10/01/2007: The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t!

It’s October!  Kind of feels like September flew by.  I don’t know if I’m ready for this.  I often have trouble persuading myself to have fun, but this is the time to do it.  I spent the morning scouring the web for semi-local pumpkin patches and hayride places, and even if I never make it to them, at least I got to see a ton of hijacked Halloween clipart, oftentimes animated with crude lightning bolts.  Is it some sort of prerequisite for any pumpkin patch or hayride place with an Internet connection to make their homepage look like complete shit?  I’m not complaining, though.  It’s part of their charm.  Plus, I get paid a dollar every time I set eyes on the image below, and today, I saw it like 9,000 times:

Now, if only it wasn’t still so damned hot outside.  I haven’t heard wind in the trees around here since 1957.  I don’t get it.  It’s sort of like how I can just never understand Christmas in Australia.  October doesn’t feel right unless I’m getting blown all over while clouds piss on me.  Whatever, October 1st is an important day, as it marks the exact moment that we can openly gush about Halloweeny things without anyone yelling at us because “it’s too early.”  Let us celebrate with this review of The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t, later retitled, The Night That Dracula Saved The World.  Originally airing in 1979 and starring Judd Hirsch as Dracula, it’s a nice, quiet, fun little Halloween special that reminds us to love our mummies and witches just as much as all of the sleeker horror movie characters who stole their place later.

Also, I didn’t touch on this in the article, but I need to get it off my chest.  I have no idea why they renamed it The Night That Dracula Saved The World.  Number one, the world is never in any danger and thus is not in any need of saving.  There is no “world saving” to speak of within this special.  Two, even if you had an argument against what I just wrote, it isn’t Dracula who actually does the saving here, but rather THE WITCH!  SO many things wrong with that title!  Why did they change it?

Hmmm… a Jewish Dracula? Does a Rabbi have to bless the blood so that it’s kosher before he can drink it???

Has anyone seen Rockula?

If they had called it “The Night Judd Hirsch Saved the World” I bet it would be as much of a Halloween staple as the Great Pumpkin.

Judd makes a great Dracula-  TGIO thank god its october

Okay kids, confession time. Back when I was about nine years old or so, when all my classmates were crushing on the teen idol of the day, I had a raging crush on Judd Hirsch. Finally I have the opportunty to get this off my chest. Thanks, Matt.

Saint: Hmmm… a Jewish Dracula? Does a Rabbi have to bless the blood so that it’s kosher before he can drink it???

Since part of the definition of kosher as that it doesn’t contain any blood, I imagine he’d have some trouble with that bit.

More importantly, would a crucifix still drive him back?  Or would you have to lay hands on a Star of David to elicit the hissing and cloak-shielding action?

Oh, and Matt?  That’s the most horrible gif I’ve seen since geocities was cool.  Nice find.

Posted by Jedoc @ 10/01/2007 5:47 PM EDT

I remember this one.  I thought it was just the right amount of cornball for a on-the-cheap holiday special.  If my brain doesn’t betray me, it also has one of my favorite jokes about Frankenstein’s “Creature”:

“My feet hurt!”
“Be quiet, they’re not even yours!”
*sniff* “You didn’t have to remind me!”

Posted by kingklash in: The Hallowe'en that Clogged the Toilet @ 10/01/2007 6:00 PM EDT

So that explains why Judd Hirsch drives a taxi at night!  Does that mean Latka and Jim and Elaine are vampires, too?  I always knew there was something weird about Elaine…

Speaking of vampires, I was a zombie yesterday.  I got better.

Posted by Special K @ 10/01/2007 6:04 PM EDT

Dracula > a witch. That’s why he’s the last boss and witches are mostly random enemies, MAYBE a boss every so often.

Posted by Ben @ 10/01/2007 6:06 PM EDT

You’re damn right about September, Matt, September didn’t last for shit

I usually don’t do anything to celebrate Halloween at all despite my love for it, but this year X-E inspired me to go out and buy a TINY bit, some sort of crazy voodoo witch guy from Target to decorate with, only 3 bucks. So far I’ve found Target has the best Halloween section this year, at least in my neck of the woods anyway. Even though I can’t afford most of the shit I really enjoy seeing it all at least. ONE DAY, I will be able to be the materialistic bitch I really want, and justify buying up the entire stock of spooky goodies and decorate and celebrate proper.

Posted by Ktulu @ 10/01/2007 6:16 PM EDT

I went scouring for Halloween clip art yesterday, too. I found some pretty sweet like 1996 MS Paint pumpkins. Brought me back.
I also saw that image. It’s really pissing my cursor off.

Posted by Cotter @ 10/01/2007 6:19 PM EDT

Wait a minute, is that widescreen? Is this out on DVD? That’d save me a lot of trouble from having to convert it and … you know, buy something to convert it with.

I’m excited that it’s October because that means I’m one month away from November…when I quit my crappy temp job to look for housing in Mississippi.

One behind, but no longer dating as such.  Will make it up when the mood strikes. :)

Posted by Matt @ 10/01/2007 6:57 PM EDT

I thought it was time to come out of hiding and say hi!  So hi!

I am stoked it is finally October and that I have a 3 year old who is obsessed with scary stuff.  Seriously she just wants to find monsters and play with all of the Halloween stuff in every store we go to.  This little lady has no fear and while I am sure this should worry me on some level it actually makes me feel warm and giddy all over.  She is like me and I am liking it.

Plus the month of October starts what can only be described as the best most kick ass 3 out of 12 months of the calendar year thanks to our friend Matt and his most haunted and holy of websites!

Posted by Cricket @ 10/01/2007 7:04 PM EDT

Has anyone realized that daylight savings time was changed this year?  I remember it last winter when it was changed but didn’t realize that it would affect halloween and the general halloween season.  They go forword an hour sometime in the beginning of november now.  That means we won’t get that halloweeny feel that “oh, it’s really getting dark now” in early to mid october.  I don’t know about you guys but this kinda pisses me off.  I can only imagine what the kids who still trick or treat are thinking now that they have an hour less time to go house to house.

