X-Entertainment is still feeling pretty bad about those lobsters.

04/05/2008: Baby steps.

I suck. I guess my current status as a nonentity can’t be attributed to any single thing. I’ve been really, really busy with work, but not in a bad way, and Lord knows that I’ve managed to post even when I was busy with work in a bad way. I think it’s just been my cover excuse: I’ve been busy enough to make myself believe that that was the reason I wasn’t writing anything, rather than figuring out what it really is.

I’m still not entirely sure what it really is; I guess I can sum it up best as a consistent feeling of being “unplugged.” I struggle to find a relevant word for weeks, never once reminding myself that this entire site has been built on irrelevance, and that it would’ve been easier to just write about the damn Iron Man Slurpee three days ago rather than sitting around trying to come up with some kind of magnificent return post.

Also, when I do this, I feel old. I mean, I have this glorious, absolutely glorious television special wherein 50% of the Golden Girls host the 25th anniversary of Disney World live from the park, and I can’t muster the gusto to build the review, because it’s from 1985 and I feel like nobody who would be willing to read sentences in my chosen structure was even born by then anymore. It’s a far cry from the site’s infancy, where I could say “He-Man” and 10,000 people would hold up posterboard signs in tribute.

Then again, I’ll write light confessions like the paragraphs above, read them over, and only then do I get how utterly stupid I’m being. Why? Because in the time it took for me to write that, I could’ve been writing about something you’d actually be interested in, like, say, the Iron Man Slurpee. (It comes in an Iron Man head-shaped mug, you know.)

The other part of it is this: In my head, I always know I’ll eventually come back and write consistently, whether it happens this minute or in a week or a month. And I assume that everyone who reads the site also knows that, and expect them to keep checking, even though I know how annoying that is. There are plenty of sites that I’ve read for years that’ve progressed into having a more casual update schedule, whether by official announcement or pure happenstance. And I know that I’ve felt disconnected from those people after a while, because they seemed to stay on as a lark and not as a lifestyle.

So, I’m sorry if the site seemed to be at the bottom of my checklist lately. It was in action, but not in thought. To help make amends, here’s what I’ll do:

I was recently gifted a swank $100 American Express gift card. I could use the money for something practical — perhaps a pair of jeans that aren’t two inches taller than my legs, or maybe a horde of energy-efficient light bulbs which will scream to the neighbors that I ain’t afraid to go green. Or, I could let you tell me what to buy.

You pick the store, and I’ll go on a $100 shopping spree there, buying only the most ridiculous, weird junk I can find.

The only catch is that I’m not going to travel 50 miles out of town for this, so your choices will be limited to the following:

1) Toys “R” Us
2) Best Buy
3) A Supermarket
4) Amazon.com (okay, so an online choice is lame, but they’ve got some weird shit)

Whichever establishment gets the popular vote in tonight’s thread will win, and I’ll spend tomorrow doing the hunting for the report. I was going to throw a dollar store in the mix, but really, I know that everyone would choose that, and I’m still a good three weeks away from being desperate enough for fresh content that I’d spend a hundred bucks on generic shampoo and obsolete Colorforms playsets.

Aside from that, this is your normal SNT. Tonight’s extra theme? Halloween. Serious. I’m jonesing. Not so much for Halloween proper, but rather just a cold night in some scary log cabin with nothing but space heaters, blankets and crappy food to protect me from the various horror icons who’d dare to make live appearances after I watch them on a shitty fifteen-inch tube television. Seeing as how my psychological clock is so fucked, it makes perfect sense that this notion would hit as soon as it actually feels like springtime outside.

Oh, and my Smash code is 4425-1199-9569. I usually frown upon every thread turning into an exchange of Wii friend codes, but in this case, I really want to spend the night pounding you with my absolutely invincible Pikachu.

Matt… uh.. don’t worry too much? Just take whatever time you need. If the site isn’t top priority at the moment, don’t worry about it. We all still love you, anyway.

