08/30/2008: Hallowonderful.
Oooh, it’s in the air. Sort of. I’ve been trying to avoid Halloween mania, as I have much experience in burning out on it too early. (And longtime readers have often had the chance to see this “burning out” happen in realtime.) Still, it’s really, really difficult to shield myself from all things spooky when the material world has already put a bullet in summer and moved onto stuff shaped like vampires. Oh, it’s in the air, all right. And latching onto a holiday season is just what the imaginary doctor ordered.
We went to Party City yesterday, for an entirely different purpose that’s proven so forgetful that I can only consider it as an ostensible one. In truth, I was really there to check out the burgeoning crop of Halloween crap. They’ve started building the spooky displays, but it’s not quite there yet. Dracula’s still battling for shelf space with all of the random summertime party goods. By next week, I expect nothing but Dracula, and I’ll ask to speak to the manager if these expectations are not met.
I didn’t plan on buying anything just yet, but two items (five if you want to get technical) hopped out at me, silently insinuating their awesomeness with such fervor that I had no choice but to be Party City’s first customer of the 2008 Halloween season to charge 8 bucks worth of candy to a credit card.

Wow. It isn’t even September yet, and I’ve already found a contender for best new candy of the ‘08 season. Wonka’s
Nerds have been redressed for Halloween before, but never in such a righteous and life-changing way as this. In fact, these things are so amazing that I didn’t even realize that they
were Nerds until I started taking the pictures. Now that I know, my gold has gravy.
There doesn’t seem to be any kind of umbrella title connecting this quartet, but essentially, they’re test tube candy containers stuffed with spooky-colored Nerds, each topped with a different monster-themed figural cork. I’m having a hard time reconciling the fact that these weren’t around during my childhood, as they feel so incredibly ’80s. They’re just perfect. The test tube concept is brilliant enough, but by the time you inspect the monstrous corks and the old school spooky fonts drenching the stickers, you start floating. And not in that ghastly, ghostly way. I mean you float like someone who did well in life and was given a halo afterwards floats. That kind of floating.

I found four, and though it’s entirely possible that Wonka is offering more, I’m going to assume that this is the complete set. The clear leader of the pack is “Vampire Vaccine,” combining Dracula and blood red Nerds to be my all-time favorite thing in the universe. The others are tied for second — there’s “Bat Bite Antidote,” “Mummy Makeover” and “Werewolf Morph,” and I’m just now realizing that the candies have more than a mere visual theme — they’re actually meant to be
potions! Yes!
Protection against vampires, cures for bat bites, tools for werewolf transmogrification, and I guess the last one’s intended to help you look like a mummy. Bleh. Even with a rare mummy misfire, these are still amazing.

Not to start any misinformed rumors, but I can’t help feeling that these particular Nerds are of a larger variety than the boxed brand. They’ve also been given a less shiny coating — I’d almost call it “stonewashed.” It’s not the kind of thing that every Joe’s gonna notice, but these small upgrades (or sidegrades, or lateral grades, whatever you want to call them) really help sell the confections as something special. They definitely ain’t just Nerds in a plastic tube. Okay, they are. But still.

I also picked up this random rubber Chucky doll, which would need to be considered an “impulse buy” even if it hadn’t been stocked right by the register. As far as a Chucky doll that can be stretched to triple its static height goes, I’m not sure if there was any way to possibly improve on this. Well, I guess they could’ve decreased the copious amounts of text
littering Chucky’s ass, but that’s a pretty nitpicky thing to say about a Chucky doll that can be contorted to slingshot wasabi peas across the room.
I’m fairly positive that this isn’t a new item, as the tag bears a Seed of Chucky logo, and there’s really no reason for anyone to put money into the production of Seed of Chucky merchandise at this stage. Whatever. If it’s old stock, it’s still new to me. Incredibly stretchy, I can now mimic virtually every angle from which Chucky has exploded over the course of his 640,000 films — most notably the “expanding head” scene from Child’s Play 2.
As an added bonus, leaving Chucky’s tag on lets him stand upright, which is something he finds quite difficult to do without said tag to serve as some sort of misshapen cane.
I am now thoroughly inspired to throw on Bride of Chucky and suck up 28.3 grams worth of Bat Bite Antidote. I’m a boy of summer.
PS: Spellcheck confirms that I misspelled “brilliant” on the first go-around. Is that irony, or just incidence? I’ve always wondered. Happy SNT.

The best part of time of the year is when you start seeing Halloween merchandise slowly being introduced just like you said. It means 2 very important things 1. Dracula Kit Kats are just around the corner and 2. Christmas Blowout 2008 is even closer!!!!!

