05/17/2008: Chucky, Freddy, Cheese, Caviar, Soda, Mario.

I realize that blood atonement may be only acceptable way to pay for my non-blogging sins, but I don’t feel like bleeding.  Instead, an assortment of wacky shit intended to make your Saturday night 2% more interesting:

I’ve had my eye on this Child’s Play DVD box set for months, but despite the awesome spectacle of a three-dimensional Chucky cover, it’s a pretty lame set, cramming four movies on two DVDs and excluding the first film for what I assume to be some kind of rights issue that I can’t be bothered to research.

The upside is that the set’s been out for a while and has become cheap: 15 bucks gets you Child’s Play 2, Child’s Play 3, Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky.  That’s enough Chucky action to run a movie marathon from dusk till dawn, which is something I’d suggest if I thought I was among a larger group of people capable of watching that much Chucky.

I probably don’t need to tell you what this soda reminds me of, but for the sake of grabbing three errant hits from Google searches over the next year, I’m going to do it anyway: Crystal Pepsi.  Sierra Mist’s “Undercover Orange” (a Get Smart tie-in) is pretty much the son of Crystal Pepsi, hiding its flavor within a two-liter sea of totally clear cola/soda/pop.  I would’ve bought at least three more bottles if giant Steve Carell heads weren’t all over them.  Nothing against Steve Carell; it’s just that I don’t think his head belongs on soda bottles.  We all have our quirks.

Actually, the orangey, lemony-limey flavors of “Undercover Orange” are far better suited to this all-clear package than Pepsi ever was.  I’ve been struggling for the last ten minutes to come up with some reason as to why that is.  It must be residual effects from seeing so many Starburst commercials displaying pieces of fruit all aglow in the wash of splashing water.  I guess Sierra Mist’s “Undercover Orange” looks a lot like the splashing water from all the old Starburst commercials.  Chicken Doritos.

The natural follow-up to a story about clear soda is something on ancient Freddy Krueger toys, so, here.  This Nightmare on Elm Street “Scare Stick” was only partly meant to frighten the holy fuck out of everyone around it.  I’m pretty sure that its more marketed purpose was that of a trick-or-treat signal light deal, as Freddy’s eyes light up through the mystical powers of two AA batteries, and shine brightly enough to have helped any jaywalking trick-or-treater avoid getting smacked by a befuddled driver on Halloween night.

The Scare Stick was created in 1991 by a company called Marty Toy, which is only slightly better as a name for a toy company than it would be for a person.  I’d let myself buy Freddy Krueger junk from a place called Marty Toy, but I don’t think I could ever stay friends with a person named Marty Toy.  It’s misshapen rocks on the tongue.

The choice phrasing on the cardboard package gives me an idea, and it’s got less to do with Freddy Krueger and more to do with the “Impact” font and a picture of a wide-eyed cat.  But then, I’m behind on my memes.  Full stop.

You might be wondering what the Scare Stick can do.  I’ve decided to convey its purpose it two ways.  The first is with the animated GIF below.  The second is with this YouTube video, featuring my attempt to make the Freddy Krueger Scare Stick beep the lyrics to Frère Jacques.

I kind of love this absolutely pointless thing, with its copious amounts of sci-fi laser beam chirps and psychedelic eye-flashing.  It’d be impressive enough with a lamer character, but adding these traits to Freddy Krueger’s disembodied head makes the Scare Stick something I want to make sweet, sweet love to in the back of a funky van.

Moving on, I picked up Kraft’s new Macaroni & Cheese Crackers, arriving in both cheddar and white cheddar varieties, and looking something like this.  It’s an amazing idea, but the execution is terrible.  I can name thirty brands of cheese crackers, or maybe seven at least, and these would likely end the list if I was organizing by favorites first.  It’s not that they’re actively bad…they just aren’t very good, and they don’t taste any more like mac & cheese than any other big brand cheese cracker does.

Also, they’re not very…pretty.  I don’t know.  Cheesy junk food has an unspoken sense of aesthetic value, and in that regard, these are appalling.  Between the shape and mouthfeel, they’re more reminiscent of a generic brand picked up from an outrageously ethnic dollar store.  I like the way the boxes look, but since I’m only going to allow random box-love one instance of purchase-justification in each blog entry, these can’t compete with the Chucky DVD jacket.  Fuck you, crackers!

Oh, and then there’s these.  I still haven’t played the new Mario Kart game, but I bought it, and when I bought it, Toys “R” Us had a trough full of these cute Super Mario figures right near the checkout line.  Even at the fairly ridiculous price of four bucks per pack, I couldn’t resist.  I especially like the Goomba/Bob-omb two-pack, mainly because they’re the only figures in the series that don’t look exactly like the Mario toys I got for free inside Happy Meals during the early ’90s.

