01/26/2008: Milton Bradley’s T.H.I.N.G.S.!

It’s kind of shocking that even after all these years of X-E’ing, I still haven’t covered all of my favorite childhood toys. Though the focus of tonight’s entry didn’t exactly set the world on fire during their short stay on toy shelves in the mid ’80s, I’ve long adored their unbridled goofiness and oddball presentation. Meet the T.H.I.N.G.S.!

Produced by Milton Bradley from 1986-1987, T.H.I.N.G.S. (”Totally Hilarious Incredibly Neat Games of Skill”) capitalized on its era’s penchant for weird toys in a wacky series of timed, hands-on exercises composed of primary colored plastics and bold stickers. They looked more like “prop toys” than real toys — the kind of stuff you’d see in a kid’s bedroom during a movie, so as to avoid unwarranted product placement with playthings that were actually in stores. There was a simplistic, ’60s tin toy vibe about these games, and I can only attribute their relative obscurity to a society too stupid to notice the godsends right under their noses at the tail end of TRU’s board game aisle.

There were a number of T.H.I.N.G.S. games, all totally unrelated from each other, save for their size and an overall theme of being completely odd. For me, it was all about the presentation. The wonderfully compact boxes maintained a single size and shape throughout the collection, but they came in all different colors, with each game’s package featuring beautiful illustrations and more photographs than the toys inside really deserved.

As a kid, my favorite of the bunch was the one pictured above: Eggzilla! As an adult, I realize that Eggzilla is one of the least inspired of all the T.H.I.N.G.S. games, and that my bias towards it only had to do with the fact that the included Godzilla-esque piece could be snatched away from its base and transformed into a veritable action figure with 100x the replay value.

Most (or maybe all?) of the T.H.I.N.G.S. were timed games where you had to complete an activity before a buzzer sounded, or alternatively, something exploded. This is one of the latter cases. The goal is to build Eggzilla’s egg before time runs out, at which point he pops upward, breaks through the shell and maybe hits you in the forehead. It wasn’t much fun then, and it isn’t much fun now. I can totally see why I turned the Eggzilla figure into a comedic dragon pet for my random action figures and tossed the rest. If you’d like to see Eggzilla work his mojo, you can do so in this terribly grainy YouTube video I just made.

Don’t leave yet…I have more T.H.I.N.G.S. to show you.

The beauty of the collection was in its overwhelming variety, and I think you’ll get a sense of that when you see just how different this game was. Astro-Nots was fitted with an out-of-this-world science fiction theme, featuring spaceships, astronauts and horrible alien creatures of the H. R. Giger variety.

Looks pretty neat, doesn’t it? Even more so when you realize that everything shown above is only about as big as my hand. Astro-Nots works much like those magnetic fishing games, where you cast a magnet-charged line into the spinning fishies’ mouths and try to catch as many as possible before the world blows up. The main difference here is that you’re catching astronauts instead of fish, and you’re doing it with a spaceship instead of a plastic fishing pole. Thematically, I’d give the nod to Astro-Nots over its more famous cousin.

See the blue alien guy? After yanking him, he’ll slowly eat his way up the string while the Astro-Nots spin with reckless abandon, praying for rescue. If you gather ‘em all up and safely plant them into the holding deck before the alien crashes against the wall, you win! Granted, there’s nothing stopping you from continuing to pluck up Astro-Nots after the creature hits the wall. With Milton Bradley’s one-player T.H.I.N.G.S. games, the honor system was in full effect.

Also: Astro-Nots make for a slightly more exciting YouTube video than Eggzilla.

Other T.H.I.N.G.S. sets featured everything from medieval knights to mad doctors to giant gorillas, and though they lacked the certain collectable je ne sais quoi that was necessary to stay afloat in such a competitive market, I’m happy to have known and fondled them. I’m also happy to have used je ne sais quoi in a sentence today. I’m hardcore.

Okay, I finally have to just outright ask this. What does SNT stand for? I’m guessing Saturday Night……

Taco!

