My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Hallowonderful.

Oooh, it's in the air. Sort of. I've been trying to avoid Halloween mania, as I have much experience in burning out on it too early. (And longtime readers have often had the chance to see this "burning out" happen in realtime.) Still, it's really, really difficult to shield myself from all things spooky when the material world has already put a bullet in summer and moved onto stuff shaped like vampires. Oh, it's in the air, all right. And latching onto a holiday season is just what the imaginary doctor ordered.

We went to Party City yesterday, for an entirely different purpose that's proven so forgetful that I can only consider it as an ostensible one. In truth, I was really there to check out the burgeoning crop of Halloween crap. They've started building the spooky displays, but it's not quite there yet. Dracula's still battling for shelf space with all of the random summertime party goods. By next week, I expect nothing but Dracula, and I'll ask to speak to the manager if these expectations are not met.

I didn't plan on buying anything just yet, but two items (five if you want to get technical) hopped out at me, silently insinuating their awesomeness with such fervor that I had no choice but to be Party City's first customer of the 2008 Halloween season to charge 8 bucks worth of candy to a credit card.

Wow. It isn't even September yet, and I've already found a contender for best new candy of the '08 season. Wonka's Nerds have been redressed for Halloween before, but never in such a righteous and life-changing way as this. In fact, these things are so amazing that I didn't even realize that they were Nerds until I started taking the pictures. Now that I know, my gold has gravy.

There doesn't seem to be any kind of umbrella title connecting this quartet, but essentially, they're test tube candy containers stuffed with spooky-colored Nerds, each topped with a different monster-themed figural cork. I'm having a hard time reconciling the fact that these weren't around during my childhood, as they feel so incredibly '80s. They're just perfect. The test tube concept is brilliant enough, but by the time you inspect the monstrous corks and the old school spooky fonts drenching the stickers, you start floating. And not in that ghastly, ghostly way. I mean you float like someone who did well in life and was given a halo afterwards floats. That kind of floating.

I found four, and though it's entirely possible that Wonka is offering more, I'm going to assume that this is the complete set. The clear leader of the pack is "Vampire Vaccine," combining Dracula and blood red Nerds to be my all-time favorite thing in the universe. The others are tied for second -- there's "Bat Bite Antidote," "Mummy Makeover" and "Werewolf Morph," and I'm just now realizing that the candies have more than a mere visual theme -- they're actually meant to be potions! Yes!

Protection against vampires, cures for bat bites, tools for werewolf transmogrification, and I guess the last one's intended to help you look like a mummy. Bleh. Even with a rare mummy misfire, these are still amazing.

Not to start any misinformed rumors, but I can't help feeling that these particular Nerds are of a larger variety than the boxed brand. They've also been given a less shiny coating -- I'd almost call it "stonewashed." It's not the kind of thing that every Joe's gonna notice, but these small upgrades (or sidegrades, or lateral grades, whatever you want to call them) really help sell the confections as something special. They definitely ain't just Nerds in a plastic tube. Okay, they are. But still.

I also picked up this random rubber Chucky doll, which would need to be considered an "impulse buy" even if it hadn't been stocked right by the register. As far as a Chucky doll that can be stretched to triple its static height goes, I'm not sure if there was any way to possibly improve on this. Well, I guess they could've decreased the copious amounts of text littering Chucky's ass, but that's a pretty nitpicky thing to say about a Chucky doll that can be contorted to slingshot wasabi peas across the room.

I'm fairly positive that this isn't a new item, as the tag bears a Seed of Chucky logo, and there's really no reason for anyone to put money into the production of Seed of Chucky merchandise at this stage. Whatever. If it's old stock, it's still new to me. Incredibly stretchy, I can now mimic virtually every angle from which Chucky has exploded over the course of his 640,000 films -- most notably the "expanding head" scene from Child's Play 2.

As an added bonus, leaving Chucky's tag on lets him stand upright, which is something he finds quite difficult to do without said tag to serve as some sort of misshapen cane.

I am now thoroughly inspired to throw on Bride of Chucky and suck up 28.3 grams worth of Bat Bite Antidote. I'm a boy of summer.

PS: Spellcheck confirms that I misspelled "brilliant" on the first go-around. Is that irony, or just incidence? I've always wondered. Happy SNT.