Finally, fish eggs.  The green stuff is wasabi caviar, and I must suggest that you try it at your earliest convenience.  For the record, the smaller fish eggs shown here — usually called “tobiko” — have virtually no flavor, but share a chewing consistency with bubblewrap.  That’s the selling point.  If you order the wasabi version, though, you’ll get it in an alluring jade green shade, and you’ll get it hot.  Every would-be baby fish pops in an explosive display of horseradishy heat, turning any visit to the sushi bar into a fist-pounding-table adventure.  If you’re grossed out by this, be glad that I forgot to take a picture of the oyster shooters we had last weekend.

This is your Saturday Night Thread.  Hope you’re here for it.

I love the Child’s Play movies. Chucky rules!

Alright, I’m going to go get liquored up! Happy SNT to all!

I kinda like the Mac & Cheese crackers. They’re like Cheez-Its except in tube form. I bought my Chucky DVD and had to go back later to get the first Child’s Play. What a pain, but the first DVD comes with one of those images on the front (are they considered holograms?) that looks like it moves when you turn it.

Totally worth the wait, as usual!  Now I’m off to a friend’s house for a night of nachos, beer and Scrabble.  Happy SNT to all! :-D

Child’s Play 2 used to be one of my favorite movies ever.  I don’t think I can say that it still is, but man, I LOVED it.  Before the last mompop video store closed down around where I lived, I bought the jack-in-a-box themed standee for ten bucks and dragged it back home, wrecking it more and more with every street crossed.  By the time I got it there, there wasn’t much left.

I, personally, still demand blood, so there.

Next time I get sushi, I’m demanding some wasabi caviar.

My highest comment yet!!

Posted by Ryan @ 05/17/2008 7:40 PM EDT

It’s funny how movies that we really liked as kids turn out to be so different when we watch them as adults. A few months back I watched Cujo again and it was almost comical. It freaked me out as a kid, but now the dog isn’t even remotel scary. But I still got a kick out of watching it.

Alright, I should be back around later to read the SNT shenanigans. Have fun everyone!

Posted by DC @ 05/17/2008 7:42 PM EDT

When I popped my DVD in I hadn’t watched Child’s Play 2 since like 4th grade and I was surprised at how vividly I remembered it all from the plastic bag scene to getting extra body limbs shoved up his ass. Great stuff.

Posted by Mystie @ 05/17/2008 7:42 PM EDT

Great varietal post. I’m a sucker for cool packaging on DVDs. It probably still won’t get me buying Chucky movies, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

Those Kraft Dinner Crackers are crazy. I have a thing against Kraft Dinner, and it’s partially the shape. I don’t know why, but elbow macaroni always seems more disgusting than say a pasta seashell, even know they taste the same.
On the note of unusual foodstuffs, I have a fascination with the different and yet similar foods between us here in Canada, and the US (and the UK as well). For the first time in over three years I got down across the border the other day, and had some fun getting American food.

The best find was Kellogg’s Indiana Jones cereal. Love the full box artwork. Chocolate cereal with marshmallow shapes. The Indy’s hat shape is funny, because it looks more like Henry Jones’ hat. I also tred Red Vines for the first time. I love Twizzlers so I was expecting Red Vines to seem omre plasticy, but they aren’t. I liked them, and they’re just different from Twizzlers in their own unique way. I picked up the requisite vanilla cream soda. I got IBC brand, but I had many to choose from. Why do we not have vanilla cream soda here in Canada? We have the pink, but it’s more like cough syrup. I remember once we had a limited time only A&W vanilla kind, but alas that was years ago and was very limited. I also saw (but didn’t get) a Pepsi owned brand of Apple flavoured pop. I can’t remember the name now. Started with an M and looked good. I also grabbed one of those big bags of Mint Indiana Jones M&Ms. Those are awesome. We have them here, but only in the tiny snack sized bags, and they’re hard to come by.

Is there food that anyone in the US comes to Canada to buy, that you don’t have there? Maybe our kind of Smarties, or Pilsbury Pizza Pops or Hawkins Cheezies?

Wasabi caviar? Hmmmmm….I suppose given enough sake before hand I’d be up to try it. And I agree seems kind of silly to have all the Child’s Play movies except the first in a set. Oh well, Happy SNT all!

…but I don’t think I could ever stay friends with a person named Marty Toy.  It’s misshapen rocks on the tongue.

So, I guess I should have ditched my name a year ago when I wanted to, to you know, something that I don’t hate as well.

I think I played Mario Kart Wii for about 10 hours straight when I bought it earlier this week.  The wheel is definitely a nice novelty and handles pretty decently….that damned Rainbow Road keeeps killin me though!  I’m debatin whether to drink some beer tonight or not…at any rate happy SNT everyone!

Posted by phunqsauce @ 05/17/2008 7:56 PM EDT

CMJ- The apple-flavored drink you are referring to is called Manzanita(spanish for “little apple”).  I recognized it from the description because they sell it at my local supermarket, along with a number of other sodas with Spanish names.  I’ve never tried it myself.