Man, those nerds packs are just too perfect- I should have come op with those. If they don’t have a Frankenstein or Jeckyll/Hyde version I need to get on that…
I can’t say I’m bothered by premature Halloween spirit, I’ve even noticed the leaves on some trees have already changed, but I do wish summer could hang around a bit longer.
I am so sorry to say goodbye to Hulk’s third asscheek. It has helped me get through the past almost three weeks. It would be nice if the Hulk Butt would make guest appearances in future blog posts, but I won’t hold my breath.
Its a nice surprise to not only get a new entry, but a Halloween entry at that. Halloween is my favorite holiday next to Christmas. I just wish my mother would have waited two hours to give birth to me so my birthday would’ve fallen on Halloween. I guess being born on Hell night is interesting too though.

Gotta love the tag on Chucky that details it as “life-like.” Pretty gutsy for a character that was essentially a My Buddy doll brought to life.

Welcome back Matt! I too am gearing up for the season. Given that I’ve been sick for the past week, cooped up in a very air-conditioned house, every time I step outside I’m surprised to find out that the temperature is not in the 50s and that the leaves are still on the trees and I still have to mow the lawn.
Check out Michaels when you have a chance. The Halloween-themed stuff started coming out about a month ago, and there’s some quality merchandise. I like the animated displays, but there’s something weird about Christmas houses moving into Halloween territory. Be on the lookout for a giant “stone” bust that looks remarkably like Vincent Price. I need one of those for my mantle, pronto. The two-faced Medusa isn’t bad either.
I will be celebrating almost-September tonight by watching the television cut of Halloween. I’ve never seen the extended version before and lucked out on finding a used copy of the 1999 limited-edition dvd on Amazon for just under $15. Not bad, considering most merchants online have copies anywhere from $25 to $100 for the out-of-print set.
Happy SNT everyone!
Oh those are awesome! Glad to have you back Matt! I’m having to hold myself back from buying anything Halloweeny until at least mid-September!

Brad: Saturday Night Thread.
I don’t think the “Mummy Makeover” is intended to make one look like a mummy, but rather transform a mummy into their pre-mummification state. That makes much more sense, Matt.
Wow. I really want some of those Nerds.
I find it amusing that we’re getting a Halloween article with Santa smilies at the bottom.
I created a new myspace just for my X-E peeps. I’ve already sent friend requests to a lot of you. Click my name to see it (not much to it right now) or post your myspace address and I’ll send you a FR.
When I saw that AMC was playing a couple of the Halloween movies last night I knew that summer was pretty much over. In addition, Jeepers Creepers was on late night. I had never seen it before and it was truly one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen.

Posted by
Clockwork @ 08/30/2008 9:07 PM EDT
@Clockwork:
Really? You didn’t like Jeepers Creepers? I didn’t care for the sequel but absolutely adore the original. It harked back to an era when special effects weren’t used in lieu of storytelling.
It’s still one of my favorites.
The movie started out promising when you weren’t quite sure who or what the mysterious cloaked figure was, but when you find out it’s a vampire he kind of loses some of his cache which made the last third of the movie pretty boring. Also, I can’t stand the horror movie cliche when the protagonists blatantly put themselves in dangerous positions like they did in this movie.
…The werewolf cork looks more like a Saint Bernanrd than an actual werewolf.

I’ve been purposefully avoiding Party City due to the fact that the change over always gets me down-faded dreams of sports teams that went no where this summer, St. Patrick Day clearance items still hanging on and the allure of pinatas is just too much. However, knowing the transition to Halloween is nearly complete makes a trip there all but inevitable.
Also, I got my Fright Catalog…catalog in the mail this past Tuesday. Life is good.

Hey I have a box of nerds in my pantry! Does anyone want to go halfsies with me? Anyone want to get the grape ones? Mmmm delicious grape!! Rev? Grape? I love the Dracula one as well and I picked that one before I read it was your favorite so no ass kissing here. That would make them so much easier to eat then that box with the little cardboard sliders.
I was all the sudden in the mood last night wandering around youtube to watch Freddy Kruger which is funny because I am not into those kind of movies. I am more into the zombie ones then the slasher type. Also I love a good psychological thriller. But anyway I found (after looking through my other movie sites) Nightmare on Elm Street 3 that I started watching and got distracted by a link of a how to video on how to make a laser pointer out of a dvd writer laser diode and there went my spooky creepy mood. I think I will finish up the movie later.
We had to get up an hour early today to go grocery shopping and of course I missed something but it made me super drowsy. I don’t want to take a nap because it seems like that makes it worse and screws up my sleep pattern. But me so tired! I usually when I turn on the alarm and it goes off I say fuck you alarm let me sleep more then I sleep for 4 hours then I am really fucked because then I want to stay up until like 10 or noon the next day. My best friend works from 5pm to 5am so we usually go to bed about 6 or 7 in the morning and then sleep until 3pm when the alarm goes off. Today we got up at 2.
I love the 80 hours of the 80’s Vh1 Classic is playing this weekend. I watched a little yesterday already and there are some videos I watch all the time and some I haven’t seen in a long time. I watch VH1 classic in the morning on a regular basis. It brings me back to when I was a kid and a teenager watching music videos as often as I could. In fact right now I think I will turn it on while I go and wash dishes and do some laundry. I can’t believe I forgot to do laundry, and Harry my best friend had to wear a dirty shirt to work today I am kind of disappointed in myself a little. Oh well life goes on. I hope everyone is having a great labor day weekend.

