Well, I certainly shouldn’t expect that too many people are around this Saturday night considering my own disappearing act, but if you’re here, feel free to comment. What a weird Halloween season. I know it can’t just be me. I’m off to find my macabre mojo for a while, but I’ll be back later.

Matt, I know what you mean about this being a wierd Halloween season. Its the same way for me too. Im having a lot of trouble getting into the sprit.
Most of it is becuase it is my first year of college and I dont have as much free time as i did in high school.
To be honest, another part of it is that the Halloween countodwn ( which is sort of like myy version of an advent calender for halloween) a staple for me in the season, isnt around this year ( this is not directed as an insult twords you, merely an observation on my own part)
It also just seems like people just arent really into it this year.

WolfMan – our Halloween Superstore kind of sucked too, all I got was a lame coloring book, and even that was kind of forced.
The forecast for this week has highs in the 70s. What’s the point of trying to be Halloweeny in shorts?

I went to a church bazaar yesterday and bought a loaf of banana bread and a mini pumpkin pie. My mom bought a cute wooden pumpkin that lights up. Bought some nuts and jellies for my great-grandma. Mom’s been in the Halloween spirit this year.

I also bought some of that Edy’s Pumpkin Ice Cream Matt talked about. Can’t wait to eat it.

Yeah, weather probably plays a factor in all of this. We’ve had about four days of semi-fall like weather, but this week it’s back to highs in the 90’s. Halloween in Louisiana is always warmer than everywhere else, but this is ridiculous.

Can’t really get in the fall spirit when you’re running your air conditioner non-stop and sweating like crazy.

Since I am fresh out of the hospital, I am wrapped in a blanket and watching some rented DVDs. I FINALLY listened to all my friends and rented disc 1 of season 1 of Heroes. I curled up, expecting 4 episodes or so (I get 4 on every Gilmore Girls disc, and both shows are an hour) and after the 2nd episode, that was IT! Its over! What a rip-off! 2 eps??? I’m sick, here people! Dammit.

On the plus side, I liked it a lot….just wish I had a few more episodes now.

We went to a haunted house the other night. It was around 11PM and cold enough to see your breath outside. Perfect setting/atmosphere for scaring the frost out of our gf’s already frozen hearts. It was short, but really good for a haunted house attraction. Scary stuff.

We want to go to the haunted boat thing in Cincinnati next. Heard it’s pretty cool:

I baked banana bread and carved pumpkins this weekend. It was very crispy outside and I am definitely in the fall/Halloween mood. I also saw Jim Gaffigan this weekend and he was as funny as he should have been, which was very very funny. And I got to turn on my heater, which I love to do. This weekend gets an A.

Best treats we ever got, were pop corn balls from my grandma, who lived a mile down the dark road we lived on. Gradma’s house was usually about a third of the way through our trick-or-treating, it gave us a chance to warm up and gorge on home made popcorn balls! :) Then it was off for another couple of hours of trick-or-treating!

Has anyone ever used those special effects contact lenses? I want to buy some, but I am not sure who I should buy them from. Any companies online that are reputable? Comments? Suggestions? Thanks guys!

is anyone watching or have watched the 7:30 simpsons? OMG they referenced shamrock shakes! I’m sorry I haven’t seen this one (moving around and having problems makes me lack tv even when I need it most)

Matt did an article on contact lenses, mainer. I’d look it up for ya, but I’m busy working on an assigment.

I already got an extension on it, so gotta run.

Great news everyone! It’s going to get into the 80’s all this week on the east coast!

AllRight! :(

There was one guy in our neighborhood who worked for Pepsi, he gave out 12 packs between 9-10 each Halloween. It was normal candy other hours.
We had one who gave out McDonald’s certificates which was always good.
Worst?
Had to be Bit o’Honeys and (this is sure to cause some strife, but:) Popcorn Balls.
Popcorn balls are the devil! They don’t look that cool, and they taste like how I would imagine ass tastes.
It always made my brother and I groan when we got one.

Ghosted by Raechel @ 10/14/2007 11:56 PM EDT

That sounds like a great weekend, kb. It’s been cool enough here that we lit up the fireplace a few times, which is nice. We just got some pumpkins, and I spent the afternoon attempting to make papel picado with some old tissue paper I found lying around.
Muppet Baby, it’s funny that you would say that because I’ve got the two latest Heroes eps sitting on my recorder that I haven’t been able to force myself through. I started watching based on all the raves too and I really only love it about 25% of the time. I feel like I’ve invested too much time to give up now though.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 10/15/2007 2:08 AM EDT

The worst Halloween treat I ever got (and it was year after year. You think I would’ve learned my lesson at some point.) was a woman in our neighborhood who handed out miniature tubes of toothpaste and small religious phamplets.

She was nice enough, but it was like she was on her own personal crusade against everything that made Halloween cool.