Hey, I happened to be checking out YouTube and thought I’d take a shot and see if I can find that Earth Day special I mentioned before. Sure enough, the WHOLE special is on there and guess what? It just so happens to be called, “The Earth Day Special.” I need to correct myself to and mention that the actress playing Danny DeVito’s wife is actually his real wife, Rhea Perlman. Of course, they were using the names Dick and Paula but come on, you know who they are in real life! Oh yeah, I can’t tell how weird it is watching Rhea Perlman not want to punch her husband’s lights out. Sorry, but I can’t see her in any other role other than vicious Carla Tortelli from Cheers.

I only got through one part and it ends with Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Tweety saying, “I taught I taw a Meryl Tweep!” Oh yes, and according to the credits, the cast of Cheers is featured as well as Married With Children and The Cosby Show. Wouldn’t it be something if Rhea Perlman appeared as Danny DeVito’s wife Paula and as Carla? I’ve only seen this special once so I forgot who was featured in the Cheers segment.

Oh, and here’s the link so you all can check it out as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ6HKG8R488 This should also prove to you all that I indeed was telling the truth.

DarkSide: You know what I find even funnier than those Goofy “How To” shorts? Tex Avery’s “Tomorrow” cartoons are absolutely HILARIOUS! When you mentioned the new model cars I immediately thought “The Car of Tomorrow.” I think that’s the funniest of them all, and “House of Tomorrow” is great as well. The other two, “Farm of Tomorrow” and “TV of Tomorrow” are just as great. Of course, what do you expect, it’s Tex Avery, a comic timing genius! Anyway, here’s one of the links to the “Farm of Tomorrow” segment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqX9w-0WEQ0

Anyway, that’s all for me. Sorry to have disrupted the surveys. Just thought I’d come out and share what I discovered.

Hmm, the Earth Day special didn’t link when I clicked it. Oh well, just type in “Earth Day Special” in the Search box and it’ll come up!

Mandy “Finger of Death” Reeves
Looks like you hit actor Jerry Reed (think truck driver in Smokey and the Bandit) as you pointed around Hollywood…

BJ Those are great cartoons too! I am a huge Tex Avery fan! Thanks for the link. I had just ran out of stuff to keep me busy at work, so that came at the perfect time! I’ll be over on YouTube, watching Tex Avery shorts.

Wow, Happy Halloween. I just bought some pumpkin ice cream and am fully in the mood.

Chestnuts roasted by Fox @ 09/02/2008 4:20 PM

I hope I can actually find that pumpkin ice cream this year. I looked everywhere for it last year and could never find it.

Goob, I had a dream that Mystie approved my friend request. But, alas, it has yet to come to fruition.

Jerry Reed’s dead…sad day. Amos Moses and East Bound and Down are two of the greatest songs ever.

am i too late?

1) the troll from cat’s eye is lame
2) the cartoon where mickey, donald and goofy go camping in the camper is the best ever.

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 09/02/2008 9:49 PM

FUCK YES to the Disney Camper toon. I looooved that one. From Goofy’s trouble with the corn to the fact that they all had customized cabins.

Will it let me post now?

didn’t we all accidentally kill a famous person last year? I forget who. There was a survey about it after the fact…when I told how my family accidentally killed John Denver by talking about him.

Chestnuts roasted by mandy_Reeves @ 09/02/2008 10:23 PM

Amy and Matt: The cartoon is called “Mickey’s Trailer.” Sorry, I’m one of those history buffs when it comes to a topic I like, and I love Disney so I’m all into its history.

Actually, two other very good classic Disney cartoons starring the trio of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are “Clock Cleaners” where they’re trying to clean this big old clock tower and the other one is, “Lonesome Ghosts.” That’s where the trio is running a Ghost Exterminating Business and these ghosts at a haunted house call them up because they’re bored and they have no one to haunt. I don’t know but could this have been an early inspiration to “Ghostbusters?” Just a thought.

Chestnuts roasted by BJ @ 09/02/2008 10:26 PM

thanks bj, giving me the title helped me find one on youtube without weird foreign dubbing or subtitles. clicky clicky to watch the best cartoon ever. this thing is 70 years old and still amazingly cute.

Chestnuts roasted by Amy @ 09/02/2008 11:19 PM

oh, that ghost one is awesome too, bj.

Hey all, I updated my blog to talk about my September to October rituals from childhood in the early to mid 80s. Read of my dissatisfaction with modern life, and my loathing of climate change.

And, um, I have no answers for the survey, I came with a license to shill.

