X-E’s ’08 Summer Megaparty: Star Wars Activity Book.

Happy SNT, if you're here for it. I'm itching for one of our running commentary movie nights. Is anything decent on? By decent I mean scary/awful.

I miss Quackers. Anyone remember them? Pretty early '80s junk food inspired by Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, but in the shape of DUCKS? That was really the only difference; even the variety of flavors was the same as the more popular Goldfish crackers. I was half-obsessed with them, especially after using Quackers to send no less than 100 seagulls into a psychotic frenzy on the beach in Wildwood.

These weren't the first crackers to make a bid for Pepperidge Farm Goldfish's throne, and they certainly weren't the last. I agree that Goldfish crackers are just about perfect and that they're probably the foodstuff most commonly served in heaven, but I wish Quackers survived for longer than three hours. They didn't, and that's why you don't remember them.

I've written about this Star Wars "Friends of the Force" activity book before, and now...I'm going to do it again.

Strangely, while the cover art seems to suggest a fair amount of Original Trilogy coverage, 350 of the book's 400 pages are exclusively dedicated to The Phantom Menace. This was explained away once I noticed that "Friends of the Force" was published in 2005. I guess they wanted to repurpose leftover stock and/or art, but since it was a bit late to make a fuss over Boss Nass, they got sneaky.

I don't have many horrible things to say about this one. I'm a total sucker for activity books. In my youth, I loved nothing more than to hole myself up under a blanket tent, with an activity book, a pen and copious amounts of pretzels. And if I was fortunate enough to construct my blanket tent next to one of our heating vents, I had all the makings for the ultimate night.

Still, with "Friends of the Force" boasting an absurd 400 pages, its cornucopia of mazes, word searches and how-to-draw guides was sure to have at least a few clunkers. Like this one!

There are at least 30 pages dedicated to "puzzles" like this, where you're supposed to choose one of four options to correctly complete the picture. Suffice to say, even the Retarded Penguin who kicked off X-E's Summer Megaparty wouldn't find much trouble with this. While it would've been interesting to assume that Luke's head was a rock or that Yoda spent his twilight years teaching the ways of the Force to a much taller Yoda, these "complete the drawing" puzzles were filler of the highest order.

Here's another...

This one was already testing the waters of obscenity, and then it cannonballed right the fuck in by making one of the four "complete the drawing" options a patented guide-the-blowjob hand.

Messy Tessie.

Finally, we have the sando aqua monster, which I feel should be capitalized, but who am I to argue? There's nothing wrong with this page...I just love sando aqua monsters. If you don't recall, we saw one of them fairly early in The Phantom Menace, during the underwater monster fish chase sequence. The thing was only onscreen for like half a second, but it's still probably my favorite visual from the entire movie. Well, aside from that weird grimace the old fruit vendor chick made before informing Anakin of the impending sandstorm. Cracks my shit up.

Sorry to DP…but I have very fond memories of Quackers, Tuna sandwhiches and Pole position cartoons. That and I think American Tale or Rookie of the year…can’t remember

I remember consuming mass quantities of the sour cream & onion quackers. I seem to remember eating Minute Gourmet microwave dinners too at this time period and Watching syndicated episodes of MTV’s Remote COntrol game show on one of the local stations…craziness.

I have that activity book! I broke my foot about two days before Episode III came out, and since I was semi-housebound, my brother bought it for me. Good times, except for the broken foot part.

BUMMER!

My old man had to work today and has now passed out on the couch. All I’ve got is some gin and some bread I baked and a hot throbbing weiner dog to keep me company. Some Saturday night this is turning out to be. I don’t even know anything about star wars. :(

I feel the like the “Force flows through a jedi” picture should be used to fill in a badly drawn cartoony head with googly eyes.

Yay I have a chance to participate in this one! The other one I didn’t have cable now we do and the deluxe channels as well. Even though most of you guys are on the east coast it seems and I am on the west. Or we could go on a site like Joox.net and watch online together. They have a lot of freddy kruger movies and that kind of thing. Their player works fine for me but there unfortunately is some movies on another player that makes my browser crash everytime. Too bad they don’t label which ones are which so I can’t avoid them. If I am downloading something or posting a post like this one I don’t surf Joox because I don’t it to crash because of that one particular player. Most of the stuff is great though. I figured out a couple of days ago I can convert the FLV type of files which are flash to AVI which is video with the converting software I have so I am very happy about that. I can download movies off of joox again and just convert all of them to AVI.

Talking about activity books I had growing up two activity flip books that were Ghostbusters 2 themed. I completed one and brought it home with me.

I had a collection of coloring books at my other Grandma’s house (my Dad’s mom, my Mom’s mom raised me and we always called my Grandma from my Dad’s side our other Grandma) because she didn’t watch tv that much and it was quite honestly kind of boring. Our Grandma we lived with knew it was boring so she bought us coloring books to take and one time bought my sister and I each a little sony am/fm radio w/ extra batteries so we could listen to music while coloring. We also had barbies and a big box of little indian figures, cowboy figures, farm animals, and white little picket fence segments that we divided up the land with and so you could see where the cowboys lived and the indians and the roads.

Also we each had a sewing kit with uncompleted cross stitching in these cookie tins with pictures on them. Like one I think had a wolf on it howling to the moon and another was a picture of a cowboy. I saw one of those tins at the store the other day and my eyes lit up, I haven’t seen one in years and I automatically thought of those cross stitch patterns.

My other Grandma died when I was 12, we visited my Grandpa (he was kind of like a Step Grandpa, my Grandma got remarried and he wasn’t my Dad’s biological Dad) once and then never again. I kind of wish we could of picked up the toys then so we still had them. Also all of the incomplete coloring books. But I was 12, shy and kept to myself too much to ask such requests. I don’t feel too bad about it but I wish I still had them.

We didn’t just sit around coloring, we went fishing, out to a park to have a picnic, and we also went to go visit some of my really white trash relatives. My Grandma the sweet woman she was would bring them jars of homemade jams and apple butter with ziploc bags of cookies we made the previous day and would catch up on their crazy lives. They were nice people probably, just very low brow. We also picked berries, apples and peaches. I remember that being so much fun as a kid. Who knows what that would feel like now.
