My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

X-E’s ’08 Summer Megaparty: Animal Planet’s Deep Sea Exploration Playset.

Since twenty dollar bills grow on trees, I'm now the proud owner of an Animal Planet "Deep Sea Exploration" playset.

I have a love/hate relationship with this thing, but it's mostly love. For a long while, Animal Planet's toy division stuck with remarkably true-to-life playthings, with a strong emphasis on learning and utmost realism. Somewhere along the way, they realized that kids were more interested in wacky playsets involving mythical creatures and exaggeratedly monstrous real animals. I'm with 'em on that, but for all of the packaging's educational boasting, a playset starring a speedboat and a truck-sized anglerfish can in no way be considered a learning toy.

Since I have little need to gather my base of deep sea knowledge from twenty dollar Animal Planet playsets, I don't mind the fact that there are so many fibs on display here. In fact, I'd much rather be delivered nothing but untruths when it means that my toy anglerfish is going to be the size of a space heater.

I don't know if many real life deep sea explorations come by way of speedboats, but I guess that's why they included that random trio of shark jaws tied to the ship. It's tough to think about the legitimacy of speedboats in deep sea explorations when you've got three pairs of shark jaws mysteriously present.

Also included is a deep sea explorer, identified on the packaging only as "Action Figure." I've decided to call him Peter, because a closer look at the figure reveals him to be the lovechild of Peter Venkman and Peter Petrelli. Peter Venkman-Petrelli comes with one of those archaic diving helmets, as well as a big hammer and what I assume is some kind of metal detector.

Clearly, nothing referenced in the two paragraphs up north explain why I purchased this. Obviously, it was all about the giant anglerfish.

Though it would be interesting to think that anglerfish lurk the ocean depths at sizes twenty times larger than humans, these toys just aren't to scale. Actually, the giant, monstrous anglerfish looks awfully familiar, and I'm pretty sure that the toy's been repurposed from another, non-Animal Planet playset. Whatever, it's awesome. I've already cleared room on my trophy shelf for my new favorite thing on the planet.

Everything about the anglerfish is perfect. From the glowing green lure to the exaggerated teeth, to the weird eyes that alternate between looking like marbles and looking like Ghost Dots, it's the piece of art I've been longing for all my life. And where most pieces of art fall short in the hands-on experience department, the anglerfish certainly does not. Push down on his amber top fin, and his gigantic tongue flies up and down for no apparent reason.

I'll lose the boat and Peter Venkman-Petrelli by the time you read this, but my giant, tongue-wagging anglerfish will be with me long after all of you are dead.

Overall, Animal Planet's "Deep Sea Exploration" playset gets more happy faces than red X's. Its twenty dollar price tag is a bit ridiculous, but stuff like this is destined for the clearance racks, anyway. If you're interested in one, just wait. It'll be covered in red stickers and stocked next to dirty plushies in no time.

Who WOULDN’T want an anglerfish toy that big, just to put on display? Screw the big-mouth bass, THAT thing goes on my wall!

For some reason that angler fish reminded me about the giant ones from Megaman 2 that spit out shrimp bots in Bubbleman’s stage. I can’t wait for Megaman 9! And that other set with the shark, thats definetly the closest Jaws toy other than the Mcfarlane movie maniacs Jaws set. I want em both now :(

im glad they kept some educational sense about them and offered up both the boat and monster/fish. cause its not hard to imagine (through all the horrible toy concepts i suffered through as a kid) foregoing the boat altogether and making the monster/fish into a hybrid vehicle. im talkin – wheels under the flippers, seat-sized compartment for ‘Action Peter” to pilot, and exhaust pipes jutting outta the gills..

That anglerfish is fucking evil and fucking awesome and I will be pissed if no one uses it as their band logo.

YO! Back from my cruise, and back online. Whats up? Other than fish playsets. The cruise was AWESOME! Go on one if you have the chance. It ROCKS!!! Yeah, enough for the exclamation points. Word life.

I was happy to see the old Animal Planet logo but I’m not so sure about the shark jaws on a toy touting it’s educational value :?
Speaking of Ghost Dots, has anybody seen the Dots Elements? I tried the Earth (Pomegranate) and predictably enjoyed it, I want to try the green tea one next.

I think he looks more like Joe Piscopo than Venkman.

The anglerfish pokemon is known as Lanturn. Not to be confused with Cacturne, who is Harley’s main poke. He actually dresses as a Cacturne during contests. Well, maybe like ALL THE TIME.

Harley is strange, but I still love him.

Here he is caramelldansen: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=XD7_C6V3J0w

I rarely understand why you buy many of the things you buy. I totally understand this one.

When this hits the clearance racks it will be mine. But all I want is the fish. Maybe there’s a needy child somewhere who’s been hoping for an unnamed action figure with a boat.

Matt, i have the opee fish with qui-gon jin from episode one and that is definitely a repaint.

That fish reminds me of the fish you kill on Mega Man or the fish from the TG-16 game Deep Blue. :) Definitely a video game motif with that fish.

Squee Yes I have seen that candy too. At the time I didn’t have the extra money to get them but hopefully someday soon I will be able to snatch them all up and make a blog article about it. I am a big fan of green tea and anything that is flavored like green tea so I am looking forward to that.

I’s like to know what exactly the anglerfish is saying on the front packaging?? I can’t quite read it.

That playset is awesome beyond words. For some reason, playsets that could be taken in the tub scored bonus points with me as a kid. I loved all of the “Adventure People” sets that involved diving, boats, sharks, etc., because I could get extra mileage out of them when I had to take a bath. My mom quickly realized I didn’t mind taking baths if I had some badass toys to take with me.

He appears to be saying “Hey, Who turned off the light?”

Which makes no sense to me.

When I was a little squirt of a Reverend, my favorite educational toy was this plastic house filled with anthropomorphized insects with furniture and clothes and a working elevator. This was an educational toy because it taught me that we’re all just anthropomorphized plastic insects filling our meaningless roles of routine and repetition until the giant child in the sky loses us under the refrigerator. I guess it was sort of a philosophical education I was getting, with that thing.

For such an efficient killing machine he certainly has surprisingly clean teeth. :O. cool figure.

I’m surprised no one has done a giant anglerfish underwater creature film, because that could be more frightening than any shark or pirahna.

Or at least do a remake of Pirahna where they glow-in-the-dark.

Bought this for my nephews’ birthdays, along with the other $20 set (it has a shark, i think…) I used to work at Toys R Us, so i know all about the Animal Planet line. it’s not very popular, regardless of all the two-headed dragons and giant anglerfish they spit out. My favorite, though, is the two dragons package where the dragons are set so close together that it looks like they’re Frenching each other long distance.

Come to think of it, i still want that set…

Matt, you think you’re going to outlive us? I doubt it, my friend. You’re the one eating and drinking twenty year old groceries and drinking Bullshots.

Why is Animal Planet producing things with dragons in them? Did I miss the news that dragons were now “real?”

Wow thats one scary fish. its things like that that have kept me from ever stepping foot in the ocean!

Wow, those Clone Wars Happy Meal toys look kind of creepy. They look like spaceships with giant heads.

I think that your angler could be classified as the second most terrifying fish ever… Yesterday, I found myself wandering around a street fair, where I happened across a booth selling, of all things, dead, possibly freeze-dried fish with plastic googly eyes glued on them. They ran the gamut from perch, puffer fish, catfish, pike, bluegill, and even small sharks. Terrifying. Simply terrifying.

Speaking of Animal Planet, am I the only one that finds “Meerkat Manor” boring this year?
