12/01/2007: The Ginger Family, and Reindeer Corn!
It’s a relaxing Saturday night. I’ve got the Christmas tunes going, with a side dish (or bottle) of Sam Adams Holiday Porter, a beer that I’m fairly sure was flavored with lumber. It’s nice and cold out, and fittingly, it really felt like December today. There’s a certain kind of cold associated with December, and it’s got little to do with temperature. It’s just a thick, heavy-but-clean kind of cold. It’s a bitch when you aren’t in the mood for it, but when you are, the world is a tremendous place.

I was really going for a nice, ambient Christmas motif in the photo above, but I think the vague view of my oven and Sweet’N Low container might’ve killed the mood. Sorry.
New or not-so-new from Pepperidge Farm, it’s the “Ginger Family” cookie collection! Something about this whole thing resonates as an oddity. Maybe it’s that people-shaped gingerbread cookies always present a bit of guilt for those who eat them, and here, they’ve gone one step further by creating an entire family. I am willing to accept that most gingerbread men are cognizant of their ultimate fate, but what about their wives and children? Is our desire to snack worth turning these families’ worlds upside-down?
The cookies manage to be in the correct relative scale, with a big father, gigantic mother, and a son and daughter who are either really affable or merely conjoined twins.
Since I don’t particularly care for gingerbread cookies, I don’t have to spend the night arguing with my conscience over whether it’s okay to diminish this family’s size or not. Course, that begs the question of why I bought them to begin with. I have no good answer for that.

I recently wrote about how we chucked around four metric tons of Christmas decorations into the trash this year, in an effort to cleanse our souls and collective storage space. Now that I look around again, it doesn’t seem like we made much of a dent. There was just so much crap that had too much sentimental value to kill. Example: The piece of trash shown above.
I can’t remember where I got it, but I’ve had it for around a decade. I’m not even sure what it is. The plastic decoration stands around 4″ tall, and if I had to make a guess, I’d say it’s a roller coaster designed by someone who really wasn’t of sound mind to design roller coasters. We’ve got a million similarly nonsensical Christmas decorations swarming our apartment like immobile locusts, and though we made an attempt to improve our feng shui, my new stance is “fuck it.” I like my stupid decorations. I don’t want them to end up smashed at some hellhole landfill, with only toxic chemicals and dirty diapers to care for them. Christmas decorations, even ones that look like retarded roller coasters, deserve better.

Finally, there’s a new kind of candy corn in town, and it’s totally Christmassy. “Reindeer Corn” is a title that makes little sense to me, but that’s what they’re calling it, and I suppose it’s up to us to justify why. What do they
mean by “reindeer corn?” I’m putting this question to all of you. All of my answers are scatological and sound like they came from a five-year-old.
The red, green and white candies are a bit bigger than traditional candy corn pieces, but they taste just the same. I’m no fan of candy corn, but they look great in a tabletop candy bowl. It’s okay to buy candy for purely decorative purposes, right?
This is your SNT. Are you here for your SNT?
EDIT: Advent Calendar: December 2nd is now active!

I like that decoration thing even though I don’t know what the hell it is. I think it would be delicious if it were edible.
I love how everyone is getting so excited about the Advent calendar and the holidays in general. It gives me a wonderful feeling inside.

So am I just no fun because I don’t like one holiday’s candy being misappropriated for another holiday? Halloween Peeps? Christmas Corn? I think I even saw some sort of a christmas themed cadbury cream egg. Blasphemy!!
An obvious SNT topic: What’s the best holiday present you’ve purchased for someone so far this year? Mine’s kind of lame, but I got my brothers both D-cell mag lights. Something about the big mag lites always makes me happy.

If you drink smoked porter, it tastes like a barbecue, not barbecued meat or barbecue sauce, but the smell that comes from a barbecue grill, odd but tasty. Do you like any holiday foods though Matt? You don’t like egg nog, gingerbread, candy corn, pumpkin pie, and nearly everything else holiday themed.

Reindeer Corn? Seems more like Reindeer droppings to me, yet this coming from someone who thinks all Christmas candies should taste like peppermint.

Posted by

Does seem odd when you list them out, but I do like the nog! I don’t hate the other things, just not a big fan of them. (Except for pumpkin pie…blech.) I grew up in an Italian household. More salt than sugar.