Okay, that might have sounded a bit weird >.>

For the gift cared… My gut feeling says Toys R Us.. but then a super market could have some neat stuff…. but I have to go with toys R Us… I went there last week and they had stuff like gummy pokeballs >_>

And… uh… I know I don’t comment to much on here, so ya’ll might not give a crap about my Friend code, but I’ll post it and add everyone in this topic anyway >.>

I actually don’t have too many codes at the moment, so I’d love to play some of you >.>

Matt, if it makes you feel any better, I’m older than you are. :(

On a lighter note, I’d suggest Toys R Us, also! Not just because I work there, but because… well, actually I don’t know if every store in the world is doing this, or just different regions, but our store is having a big clearance sale where all the clearance is an additional 20% off – starting today. So, if your local one is doing that, you’ll probably find some pretty crazy shit. This is the time where all of the weird odds and ends come out of hiding and get gussied up, in hopes of selling before the next phase change!

We finally put out the new Iron Man and Speed Racer toys, too. The figurine of Robert Downey Jr. makes me laugh.

I changed my Brawl name from “NEStr”, which I thought sort of sucked panda bear testicles, to “GUMBO.” Because, well, I like Cajun food.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this, Magic Toy, but your face is upside down.

Duskull – I care. You have been added.

I so wish I had a Wii, and Smash Bros. Brawl!

The funny thing is, by the time I can afford those, nobody here will still be playing it.

Dang I missed Matt again?! Oh well.

And Ultraman…dang, you spam Yoshi’s Down+B. That match was close though, we pretty much both went off at the same time.

Damn my job and my late, odd hours! Every SNT, what am I doing? Well, it ain’t watching SNL with Christopher Walken and chatting on X-E, that’s for damn sure! I’m at work of all places! Bloody hell! Oh well, I’m at home now and still having a groovy night, what’s left of it. As I write this, I’m listening to Coast to Coast on AM radio because it’s a great show but mostly because the guest tonight is Neal Adams, who is one of the best Batman artists ever. Me being the big Batman geek I am, I can’t pass it up. So, maybe the night’s not a bust after all.

Matt, I’m going to assume I’m a little older than you, being that I was born in the late ’70’s, and I LOVE the site. Sometimes you actually review something I totally missed or just don’t remember at all. I ask nothing other than write when you feel like writing, not out of obligation. Iron Man, slurpees?? Seriously? Where can I get one of these things?

And I totally know what you mean about getting a hankering for Halloween. I usually start getting revved up about it sometime in June (mostly because I worked at a haunted house for 6 years and we had to start building our house in late June so that was when the season started for us). But, it’s hitting me early this year. Maybe I’m just jazzed about the summer. It’s going to be a great one for movies and I’ve got big plans for the rest of the year. Plus, the ‘Ween is my fave of all the holidays so it can’t come soon enough.

Bill, The Burbs! Nice. I listened to that at work the other night on Listentoamovie.com…”Now they know that we know that they know that we know!”

Speaking of things coming to DVD, anyone remember Misfits of Science, and if so, is this ever coming out on DVD? I’d love to see it again.

All this talk of martinis makes me wonder something, and I’m sure someone one, prolly Matt, can answer it. I have no idea what “dirty” and “dry” means as it pertains to alcohol. I’ve waited tables on and off for years and served my share of booze and have even had the occasional drink sent back cause it was too dry or not dry enough. To this day, I have no idea what that means. How can something liquid be too dry?

Oh, and put me down for Toys R’ Us. There’s a lot of potential there.

Matt, that’s not like you to not review that Golden Gir’s 1985 special. That’s what this site is, a glorious dedication to the 70s, 80s, and 90s. By the way, I choose Toys R Us as the shop for you to spend that $100 gift card. And a fuck yeah to an early Halloween post.

Ghosted by Joe @ 04/06/2008 4:03 AM EDT

I’ve never commented here before, but I’ve been coming here regularly for at least six years now. I couldn’t care less what you’re writing about. I’m always going to read it. Sure, I’ll be a bit more excited about an Army Ants or Boglins article than, say, one covering a sitcom about a bunch of old women, but I’ll still read it. Things I wouldn’t otherwise be interested in end up interesting when you’re writing about them. So write more often, god damn it!!! But…don’t feel pressured to.

