09/26/2008: Halloween Countdown: Freaky Friday.

“Lighted Hair Critters.” I never would’ve predicted that this phrase could hold such meaning for me, but here I am.

There’s a definite trend with this year’s gamut of Halloween toys and novelties. Whereas many companies formerly marketed their spooky-themed “little things” as giveaways for trick-or-treaters, there are no such illusions this year. I’ve mentioned it before, but Halloween toys are now treated like veritable stocking stuffers, and I’m sure that it’s only a matter of time before we can buy giant socks made out of black wool and fishnets. It’s sad to see old fashioned trick-or-treat items in such a slump, but if the end result is a three-pack of “Lighted Hair Critters,” change is good.

I buy a lot of crap for these Halloween Countdowns, but not all of it gets written about. Some of the stuff just ends up being too mundane to score even a few paragraphs off of, and I certainly worried that this trio of souped-up Koosh balls would end up in my growing bin of regretful purchases. But over the past week, I’ve found myself just growing more and more fond of them, and at press time, I’m like five smiles away from christening these worthless entities as my favorite things in the universe.

I don’t know what it is about them, exactly. Maybe it’s the innate oddity of rubber bushes with eyes that gets me, or maybe I just admire the Wild Time company for having the balls to try to pass these things off as “Halloween” toys. I’m not sure if there’s anything macabre about rubber sea urchins with Mr. Potato Head eyes, but since the packaging comes in black-and-orange with spider web graphics, we must accept them that way.

They toys can be thrown or stretched, but since you can say the same for nearly everything on the planet, Wild Time devised an additional gimmick to help the Lighted Hair Critters stand out: They blink colored lights when you punch them.

Part of me feels that I’ve been tricked into celebrating a bunch of repackaged cat toys, but so what? I can play like a cat if I want to. I can write like one, too. I’d follow this up with three paragraphs filled with nothing but the word “meow” if I wasn’t sure that you’d consider it a deal-breaker.

Fortunately, acting like a cat is only fun for about a minute and a half. Let’s move on to the true reason for this entry: It’s time to find out how my “Grow Your Own” Haunted Castle turned out! Yes, it’s already been ten days!

I really shouldn’t have limited my castle’s growth to that empty peach jar, because it turned out to be a pretty incredible little toy. A lot of these “growing things” never live up to the textual hype on their packages, but this one was definitely on the road to victory. Given that it spent ten days trapped in a small, sealed jar, it grew as much as it possibly could. It also somehow turned itself upright, which is either a small miracle or kind of spooky.

I’m tempted to reward my castle for its stellar showing with a properly sized tank and larger amount of holy water…but then I’d have to remove it from the jar, which would feel akin to breaking the glass bottle and pulling the wooden ship out. Just wouldn’t be right. Instead, my new goal is to hatch a Sea-Monkeys in there. While it’s true that the lightweight chemicals used to provide the castle with its magical growing abilities may kill them, I don’t think even PETA bats an eye if you slay a few brine shrimp. It’s not like they have it any better sitting all dehydrated in a foil packet. Shrimps aren’t Kool-Aid.

Finally, we have a pocket-sized Halloween-themed Etch-A-Sketch, a series of hyphenated words that only further proves what I was saying earlier about the new crop of spooky stocking stuffers. Etch-A-Sketches in this exact scale are available at Christmastime as well, only with a red and green color scheme.

I’ve been doing X-Entertainment for nearly ten years, and at one point or another, I’m sure I claimed that I love Etch-A-Sketches. It’s time to come clean: I don’t, and I never have. They’re awful little things. Oh, sure, my complete inability to create even the most basic works of art with an Etch-A-Sketch may play some part in this opinion, but I just don’t see any point in mastering the process when all it would take for someone to destroy my art was a few quick shakes.

I’m out of things to say about all of the above.

So marks the end of WEEK 2 of the Halloween Countdown, and in hindsight, I think the wealth of entries has been a little too fluffy. This is the season for blood and badness. Next week, I’ll cover some stuff that’s a bit more ghoulish. Read at your own risk.

Oh, and this place doesn’t completely die on the weekends. Come back tomorrow to see more of the terrific entries from the “Draw Jason Dancing” art contest, and to maybe watch a few horror movies while commenting on how bad the effects are with other people in other places who are watching the exact same movies. It’s what the Internet is here for. That and this. And this. And that.

Guise: I actually have a figurine set very similar to the one you can view by clicking my name. My set has spooky!Barbara & Adam, Beetlejuice with the spikes, and a sandworm coming out of a dune. I love those toys to pieces. Got them years back when the local Suncoast Motion Pictures was closing.

