You are all doomed. Why not surrender? We might let you live.

08/30/2008: Hallowonderful.

Oooh, it’s in the air. Sort of. I’ve been trying to avoid Halloween mania, as I have much experience in burning out on it too early. (And longtime readers have often had the chance to see this “burning out” happen in realtime.) Still, it’s really, really difficult to shield myself from all things spooky when the material world has already put a bullet in summer and moved onto stuff shaped like vampires. Oh, it’s in the air, all right. And latching onto a holiday season is just what the imaginary doctor ordered.

We went to Party City yesterday, for an entirely different purpose that’s proven so forgetful that I can only consider it as an ostensible one. In truth, I was really there to check out the burgeoning crop of Halloween crap. They’ve started building the spooky displays, but it’s not quite there yet. Dracula’s still battling for shelf space with all of the random summertime party goods. By next week, I expect nothing but Dracula, and I’ll ask to speak to the manager if these expectations are not met.

I didn’t plan on buying anything just yet, but two items (five if you want to get technical) hopped out at me, silently insinuating their awesomeness with such fervor that I had no choice but to be Party City’s first customer of the 2008 Halloween season to charge 8 bucks worth of candy to a credit card.

Wow. It isn’t even September yet, and I’ve already found a contender for best new candy of the ‘08 season. Wonka’s Nerds have been redressed for Halloween before, but never in such a righteous and life-changing way as this. In fact, these things are so amazing that I didn’t even realize that they were Nerds until I started taking the pictures. Now that I know, my gold has gravy.

There doesn’t seem to be any kind of umbrella title connecting this quartet, but essentially, they’re test tube candy containers stuffed with spooky-colored Nerds, each topped with a different monster-themed figural cork. I’m having a hard time reconciling the fact that these weren’t around during my childhood, as they feel so incredibly ’80s. They’re just perfect. The test tube concept is brilliant enough, but by the time you inspect the monstrous corks and the old school spooky fonts drenching the stickers, you start floating. And not in that ghastly, ghostly way. I mean you float like someone who did well in life and was given a halo afterwards floats. That kind of floating.

I found four, and though it’s entirely possible that Wonka is offering more, I’m going to assume that this is the complete set. The clear leader of the pack is “Vampire Vaccine,” combining Dracula and blood red Nerds to be my all-time favorite thing in the universe. The others are tied for second — there’s “Bat Bite Antidote,” “Mummy Makeover” and “Werewolf Morph,” and I’m just now realizing that the candies have more than a mere visual theme — they’re actually meant to be potions! Yes!

Protection against vampires, cures for bat bites, tools for werewolf transmogrification, and I guess the last one’s intended to help you look like a mummy. Bleh. Even with a rare mummy misfire, these are still amazing.

Not to start any misinformed rumors, but I can’t help feeling that these particular Nerds are of a larger variety than the boxed brand. They’ve also been given a less shiny coating — I’d almost call it “stonewashed.” It’s not the kind of thing that every Joe’s gonna notice, but these small upgrades (or sidegrades, or lateral grades, whatever you want to call them) really help sell the confections as something special. They definitely ain’t just Nerds in a plastic tube. Okay, they are. But still.

I also picked up this random rubber Chucky doll, which would need to be considered an “impulse buy” even if it hadn’t been stocked right by the register. As far as a Chucky doll that can be stretched to triple its static height goes, I’m not sure if there was any way to possibly improve on this. Well, I guess they could’ve decreased the copious amounts of text littering Chucky’s ass, but that’s a pretty nitpicky thing to say about a Chucky doll that can be contorted to slingshot wasabi peas across the room.

I’m fairly positive that this isn’t a new item, as the tag bears a Seed of Chucky logo, and there’s really no reason for anyone to put money into the production of Seed of Chucky merchandise at this stage. Whatever. If it’s old stock, it’s still new to me. Incredibly stretchy, I can now mimic virtually every angle from which Chucky has exploded over the course of his 640,000 films — most notably the “expanding head” scene from Child’s Play 2.

As an added bonus, leaving Chucky’s tag on lets him stand upright, which is something he finds quite difficult to do without said tag to serve as some sort of misshapen cane.

I am now thoroughly inspired to throw on Bride of Chucky and suck up 28.3 grams worth of Bat Bite Antidote. I’m a boy of summer.

