You are all doomed. Why not surrender? We might let you live.

12/31/2007: Bye, 2007.

And so marks the last thread of 2007. Use it wisely. Personally, I was not a fan of 2007. I liked 2006 better, and I hope I’ll like 2008 better. 2008 is a cool-sounding year. Sounds…futuristic.

Got a resolution? Share it. Got a POV on the year that was? Share it. Rather just comment on how the dead tree outside your house kind of looks like a giant monster paw? I don’t mind. It’s just a thread. But it’s the last one with “2007″ next to your comments. Is it hard to say goodbye to a number? Probably not. Maybe next year, though. Like I said, “2008″ sounds cool. I will grow to love it.

I too am a fan of zee metal, Love cradle of filth, Early Metallica does indeed rock, St. Anger is sooooo bad, oh Metallica, what happened.
I like alot of grindy stuff more these days though.. i.e, the locust, dropdead..etc.

Kneg. I added you on AIM, I think, took me hours just to get it up and running.

Got me 3 legendaries, woot.

Kneg, threaded systems are love…except on Wordpress, where they seem to be the Devil’s SSF’ed Waiterbetty…fairly cheap to come by when in desperate need of satisfaction, easy to lay down in a bedded format, but rather ugly to look at.

Josh

I agree on what you said about Metallica, their late work just sucks for the most part. Do you also like Melt Banana?

I don’t care much for Cradle of Filth, but I do like “Nymphetamine Fix”.

My msuic preference is a little mixed and matched. Cannibal Corpse, Pink Floyd, Foundations, Aerosmith, Foo Fighters, Scorpions (I love 80-90s rock), Skid Row, Queen, Jim Croce, Bob Seger, Snot, Pixies, Blue’s Traveler, Alice Cooper, just to name a small number of my too many favs, as well as modern and classical composers (example, Michael Giacchino), amient work (Enigma), classic country, and very, very little rap (Vanilla Ice (yes, I actually like Vanilla Ice, old Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Biggie, and little else).

nork: Yeah i do, Havent heard alot of melt bannana but from what ive got(a couple of splits) they’re really good.
And alot of your faves happen to make up most of my cd collection, plus everything from From First To Last to T.V on the radio And the human abstract.
Saw Alice Cooper live last spring, best show I’ve been to yet.

I only like flavor of the month bands and contestants from American Idol.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 01/08/2008 3:56 PM EST

Melt Banana is just nuts.

I saw Alice Cooper for the second time this past September, first time being about 1 year before that. Alice Cooper would be ranked in my top 5 favorites of all time.

I remember growing up and going on typical family-of-5 minivan road trips across the country and instead of listening to “The Wheels on the Bus” my dad has Alice Cooper’s “Welcome To My Nightmare” album going.

I can’t check it since Myspace is blocked at work (which you guessed it, is where I am), but I may have a blog with some pics posted of the Alice Cooper show I caught just a few months ago.

If you type Emo into X-E’s search engine, you get pages of my posts.

Try it. I dare you.

Vey few of Metallica can please my ears, save for the very VERY early stuff where thet still sound kind of unsure how METAL is supposed to sound, therfore sounding rough and thrashy without any hint of “You guys are gonna eat this up even if it’s shit” pretentiousness. I can easily say they did lay the groundwork for the genre. Once Cliff went byebye- All sense of creativity and in a sense, quality just went out the window. The only time I hear Metallica nowadays is on the radio- and fortunately the play “Jump in the Fire” which you just can’t HELP but get rowdy on.

And yes, Slayer is awesome. In fact I like Araya’s voice more, now that he has gotten older. There is a beauty in uncontrollable noise, but there is an UNDENIABLE beauty in a voice that is crafted out of over 20 years of Vocal work.

and- I’ve geeked.
woo.

Well, turn it up!

Seriously, though, Little Brother’s sister-in-law knew Pantera when they were still playing the small halls in Texas, way back when.