After much lurking and the occasional post, I am breaking my vow of SNT silence. The Scare Stick is a thing of beauty, and my life has been changed forever because of it. Now I know what an epiphany is. Happy SNT all.

Not to nit pick, but don’t you mean that it reminds you of Crystal by Pepsi, rahter than Crystal Pepsi.  The Denver market was a test market back in 1992, and Crystal Pepsi was actually a cola flavored drink.  I think it was closer to New Coke or Coke II.

Posted by Dave @ 05/17/2008 8:01 PM EDT

Dave: Was talking in terms of color rather than flavor, but I’m happy that you made a Crystal by Pepsi reference. :)

Posted by Matt @ 05/17/2008 8:03 PM EDT

The Freddy Stick sounded more like “Jingle Bells” than “Frere Jacques.”

Posted by JLAJRC @ 05/17/2008 8:04 PM EDT

Oh, I should have commented on Mario Kart Wii.  I’ve played it a bit — enough to open all the tracks — and while I like it a lot, I still prefer Double Dash.  I don’t regret buying it as it is still a lot of fun, but I do miss having the second character on the kart and the item management that comes with that.  The game also feels a little off concerning just how little control you have when you are playing on 150cc.  Whether you win or lose just feels sort of random.  I know Mario Kart, as a series, has always been about ‘fun’, not realistic racing, but I feel like they maybe swung the balance a little too far in the wrong direction this time.  Not huge issues though.

Still I do think using the Wii wheel works much better than I had anticipated.  I didn’t pick up a second when I purchased the game because I thought there was a pretty good chance it would feel too ‘gimmicky’ and that we would go back to using our wavebirds.  Well, I ordered a second wheel from amazon a few days ago as both the lady and I have become pretty accustomed to it.  There is a bit of a learning curve, but it is fairly rewarding when you start to get it down.

Oh, phunqsauce, I agree with you… the new Rainbow Road kicked my ass.  Badly.

Posted by Magic Toy @ 05/17/2008 8:05 PM EDT

*settles in front of ‘puter for the night*…ah some good ole SNT!!!!

I laughed so hard at Freddy singing that I peed a little!

CMJ the soda is called Manzanita del sol we have a huge Mexican population in the area, and apparently this flavor is a big hit with them.

And oh lovely…Dottie Jean kept getting her rawhide chew stuck in the carpet just now…which then yanks up about a football field’s length of yarn and fibers..and she continues to pull and it unravels even more….how to explain this to the landlord….oh joy….at least its right by the computer table so its hidden kinda…

Oh, and I just got Strawberry Milkshake creme flavored Oreos!!! They are limited edition…um…they taste kinda like neopolitan icecream…what with the chocolate oreo cookie and  all.

I love Mario Kart for the Wii!  I’m pretty horrible at most video games, but I’m good at Mario Kart.  That makes me think that it could be a pretty easy game overall.  I’ve not unlocked Rainbow Road yet, though.  I might be speaking too soon.

Posted by Karen @ 05/17/2008 8:36 PM EDT

Ah, wasabi…what’s better than a nostril-scouring cloud of horseradish fumes searing the hair in your nose and forcing tears from you eyes? I never did get on board with the whole sushi concept, but a big enough pile of wasabi and a large can of Sapporo is enough to keep me entertained through any number of trips to the local raw-fish bar with my wife.

Matt
Very well then.  I never got to try the Crystal by Pepsi flavor, but I drank tons of of the original flavor, as well as tons of OK soda.  Why can’t the good ones stay around longer?!?
Thanks for a big post.  Is there going to be a main page update?  Why all love you and your busy-ness anyway.

Of the new food items everyone’s mentioned, the only ones I’ve seen are the Undercover Orange Sierra Mist and the Indiana Jones Cereal. In fact, I just sold the first Undercover Orange 12-packs we got at the grocery store where I work today. All I saw were the boxes, though, so I had no idea they were clear. I liked Crystal Pepsi when it was out and always wondered if they’d revive the concept, given how poor sales for Crystal Pepsi were.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention the Indiana Jones Cereal. I’ve seen that in the store and elsewhere in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area for a couple of weeks now.

No comments on the horror stuff. I HATE horror movies or anything horror-related. I get queasy easily. I love the Mario figures, though. I may have to look for those. I want a Princess Peach figure, and that Bob-omb/Goomba combo is freakin’ cute.

Okay so a few weeks back my friend is all, “Come to my baptismal, I’m thanking you in my speech!” and it’s supposed to be tomorrow. I called her yesterday to get the details and she’s like, “Oh yeah it’s at 10:45 out in the middle of bumblefuck, you don’t have to come if you don’t want to.” I told her to send me a message then with the address so I can GPS it, and so far this hasn’t happened. Should I just assume I can sleep in tomorrow? I haven’t been to church in over a decade, anyway, I don’t think I even have anything to wear unless Jesus has given the thumbs up to black dresses and hoochie boots.