I love the visuals in Tim Burton’s movies.  I would like to own a prop from one of his movies.

I think I have to start watching some horror movies to get into the spirit of things.  I’m starting to feel Halloweenie, but I’m not quite there yet.  I think I’ll watch The Car and Hellraiser this weekend.  I haven’t watched either of them in a long time.

Cheetara, I had the Beetlejuice with the umbrella/merry-go-round hat, which I loved until he disappeared one fateful day. I also had the Beetlejuice coin-grabbing money box, which was just a skeleton hand that pulled the coin in and had no real link to Beetlejuice.

Ghosted by Guise @ 09/26/2008 2:50 PM EDT

Oh my God. I want a monkey. Too bad I don’t have $8000 to spend on a pet that flings its poo….

Sorry Matt, for today until your next post my only topic of conversation will be monkeys.

Ghosted by Ben @ 09/26/2008 3:02 PM EDT

I need to purchase a couple of monkeys for my next porn production. Nothing is hotter than monkey porn. Be on the lookout for my next release King Schlong. It’s a love story.

Loyalty to Tim Burton led me to watch Sweeney Todd last night, against my better judgement. God DAMN that was a lot of singing.  Sometimes, different characters would be singing different songs, simultaneously!!!  This is like a form of hell for me.  I can not stand musicals in general but even less could I stand to allow a Tim Burton movie to go unwatched. I shall not be purchasing this film on DVD.

Man, that castle looks like a spooky alien insect mouth.

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 09/26/2008 3:55 PM EDT

Rev:  Ah, yes.  My loyalty made me pay 10 bucks to see in a theater.  The gore was fun, but I wish I could have muted it.   What made it worse was that my boyfriend decided to spend the next week singing that “Johanna” song just to torture me.

Ghosted by DarkSideofBrightness @ 09/26/2008 4:00 PM EDT

Cheetara and Gusie: I’m with you on the Beetlejuice toys. I have the Beetlejuice with the umbrella hat and the Vanishing Valut/Grave that I found at a storage facility tag sale. They proudly sat on my nightstand until I had to make way and move them to the bookcase.

Ghosted by Pepe @ 09/26/2008 4:07 PM EDT

and Guise, sorry about the misspelling. My boss came around the corner and scared me.

Ghosted by Pepe @ 09/26/2008 4:08 PM EDT

DC, I think we may need several takes of that banana scene, for some reason the don’t follow orders and eat them!

Pepe, I am envious, madly envious, of your continued Beetlejuice ownership!

Ghosted by Guise @ 09/26/2008 4:12 PM EDT

Pepe: I join Guise in envy over your Beetlejuice toys. They put out a 20th Anniversary “Deluxe” edition of the movie on DVD recently, but apparently the extras suck. I want a making-of feature, dammit!

Rev: Aw, I enjoy musicals (though I am very picky about them). I didn’t like Sweeney Todd enough to buy it, but I feel it was worth the $1 I paid to see it at the cheap-o theater.

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 09/26/2008 4:30 PM EDT

BeetleJuice was great! Does anyone remember the Beetle Juice cartoon series?

Sunday mornings/summer holidays were never the same when they got rid of that :(

Ghosted by Blazer @ 09/26/2008 4:35 PM EDT

I believe I had a Beetlejuice figure, but I definitely had an Adam where his head slid off into a slot on his arm.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/26/2008 4:39 PM EDT

DarkSideOfBrightness,

The Johanna song was the worst of all. And the face of the boy who sang it almost put me off my gin.

I also was not a fan of the Pretty Women harmony.

Ghosted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 09/26/2008 4:47 PM EDT

Cheetara: Somewhere in the depths of my VHS tapes there exists a reel of the old PM magazine “behind the scenes” series on Beetlejuice. It included an exclusive look at the guy who did the puppeteering on the smoker in the waiting room. I’d like to see them put those type of things on the DVDs.  I fully stocked DVD would look great next to my Handbook for the Recently Deceased.

Blazer: I remember that show. I LOVED it. I was worried at first when it came out, but when I saw Beetlejuice’s shoes singing “Day-O” I knew it was love at first sight.

Ghosted by Pepe @ 09/26/2008 4:50 PM EDT

Pepe: I have a Handbook for the Recently Deceased too! (’tis a notebook) When my friend and I found it, we were all disappointed that it wasn’t a real book. And that behind the scenes special sounds righteous.

Did anyone else want to be Lydia when they grew up? I still want a big, floppy black hat with a funeral veil on it.

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 09/26/2008 5:03 PM EDT

Pepe: hahah yeh I remember that! was starting to think I had imagined it all as IMDB have no mention of the cartoon.
My other fav sunday morning cartoon was the back to the future 1.