I mean Thread.

Hey!! Astro-Nots! I knew the packaging on the Eggzilla seemed familiar. My brother and I had the Astro-Nots (and they might still be booting about). It was a cool game, and even aside from the game, the little Astro-Nots were just plain cool. I just didn’t know they were part of series of toys.

I had Perfection. Totally had Perfection.

Ghosted by 7 @ 01/27/2008 2:11 AM EST

Ah, Saturday Night Thread. Thanks dohopoki. But a Saturday Night Taco would also be good.
Tacos aside, I just had Irn Bru pop for the fist time. A British Foods store opened up here, and I bought a can. Not bad. For some reason I thought it’d taste like that slightly orangey salty Triaminic cough medicine. It’s actually an indescribable flavour. And it’s not overly sweet or anything. I’m not a huge fan of pop, but I always wanted to try Irn Bru. And Tizer. Next time I’ll get that. I also have some Dr.Pepper Chcolate Cherry, which just has to be good, but I haven’t opened it yet.

Perfection may have been around since the 70s, but for some reason there was a big campaign behind it in the early 90s. In fact, there seemed to have small fad in the 90s of timed games of skill/chance. We had Perfection, Don’t Wake Daddy, one where you fed cardboard food slices to a fat chef that he later vomited, and other games of that ilk.

This must be hamburger phone day because I just got done watching the Tom Hanks/Dan Aykroyd “Dragnet” movie from the 80s and Hanks uses a hamburger phone in a scene.

I’ve always loved the articles dealing with Matt’s various trips/vacations.

I also remember those neon/see-through phones. You could find them at Spencers Gifts. That place was/still kinda is the place to go for neon/see-through/colorful lights like lava lamps.

Mickey Mouse phones were also popular, to go along with MM watches.

Leigha: You’re not alone! I just discovered XE in August and didn’t even comment until December, so that makes me an XE baby too! I don’t even know how to make people’s names in bold in the comments box, yet.

I don’t really remember T.H.I.N.G.S., I was only 4 when they went out. But after 88, I can remember just about every toy that every Saturday Morning Cartoon commanded me to beg my parents for!

Funny, I always thought SNT meant saturday night titties…..but maybe im just a sucker for boobs. Ha, I keed…I keed, seriously though it means Saturday Night Taint….right? :)

I think DJ D taught me the bold thingy. its (b)NAME OF PERSON OR WORD YOU WANT BOLD(/b) but instead of parentheses use the and in their place…..hopefully thats some help….If mr. DJ D can help me, then maybe I can help you….you know, like that movie pay it forward or some shit…..or maybe im completely wrong and i just need some sleep…

Ghosted by Leigha @ 01/27/2008 2:27 AM EST

Fuck my life…..the character to use instead of the parentheses are the bracket things that look like pac man’s mouth….or the greater than or less than sign….you know, the hungry alligator……

Ghosted by Leigha @ 01/27/2008 2:29 AM EST

Leigha : Thanks a lot! I’ll be sure to help the next newbie when they ask.

While I’m at it, does anybody know any websites that stream classic late 80’s- mid 90’s cartoons? I’m talking Real Ghostbusters, Eek the Cat, Bobby’s World, G.I. Joe… stuff like that. My 25th birthday’s creeping up on me in about 25 more days, and I’m kinda feeling nostalgic.

Ghosted by Captain Will @ 01/27/2008 2:33 AM EST

I had a Garfield watch that was pretty cool it was his face and you pushed buttons on the sides of his mouth and his mouth opened to show you a digital watch screen for a second or two. I lost it and saw another kid wearing it. My theory is it turned up in the lost in found and he lied and claimed it. Maybe that’s not true but man I was upset. I guess I should of told someone.

I also forgot to post before, I went to GW yesterday and I saw a bottom sheet for a twin sheet set based on the movie ET. It was awesome, but honestly I don’t need a bottom sheet. If it was a comforter or the top sheet I would of got it probably. Not that I am obsessed with the movie but the artwork is vintage and neat.

