You are all doomed. Why not surrender? We might let you live.

08/30/2008: Hallowonderful.

Oooh, it’s in the air. Sort of. I’ve been trying to avoid Halloween mania, as I have much experience in burning out on it too early. (And longtime readers have often had the chance to see this “burning out” happen in realtime.) Still, it’s really, really difficult to shield myself from all things spooky when the material world has already put a bullet in summer and moved onto stuff shaped like vampires. Oh, it’s in the air, all right. And latching onto a holiday season is just what the imaginary doctor ordered.

We went to Party City yesterday, for an entirely different purpose that’s proven so forgetful that I can only consider it as an ostensible one. In truth, I was really there to check out the burgeoning crop of Halloween crap. They’ve started building the spooky displays, but it’s not quite there yet. Dracula’s still battling for shelf space with all of the random summertime party goods. By next week, I expect nothing but Dracula, and I’ll ask to speak to the manager if these expectations are not met.

I didn’t plan on buying anything just yet, but two items (five if you want to get technical) hopped out at me, silently insinuating their awesomeness with such fervor that I had no choice but to be Party City’s first customer of the 2008 Halloween season to charge 8 bucks worth of candy to a credit card.

Wow. It isn’t even September yet, and I’ve already found a contender for best new candy of the ‘08 season. Wonka’s Nerds have been redressed for Halloween before, but never in such a righteous and life-changing way as this. In fact, these things are so amazing that I didn’t even realize that they were Nerds until I started taking the pictures. Now that I know, my gold has gravy.

There doesn’t seem to be any kind of umbrella title connecting this quartet, but essentially, they’re test tube candy containers stuffed with spooky-colored Nerds, each topped with a different monster-themed figural cork. I’m having a hard time reconciling the fact that these weren’t around during my childhood, as they feel so incredibly ’80s. They’re just perfect. The test tube concept is brilliant enough, but by the time you inspect the monstrous corks and the old school spooky fonts drenching the stickers, you start floating. And not in that ghastly, ghostly way. I mean you float like someone who did well in life and was given a halo afterwards floats. That kind of floating.

I found four, and though it’s entirely possible that Wonka is offering more, I’m going to assume that this is the complete set. The clear leader of the pack is “Vampire Vaccine,” combining Dracula and blood red Nerds to be my all-time favorite thing in the universe. The others are tied for second — there’s “Bat Bite Antidote,” “Mummy Makeover” and “Werewolf Morph,” and I’m just now realizing that the candies have more than a mere visual theme — they’re actually meant to be potions! Yes!

Protection against vampires, cures for bat bites, tools for werewolf transmogrification, and I guess the last one’s intended to help you look like a mummy. Bleh. Even with a rare mummy misfire, these are still amazing.

Not to start any misinformed rumors, but I can’t help feeling that these particular Nerds are of a larger variety than the boxed brand. They’ve also been given a less shiny coating — I’d almost call it “stonewashed.” It’s not the kind of thing that every Joe’s gonna notice, but these small upgrades (or sidegrades, or lateral grades, whatever you want to call them) really help sell the confections as something special. They definitely ain’t just Nerds in a plastic tube. Okay, they are. But still.

I also picked up this random rubber Chucky doll, which would need to be considered an “impulse buy” even if it hadn’t been stocked right by the register. As far as a Chucky doll that can be stretched to triple its static height goes, I’m not sure if there was any way to possibly improve on this. Well, I guess they could’ve decreased the copious amounts of text littering Chucky’s ass, but that’s a pretty nitpicky thing to say about a Chucky doll that can be contorted to slingshot wasabi peas across the room.

I’m fairly positive that this isn’t a new item, as the tag bears a Seed of Chucky logo, and there’s really no reason for anyone to put money into the production of Seed of Chucky merchandise at this stage. Whatever. If it’s old stock, it’s still new to me. Incredibly stretchy, I can now mimic virtually every angle from which Chucky has exploded over the course of his 640,000 films — most notably the “expanding head” scene from Child’s Play 2.

