09/29/2007: SNT.
To highlight just how without direction this particular SNT should be, I shall post gibberish: akkaksakskaka.

But at least we got an official SNT, and that’s all that matters

Yeah, I’m sick as a dog, but Jason on Arsenio didn’t seem conducive enough for our usual weekend fun.

It would be great if no real topic ever formed and we floated through random conversations all night….

To add to Brandon’s thought: I’ve had dinner but I sure am thirsty. Is there anything good on TV tonight? I just got a bunch of new channels but I can’t find anything to watch….
Maybe we should do a movie night again? Or keep it pointless??

skdhwoahdhe!
I’m sick too, but I’m trying to fight it off. I hate Airborne soooo much.
So how’s everybody doing?
I’m worried about you too then squee :)…everyone around where I live seems to have some sort of funk or something; it’s strange. But wasn’t our fearless leader very sick just a little while ago? I hate when people are sick ’cause I know how miserable you feel.
If it’s any consolation I feel ’sick’ about how Alabama has played tonight; does that count?

I’m disappointed with the lack of seasonal ghost/haunting shows on tv. I live a block away from Eastern State Penitentiary, which does a big haunted house, you can catch it in the Travel Channels on demand show about haunted houses. It was one of the few themed things I could find.. I hate being in the mood from seeing it, yet not having any good ghost stories to watch. Anyone here have any ghost experiences to share?

My Thing hands feel out of my closet at school during a test last week, so I feel your pain.
The cable guy -who turned out to be a guy I went to high school with; that’s moving back home for ya- came and hooked up digital cable+DVR today, and he went ahead and turned on the HD channels as well. I told him it would be a waste ’cause I didn’t have an HD TV, but he said that I would notice the difference. And damn if he wasn’t right. I watched the football game in my redneck ’sotra’ HD but you could totally tell that the HD channel was much better than the regular cable feed, even on my 7 year old set. Sure it was formatted wrong but I got used to it. I recorded Heroes and Chuck in HD too, and they look equally as sharp…funny how that all worked out….

I am so sad!! The hub and I just got back from Walmart where I walked the isles of Halloween candy searching for ghost dots…none to be found in our store :-( I did find the bag of Party Favors with the pink and peach turtles…I laughed and tried to explain it to my hubby, but he just didn’t get it.

I wish I could go hunting for Halloween lollies…we don’t celebrate it here at all, except the occassional party store sells a few things the fortnight beforehand. Like banners and fake bats. That’s a good point, Matt. I agree.
As far as the SNL season premiere goes, how many skits will feature LeBron James as himself? If it’s all, I don’t want to watch. For a basketball tie-in, I’m hoping LeBron James dresses up as Kazaam, but that’s a weird hope to begin with.

Posted by
Dr. Acula @ 09/29/2007 10:37 PM EDT
Jeffininer: Ugh, at least I haven’t heard any carols yet. Its not that I really mind carols (although at shopping centres do tend to overkill them), just like you said…in September?? Argh. Seeing all the trees and decorations is bad enough for me. The saddest I’ve been over excessive holidayness at shops though was earlier this year when they were putting out Easter eggs during January.

Posted by
Jasmine @ 09/29/2007 10:42 PM EDT
Here’s a ghost story for you- our next door neighbor finally moved out and told us the story of why; something was knocking things off their kitchen counter and dresser in their bedroom. They had no pets and the kids had all grown and moved out, they couldn’t explain it and it bothered them enough that they sold the house.
I’m not sure what I believe about hauntings, it’s somewhere between “anythings possible” and “that’s total BS”, but the unsolved cause being enough to upset them, is something in itself.

Fortunately I haven’t noticed Christmas stuff here in California-not yet, anyway.
I’ve been rediscovering the old Disney cartoons on YouTube lately, with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and the like. Some of them I hadn’t seen since I watched the Disney Channel regularly about 20 years ago. Damn those guys for not playing any of their old stuff lately! Just wanted to let everyone know that there is an additional set of Marshmallow Peeps “Spooky Friends” in addition to the ones Matt reviewed. It’s a pumpkin, a ghost, and (I think) a mummy. Found them at K-Mart today. Pic on the link.
These things are a little…gummier…than regular Peeps. They taste a bit like the knock-off Peeps from Frankford called “Marshmallow Pals”–more solid, a little fruity for some reason.
My Costco got rid of everything Halloweeny except for a few smoke machines. Christmas stuff is out in force. Buy, buy, BUY.