Throw them in the shower with some dish soap, hose em down and your ready to go!

I’m never one to allow or condone this kind of behavior, but I want to kick every mom that decided to put their kids in Crocs. Damn if they’re even uglier on tiny feet.
Also, with Halloween…will we REALLY see more “Ghost With The Most?”
Mandy_Reeves, I wear crocs too. I have a pair of dark blue ones. I wear them around the house like slippers I wouldn’t wear them outside of my property. You can do whatever the hell you want of course but I bought them because I don’t like wearing shoes around the house and I didn’t like how my socks were getting dirty. Also I wanted to not have to put my sneakers on just to get something out of the garage, walk my trash can out to the curb, or walk down the street to get the mail. I have had them for about 5 months now.

Mrs. Manimal is getting on to me all weekend for trying to bust out the Halloween stuff from the garage and closet (and wherever else). I too am trying to fight it but…I can see the SIMPSONS Halloween figures watching the MDA Telethon with me shortly.

One cool thing we saw was “Bag of Blood” which was this little plastic pack filled with red syrup candy and it had a little iv drip attached. Pretty cool! It’s definitely in the air now.
Hi yourself, Chief. Sorry I have been a bad blog pal lately. 2 kids, school is back in session, blah blah.

I must say, I’m not feeling particularly Halloweeny yet. It’s been very hot here in L.A., hotter than it’s been in a while. Maybe it’ll start next Tuesday when school starts, that’s when fall always seemed to start to me. Then again, Halloween is usually pretty dead (no pun intended) around here. That doesn’t stop the grocery store down the street from my house from putting a ton of Halloween candy on sale, which is just fine for me.

I was watching part of that new horror movie “mirrors” just now. I found a couple places that have it to watch. I usually go to the movies I want to see, but this was up in the air due to gore factor and lack of money to spend on frivolities.
The first 2 minutes of the film are an eye opener. Like the first opening scene. NOT for the squemish. I’m too tired tonight to follow the plot. 5 minutes in and I’m already confused.

Oh man I LUV Halloween! I’ve been stalking Walmart here for a few weeks now hoping their “Game Time” theme (put up for the Olympics, and ousting the Back to School stuff a few weeks early) for the “seasonal section” to change into Halloween stuff. I’ve already started doodling bats, witches and wizard cats to festoon my hallway.
My daughter wanted to be Tinkerbell for Halloween and they had these more upscale “dress up costumes” in the toy section, and lo and behold there was a Tinkerbell one… so she’s already got it (yeah I’m dying for some Halloween stuff here) and I picked up Patricia Brigg’s Alpha and Omega book (its about werewolves)…. so that was the best I could do with a Walmart still resistant to fall changes.
I hope they have some good stuff this year.
Never been a fan of Chuckie, but those Nerds look totally awesome (and then some).

TWO THINGS TONGIHT:
1. I saw a real live garbage pail kid sticker while riding the 1 line subway uptown in Manhattan. It was affixed upon one those many ads the MTA is paid to put up. (I even see ads for the once-famous Dr. Zizzmor- THANK YOU, Dr. Zizzmor.) So that made my week, but then I got to thinking - maybe it’s a sign. A sign of what? I’m not sure. Are there any psychics out there reading this that can help me? What does this sign mean?
2. Second thing is that I’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo of Wart, the final boss on Super Mario Bro.’s 2, on my leg. I wanted something old-time geeky (video games, tv, comic books, toys etc.) but not something too recognizable like Optimus is after Bay made that shit move. Does anyone think this is a good idea? Any other suggestions of what to tattoo? Has anyone else done something like that before? How did it go? If you don’t want to post your tattoo pics you can e-mail them to me at clawful@gmail.com. Thankee kindly, Lord Matt fer the joyous entry! Just the thing to pick up me spirits!
Great to have a new article - Hulk Man and co. were starting to invade my subconcious.
Anyway, as I think I’ve said in previous years, Halloween seems to be a much bigger deal Stateside than here in the UK. Here, shops (that ’stores’ in Americee) might stock up on a few generic ‘Halloween’ candy packs a couple of weeks before October 31st, complete with generic Halloween clip-art on the packaging et al, but little if anything in the shape of those cool Nerds test tubes and the like. Which sucks, cos I could really go a fix of Bat Bite Antidote!
Then again, maybe I’m just visiting the wrong shops. Come to think of it, I seldom visit ANY shops!! That’s the internet cosumer age for you.
I really want some of those skeletons that you have to assemble. You know the ones with movable joints?

