09/24/2007: 2007’s Best Halloween Candy, Part I.

There seems to have been a small debate as to whether I was going to make the deadline for tonight’s entry.  Guys, guys, guys!  You know I usually wait until we’re at least two weeks into these little projects before I start letting people down.  No, I made it.  I’ve got five of this year’s greatest Halloween candies, right here.

God, I wish I didn’t have to go to work tomorrow.  Why do I always get inspired to do the best “doing nothing” things when I have no time to do them?  I really want to degenerate into a pool of couch slime and watch Dream Warriors or something right now, but there’s no time.  Now, tomorrow night, I might have some time…but will I do it?  There’s a moral in here if you peel away enough words.  Don’t waste the time you have to do nothing doing something.  Gon’ run that shit on a tee shirt with mah domain name underneath it, yes sir I am.

Survey: Weird one.  Name a horror movie you’ve always wanted to see, but somehow never have, and count on everyone else to tell you if you’re missing out or not.  I realize that this is a bit of a convoluted survey, but that’s okay, I have faith in us.  If horror movies are too far from your point of interest, I guess we can open the doors to other types of films, too.

First?

Hope so.

Been waiting.

IT… I’ve read the book twice now (just finished it today) and have yet to see the movie. I dunno if I want to, Derry just seems like it could be my town. Kinda creepy to think about it.

Sweet. love the new candy articles, think i may have worn out my F5 though…

damn.  so close.

I’ve always wanted to see “The Vanishing”, but the original one and not the American remake. I also want to see the original “Wicker Man”.

Posted by Byrdo @ 09/24/2007 11:31 PM EDT

Damn…I think I’ve only posted on here a couple times, but this is the closest, I’ve ever gotten to first.

All of those candies are new to me except for the gummy bag. I haven’t really taken a good look at Halloween candy in the grocery store where I work yet, and I’ve already sold some. The Halloween section at the store is small (it shares space with the baking section), but managed to have a better selection of spooky goodies last year than the stores with shelves and shelves full.

I’m actually gonna save this article for tomorrow. So it seems like less time till the next. Sad? Maybe. But i lost my job last week and i currently don’t have much to do in the days haha.

Also, Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens

Am i missing out there?

I rated your video as awesome. Cause truth. And, that spider is a master of disguise. I was like did he forget to put it in the picture? It will bite your toes, from your carpet.

9th is close to first.  Also, Leperchaun and Maniac.

Posted by Wolfman @ 09/24/2007 11:43 PM EDT

The Leprechaun series as a whole is worth watching, but I think the first one’s a good place a start.  Obviously, being what it is means it’s a little tongue-in-cheek, but it’s still an actual horror movie with all the crap you’d want from an actual horror movie.  Plus, it’s fun to watch the Leprechaun and know that he’s really an Ewok.

Posted by Matt @ 09/24/2007 11:45 PM EDT

So, i sit here drinking my sour lemon drop dead jones soda, and i have to say that i love love love this countdown.  it gives me something to do while the fiancee plays PS2 games that are annoying to me.    i just cannot wait for halloween to happen yet, in the past few years it has lost the magic for me, just because i always have to work on halloween, but now that i am reading these blogs i am actually planning out costumes and all that fun stuff.  im thinking banana.

Posted by Leigha @ 09/24/2007 11:46 PM EDT

Is the sour cotton candy as sour as one of those Warheads? You know….the candy thats famous for its 10 seconds of extreme sourness then transforms into a sweet candy. I might want to pick some up to try it if it is.

Posted by Tim @ 09/24/2007 11:46 PM EDT

By george Matt you’ve done it again.
Now to plan a trip to the states so that I can actually purchase these tasty treats, try 2 and then put them in the clost with my Jones soda mini cans from last year’s Target trip. totally worth it.

Posted by ellaenchanted @ 09/24/2007 11:48 PM EDT

Amityville Horror.  I’ve never seen it but always wanted.  I think I’ve seen all the other ‘major’ horror movies bu that one.

Posted by Shuanfu @ 09/24/2007 11:52 PM EDT

A Nightmare on Elm Street. Always wanted to, but never got around to it. Also, the first Halloween movie. And the Rob Zombie remake.

Posted by AccidentalMartyr @ 09/24/2007 11:56 PM EDT

A-candy sounds really good

B-I have never seen The Exorcist, and want to, but maybe never will.

Posted by kb @ 09/24/2007 11:56 PM EDT

Sleep Away Camp (the original, I’ve seen the two sequals. Part 3 should seriously have won some kind of award for most awkward, uncomfortable “sex” sccene ever.). I’ve never managed to see it, but it’s on the NetFlix now.

I just watched Return to Horror High, a truly bizarre chunk of ’80’s cheese. I swear they originally had two different movies that they spliced together. It was goofy and fun over all, though.

Posted by LemonWitch @ 09/24/2007 11:57 PM EDT

Dang it, I lay off the refresh button for 5 minutes (I’ve always been more of a curser guy, just not down with the F5 just yet) and look what happens. Oh well, I missed my shot at firsties but maybe I’ll make lucky 13.

I’ve got a new reason to love Kit Kat now. The almighty Reeses has always held a special #1 place in my candy list, but Kit Kats definitely make it into the Top 5. I disagree a little though. I really dig the top design with the bats and moon more than the bottom one. The bottom one’s cool and all, but the top one…well, it’s got bats. And that’s just about all I need, really.

Skeleton Pops are the shit! Skeleton bodies with lollipop heads! Why didn’t this happen sooner??

As for horror movies, being a big ol’ horror buff, My Netflix list is full of stuff I want to catch up on. I was so jazzed to find today that they finally got Dr. Giggles. I missed that one and have never been able to rent it anywhere. As lame as this sounds, I really want to see Cursed, and don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I know it’s probably crap but it’s got werewolves and that’s always a good time and I’m completely, (and proabably creepily) obsessed with Christina Ricci. Maybe I’m just waiting till she makes her very last movie ever, and after I’ve seen them all and am starving for new Ricci stimulation, I’ll be able to say, “Wait! There’s one more, and it’s got werewolves!” Kind of like my Christina Ricci version of an emergency $20.

Posted by DJ D @ 09/24/2007 11:58 PM EDT

I’m sad that I haven’t seen more of the classic zombie films like the original Dawn of the Dead and I haven’t seen many of the F13 or Nightmare on Elm Streets.  But that shall be remedied soon enough!

And I love the dancing skeleton vid.  Tres cute. :P

Posted by Special K @ 09/25/2007 12:00 AM EDT

LemonWitch I’ve got all the Sleepaway Camps on my Netflix list too and can’t wait to finally get round to those. The trailers look hilarious.

AccidentalMartyr and Special K The both of you should really be ashamed of yourselves. Seriously. I want you to both go to your rooms and think about what you’ve done and I don’t want to see you again until you’re caught up on classic 80’s slashers. Come on folks, this is X-E Horror 101 stuff here. You know, if you’re just not willing to bring something to this….I don’t know…*throwing hands up in frustration*…..I just can’t work like this!

