11/29/2007: 7-Eleven’s Cranberry Splash Holiday Slurpee!

Several days ago, a reader sent in word that something very special was being offered at 7-Eleven, and I’ve spent every night since driving over the bridge into Jersey, going to 7-Eleven, finding nothing, and paying a six buck toll to get back home.

Well, screw them! Today, I drove out to the only 7-Eleven in my own city, which is somehow four times further away than the one in Jersey. At least there were no tolls involved. I didn’t have high hopes because I always have to sweat for a week before 7-Eleven makes good on its promised promotions, but lo and behold, there it was: My new favorite Slurpee in history.

Unbelievable! Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash has been immortalized as a 7-Eleven Slurpee! Finally, we have an official, 100% legit holiday Slurpee!

Is it wrong that I pissed endorphins at the sight of this? See, here’s the thing: Every holiday season should have its own little things to make it special and memorable. There’s absolutely no guarantee that this Slurpee will return next year. I’ll be pissed if it doesn’t, but on the other hand, it’d help give 2007 one of its few exclusive holiday graces. We don’t pluralize “yesteryear” because the past just seems to blend together into one big crock of soup. But! If 2007 goes down as this Slurpee’s first and only at-bat, I’ll always remember it…not as a mere clump of “yesteryear,” but as a solid, tangible, special point in time.

Don’t know if I made much sense in that paragraph, but that’s what happens when your brain and fingers are jittery with Slurpee excitement.

PS: I can’t keep myself from photographically archiving the special times that I come upon a new Slurpee, but truth be told, 7-Eleven is just about my least favorite place to take pictures. Snapping photos in unusual places kinda comes with the territory of running a site like this, but doing it in a 7-Eleven always makes me nervous. Everyone stares. The customers think I’m on drugs, and the workers think I’m stealing things while on drugs.

Plus, it’s not like I have a good cover story should someone ever decide to ask why I’m taking pictures. Honesty is the best policy in most walks, but definitely not when the truthful answer is, “OH THIS, THIS IS FOR MY BLOG, MY BLOG WHERE I REVIEW DRINKS.” I usually pretend that I’m just randomly testing out the features on a “new” digital camera, but that doesn’t explain why I’m doing it in a 7-Eleven, much less why I’m concentrating such photographical experiments solely on the Slurpee machine.

The Slurpee is excellent. It tastes just like the soda, to the point where I’m convinced that there isn’t even any special syrup involved. Seriously, if you filled a cup with well-shaved ice and poured Cranberry Splash over it, I can’t imagine it tasting any different.

My suggestion? Head on over to a 7-Eleven at night, grab a giant Cranberry Splash Slurpee, crank up the car heat and travel around the neighborhood to look at all of the decorated houses. It’s fun to do this even without a holiday Slurpee, but when you actually have one? That shit’s the difference between an activity and an event, son.

Kryptonite Ice Slurpee!Mountain Dew Pitch Black II ICEE!

Back in a bit. Meantime, there’s this.

Woohoo, I get to post the first comment!

Matt, i’m envious. I live in an area bereft of 7-Elevens. I know, I know but such places really do exist.

Regular SM Cranberry Mist rocks! but the diet stuff tastes funny. Which is a real shame, because my mom is diabetic and last year she really got burned watching us down the Mist and raving about it.

Man I miss 7-11s. I am glad to see Waiterbot’s hack has returned.

Ghosted by kb @ 11/29/2007 4:05 PM EST

Posied: I like that word. “Bereft.” I must start using it. Also, yeah, SM Diet Cranberry Splash is iffy. I tried it, but it doesn’t seem to retain much of the non-diet version’s holidayness. It just tastes like diet Sprite mixed with Crystal Light.

Unfortunately I’m cursed with not liking carbonation. :( I try, because things like that Slurpee look so good, but it burns!

I love Waiterbot. He sounds like he’s in the Bot Cave or something this time.

A little over 24 hours until the first rum & eggnogs of the season! I’m rining in December 1st New Years Eve-style… Champagne and Christmas in the Stars blairing! Matt: can you PLEASE post the first Advent posting at midnight??? That would be so awesome!

Yay! Last time I was in the 7-11 (last week), they had the signs up, pointing to the possibility of a Cranberry Splash Slurpee, but it was not to be that day. I’m very glad to know it actually happened, and I can’t wait to leave the house to pick one up.

Okay. LiekI said a while back, replacing my Martinelli’s cider with the Cranberry slpash would be a sacrelige.
But- while getting hammered on Vandermint, I tried a sip of cranberry splash- and, I have to say… it’s not that bad!
I think I may have to give this one a whirl, maat.

Putting the lid on the Slurpee BEFORE filling it!! Matt, I say this with 100% proof and accuracy, you are a friggin’ GENIUS!

Ghosted by Nizz @ 11/29/2007 4:20 PM EST

Matt
Driving around in a warm car with a cold Slurpee sounds like an awesome idea! If my local 7-11 has this wondrous concoction I mayhave to do that!

