waited until Halloween to start doing that. How much farther can they push it?
* big hit
Oh, the entries posted are very nice. Good job, everybody!
Hm, hm, what could I carve a Jack ‘o Lantern into without killing myself by accident? I’ll have to look around the house..

Paul Newman passed away today at 83. Star of one of my fave all time movies….Cool Hand Luke. His food was pretty good as well. *starts waving celebrity finger of death* let me get some batteries for my digital camera and I will do an O-lantern for the contest.
Oh…at costco today, they had a playdoh halloween bucket. Basically trial size tubs of playdoh to give out instead of candy. Good idea on paper, but when put into action, who wants ONE color? You need at least AT LEAST 3 colors.
They also had there today, the same kind of blender used on “will it blend” from Youtube. It’s also the official blender of Starbucks. Cost 376 dollars! It is just beautiful if you can afford it. It makes icream and soup too. and rice flour, corn flour, and still has enough power to blend an i-pod…not that the demo guy blended one, but you get my drift?

Probably won’t enter this as I’m really bad with knifes but if I were to enter this, I’d so go out and buy the The Nightmare On Elm Street Collection and carve it into a jack-o-lantern.

Forgive me if these items have already been discussed, but I just got home from Walgreen’s, where I bought a pre-lit Halloween-style Christmas tree for $20, and a bunch of awesome retro Halloween masks for 99 cents each. They are made of foam and look like something my grandmother might have worn during the Depression: witch, vampire, skull, devil, and Frankenstein. It says “Kid’s Foam Mask” on the tags, but they fit better on my head than on any of my kids’. They’re awesome, and because I am in love with all things Halloween and all things vintage, I’m hanging them on the wall as part of my Halloween decor.

I thought about shaving a jack-o-lantern into our cat but I don’t have a camera and I think everyone else would get pissed at me.

Posted by
PhelpsPhan @ 09/27/2008 4:25 PM EDT
that Nightmare on Elm Street DVD set is one of my most prized possessions.. - i’d rank it right up there next to my original VHS copy of The Garbage Pail Kids Movie..
I just finished watching Devil’s Advocate for the first time. It was pretty good, and I don’t know how much more Halloweeny you can get than a movie about Satan as a lawyer.

Posted by
Ben @ 09/27/2008 5:23 PM EDT
Kapprika, just explain to your mother that it’s to win a big prize and that you’ll let her revel in your glory. If she still protests use the “you never believed in me, you never wanted me to achieve…” arguement.
PhelpsPhan, I’m sure sticking a shaved cat on a scanner works just as well, so long as you hold the lid down!
I need a shave…. and a stencil…

Posted by
PlantMonster @ 09/27/2008 5:27 PM EDT
I tried to get my fiance to cut our orange cat’s bum fluff into a pumpkin shape, does that count? hehe
And now I’m off to douse myself in blood and root for some roller derby ladies!
Guise, Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Guilt is such a wonderful thing …

Posted by

Wha? My two awesome Jason entries didn’t make the first or second group? Well then, until Matt shows them all, I prefer to think of myself as 21st…juuuuuust outside looking in. Obviously being in Army has eroded my once potent artistic skills and entering this jack-o-lantern contest would be pure folly. My favorites from the Jason contest were the black and white Snoopy one by John T, with Linus playing for his life…and “Halloween Party” which proves no matter how many teens you’ve slaughtered you’re still going to be nervous dancing with a girl for the first time. Hmmmm, maybe I can find a block of cheese I can carve a face into and then melt in the microwave, that might be good enough to win me a copy of Leprechaun 5: Leprechaun in the Hood.

Posted by
whitemale_98 @ 09/27/2008 5:56 PM EDT
I think I gots myself an idea! Will inkpens do in lieu of actual carving?
Or duct tape?
I hear tell that Friday the 13th: The Series Season 1 is coming out on DVD. One of my favorite syndicated shows.
“Shaved Cat Scanner”? Isn’t that one of those SciFi Original Movies? From the same guys that gave us films like “Gorillasaurus Rex”, “Gorillasaurus Rex: Bikini Beach Party”, and “Gorillasaurus Rex Saves ChristmaHannaKwanzika”?

