My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

I’m walkin’ with dinos – WHOA OH!

It was either whim or destiny that made me buy those tickets to the Walking With Dinosaurs live show many weeks ago. Based on the CG faux documentary of the same name, it all went down last Saturday night at the Continental Airlines Arena...better known as the Meadowlands.

I'm a huge dinosaur nut, but I admit to a certain level of apprehension as the show approached. Somehow, my dino love blinded me to the very obvious fact that a circus starring audio-animatronic dinosaurs was intended for children. As the show has been traveling to and fro recently, a number of reviews sprung up online to confirm this. Dinosaurs are great, but going to this thing was beginning to feel like I'd just bought tickets to Disney on Ice or some shit.

I freely confess that I did everything in my power to get out of going, but my girlfriend wasn't having it, for two very important reasons. One: I paid 150 bucks total for our tickets. Two: This marked maybe the third time in recorded history that I made plans for us that were outside the realm of going to a buddy's house to get conked and pass out.

So, we went. We went to see dinosaurs.

And the show was...good, I guess. No, it was good...it was just a little odd. I guess that's par for the course when you're packing sports arenas and parading robot dinosaurs around, and I don't know what I was really expecting, but something about the whole presentation just felt mighty strange.

The general "storyline" had us time traveling to different prehistoric eras to see how life and land evolved. ("Land" in this case equating to a rather small prop boulder that gradually split into pieces, to suggest Pangaea's evolution into the continents we know and love.) It's really just an excuse to usher out oodles and oodles of animatronic dinosaurs, many of which aren't exactly full-sized adult models, but they were all still big and impressive enough to have made at least a dozen of the kids in our section weep.

From a pair of brachiosaurs to a stegosaurus, all of the key players were on hand. We were seated next to the dinosaur control booth, so I can tell you a bit about how they work: Some dudes use what appeared to be modified bike handlebars to make the dinosaurs shimmy and shake. The dinosaurs all sauntered out with wheeled stands attached, and while that hurt the realism a bit, I'd rather see robot dinosaurs with wheeled stands than no dinos at all.

It was really interesting to see what the crowd reacted strongest to. In an effort to warm my heart, the T-Rex was given the kind of welcome usually reserved for hometown sports heroes, and despite being neither the largest or the most impressive of the animatronics, he was definitely the star of the night. Take that, you lousy raptors.

In fact, the only thing the audience came more alive for was a little sequence where a triceratops took a shit. No, seriously. Walking With Dinosaurs included a patented "triceratops taking a shit" scene, complete with flatuentastic sound effects and a giant ball of prop dung. People went absolutely out of their minds for the prop dung. Trust me, you simply have not lived until you've seen thousands and thousands of people cheer in unison because a robot dinosaur took a fake shit.

I can't wholeheartedly recommend the show as the tickets are so ridiculously expensive, but I dunno...how many chances will you otherwise have to see dinosaurs walking, snarling and shitting?

One caveat, if you're considering going: The souvenir peeps sell a lot of things, but the most popular items are these little light-up dinosaur spinners. Half the kids in the Meadowlands had one, and 90% of them kept the things blinking and twirling throughout the entire show. Three of these spinners were within thirty inches of my head, and I still can't close my eyes without seeing light-up pterradon heads flying in circles.

Oh, and on the way home, all of the lights in my car went out, including my blinkers, as well as my speedometer. I can't really blame the dinosaur show for that, but I think I'm going to anyway.

I'll try to post some videos later, once I figure out how to make them not be 5,000,000 MB in size.

Happy Halloween!

I think that it would be a better movie if you were stoned, not that I am advocating anything like that…

Norm!

(and Peter! yeah…)

Favorite Norm moment, they have to hold hands for some reason and Norm says whoa can’t drink my beer, I need a straw. Then wow I’m having beer through a straw more often.

JLAJRC, I think I went to the same thing as a kid. Several times, in fact. I think they called it “Dinosaurs Alive!”

Matt, I’m wishing, hoping and praying that one of your videos includes the triceratops taking a shit.

Dear God that website is awsome kingklash. Wherever did thoust find it?

Mr. Matt, after very careful consideration, sir, I’ve come to the conclusion that your Halloween countdown system sucks.

I agree that it is a tough system to get a handle on, but you haven’t seen it all play out yet.

I feel a bit more “Halloween-y” myself now. I finally got my Halloween decorations up today (darn ghost with the confetti-filled eyes keeps falling down), and the weather suddenly went from upper-70s to lower-60s and windy in less than 24 hours. Maybe the improved weather will help you get into the spirit, Matt. If it’s 62 near Philadelphia, it’s got to be colder in New York.

yknow, anyone recall if McDonalds still makes the Halloween Certificates? I loved those.

First of all we already throughly explained this a few posts back. There is no tolerance for people whining about the lack of consistent posts. This is free entertainment Matt provides us, so shuddtupaboutit.