Posted by Tenacious Tate @ 10/01/2007 7:11 PM EDT

Why’d they give Dracula top billing instead of the witch? It’s all politics man. Nobody trusts witches. You start putting “witch” in the title of your film, people will start looking down on you, but Dracula, people like Dracula. There’s an irrational prejudice against Witches in this country I tell ya! Where’s the ACLU when you really need them?

Posted by Darth Poop @ 10/01/2007 7:18 PM EDT

Wow, I TOTALLY forgot I have this shit. And I was saving it SPECIFICALLY for Halloween. Thanks a lot Matt, you ruined my cycle. Dammit! Guess I’ll go watch pumpkin head or something… :|

Posted by Cotter @ 10/01/2007 7:19 PM EDT

Darth Poop:  It’s a long story, but it turns out lawyers and witches are natural enemies, while lawyers and vampires admire one another’s fashion sense and lack of pigmentation.  I don’t think the ACLU is going to pick up this one.

Posted by Jedoc @ 10/01/2007 7:23 PM EDT

October is nice and all, but I’m kinda sad that it’s already here, and I’m still not with my fiance. :(

Posted by Annette @ 10/01/2007 7:27 PM EDT

I think the main reason witches don’t get that much respect compared to other monsters is that while the other monsters terrorize countries (or at least a small town), witches only seem to want to make one person, usually a princess, miserable.  Think about all of the Disney Witches, from the one in Snow White all the way to Ursula in Little Mermaid.  Their only goal seems to be making sure the princess doesn’t get any from the handsome prince.  Heck, Tabitha on the soap opera “Passions” also fit into this mold of not wanting some girl to fall for some guy for some reason.  How terrifying is that?  Sure, I’m sure not getting any can get frustrating, but is terrifying? Sorry, but no.

Anyway, I actually went to Michael’s today (along with to a couple of dollar stores) and why is most of the cool Halloween stuff at these places?  Michaels had some cool animatronic things like villages and pirate skeletons, while I saw Boris the Talking skull at a dollar store.  My mom bought a musical strobe light to put in a ceramic pumpkin.

Posted by simon @ 10/01/2007 7:36 PM EDT

Tenacious Tate I was actually thinking about the later date for the time change and how thats gonna suck for the kids, that are already used to starting in the dark, and finishing in the dark. I would be one super pissed off kid if I started trick or treating now at the usual 5pm start time, and its still freaking daylight out!  Hell, we’d get off the bus at 3:30 on Halloween, and it would already be getting dark…lol.

John Schuck…..I think I know who he is, he was the Klingon ambassador in Star Treks IV and VI, and was in the Enterprise two-parter that explained why Klingons from the original Star Trek series didn’t have forehead ridges.

Posted by Dantheman @ 10/01/2007 8:27 PM EDT

Amazing enough, I actually remember this! Who could forget Judd Hirsch dressed as Dracula…and then that sudden disco finale? I can’t seem to remember where I saw this. It was either on cable or someone brought the video in for some Halloween elementary school party.

Yeah, September flew by…but that means I can finally break out my Halloween stuff, and I have a lot for someone who isn’t into the spooky aspects of the season.

Posted by starwenn @ 10/01/2007 8:29 PM EDT

Wait wait wait….which Klingon from Part VI?  That’ the only Trek movie I know pretty well.

I’m pretty sure I have a Raggedy-Ann and -Andy Halloween special on VHS somewhere. It’s called “The Pumpkin Who Couldn’t Smile” and they have to help a sad pumpkin that cries pumpkin seeds.

Also, the DST thing sucks. I’m too old to trick-or-treat (at least not without people getting pissed off), but I hate summer. I love fall and winter, so I’m ready for dark evenings and the holiday season.

The clip art thing is some kind of low rent Halloween site phenomenon. This Friday night I’m going to go to a place here in SC called Wompus Woods. It’s a spook trail type of thing and I was just checking out the site for it, and sure enough it has the obligatory laughing skull that laughs and rears it’s head back and disappears in a cloud of smoke, only to reappear and keep doing the same thing over and over.

Then, you’ve also got the rotating skull head and the line of dripping blood. There’s loads others but I can’t be bothered to think of them right now. I remember taking an HTML class about 6 years ago and we were required to make a site that consisted of 6 pages that all had to link to each other with pictures and links and things. I split mine up into 2 parts, and made half of it about G.I. Joe and the other half about Transformers.

Yeah, I wanna know who that guy was in Star Trek VI. I remember that one pretty well–Christian Slater cameo and all. I remember the New Munsters were part of the lineup of the early days of the Fox network. They came on around the time that Married With Children first premiered. The big lineup back then was those 2 shows, Beans Baxter, Parker Lewis Can’t Loose, and another one that I think was called the Charmlings or something like that. It was about a family that stepped out of some fairy tale and lived in suburban America. The husband was a prince and had a huge stockpile of gold bars in his house. I seem to remember a witch or something that was always after it, but I’m not sure.

By the way, the first time I saw Independence Day, the combination of Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch in a movie together was almost too much Jew for me to handle. That’s a hell of a lot of Jew.

616commando: Is the 616 in your name a reference to the main Marvel 616 universe? If it’s not, then that makes me look like an incredible dork. If it is, well, things aren’t looking to good for either one of us right now.

Oop, sorry about the double post, but there’s something I’ve been curious about for a while. In the banner at the top of the page, in the “ABOUT” circle, is that the punkin mask from Halloween 3? If not, what is it? Also, who’s that in the “BLOG” circle? The others are obvious. Although, I don’t like the way that guy in the “CONTACT” circle is looking at me.

Posted by DJ D @ 10/01/2007 10:01 PM EDT

I can’t recall who the Pumpkinhead dude is.  I just found an image I liked.  The blog guy is actually Remco’s Frankenstein’s Monster figure, from one of my favorite old toy lines.

