12/24/2007: Christmas Eve, 2007.

I have to get 20 hours worth of stuff done by 7 PM, so this will be quick: Merry Christmas! #24 is up! I hate stuffing mushrooms! The final AC entry may be a bit late, but since those are usually short epilogues, we’ll be okay.

Hope everyone has a great Christmas Eve, Day, Day After and Day After The Day After. Talk about your holiday adventures in the comments, from gifts to guests to food to reindeer.

I was tempted to go get some discounted Christmas snacks, but seeing as I already have enough candy and soda to give an elephant diabetes, I decided against it.

My decorations are still up, and I’m still listening to Christmas music. My gifts included two Christmas CDs, so I have a good excuse not to let it go yet :D

I briefly felt like taking my tree down today, but decided to leave it alone ’til the 1st. I want so badly to go blow some cash on really cheap Christmas stuff, but it would be highly unwise, since I only have 50 bucks and I really want some new shoes.

Guise: Hey, that’s the second-best part of Christmas! The after-Christmas sales are almost as good as the after-Halloween sales! :D This year we’ll be getting a tree topper, various lights and ornaments and probably some ribbons and whatnot to decorate the rest of the house that way I won’t have to worry about going out to get those things next year. Of course, we’re talking about buying a house between now and then so it’s possible those ornaments won’t make it though the move… at least they were on sale!!

I’ve discovered the third-best thing about post-Christmas is the lack of guilt over buying yourself things again. haha I want new clothes, dammit! But I have one more Christmas party to go to this weekend with the future-in-laws in Missouri, so I guess I’ll hold off on everything except the Christmas decorations. Boo.

Well don’t forget there are still 12 more days of Christmas! Why feel post-holiday blues! :) My decorations and tree stay up until Jan 6th.

Christmas was alright, got to see the family and got some useful stuff. Im glad to be back to my apt and sleeping in my bed tonight!! not looking forward to work tomorrow but what can ya do. Ohh and come on Matt i need the 25th up to complete my Christmas!!

Ghosted by Methoes @ 12/26/2007 8:38 PM EST

Oh man, keeping the tree up til the 6th. That drives me INSANE.

Not just this year, I mean EVERY YEAR.

Take down the tree, we are not Natalie Portman in Garden State. IT IS NOT CUTE AND ENDEARING

Ghosted by Knegative knows why it is done dont lecture him @ 12/26/2007 8:41 PM EST

The wife won’t let me take down the decorations yet, but I would if I could. I am as sappy and sentimental as they come during the weeks leading up to Christmas, but I go crazy when I hear Christmas music after the day is done. I can barely stand it the day OF. But fine. I’ll just hide in the other room playing video games while she continues to soak in a little extra holiday cheer.

Ghosted by Shelby @ 12/26/2007 9:17 PM EST

Mentioning Natalie Portman in Garden State, does anybody else think she did a better job of covering up her accent than Minnie Driver did in Good Will Hunting?

Ghosted by Old Jim @ 12/26/2007 9:24 PM EST

I don’t see how what I do with my own tree in my own house is anyone’s business. I’ll leave it up as long as I damn well please.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 12/26/2007 9:27 PM EST

At my last apartment building, there was one family who would take their tree down on Christmas Day. Seeing the tree out by the garbage before noon on the 25th…now THAT was a sad sight!

Ghosted by Moony @ 12/26/2007 9:35 PM EST

I usually leave mine up until after the 1st of the year. Tradition and all that.

Ghosted by Dan H @ 12/26/2007 9:38 PM EST

My mom seems to think that she has come to a compromise with me. She says she’ll take it down New Year’s Day, this year.

Not good enough. I like the way this person Moony is describing thinks :P

Ghosted by Knegative @ 12/26/2007 9:43 PM EST

So, just out of curiosity, does anyone on X-E either celebrate, or personally know anyone who celebrates, Kwanzaa? I know there is something with green and red candles, and it lasts eight days, but beyond that I know very little and am willing to receive knowledge from the initiated.

Ghosted by Old Jim @ 12/26/2007 9:50 PM EST

Sorry I didn’t check in any earlier… been lazy about it, I guess.
I’m very glad that pretty much everybody had a great Christmas! Mine was pretty darn awesome, too, but I’ll save it for the fallout thread. :) I must say that Christmas at Grandma’s was great- nobody fought or anything. It was a good year.

Also, I’m so happy that you’ve decided to fight the good fight, Good Guy. I hope you can keep on going for years and years!