Why am I telling you? I took a couple of pictures with my camera phone. I am kind of looking for a blanket there that isn’t too faded and stained and stuff that is neat. Because we are down to one blanket and we both toss and turn at night.

ET picture

You can click on the next picture of course to look at both a closeup and overall picture.

And I discovered my new favorite mix of fountain drinks today. I can’t believe I didn’t figure it out before. Most of the way filled with lemonade and the rest of the way unsweetened ice tea. It reminds me of the lemonade Iced T Koolaid from years back. I got it today at the Subway within our Super Walmart in town while I was eating my meatball marinara. I am addicted to them. Second one within a week from each other. Is that the definition of obbsessed? lol

Also I started up a store on Etsy.com to sell artwork. For those who don’t know Etsy.com is a site to sell handmade products, the site’s goal is for people that have the talent to make such things can make a living off of the items.

Here’s my store It doesn’t have anything there now but I think later tonight I am going to put up a drawing I did last night. I am happy with it, it’s a pencil sketch. I am just shocked at the diversity of the items people sell on that site, a simple drawing on a blank white greeting card for 6 bucks, or a really detailed elaberate painting for 250 bucks. Or a beaded necklace, quilt, earrings, soap, the list goes on. It motivates me and inspires me when I look through the items. I am confident I’ll find my niche there someplace, if not, I can make homemade soap lol! Homemade soap looks very easy to make so that’s my plan b :)

Captain Will joox.net is a good site for that. Someone just put up a ton of He-man cartoons. You just have to go through and grin and bear it when you hit one that gives you a 404 error.

Movies and shows are put on and taken off of joox daily, after I click on movies I click on the recently added needs confirmation link on the front page. yep the He-man cartoons are still in needs confirmation mode (and episodes of Friday the 13th the tv series)

Also when all else fails I go to ovguide.com if it’s not on joox.net. But you search through several sites with that one, and not just browse though.

I am 25 too! I am going to be 26 on March 7th. I am not looking forward to it, b-day’s are hard for me (I don’t like the thought of being older and feeling I still haven’t done anything with my life)

When I first saw the post I felt like those things looked familiar. Then I watched the videos and it felt like a sound from the past. After looking over the instruction manuals I realized I so had a “Sir Rings-A-Lot”.

Glad I figured that out; it would have drove my insane ;)

(goob)

You totally almost made me freak out, I had the whole bedroom set from ET it was the same shit! thanks for that little flash back. I remember I had dukes of hazzard, ET and the pink panther. Cur the theme song from CATS memorys….

Finally! The song that I’ve all but memorized for more than twenty years now:

I’ve got a thing for Go-Rilla,
gonna make a monkey out of this big fella,
-something something something-
I’ve got a THING for T.H.I.N.G.S.!

I’ve got a thing for Dr. Wacko,
gotta flip those lids before he flips his top,
do it all before the timer stops,
I’ve got a THING for T.H.I.N.G.S.!

I’ve got a thing for Astro-Nots,
gotta save ‘em all before the timer stops!
Here comes the alien, lickin’ his chops–
I’ve got a THING for T.H.I.N.G.S.!

Nuts to the curse.
I love those neon phones! That Kermit phone is cool too.
Favorite article is a really tough one. It might be a bit of a copout, but I’ve always been fond of that anniversary article that includes links to practically everything that came before it.

It is pretty incredible how far this SNT has gotten considering how late it came up and how directionless its been.

Hey all.
favourite article would either be Coreys Video Diary or The Cobra Chia plot.
or maybe Ash Vs Skeletor for Pepsi Blue.

Ghosted by JoshC @ 01/27/2008 3:31 AM EST

My favorite article would have to be Matt’s review of Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue, because it was the article that lead me here from the vast swamps of Google… and I’ve been here ever since :D

Ghosted by Captain Will @ 01/27/2008 4:21 AM EST

The only “toy” that I remember coming out the year of my birth is MegaMan 1, and that isn’t a toy so much as my Messiah.