Posted by DJ D @ 09/25/2007 12:07 AM EDT

Don’t you just love Halloween?  By the way, it’s my birthday tomorrow, I will be the big 21.  I was pleased to bring in September 25th with a helping of X-Entertainment!  Thanks Matt.

i’d make that shirt and wear it proudly, i agree with the philosophy

Posted by Jess @ 09/25/2007 12:16 AM EDT

I always want to see horror movies, but I’m too scared to usually watch them. Except Nightmare on Elm Street. So pretty much all horror movies fall under that catagory for me…

Hey Matt, where did you find that awesome bag of indivudally wrapped peeps? My dad loves those…he’ll freak if I can find a bag!

Posted by Jill @ 09/25/2007 12:20 AM EDT

,Amityville Horror was the first horror movie i ever saw,i was very young, maybe six or so.Don’t know why my mum let me watch it…it scared the hell out of me (that dude tapping on the window, bbbrrr)and is the reason why to this day,i compulsively check that all windows and doors are locked a hundred times before going to bed at night.
(The next movie i saw was Poltergeist which made me terrified of all my toys.)
Have been screwed up ever since.

Long time listener, first time poster….

Hostel.  It freaks me out too much.  I don’t know if I can watch…..

Posted by Philman @ 09/25/2007 12:22 AM EDT

i was at the dollar tree this weekend and i noticed the halloween stuff up.  im really gunna see if they have the skeleton lollipops as i didnt pay too much attention of all the stuff they had.  Maybe i’ll pick up some other cheap candy to give away cause these r def not gunna be given to some greedy trick or treater.

Ive never seen Nightmare on Elm Street or n e Halloween ones.  I dont kno if this counts since it may be jus thriller.  But havnt seen any Hostel or Saw movies.

Punkinhead, or the original body snatchers.

Also the first night mare on elms street thats the only one i havent seen and I think the others are brilliant, Freddy also comes up with the most unique ways to kill his victims.

Posted by mjgrass @ 09/25/2007 12:28 AM EDT

I’ve never seen the original Little Shop of Horrors… Actually, I haven’t seen much at all in the way of Horror Movies. Still though, the candy looks awesome… Perhaps we’ll have a “Candy Theater” featuring the Halloween Peeps and Ghost Dots…

any one of those crazy Japanese horror films…

Thanks for posting the candy list…I have a friend with a Halloween birthday, and I’ve been trying to figure out what to get her (apart from Cool as Ice and some Batman gear). I think she would really appreciate some Skeleton Pops.

For horror movies, I really want to see Freddy vs. Jason, and, having just seen the not-a-remake Halloween, I really want to see the original. And a lot of others…I’m relatively new to the horror genre.

Posted by Anonymous @ 09/25/2007 12:40 AM EDT

By the way, those Skeleton Pops rock but after you eat the candy, you’re left with a headless skeleton toy.I wish he had a plastic head underneath so the kiddies would still love him after they’ve devoured his head.I hate to think of him being thrown in the bin rather than becoming an ornament.

Thanks to me actually needing to go on a different browser to actually post here (I’m normally on AOL, but I get 403 messages there, so I’m now typing on Internet Explorer). Also bad for me that the last time I checked there were 13 comments. Now there’s 32 or so.

Awesome article yet again, Matt! I’m not the kind that thinks you should rush greatness.

The theme? Well, I’ve never been into horror flicks, and you guys basically told me the entire plot of every horror movie here so many times that I don’t even need to watch them, but Friday the 13th Part III would be a good example. After I sat down with the rest of you guys riffing it, I loved it and I can’t believe I missed all that cheese.

As for one I haven’t seen yet? Like I said, I’m not a horror guy, but if we include Little Shop of Horrors (which I haven’t seen either), I’ll throw in Shaun of The Dead. I hear it’s so fantastic…but I haven’t actually seen it yet.

And *tiny voice* until a few months ago, I never saw Rocky Horror Picture Show from beginning to end (I’ve seen chunks like Time Warp, but not the whole thing). My girlfriend kept telling me it was great, and then she finally showed it to me. I think it’s great, and I know about the whole “Live Show” subculture, but I probably will never do it.

Posted by Invader Norbert @ 09/25/2007 12:42 AM EDT

Always wanted to see “Pumpkinhead”, but never made it all the way through. One of those movies people only claimed to have seen “bits and pieces” of, really.

BTW, Matt, I was checking out old parts of the site earlier, and came across that fifty dollar mystery box offer. Is that still valid?

Posted by Travie Yak @ 09/25/2007 12:44 AM EDT

Heh, I knew you were going to make it. No doubt.
I very much know what you mean about the doing of nothing. I have classes Monday and Tuesday nights and any time I spend doing something on Sunday besides being couch slime makes me crazy.
Movies I need to see? Dawn/Day of the Dead, Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser, the Dario Argento movies…there a lot, actually :D

Posted by squee4242 @ 09/25/2007 12:44 AM EDT

Hmmm.  I’m sort of a horror film buff (huge accomplishment, I know), so off-hand I can’t really think of any that I’ve been dying to see, but haven’t.  If I can think of any I will be sure to comment again.  So I guess I will just comment on the movies that others are mentioning.

The Amityville Horror:  The idea of this movie is scarier than the film itself.  Yes, I’ll admit that this movie did freak me out a little bit the first time I watched it, but I was around twelve.  The original doesn’t hold up well.  James Brolin and Margot Kidder can only do so much to save this one.  Overall I would say that it is a “must see” due to its classic status, but don’t expect too much.  Believe it or not… I actually recommend the first sequel much more than this.  Hey… I liked it!

Leprechaun:  Jennifer Aniston… pre-plastic surgery.  See it for that alone.  Also, it isn’t that bad.

Halloween:  The original of course.  Classic.  Watch it.

A Nightmare on Elm Street:  Classic.  Watch it.

Sleepaway Camp:  Hmmm.  A total rip-off of Friday the 13th, but worth watching just for the shocking last shot of the film.  This would be a good double-feature with The Crying Game.  The sequels?  Errr… they are low-budget horror.  Watch them while drinking with friends and all is good.

Dawn of the Dead:  While this could certainly appear to be dated by today’s standards, this one is a bona fide classic.  Watch it… and try and do it through your “view-the-world-through an-average-citizen-in-1978″ glasses.  Romero may have lost his touch over the years… but this is his masterpiece.

The Exorcist:  Perhaps the scariest film of all-time in my opinion.  Watch it alone, at midnight, with the lights out.  You may never be the same.

Posted by Magic Toy @ 09/25/2007 12:46 AM EDT

Not at the moment, but maybe again someday.

Pumpkinhead is a nice, drowsy, Sunday afternoon kind of movie, but I wouldn’t plan a party night around it.

Invader Norbert: You really, really need to see Little Shop.  It’s just about perfect and is a nice footnote to anyone who made a career of buying Venus Flytraps from every plant sale throughout elementary school.