PS: Spellcheck confirms that I misspelled “brilliant” on the first go-around. Is that irony, or just incidence? I’ve always wondered. Happy SNT.

The best part of time of the year is when you start seeing Halloween merchandise slowly being introduced just like you said. It means 2 very important things 1. Dracula Kit Kats are just around the corner and 2. Christmas Blowout 2008 is even closer!!!!!

First?

Ah, a Chucky Maraton. Halloween can’t get here soon enough. :D

Holy cow! It really is a Halloween miracle! Only kidding….

Happy SNT everyone!

Woo Hoo!!! SNT!!! Glad to have you back Matt! I’m gonna have to keep an eye out for these things! I love Nerds and Halloween themed Nerds are a 1000X better! I’m ready for Halloween too, especially the cooler weather!

Ghosted by Dan @ 08/30/2008 7:46 PM EDT

Man, those nerds packs are just too perfect- I should have come op with those. If they don’t have a Frankenstein or Jeckyll/Hyde version I need to get on that…

I can’t say I’m bothered by premature Halloween spirit, I’ve even noticed the leaves on some trees have already changed, but I do wish summer could hang around a bit longer.

I am so sorry to say goodbye to Hulk’s third asscheek. It has helped me get through the past almost three weeks. It would be nice if the Hulk Butt would make guest appearances in future blog posts, but I won’t hold my breath.

Its a nice surprise to not only get a new entry, but a Halloween entry at that. Halloween is my favorite holiday next to Christmas. I just wish my mother would have waited two hours to give birth to me so my birthday would’ve fallen on Halloween. I guess being born on Hell night is interesting too though.

Ghosted by Jack @ 08/30/2008 8:21 PM EDT

Top 10!! Those nerds are on my shopping list now.

Ghosted by DrummerJay @ 08/30/2008 8:27 PM EDT

It doesn’t really feel like fall to me yet but I got into the halloween spirit today when I found a plush jack o’lantern randomly placed among some boring stuffed animals. Needless to say, I bought it.

Ghosted by Kapprika @ 08/30/2008 8:32 PM EDT

Gotta love the tag on Chucky that details it as “life-like.” Pretty gutsy for a character that was essentially a My Buddy doll brought to life.

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 08/30/2008 8:35 PM EDT

The kickoff of college football season and a Halloween themed entry…this is truly a magnificent day.

Happy SNT!

Love Nerds, love Halloween, love getting in the spirit even this early. It’s practically September anyway :D

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 08/30/2008 8:48 PM EDT

Sweet. No more hulk-ass.

Ok, I feel like a loser, since I’ve only recently started reading the blog comments and everything, but could someone fill me in on SNT?

Ghosted by Brad @ 08/30/2008 8:50 PM EDT

Welcome back Matt! I too am gearing up for the season. Given that I’ve been sick for the past week, cooped up in a very air-conditioned house, every time I step outside I’m surprised to find out that the temperature is not in the 50s and that the leaves are still on the trees and I still have to mow the lawn.

Check out Michaels when you have a chance. The Halloween-themed stuff started coming out about a month ago, and there’s some quality merchandise. I like the animated displays, but there’s something weird about Christmas houses moving into Halloween territory. Be on the lookout for a giant “stone” bust that looks remarkably like Vincent Price. I need one of those for my mantle, pronto. The two-faced Medusa isn’t bad either.

I will be celebrating almost-September tonight by watching the television cut of Halloween. I’ve never seen the extended version before and lucked out on finding a used copy of the 1999 limited-edition dvd on Amazon for just under $15. Not bad, considering most merchants online have copies anywhere from $25 to $100 for the out-of-print set.

Happy SNT everyone!

Oh those are awesome! Glad to have you back Matt! I’m having to hold myself back from buying anything Halloweeny until at least mid-September!

Brad: Saturday Night Thread.

I don’t think the “Mummy Makeover” is intended to make one look like a mummy, but rather transform a mummy into their pre-mummification state. That makes much more sense, Matt.

Ghosted by Saira Bee @ 08/30/2008 9:02 PM EDT

Wow. I really want some of those Nerds.

I find it amusing that we’re getting a Halloween article with Santa smilies at the bottom.

I created a new myspace just for my X-E peeps. I’ve already sent friend requests to a lot of you. Click my name to see it (not much to it right now) or post your myspace address and I’ll send you a FR.

