09/24/2007: 2007’s Best Halloween Candy, Part I.

There seems to have been a small debate as to whether I was going to make the deadline for tonight’s entry. Guys, guys, guys! You know I usually wait until we’re at least two weeks into these little projects before I start letting people down. No, I made it. I’ve got five of this year’s greatest Halloween candies, right here.

God, I wish I didn’t have to go to work tomorrow. Why do I always get inspired to do the best “doing nothing” things when I have no time to do them? I really want to degenerate into a pool of couch slime and watch Dream Warriors or something right now, but there’s no time. Now, tomorrow night, I might have some time…but will I do it? There’s a moral in here if you peel away enough words. Don’t waste the time you have to do nothing doing something. Gon’ run that shit on a tee shirt with mah domain name underneath it, yes sir I am.

Survey: Weird one. Name a horror movie you’ve always wanted to see, but somehow never have, and count on everyone else to tell you if you’re missing out or not. I realize that this is a bit of a convoluted survey, but that’s okay, I have faith in us. If horror movies are too far from your point of interest, I guess we can open the doors to other types of films, too.

um, Brokeback Mountain is wonderful.

I guess the only horror flick I haven’t seen that I want to see (that I can think of) is Phantasm. I think I saw part of this a long time ago, but never all the way through. Not sure why.

A couple of comments on other movies:

Suspiria – Definitely worth checking out. As is his first entry in the Masters Of Horror series, Jenifer, which is one of the best horror movies of the last 5 years easy.

The Devil’s Rejects – I liked House Of 1000 Corpses, but I loved The Devil’s Rejects. Just crazy, homicidal anarchy.

Dark Water – Didn’t really like the Japanese version and absolutely hated the American version. What a waste of Jennifer Connelly.

A couple of other must sees:

May – Underrated weirdness. Great movie.

High Tension – I actually pulled out a clump of my hair the first time I saw this. Fucking scary. Stupid, stupid, twist ending, though.

Shaun of the Dead… my second favorite movie of all time (just behind the Nightmare before Christmas). You absolutely HAVE to see it. I think everyone should. Even if you don’t appreciate British humor, there are some visuals you’ll enjoy.

Oh believe me, I am an absolute fan of British Humour with most of my friends’ only exposure is Monty Python & The Holy Grail (which to me is only the tip of the Monty Python Iceberg). Hell, I have the complete DVD set of The Flying Circus (the original 14 dvd box set…before they shrank the cases and added 2 more discs not two years after I got it. I’m still pissed about that). I just never saw Shaun of The Dead, but I want to (and I’ve been meaning to see Hot Fuzz too. I really want to see that one.)

Speaking of some other posts, most of my exposure (and probable disinterest) in horror flicks was by being forced to watch them at sleepovers. This includes Jaws, Scream, and the remake of House on Haunted Hill (which was terrible).

I second or third Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I’ve been meaning to watch it for years but it just doesn’t happen.

Ghosted by Zharicant @ 09/25/2007 11:47 AM EDT

Oh and Trilogy of Terror was pretty disappointing. The only remotely decent part is the evil doll part but even that wasn’t all that scary somehow.

Yeah I was gonna say…that’s a serious waste of an open slot for a horror marathon. I’d feel almost challenged to come up with a worse list.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 12:05 PM EDT

It’s not easy to see what the fuss for Psycho is about?! Along with the original Halloween, it DEFINED the modern-day horror/suspense flick. It was the predecessor for all the movies in this genre released in subsequent decades. It’s actually a very deep movie, unlike Hollywood today which seems to think the bloodier a film is the scarier it is. Psycho is studied in film classes to this day because every scene was set up to have some significance.

Ghosted by Pulley @ 09/25/2007 12:22 PM EDT

I would go with AMC Monsterfest all the way. Every year it gets better.

Ghosted by Bill @ 09/25/2007 12:27 PM EDT

Squee4242,

I’d avoid Cabin Fever if I were you. It wasn’t really scary, and I felt it tried too hard to be campy. Plus, it has that shithead from boy meets world as its protagonist. There’s a scene where he’s trying to do the sex with some girl, and he actually has his finger in a rotting flesh wound in her thigh…It’s pretty bad. Oh, and then she shaves her skin off. That sounds like a case for, but trust me, it’s not remotely worthwhile.