As an added bonus, leaving Chucky’s tag on lets him stand upright, which is something he finds quite difficult to do without said tag to serve as some sort of misshapen cane.

I am now thoroughly inspired to throw on Bride of Chucky and suck up 28.3 grams worth of Bat Bite Antidote. I’m a boy of summer.

PS: Spellcheck confirms that I misspelled “brilliant” on the first go-around. Is that irony, or just incidence? I’ve always wondered. Happy SNT.

NO, Halloween-ify away!

Mrs. Manimal is getting on to me all weekend for trying to bust out the Halloween stuff from the garage and closet (and wherever else). I too am trying to fight it but…I can see the SIMPSONS Halloween figures watching the MDA Telethon with me shortly.
Our local TARGET is teasing us with Halloween candy and baby clothes.

I say the logo’s already halfway Halloweenified by the “Dracula’s Castle” ticket. It wouldn’t hurt to spook it up a bit more…

Manimal and Faith, yes! :) Hi!

Ghosted by Matt @ 08/31/2008 12:04 AM EDT

yay!!! My hubby just got me some Ben and Jerry’s strawberry cheesecake ice cream! woo!

Oh… I have sneakers too, and I have to get my ugg boots for fall as well.

Oh my…I am committing footwear faux pa’s all over the place!

Speaking of which, anyone see that Reebok brought back their velcro hightops? In a vast rainbow of colors no less! Oh my…I can see my paychecks dwindling away.

We are moving up in the world, people.

Yeah! We went to Walgreens and loaded up today, too. Orange marshmallow pumpkins, candy corn, vulture eggs, and popcorn balls. One cool thing we saw was “Bag of Blood” which was this little plastic pack filled with red syrup candy and it had a little iv drip attached. Pretty cool! It’s definitely in the air now. :D

Hi yourself, Chief. Sorry I have been a bad blog pal lately. 2 kids, school is back in session, blah blah.
On the plus side, (I went back and forth on announcing this but what the hey) I did win Teacher of the County last month. Quite the honor and surprise to be sure.

Back to Halloween coverage:

Walgreens is hardcore with the holiday stuff. Well, the one we have here is, at least. It’s been one of my favorite stops over the past few years.

S’coo, Manimal, and grats on the award!

I must say, I’m not feeling particularly Halloweeny yet. It’s been very hot here in L.A., hotter than it’s been in a while. Maybe it’ll start next Tuesday when school starts, that’s when fall always seemed to start to me. Then again, Halloween is usually pretty dead (no pun intended) around here. That doesn’t stop the grocery store down the street from my house from putting a ton of Halloween candy on sale, which is just fine for me.

I owe all of my success to God, X-E, Grimace, Stripe, and my family (in that order).

I was watching part of that new horror movie “mirrors” just now. I found a couple places that have it to watch. I usually go to the movies I want to see, but this was up in the air due to gore factor and lack of money to spend on frivolities.

The first 2 minutes of the film are an eye opener. Like the first opening scene. NOT for the squemish. I’m too tired tonight to follow the plot. 5 minutes in and I’m already confused.

Oh man I LUV Halloween! I’ve been stalking Walmart here for a few weeks now hoping their “Game Time” theme (put up for the Olympics, and ousting the Back to School stuff a few weeks early) for the “seasonal section” to change into Halloween stuff. I’ve already started doodling bats, witches and wizard cats to festoon my hallway.

My daughter wanted to be Tinkerbell for Halloween and they had these more upscale “dress up costumes” in the toy section, and lo and behold there was a Tinkerbell one… so she’s already got it (yeah I’m dying for some Halloween stuff here) and I picked up Patricia Brigg’s Alpha and Omega book (its about werewolves)…. so that was the best I could do with a Walmart still resistant to fall changes.

I hope they have some good stuff this year.

Never been a fan of Chuckie, but those Nerds look totally awesome (and then some).