Spoodles @ 09/29/2007 11:39 PM EDT
I feel really bad, since Phiones don’t evolve. It’s like “here, have a consolation prize.” It’s nice that they are doing Manaphy events in addition to the regular event pokes for this generation.
Otherwise, you have to play through Pkmn Ranger or know somebody who’s connected. I fell into the latter category, and will be forever grateful. She’s my favorite poke
I’m set up now such that I’ll have all of the D/P dex when I finish the story. I could care less about Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus. I’m so happy I have Manaphy, though. I love May and movie 8.

Whoops, Movie 9

Posted by
Knegative @ 09/29/2007 11:53 PM EDT
I really don’t have much to add except to ask this pokemon question:
Does Manaphy have Heart Swap when it hatches? I looked it up and it said it learned it at 76, yet my level 50 one already has it.
And I agree that Phione’s only existence is to add another pokedex entry. It’s somehow BIGGER than Manaphy, and lacks Tail Glow and Heart Swap.
Fortunately for me, I had a Magby with flame body on hand to hatch my Phione (pokemon with Magma Armor has this effect too)
I’ll also tell you of the “battle” I had with a kid at the TRU.
He told me he had level 100 pokemon, but my strongest was at 71, so he had to find some good pokemon near my level. In this kid’s (he couldn’t have been older than 13) case: This meant legendaries.
As much as I abhor the use of legendaries in a real battle, I disregarded it because:
1) The kid mostly had level 100 pokemon which was likely his normal team, and most of his legendaries were in the high 50s, low 60s (save for a level 70 Regigigas)
2) It was a little kid, with good chance that this was his first or second pokemon game, so he thought Legendaries were good to beat my Dream Team.
So here’s how it went down:
My dream team is: Golem (56, weakest one), Skuntank, Bronzong, Luxray, Staraptor, and Empoleon (71, strongest)
His team (what I saw): Luxray, Palkia, Dialga, Regigigas (level 70, strongest I saw), and Giratina (level 54 somehow, as you catch it at level 70 as well. I figure he got hosed in a trade with a hacked Giratina. Let’s see him try it in Battle Revolution)
How the batttle went down: It started with Golem vs Palkia, which I then switched out for Empoleon, which he then switched out for Luxray. Then I switched back to Golem, took out Luxray with Earthquake.
Then he brought out Regigigas. I used sandstorm and then earthquake. Not realizing Regigigas has the Slow Start ability, he used Superpower and Fire Punch with Golem still standing. Then I switched to Staraptor. Then he switched to Dialga. I then used Close Combat on Dialga twice to bring him down, and then he brought out Giratina.
Then I brought out Empoleon (Ice Beam for Dragon weakness). As his Giratina was preparing for Shadow Force (signature move, it dissappears for one turn and attacks pretty powerful the next). I decided to switch out for Staraptor so Shadow Force wouldn’t work.
The sad part is, when the kid realized that I could simply switch for Staraptor when he tried Shadow Force…he ran.
Sigh…
Regardless I appreciate it. I heard that they are supposed to come out with a Vista compatible version soon. As soon as I’m able I’ll take you up on your offer. And don’t feel bad, it’s one more rare than I would have had before!

I’ve been pretty lucky as far as illnesses go this season. The boy who is my friend but not my boyfriend gave me a head cold the other week and I kicked it in a day. He, unfortunately, smokes and thereby had it drag on for quite some time.

It depends on how much you want to spend. You can get an older Game Boy SP pretty cheap which will play all the older Pokemon games. Or you can splurge for the DS which plays all the older GBA games as well as the new Diamond and Pearl games.

I, like Dan H, would also be very interested in Godzilla stuff!
Godzilla was definitely my hero as a girl.
Mothra was (is) my mortal enemy — I have a moth phobia (Mottephobia)… I’ve had that for as long as I can remember.
Spiders, centipedes, etc… they don’t bother me. But, I’ve been known to scream and hyperventilate when moths are around. *shudder*
I remember a camping trip in college, during a run a moth the size of a fist flew from the waist high grass and landed on my chest. I remember screaming, and that’s it.
I woke up with 10 people around me; they’d all heard my scream from camp and thought I was being molested.
I thought I was having a heart attack… luckily didn’t piss myself when I fainted!
Just thought I’d stick with Matt’s suggestion for no real topic, and have a mighty convoluted ramble!
Happy SNT

Someone *please* help me identify this obscure 1980s toy line!
There were these toys in the late 1980s, had to be released between 86-89. They were like Popples for boys… they were rude, crude monster creatures with long tongues. When you squeezed the dolls stomachs, they made a fart-like sound, but it was supposed to be the sound of the doll making a “raspberry” with it’s tongue. I thought they were called Razzies or Razzles, but when I search the net for those, all I get is bad movies and candy/gum. (if anyone is wondering, these aren’t Boglins that I’m talking about)
Does anyone remember and know the name of this toy line? I figure if someone could help me, they’d be on X-E.
Thanks for reading!