Jessica Marie I very vaguely remember it but I don’t remember getting anything to bring home. My Grandma is very cheap so she wouldn’t of bought us merchandise because it’s so overpriced. I remember someone had to push Oscar the Grouch out his can and all when they wanted him to talk. It was like they had a problem and they sang songs and the main sesame street characters had a role. It was obviously people in costumes (you could see their feet poking out of the outfit, their mouths didn’t move etc.) and the human characters were substituted with other people that vaguely looked like the people on the show and they were obviously new people that go on tour. I think some of the human characters were the puppeteers as well but that might of been me thinking they did that on the show (not imagining someone behind the stairs on sesame street, but mr hooper really is the one moving elmo’s mouth)

Thank you for your attempt to refresh my memory Jessica even though it wasn’t a request for help I was just commenting that was the only show I have gone to like the one Matt went to. And we had a field trip once to the play James and the Giant peach (I think that is when the movie came out, so we got to read the book, watch the movie on a vhs tape, and then go watch the play on a field trip, all that makes a kid crave peaches a lot but it was fun and it made me feel like I was doing something kids that were popular did)

We actually had a really cool Sesame street swing/playset growing up. It eventually became rustier and nastier and my Granddad took it apart and piled it in a heap. We had a tiny plastic tire that said Sesame street written where it would say goodyear ya know and it had normal swings, and a big bird plastic yellow like a blow mold type of thing with a seat on the back that you swing with two poles attached forwards and backwards.

And they played on the local station here again this Nickelodeon live show that was here a few weeks ago. Man they sure know how to stretch getting pies in the face and getting slimed out forever and ever. Even though it wasn’t really pies in the face it was white paper plates with whip cream. The two women running the show though had these awesome bowling type of shirts on that said nickelodeon on them. I want one :)

Ahhh, SEASAME STREET LIVE. Some of my best childhood memories in the ol’ Jacksonville Coliseum.

On a more Halloweeny topic, I decorated my classroom today. This is later than I have ever done it before and I thought about not doing it at all but…the cooler weather got to me. :)

Kingklash

Life of Brian ROCKS. Spamalot is cool and all, but I would LOVE to see a live action musical comedy version of life of Brian. Can you imagine how epic the ending would be? All these people hanging on crosses getting crucified and singing “Always look on the bright side of life?” Awesome, I tell you.

Also, Dinosaurs are cool. Robotic Dinosaurs are cooler..

So, anyone here ever have the Sesame Street boxed Halloween costumes from the early 80′s? They were like vinyl apron/smocks and the plastic mask with the rubber band stapled to it.

I was big bird. And also, halloween 83 I was Annie. It was the vinyl red dress with the annie mask.

Ok, this is for you Mandy. I was Cookie Monster in 1980.

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 10/13/2007 1:02 AM

Oh god. I had one of those. I was Ernie. I have pictures of it…doesn’t really look like Ernie. The mask is flat and distorted looking with big hollow eyes, and then there’s this red and blue striped smock thing that’s supposed to be Ernie’s shirt. It looks more like some sort of serial killer in a striped butcher’s apron.

Guilty, I was Oscar one year, and Sylvester the cat another.

HAHA that video was awesome bill!

I hope you get back to updating the front page soon. Sounds like a neat dinosaur show you went to.

Hey, dose any one remember an 80s TV show where this guy thought you how to draw space stuff, and every day he added something new to the big drawing of space stuff that he had going on. For instance he would teach you how to draw space stations space ships aliens and other stuff like that.

Chestnuts roasted by mjgrass @ 10/13/2007 3:43 AM

mandyRetroCrush has a huge gallery of those costumes, though I don’t remember if Big Bird is in there. I only wore that kind of costume once, and I was Jem. I also had a Jem birthday party, but that’s a different story.

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 10/13/2007 9:55 AM

I was gonna go to this stoned but I think I will go to Ozzy/Rob Zombie instead

Chestnuts roasted by sammy @ 10/13/2007 11:29 AM

Oo, Sammy! Can I go too!?
*gets jealous*
I think I was barbie one year.
No, I take that back.
I got the barbie Costume, but it was SO LAME that I refused to wear it come halloween.
I think I would up being a hobo.
My little brother was Robin.
And my sister was Big Bird. I totally remember the big bird one because it had that beak in the front that made the mask catch all your hot breath.. eew.

So, stupid freaking Wal-Mart didn’t have that Poltergeist re-release. But they had something just as good: a box set of three Peanuts holiday specials for 19 bucks. Score!

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 10/13/2007 3:12 PM

mjgrass:

That would be Secret City with Commander Mark. Back in High School, our Art teacher used to tape episodes off her satellite system (back when the dishes were as big as swimming pools) and show them in class. They were part of the lesson plan before too long. Little brother and I were among her top students, mainly because at one time I wanted to be a comic book artist or animator. He just liked being able to draw crazy stuff and not get into trouble for it. If we knew what the future would bring, we both might have stuck with the cartooning, and could have become Flash animators.