That space one looks awesome, and I’m sure that if I was born four to twelve years earlier, I would have snaggeed the space and knights one. My two favorite genres… Ahh…. *travels into waking dream*

Ghosted by Ben @ 01/27/2008 4:23 AM EST

First off, I saw Cloverfield this morning, and for anyone who wants to read my long winded and excited take on things, it’s in that other thread.

Anyways, yeah, Manimal, nice to see you around again. If you thought that was something, you should have heard some of the stuff that was said in the break room. It’ll curl your hair. Oh, and I applaud you for getting the kids started on classics like Dungeons and Dragons. Good job.

I think Matt said something in the post about Eggzilla looking like a prop toy from the background of a movie. That reminded me of something. The other day I finally sat down to watch my 20th Anniversary DVD of Monster Squad that I’ve been hanging on to for a while, and I noticed that in the scene where the mummy goes into the kid’s closet, that on his dresser is a My Pet Monster doll. I used to LOVE my My Pet Monster. That was in my Easter basket one morning and that was how I figured out the awful truth about the Easter Bunny. I think I was kind of just playing along those last couple of years anyway, but once I saw that the packaging for My Pet Monster was in the kitchen trash, the jig was up.

I won one of those hamburger phones by winning first place in a poster making contest in the 6th grade. I can’t believe I got away with what I did though. It was this ridiculously over the top thing. I drew pictures of various pills and joints and a giant picture of the grim reaper and actually stapled plastic baggies onto it filled with flour to represent cocaine and some old medication my mom didn’t need anymore. She actually helped me with it! Of course, at the age of 12 I had never actually seen cocaine in real life, but was going solely on what I saw in the movies and TV. Well, apparently it was a different time back then because as far as I know, no one thought it was shocking or offensive. They were all impressed by the originality and I won hands down. I don’t think any of it would fly now though.

Goob, Etsy looks good. That’s a good idea. I do pencil portraits on the side for extra cash, and am working on eventually getting some professional illustration work. I might submit some of my stuff. Thanks for telling us about Joox too. I’ll definetly have to check that out.

Oh, and while reading the article, one of the ads that popped up was for Lake Placid 2 coming to DVD. They make a point of saying in the ad in big letters that you can pre-order your copy. Exactly how many people are just pissing themselves in an effort to pre-order Lake Placid 2?…cause they HAVE to see this shit ASAP, jack! I’m just curious.

One off topic note, I’m sure by now everybody knows Barack Obama won the primary here in SC today. Let me tell you, this place was ca-ray-zee. Yeah, try driving in downtown Columbia this afternoon. Between the Obama supporters and the Hillary supporters waving their signs all in the streets, I thought for sure I was going to mow some of them down on the way to work.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/27/2008 5:33 AM EST

Oh, one more thing. I just remembered what might be my fave X-E article (or at least the one that stands out to me as I’m typing this at 4:33 in the morning). It was the first one I ever read, and it might be my fave, not because it was the best necessarily, but because it was the first and just holds nostalgic value. It was the one that reviews various anti-drug PSA’s and transcribes the dialogue of a woman yelling at her kid about doing drugs. Apparently his brother died of an overdose or something and they’re on the way to the funeral and she’s freaking the fuck out. She’s screaming at the top of her lungs and Matt’s transcription of every nonsensical word combined with his own personal interjections had me literally crying I was laughing so hard. I found the site because I Googled “80’s commercials”, and after looking at some of those, a few clicks led me to this one, and I was hooked ever since. I started looking around at old articles and then started checking the blog on a regular basis. Sometime last summer I started contributing to the threads, and the rest is history I guess. Being that it’s been less than a year since I’ve been a regular, I still consider myself a newbie.