Posted by Mystie @ 05/17/2008 9:24 PM EDT

Skip it.  Baptisms aren’t very exciting.

Posted by Matt @ 05/17/2008 9:27 PM EDT

Mystie
I say skip.  As a church-goer who hasn’t been able to go because of my work schedule, I would say if you haven’t been to church in 10 years, you’ll probably feel out of place.  Make sure you buy and send a card though.
The one reason that I WOULD go is if there was going to be a really fancy meal at the reception.  Otherwise, skipper.

Posted by Dave @ 05/17/2008 9:28 PM EDT

is it just me, or if the Sierra Mist is lemon lime with a ‘hint’ of mandarin orange, wouldn’t it be clear ANYWAY? like Sprite? or 7up? aren’t lemon lime drinks ALWAYS clear? i’m freakin out over here…

Ooh. I’ve got Boy George “The Crying Game” coming up in the playlist.  I’ve always debated whether or not, after 15 years, should I give away the secret of the crying game to my listeners?

Posted by Dave @ 05/17/2008 9:31 PM EDT

Most sodas start off clear and get dye added in to be attractive to the buyer.  It’s the same reason we tend to buy dog food if it comes shaped like cute little t-bone steaks.

Posted by Matt @ 05/17/2008 9:31 PM EDT

Mystie  Just being there for your friend is good enough…Jesus doesn’t judge appearances. Not to sound preachy or anything….

Why dontcha wear your goucho pants you bought at Lane Bryant outlet from your blog?  I think it was the pin stripe mafia outfit or something?

Posted by mandy_Reeves @ 05/17/2008 9:34 PM EDT

I just feel like if it were specifically ORANGE flavored soda, then yeah clear orange soda would be cool…but it’s lemon lime soda with a ’splash’ of Mandarin Orange…so it would be clear anyway? …my mind is boggled

I love how i’m Canadian and had to go back and change ‘flavoured’ and ‘pop’ to ’soda’ ;)

So the cheese in the martini really works? I’ve stared those olive jars down at the booze shop a bunch of times but couldn’t wrap my mind around it. On refresh, I see my questions were somewhat founded :)
ella, I kinda thought the same thing about the “splash” of mandarin but I’ve warmed up to the idea and I’d like to pick up a bottle. Getting it in cans would seem to rob the gimmick of impact.

Chicken Doritos…what?  Do those exist?  Was there going to be another article???  Also, did you ever have New York Seltzer?  It was a whole gamut of flavored soft drinks in “crystal pepsi” form.  They didn’t really do any “pepsi” type flavor, but “Almond Cream” tasted a lot like Dr. Pepper.

Squee: Hi!  How ya doing?  I’m half-crocked so I figured I’d say hello before confirming: The cheese sort of works.  Actually, it definitely works…it’s just that the blue cheese they shove into olives tastes/feels more like hardened EZ Cheez.

I originally speculated that the SNT’s title “Chucky, Freddy, Cheese, Caviar, Soda, Mario” was some kind of code. Anyone want to venture a guess?

Those Mario toys…awesome. I must have them! Especially the Paragoomba/Bob-omb 2-pack, I want them to fight my Meta Knight figure from Nintendo World.

Something I want in this world: Poseable Kirby figures. Hell, I dreamt up of an action figure line for all the Smash Bros gang, but then I kept wondering how we’d integrate some of them in action figure form (namely Kirby & Jigglypuff), and then I thought up of Final Smash variants, but many of them probably wouldn’t make the transition very easily itself.

Speaking of Kraft Dinners…everytime I hear that phrase I’m reminded of that great “Kids in The Hall” sketch where two of the guys are poor street performers who can only afford to eat nothing but Kraft Dinner & Heinz Ketchp. And then they win a lifetime supply of both of those things due to eating so much of it. Good times.

Reading comments like these remind me how lucky I am to live less than 10 minutes away from an actual, fully functional drive-in.  Also when I was growing up I was lucky enough to live in a small town that had drive-in of its own.  Basically I’ve lived my entire life with a drive-in available, even when I didn’t take advantage of it.

I’m still smiling over the Transformers and Live Free or Die Hard double-feature I saw there last summer.  God I love drive-ins.

Actually, that Sierra Mist Undercover tastes like a Sunkist Orange Soda. I wasn’t that impressed with it.

This must be “Steve Carrell” day for me, as besides Sierra Mist Undercover, I just watched “Evan Almighty” on HBO (it sucked), and he’s hosting the season finale of SNL tonight.

Proof that I should be in bed is above.

I left of the “do” and “is” in those lyrics.

