07/15/2008: X-E’s ‘08 Summer Megaparty: BULLSHOT.

As frequent readers know, I’m a gigantic fan of Bloody Marys and Dirty Martinis…and virtually any cocktail that drinks like a meal and sort of doubles as a soup. Searching for new horizons, I stumbled upon a new recipe — one that seems completely gross, but is actually so unbelievably good that I’m going against my vow to never write blog entries while half-crocked. Meet the BULLSHOT.

Christ, you’re going to think this is so disgusting, but I swear, it’s not. Basically, a Bullshot is a spin on the Bloody Mary, replacing the usual tomato juice with beef broth. Uh huh. It’s conceptually unpalatable for sure, but once you taste this shit, you’ll realize that it’s the cocktail only a cow could hate.

While on par with the insane sodium level of a Bloody Mary, the Bullshot somehow feels lighter (likely because it’s less “pulpy” than its crimson cousin), and is actually far easier to drink. The vodka in a Bloody Mary always seemed halfway to pointless, but with the Bullshot, I’m barely finished with the glass and I’m already feeling those warm, beefy fuzzies.

If you’re having trouble reconciling the idea of beef broth and vodka, note that there’s a lot of spicy add-ons to help it feel like more than that. Lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, celery salt and a fuckton of Tabasco. The end result is brown and beautiful.

It’s the kind of thing I don’t think I could ever bring myself to order if I was at a bar. Chances are, they wouldn’t have a clue what I was talking about, and even if they did, I’d spend the rest of the night being known as the guy who ordered the beef soup cocktail. On the other hand, while it’s hard to disguise a Bloody Mary, the Bullshot looks almost identical to a Long Island Iced Tea. Covert disgustingness FTW.

The primary ingredients are shown above. I’d give you a recipe, but honestly, it’s just like the Bloody Mary in that you can mix it in any number of ways and still come out golden. If you need some starter ideas, try this recipe.

Considered more of a morning drink and hangover cure, I look forward to breaking the rules and making the Bullshot an occasional midnight snack whenever the mood and/or opportunity presents itself. Sure, the cocktail makes you feel like a salt-filled shitbag, but so what? BEEF VODKA. It just has no right to be this good, but it is.

So what else do you guys think Nintendo will reveal at E3? Rumor has it a new Super Mario Galaxy, Pikmin, and Mario DS will be revealed. I think, on top of that, a new Zelda for Wii and DS, Wave Race for Wii, and 1080 for Wii. But I’m just happy about Animal Crossing: City Folk and Pokemon Ranger 2. Two key franchises, on top of Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music, etc.

Matt: Articles like this are the reason I come here. I mean, BEEF cocktails? This is the sort of bizarrely awesome thing that I find my greatest enjoyment in.

As for those who are excited about Animal Crossing: City Folk, count me amongst your number. I am SO getting this game when it comes out, not to mention hoping against hope that I can import my character from the GameCube Animal Crossing. It’s coming on November 16th, and I can’t wait.

Aaron, don’t get your hopes up; rumor had it there would be a Kid Icarus and Punch Out announcement today/this week, but it hasn’t happened….

Ghosted by Shuanfu @ 07/16/2008 2:41 AM EDT

Shuanfu, don’t worry bout my hopes, because they weren’t that high to begin with. Well, there high, but I know rumor from fact. Sucks about Kid Icarus Wii. And I never heard about Punch-Out. That would be AWESOME! Anyone excited for Castlevania Wii? Looks awesome.

Ghosted by Aaron @ 07/16/2008 3:34 AM EDT

I mean, I never heard of Punch-Out Wii. I played the original. Little Mac FTW! But Nintendo is known for it’s surprises, so not all hope is lost, in my book.

I had to comment here because, yes, I have had the bullshot.

It was many years ago and we read about it in Maxim magazine. I can say two things about it.

1) I loved it. I drank mine and everyone elses who couldn’t finish it.

2) I had never been so sick and hungover in my entire life, and still have not been so. I had a goat-t at the time and I had to shave it off to get the smell of beef broth and vodka off.

Ghosted by JosephC @ 07/16/2008 4:06 AM EDT

BOOOOOZE! My friends and I have a theory that in days past, the guy who invented the word booze had to be drinking it at the time!