Ghosted by Dan H @ 11/29/2007 4:21 PM EST

Who has ever filled a slurpee cup before putting the domed top on? That’s the whole purpose of its shape, so you can put more liquid into it.

i wet out to my favorite 7-11 and they told me they had never heard of such a wonderous and magical slurpee, then looked at me as if i was insane, but probably not as insane as the drug addicts who saunter in and take pictures of everything

Ghosted by vwarb @ 11/29/2007 4:43 PM EST

I also live far away from any 7-11 :( Shame, because I do love me some Cranberry Splash.

When you mentioned 7-11 the other day, I went Googling, but the only special event I found was something about an energy drink aimed at people with tattoos. Weird.

When I transferred to my current college, I learned that there are 7-11s in this town, but I’ve yet to find any. =( Maybe I’ll look after my roommate and I get $.25 wings at a local restaurant…

Ghosted by Ben @ 11/29/2007 4:48 PM EST

Someone mail me one, there are no 7-11’s in North Carolina. Why? WHY? WHY??????????

Enjoy a sip for me will you?

Ghosted by Fox @ 11/29/2007 4:50 PM EST

OMG, OMG, OMG!! I’ll be sooo pissed if the 7-11 near me doesn’t have this. It’ll be a good treat to have after the gym tonight!

Ghosted by DarkSideofBrightness @ 11/29/2007 4:51 PM EST

That. Looks. Incredible.

Ghosted by B-Dawg @ 11/29/2007 4:58 PM EST

This has been the day from hell at my work, so thanks to Matt and Waiterbot for helping to perk it up a little.

I am the blasphemer who hates SMCS, so I’ll just leave it at that. Now back to the conspiracy blog where I’ve been hiding the last two or three days… I’ve lost count.

Ghosted by Special K @ 11/29/2007 5:01 PM EST

I find the various 7-11 blog entries/articles both cool and depressing. Cool that they have stuff like this, but depressing that there are no 7-11’s here and none of the other convenience stores ever do anything special like this. We’re lucky when they get a new lottery scratch-off ticket or a new candy bar.

Stephan King’s Cranberry Mist Slurpee with giant six-legged berries that will drag you out of the store!

Glad I could pass along the tip! I told my wife when we were at 7-11 Saturday night, “I gotta see if Matt @ X-E knows about this!”

Giant six-legged berries that shoot Slurpee out their bottoms.

Darn it, I saw this at the 7-11 down the street from me, and they had the big sign, but no Cranberry Splash. Figures it would be good! I’ll just have to check in there next time I run to the bank.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 11/29/2007 5:34 PM EST

That just sounds better. The ‘other’ Lauren. Have I mentioned I love you? Make sure you honk twice and scream “I see lights” at each decorated house. It’s required. There is a 7 Eleven up the street from my house. :)

Ghosted by The Other Lauren @ 11/29/2007 5:47 PM EST

That dose look really good, Alas I don’t have a 711 in my home town.

Ghosted by mjgrass @ 11/29/2007 6:13 PM EST

I have yet to stumble across a 7-11 in TN…I did see one once when I went to California, but I couldn’t convince anybody to go with me.

Thanks for posting, Matt. I’ve had a really lousy day, and this made it somewhat better. (And I totally understand about the taking-pictures thing. My dad likes to take pics of the “forgotten South,” which basically means out in the country and in the ghetto…both places, I’m terrified we’re going to get shot.)

This has nothing to do with Slurpees or 7-11, but it has everything to do with Christmas and awesomeness. After finally seeing Christmas Vacation I thought Aunt Bethany seemed awfully familiar, so I went on IMDB and discovered the most awesomest of awesome things:

Aunt Bethany was Olive Oyl and Betty Boop.

I too relate the name of Stephen King’s “The Mist” with Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash…either that or ArborMist…..you just can’t resist the mist.

Yes! Matt: you have made another workday bearable! Cranberry slurpee: you are mine!

Ghosted by 616commando @ 11/29/2007 6:53 PM EST

I noticed that my local Target has Cranberry Splash on their drink fountain, which is cool, but a Slurpee? Wow! That’s incredible. Also, every year I drive around looking at decorations, going as far back to my childhood when my parents drove around and I sat in the back distracted about all the amazing things I was going to do with my Game Genie when I opened it Christmas morning.

Ghosted by Review the World @ 11/29/2007 7:23 PM EST

It’s too bad there aren’t man 7-11s in Canada, else I’d try that thing out…

Ghosted by DocDragon @ 11/29/2007 7:28 PM EST

Excellent! Now I have an excuse to get off the train at Park St instead of GC: the 7-11 across trhe street! The again, this IS Boston. My hopes aren’t high.