Party City is truly a goldmine for all things nerd.. - whenever I go there, also for unrelated purposes, I’ll always be drawn to their large candy section.. marveling at things like Justice League suckers and little, paper cups displaying the visage of Optimus Prime..
Can we add, “A Blog post from BJ” as something new and exciting? Of course I could be a little disappointed that Goob did not mention me in her shout-out video blog. It’s okay, when you don’t post in forever on a famous site you are famous for posting, you can become quite forgotten very quickly.
It’s funny how people are starting to see signs of Halloween stuff popping up little by little. I saw something last week that I had to force myself not to buy because I had a tight budget. I saw a jigsaw depicting the famous scene from “Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” in which Snoopy’s sillouette rises above the patch and Linus is about to shit himself because he thinks he sees the Great Pumpkin himself! I’m not big into jugsaw puzzles, and if I ever buy it, would I try to put it together, and would I have it finished before Halloween? I keep telling myself how much I need to write in my blog on my MySpace page. Perhaps this puzzle will give me that inspiration.
Teddy Ray: I sent a Friend Request to your MySpace page in case you haven’t checked your site yet.
Anyway, in case anyone has wondered about my whereabouts, the irony is that most of the time I have been in my room. I tend to get into those, “I don’t feel like writing anything” type of funks. Usually if I haven’t joined in a thread on here and over a hundred or so posts have already been posted and I KNOW I won’t have enough in me to go through all the posts before I post mine, I wait until the next blog is posted before I join in. Of course, this means that it has been at least three weeks since I posted on here. Actually, I can’t even remember the last blog I posted on.
Anyway, trying to decide if whether or not I want to see a movie today since my original plans are being changed. I thought about “Traitor” but I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about “Tropic Thunder.” Actually, I think that since I have today off and tomorrow, why not see both? Kind of a good idea, don’t you think?
Oh yeah, I rented a couple movies from Blockbuster yesterday, something I haven’t done in months either. Finally saw “Smart People” which I have for some reason wanted to see. Might be my sudden desire to want to watch movies with Dennis Quaid in it. I guess after seeing “The Rookie” several times and “Vantage Point” earlier this year, I guess Dennis Quaid is rubbing off on me. Surprised Forrest Whitaker hasn’t given me that same effect. Oh wait, yes he has, forgot “The Great Debaters” (oops, here comes Denzel Washington now).
I do want to also say that “Smart People” was one of those movies where you think the movie could have gotten away with a less harsh rating if it wasn’t for the F word being used quite a few times by that foul-mouthed little “girl” (I had it so in my mind to say the “b” word but I just couldn’t bear myself to because it’s such a harsh word for me to say) from Juno, Ellen Page. I can’t tell you how many movies I’ve seen where the rating could have been lower had it not been for a word or a scene that was not needed. I’m not going to go into which ones specifically because I’m in my “rambling” mode and need to draw this to a close very soon.
Anyway, that’s pretty much all I have for right now. Will it be another three weeks + before you hear from me again? I don’t know, I hope not. I need to get myself out of my funks. Of course, I’m sure half of you are practically about to yell at me, “When you going to write a damn blog entry?” Soon…I hope!

No! Not Halloween already! Man…it’s the only time I really feel out of place on this site because I love summer, fall is my least favorite season, and I hate Halloween. As I’ve said (probably every year since I’ve been posting here), I was never allowed to celebrate it as a kid, I have no kids to celebrate it with now, and I’m convinced you need to have some sort of childhood connection to enjoy it in adulthood. If you don’t, it’s just the holiday where you buy candy for other people’s ungrateful kids and get made to feel like a grinch for not being psyched about it. It’s not even that I don’t have good memories of childhood Halloweens, it’s that I have very bitter memories (it was like every kid in the country being invited to a party except you), which has tainted the whole thing for me, probably beyond repair. I tried to get a Halloween mojo the first couple of years I was an XE-er, but I had nothing to add to the blog posts, and found that passing out candy really wasn’t as much fun as I’d hoped. Enjoy your holiday, Halloween-lovers! I’ll probably be in the shadows until November.

Lonestar: You could make a case that Frankie is the lamest of the A-List monsters. After all, other than Van Helsing, he hasn’t been in a movie since the early 90s while vampires, werewolves, zombies, and mummies have been in multiple movies.
BTW, this is how I undertand the monster hierarchy:
A-List-Vampires, Mummy, Frankenstein, Werewolves, Zombies. Maybe witches belong here, too.
B-List or lower- DR Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Invisible Man, Black Lagoon Creature.

