09/24/2007: 2007’s Best Halloween Candy, Part I.

There seems to have been a small debate as to whether I was going to make the deadline for tonight’s entry. Guys, guys, guys! You know I usually wait until we’re at least two weeks into these little projects before I start letting people down. No, I made it. I’ve got five of this year’s greatest Halloween candies, right here.

God, I wish I didn’t have to go to work tomorrow. Why do I always get inspired to do the best “doing nothing” things when I have no time to do them? I really want to degenerate into a pool of couch slime and watch Dream Warriors or something right now, but there’s no time. Now, tomorrow night, I might have some time…but will I do it? There’s a moral in here if you peel away enough words. Don’t waste the time you have to do nothing doing something. Gon’ run that shit on a tee shirt with mah domain name underneath it, yes sir I am.

Survey: Weird one. Name a horror movie you’ve always wanted to see, but somehow never have, and count on everyone else to tell you if you’re missing out or not. I realize that this is a bit of a convoluted survey, but that’s okay, I have faith in us. If horror movies are too far from your point of interest, I guess we can open the doors to other types of films, too.

Anyone else seen Canibal Holocaust?

Its so bad that it is actually banned in 60 countires. The director was brought to court becuase the death scenes were so concincing that it was actually believed that the actors were killed.

I saw it and I gotta say. It was pretty damn bad. It was the only time iv ever seen a man have his penis chopped off and eaten on screen.

Yeah Chris, I have C.H. insane..
And DJ,D. I love ” I Spit On You’re Grave “..BRUTAL!

New Countdown might not be till morning. Sorry, I worked long, hard and late today. I’ve lost my smile. The good news is, no commuting for the rest of the week. :) :) :)

I have to admit that I don’t believe I’ve ever even heard of Cannibal Holocaust until Chris’s comment. Just looked it up…wow. Sounds like the kind of thing I need to see once, even if I know I’ll wish I hadn’t.

And yeah, I didn’t like the Halloween remake, either. That’s pretty much why I didn’t bother posting any blogs about it after its debut. I didn’t expect to love it, but I hated it a lot more than I thought I would. Just seemed utterly and totally pointless, and not in a “mindless fun” way or even a “good sleepy horror movie” way.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 10:51 PM EDT

Yeah, I remember there was this big controversy about Cannibal Holocaust as to whether or not some of the scenes, especially the scenes where people were being impaled on big sticks, were actually real or not. If so, that would technically make some of it a snuff film.

See, there’s just no reason to go chopping off people’s tallywackers. I mean, that aint right.

I’ve seen all or part of all of the Nightmare on Elm Street flicks, except for Part 4. It is worth renting?

Ghosted by Andy @ 09/25/2007 10:56 PM EDT

Definitely. Love Part 4. Always dug Alice. It has some pretty great kills, too. It wasn’t Dream Warriors, but they were still really trying.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 11:04 PM EDT

I’ve always preferred the atmospheric horror movies as opposed to the gorefests (nothing wrong with those but that stuff doesn’t scare me). You guys NEED to check out Session 9 for a great little spooky flick. A bunch of guys are hired to clean out the asbestos and junk from an old insane asylum (filmed in a real ex-insane asylum). Creepy, I say! I second Fright Night, just watched it a couple nights ago. Fright Night Part II is sadly out of print but I found a divx copy, will watch that tomorrow night. Another good creepy one is Dead and Buried from 1981. It is available from Netflix. Don’t miss the notorious syringe in the eye!

Cameron T, I don’t recommend “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” since it’s a film done to show a style (film noir) instead of telling an actual story. There is a strung together collection of iconic camera angles and lots of dark shots but not much of a plot to string them to. The overall production is hampered by the director’s quest to capture a certain look.

In short, the movie sucks ass.

That’s my 30 second review (and to think I looked forward to that movie for some reason).

Andy I’d say so. As much as I love the series, I’d have to say it started to go downhill a little around movie 5. Part 4 was the last one that didn’t start going for laughs as much as scares. I did really dig some of the stuff they did later on though. Part 5 is definetly the weekest one of the bunch. The same goes for the F13 series.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/25/2007 11:10 PM EDT

I just finished the article. I just got in the mood to read it all.