Ghosted by Rainbowfeet @ 12/26/2007 9:57 PM EST

Poor Kneg! You must need a HUUUUG! :D

Ghosted by Moony @ 12/26/2007 9:59 PM EST

Old Jim: I don’t personally know anyone who celebrates Kwanzaa, but I do know a bit about it. First, it’s a celebration of African heritage, and it lasts seven days, not eight, from the day after Christmas until New Year’s Eve. Each day has a theme, such as unity or faith, and families gather and do activities based on that day’s theme. It’s really neat. On one of the nights (I believe the 6th?) there is a huge feast where the family comes together to discuss what they are thankful for and what they hope to accomplish in the coming year. All in all, it sounds like a very nice holiday.

I didn’t have a large surplus of gifts to either gloat over, or to return this Boxing Day, so I spent today downloading old episodes of “The Man Show” off the Internet, if you can believe it… :-)

Side note: Am I correct in thinking that the etymology of the term “Boxing Day” means “putting gifts back in their boxes and exchanging them at the store”, or does it have something to do with pugilism?

Ghosted by Old Jim @ 12/26/2007 10:09 PM EST

I took down a couple of decorations today and packed away the Christmas movies and CDs but I can’t and could never take them down the 25th or 26th.
That being said, I couldn’t do it into the 1st or 6th either.
Too each their own.
I have never known anyone that celebrated Kwanzaa. Interestingly, it is most of my African-American students who make fun of it (for lack of a better term), etc.
I got some of the STAR WARS decorations on clearance at TARGET today. I still think I overpaid but I can honestly say they were going fast.
Jazzy, I will be at my old stomping grounds over the next couple of days so if you see a guy in a James K. Polk shirt, that’s me. :)

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 12/26/2007 10:37 PM EST

We’re definitely leaving out stuff up until the 1st. Family that we haven’t seen yet will be shuffling in and out of town all week, so there are a few mini-parties still to come.

Manimal: The tricky thing with the post-Christmas sales is timing, because they will keep slashing the prices every two days or so. (For Halloween, Target got to the point where they had stuff marked down to 90% off…insane.) But, of course, by then, there won’t be much decent stuff left.

We’ve been total slugs here today…just exhausted from the past few days. I’m working on the Fallout thread now, though.

Ghosted by Matt @ 12/26/2007 10:41 PM EST

Manimal: Awesome. I swear one day we need to arrange a meetup between you, me, and Andy (who lives in Brunswick).

The Manimal I knew a guy in high school that celebrated Kwanzaa, I overheard him talk about it once. Someone asked him what do you do for Christmas? And he said we don’t celebrate that, my mom has us celebrate Kwanzaa. And the other guy said oh really? I have never met someone that celebrates that! What do you do? And he said sit around, eat, talk, give each other presents, you know exactly like Christmas! lol!

Even though on a couple of kid’s shows I have seen them showing what people do on Kwanzaa and they all wore cliche African clothing, and they were sitting around a table dishing out biscuits, fried chicken, mac and cheese, you know southern soul food.

And about the clearance thing, there have been these expensive (for what they are) writing pens that are simpsons themed that when you click down the pen it talks. It’s a bart one w/ bart sayings and a homer one with homer sayings. 5 dollars a piece, and I am keeping them in the package! lol! I honestly didn’t need them but I told myself in the store, when I am going to get another chance to buy these cheaper then the usual price again?

I also got for a little under 3 dollars an LED usb powered clear plastic color changing christmas tree with a little star on top. It is neat, it’s plugged in right now. I can see Kuse having one at his work! Even though this one is small to scale with me, with him it would be about the same size as a Christmas tree. It’s about 4 inches tall I think (I am not good at estimating measurements)

Today I saw these they are called Margarita totes, they have the rimming salt and it’s like a Margarita kit, they are usually 20 bucks (according to the price tag) but now they are 5 dollars I might go back and get two, they would be good for next year (I don’t think that stuff gets stale, it’s all in bottles and stuff) for my two Aunts. Or just for me heh. I don’t drink much rarely at all but I like Margaritas (even though they are a girly drink imo, I am a girl sure but I am not girly by any means, all my clothes are men’s clothes and my hair is really short)

Anyway, here I go to push post just to see Matt post the Fallout thread lol! Even though I love adoring his presents every year!

I think i have everyone beat last year for leaving stuff up..tree did not come down till…are you ready?? May. That’s right what was going to be come a St. Pattys day event turned into may.

Yeah, I cheated and started my post for the fallout thread in Wordpad. But I probably wont be able to stay up late enough to post it tonight. At least I’ll have a head-start for tomorrow. :)

Old Jim
No, Boxing Day comes from England. It was traditionally the day which the rich masters would box up the leftovers from their Christmas Day feast and distribute them to the poor.

Although Now, Boxing Day is just a huge day for sales.