Of my 15,000+ mp3s, 95% will be classic rock, metal, monster ballads, and anything in between, with that other 5% consisting of absolute random stuff, like Blondie, Madonna, Tatu, Men At Work, Luther Vandross, etc, as well as serenity soundtracks (example, Pure Moods), nature soundtracks, Chinese traditional orchestra, and a large chunk of that 5% consisting of Native American tribal music, powwows, flutes, ghost dances, etc. I love my Indian music.

Yeah, eclectic is definitely the way to go. Having DJ’d Goth/Industrial stuff almost exclusively for so long, it can be easy to get bogged down in one genre of music, but the good thing about goth is that it encompasses so many sub-genres. On my show and at gigs, I try to play a good mix of ethereal, darkwave, gloom metal, death rock, synth-pop, industrial, ebm, and a little of everything in between. All the bands kind of appeal to the same crowd, but they all sound totally different.

As for my own personal taste, I’m all over the map. I listen to all of the above as well as thrash and black metal, prog (something I’m getting more and more into lately), classic rock, blues, old country, and lately my newest obsession is The Carpenters. Why I didn’t discover them sooner I’ll never know. Maybe now I’m just old enough to properly appreciate them, but I can’t get enough of it. Just about the only thing I can’t stand is newer country and rap/hip-hop. I just can’t stomach the stuff.

Hey, wasn’t there word yesterday that we were getting a new blog entry today? If so, I guess it would be the first official new article of the year. I guess you could include this one, but it’s more of a “saying goodbye to ‘07/retrospective” kind of thing. I’m looking forward to some new content to talk about.

Personally- I’m a pretty dedicated metalhead. Doom,Death,Thrash… The only one I’m sketchy about is BlackMetal and only becuase I haven’t sampled enough to make a decision.
I’m not a big fan of the newer stuff- Three Inches of Blood is my newest love, Mostly cause of that old-school vibe.
But I ALSO love old school britpunk, rockabilly, Old Country, Bluegrass and… Lounge Music. I profess a love for Frank Sinatra that my BF thinks is a sacrelige.

Ghosted by kittymao @ 01/08/2008 6:58 PM EST

I love three inches of blood kittymao, deadly sinners is probably my favourite song of last year.

Ghosted by Joshc @ 01/08/2008 7:35 PM EST

Deadly Sinners came out in 2004, I think. That’s when I got into 3 Inches Of Blood, anyway. They’re from Vancouver and play Seattle pretty much monthly. Missed them the last time around, though I think they’re playing here again this week. Not 100% sure.

Anybody into Cradle Of Filth?

Ghosted by Chris Martin @ 01/08/2008 7:44 PM EST

I love a pretty wide variety of music. My hard drive is largely split between classic rock (mostly The Beatles and Queen) and synthpop, but I have quite a bit of new age Pure Moods type stuff, some classical, assorted pop and rock music, etc.

DJ D: Can you recommend me some good goth music? I love the stuff when I hear it, but I usually am in a club or something and not aware of what it is I’m hearing. Beyond stuff like The Cure and Siouxsie, and some “darker” music that isn’t strictly goth, like Rammstein and Depeche Mode, I don’t have much. I definitely have a preference for the more 80s/synth type stuff.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 01/08/2008 7:59 PM EST

In November I saw 3IB with GWAR- quite a great show. I try to see GWAR when i can.
As for Cradle of Filth, I don’t have much to say. I haven’t heard enough to build a reputable opinion- again, me and Blackmetal are not exactly friends. My knowledge in that area extends to Dimmu Borgir, Venom, Emperor and Mayhem. Which I find to be barely tolerable- save for Venom. Venom’s awesome- I used to alternate between them, Danzig 4 and Rammstein’s Mutter during my dark phase in College.

DJD – As the other comic nerd, it does look like DC is heading toward another Crisis and some of it ties into the ongoing Death of the New Gods saga. Essentially, it’s not looking to good for some of the heroes in the DCU.

Not sure if you’ve been following the Spider-Man storyline at all, but Joe Q. is hard at work destroying the past twenty years of Spidey continuity, so Marvel has that awfulness going for them right now.