In related holiday-ness, when did dairies start making thirty different types of eggnogg? I’ve always seen the SoCo variety, and the cinnamon, but I was blown away by sights of pumpkin nog and–this I had to try–SUGAR COOKIE nog. Which tastes just like what it claims to. The wife thinks that’s weird. I think that’s a quart of awesome. :)

Luckily, I have a 7-11 less than a block from my dorm. Needless to say in a span of five seconds after reading I am enjoying one from the comforts of my room. I have yet to see the Pomegran. 7-Up though!

Ghosted by ksteeves @ 11/29/2007 8:03 PM EST

I wonder how well Slurpees sell during winter? Sometimes I get the urge but thats because I live in brutally hot Tejas.

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 11/29/2007 8:12 PM EST

Stephen King’s Sierra Mist — yeah, got a nice ring to it. I’d buy it . . . so long as I don’t get chased by other-dimensionally pseudo-spiders.

DocDragon – Where in Canada do you live? I’m in Manitoba and we have them everywhere.

I second the good Doctors’ lament on lack of 7-Elevens, but from the UK instead where there are none. How unfair.

I might try a cranberry slurpee…depending on how my sinuses are…i don’t want anything blatantly cold on my teeth with the sinus pressure…I cant find the Pomegrante 7 up for the life of me! my husbnad says matt is making it up

My favorite Slurpee of all time is Super Sour Watermelon. I remember when they had it I would go there all the time. I was about 11/12 so this was at least 6 years ago.

Well anyway the last day I got my favorite slurpee was on fathers day and I was riding my bike back with slurpee in hand, and I tried to take a sip of my slurpee while riding and I took a gnarly fall onto the concrete. My slurpee burst and I was more upset about that than hurting myself.

Man I really want some now.

Ghosted by Brett @ 11/29/2007 8:37 PM EST

After reading that I want one of these SO much. So I went to the 7-Eleven website and plugged in my current zip code.

“Sorry, we couldn’t find any locations near (postal code), North Carolina, United States.”

Dammit.

“Dear Jesus, I know I have sinned & done wrong. Please forgive me of my sin & give me eternal life. I now trust You Lord Jesus as my Savior. Help me to have a growing relationship with You, and to become the Christian person that you want me to be. In Jesus name Amen.”

I’m having images of being trapped in a 7-11 while giant slurpies fly around on fire as we try to beat them with broomsticks. Someone’s gonna have to be sacrificed. It can’t be Guise, Ben, Nizz, or kittymao. We need them to unravel the Box 23 conspiracy. Wait….what if all this is tied into the conspiracy? What if Matt’s sending us on wild goose chases all over town to find 7-11’s and Pomegranate 7-Up’s to give us clues. Oh shit, those both have 7’s in them! The Box 23 conspiracy is full of the number 7! I think X-E just blew my mind.

Oh, for the record, as far as the sacrifice, I’m recommending Special K. Sorry. Just had to be done.

So i finally broke down and bought the pom 7-up. it was mostly because both graocery stores in my neighborhood are out of the mist. by the way, definitely i know our area is now out of the mist and that they stopped producing it. this may be nationwide, so if you like the nectar of the gods known as SMCS please pick up as much as possible because i seriously almost started crying when the person ringing me up told them they wouldnt be getting anymore. the bastard in front of me in line had 2 bottles of it and i growled at him. fucker….

Ghosted by Leigha @ 11/29/2007 10:23 PM EST

Neat this kind of wants me to go to 7-11. I can’t find Sierra Mist Cranberry splash yet (I can’t even find Sierra mist except at fast food joints around here) But Wal Mart started selling the Pom 7up now. I only found it at Safeway before. Now I am just waiting for Sierra Mist.

I am not really looking for the gingerbread pop tarts but maybe next time at the grocery store I can look for them. I just keep on forgetting even though I have a small box of the pop tarts splitz (vanilla and chocolate) they are pretty good the filling tastes almost like pudding. I might have one right now.

I have a question, once a month or so my best friend and I stare at the Wii’s at Wal Mart or Best Buy or wherever, and he almost seriously tells me he wants to buy me one. I am not into the serious modern games they have I am into the fun games I play a lot of the older games.

Anyway I want to know, has anyone gotten the Simpsons Game yet? is it good? I got simpsons hit and run when it first game out I liked it. And wiiplay is a given right?

Man, our closest 7-11 is 40 miles away. :(

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 11/30/2007 12:16 AM EST

My closest 7-11 is a hundred miles. But coincidentally I’m going there for my monthly supply run tomorrow! :D Going to be hunting down some Christmas Crunch or Fruity Pebbles to make krispy treats, as well as other tasty things like Pom 7up. Yum!

Ghosted by Moony @ 11/30/2007 12:39 AM EST

So, Waiterbot sometimes sounds a bit like Gilbert Gottfried to me. Just sometimes. :)

Ghosted by Rainbowfeet @ 11/30/2007 12:46 AM EST

I’m close to several 7-11s (I even have one down the street from me), but I’ve never been a fan of Slurpees.

I may have to try it now.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 11/30/2007 12:48 AM EST

Where does Matt live again? He works in NYC, and there has to be more than one 7-Eleven in there…
