07/30/2008: X-E’s ‘08 Summer Megaparty: Dr. Pepper.
No content tonight, as I must get a shitload of paperwork done to avoid being shot to death tomorrow morning. Instead, a survey, and one sure to depress you: Talk about the saddest TV/movie moments you’ve ever seen.
Easily, when that big tsunami hit a few years back, they kept showing this clip of a little boy who was sitting on the beach and got swept away by the wave. My son was about the same size and age, man, I hated that.
Saddest TV or Movie moment? I always, *ALWAYS* get teary eyes at the end of “A.I.” for some reason, when he finally gets to have his day with his mom. Not necessarily sad, but it gets me emotional.
TV? That Goddamn Dog Adoption commercial witht eh black and white pictures of all the sad dogs, and that Sara McLaughlin song playing int he background. I turn the TV every time.
I have to say in the movie Where the Red Fern Grows after the first dog dies and the second one is just laying on top of the grave in depression…so sad! Oh and when the shoe in Roger Rabbit dies
when Sweeney Todd finds out that Mrs. Lovett lied to him about his wife being dead

I agree with Emmy, the Jurassic Bark episode of Futurama. I can’t watch that one without tearing up a little.

When Roy Fokker died on Robotech: Macross. I had to go to school that morning, and cried most of the bus ride there. Saddest non-fiction tv: Election night coverage 2000 and 2004.
Just to digress for a momment, if you’re interested Matt, our local Stop-In-Shops have begun stocking Halloween Candy. Nothing says summer more then candy corn.

aah.. I had almost successfully blocked out the Jurassic Bark ep. of Futurama. I’m 32, and I still cry like a kid whenever I see that one.
I will second the commercial for the ASPCA with Sarah Mclachlan singing “Angel.” I have to change the channel right away – otherwise I will start bawling my eyes out.

I have to say The Luck of the Fryish ep. of Futurama.

The second half of Brokeback Mountain.

I third the stupid ASPCA commercial. That song was played at my Memere’s funeral, so it makes me teary ANYWAY.

Add me to the Jurrasic Bark episode list. Makes me tear up.
Also:
I hate to be a Grammar Nazi, but there is no period after “Dr” in “Dr Pepper.” I should know, I live in Waco, Texas, where Dr Pepper was invented and home of the Dr Pepper Museum….You ever hear anyone say “Shoot me a Waco!?” They’re asking you for some Dr Pepper….

The death of Fry’s dog episode of “Futurama” gets me EVERYTIME!
Alright, let me be one of the few guys who references Jem. The episode where flashbacks tell how Jem’s mom died in a plane crash while Jem’s still mad with her mom and never having said a proper goodbye.

When Shelly gets killed in Friday the 13th part 3.

Oh the commercials reminded me of the Pedigree dog food commercial with the dog that was in the shelter…It was on a lot around January. Made me cry everytime i saw it. Now this whole Christian the Lion thing on YouTube has made me cry everytime I watch it!
Has anyone seen the movie Bender’s Big Score? It shows exactly when Fry’s dog gets encased in dolomite.

Ric Flair farewell, or when Kercheck died in Tarzan. And… why is this entry called Dr. Pepper? Nothing at all here is related to Dr. Pepper, unless there was a commercial played during RAW/TV run of Tarzan.

Plague Dogs. Same folks who did Watership Down, which this movie makes look like a Will Ferrel joint. It’s the only movie I’ve never seen all the way through because I. just. can’t.
Saddest TV moment is from Home Improvement, I think the next to last episode when Jill is standing in the hallway looking down into the living room, reflecting on when her kids were young. I was always kind of the same age as Mark, so it made me think my mom was always super sad too. Plus I was just sad the show was ending.
Myself and a bunch of friends saw The Dark Knight at an Imax on opening night. The movie melted my face, I really do believe it’s the best movie of all time. Anyways, when the end credits began, everyone ERUPTED into applause. But then, eerily, everyone got quiet and real depressed because we realized that Heath Ledger would never get the chance to top his amazing performance and that there will probably never be a sequel. It was very depressing and everyone (all five hunred of us) left in silence. But once outside, we began to get excited again talking about how great the movie was.
As for actual sad scenes, when I was a kid I would cry like a baby at the end of Homeward Bound when the golden retriever showed up. I believe his name was shadow.