What the hell is that decoration? A Christmas rollercoaster? Shouldn’t it have Santa on it? Does it light up or play music or something? Also, regarding Christmas-y foodstuffs, I saw at Target a ‘Gingerbread Soda’ by Jones. Hard to find, though, even in Target’s weird soda section. Tastes good, if you like gingerbread. Kinda like ginger ale, with less bite, but with nutmeg & cinnamon & stuff. Good. … Uh … Happy SNT! Happy December, Matt

I don’t like many of the “traditional” (for our family at least) Thanksgiving foods - sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, stuffing, etc. It’s okay though, it leaves more room for my simple feast of turkey, mashed potatoes, bread, and of course lots and lots of GRAVY. I do like the pumpkin pie though. And gingerbread.
Hmm…I hate eggnog, I hate candy corn, I can rarely stomach Peeps, I can leave the Cadbury eggs.

I was eyeing up the Ginger Family yesterday. I decided to head over to the VF Outlets after class just to enjoy the Christmas shopping ambiance. There’s a Pepperidge Farm store in there, and one wall is filled with discounted Goldfish crackers of every flavor imaginable, and the opposite wall is filled with ever flavor of Pepperidge Farms cookie possible. Then there’s all kinds of other crazy shit they make like foreign stuff and everything. It’s pretty sweet.

Happy SNT, all. I’ve got a fire going and sitting by the Christmas tree. Going to get with some friends later for a view of Nightmare before Christmas. Then tomorrow we’ve got a big Lessons and Carols service at my church…

I think it’s sort of sad that reindeer corn looks more Halloweeny than actual Halloween candy corn. I mean, look at it. What you’ve got there is a bowl of severed witches’ fingers, complete with bloody stump. It’s uncanny.

I’d chuck that god awful “decoration” riiiggght out. I suppose I’m a Grinch when it comes to old decorations; for some reason they depress me and fill me with somber rage, which I forgot was possible until I laid eyes on that. Death to infidel Christmas decorations!

A lot of our decorations come from thrift stores, and I can’t help but feel like I’m honoring the dead by keeping them. Yes, this shitty roller coaster wreathy thing…it’s a tribute.

Other Matt: I’ll respond to the Xmas gift thing!
Since I’m college freshman and therefore have no money, I’m making my friends a DVD slideshow of us through the years, including hidden easter eggs on the main menu. And for my sister, since she has a tacky shot glass collection, I bought her a “Blue Suede Shoes” shot glass. It’s pretty exciting.

Today’s post had an awesome balance of red, green, and white, what I consider “traditional Christmas colors.” Awesome.
My guess for reindeer corn would be corn you feed a reindeer, but that’s not nearly as funny as anything poop related.

Matt,
Long time reader first time poster. Reindeer corn is a play on “deer corn,” which is what you put in “feeders” out in the woods to attract deer when you’re hunting them. Someone somewhere at the company who made those thinks they’re hilariously funny and knows no one will get it…

Happy SNT everybody!
I got the majority of my shopping finished today! It’s all sitting next to me and I want to start wrapping but I have a paper to write for art history that I should really be working on
I love all the gifts I’ve bought so far. My favs are probably the Flight of the Conchords DVD set for a friend, a Slurpee Drink Maker for some cousins (on sale today at Target) and a cool tea set + giant canister of Poppycock for my Secret Santa partner. Plus some others I’m keeping under my hat, just in case.
BTW, seeing The Mist and Best Buy $4 DVD sales? Not a good combo. I can’t believe I actually bought The Sweetest Thing. It’s one thing to watch it in secret whenever it’s on Comedy Central, but to actually buy it, that’s a new low.
So the only people I still need to buy for are the brother, and two boy cousins. Girls are so much easier to shop for! Anybody have any suggestions for gifts? I’m hoping to go beyond the same old video game/Lego route but I suppose things are classic for a reason.

reindeer corn is what sants gives to his reindeer to make them fly in an old christmas claymation i have…he gets them from the spirit of winter or something weird like that
As clumsyonice said, you’re thinking of “Santa Claus is Coming To Town,” where the Winter Warlock gives it to Santa’s reindeer to make them fly.
This also comes into play in “Rudolph & Frosty’s Christmas in July” a R-B Sequel movie that incorporates the first “Rudolph” anbd “Frosty” cartoons, along with “Froty’s Winter Wonderland” and “Jack Frost.” The magic feed corn is again referenced as it makes the Circus fly at the end. Watch the ABC Family Rankin-Bass marathon on Xmas Eve and you’ll see all of these specials.
As for that Roller Coaster decoration…holy crap, if you want to get rid of it, I’ll take it! Name your price!!
I gotta say, I’m getting really giddy about the Advent Calendar this year, and this comment may or may not be a way for me to check if it’s past midnight in X-E land. (aka… Eastern time zone? I’m terrible with those)

The holidays are crazy for me, because I LOVE holiday foods. I love pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, etc. However, candy corn is more of a take-it-or-leave-it for me. I’ll dig into those Candy Cane Hershey’s Kisses instead. (I’m so happy they’re back, one of the few returning items from last year’s candy cane-like candy frenzy.)
Oh, and I finally got to try a Cranberry Splash Slurpee this morning, on my way back from the bank. God, that was some good stuff. Tart, but not too much so. It was 40 degrees this morning, and I still gulped it down. I might have to get myself some more of that before January.