Chestnuts roasted by Terror Claws @ 09/02/2008 11:25 PM

Amy: I’m lucky, I have the Treasures Collection, “Mickey Mouse in Living Color” DVD set and all three of those cartoons are on it. I was going through it to try to find the title of the Ghosts cartoon because I couldn’t remember it off the top of my hand.

Actually, I was watching that Earth Day Special on Youtube as well as many of those Tex Avery cartoons I found earlier. There was one I was having trouble finding that is one of my all-time favorites. I couldn’t remember the title so I was going through the whole list of cartoons they had posted and I found a scene that I recognized but no title. I started watching it and found it was dubbed but they did show the title card so I typed it in the Search box and next thing I know, I see the cartoon listed in English so I immediately click on it.

In case you’re wondering, the cartoon is called “Symphony in Slang.” This guy gets to heaven and starts talking to these two angels in slang. The angels are trying to think what he is trying to saying and they think of what he’s saying it literal. For instance, he starts by saying that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth so they picture him as a baby and silver spoon is in his mouth. Then he says, “I seem to have grown up over night” so they picture him as a baby and in an instant, he grows into an adult! There are so many more funny puns such as he says he was outside and it was raining cats and dogs and literally cats and dogs are falling from the sky, or he says he hopped a Greyhound and he’s on a dog’s back, and of course, the climax was he said he died laughing and wouldn’t you know it, that’s how he got to heaven! All I can tell you is this is one of the CLASSICS and if you’re a fan of old-school cartoons, Tex Avery, or just need a good laugh, this is the one cartoon I have to HIGHLY recommend you seeing before ANYTHING else!

My name is Travis and I like beer, its good for you.

That should be McCain’s slogan, Travis.

BJ, I love that toon. I absolutely love “The Cat Got Her Tongue” and the callback at the end.

Sorry for the double post but I must mention this other cartoon that made me laugh so hard it left me in stitches. In fact, I was laughing to the point where I was crying! What cartoon could possibly have this much of an effect on me? Well, it’s just so happens to be a Tex Avery cartoon (who else?) entitled “Rock-a-
Bye Bear.” In it, Spike the dog (the one that was popular in the Droopy cartoons, not the nemesis of Tom and Jerry who also had a young son named Tyke) is hired to watch a house that is owned by a bear who’s trying to hibernate for the winter. What was so funny was the way the bear was talking, or I should say talking, more like yelling. He kept yelling, “QUIET! QUIET! I NEED QUIET! IF THERE’S ONE THING I CAN’T STAND, IT’S NOISE!!!!” What was probably the best moment through the whole thing was when the bear goes to sleep, and of course he doesn’t just walk to his bed (which is actually a cave) quietly, he’s stomping on the floor being as loud as he can! He closes his bedroom door, or should I say he SLAMS his door, jumps into his bedlike cave and does some really fast snoring, gets up out of his bed and stomps across his bedroom, opens the door and yells out to Spike, “GOOD NIGHT!!!” and SLAMS the door again! My God, I’m making myself laugh just typing this stuff out and thinking about the scene!

Anyway, I guess I can now officially claim that any cartoon I say you have to check out is hereby considered “BJ Recommended!” If that’s the case than practically ANYTHING done by Tex Avery HAS to be seen! There’s so many titles I won’t go through them all but just tell you that they’re worth seeing, especially the “Tomorrow” cartoons and Droopy is also VERY funny! Hey, it’s not just MGM that Tex Avery is famous for. You all do know he did make the very first Bugs Bunny cartoon, “A Wild Hare” for Warner Brothers before he went on to MGM, don’t you? Well, he’s done a lot of great stuff for Warner Brothers too so those cartoons are also worth seeing as well. Also, see if you can hunt down some of the old black and white Popeye cartoons done by the Fleishers in the 1930s. The early ones are EXTREMELY well done and very funny!

Okay, I don’t want to turn into an Animated Historian so I’m going to stop. It’s late anyway and I am pretty tired. So, guess I’ll be back tomorrow so I hope you all have a crazy, Looney Tooney, Tex Avery filled night!

Chestnuts roasted by BJ @ 09/02/2008 11:54 PM

God I’m tired from writing my latest blog entry. It took forever. You’ll see why when/if you read it.

Anyways, I have no idea what you guys are talking about now, but from waht I read 19 seconds ago, it’s something about Mickie Mouse and Goofy.
I remember that Goofy cartoon in the theater in Who Framed Roger Rabbit…the one where he’s trying to exercise. It looked funny.