Posted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 12:47 AM EDT

I can’t remember the name of the movie, but it was one of Peter Jackson’s first B-movie releases. I remember seeing some clips on the AMC Horror Movie countdown thing, where the guy kills a bunch of zombies with a lawnmower. I really am too lazy to google it.. Dead something.. ah hang on… Dead Alive, that’s it.

I can’t imagine it’s that good, but I keep hearing about it..

Posted by Cigar @ 09/25/2007 12:52 AM EDT

Cigar:  Yes, it was Dead Alive, and there is a reason you keep hearing about it.  It is that good.

It is a great movie to pair up with Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn.  Peter Jackson finally pulled it all together and made his first really good movie.  Sure I enjoyed Bad Taste somewhat, and Meet the Feebles was as good as its description (”Muppets on acid”), but Dead Alive was the movie that put him on the map as a director to watch.

Going on to direct the LotR movies was a bit unexpected though.  Back in ‘93 who would have thought that two of the biggest directors would be the guys who wrote the characters of “Lionel” and “Ash”?

On a side note… anyone else buying Halo 3 tomorrow?

Posted by Magic Toy @ 09/25/2007 12:59 AM EDT

I’m having FireFox issues and I sure hope this isn’t triple posting.

I almost bought some of the Peeps Ghosts today at Wal Mart, I haven’t seen the spiders, skulls, and bats.  That spider looks too awesome!

To answer the survey: House of 1000 Corpses.  I’ve seen bits and pieces, maybe 15 minutes worth, total.  I’ve always wanted to see it, just never gotten around to it.

I don’t want to over-stimulate you guys before you go to bed, but QVC just started their “Countdown to Christmas” about 50 minutes ago, it will run all day today until midnight eastern time.  I never buy anything from QVC but I love watching their Christmas programming.  Seeing their Christmas colors and Christmasy sets and listening to the music, I love it.

Getting in the Christmas spirit, but still having the excitement of Halloween and Thanksgiving to look forward to.

This is the best time of year.

I am ready for the reticuloendothelial system mainstay, and I am still waiting for my Audrey 2 storybook!

Posted by The Jar @ 09/25/2007 1:03 AM EDT

Candy looks alright this year. My favorite of the five definitely had to be the Peeps Spooky Friends, not because they look particularly good (I actually hate Peeps), but because the colors are so freakish. They almost look like they would glow under blacklight, and I’m strangely enthralled by that. I have to say, though, that my favorite Halloween candy of all time remains the York Peppermint Batty. Now THAT was an awesome holiday transformation of an already mind-blowing candy.

I’m also despairing over my continued inability to find Ghost Dots. I’ve looked at CVS, Kroger, Dollar General, Meijer, Wal-Mart, and Save-a-Lot in the past week and I haven’t seen one package. I’ve seen EVERYTHING but them, though. I hope they’re not just being test marketed in the northeast–I don’t want to be reduced to buying a box from some ebay store that’s jacked it up 1000% above retail.

And I’m not really a fan of the horror genre, so there’s nothing as of late that I’ve regretted not watching. Maybe Tursitas or Hostel, if you count gore as a sub-category of horror. I was brought up to understand special effects (apparently my parents thought I was especially susceptible to mixing fantasy and reality), so no movie I’ve ever seen has ever come close to truly scaring me because I’m always thinking “wow, that’s great CG” or puzzling over how a certain scene was constructed. I might make the one exception of Fern Gully, because Hexxus totally freaking frightened my three-year-old self.

Posted by Cordon Bleu @ 09/25/2007 1:07 AM EDT

Begotten. I’ve had the DVD for over a year, and have never even taken the shrink wrap off.  A buddy of mine gave it to me, and while I trust his judgment on horror flicks, it’s a little harder for me to talk my girlfriend into watching a grainy, atmospheric silent movie.

Posted by P@rick @ 09/25/2007 1:15 AM EDT

I have not seen any of these horror films:
The old Universal Monster Movies.
The only Hitchcock movie I’ve watched is The Birds.
The original King Kong
AmityVille Horror
Exorcist
Poltergeist
The original Hellraiser
Any Children of the Corn Movie
They Live
Pet Semetary
The Hitcher
The Fog
Pumpkinhead
Candyman
Leprechaun
Puppetmaster/ Demonic Toys (I’ve only seen the sci-fi movie that pit them against each other)
Phantasm
Re-Animator
House
Silent Night, Deadly Night
Black Christmas
Dr. Giggles

Posted by JLAJRC @ 09/25/2007 1:20 AM EDT

Gigli.

…Wait, sources tell me that Gigli was in fact not a horror. In that case, the Jason movies, especially the 3-D one. (totally not sucking up…)

F13 in 3D!  You must see it!  And thank you for the reminder of that awesome two-part megathread from last Friday the 13th.  We need to do that again and soon.

Posted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 1:27 AM EDT

Yeah, the megathread with multiple Friday the 13ths was great.  What about a Halloween repeat for late October?  I don’t have a TV schedule or anything, but you have to think that there will be multiple Myers’ slash-fests on at some point in time.

AMC perhaps?

Posted by Magic Toy @ 09/25/2007 1:37 AM EDT

Suspiria. Everyone tells me it’s really good, but somehow I have never actually gotten around to renting it.

I’ll pass it in the video store, maybe pick it up and read the blurbs on the back of the box, but then some stupid film I’ve already seen a dozen times will catch my eye and Suspiria will end up back on the shelf.

Posted by Doctor Who @ 09/25/2007 1:46 AM EDT

I sit here and I think of a movie to list that I haven’t seen (horror movie that is) that people would turn and go “HOW HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THAT” to me.

Maybe The Shining. The original? I’ve never seen that.

I’ve seen most others. Elm Street series, Exorcist series, Even all three Sleepaway Camps. And both The Grudge, The Ring and their Japanese counterparts. (I’m sorry, but I can’t watch The Grudge.. at all. I have terrible nightmares.. The Japanese version just cracked me up cuz it was kind of.. not even close to scary. Ringu was great though.)

Maybe Evil Dead 2?

Oh and IT’s only good if you keep in mind that it IS a tv movie from the 90s. And that you notice Seth Green’s in it. I saw that instead of reading the book (I was 12 and the book was a little too big..)

..This post is bigger than I expected. I’ll shut up now.

i was going to say dead alive as well, but it looks like someone beat me to it.  my favorite zombie film is actually a troma film, and its called redneck zombies.  it mixes my two most hated (and secretly loved) creatures: zombies and rednecks.  it is great, i dont even know if it is available on dvd, the only time i rented it, i was in 7th grade and it was a VHS.  if any of you can find it, i highly recommend it.

I know it’s sacrelig around here, but I still have never seen the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  Some day I’ll have time, money, and drive to see it, but not today.

Posted by Mad Cow @ 09/25/2007 2:10 AM EDT

First off, I just turned on the Chiller channel just in time to see Elvira’s glorious, swinging tassels.

