Chex Mix Seasoning Packet from 1990, very exciting.

Thanks largely to the gamut of '80s/'90s Chex Mix commercials starring the Peanuts gang, I've come to consider no winter holiday complete without a trough full of buttered cereal and snacks drenched in Worcestershire sauce. I can't pronounce "Worcestershire," but I enjoy the invitation to smear it on Chex cereal.

While the good people at Chex HQ would have me believe that this "Chex Mix" was a holiday staple since the cereal's inception, I give all credit to Chuck Brown and his crew, who always managed to make everything they cooked and ate look so ridiculously palatable. I remember one Peanuts cartoon where the gang went to France, and there was this twenty minute scene where the non-French speaking Charlie Brown failed in his attempt to order "one loaf de bread." I ate nothing but loafs de bread for the month following that.

Then there was the classic Peanuts Thanksgiving feast; a glorious spread of jelly beans and ice cream sundaes that charmed my ass straight to the grocery store so I could attempt to recreate it. I can only describe the Peanuts gang's influence over what we find appetizing as something metaphysical if not outright occult. There's no logic behind it. It just is.

Little did you know that everything above was merely an introduction to a photo of a sealed Chex Mix seasoning packet from 1990. I took the long way home on this one.

I can't remember exactly how it came to be in my possession, but I've got what's likely the last remaining Chex Mix "Instant Party Seasoning Pack" in existence -- a cereal "premium" stuffed inside Chex boxes in 1990. Like the Ninja Turtles "Honey Ooze" I wrote about recently, I refuse to open this seasoning pack due to the high probability that it's the last of its kind.

My desire to preserve history is pretty annoying in this case, as I've never been able to truly master cooking up a batch of Chex Mix. I tell people that I'm good at it, but I know the truth: My Chex Mix needs work. I don't know if the various salts, sugars and tamarinds inside this polyurethane wrapped foil pack of dust has gone sour in the eighteen some odd years since its creation, but for the ultimate result of the perfect batch of Chex Mix, the risk/reward ratio seems to lean towards the latter.

Maybe a Chex Mix seasoning pack wasn't the most action-packed blog topic that I could've chosen, but it felt like I was fated to do this. Not ten minutes after finding the pack in one of my many cardboard trunks, I stumbled upon a 1990 magazine ad promoting the promotion:

Lucy totally went pinky-up, so you knew this shit was serious.

I've forged batches of Chex Mix for every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday in recent memory, and eventually, I must assume that the law of averages will favor me with a bowl that tastes just right. Until such time, all I can really do is draw pictures of dinosaurs wearing sunglasses.

Happy SNT.

PS: In case you didn't catch the green note on the Trapper logo, we're set to move forward with X-E's Summer Megaparty as of July 1st. What this means: New blog posts everyday, at least for the month of July. Vegas odds are against this being a successful venture, but we can safely assume that there will be many, many more entries than usual. Feels like I should add an emoticon here, but I know it's kind of improper. Fuck it. :)

I am from Colorado and I thought Panara’s bagels were the best. Then I went to a local place called Gib’s NY Bagels which was started by a NYer. No other bagels hold a candle to these they are GREAT!

Killer Tomatoes will never hold up to the original. They shouldn’t even bother.

Drew do where are they located at? I’m always up for a good bagel!

Hey Review the World, when you get to the sub-castle before Bowser’s Castle in world 8, let me know how you beat it. I have no idea how to finish that level, I always have to skip it with a cloud.

It’s 95 degrees outside right now and I’m listening to
X-E’s Christmas Jukebox, just for kicks! Damn, I wish it would snow on the Island of Staten right now.

dohopoki: i definitely will! last night, i was on a roll, beating most of our levels in World 5.. – usually my wife is always the one who ends up defeating the Koopa kids.. – don’t know why i struggle so much against them.. – i’m more of a patient player, though, so i can usually get us through difficult boards if i keep at ‘em..

i just picked up Sonic Mega Collection Plus for the XBOX.. – 18 sonic games total.. – so after SMB3, we might start working on that next..

Yo all!

Remember when I told you all I had the USS Flagg still in my basement? Not anymore! Sold it to some dude in Las Vegas, and it’s on it’s way now. Care to guess how much it is to mail a USS FLagg in the box? $156! That’s 56 bucks more than the frigging thing COST in 1985! Holee Crap! Anyone mailed something more expensive, and if so, what the hell was it?

Chestnuts roasted by Terror Claws @ 06/09/2008 6:23 PM

I wish it was 95 degrees here, its cold today.
RTW, I believe you’ve convinced me to break out SMB3 after I’m finished with Earthbound, I forgot how fun that game is.