What are they doing to Spidey? The last I read was the whole unmasking/Aunt May getting shot deal

Ghosted by Dan H @ 01/08/2008 10:27 PM EST

DJD – (Spoilers Ahead) They’ve actually had Spidey running around the whole Marvel Universe looking for a way to save his Aunt May. After being rejected by basically anyone I thought could help, Mephisto offers Peter a deal – his marriage for his Aunt May’s life. After some thinking on the subject, Mary Jane takes the lead and accepts the deal. However, both parties have to agree. When Peter accepts, Mephisto makes a whole bunch of changes. Aunt May is now fully healthy, Peter is now an unmarried “down on his luck” loser crashing at his Aunt May’s place, Harry Osborn is alive again and Spidey has returned to his original mechanical web shooters. Also, Marvel is stating that all of the previous stories still occurred but Peter and MJ never got married and no one remembers them being married. O, and the big Civil War event where Spidey unmasked? No one remembers the real identity of Spider-Man, even heroes like Daredevil who have known for some time.

Thanks for the info. I may have to head to the local comics store and check things out. Sounds like one of those stories you have to read to get it all.

jazzy, If you dig the 80’s/synthy stuff I would definetly recommend Clan of Xymox. Anything, especially the older stuff is good, but they’ve been around for a good 20 years or so and are pioneers in goth/synthpop type stuff. Also, check out London After Midnight. They stick to a fairly 80’s sound, but it’s much darker than most of that stuff. They do a great cover of “Sally’s Song” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Also, if you like Depeche Mode, check out Gebrauche Musik. They’re pretty much a poor man’s Depeche Mode, and are blatantly ripping them off, but still great stuff. Of course, I don’t consider Depeche Mode goth at all, no more than The Cure (my all-time fave band) or Siouxsie and the Banshees. All those guys just sort of got stuck with an audience that was largly made up of gothy kids.

Chris Martin, I’ve become a somewhat big Cradle of Filth fan in the last couple of years. If you want to check them out, I would suggest starting with the Cruelty and the Beast album, although Damnation and a Day is my fave of theirs. They often get lumped into the black metal category, but they’re sort of their own thing, combining classic black metal with an over the top, symphonic sensibility. Their stuff is often pretty grandiose and epic, with an orchestra behind them and everything. It’s pretty well produced, and Dani Filth does stuff with this voice that I’ve never heard anyone else do. He pretty much uses 3 different voices and layers them on top of each other. Dimmu Borgir is the only other black metal band I can think of that does the same type of stuff. If you want to check out proper, old school genuine black metal though, I would suggest all the other ones that kittymao mentioned.

jjwspider, Wow, I didn’t know that the Death of the New Gods thing was involved, although I’m not surprised. Since I essentially didn’t pick up any books at all for almost 3 years a while back, I’m going back right now and just getting caught up on all the Bat books and also Countdown. I read all of Infinite Crisis, 52, and all the related books, and I’m about caught up enough in my reading to start Countdown (I own almost all the series so far even though I haven’t read any of them yet). Thanks for tipping me off to the Death of the New Gods. I’ve been trying to keep up with Wizard Magazine too, but I’m like 4 issues behind. That’s where I get most of my news about what’s going down.

As for Spidey, since I’ve been away for the books for a while and I’m playing catch-up, I’m pretty much just focusing on DC and then I’ll move on to some independent stuff and then tackle getting loads of Marvel trades. Between everything that’s happening with Spidey, the whole Messiah Complex thing with the X-Books, and not to mention the Ultimate-verse, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. You’ll kill me, but I haven’t even read Civil War yet. I do have a pretty good idea of what’s going on over there though just from reading Wizard.

Oh my god, what a lame way to set things back! I read a while back that there were rumors that they were going to find a way to restore his identity, but a deal with Mephisto? You gotta be kidding me! And the whole marriage never happened?? Oh lord. I do support the idea of going back to handmade web-shooters though. I didn’t like the idea that suddenly he developed organic ones out of nowhere. I guess after DC came up with the whole Superboy Prime punching thing, Joe Q. decided to come up with something similar for Spidey. I still think DC did it better, even though it was kind of a cop-out. Still, with the way they explained things, anything in the whole DCU can happen now. Spidey’s deal pretty much only affects him and the people around him from the way it sounds. I can’t wait to hop back on to Marvel and get caught up. I’ve actually got to go all the way back to House of M and Avengeners Disassembled and start from there. I’ve missed out on a lot in the last few years.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/09/2008 1:01 AM EST

Excuse me while I totally geek out here.