When I saw that AMC was playing a couple of the Halloween movies last night I knew that summer was pretty much over. In addition, Jeepers Creepers was on late night. I had never seen it before and it was truly one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen.

Ghosted by Clockwork @ 08/30/2008 9:07 PM EDT

@Clockwork:

Really? You didn’t like Jeepers Creepers? I didn’t care for the sequel but absolutely adore the original. It harked back to an era when special effects weren’t used in lieu of storytelling.

It’s still one of my favorites.

Ghosted by mysteryd8 @ 08/30/2008 9:10 PM EDT

The movie started out promising when you weren’t quite sure who or what the mysterious cloaked figure was, but when you find out it’s a vampire he kind of loses some of his cache which made the last third of the movie pretty boring. Also, I can’t stand the horror movie cliche when the protagonists blatantly put themselves in dangerous positions like they did in this movie.

…The werewolf cork looks more like a Saint Bernanrd than an actual werewolf.

Ghosted by Clockwork @ 08/30/2008 9:16 PM EDT

Happy SNT people! Wow, glad to see a new article.

Ghosted by Saint @ 08/30/2008 9:21 PM EDT

Me too…Hulk’s ass was nice and all, but I started wishing for a superheroine.

Ghosted by meepy @ 08/30/2008 9:25 PM EDT

The vampire kinda looks like Michael Myers.

Ghosted by meepy @ 08/30/2008 9:26 PM EDT

God, my teeth hurt just looking at all of those Nerds! In a good way, of course.

Ghosted by Amy @ 08/30/2008 9:35 PM EDT

hoooraaayyy! SNT!!! I went to the mall and got a pair of the imitation crocs sandles at payless…left my bag by accident on a chair by the foodcourt for 3 min…some fucker came and stole my shoes!

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 08/30/2008 9:37 PM EDT

Oh dear lovely! I was in CVS today, and the school supplies are already gone, pumpkin candles and cornucopia welcome door mats are in their place.

It’s almost Spetember! Here, in MN, the leaves are at “peak color” in just about three weeks, which is hard to believe since it was in the upper 80s this afternoon. I am so excited.

Ghosted by kb @ 08/30/2008 9:57 PM EDT

Rev BIOU-
ALWAYS hold your breath when Hulk’s bare ass is out!

Mandy-
That guy did you a favor. Crocs are proof that the devil is real and thriving.

Whoo! SNT!

Has anyone seen Brach’s Mellocreme Pumpkins out yet? I love those things and will buy a ton when they come out…

I’m not really much one for Halloween but this year they screening Rocky Horror at the local theatre…I’ve never been to a live show, so looking forward to that…

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 08/30/2008 10:04 PM EDT

Mandy: I believe it was the fashion police that took your crocs. They are a plague upon this country. Haha.

Ghosted by Clockwork @ 08/30/2008 10:09 PM EDT

I’ve been purposefully avoiding Party City due to the fact that the change over always gets me down-faded dreams of sports teams that went no where this summer, St. Patrick Day clearance items still hanging on and the allure of pinatas is just too much. However, knowing the transition to Halloween is nearly complete makes a trip there all but inevitable.
Also, I got my Fright Catalog…catalog in the mail this past Tuesday. Life is good.

Ghosted by Pepe @ 08/30/2008 10:10 PM EDT

nice , i love the Nerds they are really cool i may have to hit up the Party City down the road. I tried to go to the Spirit Halloween store today that was supposed to open last week ( so says the flier on the door and all around the neighborhood ) , but when we got there they are still putting up the racks and no product ..i need some stuff to finish up my Renn Fest costume but Spirit let me down … where have all the Halloween Adventures gone , they were always open the first week of August :(

@KB:

There are CVS pharmacies in Minnesota now? Interesting. When I moved to Tennessee from Minneapolis in 2001 I couldn’t find a Walgreens to save my life. Now they seem to be split evenly.

Matt,

welcome back, nice to see your new blog entry! i love the halloween staff, i actally acquired the nerds at the local dollar store a few days ago, awesome. love the halloween stuff matt but please don’t burn out yet. we have a long way to go.

Happy SNT ya’ll! A new entry that’s Halloween? Oh happy night! I gotta get me some of them nerds. Also I liked both Jeepers Creepers flicks.

I hate the back to school – Halloween transition. It always comes to soon. :(
Those vampire vaccine nerds are looking pretty delicious right about now.