Posted by Matt @ 10/01/2007 10:03 PM EDT

Sorry I haven’t posted in a long time.  I don’t have internet access at my house right now.  I have an idea for a countdown entry.  Matt previously reviewed an episode of power rangers some years ago.  This year, why doesn’t he cover the Halloween episode from the first season, “Life’s a Masquerade”?  It features a Frankenstein monster and a Halloween party with a costume contest.

Posted by Hoverbored @ 10/01/2007 10:23 PM EDT

I think the Pumpkinhead guy is the guy from the Pete & Pete Halloween episode. He was the leader of a gang of punk teens that liked to smash pumpkins. The leader at least wore a pumpkin that looked the one in the About button on his head.

Posted by Invader Norbert @ 10/01/2007 10:55 PM EDT

InvaderNorbert: I was about to say that I’m worried that you knew that, but then I remembered that my comic book collection exceeds 3,000 books and realized I don’t have much right to make fun of anyone around here for much of anything.

Unless you’re a trekkie. I’m sorry. I love the shows and movies as much as the next guy but if you can honestly speak Klingon you’re just asking for it. I’m just sayin’.

Posted by DJ D @ 10/01/2007 11:17 PM EDT

I went to a wedding once where they spoke in both English and Klingon…I kid you not.  My date leaned over and said “awe that’s sweet they are doing some of it in German” but I didn’t confess to her that I knew it was Klingon, mainly recognizable by the sash and medals the groom wore - they were part of a costume/Trek fan club.  I figured admitting that would totally blow any chance I had with the girl…knowing my luck she probably married a huge Trek fan and had a couple of loDHom’s….

Posted by Shuanfu @ 10/01/2007 11:33 PM EDT

I’m pretty sure I had no idea that Judd Hirsch did anything between Taxi and Independence Day.

Posted by squee4242 @ 10/01/2007 11:36 PM EDT

This awesome article, got me thinking about another obscure Halloween tv-movie. I had to look it up on IMDB because all I could remember was the girl from Who’s The Boss was in it. It was called The Canterville Ghost, and the only image that has stuck in my head all these years, is someone pulling a cover off from like a turkey platter, and the ghost’s head is there. It really freaked me out!  Does anyone else remember this movie???

Posted by crazy_mainer @ 10/01/2007 11:45 PM EDT

I think they changed the title to that thing about Dracula saving the world, because the other, original title made it sound like just a holiday movie and therefore less marketable. How many people over age 4 watch Halloween specials outside of September-October? You can’t even pull a Christmas in July thing with those.
Then, just saying “The Night that Almost Wasn’t” sounds like some bad 80s romantic comedy, so they needed to think of a spooky-ish title to attract the kids that would draw them in year round. Dracula saving the world sounds nice and exciting, and would catch the eyes of, presumably, the right sorts all year.

Posted by Talia @ 10/01/2007 11:45 PM EDT

Shuanfu: Yeah, I can relate. I used to work with a girl that I thought was totally hot, but didn’t have the nerve to do much about it aside from nervously chat with her during break time saying things that I instantly regretted the second they came out of my mouth. The day before my last day there (cause I was moving out of town), she came in with a Batman shirt. (Keep in mind I’m a Batman fanatic). Of course, I complimented her on it and her response was, “Oh yeah, I LOVE comic books. I read them all the time!.”

The first time I ever saw Judd Hirsch in anything was Dear John, and then caught him in the reruns of taxi and was like, hey that’s the guy from Dear John!…and look, there’s Tony from Who’s the Boss!, and there’s Doc Brown!…and Burt Reynolds’s wife from Evening Shade!….and of course Danny Devito..from a whole bunch of stuff!

DJ D, So…I’m right?

No, I’m not a Trekkie, don’t worry. I’ve always been a Star Wars kinda guy.

Speaking of girls of that like, my girlfriend doesn’t think I’m a geek because I don’t know how to play chess, despite all the other geekish stuff that you have all seen me express, even in this and the last post I made.

Do you agree? Discuss.

You got that right.

Posted by Micheal Myers @ 10/02/2007 12:35 AM EDT

Invader Norbert: I’m just going to take your word on it for the pumpkin thing.

As for your girl, hate to say it, but she’s wrong. I’ve known a lot of geeks who don’t play a lick of chess, but are “real” geeks. I know how to play chess (poorly), but I wouldn’t say I’m a geek at all…well, maybe a little. I’ve got geekish tendencies. My definition of geek is somebody who is so engrossed in whatever geekish endevors they have that it completely prohibits them from attracting anyone in the romantic/physical sense. I’m going to have to be careful in my wording here because I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging at all but, I’ve..ahem..done fairly well in that regard (could just be luck), so I don’t really put myself in the category of typical geek. I think it really depends on who you are as a well rounded person. If you’ve got some stuff going for you and you just happen to play World of Warcraft or read comics or are a gamer or something, then no, you’re not a huge geek. Honestly, I don’t really see how playing or not playing chess really fits into it one way or the other.

As for labels in general, I don’t care for them, but if I had to slap one on myself, well, I’ve been the dj of a goth themed radio show for over 10 years, I had a regular monthly goth gig at a club for 2 years and have dj’d all around the southeast and a goth/industrial dj/club promoter. I wear a lot of black, read horror, and am obsessed with Christina Ricci. I like to think I’m a pretty well rounded person and have a lot of diverse interests and musical tastes, but if someone calls me a goth I don’t get bent out of shape about it. Like I said, I hate labels and all, but if the shoe fits….

Goths are always dressed for Halloween.

Posted by fellow goth @ 10/02/2007 12:46 AM EDT

Ok, so this is off topic, but still halloween themed…sort of. There’s this amazing toy store in Marlton, NJ called the house of fun, that sells pretty much any toy you ever played with growing up. They have EVERYTHING, a ton of it brand new. The point, you ask? I was there on saturday and found a bunch of unopened Child’s Play 2 figures from Japan. And to make the situation even more awesome, I noticed a slew of Gremlins toys (both new and used) that I failed to notice last time I was there.