Welcome back, Matt!

I’ve gotta vote for Toys R Us.

The one closest to my house, where I got all my lego kits and the like as a kid, just turned into a baby Toys R us. Which totally sucks, for me anyway. I guess it’s nice for babies and their parents.

Looking forward to see what strange kinds of toys you can find!

good to see ya again, matt!
i vote for the supermarket, cuz there’s plenty of new weird foods out there i’m afraid to buy. don’t worry about lack of updates. it gives us time to go back and re-read some of the old stuff.

Hey Matt, don’t worry about whether there is nobody around to apprechiate all that old stuff. Matt, I’ve been reading your site since the fall of 2002, and I have no plans of stopping now! Take your time, besides it gives *me* time to catch up on old articles and blog posts since I’m always so darn busy!

And I am VERY interested in that Walt Disney World 25th Anniversary celebration hosted by The Golden Girls special. PLEASE review it!

As for where to go? Well, I’m hankering for a bad movie review, so go to wherever you can go to get a bad movie to review! Yeah, that really doesn’t help, does it?

Matt-I just turned 40 (UGH!!) and this is the first website I check each day. Keep on fighting the good fight for us! And I’d choose a supermarket; you can find lots of crappy DVD’s, not to mention Kool Aid!

Ghosted by JennyB7 @ 04/06/2008 10:36 AM EDT

The funny thing is, by the time I can afford those, nobody here will still be playing it.

That’s exactly what I’m worried about too and I have a feeling that nothing short of an even newer Smash Bros is going to be this big in this circle again.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 04/06/2008 10:39 AM EDT

Ugh, of course the ONE Saturday I decide to go to bed before midnight everyone comes out of the woodwork for a big old fashioned SNT. I even woke up after midnight (fucking AIM message dings) got out of bed, glared at my computer, turned the volume off and went back to bed. GRR!

Ghosted by Mystie @ 04/06/2008 10:52 AM EDT

Wow, guess you can’t go to sleep when an SNT is going on. I fell asleep when there were 96 posts and woke up to 230. Also, I didn’t see SNL but thanks to the magic of modern technology and the DVR I have, I was able to record so I guess SNL for me would SMT (Sunday Morning Taped).

I just want to let you all know that I was born in December of 1978 so this December I will be 30. From what I remember from Matt’s posts, I’m almost exactly his age or perhaps a few months older so his articles hit me dead-on! Of course, I’m one of those people who actually likes stuff that came out before I was born! Many of my favorite movies are from the 60s and 70s. Most of the my favorite TV shows started before I was born and either ended shortly after I was born or had their best years prior to my coming into the world (guess I’m to blame for many popular shows of that era “jumping the shark”), and I love 60s and 70s music. Of course, my favorite decade is the 1980s, the hype of my childhood.

I admit, I have never seen the Golden Girls/Disney World Special, or perhaps I did but never seen it. I definetly would love to see Matt do a review of that, but I’ll tell you another Disney special that I remember long ago that I wish would make an appearance. There was a special about Donald Duck’s 50th Birthday in 1984 hosted by Dick Van Dyke. Now THAT would be something to not only see, but reviewed. IT would be nice if Leonard Maltin included it in a Walt Disney Treasure Collection. They’ve already had three volumes of the duck and from what I heard, they STILL haven’t released all his famous shorts.

All this talk about Halloween has made want to go out and purchase the SNL Best Of Halloween DVD. It’s never too early to start making out your lineup of specials to watch I guess. Of course, what could really get my in that kind of mood would be if VH1 ever showed the “I Love The Holidays” special that focuses on the Big Three Holiday Trilogy (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and I guess you can say New Years as well but that really falls during the time people still observe the Christmas Seasaon and it’s not a holiday that stands on its own). I could go on a rant of VH1 needing to show all the “I Love The…” and come out with a new one since it’s been two years since (they are showing the “I Love The 80s 3-D series this Wednesday, and I already have them programmed to record) the last one. I’ll save that for another post.