I enjoy sleeping but I do resent that it’s one-third of my life. Couldn’t there be some sort of IRON MAN-esque battery created for our brains? Sleep is a time vampire, sucking away at my youth.

The first Child’s Play is the only movie in the series not owned by Universal Pictures.  Hence the weird incompleteness of that box set up there.  And I’m sure that was a mystery everyone was absolutely dying to have solved.

Oh, yes, Manzanita. Thanks mandy_Reeves. It sounds good. I like the Jones Soda green apple flavour. Speaking of Jones, the blue bubblegum flavour is terrible in my opinion. We can get flats of Jones pop here at Costco, and every year they chnage the flavour set, but there is always that blue bubblegum. I wish they’d put Fufu Berry in the set. I enetered their photo label contest and my photo of my dog swimming underwater was chosen to be on Fufu Berry bottles. They sent me a bunch of the labels, but I never saw an actual bottle since we don’t have Fufu flavour around here.

I’m going to take myself to see Iron Man in an hour. I’m excited. It wasn’t on my list of ones to see at the theatre, but I’ve never heard a bad review yet so now I’m interested.

So….went to Taco bell tonight….and frikkin they have like a 79 cent 89 cent and 99 cent menu now!

Huge portions for that price I must say!  we got triple layer nachos
Big taste soft taco
cheesey beef burrito
cheesy fiesta potatoes
2 crunch taco’s and a mango strawberry Fruitista….all for ….are you ready?

8 DOLLARS!

cripes!  turns out what with the shitty economy, they had to lower prices.

Sorry I’m a little late in the SNT thread but I actually got out of the room today and off-post!  I went to a friend’s house who invited me to a little cookout.  We were deciding what movie to watch off of InDemand and the only one that was of any interest to me that I haven’t seen was “The Golden Compass.”  I can’t comment on how the movie was because I think I got about as much as half of it in because my buddy’s two kids were making ruckus and distracting me.  I see it as a cross between Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia.  I didn’t care much for the ending, but I did think the scene where the one polar bear bites off the jawbone of another polar bear to be pretty cool, but that’s about it.

It’s funny how everyone is mentioning going to see Iron Man this weekend.  I myself am planning on seeing at an early show tomorrow, and before reading tonight’s posts, I thought I was the last person in the country to not have seen the movie.  Well, I’m sure it’ll be good, and since I have never read the comic, I can’t comment on how much they changed the storyline in the movie to what the original comic book depicted in the beginning.

Has anyone here tried Keebler’s Cheesecake Flavored Dipping Delights Sandwich Cookies?  Found these at one of our Shoppettes on post.  They’re pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary and they don’t taste very much like cheesecake, but definetly a good snack.  I don’t know about anyone else, but it seems I can never eat a sandwich cookie without first breaking apart the two cookies and eating the cream first.  I figure that since it’s supposedly sacreligious to eat an Oreo without pulling them apart and licking the cream inside, ALL sandwich cookies need to be pulled apart before eaten as well.  Thankfully I have not heard any thunder going off when I eat a sandwich cookie whole, but I have a feeling it’s just a matter of time before I find myself eating a sandwich cookie whole and then the rumbling starts.  You can only test God’s patience for so long before Vengeance will be paid!

Anyway, not much else for me to comment here.  I need to make a list of all these foods you all are mentioning, especially the Indiana Jones cereal and Sierra Mist soda.  Haven’t found them on-post so I’ll be sure that while I’m off-post tomorrow, I’ll head over to Wal-Mart and look for that stuff.  Basically I’m up for anything Indy-related since the movie comes out in five days.

Oh, and before I forget, Matt, good try on making Freddy’s eyes sing even if it wasn’t a success.  The first thing I noticed right away on your shelf was the E.T. figure, and then I saw the vitamin bottle so it reminded me of the E.T. vitamins blog you did some time ago.  I’m assuming the Hi-C pack is Ecto Cooler.  Probably the last pack ever to exist so I take that if the world ever came to an end and you could take only one item with you into a bomb shelter, Slimer would win over E.T.  Anyway, that’s all for my rambling.  Guess I’ll start watching SNL and get about half-way through before I fall asleep.  It’s bound to happen!!!!

Posted by BJ @ 05/18/2008 12:10 AM EDT

Sorry for the double post but since Mandy mentioned Taco Bell, I have to ask this question.  Is Taco Bell the only place you can get Mountain Dew’s Baja Blast?  I have never seen it in any supermarket or in any other restaurant that sells Pepsi brand sodas (the only other one I admit I know about it is KFC and I have not seen Baja Blast sold there)?  Well, I guess if I did know of another place, it would stop me from going to Taco Bell because the only soda I ever order from that place is the Baja Blast.