Ghosted by Ken @ 09/25/2007 12:58 PM EDT

Ah, Ken, you underestimate my love of Boy Meets World. That sounds pretty awful though.
Pulley, I think Psycho is a great movie and I’m in total agreement with you about it’s significance. I’m just saying that if you’ve never seen the movie and only know it through pop culture, you might just find it hard to see why you’re supposed to care about some secretary and her embezzlement. I don’t want to go as far as to say that if you’re the type to appreciate it for it’s significance you’d have already seen it, but I think it’s definitely required watching if you consider yourself a film buff, horror or otherwise. And here is where I admit I have a big list of Hitchcock I need to see, like Rear Window, The Birds, Vertigo…basically anything that isn’t Psycho, in fact ;)
JLAJRC, if you loved the Ed Wood biopic, Glen or Glenda? is definitely the one to watch.
What an awful lineup that Fest has. There are like, 4 decent movies there.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/25/2007 1:26 PM EDT

I must have the spider peeps! I’ve never seen the spiders, skulls, or bats, but I did almost buy some ghosts yesterday at wal mart.

To answer the survey: House of 1000 Corpses. I’ve seen enough bits and pieces to maybe total 15 minutes worth of the movie. It’s one I’ve always wanted to see, but just never got around to doing so.

I tried to post this last night, but I didn’t want to over-stimulate anybody before they went to bed, but QVC started their Christmas programming at midnight (Eastern time) last night. They’re only doing 24 straights hours of Christmas programming for now, it’s their 3 month countdown to Christmas. I stayed up until 2:30 AM watching Santa’s Toy Shop when my alarm goes off at 6.

I can’t help it, I love the music, the sets, the crap they sell (even though I’ve never purchased anything from them) and I absolutely love listening to people calling in. It’s always old ladies that sound like they’d be from my family. Like last night, some old lady ordered a snowman or snowglobe ornament or some crap, anywho she was talking about how her and her granddaughter just absolutely love snowmen and the host asked “So what do you and your granddaugter like about snowmen?” and the old lady replies “I don’t know…… [3 second silence] … we just like snow”.

Classic.

Ryane: Just because I say it’s bad doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some redeeming qualities. I’ll readily admit that the barn scene was intriguing. You’ll see what I mean when you watch it. And that girl is quite… um… freakishly animated.

Joker: the Wicker Man remake is a joke, too. I fell asleep and lost a little respect for Nicolas Cage’s acting abilities.

Brilliantpants: You have to see Psycho. It is a classic and you’re missing out not having seen the famous shower scene. It was revolutionary in its time. After you watch it, it’s interesting to read how the shower scene was done and what the audience’s reaction was. Another Hitchcock movie I would highly recommend, not a horror movie but instead a suspense thriller, is North By Northwest. Pulley: I’m proud to say that I fell in love with Hitchcock’s work through a high school film class. :)

I loved Blair Witch, I don’t care what anyone says. I also loved that the first time my best friend and I watched it, the lights went out and the house was hit by 130 mph winds right after a very shocking part of the film. We were hiding in the closet, scared shitless. Good times, good times.

Ghosted by Special K @ 09/25/2007 2:32 PM EDT

I really liked the original Blair Witch. Watched it alone in a dark room on a stormy night, and was kind of freaked by the end. The first half is enjoyable on a “I’d love to go on a random trip like that” level, and the last half is nice and spooky.

The sequel is an unbelievable pile of shit, but somehow, also a fun movie.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 3:18 PM EDT

I hate horror movies (I am probably the only one on here to say that), but I would have to say Shaun of the Dead. I love British humor and the boyfriend has seen it a dozen times, I just have never sat down to watch the whole thing. I also want to see Army of Darkness, for some reason that is the only one of the series I haven’t seen.

Ghosted by Alyssa @ 09/25/2007 3:38 PM EDT

I’ve also never seen Blair Witch, but wanted too.

I just read of a DVD review of the first “Return of the Living Dead” film, and now I want to see it.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 09/25/2007 3:39 PM EDT

As much as I love horror movies, I’ve missed out on a lot of them. I’m only 18, so most of the classic slasher movies were before my time, and scrounging up the money to buy DVD box sets is difficult. As for more recent movies, I have no steady mode of transportation to a theater. When I lived at home I had to deal with my mom’s easily-scaredness and my dad’s distaste for violence in general. It would be easier to list the ones I have seen. Just assume that I want to see any that I haven’t.