You’ve got Pinhead sipping a banana daquiri chatting with Freddy about a possible crossover, Jason and Michael Myers having a standing-silently-and-holding-a-knife contest, Chuckie riding around on a werewolf’s back, Drac and his posse sucking a vein of some wannabe starlet…and then you’ve got Frankie, dressed and acting like that street bum who asks for money to buy his ‘medication’. No-one wants to give the guy a job.

I hope when you’re all mentioning Frankie’s (or Frankie’s monster as he is appropriately known as being it was the doctor who was named Frankenstein and not the monster) lack of the spotlight in the movies, I hope you all remember him played by Robert De Niro in 1994. I mean, what greater honor can you have than have yourself portrayed by the great Robert De Niro? I don’t know when Van Helsing’s movie came out. Hey, maybe I’m mentioning the exact movie you all are quoting. If so, I apologize. I don’t know much more about monsters so I think I’ll keep quiet from now on.

First thing, off topic. Matt, On YouTube, I found
the Walt Disney World tv special with Bea Arthur and Betty White in it. Just type in Walt Disney
World 15th Aniversary Intro. You will have no
problem the rest of that special after you’re
there. Back to Halloween, I recently went to my
local Wal-Mart, and they didn’t have any
Halloween stuff up yet. And no Christmas stuff
either. And that was last Tuesday. And
yesterday, I wen to Big Lots, and I saw
Halloween stuff there. Not much, though I saw
a bust of the Grim Reaper with red LED lights
for eyes and a gargoyle statue. Sadly no
Frankenstein. Is it because they dumbed him
down with The Munsters that Frankenstein is
having such bad luck these days? Poor
Frankenstein.

Lonestar76:Tell me about. Frankie needs to get more respect.
Guise: I couldn’t help but laugh at your description of the monster party.
BJ: Technically your right. The doc is the one who was named Frankenstein, but since the monster was made by him, you could call him just Frankenstein too.

Posted by
dohopoki @ 08/31/2008 4:38 PM EDT
ULTRAMAN: I’ve known that for years. Over the years, it has just become more common to call the monster Frankenstein and not knowing that that was the name of the doctor who created the monster and not the monster itself. Actually, I’ve heard him being refered to more often now as “Frankenstein’s monster” which is more truthful even though in the novel (Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” which I read many years ago in high school) he’s just refered to as “the monster.”
I started watching that Walt Disney Special. Got through the first part and can’t tell you how unrealistic I find Bea Arthur’s performance is in not knowing anything about Walt Disney World or even been there before this special and Betty White acting like a little child. Thought the bit with Dolly Parton and the female characters was pretty cheesy. You can tell how old this is when you wonder where Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, and even Pocahontas were and this special takes places before any of those movies were even in existence! Surprised Tinkerbell or Wendy from Peter Pan weren’t among the group. Oh yeah, and I must confess, seeing the girl in the Alice costume had me thinking of the Tom Petty video, “Don’t Come Around Here No More” in which the setting is the tea party from Alice in Wonderland, Petty himself plays the Mad Hatter and the Alice character keeps being tortured from sinking in his cup of tea to being cut as a cake at the end (the video was on VH1 Classic the other day so that’s why its fresh in my memory). Oh yeah, and those Disney skaters look freaky. I’ve never been to either of the Disney parks but if I ever get to one of them (most likely Disney World unless I take in Disney Land in Anaheim while being there for an Angels game), I hope they aren’t still around. Of course, who knows what replaced them these days!
Well, I guess I better check out Part 2 now. Looks like it’s time for a performance by the late Ray Charles. Why does Emmanuel Lewis looked dressed up like Michael Jackson? Oh that’s right, he was his bosom buddy in those days. Surprised the King of Pop didn’t make an appearance himself. I guess he was hoping the celebration would be at his Neverland Ranch if it even existed in those days. Okay, enough rambling. Time to continue with the special.

Seeing Davy Jones from the Monkees with that hairstyle! I like how they showed them making fun of themselves while they were performing, but I swear, weren’t there four members of the group originally? I know I am probably mistaking them for the Beatles because I know they were four members. Hey, how can I even compare the Monkees with the Beatles? I mean, that’s like comparing apples with watermelons! I know I should have said oranges but I needed a fruit out of the ordinary when compared to apples!

Okay, I keep watching this special and I find more and more outdated material. In Part 6, after going through the whole patriotic act (which you know is outdated because if they did it today they would have U.S. Troops present and also another reminder of what happened on fateful day of 9/11, there was this sort of advertisement of the work of Disney in combining animation with live action on many of their classic films. Okay, what makes this old and outdated? This was before what is probably the most groundbreaking film to ever combine live action with animation. I’m talking of course about “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” (came out in 1988, two years after this special aired). Remember, it was released by Touchstone Pictures which is a film division of Walt Disney so you know if this came out later, like ten years later for the 25th Walt Disney World Anniversary Special, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? would be included, and it would definetly would replace what they considered at the time to be the most beloved feature to combine the two, Song of the South. It’s quite a contrast to what I hear they consider Song of the South to be today, the most racist movie Disney ever produced and released, so much so that it remains one of the few Disney movies to not be released on DVD. I don’t recall it ever having many videocassette releases either. So, for those of you who have a videotape copy of “Song of the South”, you might want to hang on to it because it may be the only way you’ll be able to see the movie. Just a word of thought. Now on to Part 7.