That Spidey storyline? Utter crap. It completely screws up continuity not just in Spidey, but throughout the Marvel Universe. I don’t even know where to begin. If you’re really interested, I’d suggest checking out the link.

I personally gave up Spidey after the whole Norman Osborn fucked Gwen Stacy, who gave birth to the Green Goblin’s twins thing. I completely lost interest in the character with the stunt unmasking in Civil War. I was mildly curious when I first heard about One More Day, but now that I’ve read it I’m done again until the inevitable re-re-re-vamp in a couple of years.

Back to non-geek-out mode.

Ghosted by Chris Martin @ 01/09/2008 1:31 AM EST

Yeah, the unmasking really pissed me off. That was just ridiculous. I’m glad they found a way to reverse that, but the way they did it is even more ridiculous. I mean, if we want to read a book about Peter Parker being a frustrated, unmarried guy hanging around with Aunt May, that’s what the Ultimate Universe is for. I mean, wasn’t that the whole point of that anyway, so they could reboot everything for people who want to jump in can get a frest start without being bogged down with continuity? How many times do we have to revamp something? Let it be, already. If they wanted Peter to be a single guy again, there’s a million other ways to do it than a cop-out, reality changing stunt. Oh well, I’ll still buy the books anyway. I’m a sucker. I just want to see what they come up with next. I keep buying these things, and keep complaining about them. The thing is, occasionally something really cool comes along that kind of makes up for it.

I still say Y: The Last Man and Fables are 2 of the best comics on the stands today. God, I hope they don’t cast Shia LeBouef in the Y: The Last Man movie. That’s the current rumor. I’m just so sick of him at this point. Shia, you and Micheal Bay have already tainted Transformers for me. Stay away from my comics, please. And while you’re at it, try not to fuck up Indiana Jones.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/09/2008 2:10 AM EST

DJ D: Thanks man! I’m really digging those bands, especially Gebrauche Musik. They sound pretty different from Depeche Mode to me, but I listen to a LOT of Depeche Mode and other synthpop, so it’d have to be nearly identical to sound the same to me. But yeah, totally digging this stuff :)

Ghosted by jazzy @ 01/09/2008 2:14 AM EST

jazzy, No problem. You might want to also check out VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berserk, and Project Pitchfork if you’re looking for something a little more dancy.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/09/2008 2:52 AM EST

Yeah the Spidey thing has really pissed me off too, its not that I don’t like the new direction (I love ulitimate spiderman) but could they have picked a dumber way to go about it. Entire stories that were based around his identity and marriage still happened but people just forgot, give me a break. Does Tony Stark remember letting Spiderman and two other people live with him but forgot who they were. Just really dumb when they could have done any number of other things to get rid of the marriage. And why get rid of the unmasking, first it cheapens civil war as once again we are promised a huge event that will change everything only to have everythign return to the status quo once its over. Plus it didn’t even last a year, you could have had a lot of cool stories come from the unmasking but instead they are all lost so you can go back to the same old stories of ohh no will the villan unmask him or be stopped at teh last second. If I wanted a don’t think about it just enjoy a stupid fluff story I would read Marvel Adventuers Spiderman which is written for eight year olds.

Ghosted by Rob @ 01/09/2008 11:36 AM EST

Rob – I think the Marvel Adventures Spidey may be the way to go now days. If nothing else, we could pretty much be assured that he won’t be striking any deals with devil in the book.

The whole story line just annoys and frustrates me to no end. I’m a big Spidey fan (hence the name) and just can’t believe that the character of Peter Parker would actually make the deal they had him commiting to. I’m pretty sure Uncle Ben would be rolling over in his grave right now. Seriously, does anyone think Uncle Ben would have sacrificed his love for May to save his dying mother/father/etc? I also admit that I’m a BIG Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider fan and wish that had stuck with that storyline back in the day. If nothing else, they would have gotten the single Spider-Man Joe Q. has been pushing for all this time.