I’d definitely push for a moratorium on the Wii/DS friend code thing for a while.
Oh, and I found cold rum/cider to be just as agreeable as hot rum/cider last night, if not more so. Simpler, too: 10 oz cider, 2-4 oz Captain Morgan, and a dash of cinnamon if you want it to feel like more than just that.
Downing two of those made me pretty agreeable to Disturbia, which popped out of the PPV menu last night and seemed like the right thing to order. Fun little movie.

I did watch the Goosebumps show. It didn’t last very long, maybe a year at best. I’m even hesistant to call it a tv show, it was more like a series one-hour tv specials based on the books. I definately remember “Living Dummy”, “Monster Blood” “Haunted Mask” and “One Day at Horrorland.”
I have no intention of seeing Saw 4, unless it’s on tv sometime.

Carnival Games is worth buying, but it’s not earth shattering. Think of it like Atari with updated graphics and motion controls. It doesn’t take to long to “get the hang of” most of the games, but they can be tough to master.

I didn’t know you were fluent in Gibberish.
Philip G. - Eczema is definitely torture. I’ve dealt with it on and off since probably 3rd grade, the itch is so impossible to deal with. My condolences.
I’m sick too, with this cold that just malingers…I’m usually quick to kick colds, and rarely get sick anyway, but I’ve had this since Tuesday. And I was already on antibiotics for a different thing by Wednesday, so this should have been gone fast. Blah.
Now I have to decide if I have the energy to go to my friends’ house to watch the Steelers game.
Wow, yet another SNT I missed, but hopefully this will my last one. I was out of town again training at the new job so I had no internet access, but I’m actually at the new job now and it’s dead here with nothing to do. Still being the new guy, I can only do so much so they won’t let me do much other than messing around on the net for the most part. Nice to be a part of the Sunday spillover of the SNT though.
And I’m happy to say that I met the new roommie today and will be moving next Saturday, thus ending my 25 day stretch of working somewhere with no days off. I think I’m on Day 21 of that right now. Now, there’ll be no more driving an hour and a half every weekend out of town to go to work. What was once out of town, will just be…town.

How does one grow an Alpaca? Does it need lots of watering?Would be need to see an Alpaca stand on the side of the road….

Ooooo, Goosebumps?! It’s as close as I’m gonna get to Are You Afraid of the Dark so I guess it will do. I tried to DVR all showings…too bad there are so many new shows I want to watch at the 8:00pm hour

That cider sounds tasty. I’ve got a bunch of rum left over from last night so I shall try it.
So does this free Showtime weekend last long enough to catch the new Dexter tonight? I’m watching Arachnophobia for the first time right now…I hope there’s a good payoff, because this is slooow.

squee4242 @ 09/30/2007 3:21 PM EDT
I love Arachnophobia! Saw it in the theater and everything. It’s kind of a sleeper, for sure, but there’s some serious spiderness to come later. Plus, John Goodman gets a good ol’ boy theme whenever he walks onscreen.

Posted by
Matt @ 09/30/2007 3:31 PM EDT
Arachnophobia, ruined me with spiders. The beginning where the painted up, tribal guys are telling them not to go into the jungle, but they do and that guy dies! If naked men in white face paint tell you do something, you better do it.
Has anyone seen the preview for the new Aliens Vs Predator movie? It actually looks purdy good. And it’s rated R. Wasn’t the last one PG-13?
In keeping with the random nature of this thread, I saw a new bunch of flavors for Jones Soda announced. Sorry if anyone has already mentioned these. However, it’s Sunday, and these are FOOTBALL themed sodas. Sweet Victory, Sports Cream, and Natural Field Turf are offered. Also, they have what’s sure to be everybody’s favorite salty soda- Perspiration.
Now, I’m pretty sure Matt’s not a football fan. But as a connoisseur of weird beverages, I still think he should review this crap. In fact, I’m BEGGING for a review. Click my name for a link.

spaz307 @ 09/30/2007 3:53 PM EDT
Someone did mention them, but they’re worth repeating. Mmmmmm.
Also, James: Yes, the last one was PG-13, and an overall mess according to most.