DJD
I think I have been coming here a little over a year. Its amazing what helps one in unexpected ways. I found this site roughly a month or so after my wife kicked me out of my house.Ill spare everyone the details, but needless to say this site was a bit of a god send. somthing to keep me occupied along with lots and lots of booze. Its cool that matt has shared some intimate details of his life, and I salute him for having the stones to do it. Its hard putting yourself out there. I cant think of how many blogs I have started and then deleted.I have enjoyed XE so much Im contemplating going back to school for web design. I do a lot of stuff on the webb, I Mixx,I digg drudge report fark the whole works. But hands down this is my favorite spot, because Matt and the XE community have a lot of heart……OK now Im going to puke for being so sappy. I turned XE into the lifetime network.

Ghosted by mortalwind @ 01/27/2008 6:18 AM EST

I’ve been an X-Er since the sites been around. I remember when I first found it, I thought to myself, ” this site seems really interesting and unique”. It was late at night too. I instantly became hooked when I saw what the site was about and its content. I was instantly rolling on the floor in hysterical laughter halfway through reading my first article. I had never read such hysterical articles before. Matt has by far the funniest writing style of anyone whos stuff i’ve ever read. I know I sound like a brown noser but i’m being completely honest here. I found X-E by accident. I was searching Cobra Commander. I saw this result description that said “The downfall of Cobra Commander the rise of Burgess Meredith”.I clicked on it, read it, and I was never the same again. But in a good way =). Oh and this was my first X-E article by the way.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 01/27/2008 6:47 AM EST

Oh, and i’d just like to add that X-E is without a doubt my favorite site… period. I just enjoy it so much.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 01/27/2008 7:20 AM EST

DJ D Thank you, I am obsessed with Joox actually, I got a dvd quality copy of Juno (among other movies) off of there. And they don’t cease to amaze me what they upload on a daily basis. I have tons of movies on DVD’s just because they are nice to have on hand if I have the impulse to watch them.

Also about Etsy, I do pencil portraits too but they aren’t like some others. Some it looks like a freakin photograph. It amazes me but also it makes me feel bad about my drawings. I guess everyone has their own style and I probably draw in ways they are jealous of too. I have to be in the right mood too to draw from a photo or it turns to shit. I was going to finish up my drawing from last night but because of the weather (freezing rain made the road like an ice rink) my best friend came home early from work tonight. I am confident that I’ll find a place on Etsy, because of the art that is posted on their already. They are about my style or like I would say “worse” but it’s really just more of a simple or easier drawing. And they make me want to do some cartoonish silly valentine greeting cards. Hey I already have some white greeting cards, the kind you get to print greeting cards from home. I bought 12 w/ envelopes at GW for 4.40. Pretty cool.

One thing I can show you of me drawing from a photo, is I drew a picture of the comedian ANT. Random I know but I visit his blog daily and he has a great group of people over there that post and I post daily too. We update each other on our lives and support each other through things. Kind of like here, but we don’t talk about ninja turtles and stuff like that over there! lol! Anyway…
Picture of ANT

Here’s a drawing that I made when I was 18. Nothing to say about it it just kicks ass. Sorry the size is so small though. I am thinking about scanning it again and then selling the prints on Etsy. Alot of people sell prints.

Knife Guy Picture

Also though you should skim through the TOS there because there are some that I am surprised at. They want the things that you list to be handmade by yourself. If you are selling something that is storebought it has to be modified somehow by yourself to be unique. Also if it has swearing, gore, violence or sex you are to write Mature in your auction and your default pic that shows up is to be blurred or just G rated. I am glad I read that because one drawing I want to draw is political and violent.

Eh, might as well show you the picture!

Don’t click this link of you are fond of George W Bush

Now you guys I don’t want to start a discussion about this picture so just keep it to yourselves. I am just showing good ol’ DJ D this picture and that’s it.

Alright…what I am thinking is drawing him and the ‘ahem’ bodies below him on a piece of white drawing paper. Then cutting around him and gluing that on a piece of blue paper, then layering that with a piece of red paper and cutting around that. THEN gluing that on a piece of white construction paper and I am thinking drawing blue and red stars on the white construction paper background or something like that. It is a good idea in my head but we’ll see.