Ghosted by Wukong @ 10/15/2007 2:44 AM EDT

My neighbors and I bought a slew of Halloween decorations for our party this coming Friday. My favorite is the 6-foot demonic clown with glowing red eyes. The thing is creepy as hell and I’m happy my neighbor is keeping him in his place and not mine. We also got a motion detector guy in a straight jacket who sits on the floor and shakes and groans whenever someone walks by him. Can’t wait to see people’s reactions to him. The fact that the weather in NJ this week is going to be full-fledged fall temperature only adds to the anticipation.

I’ve been struggling to get through the latest Heroes episodes, too. I loved the first season, but for some reason I just haven’t been too concerned with watching season two. Not sure why.

I have finally been getting into the Halloween spirit a bit too. The stress this weekend was major, but picking out a pumpkin and going to the apple orchard with my boyfriend helped me get more into the fall mood. Oh and I was at Target this weekend and on one trip my mom came with and being the nice lady she is, bought me an (very) early birthday gift. Garfield’s Holiday’s DVD!!! I must be lucky to have a mom who will still buy her 26 y/o cartoons. Oh and does anyone know where I could get a big blow up spider or some sort of other creature or animal? The bf’s parents have a huge King Kong they put on the roof each Halloween and his dad is sick of just Kong being there. Although they have a palm tree, it looked more funny then scary last year when they added the tree. Especially since it was windy so it looked like Kong was beating the thing up. So he is looking for a spider or Godzilla or something to put up there as well.

Hmm help with spirit. Maybe for next Saturdays thread you could all watch the same horror movie at the exact same time and comment on it on the thread?

Ghosted by NAte @ 10/15/2007 10:37 AM EDT

Goob I was watching when Wiggum mentioned Shamrock Shakes and having to wait until March. Then the debate of whether it’s actually minty or just vanilla with green coloring. Lou is wrong.

This year for halloween, I went to Sam’s and bought candy. I bought 3 packs of random, full size candy bars (each kid will get 1) and a humongous bag of “Wonka Mix Ups” that has Nerds, Sweetarts, Runts, Bottle Caps, and something else to offer. Snickers, Almond Joys, Butterfingers, Baby Ruths, Nerds (especially grape), and Bottle Caps were my favorite candies to get on Halloween.

I just hope kids these days are cool like that.

re: Heroes
I admit this season is a little slow but I find myself dissapointed at the end of every episode because I have to wait another week before I can watch more. I just really love the show that they could play 10 hours straight and I’d still be begging for more…..

re: Halloween spirit
across the street the neighbours put up a giant inflated pumpkin and lots of decore… they are close to the only ones who’ve done it though and normally the whole street is done up. It sort of put me in the spirit… this morning on the way home from some late night work I spotted 5 white and blue snowflakes in another neighbours window all lit up for the X-mas season… that ripped my halloween spirit away…

Ghosted by Primus @ 10/15/2007 11:15 AM EDT

Primus, feel that man. Target is starting to not restock the Halloween section but instead fill in yard reindeer and pinguins.

It’s strange but I confess that I started online Christmas shopping the other night and I lit the Yankee mistole toe candle to help get me in the shopping mood. I really do have problems.

Matt #2, I’m glad I’m not the only one. Though I had the same issues in season 1, they had to go and kill off one of the biggest reasons to watch and make it even harder to justify recording it in S2. I love some of the characters (Hiro, Claire) but the show is just so tedious. Reaper and Dirty Sexy Money have both entertained me way more so far this season.

A comic strip named Lio. Read it. Love it. Click my name for Sunday’s strip about Hallowe’en stores. The strip is like old-school Addams Family and Far Side all mixed up like a Wonka formula.

It’s sad really… I’ve been coming HERE trying to get some scrap of Halloween spirit! Each day, checking… soon, my bats!
Year after year, as you know, XE has kept the homefires burning. However at this point I am more concerned with Matt’s well-being than the site’s… I mean our man is obviously not himself! Have you checked yourself for a fever, Matty? I perscribe 2 peep bats and an hour in a Halloween superstore. Or a corn maze.

In the meantime I mashed up Whodini’s “Haunted House Of Rock” with “Salem Girls” by Big D and The Kids Table, and that sort of helped. I’ll try and post a link to the mp3 tonight. Maybe it’ll help, a little. Someone. Somehow.

Fuggin Christmas decorations… puh-LEASE! It’s a precious time of year, OK? Lets not fricking WASTE it! Think of Bobby Boris Pickett. This is the first halloween that he is not among the living. Ruminate on that- he’s crossed over to hang with the OTHER-SIDERS for reals!