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 06/09/2008 6:24 PM

Hold on, The USS Flagg cost 100 bucks in 1985??
My dad was right, I had no concept of the value of a dollar.

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 06/09/2008 6:26 PM

It’s around 70 degrees here today, and I am enjoying it immensely. The only problem is it’s also dark and cloudy. Can’t win ‘em all, I guess.

Okay, back to listening to John Williams music.

JoshC: excellent! – we were looking for something fun to play and i broke out Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES.. – then it dawned on me that i don’t recall ever beating SMB3, yet alone without any whistles or cheats..

MaryJane: Yes, I am in Fort Hood. This has been my only duty station when I have not been deployed. I actually have thought of staying in TX after I get out, but I would be getting out of the Killeen area and move more north towards Dallas. Of course, I’m still a Chicagoan at heart and if I decide not to stay in TX, my mom’s always told me that I still have a room at my home in Sweet Home Chicago.

You want to know something weird? I’ve only been to San Antonio one time and that was a few years ago when my parents came down to see me before we deployed to Iraq the first time. We didn’t do much, but we did walk along the Riverfront which to me is nothing but a tourist trap. The reason I mention this is because I’m constantly being told how I should check out SeaWorld, especially since it’s free to military personnel. I can say the same thing about Sixth Street in Austin. Austin doesn’t impress me either because it looks like a bunch of cities I have been to recycled and Austin was the result. Anyway, I think I actually been to Sixth Street twice, and that was just to go to a Comedy Club that sort of reminded me of Second City back home in Chicago. I’m not the club/bar type of person. I’m very shy and don’t feel comfortable in those types of places. I guess the big thing about both Austin and San Antonio that doesn’t attract me to them is they’re not big sports towns, not like Dallas and Houston. Well, San Antonio’s got the Spurs, but I’m not a big basketball fan. I find myself more attracted to Dallas and Houston for the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, and Dallas Stars, but of course these are what I have down here which don’t hold a candle to the Cubs, White Sox, Blackhawks, and the best of them all…DA BEARS!!
Anyway, thanks for the response!

bj,
i’m supposed to be shampooing the carpet because the dog peed, but i stopped back here one last time. too funny, my husband grew up in freeport and warren, so he is a huge bears/cubs fan himself. which is fine with me because i could care less about the stupid packers…although i do root for the brewers. we get to the games where the cubs come up here, and they are awesome.

i honestly dont know why he would want to move back down there except he does have some family there and he wants a horse. he was in the 1st cav horse detachment at ft hood (only guy who
tried out that had never been on a horse) and he loved it. betcha miss chicago though…

I thought about buying one of those Sonic Mega Collections before but I know for a fact that there are not 18 Sonic games I want to play.

Come to Waco! Perfectly situated 100 miles from Austin and 100 miles from Dallas…

Today has been a particularly trying and upsetting day. I don’t usually vent, but I think I’ll have something up in my personal blog in a bit and hopefully that’ll be therapeutic.

In other news, dohopoki, are you sure you don’t want to play Sonic Drift? It’s one of many Sonic games I previously had no idea existed. It was for the Game Gear, and plays like dusty old game Pole Position but with Sonic and the gang. Of the games included, I think I’ve only ever played a couple of ‘em. That 10th anniversary MegaMan collection had peaked my interest, too.

AHH, I CAN NOT find Mario Kart Wii! It’s sold out EVERYWHERE ! I rented it again in the meantime until I can find it. I LOVE this game !=) I’m workin on unlocking some of the hidden stuff right now. I’m about halfway done.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 06/09/2008 8:34 PM

I haven’t played many of the new sonic games but Sonic Chronicles is looking really good.

Cameron: I’ve been to Waco a few times. It’s a nice place, and only about 30 miles north of Temple. I know there’s not much to Temple but I prefer it to Killeen any day! Of course the only reason Killeen, or for that matter Copperas Cove and Harker Heights as well, is because of Ft. Hood. Without the Army post, this area would turn into a ghost town in a matter of days. I definetly prefer the Temple Mall to Killeen Mall ANY DAY!

MaryJane: I was typing a response and going into detail about Chicago and my love for history of the city, but I hit something on my keyboard and it sent me to the main blog page and I LOST all my work! Oh well, perhaps this will give me inspiration to actually start up my blog. If that happens, I’ll be sure to post the link to my name because why else would I write one if I didn’t want anyone to read it? As I said before, I think the main reason I am the most inspired to write on here is I KNOW I’ll have some folks read my work!

BJ
Killeen is often referred to as “The Armpit of Texas.”

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 06/09/2008 8:49 PM

Hmm, I would think of it more as the navel of Texas being how it’s practically in the middle of the state! Removing it would be like removing belly button lint!