Matt @ 09/30/2007 3:55 PM EDT
Yeah, that trailer does look good. I’m really jazzed to see the Alien/Predator hybrid (I think they’re calling it the Predalien). They’ve been doing that kind of thing in the comics for years, with loads of hybrids and messing around with the Alien genetics and everything, but it’ll be nice to finally see it in a movie. I’m all for an R rating.
Arachnaphobia was great. And yeah, I agree, there’s not anything on this earth much scarier than a jungle guy with white face paint threatening you. Throw in some tribal drums ominously beating in the distance, and I’m haulin’ ass.

Posted by
DJ D @ 09/30/2007 3:56 PM EDT
Also, I figured out how to pronounce “akkaksakskaka”. If said properly 3 times, naked people in white face paint appear out of thin air and tell you not to go into the jungle.

Accidental Martyr - I hope you are an Alpaca farmer who is looking to get rid of some roving.
anyone else play World of Warcraft? I’m addicted. I need a ten step group to get me off. It’s worse b/c my addictions, for some reason kick up when the leaves start falling. Good thing Heroin was so last year… j/k
squee:
Yep, it looks like the Showtime Free Preview runs through tomorrow night (10/1). Thanks for bringing it to my attention. My fiancee has been watching the edited first season of Dexter that Directv has been showing for free, and now she’s excited that she can watch the season premiere.
I, too, saw Arachnophobia in the theater. My family was on vacation, we spent 2 weeks at our cabin, I remember we drove into the nearest big town (45 minutes away) to see it.
The theater had the sound so loud it was actually impossible to hear the talking over the sound effects. It actually burst two peoples’ eardrums before the theater listened and turned the sound down.
That’s really all I remember about the movie… I keep meaning to watch it when it’s on cable (which is all the time), and I get a headache just thinking about it; and I know that at home I could control the volume!
I also saw those new Jones soda flavors, and the thought of drinking anything named ‘Perspiration’ makes me gag.
Feel better, Matt!

Once it got going I liked it a lot, I was just dying until Goodman showed up. All good from then out
I think Accidental Martyr is a Colbert Report (or was
it Daily Show?) fan.
Thanks Big McLarge! I’m excited now…friends that have watched the first two episodes already said they were excellent, so looking forward to that.

Hey kids. I dunno how many people’ll be able to catch it, but… Travel Channel is running an all-day marathon of paranormal shows.
I can’t wait for the Most Haunted Live on October 19. They’re gonna be at the Winchester Mansion for like 7 hours live. I don’t care much for the show (it’s fun and camp) but I ADORE the Winchester Mansion. It’s just always seemed creepy as shit to me.
Right now, a show on UFOs is on the channel, though. Pretty standard fare, but fun nonetheless. I’ll probably load up both Grudge movies tonight, see how that works out.

I’ve been watching Showtime all day today. So far I’ve seen Suicide Kings, The Bad News Bears remake, and Yours, Mine and Ours. Later on I plan to watch Failure to Launch, Hustle and Flow, and The Devils Rejects.
Not to mention, the season premieres of Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters is on tonite.

JLAJRC @ 09/30/2007 5:40 PM EDT
So, I’m kind of required to work my full shift today even though there’s nothing to do, and I mean NOTHING to do here. For the last few hours we’ve all just sat around and read or played on the net. I have to be here for the next 2 hours and I’ve been spending my time reading past Countdown articles. I just read the one about the Halloween episode of Perfect Strangers and with my headphones strapped on I’m about to watch the accompanied video clips. I’m settling back for some good times. “Don’t be redeeculous.” (said in dodgy Balki voice)
JLAJRC Thanks for the reminder. My two guilty TV pleasures are Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy. I’m turn into a total girl (I’m normally not one btw) about Grey’s Anatomy and all the bizarre twists and turns. This whole George/Izzy/Kali thing has just got me tied up in nots.

and I guess doing some research on it, it was the top children’s TV show for 3 years! Interesting

I have been thinking about ARACHNOPHOBIA a lot lately since the outside of my house is still under invasion (brown widows and who knows what else). I haven’t started carry around a nail gun yet but it’s coming.
On another note, I watched JAWS: THE REVENGE today. It wasn’t as bad as I thought (hoped) it was going to be.
Yeah, there were flashbacks to things she wasn’t present for. Yeah, sharks don’t roar. Yeah, the shark could never swim that far that fast. It was ultimately just a very unnecessary movie that was very lame.
The ending really was bad though. Why did he explode (from multiple angles)??