Matt, you should totally stop by this place next time you’re on your way to wildwood or A.C.. It’s right off 30 near the AC expressway. I guarantee you’d love it.

fellow goth: I’m really jazzed right now about all the Halloween decorations not just because I’m all in the season along with everyone else, but because I’m moving this weekend to a new place and now I can easily decorate it. This is the only time of year I can find the kind of stuff I would keep sitting around all year round anyway. I don’t like to think it’s a goth thing so much as it’s just a personal taste thing. If people wanna call that goth, go ahead. I just call it me.

Oh, by the way, look we’re talking about Halloween again, and goth stuff…vampires are goth…Judd Hirsch was a vampire in a fun TV special…See how we came back full circle and still managed to stay on topic the whole time? Happy now, Anonymous?

Sorry “anonymous,” but I agree with “a different anonymous.”  We can (and always will) go off-track.  The only thing that’s a no-no is to go off-track in such a way that only the 2-3 people involved with the original convo could participate.

Ken: That store sounds like it’d be worth a trip.  Haven’t seen those figures, but I’ve seen what Japan has done for Gremlins and Gremlins 2 in the toy department, so I suspect they’re top notch.

I had way too many orange and black M&Ms tonight.

Posted by Tommy @ 10/02/2007 1:13 AM EDT

Man, how come all these cool toy stores and things are in NJ? From reading this site and reading all the cool places that Matt’s been that he’s reviewed or written about, plus all the stuff everyone talks about in the posts, I’m starting to think Summer and Fall in NJ is just the place to be. The closest I’ve ever come is flying in and out of Newark about 8 years ago. Of course all I saw of it was the inside of the airport and the view out the window from the plane. I wish I could have had time to at least go outside of the airport and check out some of the sites.

Kind of an aside, but the my current job (which I’m quitting on Thursday–woo hoo!) requires me to talk on the phone to people from all over the country and what I’ve found is that people really don’t always live up to stereotpes of what they’re supposed to be. I’ve found that most everone I’ve talked to from NY and NJ to be really nice and funny and cool to talk to. I haven’t found that the whole misconception that they’re all rude and jerks is true at all. My new roommate’s from NY and she’s groovy. I was born and raised here in SC and I would rather hang out with someone like her than most of the good ol’ boys around here. Sorry if this strays too far from topic, just something I wanted to get off my chest. Off the soapbox now. Carry on…

Tommy, don’t buy the fun-sized bag of Twix this year.  Three Twix flavors in one bag.

Posted by Matt @ 10/02/2007 1:16 AM EDT

Three Twixes? All I know of is the standard and peanut butter (which is way underrated). What else is there? I’m not sure I would trust anything other than those 2. Hope it’s not strawberry or something. Oh, and my mom got me a bag of all-dark chocolate Hershey’s miniatures. I really appreciated it cause everyone loves dark chocolate, but when your crispy, mr. goodbars, and standard hershey’s are ALL dark chocolate it kind ruins the alure of the mysterious dark one. It’s a little bit of an overload and kind of clashes with the other ingredients.

Posted by DJ D @ 10/02/2007 1:26 AM EDT

DJD, I’m from Philly, and I’ve always been dissapointed in the lack of awesome toy stores and stores that rank high on the nostalgia scale. There used to be a place called Quakerhead collectibles that had all kinds of old and imported toys, but they went bankrupt, so I’ve had to find nearby solutions…all of which are in Jersey. I think it has something to do with being surrounded by major cities and the Jersey shore which will always (despite recent gentrification) have this really powerful “yesteryear” effect. I think the combination of these things (along with similar nuclear contamination that resulted in Godzilla) results in the Jersey we know and love.

Posted by Ken @ 10/02/2007 1:37 AM EDT

I’m a serious chocoholic.  I had to spring for two king sized Reese Pumpkins for me and m’lady the other day. For some reason I always like the holiday Reese stuff a ton better than the regular cups.

Posted by Tommy @ 10/02/2007 1:43 AM EDT

Ken: Yeah, that’s what I’ve gathered so far from reading Matt’s articles and the posts around here. Apparently, the Jersey shore is just really awesome. The closest thing around here that could compare to that is Myrtle Beach, which my family goes to every summer since I was 5. But, it’s changed a lot and is a lot more expensive now. They tore down the Pavilion about a year ago, which was a major Myrtle Beach attraction and really shot themselves in the foot with that one. It was basically a mini-amusement park with loads of roller coasters and things and was one of the main reasons why people go down there in the first place.

Tommy: Reeses miniatures and Dr. Pepper are my two biggest addictions in this world. Stick me on a deserted island with just that to eat and drink and I’ll die a happy, toothless, diabetic man. Personally, my favorites are the miniature cups, but I do see the alure of all the different incarnations, especially the Halloween Pumpkins and the Easter eggs. It’s like you’re getting waaaay too much Reeses at once. I almost feel guilty for eating that big ass pumpkin all in one sitting, but then I remember that I usually don’t think twice about opening up a bag of the cups and putting away 10 of them in one go and suddenly it’s not so bad.

Posted by DJ D @ 10/02/2007 2:09 AM EDT

DJ D, Yeah, Wildwood is summer around here. In the Philadelphia region, everyone “goes down the shore.” I love Wildwood, and to sweeten the deal this year, some genius opened an honest to god toy store on the boardwalk (Matt are you aware of this?) with some awesome stock and decent prices (for the boardwalk). Cape May’s a really nice area, too, but there’s not a lot to do, and it’s FULL of Canadian’s during the summer.

I’ve actually been to Myrtle Beach, and I remember really liking it. I specifically remember an amazing mini golf place that had an outdoor range that was dino-themed, and an indoor ocean-themed course.

Matt: In Star Trek VI, he’s the Klingon ambassador who speaks to the Federation president in his office after Chancellor Gorkon’s assassination.