Ghosted by Blazer @ 09/26/2008 5:26 PM EDT

Speaking of Beetlejuice, I thought about going as Alec Baldwin’s character for Halloween this year.  Does anybody know where I might be able to find the particular (or close enough version of) his black & white plaid shirt that he wears?  Click on my name for a refresher of what it looks like.

I hate etch-a-sketch too.  I hate how you can’t do circles–it drives me crazy!

Ghosted by gingela5 @ 09/26/2008 5:40 PM EDT

REV: I know EXACTLY what you mean about Sweeney Todd! I just could NOT take all the singing. It’s not that I don’t like singing period, it’s that I don’t like it when 97% of a movie is singing.
Beetlejuice has one of the coolest suites EVER!  Also I would like to go to Saturn.

That castle looks like some kind of terrible monster that will bite your hand off if you reach inside. It comes to teeth-like points that are covered in red blood.

The Beetlejuice cartoon is one THE BEST cartoons EVER! I just love the literal pun humor in  that show.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 09/26/2008 8:20 PM EDT

Squee: Doesn’t your DVR box have a USB port on it?  Our DVR box has at least two.  That allows you to buy an external hard drive to expand your space.  We have a 50GB one attached to ours even though it fills up fast.  My best friend fills it up with Star trek enterprise and Stargate Atlantis damn him!!  We should definitely get another one sometime just so things won’t get deleted when new things are recorded.

Lucky Lighter: This isn’t for you exactly but for the group.  I don’t know if you all know this but reruns of Kate and Allie are played on Oxygen.  2 episodes monday through friday from noon til 1.  That show was pretty good.  A lot of the episodes they discuss controversial topics.  My favorite part is the banter at the beginning before the theme song plays.

Blazer:  If you don’t have copies of the Beetlejuice cartoon there are a few complete episodes on youtube.  Just type in Beetlejuice cartoon part 1.  There are at least 5 I think.

I haven’t watched Beetlejuice yet I really should.  I have been mostly catching scary movies on tv and not really planning on watching them.  I meant to find the Halloween music (if they have it yet, I still haven’t looked) channel on cable to listen to while I was making cupcakes but I for some reason had it on TBS and I started watching the Saved by the bell movie where they go to vegas lol!!  That is far from a horror movie, well it depends on who you ask I guess.  I recorded the end I still haven’t watched the rest of it.  BTW if you want to look like you murdered someone bake a red velvet cake sloppily.  It looks like I murdered someone.  Just sayin’

I put that list up to help, most of those movies I haven’t even heard of.  I just was helping Matt and the group figure out what movies were good for movie night.  I think the closer to Halloween the broader the selection is.  I know when I was looking through that list I saw some movies that are going to be playing on Friday and Saturday night next week that look promising.

Cheetara we have a dvr w/ an hdtv and the package we have is a discounted cable tv and cable internet w/ all of the channels.  Without the deluxe package we wouldn’t get VH1 Classic which I think is bullshit but I do watch that channel a lot.  During the nighttime it’s like watching Mtv in the 80’s and early 90’s which is awesome.  I also watch a lot of HBO and Showtime.  Gotta love brief nudity in movies.  But I understand completely and if I had to choose I would choose the internet connection in a heartbeat.  I do youtube movies as a hobby, and I am a part of not only this community but another.  Also pretty much any tv show or movie I can find online.  It’s just nice to sit on the couch and watch live tv.

I missed that when I didn’t have any tv for a few months last year.  One of my favorite shows is Niptuck and I either watched it streaming online or downloaded it off of torrent.  I feel I am an expert now on finding tv shows and movies online.  I even figured out now how to watch them on my tv so that makes me really happy.  I watch it streaming through my wii!  I made a video about it.  So anyway with a fast internet connection and some know how you can watch tv and have your internet.

Everytime the song Thriller plays on the jukebox it reminds me of the article Matt wrote about the bootleg Thriller dolls.  All of the newbies should look that article up!  If I saw those I would buy them up in a heartbeat for myself.  That would be such an awesome Halloween decoration.  Especially because there is a story behind them.  BTW if this post looks screwy don’t blame me :)

Ghosted by Goob @ 09/26/2008 8:29 PM EDT

I love Tim Burton but Sweeney Todd is probably my least favorite of his movies simply because of the incessant singing.  All I could think of while watching it was, “This would be a pretty cool movie if they weren’t singing every 30 seconds.”

Ghosted by Clockwork @ 09/26/2008 8:33 PM EDT

BTW, I finally got The ‘Burbs on dvd.  Not only is it perfect for Halloween season, but it’s one of the most underrated movies ever.