Posted by
The Manimal @ 09/30/2007 10:16 PM EDT
Oh boy, Manimal. Jaws IV is legendary in my circle. Like you said, it’s just the most unnecessary movie ever, with such an abnormal and strange plot for the fourth film the series. The film does give me a soft spot for Lorraine G., though. There’s just something about her in this film that’s hard not to like.
The ending was edited six ways from Sunday, and the final result was terrible. I can’t recall the specifics, but clearly, how they killed the shark was not the way they originally filmed it. As it stands in the final cut, the shark just about explodes for no reason at all.
Even goofier was Van Peebles surviving — another late-in-the-day reshoot. It’s just hysterical to see him survive mostly unscathed after a giant great white chomps on him and drags him down, blood spilling everywhere.
I love that movie.

Matt @ 09/30/2007 10:34 PM EDT
Jaws IV the Revenge. Oh my. You know, you’d probably want revenge too if you had been killed three times.

Posted by
James Smith @ 09/30/2007 11:20 PM EDT
God, Jaws IV is so terribly good…emphasis on the terribly. Definetly a so-bad-it’s-good movie. It’s just so ridiculous and over the top and yet tries to take itself so seriously. I think there was a period of time there shortly after I first saw it that I really thought that sharks could roar if they stuck their head out of the water. As if I wasn’t absolutely freaked out by sharks enough already….I mean, I won’t even wade into the ocean waste deep. Seriously.

DJ D @ 10/01/2007 1:19 AM EDT
I couldn’t believe he exploded.
NOW, I COULD BE WRONG BUT I THOUGHT I THERE WAS A DIFFERENT ENDING. I saw it on AMC last year, I think. (I had never seen it unedited, all the way through until yesterday).
**Back from checking the surprisingly well-citied Wikipedia article. CLICK MY NAME**. I was right, there are different endings. I think the other version is better than the DVD one. Read and learn.
Another person hoping we get a review of the new Jones flavors (especially if you can dupe your coworkers into taking part again). They sound so wonderfully disgusting.

Molly @ 10/01/2007 6:09 AM EDT
Because I love, here is the “AMC/T.V. version”. You have to log in to watch it but I knew I was right!!
On the negative side, it’s 6:13 on a Monday morning and I am looking up JAWS IV clips…
Happy October everybody!
DJ D: Fun fact: the majority of shark attacks take place in ~3 feet of water. Okay, so it’s not so much fun as it is entirely horrifying and unnecessary. But I do what I can.

I also love Greys, but not a big fan of the liz/george/callie thing. That just seem to come out of nowhere. Plus, I think george/liz have a better chemistry as friends (they even remind me more of a bro/sis relationship than lovers).

Wow, a lot of peoples had got the crud lately. I just finally purged the weevils and nano-monkeys out of my system, and am just barely back up to cruising speed.
I love the ads for Goosebumps that CN is running. Very 70’s cheap Drive-In matinee style, with verrry creepy voice-over work to complete the vibe. That is how all ads for Grindhouse should have looked like.

Joker
I’ve been Faye Valentine for a couple years in college, not too many people ever knew who I was.
This year, I’m not yet too sure… may just have to go back to the old-standby of Columbia from RHPS. More people can place her than some of my other choices.

Joker - You could get everything from a thrift store - blue suit, yellow dress shirt, skinny tie…the only things you can’t buy are the fro and the 5′ long legs.
I’ll be Sally from Nightmare Before X-mas. But…I need a Jack.. and someone to paint me white and draw stitches on me….hmmm
Raechel: you should mix it up and go as Rocky!! all you need is some golden undies and some body grease!

Heh kingklash the narrator in those Goosebumps ads totally reminds me of the Thanksgiving trailer.
I think I might actually dress up this year, I’ve been looking for a cloak/robe for the whole Hogwarts thing. As for Spike, the only advice I have is that based on cosplay pics I’ve seen I think teased natural hair looks better than giant green afros.

Thanks for the response! The dolls were apparently called Razzcals, and were made by Matchbox in the late 80s. There isn’t much info available online about ‘em, but there are some for sale on eBay. This had been driving me nuts for years, but now I know, and knowing is 50% of the battle!
Thanks!