DJD – While you’re checking out a lot of the DC books, make sure you pick up the Blue Beetle series. The scripting is quick and fresh, the artwork is pretty good and the story as a whole really reminds me of some of the early Spidey adventures. Easily the best book since the Irredemable Ant-Man.

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 01/09/2008 10:35 PM EST

I have heard a lot of good things about Blue Beetle and have been given some thought to checking it out. It’s probably not the kind of thing I would pick up every month, but I’ve thought about getting it at some conventions or something. I am really digging the Booster Gold series though. It’s the kind of thing I normally wouldn’t be interested in, but I like the time travel aspect of it, and ever since he was such a big part of 52, I kind of got interested in the character.

There’s a big sale coming up near where I live. Every Feb. a store up there has a 3 For $1 sale, where they clean out their old inventory. it starts out at 3, then a few hours later, goes to 4, and then eventually, by the end of the day everything’s 10 cents each. Of course, by then everything’s been picked through and there’s not much left. My cousin and I go every year and we’re usually outside first thing in the morning waiting for them to open. God, I can be such a dork.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/10/2008 12:29 AM EST

That’s a pretty sweet deal. I have one around where I live that is always sitting out older issues at 50 cents a piece and I’ve managed to pull quite a few older back issues out – including some of the original Booster Gold series (and the new one is quite good), ROM, Justice League International and GI Joe – among others.

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 01/10/2008 11:05 PM EST

ROM!!! Man, that brings back memories. I used to love me some ROM back in the day. I wonder if I can track some of those down still. I went out today and spent an ungodly amount of money on old Batman and Detective issues, just filling a lot of holes in my collection to get caught up in my reading. I got just about everything I needed, except for some of this “Ressurection of Ra’s al Ghul” crossover that’s going through the Bat books. Those are a little hard to find in the stores around here. I did go on E-Bay though and snag an old Detective issue I needed for $2.95 after shipping. Most of that was shipping, actually. The actual issue only cost 25 cents. Man, there’s so much that’s out right now that I wish I could afford to pick up every week. It’s freaking crazy. I could easily blow $50-60 a week if I picked up everything I wanted.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/11/2008 12:16 AM EST

I hear you – there is a lot of fun stuff being published that I would love to be able to buy off the shelf. I think my favorite titles right now are Nova, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Atomic Robo. If you’re looking for an awesome book – pick up Atomic Robo. It’s absolutley awesome. eBay can have a lot of good deals for the comic fan – I just picked up a lot of unopened packs of the Marvel Series one trading cards with the original holograms and recently picked up a large lot of the old X-O Manowar comics as I attempt to fill in some of the gaps with that collection. Unfortunately, I’ve started to pass on some of the newer stuff as I’ve found I can usually get it cheaper in the bins later.

Oh, the Sinestro Corps crossover was pretty well done too….

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 01/11/2008 1:19 AM EST

…and to think, I’m trying to get rid of most of my comic collection. Man, I am in the wrong damn country.

Ghosted by Guise @ 01/11/2008 6:47 AM EST

Guise – you should be able to get some decent deals on the trades that will be coming out for a majority of these events. Not sure if that helps at all….

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 01/12/2008 1:43 AM EST

jjw, it’s not so much getting the new stuff as I know a great vendor who orders stuff for me, it’s the stockpile of a comics I’ve got already taking up valuable space. 12 boxes of around 200-250 comics each. I can’t really justify buying anything new with them staring at me. :(