Posted by
kingklash @ 09/27/2008 5:58 PM EDT
I’m just laughing at the terminology “shaved cat” hehe I’m so immature! I found 3 Mc’Punkins(actually one’s a McBoo) in my parents attic! I stole them and took them home with me. My mom informed me she threw away all of our old Halloween costumes b/c they “melted”

Someone at the grocery store had a Freddy Sweater on. But he was all emo and annoying and probably didn’t know how cool the sweater is (I own one too, of course), or is wearing it “ironically,” or uses it to staunch the blood from his emo cuts and the tears from his AAAANNNGSSTT. I wanted to kick him with my freddy shoes, but alas, he’ll have to wait till I get them next week.
I know what I’m carving, and it’s going to be lame. But I’m amused.

Hello. I heard this is SNT, whatever that means. I baked for you.
Wow, only 80 entries so far? SNT is a little quiet.
Of course it is. Everybody left my house to go home, so now that I’m here where the action is supposed to be, you’re all out partying.
That seems a little unfair. I’m the sad old lady at the bar, drunkenly dancing alone in front of the jukebox.
On a not-related-to-anything topic, I have a new baby kitten. His name is Frank.

Kid Nicky @ 09/28/2008 12:07 AM EDT
Kid Nicky, could be the mystery’s gone. When you watch them now, you’re pretty sure what’s going to happen and how the story will end. It is sad when a romance dies, but when Jason closes a door, he opens a window. And then he puts your head through that window and hacks your limbs off.
Aw.. poop.. I missed the SNT because of college football.. and well.. to be honest.. I was also playing Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked (PS2).. it’s one of the better button mashers that I’ve ever played.. I’m posting this before I read anything.. so no spoilers please.
I second the pictures on the new kitty. I’m a .. cat lady.. obviously.
How anyone could tire of Jason flicks is UTTERLY beyond me! They’re the PERFECT flicks! Who needs mystery anyway. Well, I finished my entry for the contest a while ago, will send it in tomorrow. I’ll be here for a long while if any ya’ll wanna shoot the breeze.

Harr harr harr! I wonder if I could get me some supplies to do the brilliant idea I just had afore Monday.
I need to confess. I purchased Mega Man 9 earlier this week for the Wii and I’ve played it for roughly 10 minutes thus far, even though I have had free time. As someone who has been playing video games for over 25 years (originally on an Atari 2600, thanks to my older brothers), it pains me to say that I think I like the idea of still being a “gamer” more than I like the idea of actually playing the games I buy. If that makes any sense. I mean I bought Mass Effect last January… and I haven’t even had played it yet. I bought Jade Empire when it was new… and haven’t touched that yet either. Or to put it another way — one that will translate very well with many of my X-E brethren — I picked up SSBB when it was released, had every intention of playing it online against you guys, and never have. Something is wrong with me, and I apologize.

muppet baby, you sound like one cool teacher. I tried my best to be a cool teacher, but there’s only so much you can do with history. Any English teacher who teaches Stephen King is aces in my book. And I also request cat pics…will be adding my own cats to my new myspace profile soon. I’m up to 35 X-E friends…thanks, y’all!
I just added you, dude. I usually don’t use Myspace much but I figured what the hell.

Mandy Reeves - I did that. I am just waiting for anyone to need me to marry them.
I am also authorized to perform excorsisms, but through my other affiliation.
Aw man, I don’t think I have it in me to carve another item. Peppers and pineapples have already been covered. Maybe I can grab a roving wild turkey that has been stalking me from the wood line.
Matt, I don’t think you sister or brother will let their kids be alone with you after a showing of Killer Clowns from Outer Space. My uncle made me watch that when I was a kid and it’s true, I haven’t been the same since.

My dad made me watch Killer Klowns when I was a kid, and I became obsessed. He also used to bring me tapes of MST3K. I think he knew that deep down, I had inherited his bad taste in media and just needed that little push.
I recently saw a movie called The Calamari Wrestler. This was the best bad film I’ve seen in a long while. I highly recommend it.
Rev, why are you not just marrying together random people you see on the street or in grocery store queues? “Hey you, married? See that woman there? You are now!”
Guise, I am also qualified to perform short-duration marriage ceremonies. I’m pretty sure I’ve been married to a number of my friends in a true cult-style mass short duration marriage ceremony.
Even though it’s over now, I still wish my ex spouses all the best in their future endeavors, and frequently have them over for dinner.
Do mass marriages follow up with mass honeymoons and mass divorces?
There is no need for divorce - the short duration marriage is over whenever the parties decide it is. How they consummate the marriage on their honeymoon is really between the newlyweds.
It is an ideal approach to marriage, really, because not everybody is lucky enough to marry the kind of person *I* married.
I think I’m going to have a non-denominational wedding and a handfasting. I’m Wiccan and the bf is a Chaote so I figure that’s the best course of action. Of course first he needs to get a job in my area and move his ass here which is proving to be a problem seeing as he still can’t pass a piss test. @_@

Oh man I LOVE Killer Klowns from Outer Space! This flick was the main reason I was not a huge fan of clowns when I was a kid.