Oh, and before I forget and end up typing a triple post, I must mention that I got some Nesquick Strawberry syrup.  The only problem every time I make myself some Strawberry milk, I feel like I invaded a medicine cabinet.  First when I squirt the syrup onto a spoon, it looks like cherry cough syrup.  Then I mix it in with the milk and it looks like I have Pepto Bismol.  All I need now is for the milk in its white state to start appearing to me as Mylanta.  You know, come to think of it….NO, shouldn’t think about that!!!!  Okay, if not Mylanta, then milk will constantly remind me to the Milk Bar in Clockwork Orange!  Okay, post over!  I’m freaking myself out now!!!!

Mighty Mugs are some awesome shit.

Anyone who wants a Mario figure should check out this figure. It’s like a little more than a foot tall. They have Super Mario with his normal colored outfit, but I got the Fire Mario variant because I had to be “that guy”. This thing is great, and it has really clean paint lines too, which surprised me. I got a wierd little super deformed “Choro Q” (Penny Racers in America) Rodimus Prime from the same site, and it was pretty cool too.

IT WAS ASS-SOME!

Posted by Mystie @ 05/18/2008 12:43 AM EDT

It was hot today where I live, but now it’s getting cool.  I don’t want to stay home, but all my friends are going to a bar and I don’t want to do that either.  It looks like I’m going to stay home and watch Cloverfield.  Not sure if I’ll be into it–I guess I’ll find out.  A couple of things first.

Does the Manzanita (sp?) soda taste like carbonated apple juice?  I’ve had Mexican-made apple soda and it tasted like carbonated apple juice.  It’s not bad, but I can’t say I’d go out of my way to get it.  I think I’d rather have Jones green apple soda, which is kind of hard to find where I live.

As for the yellow background…I’m not sure if it fits the design of the blog.  But on the other hand the light yellowish-cream color is easier on my eyes than plain white.  If you do go for it, please style the text and input boxes so they’ll go along with the rest of the design.

Finally, someone mentioned Canadian foods Americans would want.  What are Canadian Smarties like?  I’ve heard they’re supposed to be chocolate candies similar to M&Ms.  Are they similar, better, worse, or incomparable?

Posted by Astro Zombie @ 05/18/2008 12:51 AM EDT

I’m here, I’m here. Been fighting off sickness all week so I just woke up.

I liked the yellow-ish ness, it was easier on my eyes but I’m probably only noticing that because… I just woke up.

Astro: Still a work in progress.  I think I’ll likely end up choosing a color that’s halfway between that and this.

So, I’ve been watching the season finale for SNL tonight.  It has been pretty damn good.  I hope I am not the only one watching this.

Oh, and I meant to mention it earlier… hope kb is having a hell of a time watching The Cure at the All State Arena tonight.  Even though I’ve always sort of liked The Cure, I really started to appreciate them a few years ago due to befriending a girl at work.  She had a mini-poster of Robert Smith at her desk that led to a lot of funny conversations between the two of us.

Just got back. Iron Man was excellent. I like that level of comic book hero movie. Not too campy (Mr.Freeze anyone?) and not too dark (wondering about the new Batman movie).

Hey Astro Zombie, Canadian Smarties are simialr to M$Ms. candy shell with chocolate. They’re a but flatter in shape, and the shell is a bit thicker. When I was little I liked them more, possibly because I was attracted to the pink and purple colours that M&Ms didn’t have, but now I think with the thicker shell, they’re a bit chalky tasting, so I prefer M&Ms.
Here we call American Smarties “Rockets.

Posted by CMJ @ 05/18/2008 3:56 AM EDT

I’m going to bed with anime music on the brain.  (And probably for the next week or so.)

Also tonight I watched half of Temple of Doom and Last Crusade.  Surprised I haven’t seen as much speculation on the new Jones movie.  What do you guys think of bringing him back after such a long time?  Half of me says they should give Indy a rest and actually come up with some new ideas, half is intrigued and interested as to how a senior citizen Harrison Ford will be able to pull this off.  And of course, the latter half wins.  I’ll probably see it on Friday afternoon since I work a half-day on Fridays.

It is freaking HOT on the west coast!  It got up to 97 here in San Diego on Friday.  But stranger is that it’s hot further north.  Even in Portland, OR it’s been in the 90s.  I don’t want to imagine what it’s like in Vegas or Phoenix (although they’re used to this).

Posted by The Real Andrew @ 05/18/2008 4:54 AM EDT

It’s almost 5 AM where I am.  Anybody else up?  Watched Cloverfield.  Didn’t expect much, but enjoyed it more than I thought I would have.

Hey CMJ, thanks for shedding light on Canadian Smarties.  Here’s something I wonder: I’ve heard of the varieties of Kit Kats that are made and sold outside the US (ie, green tea, banana, orange, curry, raspberry, among many others).  Are any of those sold in Canada, or do you have the same (limited) varieties as the US?

Matt: I think a color somewhere between the shade of yellow on that test page and white would be a good choice.