I have only seen the first Nightmare on Elm Street, the first 5 Friday the 13ths, plus Freddy vs Jason. I have seen It and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I love scary clowns. As for the more recent/less classic ones, I’ve seen 1408, The Ring, Signs, and One Missed Call. I saw the most recent Halloween a few weeks ago.

I also saw Dead Silence. It was boring, and that’s coming from someone who is genuinely afraid of ventriloquist dummies.

Ghosted by Hazzard @ 09/25/2007 3:40 PM EDT

Rear Window is my favorite Hitchcock film. Shot for shot, there may not be a better movie. Suspense-wise, Vertigo and North by Northwest are close seconds.

Ghosted by KJX @ 09/25/2007 4:14 PM EDT

I have fondish memories of Blair Witch as the last R-rated movie I had trouble getting into. It scared the hell out of us and I was into it at the time (I think I have one of the companion books somewhere) but it doesn’t hold up to repeated viewing. But it could just be the motion sick-inducing camera work.
BTW did anybody catch the Psycho gag on The Daily Show last night?

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/25/2007 4:24 PM EDT

I’ve never seen “Last House on the left” or the original “Hills have eyes”. I’ve been meaning to forever and have seen the remake of Hills , just wondering if the original is worth it. Oh and Zombi by Dario Argento either which is sad because I love zombie movies.

Ghosted by Dan H @ 09/25/2007 4:49 PM EDT

I’ve tried watching the original Hills Have Eyes, but the gods conspired against me.
- I rented it from Netflix and the disc they sent me had a crack that ran from one edge to the center hole. I sent it back and flagged it as damaged.
- I got a new disc from Netflix and managed to get twenty minutes into the movie before a disc read error stopped the show. I took the disc out and it looked like someone used steel wool to clean the bottom. I sent it back and flagged it as damaged.
- Netflix sent me a new disc. It was the same one they sent me the first time, with the crack.
- I gave up on Netflix and bought the disc from Barnes and Noble. I put in my brand new movie and got a disc read error. It wouldn’t work in any of my players.
I sent it back for a refund and have resigned myself to never seeing that movie.

Dr Sketch, not only did I see Return to Horror High, I deliberately set out to see it by NetFlixing it. :) I heard it was hilariously incomprehensible, and I was not disappointed. ;) I think the best part is when Stephen pulls off the mask and yells “Kastleman! You honky!” Both were white. Glorious.

I’ve never seen the original version of Dark Water completely; I saw the first half but had to go to class and never had an opportunity to finish. So I watched the remake not too long ago, and I don’t get the hatred this movie received. I think that it was a mistake to bill it as a horror; it’s really more of a drama with horror elements in it. I loved the relationship between mother and daughter, and the last fifteen minutes of that movie made me cry like I’d been beat. It was very sweet and beautiful, I thought. But that’s just my uninformed two cents. :)

Ghosted by LemonWitch @ 09/25/2007 5:08 PM EDT

I’m not really a horror fan, so I can’t think of any that I “need” to see. I do recommend Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, more because they’re funny than scary. (Somehow I ended up not liking Army of Darkness as much.)

I love The Hitcher. It’s not exactly scary, but it’s suspenseful and kind of twisted. I don’t own it but I need to.

There’s also Vampire’s Kiss, a Nicholas Cage movie. It’s not really a horror film, but it’s hilarious and would make a great review for the Halloween Countdown (hint hint, Matt! I bet you’d like it, if you haven’t already seen it). I’m not sure which is better, the movie or the DVD commentary.

(sorry if this gets posted more than once. My internet connection’s been on the fritz.)

PS – Apparently there was a recent remake of The Hitcher. I haven’t seen it; I was referring to the 1986 version.

Labyrinth. I think David Bowie in a codpiece is horror enough.

A lot of people forget that Leigh’s character was an embezzler, getting away with her ill-gotten loot. Until Norman and “Mother” got to her, of course.