Posted by Dantheman @ 10/02/2007 2:28 AM EDT

Ken: Yeah, exactly! I know exactly which course you’re talking about. There’s another one that my cousin and I go to every year that has a giant skull with smoke that comes out of eyes. You enter the back of it and you have to play through the and come out the mouth. Golf is a huge thing down here. The other thing that is just the embodiment of Myrtle Beach is “The Shag.” That’s the official state dance and is just about as Myrtle Beach as you can get. Actually there was a movie called Shag that was shot down there. It’s kind of like the Electric Slide I guess and is mostly done by dorky middle aged white couples, cause I think it’s a couples thing, but it’s all choreographed like the Electric Slide and people do it in big groups. I have no idea how to do either one of them, but people at the beach are all into shagging. I did a student exchange in England (which is why I was flying in and out of NJ-I was going to London), and after I got back here I found a flyer for “Shag Lessons”. Of course my new British friends had never heard of the dance, so I had to mail them the flyer. I thought they would get a kick out of it.

I’ve been answering phones for…hmm, going on about seven years, and I have to say that in my experience there is a certain breed of NY/NJ folks that are…complicated to deal with. My theory is that being ahead of everyone else time zone wise has given them a complex. They are in the TINIEST minority, however, whereas a huge majority of the funniest and most interesting people I’ve talked to have been from the same geographical area. Oh, and I consider myself a geek but have no aptitude for chess.
There was a funny allusion to Taxi on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia this week (Devito plays a main character). It would be amazing if they worked some Taxi cameos sometime.

Excellent article Matt! I love your reviews of Halloween specials - that one about The Worst Witch with Mr. Curry himself is my favourite article ever! I read it at work (it was a slow day though, so I have my excuses…) and couldn’t stop laughing for like an hour. People kept looking at me funny. :(

I am interested in this fabled Power Rangers Halloween special. It sounds like prime Matt material to me. ;)

Posted by Frakkyfire @ 10/02/2007 2:54 AM EDT

DJ D, yeah, I was like 8 when I visited Myrtle Beach, and as a non-golfer, the beach and awesome mini-golf were my primary sources of entertainment. “people at the beach are all into shagging,” is hilarious when taken out of context.

squee4242, I think the bad rap the tri-state gets is due to in part to certain members of Philly’s city folk…they’re a special breed, and this is not by any means “the city of brotherly love.” Also, I’m new to that show as of this season, but so far, so good.

Posted by Ken @ 10/02/2007 2:56 AM EDT

Ken: Yeah, shagging at Myrtle Beach is mostly a couples thing, but it’s all choreographed and is better when there’s good music playing and it’s done in big groups. How’s that for a soundbite? Hello! Yeeeaah, baby!

squee4242: I’ve had a few jobs over the years that have required me to deal with the public over the phone and I know what you mean about that certain tiny percentage of the population. On the flip side, there’s a certain type of southerner on the phone that just makes me want to reach through the phone and strangle them. They never have their shit together, usually have kids screaming in the background, and want you to sit on the phone and hold their hand why they figure out why the hell they called you in the first place. Just the living embodiment of the literally slow, dumb southerner. I just want to scream at these people, “Alright, step it up a notch, think and get your shit together and call back. I don’t have all day to wait for your inbred brain to catch up to the rest of us here.” Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I’m a southerner by birth so I guess I’m allowed to talk that way about “my people.”

Alright kids, I’m sleepy-deepy right now so I’m off to bed. I’ve got to be up in 6 hours. See you all tomorrow.

Posted by DJ D @ 10/02/2007 3:21 AM EDT

i’ve had several jobs answering phones in the past and tho i don’t remember breakdowns by geography i do remember the two rudest groups of people i’ve encountered (and hopefully i won’t offend anyone here) would be hockey fans and pharmacists!

one job was working for a catalog company that sold sports memorabilia. the average football/baseball/basketball fans would all pretty much blend together, but the hockey fans dear jeezus..

i wish i could say the leaves were changing color and the air was crisp, but in texas it still feels like the middle of july! i hope it starts to cool off at least a little, it was in the upper 90s today

DJ D How you felt when you watched Taxi is how I felt when I watched the musical Tommy (the movie version) for the first time a few months ago.

I thought, OMG Tina Turner! OMG Elton John! OMG Jack Nicholson!  OMG FREAKIN ERIC CLAPTON! All in one movie and then some!

Talk about being a geek I made a character myspace account for the adult Tommy.  http://www.myspace.com/adulttommy to be precise.  One of these days I want to make another one for when he was a little kid.  I was just surprised there wasn’t one before!  If anyone wants to be his friend go right ahead he only has me for a friend.  He’s not only deaf dumb and blind he doesn’t have any myspace friends either!  Augh! lol I crack myself up.

I honestly don’t remember the last time we had a fall-like Halloween in Louisiana. Every year when I’m at my parents house handing out candy to the kids I’m always sweating tons. It’s usually around 85 with, if you’re lucky, a low in the 70’s.

We’ve had cool Halloweens, they’re just massively outweighted by the staggeringly hot (for October, anyway) ones.

That said, the leaves are falling, there are pecans on the ground everywhere, I’m seeing pumpkins on storefronts, and the vague scent of decomposing leaves is starting to show up (maybe my favorite smell in the world, next to a Christmas Tree) and I’m getting in the Halloween mood. Actually, just ordered a couple of movies (Prom Night and The Funhouse) because I felt like it due to it being Oct. 1. I love horror. Even bad horror.

Posted by Wukong @ 10/02/2007 6:17 AM EDT

I have noticed Wal-Mart and Target are pushing all the halloween candy.  I have not yet picked the assortment I want. Last year I simply handed out handfuls of WARHEADS from this giant tub i got from  COSTCO. I can’t decide what to give out this year. I have never given out a TRICK. But I have been tempted. As a child Halloween was unreal.  It was total freedom. I’d throw on a black t-shirt and just go around collecting candy in an old pillowcase.  Of course we’d have that one house of old people who’d give out PENNIES. WTF is that? That was always the house that got Toilet Papered later that night. We’d squirt Shaving cream at each other.  Don’t forget to put a pin inside the nosle and then melt the opening so it shoots a nice fine jet of  shaving cream lol. OH and finally, my first costume ever?  YODA when I was 5 yrs old. The force was with me.