Captain Will, I also decided to visit X-E obsessively after I read the Cartoon All-Stars review. I had been here a couple of times before that (I remember reading the McGriddles article a long-ass time ago), but that gem made me stick around for good.

I’ve been reading regularly for almost a year now, but I’ve only been commenting for like, maybe six months or something.

Oh, and I am also turning 25 in about two weeks. O_o

After a little bit of retracing my online steps, i have found that the first time I visited X-E was on May 21st, 2007. I have probably told the story before, but my friend June posed a question to the general public on her facebook account about grizzly chomps, someone posted a link to X-E and I clicked on it, and I’ve been addicted to it since….like a really good and positive version of crystal meth that doesnt make me pick at the carpet or blow up my house on accident…

Said it before so I’ll say it again: my first was “Spider-Man reviews a box of crayons”. It was like a bad car accident; I just couldn’t look away.

Felt like I became a part of the “XE Family” during the first August Mega Party back in ‘06. Like mortalwind I had just gone through a big shitstorm in my life, and this was my place to come for better times. Rock on….

I don’t know exactly when I started posting on XE, because I originally posted as “Jim”, for a few months, then someone else started posting as “Jim”, so I started posting as “Old Jim”, to delineate myself from that other poster, and since then, I haven’t noticed the other Jim posting, but I have permanently adopted the “Old Jim” moniker – but I can’t exactly search XE for all instances of “Jim”, because it’s to vague. I would guess, and this is only a guess, that it was around March 2006.

Sorry for the double post, but:
Yes, I do know the difference between “to” and “too”, but I must not have proofread my post too carefully before I hit “enter”. And that’s one of my pet peeves, too… I usually have to hold myself in check to prevent myself from correcting others’ grammatical errors. :-)

Happy happy to all the birthday peeps. I won’t be 25 until later this year but I’m glad that there are a few of us to give the “turning 30″ contingent a run for their money.
I’m so looking up the “crack babies killing babies” PSA article after this, because it’s definitely one of the funniest things ever. I wish I could remember my first X-E article. I was a big seanbaby.com fan, and I used to Google for similar sites and X-E was always the top result. Took me forever to click on it though, because I was afraid “x-entertainment” meant porn (I know I’ve told this before, sorry). I always remember the Rainbow Brite at the San Diego Zoo review as the first one posted after X-E had become a daily stop though, so I have a soft spot for that one.
I’m with doho now, I can’t believe Jim and Shuan haven’t been here longer than that.

I do remember the Neon Phones and the Garfield one as well. I so wanted either of those, but cell phones & puberty took care of that obsession fairly quickly.

Captain Will, I also decided to visit X-E obsessively after I read the Cartoon All-Stars review. I had been here a couple of times before that (I remember reading the McGriddles article a long-ass time ago), but that gem made me stick around for good.

That article is what got me here, too. I found this site sometime between 2002 and 2003, as I remember seeing every Advent Calendar put up in sequence except for the first uncompleted one.

As for favorite articles…For me, no one else said Spider-Man Reviews Crayons? That is a classic, not to mention all the other ones said already.

“HE WAS MY BABY MY BABY HE WAS MY BABY AND THEY TOOK ‘IM THEY TOOK ‘IM FROM ME! ME! HIS MUDDAH! HIS BRUTHA! THE HORRA! HOLLA!!! CRACK BABIES! KILLIN’ BABIES! IT ALL STOPS NOW! YA HEAH ME LORD IT ALL STOPS NOW!!!!!”
Way more inspired than the current crop of anti-drug PSAs. Though I am always amused at the current one with the girl who looks to be about 12 that got “so high” on Saturday night that she did something so apparently skanky that everyone in school is passing around the pictures. On their modern day cellular mobile telephones, no less. So attuned with today’s reality!

Doesn’t Donnie Wahlberg at least have better prospects than a NKOTB reunion? I thought he was devoted to acting now. He was just in that miniseries with John Leguizamo recently and it was pretty good. I know the rest of those guys don’t have anything better lined up.