Ghosted by Alexander @ 07/16/2008 5:59 AM EDT

Sounds like just the thing I need to make my day go by just a hair bit better. Although, I may just swap out the Vodka and everything else for a nice fifth of ol’ Uncle Jack.

I’m a Texan. So… YeeeeHaaa!! Finally, a drink containing two of my favorite things: beef products and liquor!

Matt, my cowboy hat is off to you… if I wore one.

Ghosted by Hope @ 07/16/2008 7:09 AM EDT

Oh my, that is the most disgusting drink I have ever heard of. I don’t think my gag reflex would allow even an ounce of that stuff to pass down my throat!

Ghosted by earthwormgoddess @ 07/16/2008 7:28 AM EDT

No too many fans of the bullshot. I just don’t like my alcohol to taste like food. I saw a recipe for a shrimp martini and just couldn’t imagine ever drinking something like that. I pretty much like beer and when I drink liquor it’s either straight or simple mixtures, like vodka and tonic or something.

I will mention this drink to my friends and maybe one of them will be willing to try it.

Ghosted by DC @ 07/16/2008 7:42 AM EDT

You know, it occurs to me that you could make this drink with bacon vodka (click my name) and serve it with a side of nachos and invent the world’s first Bacon Cheeseburger Cocktail.

Ghosted by Jedoc @ 07/16/2008 7:48 AM EDT

I donno, doesn’t sound that gross or shocking to me. Of course I haven’t even taken a sip of booze since I was 16, so that would be…10 years ago. If I drank I would be so willing to try this in a heart beat!

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 07/16/2008 8:16 AM EDT

“I’m barely finished with the glass and I’m already feeling those warm, beefy fuzzies.” I think I may need to break out that quote in public sometime soon. seriously, I read about this drink in one of my bartending books that I bought when I was flirting with the idea of becoming one instead of being a server…..and I have always wanted to make it. Like someone said before, I too have basically the same taste in adult bevies as matt, so these seem pretty tempting to me. Speaking of old cookbooks- did we ever find out which old sandwich was the most sought after in that old blog entry from a few months back? the idea of luncheon meat still haunts my dreams (and not in a good way)

Ghosted by Leigha @ 07/16/2008 9:44 AM EDT

Hrm….Olive loaf martini.

Ghosted by Bill @ 07/16/2008 10:03 AM EDT

That drink actually doesn’t look too bad! If I ever have Vodka and beef broth at the same time I just might try it once. I don’t drink really I don’t enjoy being slurred so I don’t think that is ever going to happen. I have drank Mike’s hard lemonade before, strawberry daiquiri’s, margaritas, and wine coolers. Also beer. And that’s it.

I don’t usually get jazzed up about video games but I watched a lot of E3 on G4 this morning and last night and that was pretty exciting. I am on the fence about Animal Crossing but Wii Resort looks very promising. I still haven’t gotten my Wii out of the box yet. Hopefully I can get this Friday a Nyko rechargeable dock and a HDTV cord. 60 bucks right there sigh. I hate AA batteries or any other disposable batteries with a passion so I think the 30 dollar dock is the only thing that I could tolerate and might as well get it at the beginning.

At least my best friend Harry is getting amusement out of it. He is laughing at my misery. I want to shadowbox :( Also once I practice some I totally want to set up my camcorder on my tripod and show you all me playing Wii sports like a doofus lol. You can’t really play on it and look smooth or cool. Hella fun though. I am on the fence about Mario Galaxy it looks fun but after you beat it then what you know?

Ghostbusters actually looks like a decent game. Especially multiplayer even though they didn’t mention much about it they just said it was possible. They are just leading us on and on.

I enjoyed the Wii presentation, I wouldn’t mind doing those presentations for a living I think I would be good at them. I enjoyed the lady I forgot her name, the one that broke her left wrist. Cammie? Connie? Don’t remember.

Fallout for the xbox looks good too. My best friend the end of last year got an xbox elite so that is possible for me to get that and play it but I would rather do the Wii sports type of games. I like the simpler reg nes type of games those are fun to me. Not to diss anyone I just want you to understand where I am coming from.