Not to brag, but it’s PERFECT Halloween weather here in Nebraska.  It’s been cloudy/gloomy for a while now, it’s crisp and cool outside, with a slight breeze, the leaves are starting to turn color…  Today it’s raining, which somehow just adds to the ambience.  If anyone needs to get into the spirit, come spend a day here!  :)
Matt, not sure if you’re interested in this or not, but there are models online to make the Disney Haunted Mansions out of paper, all you have to do is print, cut, and assemble.  If you (or anyone else for that matter) are interested, hop over to http://haunteddimensions.raykeim.com and check it out.  If you’re curious, click my name to see the one I’m building, I’ve been taking photos the whole way through.  Oh yeah, and sorry, I kinda stole your “foul talking action figures” idea, but it’s so much fun, hope you don’t mind… :)

Posted by Dr Sketch @ 10/02/2007 9:22 AM EDT

Even though its spring here, I’m getting a nice collection of falling leaves as well(although I think thats due to the trees dying…). I’ve always been jealous watching US tv shows of all the leaf piles people jumped into during autumn…so if any of you actually do that…uh, can you jump in one for me?

Posted by Jasmine @ 10/02/2007 9:25 AM EDT

So am I the only one who associates autumn with board games?  It probably has something to do with the terrible selection of television channels I grew up with, but once it starts getting too cool to comfortably play outside in short sleeves, my dice hand starts getting itchy.

I wonder how successful I would be at luring strangers at coffee shops into pickup games of Solarquest and Risk 2210.

Posted by Jedoc @ 10/02/2007 9:28 AM EDT

Paper Pusher: Wow, how uncanny! My first Halloween costume was Yoda too! Yeah, also at the age of 5. I remember wearing it to Kindergarten. It had the big plastic wrap around thing that never fit right and the mask you just about suffocated in. Has anyone else noticed that Halloween costumes are made so much better these days? They sure do put a lot more work into them that those shitty oversized one we had back in the day. I have to take issue with one thing though. Warheads? I so would have tp’d your house.

Jedoc: Risk is the shit. Some of my fondest memories of high school were summers when my 3 best friends would get together for massive Risk tournaments that would last for hours. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that you pretty much have to settle down and make a night of it. I remember when I first started playing I thought Europe would be a good place to hunker down. It’s small, easy to conquer up front. Oh, but no. Go ahead. Try to hang on to Europe. That would be folly, my friend. Folly. I discovered it’s all about Australia, Africa, and to some extent the Americas. THAT’s where you want to have your stronghold. I’ve never played any version other than the classic Risk, but a 2210 sounds interesting. There’s also a Lord of the Rings one which would be totally wild. The thing about those is that if the map is different you don’t have the experience at first of knowing which places are the best to settle down. I mean, you can kind of tell just from looking at it, but it would be weird getting used to a different board at first.

Wow, I really need to edit that article.  Apparently I still was feeling the effects of being sick.  It reads like it’s been translated from another language.

I love October.  I’m at work now but I have a neat article planned for tonight.

Posted by Matt @ 10/02/2007 10:41 AM EDT

DJ D:  No way, man.  I was all about the Fortress Europe strategy.  Only four border countries to fortify, coupled with the ability to easily attack North America or Africa in order to deny your opponents their troop bonuses.  Australia can be good as a colony, but you’ve got nowhere to go from there but Asia, which is suicidal at best.

If you’re into Risk, I can recommend 2210 with no reservations.  It’s a solid upgrade, and honestly my friends and I don’t play classic Risk at all anymore unless we’re introducing somebody to the game.  The Star Wars and LoTR versions can be good for shaking things up and avoiding monotony, but the game balance and rules just don’t seem as polished.

Posted by Jedoc @ 10/02/2007 10:44 AM EDT

I found an awesome Risk game from 1963 at a “friends of the library” sale. I haven’t even played it yet, but I love looking at it.

Anyway, DJ D, my fiance had a job where he was on the phone a lot too, and he also said that people from that general area were pretty friendly.  I live in Oklahoma, and even though they say people from this part of the country are friendly, I don’t think that’s true anymore.  I hardly ever come across “friendly” people!

Matt, BLESS YOU for doing a review on this special. I taped it when it first aired, and like an ass taped over it only a few years back to make room for something dumb (I don’t even remember what it was for). Thank goodness for You Tube. I wish they’d put this out on DVD. My sister and I think this is the hokiest Halloween special we’ve ever seen, she loves the mummy falling down, we quote it all the time, and the best part is, when Mariette Hartley came up to my job a few years back, she recited the whole “I’ll show YOU tap dancing” bit right in front of me!!!
The disco dancing sequence at the end is still my favorite ;)I love that friggin’ song..

I have been having trouble posting on here lately.  I am starting to get a complex like I have been blocked or something but have not had time enough to whine about until this very moment!

I so love October because it is the beginning of what can only be referred to as the start of the most kick ass 3 months of the entire calendar year!  My little girl loves scary stuff so we seem to be spending lots of time looking for scary monsters and fun halloween stuff for her to play with.  I am sure that this should disturb me on some deep level given that she is not quite 4 years old yet but instead it makes me proud because she is so much like me in this regard. :-)

As for my favorite hokey Halloween movie I think it has to be Hocus Pocus.  Yep.  That is all I have to say about that.

What I want to know is how Matt could skip out on all the Halloween town movies.  Seriously campy and hard to watch stuff there and it seems like there’s more of them than the Olson twins movies.

Cricket: Thank you for allaying my fears!  I had a really funny thought yesterday and tried three times to post it along with a link to a picture, but I thought I’d been blocked, so I’ve been depressed all day until I was able to post just a couple of hours ago. lol  Is it sad that that ruined my day?

And I *completely* agree with your comments about October!  And bravo to you for being a good parent who encourages a love of the strange and macabre!  My parents tried to repress those qualities in my 4-year-old self and it just made me weirder. haha

And I love Hocus Pocus, but for some reason I don’t own it.  That’s what I asked The Great Pumpkin for for Halloween. :D

“what’s a halloween town movie?”