How about when Tommy the Green Ranger lost his powers. Rita, the self-serving bitch she was, constructed a special candle that was linked to Tommy’s Ranger powers.
When the candle burned out, poof, Tommy’s powers were gone.
As a naive 4th grader at the time, I was certain somehow, someway the Rangers would overcome and save Tommy’s powers. But alas, the candle burned out and Tommy was no longer the Green Ranger.
The episode ended on a happy note, however, as Tommy scored his first kiss with Kimberly and asked her to the school dance. Double whammy, baby.
God, I was so sad because of this episode. This is back when they aired Power Rangers at 7:00 in the morning, so I would watch it before going to school.
I was crying so hard that my mom actually let me stay home half a day, and I didn’t go in until around 11:00, right in time for lunch.
Then one of my friends asked me if I saw what happened, and, in my fragile state, I burst into tears. Eventually, I ended up with a nurse’s excuse to go home for the rest of the day.
When I got home, I cried…a lot.
It was just so damn emotional. God…

NintendoMan: I know what you mean! That commercial gets to me BIG TIME!!! I’m serious! I’m the text book closed off alpha male who’s in full control of his emotions at all times, but when that commercial comes on for those poor critters, it just grabs my hear strings and REALLY pulls on them like it’s playing tug of war. Thats the saddest TV moment and saddest moment period to me. I actually pray to God to help those poor critters. I got a soft spot for em. =( My pick for saddest movie moment? I guess probably when Prime died. To be a kid and see that, holy crap talk about pyschological scaring .

I 4th the pedigree one.
Also, growing pains, when Carols bf dies of internal bleeding in a car accident after he seemed fine.
And the 20/20 interview of Terry and Bindi Irwin

When E.T. dies. Gotta be the saddest movie moment, then when he lives again most joyous. Boy Speilberg sure knew how to mess with your emotions back then.
But I still cry at that death scene and I’m frickin 35 and have had real life people I’ve been close to die. Sheesh!
Hmmm… when I was a kid there were 2 movies that always made me cry or almost cry:
Dumbo, when they take away his mother for being a “mad elephant.”
Monster Squad, when Frankenstein gets sucked away into Limbo.

You ever see that documentary, “People of the Forest” by Jane Goodall? There’s this one part where the mama chimp is found by her youngest chimpling, dead, and face-down in a stream. You see him there, mourning for the mama chimp, along with the rest of the family. Then the chimpling climbs into the tree branches above her body, and builds a nest and just lays there. Doesn’t move. The rest of the family stays for a while, but then moves on, leaving him there. He died of grief a couple days later.
When the kids spaceship sinks to the bottom of the lake at the end of EXPLORERS…epic sadness….

Count me in for Jurassic Bark. Also, The Muppets Take Manhatten when they all split up and sing that “Saying Goodbye” song. I tear up just thinking about it.
Ghosted by pureval @ 07/31/2008 12:06 AM EDT
Sorry to double post but I forgot about “The Land Before Time” when Littlefoot thinks he sees his mother, but it is just his shadow. I refuse to watch that movie now because of that scene.

“Dr. Pepper is much better than Mr. Pibb, because the dude didn’t even get his degree!”~Mitch Hedberg.
Saddest moment? All of the above Futurama eps. I’ll add the ending to “Time Keeps on Slippin’.” And if any of you saw “Bender’s Big Score”…you know exactly what happened to Seymour.
The scene in Darren Aranofsky’s Requiem for a Dream where *simultaneously* we get treated to seeing Marlon Wayan’s character treated like a slave (while coming down from heroin) in some southern jail, Jared Leto’s char. getting his arm sawed off for an infection (again from the heroin) his mom (Ellen Burstyn) getting locked up in a mental institute and electro-shocked and his gf (Jennifer Connoly) being pimped by a bunch of senior citizens in a nasty staged-sex scene (again for the heroin) All to a really heart-wrenching classical score.
Also, on a lighter note the Jurassic Bark ep. of Futurama always tears me up too. (usually see that late at night when I’m more emotionally vulnerable, that’s my excuse.)