Anyway, one final note pretaining to DVDs. They’re re-releasing the He-Man/She-Ra movie “The Secret of the Sword” next month. I’ll have to go back and read Matt’s article on that again because I had no idea that it was actually the pilot for the She-Ra series. I seem to be taking my time getting through the final volume of He-Man on DVD and I have declined to get She-Ra until I finish with He-Man. Now I know to hold off until I see this movie if I want to do everything in order.

Well, that’s all for now. Sorry if I got off-topic, which I usually do. However, I don’t recall ever aiming for a specific topic anyway so I guess all is well!

Ghosted by BJ @ 04/06/2008 11:02 AM EDT

I’m pretty sure I’ll be playing Brawl until the next Smash comes out,if there is a next one. That’s how I was with Melee. I mean, yeah it won’t be an every day thing, but for an SNT it’s going to be the game we all like, and it’s easy enough to pick up and play,so I think it’ll be a staple for some time. I’m looking forward to Mario Kart, but I’m not sure how many of you are fans of that series.

Whoever was talking about Donkey Kong emulators, why not just play it on MAME? Pie factory included. :)

Magic Toy and Jake,I’m adding you guys when I play this afternoon.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 04/06/2008 11:05 AM EDT

The best Donkey Kong ever is for the Gameboy.

Matt, we still love you, man. It must be damnably hard to be interesting all the time, so it’s understable if you need a recharge!

WOW I totally crashed last night around midnight….ugh…must’ve been the home made chicken parm subs my husband made around 11:30 last night.

And Matt every time I tried to play you it said you were off line?

and yes poor poor Charlton Heston…loved that man…I gotta watch my VHS planet of the Apes today in tribute. Oh Oh!!! I killed John Denver! or my whole family did rather….As a joke, we were playing his 8 tracks on my Mom-moms stereo, and teasing my Uncle…and I made a comment like…If I ever see him in concert I would throw a brick at his head. (i since changed my mind, he is a or was a good singer)and an hour later…it comes on tv that his plane crashed and he died. :(

I also killed Princess Diana too. When it came on tv that she was critically injured, I was like “omg if she dies its gonna be nothing but tributes and national holidays” wake up next morning…DEAD.

Oh Matt again….use the hundred dollars to go to petco…or pet smart…and buy a few dwarf Hamsters…and blog about how hilarious they are and stuff…you can even use a web cam to spy on them.

Amazon, for the sheer, overwhelming variety.

And don’t feel old, guy. I was born in the late 50’s and think this is one of the best “I need a smile” sites out there. I’m also living in the middle of Circle K/Git ‘n’ Go territory–I don’t think that there a 7-11 for an hour’s drive in any direction, so dish on the IronMan Slurpee, already!

Wow…I feel left out with all this video game stuff…

Also, related to Charlton Heston, I had a dream about Soylent Green last night, which was weird for a variety of reasons…namely that 1) I have never seen the movie, 2) I didn’t know that Heston was in it, and 3) it was morphed into a slasher flick (I blame Freddy). sigh

Well, happy Sunday morning everyone.

I was born in 1982, so I remember a lot of the stuff here. But…I was another guy who prefers stuff from before he was born-I grew up almost entirely on the old Disney cartoons, and my favorite music ranges from the ’60s through the mid-’80s. Still, this site is one of my fave haunts on the Net; I think what first drew me in was Matt’s review of Hi-C from ‘92 or so. And ever since it’s never failed to surprise; I remember Matt reviewed a Q*Bert storybook from the early ’80s which was one of the books I learned to read on. I thought no one else remembered that thing but me.

So thanks again for the memories, Matt, but if you’re too busy to update all the time, then there’s little we can do about it. We’re a pretty mature (sorta), tolerant bunch here, and there’s plenty of old stuff here at X-E to dig back through and laugh at.