In other news, this Friday hopefully we will get the reserved seat tickets for the Blue Oyster Cult that is going to be August 8th so when it’s all arranged that we can definitely go I am going to be so excited. I am not a huge fan but I do want to go really bad. According to my best friend that is when the tickets are going to be sold. I looked it up before but I will take his word for it.

He has diabetes and people with diabetes have poor circulation and so his right leg has been really hurting because of the office chair at his work he is trying to get his boss to buy new office chairs which hopefully won’t take that long. This just started a little over a month ago. But anyway I think the only way he can go to the concert is if we get reserved seats because that way he can sit on one of the folding chairs instead of a bench outside of the fence like when I went to go see Night Ranger (hells yeah!) last year. I really want him to go because I don’t want to walk about a mile at 11 at night and I think he would really have some fun if he went with me.

He needs to get his shift switched though for it at work because he works from 5pm to 5am and his days off are Mon and Tues. He really has been suffering because the guy that usually works on his days off took off with his kids for a vacation at Disneyland so he has been working 16 days in a row. That guy better come back with a bad sunburn or something lol. A flash mountain picture as a gift perhaps? :)

Guess I’ll start commenting again…I only waited this long to punish you, Matt. Anyway, this drink makes me think you could take it the other way around and start putting vodka in beef stew. Too bad it isn’t really stew season yet…

Ghosted by Toffeecake @ 07/16/2008 11:49 AM EDT

All this alcohol talk is making me want to toss back a few. Too bad I’m at work and apparently that’s frowned upon. Pfft.

I’ll stick to my Sam Adams Summer Ale. Although I kinda chuckled at seeing Tito’s because my gf always has a bottle of that stuff in her freezer. Always.

When I first saw this entry I misread it as “Bullseye” and thought you were gonna talk about the Daredevil villain, barbeque sauce, the obscure 80s Jim Lang gameshow, or archery/riflery.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 07/16/2008 12:04 PM EDT

So I’m sitting at the laundromat (or, as I like to call it, the Washeteria) trying to come up with a good name for my bacon vodka variant.

Right now I’m torn between Bacon Burger Blaster and Ronald’s Revenge. But judging by the humor exhibited by your average cocktail menu, it probably doesn’t matter. It’ll just end up being called something like “Sex on the Beef” or “Bacon Double Entendre With Cheese” or “Screaming Meatgasm” anyway.

Ghosted by Jedoc @ 07/16/2008 12:14 PM EDT

O M G. When I read the words “Beef Broth” I literally slapped my hands over my mouth in hopes that it would hinder the fact that I thought I was going to instantly puke. It barely worked.

I guess it’s cause I’m vegan, but Jesus Christ, I couldn’t even read the rest of that article. :( Wow…

AHAHAHAHAHAHA Sex on the Beef!

that looks so nasty it’s not even funny. I lost my lunch looking at it. shit.

Now, make an ecto cooler out of alcohol and we’ve got a delicious drink. I’ve had one before and it wasn’t bad.

Ghosted by Rixliss @ 07/16/2008 1:32 PM EDT

I don’t like alcohol of any kind anyway, but this is just…a whole new level of WTF. XD I imagine this tasting something like beef broth mixed with Tabasco-flavored cough syrup, and that thought makes me feel very very sick.

Ghosted by Annette @ 07/16/2008 1:40 PM EDT

has anyone used Absolut Peppar in a Bloody Mary, Martini, or anything similar?
I had never heard of it until i was at a bar with some friends recently, so we took shots of it, which were HORRIBLE.

It seems like the kind of vodka that’s made for spicy mixed drinks, tho, since it itself is spicy.

Ghosted by snotty @ 07/16/2008 1:48 PM EDT

That drink would hit my instant vomit button.

Isn’t a bullshot what Rodney Dangerfield’s character orders at the banquet in Caddyshack?