Gotta disagree with everyone over the whole Frankenstein thing - I don’t think he gets work because he’s the least generic. I mean, you can have hoards of vampires, werewolves and zombies but there is only one Frankenstein’s monster. Maybe he’s got Scott Boras as his agent and that explains his obvious absence.

Could someone explain to me how the hell Bea Arthur could be thinking of food when talking about Epcot Center? I could see if she wanted to play golf since the big structure right in the center of it all looks like a damn golf ball! Actually, to be more realistic, she should have said, “I need a drink! Betty, let’s go get plastered at Epcot!” I mean, according to what they said about Epcot Center in “I Love the 80s 3D”, Epcot Center is the only place in the Magic Kingdom where they sell booze. It’s just too bad I was too young when this special came out because I’m sure I could write a much better script than the trash that was written for this special!

Sorry for the double post but I’m having a childhood flashback right now. Since I’ve been on the Disney theme pretty much in all my posts tonight, does anybody remember the show “DTV?” It was pretty much MTV but the videos were clips from Disney cartoons. I happen to be listening to Weird Al’s “Eat It” right now and I remember the DTV video because it had clips from one of those “How To” shorts that Goofy starred in. I think it was called incidentally, “How To Lose Weight.” It’s weird how sometimes your mind will trigger some type of memory when you least expect it. I suppose if I listen to Witch Doctor it will trigger the Chipmunks version. No, “Its My Party” is more than likely to do that!

Okay, now I’ve heard it all. Who would have thought my ears would hear “Uptown Girl” being sung by a bunch of barbershop quartets? That was my first, and let me make it the last time I had to hear one of my favorite Billy Joel songs being poorly altered to the tune of…yich, I can’t bear myself to say it again!
Anyway, after that I got to see Dianne Carroll hitting on Mickey Mouse. All the time I kept thinking to myself, “Where’s Minnie? I hope she socks her one!” When Minnie does show up, all she does is pull Mickey out by his ear. I was hoping she would grab his tiny thin tail. Yes, Mickey does have a tail, you need to watch the old cartoons more carefully because I know I’m right! I’m not hallucinating, of course, if I was then that would explain why I heard “Uptown Girl” being sung to the tune of a bunch of barbershop quartets (okay, I bore myself to say it a second time but please don’t make me say a third time). Anyway, if she would have dragged Mickey out by his tail, I could have said he was dragged out on his ass which probably would be how he was dragged out! Darn the luck! Let’s go and redo that scene for a Special Edition and this time let Minnie wallop Dianne Carroll in the kisser and drag Mickey out on his ass! Oh, and if that’s the case, I can change the song those barbershop quartets are singing. Let’s see…nah, I’d just delete that whole part and instead have them all walk the plank on the Pirates of the Caribbean, and since this is updated, why not replace one of pirates with Johnny Depp. I know, not much of a difference but hey, it’s the thought that counted!
Anyway, had to let that out and this is all what happened on Part 9 of the special 15th Anniversary….blah, blah, blah, yeah, you should know what it is I’m watching already. Anyway, on to Part 10.

Thank for mentioning me in ur video Gooberto. And first too. I’m flattered.
Also, I have never been to Disney World, or Land for that matter. Does this fact make me a monkey?

