06/07/2008: Chex Mix Seasoning Packet from 1990, very exciting.

Thanks largely to the gamut of ’80s/’90s Chex Mix commercials starring the Peanuts gang, I’ve come to consider no winter holiday complete without a trough full of buttered cereal and snacks drenched in Worcestershire sauce. I can’t pronounce “Worcestershire,” but I enjoy the invitation to smear it on Chex cereal.

While the good people at Chex HQ would have me believe that this “Chex Mix” was a holiday staple since the cereal’s inception, I give all credit to Chuck Brown and his crew, who always managed to make everything they cooked and ate look so ridiculously palatable. I remember one Peanuts cartoon where the gang went to France, and there was this twenty minute scene where the non-French speaking Charlie Brown failed in his attempt to order “one loaf de bread.” I ate nothing but loafs de bread for the month following that.

Then there was the classic Peanuts Thanksgiving feast; a glorious spread of jelly beans and ice cream sundaes that charmed my ass straight to the grocery store so I could attempt to recreate it. I can only describe the Peanuts gang’s influence over what we find appetizing as something metaphysical if not outright occult. There’s no logic behind it. It just is.

Little did you know that everything above was merely an introduction to a photo of a sealed Chex Mix seasoning packet from 1990. I took the long way home on this one.

I can’t remember exactly how it came to be in my possession, but I’ve got what’s likely the last remaining Chex Mix “Instant Party Seasoning Pack” in existence — a cereal “premium” stuffed inside Chex boxes in 1990. Like the Ninja Turtles “Honey Ooze” I wrote about recently, I refuse to open this seasoning pack due to the high probability that it’s the last of its kind.

My desire to preserve history is pretty annoying in this case, as I’ve never been able to truly master cooking up a batch of Chex Mix. I tell people that I’m good at it, but I know the truth: My Chex Mix needs work. I don’t know if the various salts, sugars and tamarinds inside this polyurethane wrapped foil pack of dust has gone sour in the eighteen some odd years since its creation, but for the ultimate result of the perfect batch of Chex Mix, the risk/reward ratio seems to lean towards the latter.

Maybe a Chex Mix seasoning pack wasn’t the most action-packed blog topic that I could’ve chosen, but it felt like I was fated to do this. Not ten minutes after finding the pack in one of my many cardboard trunks, I stumbled upon a 1990 magazine ad promoting the promotion:

Lucy totally went pinky-up, so you knew this shit was serious.

I’ve forged batches of Chex Mix for every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday in recent memory, and eventually, I must assume that the law of averages will favor me with a bowl that tastes just right. Until such time, all I can really do is draw pictures of dinosaurs wearing sunglasses.

Happy SNT.

PS: In case you didn’t catch the green note on the Trapper logo, we’re set to move forward with X-E’s Summer Megaparty as of July 1st. What this means: New blog posts everyday, at least for the month of July. Vegas odds are against this being a successful venture, but we can safely assume that there will be many, many more entries than usual. Feels like I should add an emoticon here, but I know it’s kind of improper. Fuck it. :)

I guess I’m open for some kart if anyone out there happens to be alive for it. I’ll be searching for say, 45 minutes.

I hereby declare a unilateral shift in conversation, as I do not have Mario Kart. The Wacky Warehouse was both the peak and the decline of Kool-Aid. Discuss. And click my name for more on the pressing issues of our day. Next week, our guest will be Sharkleberry Finn.

Terror Claws: i got an Alf comic book today at a local antique mall.. – it’s got an epic one-page advertisement for Kool-Aid Purplesaurus Rex in it.. – brought back some great memories..

Does anyone remember that Alf actually had a show? He seems like he’s more of Gary Coleman caliber celebrity these days than a fictional sitcom character.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 06/10/2008 9:22 PM EDT

I think I MAY have seen one episode but who the hell knows, wasn’t he like a cat that ate aliens or something??

Ghosted by JoshC @ 06/10/2008 9:32 PM EDT

dohopoki: the local library surprisingly has all four Alf DVD box-sets.. – i’ve watched them all, too.. – the show actually holds up really well, or at least i thought so.. – granted, there’s a lot of sitcom shtick.. but Alf actually has some good lines.. – the only other reason to watch is the father, Willie Tanner, as his over-the-top performances are golden..

JoshC: vice-versa! – he’s an alien that eats cats!

I fooled you with my superior wit Brian!

Actually I love Alf, I had the read-along Alf plush thing when I was a kid, I used to put an old supertramp tape in him and while away the hours until nap-time.

I’m pretty jaded about the local library, it rarely surprises me.

Ahh Alf. So popular my best friend went in costume (full fuzzy costume) for Halloween. Don’t remember my costume, but it was lame by comparison. :(

If I weren’t so short I’d throw down for revenge by doing an awesome Darth Vader. But when you’re 5′8, it’s kinda tough. :(

i’ve got to call it a night early, guys and gals, i’m being kicked out of the room.. – but, i’ve got One Missed Call and some sky blue Mountain Dew to keep me company.. – talk to you all later!