Dan H: While I haven’t seen the first Zombi, I did recently pick up Zombi3 (local Blockbuster sells used movies 4/$20, so I get lots of cheap movies). I hope Zombi and Zombi2 (if there was one) were better than the third one. It was a complete, incomprehensible piece of shite.
LemonWitch: I haven’t seen the original Dark Water yet, but I was sadly disappointed by the remake (again, Blockbuster special). It was billed (on the DVD cover) as being the latest horror movie from the creators of Ringu, so I was expecting some crazy horror. I agree, they should have billed it as a thriller instead, or maybe even a drama due to the “is she crazy/isn’t she crazy” theme. It was a beautiful ending though…
Bluejay: Great timing, I just finished (as in, ten minutes ago) the remake of The Hitcher. Crazy movie, definitely worth the time to watch it. Something about a killer who doesn’t really have a motivation beyond “because I was bored” gives me the jibblies every time. The fact that he killed just because he could makes him nightmare fodder for sure! :)

Ghosted by Dr Sketch @ 09/25/2007 6:03 PM EDT

Dan — Nosferatu has two or three great moments, the exact same two or three clips you see in documentaries all the time, but I’ve never made it all the way through in one sitting without falling asleep. The two silent horror films that really creep me out are “The Golem” and Jean Epstein’s “Fall of the House of Usher”.

I think Suspiria is the best supernatural horror film made in the past thirty years. It uses grating music and oversaturated Technicolor to pull you into its nightmare fairy tale. It predates the slasher genre and is equal parts Arthouse and Horror, though, so if gorgeous cinematography and dream-logic aren’t your thing, you might get a little pissed. You can watch one of its many infamous scenes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6zJGUUiG0c.

The Shining is a great epic film. I’ve watched it many times, but I’ve never found it the slightest bit frightening. Not even spooky.

I love Romero’s Zombie movies. They’re great satire. But Night of the Living Dead is the only one that’s outright terrifying. See the THX remastered version if you haven’t! The only other Zombie movie I liked was Fulci’s “Zombie,” and that was more because the scenery was pretty.

I’ve never seen “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.” I tried to get it from Netflix, but it’s gone out of print. And I want to see “The Vault of Horror.”

Ghosted by Phen @ 09/25/2007 6:20 PM EDT

God, there are a good number of horror movies I want to see, but I just never get around to it. :( I’m really hoping to catch some good stuff on Monsterfest this year. I missed all the good stuff last time.

Anyway, the highest on my list is probably The Exorcist. I saw part of it on TV a long, long time ago, but my mom made me stop watching it and it was edited to all hell anyway. I also want to see Psycho and Rosemary’s Baby.

check out the original for sure. The remake is all about the surprise, shock n’ gore but in terms of substance I thought it was lacking.

/shock n’ gore sounds like a delicious candy treat

IFC is a great channel for when they show horror films. I’ve seen Halloween, Evil Dead, Hills Have Eyes, Dead Alive, and the TCM on it.

Speaking of the Hills Have Eyes, that is one of the few films where I think the remake is better than the original. The villains in the first film are basically a bunch of bald guys. They look like the ones you see in the old-school pro wrestling. The film is also boring. The mutants in the remake look like monsters, and the kills are better.

Okay,

having at one time worked at Blockbuster,I got free rentals and we had a sweeet horror section.

Everyone has to see Happy Birthday to Me
it stars Melissa sue Anderson from little house on the prarie, as this teen who has a serious brain injury then wakes up and tries to kill her friends in really gross ways…like the one guy getting a shish kabob through his eye and skull…

The other I can’t think of the name, but its about a killer baby. Like it busts out of the moms stomach and it kills the doctors and nurses in the delivery room, and only stays normal for the mom, and tries to kill everyone else. My mom saw it when she was pregnant with me, and the people in the movie had the same last name as we did…so she freaked.

I’ve heard about Happy Birthday to Me but didn’t know waht it was about exactly. I’ll have to see if I can track down a copy, if nothing else to see Mary from Little House shish kabob someone.

“976-EVIL.”

Robert Englund (Freddy!) directed this flick about about people who turn into Satanic killers by dialing a phone number.

I used to beg my mom to rent “976-EVIL” every time we went to the video store. The cover art intrigued me because it featured “Evil Ed” Thompson from “Fright Night.”

Alas, mom thought it was too violent for a 10 year old girl, so I was forced to rent “The Goonies” again and again.

An interesting side note, “Evil Ed” Thompson (aka Stephen Geoffreys) is now an accomplished gay-porn actor. Some of his movies include “Cock Pit,” “Butt Blazer” and “Uncut Glory.”

No wonder my mom wouldn’t let me rent that damn video!

Have to agree with everyone’s assesments about Shaun of the Dead – awesome movie. My wife and I both now have the same reaction whenever we watch a true zombie movie now. I would also recommend Slither as a good follow up to Shaun of the Dead.

As for movies I haven’t seen yet – is Wolf Creek any good?