Okay, I gotta mention this story before I call it a night. I clicked on what I thought was Part 10 of the WDW 15th An. show and while I’m watching, I notice they are singing about Disneyland and the fact it was 30 years old. I thought, “Wait, I thought this was about Disney World, not Land!” Besides, this was 1986 and Disney Land opened in 1955 so wouldn’t this have been the 31st Anniversary? Did they forget the year before that Disney Land (is it one word Disneyland, or two, Disney Land, well, not going to spellcheck what I typed so I’m keeping it at two) turned 30 so they were catching up on their partying and celebrating it along with Disney World’s (this I know is two words) 15th Anniversary? Once I finished watching the segment, I noticed it said “Disney Land 30th Anniversary Parade Part 10″ (I had it on fullscreen so that’s why I didn’t notice what it was before). So indeed, I ended up watching the wrong show for a full eight minutes. I think a good indicator to me was when I saw the hosts were different. Betty White and Bea Arthur were replaced by an old guy and a young girl. It wasn’t clear but I think the young girl was Drew Barrymore. I don’t know for sure and I’m not about to go and watch the whole Disneyland (okay, so I decided to go for the one word spelling this one time) special at this time.
Anyway, when I did find Part 10 of the correct show, it said the video was no longer available. So, on I go to Part 11 with a big gap and not knowing what I missed. Now I’ve seen the whole show minus the Part 10 segment. Ironically, I don’t feel as though I missed anything. Of course, I didn’t see Betty White chasing Donald Duck for a pizza as Lone Star described. Perhaps that was in Part 10?
Okay, it’s bedtime for me. Offhand, it was an okay show for its time, but definetly very cheesy by today’s standards. I might have enjoyed it more had I actually watched it in 1986 but now, no, doesn’t work for me except to go back and see a piece of nostalgia for its time. Oh, and like Hazard, I guess if he’s considered a monkey for not going to either of the Disney theme parks, then so am I! Someone hand me a banana! Actually, if we say we’ve never been to either of the Universal Studios Theme Parks either, does that mean we’re apes? I guess I’m a big giant ape like King Kong. Hey, I’m an attraction at Universal Studios! I’m going to turn over your tour bus!!!! Okay, good night everyone!

Old Godzilla was hoppin’ around
Tokyo City like a big playground,
when suddenly Batman burst from the shade
and hit Godzilla with a Bat Grenade.
Godzilla got pissed and began to attack,
but didn’t expect to blocked by Shaq,
who proceeded to open up a can of Shaqfoo,
when Aaron Carter came out of the blue,
and he started beating up Shaquille O’neal
when they both got flattened by the Batmobile.
But before he could make it back to the BatCave
Abraham Lincoln popped out of his grave
and took an AK-47 out from under his hat
and blew Batman away with a ratatatat!

There was also a Disney special called “Totally Minnie.” where she sang with with Elton John and that “Revenge of the Nerds” guy came onto Suzanne Sommers.
Donald Duck also had his own birthday special hosted by Dick Van Dyke.

So depressed. Missed SNT entirely. Me sad. My epic auctions of all my crap continue! More stories from the blog soon, as I have a story I need to tell about back to school time that I think is relevant and I need XE-er feedback on.
BTW, not trying to be a buzz kill but: still a wee bit too early for Halloween.
That said, I just located my Friday the 13th Box Set yesterday.
Werewolf’s got Nerds?

BJ: That was indeed Ms. Barrymore. Her banter with cohost John Forsythe gets progressively creeper as the show goes on. You really should watch the rest of the special, if only to catch David Hasselhoff singing in some kind of silver foil space suit.
My fiancee has tons of obscure 80s Disney TV stuff, so sadly (or radly) I’ve seen most of these Disney specials multiple times.
Actually, I seem to recall we were watching that DL 30th Anniversary special earlier this summer, and the taping she had included an awesome Chef Boyardee commercial featuring none other than Candace Cameron and Wilmer Valderrama (we think it was him.)

I’ve mentioned that Donald Duck special on here before. One of the discussions I got into on Amazon was about the continuation of the Disney Treasures DVD collection. This was when they were getting to release the Chronological Donald, Volume 3. I was mentioning I wanted to see the Educational special, “Donald in Mathemagic Land” on one of the Treasures volumes and then someone mentioned the Dick Van Dyke special. I think sometime, not today but maybe next weekend, I may actually watch the Disneyland 30th Celebration since I accidentally watched one part yesterday.

I’m sure it’s also been mentioned, but there was also one where Mickey “magically” disappeared and the NBC lineup/celebs (I remember Cheers, Family Ties, John Ritter, Cheech Marin, and Phyicia Rashad) going around trying to find him.

Since lame monsters and Disney are popular topics, lets some surveys:
1.) Who is the lamest/least frightening monster/slasher character/etc.? My choice would be Scream guy. I love the movies, but I’ve seen more frightening children’s costumes.
2.) What is your favorite Disney show/special/movie of all time?
I love the Lion King. I even own the soundtrack.
I used to watch “Kids Inc.” and really enjoy it. I still listen to the theme on Youtube once in awhile.
I loved the 90s version of the Mickey Mouse Club.

1.) Candyman. I watched the first movie and was like MEH, where’s my scares?!?!
2.) I’ll go with Beauty and the Beast.

1. I’ve got to go with the Jeepers Creepers guy–Lame
2. I was OBSESSED with the Little Mermaid as a little girl.

1.) Chucky. I mean c’mon. All they had to do was step on him, take the knife out his hands and crush his head with their foot. IT WAS A DOLL!
2.) Aladdin. The Genie was freakin hilarious.
“I can’t bring people back from the dead. It’s not a pretty picture. I don’t like doing it!”