Second…The Devil’s Rejects. I know, it’s not a classic, and it’s just another entry in the uber-gore, torture porn genre, but House of 1000 Corpses was so awesomely awfuwl, that I still want to see Devil’s Rejects. I’ve actually heard it’s way better than it’s predecessor, and since Zombie was allowed to make Halloween, I guess Rejects had to be decent at least.

I’ll get around to it some day, maybe before this 10/31.

And thnaks for finally putting up a new countdown entry, Matt. I’ve no idea how you work, sleep, and maintain this site, but I’m glad you do, even if it does kick your ass.

Happy birthday Steven!

My thoughts on some of the ones mentioned so far:
Leprechaun: Actually scared the shit out of me way back when. Realizing it’s just Willow/Wicket in there helped.
Amityville Horror: Magic T’s got it. Worth watching but nothing too terrifying.
Pumpkinhead: Another one that scared the crap out of me when I watched it on SciFi. Did they totally change up the mythology in the sequels?
Little Shop of Horrors: This is a classic, and anyone that hasn’t seen it is a sorry specimen indeed. There’s no reason to watch the b & w original unless you’re a big Jack Nicholson (sp?) fan, but the remake is, like, one of the greatest movies of all time.
Scream: Annoying because it launched the whole ironic horror thing, but it’s actually a decent little thriller.
Shaun of the Dead: It IS fantastic. Genuinely scary the first time through, and funnier every time afterwards.
The Shining: If you’re a King purist, the miniseries with Stephen Weber does a decent job of it. You can say what you will about the Kubrick version, it’s got some of the most iconic and freaky images ever. If I could only watch one horror movie forever, this might be it.

I was hoping we might do a synchronized DVD viewing for the next megathread, but we should start looking out for good weekend night cable airings. Though the Planet Terror DVD does come out in a few short weeks ;)
AMC’s showing Sister Act this Friday, which I was going to say wouldn’t really work, but actually might be brilliant now that I think about it.

Magic Toy

Dawn of the Dead (’78) is definitely amazing. Everything about that movie is perfect, from the effects, to the social commentary, to the music…I’m sure it was all edgy and relevant then, but now it’s pure, cheesy, gold.

Posted by Ken @ 09/25/2007 2:30 AM EDT

I used to post (can’t remember what name I used) back in the day… still love what you do!

I’m a huge horror fanatic, and have seen the vast majority, good and bad.

The one I’ve wanted to see, but have only managed to ever catch the first couple of minutes, is ‘Ichi the Killer.’

I much prefer the asian horror originals, as opposed to the dumbed down, Americanized versions of movies like Ringu and Ju-On.  Hell, I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch the US version of Dark Water… any good?  Or has my instinct been correct?

Oh, and also (I promise, this is it) Has anyone ever seen Milo? It’s a B slasher flick about a demon child in a yellow raincoat. It scared the shit out of my friend and I when we were in 7th grade, but even then I thought it was awesome, and named a flour sack in a yellow, infant-size raincoat Milo as an homage (it was a flour baby project for school that same year)

I try to see horror movies as often as I can, but I 99% of the time have to watch them by myself and don’t usually have the time. :( That being said, the ones that I would really like to see are:

The original Dawn of the Dead (I did see the remake and loved it though)

The rest of the “…of the Dead” movies including “Night of the Living…”

The F13 movies after the first one (already seen it)

Scream

The Exorcist (umm…*embarassed* I actually started watching this movie and got bored…although to be fair it was because of the long setup and the fact that I was way too tired)

The Evil Dead movies (I’ve got the ED1 DVD and Army of Darkness PVR’d, but I want to get ED2 and watch all three with some friends…if I can find any that’ll watch ‘em with me)

Also would like to see the rest of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the movie version of Little Shop of Horrors. Oooh, and Dead Alive. And anything with Robert Englund that I haven’t seen yet.

Okay, I’m just going to stop here.

Wait! Two more! Shriek if You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th and Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Terror

SHIT. I missed the last punctuation mark. Here: . :)

Posted by Frakkyfire @ 09/25/2007 2:58 AM EDT

Oh for God’s sakes, I didn’t get the whole title. I PROMISE this is my last post. This is the full title: Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D

Posted by Frakkyfire @ 09/25/2007 3:00 AM EDT

I have not seen Phantasm. How is that one?

The original Amityville Horror didn’t bother me much when I was a child, but a couple years ago I saw the remake and I was surprised that it actually creeped me out.

Someone mentioned Sky Captain. All I can say is I wouldn’t know how good that movie is because I fell asleep in the theater when I tried to watch it.

Posted by GloomyJack @ 09/25/2007 3:04 AM EDT

Frakkyfire,

I saw the first 20 minutes of Shriek if You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th on Comedy Cental the other day, before I had to change the channel. It was like the makers saw Scary Movie, then paid Uwe Boll to do a remake. The jokes were all really, really lame (even too lame for a parody of a parody), and it just wasn’t fun at all. But yeah, I’m sure somebody out there likes it, though I’d advise you to skip it.

Wow the cotton candy looks awesome, btw have you seen this candy paper stuff? its really weird, has a pen with this sugary goo in it with these little sheets stuff that resembles the edge of sugar wafers that are paper thin and you can write on with the pen. Weird stuff…

Posted by Cam @ 09/25/2007 3:46 AM EDT

I’ve seen both movies, but i’ve had an itch to watch The Addams Family, and Ernest Scared Stupid, but can’t find them anywhere.

Posted by James [XMrStayPuftX] @ 09/25/2007 4:02 AM EDT

Wow, those are some kick ass candies, and I wish they were all vegan - especially the kitkats. I’m a huge fan of the vampire. That cotton candy is fascinating, too. It reminds me of fiber fill.

My movie pick is probably The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I have it on DVD. Infact, I’m pretty sure I got it the week it came out, but I just never got around to watching it.

Posted by Ryane @ 09/25/2007 4:32 AM EDT

I like the T-shirt idea.  I’m thinking a series of XE shirts.

“I don’t want to think about chicken while I’m eating Doritos”

You know you want one.

I haven’t seen Saw.  That sentence hurts my head.

I used to watch a lot of Troma movies (Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke ‘em High, etc).  They’ve got a ton of goofy horror movies I would like to see. Any recommendations?

I blame Gilbert Godfreid for my taste in movies.  Hell comes to Frogtown anybody?

Posted by Fungusmungus @ 09/25/2007 4:40 AM EDT

I have never seen SAW or THE RING which seem to have been required watching in the early stages of the millenia.

Seen all the F13s, HALLOWEENS, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREETS, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRES (except the prequel and the next generation)

Speaking of crap: JAWS IV is my NETFLIX for the week. Never seen it all the way through. Ready for the crapfest!

Posted by The Manimal @ 09/25/2007 5:34 AM EDT

Horror:
- Friday the 13th
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre
- Halloween

Non-horror:
- Pulp Fiction
- Boondock Saints
- Fight Club

My mom was adamant about not letting us see rated R films until we were 17. I’m 20 now, so I chalk it up to simply not getting around to it, but rest assured they’re on my Netflix as we speak.