Ghosted by kittygirl @ 08/31/2008 12:35 AM EDT

I can’t be the only one who first thought that the vampire nerds figure was Michael Myers, can I?

I also thought at first the tag on the Chucky doll was some sort of briefcase for him which would have been 6 shades of cooler.

Ghosted by Wenthral @ 08/31/2008 12:48 AM EDT

Did anyone notice the pro-werewolf/anti-vampire theme going on with the Nerds candies? Curious…

I think it’s the whole: “Were-wolf is not a bad guy, he can’t help it and if he is a teenage werewolf hilarity will enusue versus Vampire which is evil because he is after something and even the teenage ones are bad a la the LOST BOYS.”
OR
In animal terms, a mean dog is still snugglier than a bat of any denomination.

Yes! A new blog entry from Matt! I knew you’d have one just in time for my birthday. It’s just the thing I need to get my mind off of this damn hurricane heading my way. I’ll more than likely be searching for some Vampire Vaccine on thr road during our evacuation…that shit looks tasty!

TWO THINGS TONGIHT:
1. I saw a real live garbage pail kid sticker while riding the 1 line subway uptown in Manhattan. It was affixed upon one those many ads the MTA is paid to put up. (I even see ads for the once-famous Dr. Zizzmor- THANK YOU, Dr. Zizzmor.) So that made my week, but then I got to thinking – maybe it’s a sign. A sign of what? I’m not sure. Are there any psychics out there reading this that can help me? What does this sign mean?

2. Second thing is that I’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo of Wart, the final boss on Super Mario Bro.’s 2, on my leg. I wanted something old-time geeky (video games, tv, comic books, toys etc.) but not something too recognizable like Optimus is after Bay made that shit move. Does anyone think this is a good idea? Any other suggestions of what to tattoo? Has anyone else done something like that before? How did it go? If you don’t want to post your tattoo pics you can e-mail them to me at clawful@gmail.com. When anyone asks what is that on my leg, I can say that its a Wart. (That seemed funnier in my head.) THANK YOU FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE WORLD’s BEST INTERNETS SITE.

Great to have a new article – Hulk Man and co. were starting to invade my subconcious.

Anyway, as I think I’ve said in previous years, Halloween seems to be a much bigger deal Stateside than here in the UK. Here, shops (that ’stores’ in Americee) might stock up on a few generic ‘Halloween’ candy packs a couple of weeks before October 31st, complete with generic Halloween clip-art on the packaging et al, but little if anything in the shape of those cool Nerds test tubes and the like. Which sucks, cos I could really go a fix of Bat Bite Antidote!

Then again, maybe I’m just visiting the wrong shops. Come to think of it, I seldom visit ANY shops!! That’s the internet cosumer age for you.

Can we add, “A Blog post from BJ” as something new and exciting? Of course I could be a little disappointed that Goob did not mention me in her shout-out video blog. It’s okay, when you don’t post in forever on a famous site you are famous for posting, you can become quite forgotten very quickly.

It’s funny how people are starting to see signs of Halloween stuff popping up little by little. I saw something last week that I had to force myself not to buy because I had a tight budget. I saw a jigsaw depicting the famous scene from “Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” in which Snoopy’s sillouette rises above the patch and Linus is about to shit himself because he thinks he sees the Great Pumpkin himself! I’m not big into jugsaw puzzles, and if I ever buy it, would I try to put it together, and would I have it finished before Halloween? I keep telling myself how much I need to write in my blog on my MySpace page. Perhaps this puzzle will give me that inspiration.

Teddy Ray: I sent a Friend Request to your MySpace page in case you haven’t checked your site yet.

Anyway, in case anyone has wondered about my whereabouts, the irony is that most of the time I have been in my room. I tend to get into those, “I don’t feel like writing anything” type of funks. Usually if I haven’t joined in a thread on here and over a hundred or so posts have already been posted and I KNOW I won’t have enough in me to go through all the posts before I post mine, I wait until the next blog is posted before I join in. Of course, this means that it has been at least three weeks since I posted on here. Actually, I can’t even remember the last blog I posted on.