I used to watch Alf when I was a kid. My sister had an Alf plushie at one point too.

Also he was in Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue. Hilarity.

Yeah Mandy, I hope this tomato shit doesn’t last much longer, I eat those fuckers like candy in the summer. Even when I make tacos, they’re half tomato. I’ve got like two on-the-vines I bought a few days ago and a big pack of the cherry kind and I’m gonna haveta make em last.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 06/10/2008 11:55 PM EDT

I loved Alf and watched the show religiously as a kid. I swear the series finale was the first time I ever felt like there would be no tomorrow, I was that broken up that it was over. What kid wanted an Alf free tomorrow anyway?

Just checking in, and it’s my only post for the day. Didn’t work on a blog as I promised. Got off of work and went to my room and CRASHED!!!! Actually tried picking up a few of my books and reading a chapter or ten pages if the chapters are mega long. Of course the books are all about the same thing, sports, baseball to be speicific. Typical reading material for me, but hey, if you want to get back into a daily reading routine, it helps to start off with what interests you most. Of course I’m not thinking going from reading about the Brooklyn Dodgers will leap me to War and Peace, except probably if it’s about the Dodgers revenge on the Yankees in the ‘55 World Series, or their collapse from a huge pennant race lead over the New York Giants in 1951. I think Moby Dick would actually work, and I only mentioned it because one of the books I was readng was making references to Moby Dick, and that’s one classic book I’ve always wanted to read.

Anyway, today was an uninspiring and unmotivated day for me. Guess all I can do is try again tomorrow. Sorry, no blog tonight!

BJ: Moby Dick is one of my favorite books, you should definetly give it a shot.
Another favorite of mine if I may make a recommendation, is The Catcher In The Rye, not as long as Moby Dick if you’re looking for something a little shorter but still good.

Ghosted by JoshC @ 06/11/2008 12:15 AM EDT

I need to re-read Catcher in the Rye before I whole-heartedly recommend it. I was totally digging on it in the 10th grade, though.

But like you know, a decade can change things.

OH MY GOD, My High School Reunion is in TWO YEARS o_O

Neg, It ain’t no thang! I went to mine a couple of years ago and it was kind of cool. I was actually surprised at how many people didn’t show up. I kind of had a grand entrance. I got there right when they were having a raffle to win a gift card to Nordstrams, I walked in, signed in, picked up a ticket, and like 2 seconds later, won the raffle! I kind of wish I would have gotten in touch with the people putting it together and requested to just DJ the thing, cause I wasn’t too impressed with the DJ we had, and neither was anyone else. I almost wanted to go out to my car, get my gear, and get to work! But, there was this one cool part of it though. One of the chicks putting it together had a DVD made that was set to various songs that were popular when we were all in high school. It was basically just a compilation of pictures that appeared in the yearbooks and stuff that people had submitted. There was oddly quite a few of me in there (sometimes solo, sometimes part of a group). I thought it was odd cause while I had my small, core group of friends, I wouldn’t say I was exactly popular. Just kind of one of the weird, quiet, artistic guys that sat in the back, wore black all the time, and made sarcastic comments. Kind of like the male version of Ally Sheedy’s character in The Breakfast Club.

Wow, some things really do never change.

Hey, I got the thunderstorm I wanted! It’s been raining and thundering and lightening like crazy for the past few hours. I went out to eat tonight at Red Lobster with a friend and the power went out while we were there…several times. It was great. The first time it happened we heard some people working in the kitchen screaming, “Yes!.” Guess they thought that was their ticket out of there, but it came back on eventually. Made the night a lot more interesting though, dining in the dark for a while. Wow, I didn’t have to give up a toe or anything.

Ghosted by DC @ 06/11/2008 9:00 AM EDT

Josh: Just to let you know in case you thought this is the way my mind was set, but I know Catcher in the Rye has NOTHING to do with baseball despite the clever title. I will be honest and say that I actually knew nothing of its plot until I glanced through the Wikipedia entry just now. It almost sounds as though the plot is similar to “Last Exit to Brooklyn” or, in this case, “Last Exit to Brooklyn” is a remake of “Catcher in the Rye.” I did read through about half of “Last Exit to Brooklyn” a number of years ago but never all the way through.

Yeah, there’s so many classic books I’ve wanted to read but never motivated myself to do so, Moby Dick included. One of the most anticipated books I tried reading but never did is Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities.” Heck, every Christmas season I say to myself I’m going to read the original “Christmas Carol” story but never do. There are classics I have read mostly for school such as “Lord of the Flies”, “To Kill a Mockingbird” (twice), “1984″ (I want to re-read this one as well), and Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” My mom snet me her collection of Mark Twain books last time I was in Iraq and while I wanted to read them, I never got the chance to. I should make a list, like the one I have of movies I want to see, of books I want to read because I know how much I want to read the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and of course The Lord of the Rings series (I have never seen any of the movies because I want to read the books before, which is in quite contrast to how I usually see the movie before I read the books so I can mainly take the actors who played the characters and picture them in their roles in the book, and also because I know if I read the book first and then see the movie, I will be disappointed because I know the movie will leave out key scenes and change plot points that were important in the book). Oh heck, I wish I can get back into the Expanded Star Wars Universe because I know there are mnay stories that are ten times better than anything George Lucas’ movies have given us.