I probably won’t be up late enough to post in the fallout thread, and I’m driving home tomorrow…so it might be Friday! :)

Matt,
Oh yeah, I was a beneficiary of some of that 90% off Halloween goodness. Unfortunately, I couldn’t wait those kinds of savings because our store was already getting wiped out today. :(

I just got off the phone with my Aunt. Apparently there was some family hijinx at Christmas she didn’t go because she just had surgery but there was fighting and stuff!

And the gift card I got my mom, my Grandma thought I got it for her! I got this summer a little gorilla that is like a Valentine’s Gorilla that looks like it’s hugging something and I thought oh well I’ll slip the gift card in there and it’ll look like it’s hugging the gift card! I wrote on the tag to mom from Jodi (Hi I’m Jodi) $25 I hope you enjoy whatever you spend it on! (or whatever I wrote, it was something to that effect) Well my Grandma said to my Aunt over the phone I don’t want to hurt Jodi’s feelings (me being Jodi, still with me?) but I want to send this gift card back because she shouldn’t be spending money on me! She said she’ll keep the t-shirt but the gift card is going back.

My Grandparents announced that they didn’t want any more presents EVER because if they wanted something they would go out and get it and they have enough crap they don’t need more on their pile.

My Grandparents love the Portland Trail Blazers (being in Portland) and so I saw that t-shirt and thought hey that would be great for my Grandma and she wouldn’t mind. She thought the gift card I sent for my Mom was for her. I wouldn’t send my Grandma money! Wtf!?! That is a weird logic lol.

But I wrote in the letter the gift cards were addressed accordingly. I guess I should of been more specific. I should of duct taped that gift card to that Gorilla or something lol. Oh dear this family of mine.

My mom is on social security she is disabled so when your on a very strict income a little extra spending money is nice to go out to eat or buy something nice for herself. She can spend it on whatever she wants as long as it makes her happy. I don’t like telling my Mom everything because she is a blabbermouth but I want to tell her some things because she is always positive and supportive. She’s probably one of the most supportive. I don’t have many in my family :(

Hey Matt, are you ever going to do another advert calendar again? I miss those, I actually prefer them over the advent calendar.

Ghosted by Joe @ 12/27/2007 3:22 AM EST

Joe Matt said that he won’t do those anymore because he ran out of commercials to review. He got to the point of reviewing commercials that were just slightly Christmasey and that wasn’t good so he quit. He might do a commercial review now and again when he finds one that is Christmas themed but he doesn’t want to have to force it.

kittygirl: Sounds like you had a nice Christmas! I really enjoyed reading your post and it was so sweet & thoughtful of you to get those nice presents for your little cousins. I find it hard to believe that anyone would not understand why you were doing this for those little girls. I hope they enjoy their toys very much and I have the feeling that those girls are very lucky to have a cousin like you (although really calling you a cousin doesn’t seem as much the right word as calling you their Aunt!)
:-)

Looking forward to the fallout thread, can’t wait to everybody’s full lists of activities and goodies.

Mentioned way earlier, but I absolutely hated that gingerbread man GoPhone commercial, especially the end where the dad gingerbread man is just standing there looking stupid. It made me think of Digital Max and how I just want to punch him in the face.

Ghosted by nork @ 12/27/2007 11:15 AM EST

I liked the commercial..but then I’m partial to norm mcdonald.

Oh, I love Norm Macdonald.. just annoyed by the commercial.

Well, my family made it through the holiday without our usual “Airing of Grievances”, which was pretty danged nice not to have to yell and scream and cry for a change. Hopefully it will last and become a new tradition.

Can’t complain about my Christmas too much, except for the time spent in the car, but hey, it could be worse. Now I’m sitting here at work, killing time and watching the 1975 Stanley Cup Finals Game Six on my new video iPod Nano and feel all kinds of sneaky and cool. Hehe.

So I am wondering if December 25th never came for the gang since they didn’t get a new Santa. My theory is that the old Santa didn’t want to exhaust himself this year after the battle so he is saving his energy for next year in hopes a new Red Hatted wonder will emerge from the magical Advent Calendar.

I am also wondering when Mista Snowman will realize his wife is dead!??!

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe Kuse will take on the Santa gig so he can quit the corporate life!!!! I would think that being Santa pays well since they only have to work for one year and then they get to retire. That would be CHRISTMAS MAGIC!!! :-)

Ghosted by Cricket @ 12/27/2007 1:11 PM EST

I think Waiterbot will be santa for next year..afterall he is 3/4 santa already

Goob:
My grandparents didn’t want anypresents this year either.
In fact… their presents to us were a bunch of their older “memory-laden” items since they were going to take them to the thriftstore anyway…
I think they think they’re not long for this world.
I got two pieces of silver diningware from her, which made me happy- but very sad and confused.