Enjoying my third bowl of Count Chocula of the 2007 Halloween season… only 23 more boxes to go!

DJ D: In my defense, I’ve seen at least the originals of both, if not subsequent F13s and Nightmare on Elm Streets, but I saw them when I was probably no more than 4 to 6 years old and I don’t remember them.  I did manage to catch the Johnny-Depp-being-sucked-into-the-bed scene on last year’s MonsterFest–can I have some cool points back for that?

Invader Norbert: Shaun of the Dead… my second favorite movie of all time (just behind the Nightmare before Christmas).  You absolutely HAVE to see it.  I think everyone should.  Even if you don’t appreciate British humor, there are some visuals you’ll enjoy.  Also, I think everyone should experience a live Rocky Horror at least once in their lives.  I’ve been to two (the second only because my fiance was playing Rocky…) and there’s some kind of pure delight in throwing buttered toast at complete strangers that just can’t be found anywhere else on earth. :P

I haven’t seen the original Amityville Horror, but I didn’t like the new one either, mostly because I cannot imaging Ryan Reynolds ever being evil.  He seems like such a happy guy.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was bad.  Just really, really bad.  At the end I was going, “Wait… I’m confused, but I don’t want to watch it again to figure it out.  Oh, well,” and then tossed it over my shoulder into the trash.

You guys keep going, I’m taking notes.

And to build on Fungusmungus’s idea, Matt that wouldn’t be a bad way to raise money for the site!  I’d buy one.  Or twelve.

Now why aren’t any stores open at 6:25 am… I need Halloween Kit Kats!  But I wish they came in an orange variety…

Man, you’ve got to review Blue Moon’s Harvest Moon Ale. It’s pumpkin flavored. PUMPKIN FUCKIN’ FLAVORED. I know your aversion to pumpkin…but this is fuckin’ PUMPKIN FLAVORED ALE! I’m doing a review of it and going to give you a shout-out.. Yeah…I said shout-out.

Posted by Joe @ 09/25/2007 7:36 AM EDT

Wow, I don’t know if it is sad but I think I have seen all the horror movies people have listed above.

Rayne: The Exorcism of Emily Rose is worth watching. I don’t know why people trashed it when it came out. I thought it was a smart horror movie that really had some creepy parts.

I always wanted to see Devil’s Backbone. It’s a Spanish horror flick but it looks very disturbing. I am saving it for our Halloween party.

You guys should keep an eye out for Bravo channels 100 Scariest films. It’s a quick review and countdown of all the horror movies you wanted to see but never got a chance to.
Or pop by TheFleshFarm dot com. He does a good job with clips and trailers. Some of it is NSFW so be careful.

Aww. :( Well, if I remember, I’ll give it a try on my vacation next week, anyhow.

I’m wrapping up Sense & Sensibility then heading to bed. First time I’ve ever seen this and I love it. Kate Winslet should’ve totally went for Alan Rickman to begin with. *sigh* I know I would’ve! Yeah I know, I know… I’ll take my chick flick somewhere else. :)

Oh, well yay for a thumbs up. :D That makes me have more confidence in it. The fact that it was somewhat based on a true story was what got me wanting to see it in the first place, so, I have faith it can’t be too bad.

Sorry I got sucked into the movie halfway through my post. I shoulda refreshed.

Posted by Ryane @ 09/25/2007 8:12 AM EDT

How great is The Monsters HD channel on IO digital cable (I believe Directv carries it as well)?  The old, classic horror movies look terrific.

Posted by KJX @ 09/25/2007 8:18 AM EDT

I liked Sense and Sensibility and even read the book first before seeing the movie, so don’t feel bad. I don’t consider it a chick flick. ;)

Posted by Bill @ 09/25/2007 8:21 AM EDT

Where I’m from, Dead Alive is known as Brain Dead and it is absolutely one of my favourite movies ever, so everyone who mentioned it earlier: definately definately a must see, killing zombies with lawn mowers is the coolest. After watching the dinner scene my college friends wouldn’t touch any custard for weeks!!

I used to love watching Class of Nuke’m High, so I hired out the sequel. Don’t. Just don’t.

Umm…I’m not sure what I’m itching to watch at the moment. I saw something called Zombie Honeymoon when I was last at the rental place, so has anyone seen it?

Posted by Jasmine @ 09/25/2007 8:24 AM EDT

KJX - I only wish I had such a channel. :( I am still in the archaic times of regular cable. No digital for me. I do have quite the collection of old B&W horror flicks on DVD though.

Bill - You even read the book? :o You’re my Favorite Male of the Day! I was just sitting here thinking, “Gee, I should get this book…” I’ll have to put it on my list. ;)

Ok, time for bed!

Posted by Ryane @ 09/25/2007 8:30 AM EDT

Damn, if you had asked me yesterday morning I would have said “Hellraiser”; I’ve always heard how cool it was, but never got around to seeing it.  Until yesterday afternoon when I picked up the first two DVDs on sale, and watched them back-to-back last night!  Horrah for Pinhead!

Other than that, the whole “… Of The Dead” series has escaped me, I’m not a huge zombie fan, so I’ve never spent the time to watch.  Am I really missing out on much???

I liked Exorcism of Emily Rose, it was just very subtle.  Unlike, say Nightmare 1, and the Johnny Depp Blood Fountain.  :)

I got all tingly reading that other people here had seen the Sleepaway Camp series (I picked up the box set, that has some of the film that was supposed to become #4), but was really surprised that anyone on here saw “Return to Horror High”.  I can’t recommend it enough, even though it doesn’t make sense at points, and it does seem like it was two movies spliced together…

Posted by Dr Sketch @ 09/25/2007 8:53 AM EDT

Sorry for the double post.  Jasmine, take your hands off of Zombie Honeymoon.  Turn around, walk away, and try never to think of it again.  I bought it on sale ($3.50) and STILL think it was a waste of money.  Whatever you’re envisioning in your head is way better than the actual movie.

Another one to warn you all about is Zombies Gone Wild.  I’d like to find the people responsible for this and punish them for a long, long time.

Posted by Dr Sketch @ 09/25/2007 8:56 AM EDT

Ragetreb, go and rent all of those movies now! or watch all three on halloween and prepare yourself for the three greatest horror flics ever.

Same for you manimal. I love all the Saws.

slightly off topic- has anyone seen the Tales from the Crypt where Tim Curry plays three seperate characters including 2 women? Highly reccomended off the season 5 box set.

Posted by DrWorm @ 09/25/2007 9:06 AM EDT

Ahh, okay. I will avoid it then. Why do movies with “zombie” in the title tend to suck, and not in a good way? I hired out Zombie High once, and the ending was okay but everything before it was so bad.

Zombies Gone Wild sounds terrible…I’m imagining zombies getting their boobs out and doing beer bongs…

Posted by Jasmine @ 09/25/2007 9:06 AM EDT

How about horror movies you never wanted to see but were forced to watch because you were 13 and all of your friends were watching it at a sleepover? I have a nice long list of those…beginning with Pet Cemetary!