Ghosted by Andrew @ 07/16/2008 1:58 PM EDT

Annette I’m with you, when a fuzzy navel is considered hard liquor (like it is to me) I’m pretty sure beef broth and vodka would not go down so well

Since I dont’ drink I have no interest in that Bullshot thing, so here’s my E3 rundown for your entertainment.:

E3 has been a total wash for Nintendo’s Wii- I don’t see what all the excitement is for. Miyamoto confirmed they were working on a Zelda by saying his team is *always* working on a Zelda….
WII MUSIC ? Give me a break. You shake your remote and push buttons and music is reproduced on screen. Though it doesn’t matter what buttons you press. It’s like a rhythm/music game without the “game” or “rhythm” part.
WII RESORT? Who has ever swordfought on a resort island? It looks awful… though hopefully they can prove me wrong.
ANIMAL CROSSING YESH though we already knew it was coming so it wasn’t a surprise but I’m all over THAT.

As for the DS! There are TONS of great games headed for the DS. Thank goodness for third parties! Rhythm Tengoku, new Castlevania!!, Master of the Monster Lair, port of Rhapsody: A musical adventure, Sonic Dark Brotherhood, Rune Factory 2, The Legend of Kage 2 (remember Kage 1 on the NES? I betcha do), Locks Quest… etc. These are all unique games for the handheld. Woot!
And we are getting SOMA BRINGER!!!!! Finally!

PS3 was a wash… the only thing I was interested in was the Ratchet and Clank Future Expansion and Pixeljunk Eden. Sega has some surprisingly good lookin’ games. If they play good I’ll be happy.

XBox360 had some truly lame stuff, such as their “avatars” that are not much more than less blobby looking Miis. Yawn. But the games they had already announced looked awesome. Too Human coming finally, Final Fantasy XIII now on X360 too, Soul Calibur IV stuffs, Viva Pinata 2, the new Banjo/Kazooie game, Fable 2, Star Ocean: Last Hope, I know I’ve missed stuff, but that’s a pretty hot lineup (realizing that FF and SC are not exactly system exclusive).

So hmmmm that’s E3. With a quick happy mention of Locoroco 2 on the PSP. The first one was one of the happiest games ever. YAY.

I don’t drink, so these posts are lost on me, but I can’t help but think that some of these recipes were dreamed up by people that were already three sheets to the wind. Vodka, worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, tabasco, and…beef broth?

Fuck a duck.

Ghosted by Teddy Ray @ 07/16/2008 2:51 PM EDT

That sounds fuckin’ delicious. I too have a fondness for soupy drinks, but rarely indulge my love for fear of the chorus of laughs that erupt when I ask for them. I love mary’s and those beer drinks with the clamato… mmmyummy!

I so want to try this! The difficulty being- how I can try it without anyone asking me what it is. Cause if I say “beef-broth”… the laughing will not end.

*le sigh*
Someday. when I’m home alone and can hide the evidence.

I’ve been looking and just coming up with another version that isn’t as fantastic to me :(

And when I look up Bobby Dicola, was it? No results ;_;; It wasn’t Vince Dicola was it? Cuz that dude worked on TF: The Movie, didn’t he?

OMG!!! I’m so going to have to try the bull shot. It seems pretty tasty with some scrambled eggs and toast and like hash or something.

Yes!!! I am so in love with the ideas for the new Animal Crossing. as I said….we should all get it in November and have a HUGE SNT where we all hop from town to town.

Speaking of which…anyone have Animal Crossing WIld World for DS? I wanna visit some towns.

LOL….I was watching the part with Shigeru Miyamoto, and when he got done playing the sax he busted out with a giant HERRO!in his awesome accent and i laughed so hard I peed a little.

I’m sorry but that thing just looks foul. I’d like to keep my vodka and beef as far apart from each other as possible.

In other news, there’s going to be what appears to be a cool documentary coming on the History channel at 9:00 tonight about the psyche of Batman. I of course will be watching/recording it. I’m probably going to go to the midnight premier of THE MOVIE EVENT OF THE YEAR tomorrow night, but I really hope the jackasses that usually come to these things will try to behave themselves. I usually avoid midnight premiers because I hate the crowds and the idiots that show up to them, but for this movie, I’ve gotta see it ASAP. I just hope it isn’t sold out. It’s only the one movie that I want to see more than anything in the world this year.

Congrats Mystie on having a kickass life. Now shut about it. Just funnin’. Congrats on the car.