Total agreement with everyone on Jurassic Bark and the ASPCA commercial. Also I found the season finale of House pretty hard to watch. Being woke up to say your last goodbyes and told you are going to die in a few hours is pretty depressing.
Ghosted by AdamB @ 07/31/2008 12:15 AM EDT
Also Tom, damn you for making me remember that scene from people in the forest. Blocked that one out for years…..

I agree with the Plague Dogs, it’s the saddest thing ever.
Ghosted by WesGrotesk @ 07/31/2008 12:17 AM EDT
The saddest TV moment I can think of is the episode of Small Wonder where Grandpa doesn’t like Vicki and she starts to cry.
Ghosted by Hoverbored @ 07/31/2008 12:17 AM EDT
Saddest tv moment: probably all those damn My Wish segments on ESPN. That and when I found out George Harrison died
Ghosted by PeterE @ 07/31/2008 12:22 AM EDT
“Planes, Trains and Automobiles”. The movie ends in a still shot of John Candy’s face. I burst into tears EVERY SINGLE TIME. It’s such a strangely touching ending for a comedy.
Ghosted by Ann Marie @ 07/31/2008 12:23 AM EDT
For me, it’s gotta be E.T.’s death, and then the very end where he has to go home. It’s probably the only movie that makes me teary-eyed, although I got a bit choked up the first time I saw the end of the original “Frankenstein,” when the Monster gets trapped in the burning lighthouse and dies.
and in across the universe, all of the scenes during Let It Be
And the end of Juno, even though it was a happy ending.
And Tuesdays with Morrie, though the book was wayyy worse for me.
and Rent. ’nuff said.
i know i’m forgetting stuff….
I’m a sap.

-The end of Field of Dreams when Kevin Costner plays catch with his father. I can NOT get through that scene without losing it each and every time.
-Jurassic Bark
-Luck of the Fryish
-The Eddie Guerrero Tribute RAW
-The Owen Hart Tribute RAW
-I cried when watching the ending of the Chris Benoit/Triple H/Shawn Michaels match from WrestleMania XX: Where It All Begins…Again when it aired on the Chris Benoit Tribute RAW, but after I found out that Chris Benoit was a murderer, I felt dirty.
-The Ric Flair Tribute at the end of the RAW after WrestleMania XXIV
-Here’s one that I doubt anyone else will have ever: I cried watching the final episode of Disney’s Brand Spankin’ New Doug. I had been watching Doug since I was 4 or 5, and I felt like I had a connection with him since we had so much in common: we both liked to draw, we both had active imaginations, we both were always shy towards the girls we liked. It was like Doug was me in cartoon form. I was 11-years-old when the finale aired. In the last scene, Doug runs out of pages in his journal, but Porkchop gives him a new one. Doug is all happy that he will now have a place to write his new adventures…adventures the viewers won’t be able to see it. Then his theme song starts playing, we see his house, and Doug says, “So long everybody! It’s been fun! Your friend forever, Doug.”
At that point, I LOST IT! I still remember it. I was bawling like a baby! My mom thought it was the strangest thing. I kept crying ALL DAY…yet, I kept rewatching the final scene, which in turn caused me to cry some more! Here I am, 11-years-old, on the verge of puberty, and I’m crying over the end of a cartoon show! But DAMNIT! THAT WAS *MY* SHOW! NOT ANYONE ELSES! MINE!
Err…anyway, my mom had to talk to me that night. She told me, and I’m not making this up, that Doug is in “cartoon heaven” now. She was talking to me about Doug the way you talk to a child when their dog dies. I’m pretty sure deep down my mother couldn’t believe that she had to do this. It worked…eventually. Still, I get choked up anytime I watched the finale now (if I ever can, darn Toon Disney not playing Disney’s Brand Spankin’ New Doug anymore!).
Anyway, this is further proof that my parents should have taken me to see a psychologist alot sooner than they did. lol
Anything with a Dog! Jurassic Bark episode. Any dog commercials where they need my help. All Dogs Go To Heaven, I still cannot watch that movie. Also count me in for Land Before Time.
The dumbest thing that made me cry was a yahoo commercial(I think?) where this a lady puts something like weed and feed on on her garden. It works so well their dead dog comes back to life. It really got to me because the dog’s name was Toby, and I had a dog as a child with that name.
Anyone ever see the movie Ring of Bright Water? You don’t even know when the sad part is coming it just hits you out of nowhere! That is one of the saddest things EVER!