I typed “sad” into the search function of the main page and got the Baleen whale artwork article, good times.

Posted by mrjayberry @ 05/18/2008 8:47 AM EDT

You know what’s always bothered me? That search bar says to search for anything and has Inspector Gadget right next to it but searching for “Inspector Gadget” -blog, brings back 4 articles and none of them actually about inspector gadget.

Also

Colgate has for years tried to replicate the success of other franchises’ mascots, never quite capturing the same effect as Domino’s “Noid” or the Energizer Bunny.

Ah, “The Spot.” The small red creatures in cool shades helped freshen up 7-UP terminally drab ad campaigns with goofy adventures and episodic commercials. I wouldn’t quite put him on the level of Domino’s “Noid” or the “Energizer Bunny,” but hey, they were certainly higher up on the totem pole than Little “Pizza Pizza” Caesar.

What began only as a way to better differentiate Cheetos from the competition ultimately evolved into an all-out pop culture icon. Chester wasn’t the Noid, or the Energizer Bunny, or even the dude from Little Caesar’s.

I think there’s a fourth instance of this too, I think it actually contradicts one of these 3 but I forget where it is.

And the quest for Ivysaur and the quest for Venusaur both make rare mentions of cranberry. Until Jones Sodas started getting reviewed, they were the only two articles on the site that said cranberry.

For whomever asked earlier,

I am thinking the new Indiana Jones will be crappy. Yeah, I’m going to see it, etc. but I think that between (A) Geriatric Jones (B) 19 year hiatus (C) STAR WARS Episode I (D) MOST OF THE PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL IS EVOKING THE OLD MOVIES. “Hey, remember when RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK came out? Man, wasn’t that a great movie?” The action figures, fast food stuff, etc. is all focused on the old stuff. It’s a lot to overcome.

I could be wrong but…

Posted by Matt @ 05/18/2008 12:23 PM EDT

Like the color but doesn’t lend itself to the design. Unless you put a graph background to it.

Posted by dohopoki @ 05/18/2008 12:38 PM EDT

What I’m not looking forward to with the Indy movie is how Shia LeBouf is used.  Is he a sidekick?  A cliched son Indy never knew?  Someone to annoy the hell out of me?  He seems like a ploy to get a younger audience, which leads me to agree with Manimal, in that maybe the new movie can’t really stand on its own two feet.  Why does George Lucas hate us so much?

Posted by FyarlGirl @ 05/18/2008 12:47 PM EDT

I agree with you, Manimal…it’s probably going to suck ass.  But…I’ll probably go see it anyway.  Sigh.

Anyway, last night I was eating pizza, drinking coffee, and eating donuts with my best friend until around 12:00.

And before that, I spent like six hours timing the subtitles on some raw anime.  Tedious, but strangely entertaining, especially when you get to make the characters say dumb random shit.

Matt, I think using something other than white is a good idea, but the peach seems to clash a bit with the gray/red theme.  Unfortunately, at the moment I can’t think of anything better that would work with the existing color scheme.

Posted by Annette @ 05/18/2008 1:02 PM EDT

Re: Color, let’s let it digest for a day and then see how it’s feeling. :)  I’d keep tweaking but unfortunately I have to edit six graphics and twelve pages each time I change the color.  My argument would be that clashing fits the theme of the site.  A bad argument, yes.  Actually, I want to see how it looks on other computers, because it’s a REALLY minute change on mine.

I haven’t seen Iron Man either. :/

Posted by dohopoki @ 05/18/2008 1:14 PM EDT

I’m really going for readability.  The white can be really draining, especially when there’s a lot of empty areas.  For some reason the color change is more noticeable within the comments than on the blog main page, where I think it works a bit better.

Posted by Matt @ 05/18/2008 1:23 PM EDT

The only big problem that is going to come out of this color thing is going to be all the newbies who stop by asking, “BTW, your color is messed up” or “Is your color off-white or is my monitor off?” etc.

I don’t usually go to the movies but I did see IRON MAN. Thumbs up.

Finally, yeah, ol’ G. Lucas did mention an Indy spin-off with Shia in the lead.

I love RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and the other 2 are staples from my childhood. I just don’t know why this was necessary but whatever.

Why another Indy movie?  Simple.  George Lucas wants more money.  (As if he didn’t already have enough.)

I think I’m actually more upset at the way he continues to run Star Wars further and further into the ground.  Have you guys heard about the new Clone Wars thing?  I might be the only one that thinks it’s a horrible idea, but I’m sick of all this prequel crap.  Are Luke, Leia, Han, and Lando not cool enough anymore or something?

Oh, as for the color, it’s very very subtle and I think it’s growing on me.

