My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Cloverfrenzied.

Sorry about the lack of updates lately. I think my brain was going through one of those infrequent bouts of needing a long R&R period. Also, I was pretty exhausted after this year's Advent Calendar, and what was only intended to be "a few days off" turned into...well, however long it's been.

However! I've actually been working on a "real" article on and off for the past week. I generally don't do that, because if I can't knock an article out in one or two sittings, it usually means that I'm not really all that into it. I think I'm into this one, but I just can't muster the gusto to shut the world off for the six hours it'd take to finish it, polish it, publish it and be done with it. But, that'll happen sooner or later. It's a really dumb one, too. Something maybe 5% of you will be at all interested in. But hey.

This post is just my way of saying that I haven't been hit by a train or anything, but there's one other thing I should talk about before it gets too late to do so with purpose:

Went into the office today to kick off a couple of new gigs, which I was happy about for several reasons. One, I got to see my work buds for the first time in over a month. Two, this will eventually lead to paychecks. Three, I was starting to go a bit stir crazy. Four...I got to see giant Cloverfield billboards.

You know, I'm just going to come out and admit that I'm a total 100% Grade A Cloverfield fanboy, and have been since Day 1. I've only mentioned it once or twice on the site, but truth be told, I've been tracking this film like a teenaged loon, day in, day out.

Even if you haven't actively followed it, you've probably heard about the film's screwy viral campaign. I mean, if you're online a lot, it's been kind of hard to miss. I know many of you balk at the thought of such campaigns, and generally speaking, I'm with you: When it's vagueness in place of content and mystery in place of intrigue, that's a bad thing. I don't think Cloverfield falls under that umbrella, though. Having followed the madness, with its many fictitious personalties, faux companies, Flash websites and clues that lead to nowhere and anywhere, I'd feel almost compelled to buy a ticket to the film even if I knew it was going to suck. I've certainly gotten more than ten bucks worth of enjoyment just from the shit they've done to make me want to buy that ticket.

It's a little late to try to explain the movie's marketing to the uninitiated, but Christ, I can't remember the last time I was this amped up for something. I'm not just talking about the usual anticipation of a big movie: I'm talking about anything. Can the film possibly live up to the hype, especially for those of us who spent months digging around endlessly for every tidbit we could find?

I doubt it, but that's not going to be the movie's fault. Hell, I've had dreams about Cloverfield. Completely fleshed out dreams with swooping pans over black seas, towards magnificent shots of monsters-of-my-own-design. How could any movie compete with that?

On the other hand, I have a pretty good idea about what I'm going to see, and I can't imagine leaving that theater without wanting to see the film at least one more time. Cloverfield is going to be remembered chiefly for its marketing, but I don't think we're dealing with another Snakes On A Plane. It's a film featuring a giant monster that kicks the shit out of New York City in a totally unfriendly, uncharming and unforgiving way. No amount of bad dialogue or acting can hamper something that grisly or primal. And given some of the other "aspects" of the film that I'm pretty certain of, good God...it's gonna be visceral.

I'm not worried about having to eat my words. Like I said, the movie can totally suck balls. It doesn't matter. I've already gotten my fair share of happiness from it. Still, as someone who believes that there really isn't such a thing as a bad monster-destroys-the-city movie, my hopes stay high, and January 18th can't come soon enough.

That seems like a good segue into a survey: What are you looking forward to in the coming months? Doesn't have to be a movie. If you're getting a new car or something, that counts.

PS: Yes yes, I'll take down the site's Christmas decorations this week.

Guise, I just love the UK-centric perspective you (and a few others) have been bringing lately. What with the yobs and chavs and Trinny and Susannahs and all :)
WRT Eli Roth and Trailer Trash, I’ve never really been attracted to his work but his performance in Grindhouse (directing Thanksgiving and especially acting in Death Proof) endeared him to me so I’m happy he’s got a movie coming out that actually sounds appealing to my sensibilities. Hopefully Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright all make contributions too, that would be really awesome.

300th!!…I’m guessing, unless someone jumps the gun on me in the next few seconds. I’m at work right now and it’s one of those rare times when there’s actually nothing for me to do so I’m getting caught up on e-mailing and my X-E reading.

I’ve got Hard Candy in my Netflix queue and haven’t seen it yet so I’m going to pretend I didn’t read the last few posts about it and hope it hasn’t been spoiled or anything.

Guise, what part of the UK are you from? I did a student exchange in Middlesborough a few years ago and lived there for 4 months. I’m planning on saving up and going back for a month or so after I graduate….whenever that will be.

Goob, et. al.
Sorry for inadvertently causing the spoiling of Hard Candy… :-(
Anyway, I guess my tastes in movies are far too vanilla for even psychological torture on film – my choice in genres are pretty much limited to comedies, dramas (not thrillers so much), science fiction and action movies (providing there’s not too much gore).

It’s ok Old Jim I thought you meant your comment in a manly way not in a I don’t have a strong enough stomach for that kind of movie sort of way. I am thinking about putting up tonight a movie review on my youtube account.

I am watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles it’s probably too late for an arrangement but I think it would be fun to do a movie night with this show like Matt did with Friday the 13th. I am taking the show with a grain of salt. I honestly think it’s watered down and I just can’t take it seriously. I think when there are one movie or a great series of movies and they try to make a tv series out of the movie plot it’s an insult to the movies. Mind you I have been a big fan of the Terminator series (the first 2 at least) since I was 10 so that’s been 15 years of getting a smile when I hear someone mention the series and an occasional ebay or google search.

This reminds me of the Blade the series they had a couple of years ago on FX. Yes they made that into a brief series. But with a touch of Prison Break. We’ll see.