Posted by Jessica Marie @ 09/25/2007 9:16 AM EDT

For some reason I’ve never seen the original Shining all the way through, but I’ve seen the end on TV… =(  I still plan on watching it though, hopefully soon.  Other than that, I think I’ve seen most of the Big ones.  Like I said last night, that “Behind the Mask” movie is great for people who like Slashers.

Byrdo-  I haven’t seen the remake, but the original Wickerman is a joke.  Really, my friends and I rented it once and laughed all the way through.  We were scratching our heads as to what the fuss was about.

Posted by Joker @ 09/25/2007 9:18 AM EDT

I feel that I’m a lame-ass loser for never having seen ‘Psycho’.

Posted by Brilliantpants @ 09/25/2007 9:22 AM EDT

Never seen Psycho Either.  Behind the mask also high on my list. I also need to rent beyond reanimator, day of the dead, and savini’s night of the living dead remake.

Excellent article Matt, will have to keep an eye out for some of those Peeps!

As for movies I cant Recommend the original Halloween enough, it is the Grand-daddy of Slasher flix..still holds up today.

Im a pretty big horror fan, the only newer movie Ive been meaning to watch but haven’t gotten around to is the Black Xmas remake..Im sure it totally sux!

Posted by Gregor! @ 09/25/2007 9:47 AM EDT

The original Trilogy of Terror- I’ve always wanted to see the original evil Tiki Doll story because I’ve heard it’s scary.  I’ve seen the sequel.

Amityville Horror
Exorcist
Hellraiser
Pumpkinhead
Leprechaun
They Live
The Fog
Hitcher
Silent Night, Deadly Night
The Universal Monster movies
The only Hitchcock movie I’ve seen is The Birds.

Here’s some more.

Ghoulies (I’ve seen the three sequels, though)
Critters
Phantasm
Pet Semetary
The original King Kong
Cujo
Carrie
I’ve only seen two Vincent Price movies (Edward Scissorhands and the DR. Phibes)
Dr. Giggles
When a Stranger Calls
Never seen an ED Wood movie.  But I’ve seen the awesome Johnny Depp biopic.

Posted by JLAJRC @ 09/25/2007 10:16 AM EDT

Everyone needs to purchase the Alfred Hitchcock -The Masterpiece Collection dvds.  Even if you prefer gorier horror movies, you can’t call yourself a horror movie aficionado and not own most of the movies in this set.

Posted by KJX @ 09/25/2007 10:17 AM EDT

Blair Witch and Psycho are both similar in that they’re frankly kind of slow and it’s not necessarily easy to see what all the fuss is about. I’d say you should see Psycho just for historical value but to be honest if you’re not into older movies it’s skippable. Heretic, I know.
I’ve never seen Saw, or Hostel, or any of the torture porn ones but I’ve never had any interest either. Though my distaste for Eli Roth has decreased with each viewing of Death Proof so I’d like to check out Cabin Fever at least.

Posted by squee4242 @ 09/25/2007 10:44 AM EDT

Far far too many, even limiting the genre to horror.

– All of the “Saw” installments
– Boogeyman
– Dark Water
– Ringu (saw “Ring” 1 and 2 though)
– Hostel
– House of a Thousand Corpses
– Ghoulies
– Gremlins
– Exorcist
– Hellraiser
– Leprechaun
– The Reanimator (which is too bad cause I love H.P. Lovecraft)

None of my friends want to see them with me ’cause they’re wimps.  And I’m too much of a wimp to see them myself.

I guess the only horror flick I haven’t seen that I want to see (that I can think of) is Phantasm.  I think I saw part of this a long time ago, but never all the way through.  Not sure why.

A couple of comments on other movies:

Suspiria - Definitely worth checking out.  As is his first entry in the Masters Of Horror series, Jenifer, which is one of the best horror movies of the last 5 years easy.

The Devil’s Rejects - I liked House Of 1000 Corpses, but I loved The Devil’s Rejects.  Just crazy, homicidal anarchy.

Dark Water - Didn’t really like the Japanese version and absolutely hated the American version.  What a waste of Jennifer Connelly.

A couple of other must sees:

May - Underrated weirdness.  Great movie.

High Tension - I actually pulled out a clump of my hair the first time I saw this.  Fucking scary.  Stupid, stupid, twist ending, though.

Shaun of the Dead… my second favorite movie of all time (just behind the Nightmare before Christmas).  You absolutely HAVE to see it.  I think everyone should.  Even if you don’t appreciate British humor, there are some visuals you’ll enjoy.

Oh believe me, I am an absolute fan of British Humour with most of my friends’ only exposure is Monty Python & The Holy Grail (which to me is only the tip of the Monty Python Iceberg). Hell, I have the complete DVD set of The Flying Circus (the original 14 dvd box set…before they shrank the cases and added 2 more discs not two years after I got it. I’m still pissed about that). I just never saw Shaun of The Dead, but I want to (and I’ve been meaning to see Hot Fuzz too. I really want to see that one.)

Speaking of some other posts, most of my exposure (and probable disinterest) in horror flicks was by being forced to watch them at sleepovers. This includes Jaws, Scream, and the remake of House on Haunted Hill (which was terrible).

I second or third Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I’ve been meaning to watch it for years but it just doesn’t happen.

Oh and Trilogy of Terror was pretty disappointing. The only remotely decent part is the evil doll part but even that wasn’t all that scary somehow.

Yeah I was gonna say…that’s a serious waste of an open slot for a horror marathon.  I’d feel almost challenged to come up with a worse list.

Posted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 12:05 PM EDT

It’s not easy to see what the fuss for Psycho is about?!  Along with the original Halloween, it DEFINED the modern-day horror/suspense flick.  It was the predecessor for all the movies in this genre released in subsequent decades.  It’s actually a very deep movie, unlike Hollywood today which seems to think the bloodier a film is the scarier it is.  Psycho is studied in film classes to this day because every scene was set up to have some significance.

Posted by Pulley @ 09/25/2007 12:22 PM EDT

I would go with AMC Monsterfest all the way. Every year it gets better.

Posted by Bill @ 09/25/2007 12:27 PM EDT

Squee4242,

I’d avoid Cabin Fever if I were you. It wasn’t really scary, and I felt it tried too hard to be campy. Plus, it has that shithead from boy meets world as its protagonist. There’s a scene where he’s trying to do the sex with some girl, and he actually has his finger in a rotting flesh wound in her thigh…It’s pretty bad. Oh, and then she shaves her skin off. That sounds like a case for, but trust me, it’s not remotely worthwhile.