All of those things I want to try pretty much. I think those peeps candies would be a rip off for a trick or treater there isn’t much there, BUT if it was mixed in with other candies and they got like 5 of them mixed with others oh boy! THAT would be worth it!

Last year I wanted to buy a bunch of little moon pies and hand those out I think I’ll do that this year, even though there is a lot of little mexicans that live around here out of respect I could get some mexican candy huh. Hmmmm.

And WHY would you steal spiral notebooks? Candy I understand, toys are logical, but notebooks? I just saw 10 of them for a dollar. For a dollar Matt!! ’shakes head’

I am exaggerating but yes I would like to hear the story behind that.

Ghosted by Goob @ 09/25/2007 11:32 PM EDT

I still haven’t seen Re-Animator.

Gotta get on that. ‘Tis the season.

Ghosted by Another Matt @ 09/25/2007 11:33 PM EDT

I talked my mom into renting Cannibal Holocaust for me and my friends to watch one weekend while she was going to be out of town. We got to the part with the dismembered member and that was as far as we got. I may have to check some of the local mom and pop places to see if they still have a copy.

Ghosted by Dan H @ 09/25/2007 11:34 PM EDT

Hey, Matt–So sorry to hear that work is tearing you a new one. So, is this the first time that a daily Halloween article will be late on the Countdown? I mean, in terms of the entire history of the Countdown. Or, does this invariably happen at some point every year? This being my first official Countdown with you all, I don’t have any real history or memories to base it on.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/25/2007 11:44 PM EDT

I’ve always wanted to see Eraserhead. I don’t know, but a baby that looks like a cow’s head is something I probably shouldn’t miss.

Ghosted by IXPlodestuf @ 09/25/2007 11:44 PM EDT

Yeah, I wonder if he will make it on time…15 mins left and counting!

Ghosted by Tim @ 09/25/2007 11:45 PM EDT

Tim He said already that he prolly won’t make the deadline and it won’t be till morning. Guess we’ll just have to deal. I’m just glad he checked in. I do worry so.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/26/2007 12:08 AM EDT

hookers in a haunted house. i’m not making that up. i just heard about it a couple days ago, and i haven’t found a copy yet, but i’d really like to see it. it just sounds incredible.

Ghosted by scott @ 09/26/2007 12:15 AM EDT

DJ D

Mandi–Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave are 2 of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen, especially I Spit on Your Grave. You should make a night of it, and watch both back to back. Then take a shower. Hostel ain’t got nothing on that shit.

Now I must see them! I love thse kings of movies that get in under your skin and creep you the crap out. I hardly take a shower these days without having to poke my nose outside the shower curtain every few minutes when shit seems like everything’s way too calm for my liking. I’m sure the next few days after watching that marathon will be even more nerve wracking!:)

Ghosted by Mandi @ 09/26/2007 12:36 AM EDT

nightmare 3 & 4 were the best of the series imo

Ghosted by bong @ 09/26/2007 12:40 AM EDT

I’ve seen Army of Darkness but not Evil Dead 1 & 2, so those and Shaun of the Dead are on my list of ‘want to see’. I’m not much for the gore fests, I’m more of the thriller and humor type. I’d also like to see the original of the film that was about a town full of psychic kids with white hair, but I never remember the name.

Does anyone else think those little Peep tarantulas are cute? I think if I were a kid and got one of those in my bag, I’d keep it as a pet.

Ghosted by Moony @ 09/26/2007 1:17 AM EDT

im at work and there is no update yet!!! going to be a long and boring night. need a 24 hr. dollar store out there….

Ghosted by leo @ 09/26/2007 1:26 AM EDT

Let me get this straight. You mean newbies to the Countdown aren’t reading the prior year’s entries and all their attendant blog threads? 8O
Kidding. To answer your question, DJ D, it happens. Apparently at times real life takes precedence over skeleton lollies.
Moony, sounds like Children of the Corn?
I’d make a case for Rosemary’s Baby, though it comes off as dated in some ways. Still manages to be pretty creepy.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/26/2007 2:01 AM EDT

Sad but true; I’ve missed most of the classic horror movies like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. So yeah, someday I gotta get around to seeing those.