Anyway, trying to decide if whether or not I want to see a movie today since my original plans are being changed. I thought about “Traitor” but I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about “Tropic Thunder.” Actually, I think that since I have today off and tomorrow, why not see both? Kind of a good idea, don’t you think?

Oh yeah, I rented a couple movies from Blockbuster yesterday, something I haven’t done in months either. Finally saw “Smart People” which I have for some reason wanted to see. Might be my sudden desire to want to watch movies with Dennis Quaid in it. I guess after seeing “The Rookie” several times and “Vantage Point” earlier this year, I guess Dennis Quaid is rubbing off on me. Surprised Forrest Whitaker hasn’t given me that same effect. Oh wait, yes he has, forgot “The Great Debaters” (oops, here comes Denzel Washington now).

I do want to also say that “Smart People” was one of those movies where you think the movie could have gotten away with a less harsh rating if it wasn’t for the F word being used quite a few times by that foul-mouthed little “girl” (I had it so in my mind to say the “b” word but I just couldn’t bear myself to because it’s such a harsh word for me to say) from Juno, Ellen Page. I can’t tell you how many movies I’ve seen where the rating could have been lower had it not been for a word or a scene that was not needed. I’m not going to go into which ones specifically because I’m in my “rambling” mode and need to draw this to a close very soon.

Anyway, that’s pretty much all I have for right now. Will it be another three weeks + before you hear from me again? I don’t know, I hope not. I need to get myself out of my funks. Of course, I’m sure half of you are practically about to yell at me, “When you going to write a damn blog entry?” Soon…I hope!

@Cameron T.: Super Walmart had mellocreme pumpkins yesterday (at least in Jacksonville, FL). They were in the huge office size boxes too, and on sale along with candy corn.

Ghosted by Another Matt @ 08/31/2008 12:16 PM EDT

Candy corn? Bleh. :(

Little known fact: every year’s selection of candy corn comes from a gigantic intial batch produced in 1947. As it’s not meant to be edible, the shelf life of candy corn is indefinite.

No! Not Halloween already! Man…it’s the only time I really feel out of place on this site because I love summer, fall is my least favorite season, and I hate Halloween. As I’ve said (probably every year since I’ve been posting here), I was never allowed to celebrate it as a kid, I have no kids to celebrate it with now, and I’m convinced you need to have some sort of childhood connection to enjoy it in adulthood. If you don’t, it’s just the holiday where you buy candy for other people’s ungrateful kids and get made to feel like a grinch for not being psyched about it. It’s not even that I don’t have good memories of childhood Halloweens, it’s that I have very bitter memories (it was like every kid in the country being invited to a party except you), which has tainted the whole thing for me, probably beyond repair. I tried to get a Halloween mojo the first couple of years I was an XE-er, but I had nothing to add to the blog posts, and found that passing out candy really wasn’t as much fun as I’d hoped. Enjoy your holiday, Halloween-lovers! I’ll probably be in the shadows until November. :(

Ghosted by LoneStar76 @ 08/31/2008 2:46 PM EDT

Lonestar: You could make a case that Frankie is the lamest of the A-List monsters. After all, other than Van Helsing, he hasn’t been in a movie since the early 90s while vampires, werewolves, zombies, and mummies have been in multiple movies.

BTW, this is how I undertand the monster hierarchy:

A-List-Vampires, Mummy, Frankenstein, Werewolves, Zombies. Maybe witches belong here, too.

B-List or lower- DR Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Invisible Man, Black Lagoon Creature.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 08/31/2008 2:59 PM EDT

JLAJRC: Frankenstein bad.

Matt also bought a “Ghost” themed cork/test tube of Nerds but you can’t see it unless you take a picture. In the developed picture, the Ghost may be mistaken for moisture on the lens but I promise it’s there.