PS: I know you don’t give personal responses on the blog too often, but did you get a YouTube video I sent spoofing that McDonald’s ice skating commercial? Good stuff. :)

Hey Matt,

Thanks for coming back, well sort of. Hey no problem about not feeling it lately. We all have our “funks” at some point. Glad that you did post and that you are alive.

Just to let you know, I am 29, born in 79 and love the old school stuff. Even if I am not quit sure or sometimes a little fuzzy about some of the topics I still love reading about things that happened in my time. I also go to wiki and look up your subject and learn more and that always leads to more nostalga. Thanks for all of the articles, keep your head up and remember just because we don’t all post often doesn’t mean we don’t read.

My vote is for TRU. I would love $100 to just blow on junk. I would emerse myself in Transformers and Legos.

Thanks again Matt,
Tigerfan

Born in ‘78 – I love each and every article. Trust me – there are more like me that don’t speak out. If you could measure just MY enjoyment level, I think you’d think it worth it, much less multiply that times the hundreds/thousands? of loyal XE readers. And at some point, you’ve got to realize: we all love the 80’s and it’s miscellaneous crap, but we come here for YOU. That’s the truth buddy.

Ghosted by Terror Claws Cole @ 04/06/2008 2:06 PM EDT

Andrew: I am just like you. Well, I was the one who made the comment of thinking stuff was better before my time, or in my early days then they are now. I grew up on Disney, the Max Fleischer black and white Popeye cartoons, the old Warner Brothers cartoons, and MGM’s Tom and Jerry and all those crazy Tex Avery shorts. NOTHING in my mind can come close to the quality of animation as in those golden days of theatrical shorts. I’m also a sucker for all the early TV cartoons with limited/bad animation such as the early days of Hanna Barbera and UPA’s Mr. Magoo and Gerald McBoing. Hell, my all-time favorite cartoon has always been The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, a show known all too well for its crude animation.

Anyway, started getting in a rhythm and I seemed to have wanted to name all my favorite cartoon shows from the days of yesterday, but I’ll stop. Matt definetly brings back a lot of memories for me. Heck, he reviewed a show last Halloween called “The Halloween that Almost Wasn’t” and I had forgotten all about it until he jogged my memories, and let’s not forget when he reviewed the only Tales From the Darkside I EVER remember seeing. So yeah, I owe Matt a lot of debt for keeping memories like these alive for me. It’s also nice to know that I’m not the only one who remembers this stuff, and who still has a liking for them. Anyway, I can’t say it enough Matt but thanks so much and however long it takes you to write a blog/article, we always have past articles to read and re-read for our amusement! Thanks again!

Ghosted by BJ @ 04/06/2008 2:11 PM EDT

I also got the Donald Duck thing BJ mentioned.
A couple of other Disney Specials I remember from the 80s was something called “Totally Minnie” where the main guy from “Revenge of the Nerds” had a crush on Minnie Mouse and she sang with Elton John.

I also remember Mickey’s 50th Birthday where he went missing and he hopped around 80s NBC lineup of Cheers, Family Ties, and a few others. John Ritter played a reporter and Cheech Marin and Phylicia Rashad were janitors who sang at the end.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 04/06/2008 2:16 PM EDT

I guess I’m too late to vote, but I wanted to comment anyway.

I guess a comment from one person can’t make up for 10,000 posterboard signs, but I was born in 1986 and I would love to read about He-Man or a 50% Golden Girls Disneyworld special. I think the reason this site is so fascinating to me is that 80s culture lurks at the back of my mind, something I can barely remember from my earliest years. It’s like a pilgrimage to the formative stage of my life, and everything seems incredibly familiar even if I couldn’t possibly have seen it.

Now I sound like a crazy person.

Long live X-E! I will read it no matter what you write about.

It has Mark Hamill, an OLD Harley Quinn at the end a 10-year-old shooting someone in the chest (seriouly). It can be found on Veoh (definitely) and (maybe) YouTube if you search hard enough (and its on DVD).

There was also a spinoff of Beyone that lasted just 1 or 2 seasons called the Zeta Project: REALLY obscure