But anyway, I remember on another thread (I think it was the one announcing the start of the Halloween Countdown), someone mentioned a ride called Ghost Hunt at Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Connecticut with a deliciously campy theme song called “The Mighty Boocifer”. (Matt, you better have added it to the Halloween Jukebox. Incidentally, that park is supposed to be haunted, apparently by an Indian chief who was cheated out of his land by our wonderful Puritan ancestors. Never been to that park, but all my family is in CT, and I’ve heard about it a lot.) Well, I was surfing YouTube to get some info on the ride Ghost Hunt, and stumbled upon a decent supernatural anime series called by that name. Even if you’re not an anime fan, you might enjoy this for the season.

I have never seen any of the “Faces Of Death” series– I don’t know if these movies count as “horror” but the VHS covers always scared the shit out of me, more than any other horror title. Have any of you seen these? Are they “real” as they claim?

Hooray for the shout-out to “976-EVIL”. ’80s horror movies are THE BEST! I have to add one of my favorites– “Deadly Friend” starring Matthew Laborteaux from “Little House On The Prairie” (maybe Melissa Sue Anderson recommended the experience) and Kristy Swanson– if only for the scene where a well-aimed basketball causes Anne Ramsey’s head to EXPLODE.

Matt– I just saw an ad for a Target exclusive: Special Edition Hershey’s Kiss-shaped candy corn flavored candy. It’s not chocolate, and it’s not mellowcreme– so what is it??? I hope you’ll tell me.

someone go knock on matts door. i think he is lost in halo land……wont get another entry until june

Ghosted by leo @ 09/26/2007 3:23 AM EDT

IXPlodestuf: Eraserhead really creeped me out. It’s incoherent and just generally messed up. It’s unsettling because weird shit goes on and everyone treats it as normal, like a nightmare on film. The scene that sticks in my mind is where the guy eats dinner with his girlfriend and her parents and they have “man-made” chicken.

My friend kept trying to tell me that the baby was cute. wtf.

Ghosted by Bluejay @ 09/26/2007 7:29 AM EDT

Now that I’m not “down with the kids”, I don’t know what kind of Hallowe’en sweets (that’s ‘candy’ in America) are offered up UK-wise these days. But I do know that at very most, it’s standard ‘candy’ with maybe the odd generic bat slapped on the packaging to make it seasonal; not much of the more extravagant US-style treats unless you’re willing to shop around a bit.

Oh, and horror movie I’ve never watched but always meant to – ‘Child’s Play’. I should probably hang my head in shame. After years of no Chucky, I actually bought it on DVD a couple of months ago, but haven’t actually sat down to watch it yet.

Ghosted by Jay Firestorm @ 09/26/2007 9:02 AM EDT

Just a quick question. if the entry for last night is coming today, does that mean we get 2 articles today, or just miss an article?

Ghosted by Chris @ 09/26/2007 9:03 AM EDT

scott: Hookers In A Haunted House? Seriously? Dammit, now I’ve got to add that shit to my wish list…. :)

Sorry this is off topic, but i’ve been passing the time, reading the notorious Photog blog, for… i don’t know how long.
Have read over 500 posts and the suspense is killing me.Does he ever show up?
I’ve never laughed so much, btw…you guys are so funny.
When i finish reading all posts (and i will!) my life will be complete.
Thankyou X-E

I’ve been meaning to check out Fright Night. d]Did you know that the original version of the Library Ghost from Ghostbusters was used in that Fright Night because it was deemed to scary for Ghostbusters-
Erasurehead is another one I have been meaning to see.

Matt, I would buy T-Shirts in a snap. I love DJD’s idea about X-E T-Shirt day.

I am late, but o well. Sky Captain sucked. I was bored to tears, got up and cleaned house instead.
Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorites. Want to see the next movie they made together, though it isn’t anywhere near the same thing, just the same guys.

Ghosted by Whit @ 09/26/2007 10:18 AM EDT

I’ve seen a lot of horror movies and consider myself a big fan of that genre, yet I’ve somehow managed not to watch Evil Dead. So … is it as good as people claim it is?

DJ D: is i spit on your grave the one that opens with a guy getting head from a decapitated head?

Dr Stretch: just check out IMDB. apparently there’s a whole series of Hookers in Places

sorry bout gettin your name wrong, Dr. Stretch. is that a reference to mr. fantastic?

i’m an idiot. don’t anyone talk to me.