Posted by Ken @ 09/25/2007 12:58 PM EDT

Ah, Ken, you underestimate my love of Boy Meets World. That sounds pretty awful though.
Pulley, I think Psycho is a great movie and I’m in total agreement with you about it’s significance. I’m just saying that if you’ve never seen the movie and only know it through pop culture, you might just find it hard to see why you’re supposed to care about some secretary and her embezzlement. I don’t want to go as far as to say that if you’re the type to appreciate it for it’s significance you’d have already seen it, but I think it’s definitely required watching if you consider yourself a film buff, horror or otherwise. And here is where I admit I have a big list of Hitchcock I need to see, like Rear Window, The Birds, Vertigo…basically anything that isn’t  Psycho, in fact ;)
JLAJRC, if you loved the Ed Wood biopic, Glen or Glenda? is definitely the one to watch.
What an awful lineup that Fest has. There are like, 4 decent movies there.

Posted by squee4242 @ 09/25/2007 1:26 PM EDT

I must have the spider peeps!  I’ve never seen the spiders, skulls, or bats, but I did almost buy some ghosts yesterday at wal mart.

To answer the survey: House of 1000 Corpses.  I’ve seen enough bits and pieces to maybe total 15 minutes worth of the movie.  It’s one I’ve always wanted to see, but just never got around to doing so.

I tried to post this last night, but I didn’t want to over-stimulate anybody before they went to bed, but QVC started their Christmas programming at midnight (Eastern time) last night.  They’re only doing 24 straights hours of Christmas programming for now, it’s their 3 month countdown to Christmas.  I stayed up until 2:30 AM watching Santa’s Toy Shop when my alarm goes off at 6.

I can’t help it, I love the music, the sets, the crap they sell (even though I’ve never purchased anything from them) and I absolutely love listening to people calling in.  It’s always old ladies that sound like they’d be from my family.  Like last night, some old lady ordered a snowman or snowglobe ornament or some crap, anywho she was talking about how her and her granddaughter just absolutely love snowmen and the host asked “So what do you and your granddaugter like about snowmen?” and the old lady replies “I don’t know……  [3 second silence] … we just like snow”.

Classic.

Posted by fistpittingnork @ 09/25/2007 2:15 PM EDT

Ryane: Just because I say it’s bad doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some redeeming qualities.  I’ll readily admit that the barn scene was intriguing.  You’ll see what I mean when you watch it.  And that girl is quite… um… freakishly animated.

Joker: the Wicker Man remake is a joke, too.  I fell asleep and lost a little respect for Nicolas Cage’s acting abilities.

Brilliantpants: You have to see Psycho.  It is a classic and you’re missing out not having seen the famous shower scene.  It was revolutionary in its time.  After you watch it, it’s interesting to read how the shower scene was done and what the audience’s reaction was.  Another Hitchcock movie I would highly recommend, not a horror movie but instead a suspense thriller, is North By Northwest.  Pulley: I’m proud to say that I fell in love with Hitchcock’s work through a high school film class. :)

I loved Blair Witch, I don’t care what anyone says.  I also loved that the first time my best friend and I watched it, the lights went out and the house was hit by 130 mph winds right after a very shocking part of the film.  We were hiding in the closet, scared shitless.  Good times, good times.

Posted by Special K @ 09/25/2007 2:32 PM EDT

I really liked the original Blair Witch.  Watched it alone in a dark room on a stormy night, and was kind of freaked by the end.  The first half is enjoyable on a “I’d love to go on a random trip like that” level, and the last half is nice and spooky.

The sequel is an unbelievable pile of shit, but somehow, also a fun movie.

Posted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 3:18 PM EDT

I hate horror movies (I am probably the only one on here to say that), but I would have to say Shaun of the Dead. I love British humor and the boyfriend has seen it a dozen times, I just have never sat down to watch the whole thing. I also want to see Army of Darkness, for some reason that is the only one of the series I haven’t seen.

Posted by Alyssa @ 09/25/2007 3:38 PM EDT

I’ve also never seen Blair Witch, but wanted too.

I just read of a DVD review of the first “Return of the Living Dead” film, and now I want to see it.

Posted by JLAJRC @ 09/25/2007 3:39 PM EDT

As much as I love horror movies, I’ve missed out on a lot of them. I’m only 18, so most of the classic slasher movies were before my time, and scrounging up the money to buy DVD box sets is difficult. As for more recent movies, I have no steady mode of transportation to a theater. When I lived at home I had to deal with my mom’s easily-scaredness and my dad’s distaste for violence in general. It would be easier to list the ones I have seen. Just assume that I want to see any that I haven’t.

I have only seen the first Nightmare on Elm Street, the first 5 Friday the 13ths, plus Freddy vs Jason. I have seen It and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I love scary clowns. As for the more recent/less classic ones, I’ve seen 1408, The Ring, Signs, and One Missed Call. I saw the most recent Halloween a few weeks ago.

I also saw Dead Silence. It was boring, and that’s coming from someone who is genuinely afraid of ventriloquist dummies.

Rear Window is my favorite Hitchcock film.  Shot for shot, there may not be a better movie.  Suspense-wise, Vertigo and North by Northwest are close seconds.

I have fondish memories of Blair Witch as the last R-rated movie I had trouble getting into. It scared the hell out of us and I was into it at the time (I think I have one of the companion books somewhere) but it doesn’t hold up to repeated viewing. But it could just be the motion sick-inducing camera work.
BTW did anybody catch the Psycho gag on The Daily Show last night?

I’ve never seen “Last House on the left” or the original “Hills have eyes”. I’ve been meaning to forever and have seen the remake of Hills , just wondering if the original is worth it. Oh and Zombi by Dario Argento either which is sad because I love zombie movies.

Posted by Dan H @ 09/25/2007 4:49 PM EDT

I’ve tried watching the original Hills Have Eyes, but the gods conspired against me.
- I rented it from Netflix and the disc they sent me had a crack that ran from one edge to the center hole. I sent it back and flagged it as damaged.
- I got a new disc from Netflix and managed to get twenty minutes into the movie before a disc read error stopped the show. I took the disc out and it looked like someone used steel wool to clean the bottom. I sent it back and flagged it as damaged.
- Netflix sent me a new disc. It was the same one they sent me the first time, with the crack.
- I gave up on Netflix and bought the disc from Barnes and Noble. I put in my brand new movie and got a disc read error. It wouldn’t work in any of my players.
I sent it back for a refund and have resigned myself to never seeing that movie.

Dr Sketch, not only did I see Return to Horror High, I deliberately set out to see it by NetFlixing it. :) I heard it was hilariously incomprehensible, and I was not disappointed. ;) I think the best part is when Stephen pulls off the mask and yells “Kastleman! You honky!” Both were white. Glorious.

I’ve never seen the original version of Dark Water completely; I saw the first half but had to go to class and never had an opportunity to finish. So I watched the remake not too long ago, and I don’t get the hatred this movie received. I think that it was a mistake to bill it as a horror; it’s really more of a drama with horror elements in it. I loved the relationship between mother and daughter, and the last fifteen minutes of that movie made me cry like I’d been beat. It was very sweet and beautiful, I thought. But that’s just my uninformed two cents. :)

Posted by LemonWitch @ 09/25/2007 5:08 PM EDT

I’m not really a horror fan, so I can’t think of any that I “need” to see. I do recommend Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, more because they’re funny than scary. (Somehow I ended up not liking Army of Darkness as much.)