Ghosted by Clockwork @ 09/26/2008 8:36 PM EDT

If you look at the castle upside down, it kind of sort of looks like a vampire octopus skull. Yes, I know that’s random. That’s why I’m on this site.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 09/26/2008 8:38 PM EDT

Goob: Thing is, I can’t afford cable. It came down to having to choose between cable and Internet- easy choice.

Clockwork: I hated Burton’s remakes of both Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I would rather watch Sweeney Todd than either of those piles o’ crap. Then again, I enjoy Annie and Grease…

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 09/26/2008 9:00 PM EDT

What about Sleepy Hollow? That’s a good Tim Burton/Halloween movie. It has no singing and it has Christapher Wahlkens.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 09/26/2008 9:08 PM EDT

I stand corrected – Burton’s Planet of the Apes was God-awful. I only made it halfway through that one.  I thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, although not as good as the original, was pretty good.

Ghosted by Clockwork @ 09/26/2008 9:11 PM EDT

Can’t help you with weekend horror movies. I’d rather be watching musicals.

I like those little fuzzy light-up eye things. Don’t know if I’d buy them myself, but at least they’re kinda cute…and just a little different. They look especially nifty when they’re lit.

And I’m impressed with that castle. None of the little growth things I ever did really grew at all, much less to fill a peach jam jar.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/26/2008 9:18 PM EDT

Clockwork: I’ve got to agree with you, that The ‘Burbs is on underrated movie. I remember showing that movie to friends of mine who just could not understand why I liked it so much.
Any movie where Gremlins cereal has a cameo appearance is aces in my book. In fact, I think any Joe Dante work is underrated.

Ghosted by Pepe @ 09/26/2008 9:29 PM EDT

Cheetara:  I know,  i was just stating my opinion on the internet vs. cable tv topic.  We have come close to cutting off either one and I beg my best friend to turn off tv over the internet if he needs to.  He uses the tv more then the internet.  The DVR alone is 30 dollars a month!  But we don’t need a land line for it to work, we don’t have a land line just cell phones.  He has internet at work so he doesn’t get his money’s worth for himself of the home service.  I emotionally depend on it a lot so I would easily sacrifice the tv over the internet anyday.  I just didn’t notice how much I enjoy live tv until I didn’t have tv for a while.  It felt like I was cut off from the world or something.  Even though I could get news and tv shows online, I felt like I was isolated in a way.  I hope that makes sense.

Oh yeah everybody this morning we went grocery shopping and I got a bargain.  2 for 2.00 WWE RAW attitude energy drink 4 packs.  So I got regular sized cans of energy drink for a quarter a piece.  It’s the cheap stuff but neat nonetheless.  It was on the bargain rack at walmart.  I get energy drinks every once in a while as a treat not on a regular basis.  I know someone online that has liver and stomach problems now because they drank energy drinks everyday for a couple of years.  Lots of things destroy your body, so I am not concerned.  This particular drink tastes like grapefruit which turned me off of it at first but I kind of like it now.

DEAL ALERT

If you don’t already own the Nightmare on Elm Street films and you were just waiting for an excuse to pick them up, Amazon has a heck of a deal where they are selling the complete collection (not including Freddy vs. Jason, of course) for $22.99.  That is like $3 a movie.

I’ve been watching the dancing fish for like 15 minutes straight. Good lord, they’re hypnotic…

Anyone else associate certain video games with particular times of the year?  The Sonic series reminds me of the fall months, so I’m about to go hook up my Genesis.  I got a hankering for the ghoulish yet funky rhythms of Mystic Cave Zone.

And I don’t know if its been resposted this season, but here’s the Dark Chocolate M&Ms find-the-horror-movie-in-the-painting game for anyone looking to get into the Halloween spirit:

My cat would go crazy over those things.

Also, I echo the sentiment about Ech a Sketches.  I could never really make anything but boxes with them and that’s kind of boring really.   I will admin it is pretty impressive when someone actually draws something cool with them though.

…Why is it that everyone’s all up in arms on how OMG INCESSANT SINGING in Sweeney Todd.. which is a STEPHEN SONDHEIM MUSICAL. MUSICAL = INCESSANT SINGING. Even Tim Burton couldn’t have changed that if he were making the MUSICAL into a movie… Sorry, it just had to be said.

Great deal on the Elm Street dvds, BUCKLY. If I didn’t own them already, I would have had to.. Though I got mine for 30 with a 5 dollar target gift card.

And I love Beetlejuice. The cartoon was awesome, but the movie scared me when it first came out.