The music in Ghostbusters was and remains amazing. The use of that song, ‘Magic’ works PERFECTLY with that scene, as does ‘saving the day’. Also, the use of ‘Higher and Higher’ in GB2 rocks.

Dan Ackroyd was signing autographs in my town 2 weeks ago, and I raced to the event after work, and this jackass security guard wouldn’t let me join the line, since there were more people than expected! I ADORE Dan Ackroyd (he is one of the pillars of my youth!) and so I bribed him 10 bucks and he still wouldn’t. Then I got pissed and said “But these people didn’t even bring anything to SIGN!” and sure enough, a bunch of teeny boppers were just standing there, staring at cell phones, whereas I was clutching my ‘Nothing But Trouble’, ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Great Outdoors’ DVDs.

My friend eventually had to lead me away forcibly. I got pretty mad at the guy. :) But hey…it’s RAY!

Hey all, your old buddy TCC checking in at the depths of another 300+ posts. Kinda like the bottom of the sea. Who will come visit me here in the briny depths? Glub Glub.

DJ D, I’m from Weston super Mare (if only it had been Mega Mare!), which is near Bristol in the South West of England.

For a small seaside town we were home to Jeffrey Archer (author, Conservative politician, convicted perjurer), Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist for Deep Purple and Rainbow), John Cleese (oh yes!), Roald Dahl, and Rupert Graves. Which isn’t too shabby.

About all my hometown is known for is being the birthplace of Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees…

Chestnuts roasted by Old Jim @ 01/14/2008 1:00 PM

My hometown is the birthplace of most of the members of Devo, The Black Keys, Chrissie Hynde the lead singer of the Pretenders, Lebron James, and of course, Jeffrey Dahmer…..

Chestnuts roasted by Leigha @ 01/14/2008 1:28 PM

Leigha
Considering my hometown is less than 5% the size of yours, I guess I’m lucky that anybody of note came from it… Of course, the fact that we have a hospital, with a locally renowned maternity unit, probably didn’t hurt… ;-)

Also, now that I think about it, my town was also where most components of the motors of the Apollo rockets that sent the men to the moon were manufactured.

Chestnuts roasted by Old Jim @ 01/14/2008 1:57 PM

Yeah I dont think much came from my hometown…ummm, First overseas Telegraph transmission REPRESENT.

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 01/14/2008 1:59 PM

JoshC
You live in Cornwall? Cool!

Chestnuts roasted by Old Jim @ 01/14/2008 2:13 PM

Old Jim: Nope, The other side, St. Johns Newfoundland.

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 01/14/2008 2:18 PM

Oh, the first reception of a transatlantic transmission… ;-)

Chestnuts roasted by Old Jim @ 01/14/2008 2:25 PM

Kinda embarrasing, but I just had to look it up, Yep, reception, I thought it was T’other way round.
Well, I learned something today!

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 01/14/2008 2:31 PM

wowee-wow-wow-wow.
Did i miss an SNT or what?
Ha- I miss every SNT.
Anyway.
Uhm…
where to chime in?
I think maybe someone famous came from my hometown, but all the towns out here are so close together you can claim anyone that comes out of the East Bay as being from your hometown.
So in that case…
Chuck Billy
Cliff Burton
Machine Head
Testament

and- upon further research, Kristy Yamaguchi!

Chestnuts roasted by kittymao @ 01/14/2008 2:38 PM

Kittymao, I just love saying the name Kristy Yamaguchi…

And, does that mean that I can count anyone coming from Bristol too, as it’s very, very close? I mean, it goes from Cary Grant to Edward “Blackbeard” Teach.

Hard Candy is a really good movie. No spoilers here, but it’s definitely worth a look. I watched it as a double feature with May. I encourage everyone to check out both flicks.

Chestnuts roasted by Chris Martin @ 01/14/2008 4:13 PM

Yeah I really liked Hard Candy too, Just looked up May on IMDB, Looks like something I should check out.

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 01/14/2008 4:26 PM

Sorry for the double post, but this has been driving me nuts!
Do any of you still have Regular TBS or is it all “Peachtree TV” now?
I ask because I still havent gotten over being screwed outta 24 hours of A Christmas Story.

Chestnuts roasted by JoshC @ 01/14/2008 4:44 PM

My state of Iowa actually has quite a few entertainers associated with it.

John Wayne
Donna Reed
Ashton Kutcher
Matt Routh
Jeremy Piven
I think Johnny Carson was born in Iowa but I’m not sure
Tom and Roseanne Arnold both lived here temporarilly.

Also both “Field of Dreams” and “Bridges of Madison County” filmed here. Some indy baseball movie filmed here not too long ago with Sean Astin in it.

Also Max Collins (wrote Road to Perdition) is from Iowa.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 01/14/2008 4:51 PM

Jeez I got screwed! The only famous person I know of from my home town is Sinbad.

Josh C
It’s still TBS in Denver.

Chestnuts roasted by Dan H @ 01/14/2008 5:22 PM

Dan, I’m all confused…are you from Denver (where Sinbad went to Uni) or Benton Harbour, Michigan (where he grew up)?

Because Denver is chock full of people worth a mention…Hell, Frank Welker and Jan!Michael!Vincent!!! alone makes Denver.

Also, JLAJRC, Iowa is bigger in area than the England portion of the UK? I’m not sure if I should be even more impressed by English famous people now that I have a comparison! ;)

Chestnuts roasted by Guise @ 01/14/2008 5:40 PM

Oh, and Dan, if it was Benton Harbor…you’d have had Ernie Hudson!