Ghosted by Guise @ 01/12/2008 1:59 PM EST

Guise, if you do decide to sell them, just make sure it’s stuff you can definetly afford to loose. I did the same thing a few years ago and sold most of my collection (around 13 boxes or so) and regret it to this day. A lot of of it was my Batman stuff that I cherished, and I’m now going back and buying all that stuff in trades. It’s going to take me a while to catch up and recapture all that stuff I lost. Make sure you get a good deal too. E-Bay might be a good way to go if you have the time and patience to slowly sell it in pieces. You’ll probably make more money that way than if you sold it in bulk. I sold mine all at once to the guy who owns the comic book store I used to work at and didn’t get a good deal at all (10 cents a book). At least it got a good home. Just make sure if you do it, you go about it the right way and don’t regret it later.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/12/2008 3:15 PM EST

Well, I will be keeping quite a few of the stuff, but I’ve got a lot of things that really I had for sake of ‘it was all that was left in the shop’, huge runs of Conan, Dr Strange, Ghost Rider, Marvel New Universe…I’ll definately not part with Hellblazer, that’s for damnably sure, I’ve been collecting that for well over a decade now. They’ll have to pry it from my cold dead fingers.

Ghosted by Guise @ 01/12/2008 4:12 PM EST

Guise – gotta agree with DJD. I sold a ton of GIJoe comics when I was younger and have regretted it to this day – primarily because of the memories I have with them and my older brother purchasing them for me. Thankfully, I have a side storage area that I can store a lot of my comics (almost 5,000 strong as I type now). I have sold off some pieces but my runs of Spider-Man and others aren’t going anywhere.

If you are selling some of them, you may also want to check Amazon.com. A lot of times you can post individual issues and make back almost cover price on some of the newer issues.

DJD – Sorry to hear about your collection, 10 cents an issue pretty much sucks. Given the amount of comic geeks on this site though, maybe we need to set up a trade area – I have a bunch of doubles that I wouldn’t mind parting with.

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 01/12/2008 10:35 PM EST

Guise, Yeah, I would hang onto Hellblazer like it was grim death if I were you. That’s one that I’ve always wanted to start picking up, but haven’t gotten round to it. I’m a pretty big Sandman fan though, and I think a lot of Vertigo’s stuff is about as good as comics can get. I’m the same way with Sandman, I don’t care how broke I ever get, I’ll never sell off my Sandman stuff. Eventually I’ll get around to picking up a load of Hellblazer trades and just jump into it. I think because it’s been around for so long and it’s such a big thing to get into I’ve kind of been putting it off, but I really want to check it out.

jjwspider, I had no idea you could sell your stuff on Amazon. Thanks for mentioning that. I’ll have to check that out now. Man, that really sucks about the G.I. Joe stuff. My cousin has almost the entire run of the original series only because he was buying it back when it originally came out. Most of that stuff isn’t really worth that much, but has LOADS of sentimental value and for some reason is near impossible to find outside of conventions. I think a “trading post” type of deal on here would be a pretty good idea. There are a lot of individual issues and even trades that I need that I end up having to just find online or at conventions because the stores around here don’t have them.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 01/13/2008 3:05 AM EST

The main problem I find is that I’m in the UK, there isn’t as big a collectors market here, so quite often the choice is eBay and pray or sell a job lot to a company.

I really need to go through the boxes and list them in a spreadsheet though. Oh boy.

Ghosted by Guise @ 01/13/2008 7:13 AM EST

Guise – If you need a database to use, I have a quick Access one that I’ve been using for years and I track the issue number, title, print edition, cover price, publisher and whether the issue is bagged and boarded or not. Sad, I know, but I have some valuable issues that I own plus it makes filling the gaps a lot easier. If you want a copy, just mention it.

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 01/13/2008 2:11 PM EST

jjw, funny you should mention Access…I spent part of the day building one for it, but needed to include a ‘condition notes’ and ‘grade’. I love me the Access, if I can find an excuse to use it, I will.

jjwspider, I’m going to have to make a new spreadsheet for myself pretty soon too. I’ve got that big sale I was telling you about coming up in Feb. and I need a new inventory/needs list printed up. The only thing is, I’ve bought so much in the past year and haven’t really kept track of it, so I’m going to start from scratch. I’ll just have to sit down one Saturday and devote a whole day to it or something. Of course, after I go to the sale and end up buying like 200 books or something I’ll have to just do it all over again.