Ghosted by jjwspider @ 09/25/2007 8:59 PM EDT

Yes, Slither is a GREAT one! I had a lot of fun watching that last Halloween–

Ghosted by Joker @ 09/25/2007 9:28 PM EDT

Embarrassingly, The Exorcist. I’ve never seen it half way through; watched about 10 minutes on Monsterfest and it put me to sleep. Some day…

I have a Slither poster in my room, but I haven’t seen that, either. Not even material goods and the bashing of Halloween can motivate me enough to order that shit. It’s too obscure to get at Blockbuster.

I’ve also never seen Halloween 6 ALL the way through; never seen the last 10 minutes which is apparently the most epic. Wow, I feel like a total pussy right now. I’m going to go cry.

Come to think of it, I do want to see the rob zombie Halloween remake. Maybe when it hits DVD.

On, and can I just mention I’m posting from my new iPod Touch?

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 09/25/2007 10:00 PM EDT

Wow, I’ve just read up on all the comments from last night and I’ve got so much to say I actually had to jot down notes as I went…Ok, off to it:

squee4242 Punkinhead (yeah, as far as I’m concerned that’s the way it should be spelled) did change somewhat later in the series. Later on, Ed Hurley’s body was used to actually bring Punkinhead to life, and Punky seemed to able to get around a lot better. Thanks to some dodogy cgi, he was climbing buildings and jumping all over the place.

–As far as Romero goes, I think he’s a legend. I personally hated the Dawn of the Dead remake, mostly for the presence of too many big names and one thing that as far as I’m concerned is the most tragic and ridiculous thing to happen to horror in the last 10 years–RUNNING ZOMBIES. Romero has publicly expressed his disgust for them and I agree. Running zombies are lamer than vampires without fangs. That being said, of course I have great love for the original NotLD, but my favorite of the series has always been Day of the Dead (the one the seems to get the least amount of attention). Tom Savini was at the height of his career there and it’s one of the most realistically gory movies I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, there’s a remake in the works with Nick Cannon and Tera Reid that involve zombies that run and jump out of windows or some such nonsense. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Raechel Yeah, I agree, most American remakes of the Asian movies leave a lot to be desired. One of the creepiest movies I’ve ever seen is The Eye, and it’s being remade with Jessica Alba in the lead. Aside from the obvious eye candy (bad pun intended), I’m sure it’ll be a giant groan.

Special K Oh, all right. Cool points are restored. But you’ve got some catching up to do, young lady.

T-Shirts–name the place and price and I’m there. I think we should all pitch ideas and let Matt choose his faves. It could be our secret code. We could declare a “Wear Your X-E Shirt Day” and whenever you see someone wearing one it could be kind of like a Fight Club thing. You just pass each other and mutter things in code like, “ninja turtle pudding pies”, or “microbone”.

Bill I’ll join you in defending Emily Rose. I kind of dug it. And you should definetly check out The Devil’s Backbone. It’s good stuff, and a little unsettling.

–One of my top faves from the 80’s that never gets old is Fright Night. Anyone who’s too young to have exprienced it should check it out asap. You really missed out on that one. Too bad Evil Ed turned into a strung out, gay porn star, but I read on the Fango site not too long that he’s making a new movie now called Sick Girl that’s supposed to be his return to mainstream horror–not to be confused with the recent “Masters of Horror” movie of the same name…..”Oh, you’re so COOL Brewster!”

Jessica Marie Sorry, butI gotta disagree. I loved Pet Semetary.

MandiLast House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave are 2 of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen, especially I Spit on Your Grave. You should make a night of it, and watch both back to back. Then take a shower. Hostel ain’t got nothing on that shit.

Chris Martin May was really great, and very underrated. I loved High Tension until the twist. Well, I kinda dug the twist too, but it was completely illogical. I’ll try to be vague here so as not to spoil anything for anybody, but the whole car chase scene basically made the twist impossible. There’s no way it could have happened. Otherwise, a great, brutal movie.

Cameron T, dont bother seeing the Halloween reamke. It sucks.

It spends way too much time on myers childhood, which was turned from eerily normal in the original movie to trailer trash in this film.

There is no exposition, the charachters are set up to die literally a few minutes after you meet them.

Loomis who seemed to be strong, but slightly insane from the fact that no one was listening to him, comes off weak and innefectual.

ANd mIchael goes from soulless killer in the body of a normal man, to a human behemaouth.