Posted by Annette @ 05/18/2008 2:13 PM EDT

Hey Astro Zombie. Wow, no, we don’t have any of those varieties of Kit Kat here. We just have normal, Chunky and maybe a peanut butter one, if it’s still around. BUt I just looked up teh Kit Kat Wikipedia, and apparently in recent years Kit Kat has become popular in Japan, owing to the fact that the name translates closely to something like, “You are a winner” and they’re the ones who are making the unusual flavours. Soybean, green tea, caramel with salt, apple.
I notice in the USA Kit Kat is made by Hershey and has different ingredients than our Netsle made ones. Apparently there’s a different taste.

Posted by CMJ @ 05/18/2008 2:28 PM EDT

Annette I agree with you on both poins, Lucas is gonna milk both franchises for all their worth. I wish he’d just leave well enough alone but we’ve already seen that’s not gonna happen.
I guess we lucked out though, I read an article that Lucas’s original idea for Indy 4 was “Indiana Jones and the Sucker Men from Mars”. I wish I was kidding but I’m not.

Yep, I read it in an interview that Lucas and Speilberg did for Entertainment Weekly. Lucas wanted to keep with the ’50’s serial idea and wanted it to ba all about aliens. Fortunately Spielberg and Ford both told him no.

And Doho, it is indeed Sucker.

Posted by Greg @ 05/18/2008 6:40 PM EDT

Doho and Kid Nicky,
I don’t think it’s so much hate for Shia as much as it is the role he is playing (or may play). Think of him as the usurper to the established brand name; he’s the potential Barack Obama to Harrison Ford’s Indiana.
Yeah, Ford is older, etc. but that’s the Indy we have to go with and not some Johnny Come Lately who MAY BE trying to spin off.

I don’t blame Shia, I blame G. Lucas (who I really think is losing it BTW). But again, I could be wrong…

Posted by The Manimal @ 05/18/2008 7:45 PM EDT

No Manimal I think your right, I think Lucas has had so many people kiss his butt for so long that he thinks he’s entitled to do whatever the hell he wants nowadays.

Posted by Dan @ 05/18/2008 7:54 PM EDT

Manimal:
I dig what you are saying but I hold out hope. Lucas has sold out (except for episode III which was great in my book) but Spielberg has always been great.

I don’t hate on Shia just yet. I am trying to stay in a young “Indiana Jones the series” state of mind. Thought I would hate them initially but they were actually pretty good.

Saucer Men from Mars?  To quote “The Thing”; “Oh, you have got to be fucking kidding me.”

Of course we should’ve seen it coming once the Ewoks bounced onto the screen.  (Although I actually like that song they do at the end (same with Lapti Nek), and the omission of it in the Special Edition is another reason why I no longer trust George Lucas.)

Well, my opinion of Shia is he seems to take his work seriously, got a big future and watching him in interviews I think he has a fresh genuineness that you don’t see in many actors. A rare genuineness that you only see every so often such as in say a Harrison Ford or a Sean Connery. See where I’m going with this? Before Lucas said squat, as soon as I saw Shia in the movie right there with Indy, it smacked me in the head that it was obvious what was wanting be done.

He might be young, he’s younger than me but in another 19 years Shia will only be 40. He’s got a lot of time to usurp some rolls.

i like the new cake color!

and i loved getting a small dose of halloween in may!

and once i made my dad turn the car around so i could go back and pull a big cardboard “evita” standee from the garbage in front of a small video store. not the same as chucky, but for me it meant the world! and it didn’t smell like garbage for that long =)

Wow, the last time I heard the phrase “Fuck you, crackers” some friends and I were being chased.

I can’t WAIT to see Indy.
I really can’t.
I fucking LOVE Indy.
Okay, well… I love Harrison Ford and Indy is a pretty hot role for ‘im, even if he is old.

And I agree about Shia- I’ve seen some promotional stills of him on a motorcycle that look straight-up like Marlon Brando in “The Wild One” and THAT’S going to be some badass shit if he goes on his Own Thing - “Mutt Williams and the Shroud of Turin” …or some such shit.
Would pay mad money to see that. Shia’s a charming little schmuck, ya?

And all y’all need to see Iron Man cause I’m getting sick of not being able to gush about plot points. I knew shit about Iron Man, but my BF loves the bastard and he says that while it wasn’t spot-on, it’s a great introduction to the franchise. So… yeah. Can’t believe someone could be such a dick, and yet I still wanna shag ‘im.

Oyster shooters!!! YUM!

shot of vodka, dash of tobasco, freshly-shucked oyster… BANG!

delish!

Nizz: I’ve still yet to try that kind, though I really want to.  This was at a sushi place, so it was more about drowning the oyster in spicy-yet-fruit sake of undetermined origin.

No way, I was going to buy the exact same Chucky set you were. But once I saw that the (best) first one wasn’t on there, I didn’t bother.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this above, but the reason the first ‘Child’s Play’ isn’t on the set is because it is an MGM property, whereas the sequels belong to Universal.