Halloween Town is this series of made-for-tv movies that aired on the Disney Channel. They starred Debbie Reynolds and were about a young girl who found out she was actually a witch, and that as such she had access to a magical land of monsters called Halloween Town.

That description, as bad as it was, was about 30% more entertaining than any of the movies.

Posted by Shuanfu @ 10/02/2007 10:16 PM EDT

I actually liked Cavemen. I thought it was pretty subtley funny. Sure the plot was nothing spectacular, but it’s pretty original and opens up a lot of new possibilities for awkward, situational comedy.

Look at it this way, sure they’re an ad gimmick that somehow got a show. You know who else started the same way? Ernest P. Fucking Worrell…went from small-town advertising gimmick to superstar. I doubt the Cavemen will ever reach that kind of cult status, but I’m willing to give them a shot.

I’m sure I’m gonna love the cavemen show.  I’ll be happy if it’s actually good, but I think I’d love a terrible cavemen show all the same.  Not sure what they could possibly do to make me not like a cavemen show.  It’d have to be horrible in a way I’m as of yet totally unfamiliar with.

Matt, do you sleep in October or December? Don’t kill yourself, man.

Posted by Bill @ 10/02/2007 11:12 PM EDT

Wow, I finally got on here again today. My last post was made this morning before I left for work, and here it is after 1:00am and I’m just about to go to bed and this is my first chance to sit down in front of the computer all day…ok, now to respond quickly to a whole day of posting before I go off to a much needed visit to sleepytown…

Jedoc: See, that’s exactly what I thought at first too, and I could never pull it off. I would spend too much time fortifying and not attacking so that by the time I was ready to spread out everyone else had fortified their borders pretty well and would gang up on me, OR, I would try to get too ambitious too soon, and spread out too thin and conquer nothing. I just couldn’t hack hanging onto Europe. I did really well with the Americas though. My favorite times in the game are in the beginning when it’s all building fairly quickly and you can kind of see where people are settling down and where the lines are being drawn, and then later about three-fourths of the way through when everyone’s at the peak of their strength and the shit starts to really go down.

Ann: I fully intend to see more of Jersey one day when time and money permits. I only wish I could have seen more of it at the time other than the inside of an airport and the view from out of the window of the plane. No offense or anything, but that was the craziest airport experience I’ve ever had. After I arrived back from London, everyone was told to literally throw our baggage into a pile and it would all be returned to us later cause our next flights were coming. No security check, no scanning, no nothing. Just throw your bags in this pile here and run (this was all pre-9/11 by the way). I hauled it across the airport cause of course my gate was all the way at the other end, and got there with about a minute to spare for my next flight from NJ to Charlotte. My bag never showed up to Charlotte when I got there, and instead showed up on my doorstep about a week later in SC.

FeedMyFrankenstein: I LOVE The Midnight Hour. I used to have a ritual of watching that every year around Halloween. I even like the random, completely unnecessary musical number that comes out of nowhere in the middle of the movie. And yeah, the part where the zombies show up along with a random werewolf used to scare the pants off of me. I never did understand why all the undead looked like the undead except for the one hot, blonde ’50’s girl. How did she get a pass? I mean, surely some of those other guys had unfinished buisiness too. Great movie, though.

Wenthral: The Halloweentown movies are some great fun. I would think those would be totally up Matt’s alley and a perfect addition to the site. Good suggestion, that…I actually spent an entire Saturday last fall watching all 4 of them in one go. How come “Darcy’s Wild Life” had to star in the last one? I guess they wanted to go with a bigger star. But did you notice the budget kind of got bigger as they went along? The skeleton cab driver guy looked a lot better in the 4th one than he did in the first one.

diamonds: At the radio station where I have my show I used to work with a guy who did a J-Pop show. He went by J-Poppa on the air, and he was obsessed with Japan. I truly feel was just a reincarnated Japanese guy stuck in a white guy’s body. He was way into anime and manga, listened to nothing but J-Pop, spoke Japanese, and had a Japanese girlfriend. Last I heard, he moved there. Good for him. He should be right at home now.

Ok, that’s it. I’m off to bed. I might check in in the morning before work…Just 2 more days left at that job! Woo-doo! Too bad I won’t be around to catch the premiere of today’s new article if it’s posted in the next hour so. Guess I’ll catch it tomorrow. Later, folks.

So in australia, sweet nothing is done here for halloween, maybe a few kids in a bed sheet or a fairy outfit but thats it.

ANd I like a hot Christmas, nothing like a nice christmas dinner then a few beers and in the afternoon a swim in the pool

Would like some of those halloween reese’s though, love my reese’s pieces

How come nobody’s mentioned the Halloween Tree movie yet? That’s one of the best specials out there, and certainly needs more air-time.

I’ve got nothing to say but it’s okay

Good morning, good morning

It’s great to stay up late.

Kinda random post here, but I thought I’d bring something to the attention of “Halloween” movie completists out there: If you don’t own a copy of “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers” (part 6) on DVD and don’t feel like dropping at least $40 for a new copy on amazon or eBay, right now most Blockbusters are carrying it for $8.99. (Must be overstock or something since I’m pretty sure this one’s out of print.) Just go to their handy “$8.99 New DVDs” section at the front of the store; they’re all arranged alphabetically. Commander out.

Thanks Manimal, that’ll be in my head all day :)
I would love it if the Caveman show was any good, but everything I’ve heard and seen has indicated otherwise. I didn’t even realize it was on last night. I want details too!

“October 1st is an important day, as it marks the exact moment that we can openly gush about Halloweeny things without anyone yelling at us because ‘it’s too early.’”

Screw the nay-sayers. For god’s sake, some stores already have Christmas decorations out alongside the Halloween stuff. FREAKIN CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS. That, my friends, is exemplary of the statement “it’s too early.”