Okay, I need to take a shower and get ready for work. I should be back later so you can expect more than one post from me today unlike my sudden unmotivation I had yesterday.

Moby Dick is one of my favorites, but it is a struggle to get through at times. Feel free to skip the chapters on whale anatomy.

Also: “Hemp only can kill thee.” Awesome.

I highly recommend reading 1984 to anybody that hasn’t. While it can be dry at times it is an amazing social commentary. Way ahead of its time. Also, for those of you who haven’t read them C.S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy (Out of Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength) is really good. In my opinion much better than the Narnia books. Although in typical Lewis fashion they do include a LOT of religious imagery.

I LOVED “Catcher in the Rye” when I read it in 5th grade. One of the best books ever written.

Frankenstein is boring to read, actually.

I’ve actually been reading some of the new “Marvel Illustrated” comics based on classic books, mostly because I know I’ll probably never read the actual books or see the movies. I just finished “The Picture of Dorian Grey” yesterday and am currently reading “Moby Dick” in this form.

I definately remember Alf. I even had the Burger King puppet and the cake pan (which Matt did an article on years ago, I believe). But when I rewatched it when it played briefly on Nickelodeon a couple of years ago it definately doesn’t hold up.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 06/11/2008 11:27 AM EDT

Yeah, I recently rewatched Alf from the DVD and it definitely isn’t as great as it seemed.
I loved the Alf puppets from Burger King, they even came with those little plastic records of Alf singing.

drew do: trust me.. the series finale to Alf is still just as infuriating as it used be! – it’s really abrupt and disheartening.. – it’s almost as if the show’s producers were upset it was getting canceled so they just took a dump on the final script..

Ghosted by Review the World @ 06/11/2008 11:43 AM EDT

i really like Catcher In the Rye, too.. – i’ve read almost all of Salinger’s literary canon.. – i really enjoy his writing style, especially his attention to dialogue and details.. – but, my currently i’d have to say my favorite novel and author are On the Road and Kerouac..

dohopoki: in response to your comment way up above about the public library, mine is a godsend.. – according to their online database they currently have 12,066 DVDs available.. – they’ve got just about every major box-set, and get more and varied new releases every week then any major video store.. – needless to say, every single worker there knows me by first name! – i actually have to stop by later on my way to work and pick up some stuff..

Ghosted by Review the World @ 06/11/2008 11:59 AM EDT

Dang, I wish I had a library around here that was as awesome as that. When I was a kid, the library had all kinds of great Disney movies and stuff, so I have a lot of nice memories of getting movies from the library. And books as well XD I loved to read back then. Still do, but it’s hard for me to find books that I can actually enjoy.

Ghosted by Annette @ 06/11/2008 1:04 PM EDT

My library also offers a large selection of DVD’s, but I don’t go there because I’m horrible about getting to places to return things on time and I would end up paying so many fees that I’m better off just doing the netflix thing.

Ghosted by DC @ 06/11/2008 1:11 PM EDT

Yeah Review, it was very bad. And did anyone ever watch Alf’s Hit Talk Show on TV Land a few years ago. Who green lighted that piece of shit?

Ghosted by drew do @ 06/11/2008 2:49 PM EDT

You people are crazy…hot wings, crawfish, crab legs, and ribs are delicious…

drew do my sister in law lent me Lewis’ space trilogy. I read the first one, got halfway through the second, and just gave up. I couldn’t get into it.

I’m a big Stephen King fan myself…any Uncle Stevie fans? How ’bout Carl Hiaasen? Tim Dorsey? Anybody ever read Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas books? Good stuff.

The free seasoning packet for chex mix in the chex cereal box lives on people. For some random reason my best friend came home with a box of corn chex and it has a packet of old el paso taco seasoning for taco flavored chex mix. It just says taco seasoning on the packet but on the box it says it’s for taco flavored chex mix. I can take pics if you want me to.

I enjoyed Farenheit 451, because there are so many futuristic things that are not so futuristic. Like the shell like devices that are alway buzzing in everyone’s ears. Bluetooth anyone?
Another classic is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Maybe I like it ’cause I’m Irish…but the movie is a tearjerker as well, and stays very true to the book.

But you don’t have to take MY word for it…

Yeah Fahrenheit 451 was great. Yet another great book is Dune and its sequels. If you are even remotely a Sci Fi fan and haven’t read these, do yourself a favor and start. They are great (at least the ones actually written by Frank Herbert are).