1. Honestly, I’d have to say Pennywise the Clown from the movie version of “It” seemed to be the cheapest. It’s probably because it was a Made-For-TV movie so what he could do had to be tamed which didn’t leave him to do much.
2. 101 Dalmatians is my favorite Disney animated feature. It’s funny because the period they call consider Disney’s down period from the death of Walt Disney to the hiring of Michael Eisner is really the period where most of my favorite Disney movies came out. 101 Dalmatians, Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, and The Rescuers are among my top favorites.
As a kid, when we first got cable, I was in awe of The Disney Channel. I thought it was a much better station when it was a pay channel than it is now. I literally ate up “Donald Duck Presents.” Actually, it was the theme song alone that got me hooked. Sure it was a chance to see all the classic Disney animated shorts but there’s something about that theme song that made the show that much more special. I find myself playing the theme song constantly on YouTube, when I’m also playing theme songs to other hit TV shows of my youth.
Oh, and I want to mention another favorite show of mine that was on Disney Channel. Mouseterpiece Theater, which was hosted by the late George Plimpton, was nothing more than a showing of a handful of old Disney cartoons set to the theme of Masterpiece Theater. I guess what stood out for me on that show was seeing cartoons on in the evening before the days of Cartoon Network and Toon Disney. Even with cable in those days seeing cartoons on at that hour was a rare thing.
Oh, and yes, I do beleive the Mickey’s Birthday Special where Mickey Mouse goes missing was mentioned here before, but only briefly. I think it was to celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 60th Birthday which would make the special air in 1989, which also would explain the appearances by the Cheers gang and Cosby show crew who’s shows were very big in those days. I remember John Ritter played a detective and he accused and eventually arrested Donald Duck for the disappearance of Mickey Mouse. Probably another special in which if I watched it today I would find very cheesy but back in those days, I would be in awe of it.
Actually, I want to mention this one TV special that aired right around the same time. I forgot the name of it but it’s purpose was to celebrate Earth Day. Danny Devito and his character’s wife (not Rhea Perlman, his real wife) are watching the TV when suddenly every channel has something to say about Earth Day. You had Mother Earth come to this square and she becomes very sick. Actually, it started with Bugs Bunny once again making another fateful mistake by not turning left at Alberquerque arrive at the square and Porky Pig and I think Tweety run off to observe the celebration. That’s when Mother Earth appears, she gets hospitalized, and all of a sudden you see all these celebrities appear either as themselves or their famous movie/TV characters. You had Christopher Lloyd appear in the DeLorean as Doc Brown, Neil Patrick Harris was in his Doogie Howser role treating Mother Earth. You even had E.T. appear in an alleyway and give some sort of book to this group of kids. Yeah, pretty cheesy special now that I think of it. I just wish I can remember the name of it and whether they have any clips online about it. I think the Cheers crew was also in that special, and I know they also had an appearance by the Bundy family from Married With Children. I also remember them doing a Jeopardy segment because Danny Devito got so pissed at his wife, he tries to change the channel and low and behold, Alex Trebek was hosting a Jeopardy segment that had all Earth Day topics. I swear to you, I am not making this special up. I actually remember seeing it! Now if I said that pink elephants were serving me drinks while I was watching this special, then you can raise questions but NO!!!! I was completely sober at the time! Hopefully one of you remembers what I’m talking about so I know I’m not going crazy!!!!

BJ: I believe ye! Saw that special in the long, dark days of second grade at an assembly, but by the Powers, I can’t seem to remember what it were entitled either!
Let’s see, the discussion…
1. The Blob: not even scary when I were a wee swab. In fact, the last time I saw it I were 6!
2. Disney’s Halloween Treat: It just weren’t Halloween unless I saw this at least 47 times a year.
Yarr!
I actually thought of a lamer horror villain, The Fisherman from “I Know What You Did Last Summer” films. Take away his hook, annd he’s just an old guy in a raincoat. At least dress up like Captain Hook or something.

Chucky, the Jeepers Creepers thing and Pennywise all RULE period! =)
My least fav movie monster would have to be that fisherman guy from I know what you did last summer.
My fav disney movie would have to be Hercules. I just love the cool monsters and titans in it. But my fav character by FAR is Hades! Not only does he look AWESOME, but James Woods does a great job voicing him. He really gave Hades a great personality.

I love Bea when she sang that song during the light parade! On and on and on and on! She looked all sexy at the camera when the song began, and I was like…crap she looks like she wants to jump my bones! no thanks Bea… dam! that song went on and on and on!
Oh yeah….yesterday at the flea market I got an Obama shirt…I’ll wear it a few times at least. Only ten dollars so it’s not like I wasted money if I wear less than 10 times…its good political memorabilia anyhow.
Also for 7 dollars I got a really super nice conditon box set of the first 6 star trek movies on VHS!!!! woo! each movie still had the little inserts and coupons, advertising like star trek credit cards, and popcorn or something. It’s in really nice condition, like nice enough to sell on ebay for double the price if I wanted to.