And Mista Snowman seems to be saying “Holiday” more than Christmas this year. What gives? He’s succuming to the perculiarization of Christmas too?

I was finally able to show my lady Scrooged earlier tonight. I know it may be hard to believe, but someone, someway, she had lived the first twenty-five years of her life without that pleasure. Well, I guess considering the movie didn’t come out until 1988, the first six years were going to be Scrooged-free no matter what she did. I guess I can’t hold that against her. She really liked it.
I also finally found Pomegranate 7-UP earlier today when we were grocery shopping. I haven’t yet sampled the “superfruit” infused beverate, but I have went to the refrigerator around 27 times to gaze at the bottle and be reminded of my great success in locating it.
Oh, one last thing. My “gingerbread” story. Around four years ago my lady and I began living together in my old apartment. After a year or so she began pestering me (in a loving, totally non-annoying way… in case she reads this) to buy a house. I couldn’t blame her. I didn’t love the apartment either, but at the time I lacked the funds to purchase a home. Hell, I had a very had to time justifying buying an HDTV. So, in one of my most inspired moments, while grocery shopping nonetheless, I spotted a Gingerbread House Kit. I quickly snatched it up and gave it to her as an “early” Christmas present.
“You said you wanted me to buy you a house,” I said, fighting back a grin.
It is funny how a random idea I had in a store, when walking buy a random product, became one of her favorite “us” memories. I guess even I can get something right once in a while.
Merry Christmas and Happy December 2nd all!

dohopoki, totally agree. I woke up and of course my first thought was to check on the 23 Mystery events while I’d be asleep (damn timezones), so sitting down blurry eyed to see Lipton as a bear and then…cold, steely rabbit eyes standing in the window.
Matt, scary cool, very much so. Amazingly addictive too.
And on Gingerbread, these were on sale at Halloween from the bakery chain: woooh, scary. The best part was that the sugar icing picture was held in place by ‘red’ jam so that it bled a little (not sure that was intended!).

Hiya, Matt. It’s Christmastime and of course, time for my yearly appearance here. Wish I had the Internet connection to come visit more often, sigh. Anyway, just wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you and X-E at this time of year, and hope you have a really great Christmas.

Oh yeah, and the Advent Calendar is AWESOME thus far! As always.
You rock so hard.

I HATE candy corn, even the flavored ones. Lewis Black is right when he said all CC was made in 1911, we throw them away, and someone takes it from the dumpster, washes it, and resells it again every year.
I’m also not a big fan of Pepperidge Farm Cookies. I tried their new soft pumpkin cookies during Halloween, and it was the only “pumpkin” item I couldn’t finish. Yuck. If I ever eat a gingerbread cookie, it isn’t going to be by them.
I’ve been watching the various holiday cooking shows on Food Network. I even watched an “Edible Ornaments” cooking competition.

Magic Toy, that’s the kind of story that I wasn’t sure what the ending was going to be. It’s got “ahhh, this is so romantic” written over it but it could also have joke-backfire potential (”You think this is funny?”) too.
Like Trey’s cardboard baby thing in SEX AND THE CITY. Mrs. Manimal and I had a discussion (that went on WAY TOO LONG) about the merits/insensitivity of that action.
Glad to hear your story worked out.

Ahh, Reindeer Corn. I used to get little packets of it when I was a wee tot. I’ve grown up with the stuff. Here in Michigan, it’s a yearly tradition. God I just love to lay in bed eating Reindeer Corn for days on end. Without fail child services would come, that was part of the yearly tradition too.
Ok, sorry for the double post but I had to comment on the Reindeer Corn the moment I saw it mentioned and now that I’ve read today’s advent calendar update, I have to comment on it. Ok, the reference to the Reanimator was awesome. I don’t care if that horrid image of waiter Betty doing unspeakable things to Legotron is ingrained in my subconscious for the rest of my life, that there is quality humor. I also like the comparison between the stupid Lego tool thing to one of the droids no one cares about. But what I really have to talk about is how creepy this advent calendar is getting.
Do the bunnies remind anyone else of Frank from Donny Darko? Who is h. u. Are the bunnies from the same dimension as the fairy princess advent calendar? Can James Lipton be any cuter? What is that smell coming from under the sink? I know all of these questions will be answered but I’m sure even more will spring up along the way. This advent calendar is shaping up to become a true epic! I even feel inclined to re-write the entire tale in verse form; it’ll give Homer a run for his money.
That was an amazing story, Magic Toy.
Darth Poop, I had indeed thought of Frank. If one of these rabbits asks why Kuse or Knacks is “in that stupid Stormtrooper suit” I’ll probably have an aneurysm.
Last night I dreamed I made a MySpace account. Perhaps my subconscious wants to be friends with Knacks and Tigerboy?