I find that the Halloween Jukebox definitely helps get me in the Halloween mood. The weather in MA was definitely killing the fall buzz for a while there, but Fall seems to have actually arrived. Plus, I’ve been making weekly Target trips to see what’s out there and picking up various DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-Ray horrow movies (”Halloween” on Blu-Ray, while not as “Blue” as the Dean Cundey-approved Limited Edition DVD, is pretty damn sweet).

This weekend I have a costume party with my girlfriend. I think the vast majority of her friends are going to dress as things that are completely *not* spooky, but oh well. I’ll try to represent for the bizarre and twisted crowd.

And where the Hell is “The Great Pumpkin” this year?

Wow.. I mangled my typing in that last post. Sorry about that.

This is off topic, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any good websites that explain how to make avatars and fan vids? I see all these neat music videos online that fans have made for their favorite TV shows, and I would love to know how to do that!!!

I decorated my balcony for Halloween and later I will attempt to bake a cake! First though, I must continue to watch season 1 of Heroes! I decided to do whatever I want to do today since tomorrow I am back in the hospital… Boo that.

You know what is really going to suck the life out of Halloween?? Daylight!
The new system for daylight savings time has moved the “fall back” date into November instead of the traditional weekend before Halloween. Trick or treating in the daylight is like celebrating Christmas in Australia. (ok, maybe not the best analogy, but has always just seemed wrong that its summertime there during Christmas!!)

Ghosted by mowntandew @ 10/15/2007 4:01 PM EDT

The lack of time change isn’t that bad. It’s basically dark by 6:30.

Ghosted by Pete @ 10/15/2007 4:05 PM EDT

….And yeah, must be interesting to have a Christmas barbeque in place of Christmas dinner.

ZekeIt’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is airing Sunday, 28 October. At least, it is here.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 10/15/2007 4:09 PM EDT

Depends on where you are at in the time zone. I think its still pretty light out up until 7 here. Don’t get me wrong, it will GET dark when the kids are trick or treating, but it won’t be dark the whole time. It only runs from 6-8 p.m. here.

Ghosted by mowntandew @ 10/15/2007 4:15 PM EDT

Aw Muppet Baby that sucks that you have to go back to the hospital tomorrow :(
Primus, I was referring to a certain occasional guest star with a certain classic scifi show on his resume. I’m still behind a couple of eps so I can’t speak for any further developments but I thought that was lame sauce.

I’ve been reading this strip for a few months now, and really enjoy it for it’s Addams/Far Side overtones.

Hmmm…. All Hallows’ Barbecue? If the weather stays this nice, it might happen. But, I know I’ll be sitting on the porch, with a bowl of hot soup, giving candy to shivering kids, just like last year. Started on laying in my candy supply with two bags of pinata filler. Always a good foundation to build your treat supply on. What’s your basic mix?

Ghosted by kingklash @ 10/15/2007 5:24 PM EDT

Squee- Sorry for your shitty week. :0( Thanks for the good wishes.

I just finished baking a cake for the first time…it sure don’t look pretty, but hey, I am sure looks don’t affect taste!

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 10/15/2007 5:46 PM EDT

It’s hard to be macabre when it’s mid 70s-low 90s outside in October. =(

Ghosted by Metal Misfit @ 10/15/2007 5:58 PM EDT

I can see another reason people may be having ‘blahs’ about Halloween this year…it’s on a Wednesday. It’s hard to get enthused about a day when it’s followed by two more days at work.

I bet next year people will have more Halloween spirit. So, for those that are experiencing a subdued Halloween, maybe you should take the opportunity and have a quieter, more reflective Halloween, rather than forcing yourself to get in the spirit.

In other words, rest up this year…cuz for the next 3 years (Thur, Fri, Sat) Halloween will be a party! I’ll be expecting all of you to take four, three day weekends!

Ghosted by HauntSpot @ 10/15/2007 6:24 PM EDT

HauntSpot: That’s a nice way to put things in perspective. Maybe not all Halloweens have to be no-holds-barred bashes. As for me, Halloween is already pretty subdued in my neighborhood ‘coz of a lack of kids. Maybe tonight or tomorrow I’ll carve a jack-o’lantern or write up a nice halloween story to share with my fellow X-E-ers.
In short, Halloween only comes once a year, and we ought to enjoy it before it’s gone. People have been anticipating halloween on this site for months. Let’s not waste it!

Ghosted by Hoverbored @ 10/15/2007 7:05 PM EDT

Great ideas Hover,

Here’s what I did this weekend that may help others…I had to do some ‘Halloweeny’ illustrations , so to get in the spirit I bought some pumpkin scented tea light candles and put on my favorite Halloween scary sounds CD. After 30 minutes, I was more than ready to hand out some candy.

Here’s a horrible confession…my favorite Halloween scary sounds CD is a Martha Stewart’s Halloween. (Actually, I don’t know the exact title as I burned it into an MP3 that I named MarthaDoesHalloween.mp3) It’s actually pretty good.