I bow to you , Matt, as the true master of the impulse purchase. I was a Target on my annual Halloween Shopping Binge and I got the Haunted Evening DVD. Taht DVD is going to be number one on a classic movie list on the future because of you.

First time posting on X-E, right on time for a contest! This ought to be good.
I hope you can too Ultraman.
I have had a copy of Killer Clowns from Outer space for a few months now. I just needed the inspiration to watch it. I just got done watching it. For a cheesy campy movie it looked like they spent a lot of money on it. I liked it. Does anyone have a link for the mystery science theater version? I want to watch that too. I looked on youtube for it and came up with nothing. Do they feature it or do they actually do commentary on it?

Goob: I’m tryin to figure it out, but i keep gettin stumped. It says the address is undeliverable for some reason. I sent Matt an e-mail, maybe he can help me. It also says the pic is too big, but i scaled it down as far as it would go.

Then maybe you should upload it to a site and then send him a link. That way you don’t send it as an attachment. Photolava.com is a great one. You don’t have to sign up for an account it remembers your computer. You set it to public and then send him the URL.

Regarding KIller Klowns: What a treasure. I avoided it in my youth because the VHS case totally freaked me out, and avoided it for a long time as an adult because I thought it looked too “spoofy.” (I avoid a lot of Troma and like-styled films for that reason.) When I finally watched it a few years ago, imagine my surprise — just a totally great movie, which was a total labor of love for its creators, with a totally likable (if a little goofy) cast, and some of the best monsters in movie history. The clowns (Klowns?) brought some laughs, but they were also pretty scary/freaky, right down to their disembodied electrified laughs.
Plus, it has 24’s Walt Cummings as one of the star characters, and Royal Dano in a ridiculous cameo. I won’t lie and say that it’s a super exciting movie (by the time it’s over, you’ve seen enough), but it’s really worth seeing once or twice.
Also, ULTRAMAN: I’m not sure why your e-mail won’t go through. Try uploading on Photobucket or something and sending me the link?

Is it just me, or is the font different in Matt’s post?
Killer Klowns is what made me afraid of.. uh.. evil clowns. Stupid cable on late at night.
Original Nightmare on Elm Street on IFC right now.
Finished, finally finished. I’ll send you the picture tomorrow before noon Matt. Thanks for having such a great contest.
As an aside, I lurked/posted occasionally a while back (try a few years). I remember a Marine or Army guy (US) posting from Germany. I can’t for the life of me remember who it is. Halp?

Phil, that would be Erik Majorwitz. Hasn’t been around in awhile.
Goob, Killer Klowns from Outer Space wasn’t ever on MST3K. They may have done a Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic but Google doesn’t seem to think so.
I saw and was traumatized by Killer Klowns at an aunt’s house as a kid. Never had an issue with clowns before that, but that did it. Then I learned about Gacy a few years later and it got worse.
ever seen that movie based on gacy? freaked me out entirely. as for killer klowns, i haven’t ate cotton candy ever since….

Thank you squee. A couple people mentioned it but I think it might of just been a presentation of the movie and not an actual episode. Johnny_Von yes I have! I read about him before online. He has killed the most people in America. I have always felt those people that smelled the stench from his house that later found out what the stench was probably had post traumatic stress disorder after that. I know I would. Another great movie is an American Crime. It has Ellen Page in it. That kind of thing fascinates me, if I were to apply myself I would go to college and major in criminal psychology.

almost anything involving serial killers is interesting, except ramierez.. i dont think killing a few people and cutting a pentagram in your hand should get you that kind of attention, as for the cotest my creation is complete!
Night owls: I don’t have to be in the office tomorrow, which means I can stay up very late, which means I am posting a new entry before going to bed, which means you can read it if you’re going to be up all night like Rhonda Shear.