Ghosted by scott @ 09/26/2007 10:45 AM EDT

I checked and it doesn’t look like Shaun of the Dead is airing in the next couple weeks, but I’m sure Comedy Central will be airing it constantly as Halloween gets closer.
Sorry diamonds, he never shows. Not definitively anyway.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/26/2007 10:52 AM EDT

shaun of the dead = classic. evil dead 2 is a must see, and anybody interested in horror should start with the granddaddy night of the living dead! http://www.archive.org/details/night_of_the_living_dead

Ghosted by drbong @ 09/26/2007 11:13 AM EDT

So much good stuff here. Always cool to talk horror movies with people that love horror movies.

A couple of comments.

freudguy: Session 9 is really great. I was expecting not to like it, but it’s one of the creepiest movies I’ve seen.

The new Halloween: I didn’t love it. But I didn’t hate it either. I thought the prequel half of the movie was pretty good, but the remake half kind of sucked. A couple years back I showed Halloween (the original) to my girlfriend at the time. She’s somebody who got scared at 13 Ghosts. Seriously. And she had no reaction at all to Halloween. Not sure what that says about society and desensitization to violence (if anything). I think it’s a lot like Psycho. What made people faint 50 years ago just doesn’t do the job now. Not sure where this is going. Obviously nowhere.

that gummy skeleton ribcage looks like a transformers logo, so it’s awesome.

Also, Leprechaun 2, cause I’ve seen the rest.

I’ve also never seen either Last House or I Spit on Your Grave.

I must be the only person on the planet who enjoyed “Sky Captain” and own the DVD. It’s a great way to pass the time and the visuals are great.

Last night, I saw a commercial for a new dvd called “Flight of the Living Dead.” Yes, zombies on an airplane.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 09/26/2007 12:03 PM EDT

Cannibal Holocaust is a lot smarter than people give it credit for being. There’s a tragic humanist story underneath all those special effects.

Lisa — Faces of Death was largely fake. Although some of the news footage was real, the more explicit stuff was fake. The BBC did a fascinating segment about it in their documentary on the snuff film legend: http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-2695085153314436603. Skip to the 23 minute mark to see the Faces of Death segment. There’s also a spot devoted to Cannibal Holocaust where they talk about the controversy and show how they did some of the effects!

Ghosted by Phen @ 09/26/2007 12:19 PM EDT

I know these have pretty much been covered, but I have to agree that Psycho is absolutely great and everyone should see it at least once. I saw Rosemary’s Baby when I was pregnant with my daughter… whoops… but still a good creepy movie. I bought Slither to have playing for people out our annual Halloween party last year, but still haven’t gotten around to watching it myself, I’ll have to break it out now.

I don’t know if I am the only one that saw this one, but The Gate was the first horror movie I ever watched. Scared me just enough never to dig in the yard again.

Ghosted by Heather @ 09/26/2007 12:51 PM EDT

I have to weigh in on Slither – it’s hilarious. And I usually can’t even stand campy horror.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 09/26/2007 1:08 PM EDT

for old horror/thriller movies check out Turner Classic Movies every Friday night after midnight. they have one or two films each Friday as part of their TCM “Underground” they show stuff they usually wouldn’t show at any other time. a week or so ago i saw Dementia 13 for the first time after wanting to see it for years. it was o.k nothing special.

since it was brought up already,Showtime has had Fright Night on rotation this month. it wasn’t as good as i remember it being since it had been many years since i had last saw it

aside from the original Night of the Living Dead,I’ve never gotten the appeal of the sequels/remakes.

Ghosted by TheGrid @ 09/26/2007 2:09 PM EDT

scott: No worries man. It’s actually a reference to “Sketch Turner” from ComixZone (I adopted/stole it for my online name). A friend added the “Dr” part… long story.
Kapprika: Short answer: No. No it isn’t. You’d actually be fine skipping Evil Dead altogether, and going right into ED2 and Army of Darkness. The first movie is (IMO) the crew attempting to refine their skills. By numbers 2 and 3/AoD, they know what they’re doing, Ash is a bad ass (unlike “Ashley” from part 1), and everything is much funnier.

Ghosted by Dr Sketch @ 09/26/2007 2:45 PM EDT

Hey Matt, where did you get the candy for this countdown entry? For the past two days every time I pass by a convienience store or food mart I duck my head in there and none of them have had it. Nor have they had those pumpkin icebrakers you wrote about a couple weeks back.