This ‘dinosaur dracula’ thing has me very intrigued…
Oh, do not pose such questions! I shall only respond as though I were a child. Damn.
Of course it’s the mystical product reindeers shit. Geesh. Did you REALLY have to ask?
I am digging the hidden messages in the countdown, keep it up Matt, it has me very intrigued. And that rabbit is creepy as hell.

Have you ever been hanging out with a couple of friends when suddenly you wonder “How the hell did we get here?” That’s my feeling on the advent calendar. In a few short years, we suddenly have a cast of thousands, James Lipton, evil bunnies, a calendar from an alternate dimension and a sweet, sweet house. Our favorite toys are growing up! *sniff!*

Matt,
Good thing it’s relatively cheap and easy to register domains now, with places like godaddy.com; you used to have to go to the IANA and actually set up your own web server with its own static IP address… Are there going to be a lot more “hidden” URLs in upcoming Advent calendar entries? I’m really digging the Roarmarkablous James Lipton!

Did anybody else find a bizarre video ad for Ford featuring someone clipping a whole shitload of clothespins to their face at the bottom of today’s Advent Calendar entry?

Old Jim @ 12/02/2007 2:12 PM EST
LOL Old Jim you mean the “boredom hurts” ad? I didn’t notice it on the entry, but I’ve seen it in the blog before. Kinda creepy.
crassmonkey, the link to the jukebox is on the column to the right (I think it’s the right, I’m on Mobile now so it’s at the bottom). I don’t think anything new’s been added for 2007 as yet…I was hoping to hear some additions from the Jimmy Buffet Christmas album, myself.
Watching Jingle All the Way now. With apologies to Kneg, I’ve got to say it just doesn’t inspire the warm fuzzies The Santa Clause does. Perhaps it’s just that I have a fairly low Sinbad threshold.

I agree Squee I would take The Santa Clause over Jingle All the Way. Tim Allen > Arnold Schwarzenegger when it comes to comedy.

does anyone else think the rabbit’s look alot like kangaroos? i’m such an obsessive freak for hidden viral marketing so this dinosaur dracula thing has me all attached to the advent this year.

i don’t think reindeer corn was wisely titled. The company just needed something to do with the candy corn recipe sitting on the shelf all year except october.it snowed here so you bet I’m in that christmas feeling>You shouldn’t bet, though If you have a gambling problem. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER

FOB Danny, yeah I thought they looked very ‘roo like.
The whole Box 23 and DinosaurDracula thing has been keeping a lot of us…pretty near the mental breaking point this past week. The rabbits are everywhere man, everywhere!

first: hi everyone. i’m a year-round lurker who posts every once in a while but reads all the time.
second: i looooove this year’s advent calendar so far! i didn’t buy the princess one b/c, well, fairly obvious reasons. not christmassy enough. so i’m excited i still get to see its contents every day. also, so jealous of the new set pieces. i was looking at a playmobil porta-potty the other day that would be another nice addition. also, we have the lego a.c. so its always funny to see the characters comments on the pieces after we make fun of them at home too.
anyway, thank you so much matt for making every december even more enjoyable.

Someone else mentioned it before, but in the old tales of St. Nicholas / Santa Claus, he got his current mode of transportation after acquiring some magic ears of corn that would make reindeer fly. So I guess it makes sense.
“I hate it when people act cryptic. Do you think you’ve made yourself seem more interesting to me? Well, you have not.”
This can be used in my life all the time. I’m stealing it.

There’s nothing like a good snow to put you in the Xmas mood. I can simultaneously bake chocolate/peanut butter chip cookies, surf the internet, watch Harry Potter, and listen to my Muppets Christmas CD.

I just noticed the new headline on the main page. Best headline ever, man.
Mystie, I have a sad addition to your post. I have the Muppets and John Denver LP (that’s a record album for all of you Before Dressing people). I tried to show it to them and they didn’t know John Denver and barely knew the Muppets.
It’s official: I no longer identify with the students because…I’m old.
Finally, reading some of these other posts reminds me that I can never remember what happens from year to year. I have read them all (some of them twice, etc.) and love them all but it just doesn’t stick :(. Next weekend, I guess I will read them again but after that, I need to make myself a timeline/take some notes.

Well, we’ve seen octosquid on this site; how ’bout bunnyroos?
This must have something to do with the events concluding last year’s calendar, but jeez, it seems much more sinister.