The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t is part of the great canon of Disney Channel Halloween specials, from back when it was a premium channel. Other, similarly pricey specials included:

Mr. Boogedy
Witch’s Night Out
Halloween Is Grinch Night
Casper’s Halloween Special
Raggedy Ann & Andy In: The Pumpkin Who Couldn’t Smile
and, of course, Disney’s Halloween Treat.

The line that has forever haunted me from The Halloween That Almost Wasn’t: “Illusion?! Then who did that, a termite?”

Posted by G'Tron @ 10/03/2007 5:26 PM EDT

G’Tron: I’ve been trying to remember this movie that I watched in elementary school for years, and I think it might be Mr. Boogedy. Please tell me it so this thing that’s been bugging me for nigh on 20 years now can finally be settled. It was about a family or some kids who I think moved in to a house and heard stories about it being haunted by somebody. I seem to remember that he was dressed up in a devil costume or something red. It’s all really foggy though. Does any of this sound like Mr  Boogedy at all? I guess I could just Google it or something but asking you is a lot more interesting.

Man, I hope Martha Stewart shits herself in jealousy.

After over a day of knowing it needed it, I’ve finally gone back through this article to clean up some of the editorial messes.  So, if you feel like reading it again for approximately three changed words, by all means…

The mood table concept is, by the way, one of the best holiday-decorating ideas ever, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it starts to catch on.

Posted by Monte @ 10/04/2007 7:20 PM EDT

so i turned on the local news for once (cleveland, OH area) and definitely they just said that one of the local communities is “CANCELLING HALLOWEEN”  WHAT THE FUCK……i am now certain that Dracula (or the witch for that matter) did not save halloween.

Posted by Leigha @ 10/04/2007 10:26 PM EDT

ok, so they just ran the story, apparently its not cleveland, its somewhere in colorado.  they dont want kids dressing up at school because they deem halloween costumes as “violent” and say that they dont want kids left out who come from poor families who cant afford costumes…..whatever happened to the good old standbys like a ghost….everyone has sheets…..  they said that the community is going to have a fall celebration or something…..LAME

Posted by Leigha @ 10/04/2007 11:00 PM EDT

Is anyone else getting overly annoyed with today’s PC culture?  I read the article out of Colorado where they are having a fall party on October 5th, but Halloween is forbotten.  I also saw another article out of Chicago where one of the local schools were considering cancelling Halloween and Christmas, but instead decided to add a Ramadan festival inbetween the two.

It’s sad really, I’m sure most of us get a nostalgic feeling when we look through a lot of Matt’s awesome articles and I think a lot of kids are missing that these days.  Sure, they’ll have their own memories but it may be of the year Christmas was canned in school or how they weren’t allowed to play tag or dodgeball.  Most of us grew up looking forward to the yearly Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas specials that would be promenently featured on any given broadcast channel.  Damn shame that some of that is going away.  Hell, with the news Kids WB! is closing shop in favor of a 4Kids block at the end of this season, one could even wonder how much longer kids will be able to wake up on a Saturday morning and enjoy some good old (non-imported) toons.

Posted by jjwspider @ 10/04/2007 11:58 PM EDT

Instead of getting rid of Halloween, there should be a money drive of some sort to help get kids costumes that cant afford them, and EVERY HOLIDAY known to human kind should be celebrated so no one is left out. Um, unless of course, their religion doesnt allow for any holidays??? Hmmmmm that would be tough to get around…

Posted by crazy_mainer @ 10/05/2007 12:29 AM EDT

i guess my family did the right thing in not raising me with religion so i got to do all of the fun things i wanted to as a kid…..like worship satan….

Posted by Leigha @ 10/05/2007 11:47 AM EDT

DJ D: I’m pretty sure you are thinking of Mr. Boogedy. There was a guy in a devil costume, although it wasn’t Mr. Boogedy himself, but The DEVIL, selling him his magic invisibility cloak. Mr. Boogedy was an evil pilgrim ghost with a face that was “all yucky like a grilled cheese sandwich.”

Posted by G\\\'Tron @ 10/06/2007 3:42 AM EDT

Holy friggin’ crap!  Man, I was wondering if you’d ever feature this thing on here.  I’m 21 years old and I remember watching this thing on the Disney Channel around 1990-ish.  I had it on tape for a few years, then it got lost in the shuffle.  Sometime last year, it just popped up in my head, and thank god, youtube actually has it.

Posted by David R @ 10/09/2007 12:18 AM EDT

Hey Matt! Did Judd Hirsch get you or what?

Posted by Trace @ 10/09/2007 9:51 AM EDT

DocDragon: I’m SOO with you on the Halloween Tree. In fact, I’m going to have to go find it online and order a copy now that you reminded me of it. Does anybody out there remember the Olsen twins’ Double Double Toil and Trouble movie? Cloris Leachman is the best crazy old lady witch EVER.

Posted by Crystal @ 10/09/2007 7:45 PM EDT

seriously…is anyone else starting to get worried about matt?  hopefully he didn’t get eaten by a pack of rabid werewolves…

Posted by Jay Firestorm @ 10/15/2007 3:53 PM EDT

Yeah, I’m starting to get worried. I’ve been reading the site for… four years, and I’ve never posted before. Is everything cool with the big guy?

I miss matt :( for the past 2 weeks I’ve been checking the site and saying “Ah damn it!”
I hope he’s okay.
He should be back in no time, with a valid reason for his not being around-ness, right?

Right?

Posted by TheMerchant @ 10/23/2007 7:51 PM EDT

same thing here.  i check my email like 6 times a day, and each time i do that i check this site too to see if anything new is posted.

Posted by Leigha @ 10/24/2007 11:18 AM EDT

Maybe we should call GhostBusters?

I am telling you, Judd got him!

Posted by Trace @ 10/25/2007 9:26 AM EDT

But… he’s dracula, and dracula saves stuff, or so they think. so Trace, I think your right.
Judd, please, by all means we’d like to have Matt back soon.
Thanks.

I believe it was “hooks a left” on 2-1 and Lewis, but the Warren G reference is no less appreciated.

perhaps THIS is the Halloween that almost wasn’t…..