I’m starting to write halloween articles I want to have a halloween countdown ready by next year. I also plan on doing a mix each year available for download. And It’s all thanks to Matt for inspiring me with this site. The link is my brand new blog enjoy

Hey I have a box of nerds in my pantry! Does anyone want to go halfsies with me? Anyone want to get the grape ones? Mmmm delicious grape!! Rev? Grape? I love the Dracula one as well and I picked that one before I read it was your favorite so no ass kissing here. That would make them so much easier to eat then that box with the little cardboard sliders.

I was all the sudden in the mood last night wandering around youtube to watch Freddy Kruger which is funny because I am not into those kind of movies. I am more into the zombie ones then the slasher type. Also I love a good psychological thriller. But anyway I found (after looking through my other movie sites) Nightmare on Elm Street 3 that I started watching and got distracted by a link of a how to video on how to make a laser pointer out of a dvd writer laser diode and there went my spooky creepy mood. I think I will finish up the movie later.

We had to get up an hour early today to go grocery shopping and of course I missed something but it made me super drowsy. I don’t want to take a nap because it seems like that makes it worse and screws up my sleep pattern. But me so tired! I usually when I turn on the alarm and it goes off I say fuck you alarm let me sleep more then I sleep for 4 hours then I am really fucked because then I want to stay up until like 10 or noon the next day. My best friend works from 5pm to 5am so we usually go to bed about 6 or 7 in the morning and then sleep until 3pm when the alarm goes off. Today we got up at 2.

I love the 80 hours of the 80’s Vh1 Classic is playing this weekend. I watched a little yesterday already and there are some videos I watch all the time and some I haven’t seen in a long time. I watch VH1 classic in the morning on a regular basis. It brings me back to when I was a kid and a teenager watching music videos as often as I could. In fact right now I think I will turn it on while I go and wash dishes and do some laundry. I can’t believe I forgot to do laundry, and Harry my best friend had to wear a dirty shirt to work today I am kind of disappointed in myself a little. Oh well life goes on. I hope everyone is having a great labor day weekend.

NO! I like my collection of neon colored rubber shoes! I have neon pink, black, and lavender, I gotta find my yellow ones, and the ones I got stolen today were silver. They are comfy for me, I have back problems, and these help me. They don’t even smell like feet when you take em off!

Throw them in the shower with some dish soap, hose em down and your ready to go!

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 08/30/2008 10:47 PM EDT

YAY ESSENTEEEEE!

Hi Matt!

Those Nerds are righteous. If I find any I just might have to buy some.

Ghosted by Annette @ 08/30/2008 10:50 PM EDT

I’m never one to allow or condone this kind of behavior, but I want to kick every mom that decided to put their kids in Crocs. Damn if they’re even uglier on tiny feet.

Also, with Halloween…will we REALLY see more “Ghost With The Most?”

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 08/30/2008 11:02 PM EDT

Mandy_Reeves, I wear crocs too. I have a pair of dark blue ones. I wear them around the house like slippers I wouldn’t wear them outside of my property. You can do whatever the hell you want of course but I bought them because I don’t like wearing shoes around the house and I didn’t like how my socks were getting dirty. Also I wanted to not have to put my sneakers on just to get something out of the garage, walk my trash can out to the curb, or walk down the street to get the mail. I have had them for about 5 months now.

Ghosted by Goob @ 08/30/2008 11:02 PM EDT

I just realized, because I am a dork and for whatever reason I remember these things, but today is “I don’t want to think about chicken while eating Doritoes” day.

Ghosted by KB @ 08/30/2008 11:14 PM EDT

A timeless lesson we should all remember and celebrate.

Ghosted by Matt @ 08/30/2008 11:19 PM EDT

The Halloween Bootique place came back last week, but I haven’t been inside yet. Probably still putting up shelves.

No Halloween candy yet, but I actually got some Gingerbread Pop-Tarts in my room right now. Delicious.

Despite the Nerds and Chucky, I guess it’s a little early to Halloweenify the Trapper logo, eh?

Ghosted by Matt @ 08/30/2008 11:44 PM EDT

Nah, it isn’t too early since you know for a fact that you’ll have it Christmasified early anyway.

I don’t know, are we getting Dracula stickers cut out in the shape of a heart this year? I’m still not sure if that’s brilliant or insane.