I love The Hitcher. It’s not exactly scary, but it’s suspenseful and kind of twisted. I don’t own it but I need to.

There’s also Vampire’s Kiss, a Nicholas Cage movie. It’s not really a horror film, but it’s hilarious and would make a great review for the Halloween Countdown (hint hint, Matt! I bet you’d like it, if you haven’t already seen it). I’m not sure which is better, the movie or the DVD commentary.

(sorry if this gets posted more than once. My internet connection’s been on the fritz.)

PS - Apparently there was a recent remake of The Hitcher. I haven’t seen it; I was referring to the 1986 version.

Labyrinth. I think David Bowie in a codpiece is horror enough.

A lot of people forget that Leigh’s character was an embezzler, getting away with her ill-gotten loot. Until Norman and “Mother” got to her, of course.

Dan H: While I haven’t seen the first Zombi, I did recently pick up Zombi3 (local Blockbuster sells used movies 4/$20, so I get lots of cheap movies).  I hope Zombi and Zombi2 (if there was one) were better than the third one.  It was a complete, incomprehensible piece of shite.
LemonWitch: I haven’t seen the original Dark Water yet, but I was sadly disappointed by the remake (again, Blockbuster special).  It was billed (on the DVD cover) as being the latest horror movie from the creators of Ringu, so I was expecting some crazy horror.  I agree, they should have billed it as a thriller instead, or maybe even a drama due to the “is she crazy/isn’t she crazy” theme.  It was a beautiful ending though…
Bluejay: Great timing, I just finished (as in, ten minutes ago) the remake of The Hitcher.  Crazy movie, definitely worth the time to watch it.  Something about a killer who doesn’t really have a motivation beyond “because I was bored” gives me the jibblies every time.  The fact that he killed just because he could makes him nightmare fodder for sure!  :)

Posted by Dr Sketch @ 09/25/2007 6:03 PM EDT

Dan — Nosferatu has two or three great moments, the exact same two or three clips you see in documentaries all the time, but I’ve never made it all the way through in one sitting without falling asleep. The two silent horror films that really creep me out are “The Golem” and Jean Epstein’s “Fall of the House of Usher”.

I think Suspiria is the best supernatural horror film made in the past thirty years. It uses grating music and oversaturated Technicolor to pull you into its nightmare fairy tale. It predates the slasher genre and is equal parts Arthouse and Horror, though, so if gorgeous cinematography and dream-logic aren’t your thing, you might get a little pissed. You can watch one of its many infamous scenes here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6zJGUUiG0c.

The Shining is a great epic film. I’ve watched it many times, but I’ve never found it the slightest bit frightening. Not even spooky.

I love Romero’s Zombie movies. They’re great satire. But Night of the Living Dead is the only one that’s outright terrifying. See the THX remastered version if you haven’t! The only other Zombie movie I liked was Fulci’s “Zombie,” and that was more because the scenery was pretty.

I’ve never seen “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.” I tried to get it from Netflix, but it’s gone out of print. And I want to see “The Vault of Horror.”

Posted by Phen @ 09/25/2007 6:20 PM EDT

God, there are a good number of horror movies I want to see, but I just never get around to it.  :(  I’m really hoping to catch some good stuff on Monsterfest this year.  I missed all the good stuff last time.

Anyway, the highest on my list is probably The Exorcist.  I saw part of it on TV a long, long time ago, but my mom made me stop watching it and it was edited to all hell anyway.  I also want to see Psycho and Rosemary’s Baby.

check out the original for sure.  The remake is all about the surprise, shock n’ gore but in terms of substance I thought it was lacking.

/shock n’ gore sounds like a delicious candy treat
//I even made up a jingle for it!
///”There is nothing in this world that I love more, than chocolatey, nougatey Shock N’ Gore”

I’ll have to check out The Hitcher. I’ve seen bits and pieces of the original but never the whole thing.

Posted by Dan H @ 09/25/2007 6:58 PM EDT

IFC is a great channel for when they show horror films.  I’ve seen Halloween, Evil Dead, Hills Have Eyes, Dead Alive, and the TCM on it.

Speaking of the Hills Have Eyes, that is one of the few films where I think the remake is better than the original. The villains in the first film are basically a bunch of bald guys.  They look like the ones you see in the old-school pro wrestling.  The film is also boring.  The mutants in the remake look like monsters, and the kills are better.

Totally off-topic, but a head’s up that Monopoly starts at McDonald’s on October 2 (got an e-mail about it last night).

Yup, fall is officially here.

Okay,

having at one time worked at Blockbuster,I got free rentals and  we had a sweeet horror section.

Everyone has to see Happy Birthday to Me
it stars Melissa sue Anderson from little house on the prarie, as this teen who has a serious brain injury then wakes up and tries to kill her friends in really gross ways…like the one guy getting a shish kabob through his eye and skull…

The other I can’t think of the name, but its about a killer baby. Like it busts out of the moms stomach and it kills the doctors and nurses in the delivery room, and only stays normal for the mom, and tries to kill everyone else.  My mom saw it when she was pregnant with me, and the people in the movie had the same last name as we did…so she freaked.

Posted by mandy_undead_Reeves @ 09/25/2007 7:34 PM EDT

I’ve heard about Happy Birthday to Me but didn’t know waht it was about exactly. I’ll have to see if I can track down a copy, if nothing else to see Mary from Little House shish kabob someone.

“976-EVIL.”

Robert Englund (Freddy!) directed this flick about about people who turn into Satanic killers by dialing a phone number.

I used to beg my mom to rent “976-EVIL” every time we went to the video store. The cover art intrigued me because it featured “Evil Ed” Thompson from “Fright Night.”

Alas, mom thought it was too violent for a 10 year old girl, so I was forced to rent “The Goonies” again and again.

An interesting side note, “Evil Ed” Thompson (aka Stephen Geoffreys) is now an accomplished gay-porn actor. Some of his movies include “Cock Pit,” “Butt Blazer” and “Uncut Glory.”

No wonder my mom wouldn’t let me rent that damn video!

Looks like even Halloween isn’t immune to controversy. A store in Louisiana has taken down a hanging corpse decoration because people thought it was racist.

Have to agree with everyone’s assesments about Shaun of the Dead - awesome movie.  My wife and I both now have the same reaction whenever we watch a true zombie movie now.  I would also recommend Slither as a good follow up to Shaun of the Dead.

As for movies I haven’t seen yet - is Wolf Creek any good?

Posted by jjwspider @ 09/25/2007 8:59 PM EDT

Yes, Slither is a GREAT one!  I had a lot of fun watching that last Halloween–

Posted by Joker @ 09/25/2007 9:28 PM EDT

Embarrassingly, The Exorcist. I’ve never seen it half way through; watched about 10 minutes on Monsterfest and it put me to sleep. Some day…

I have a Slither poster in my room, but I haven’t seen that, either. Not even material goods and the bashing of Halloween can motivate me enough to order that shit. It’s too obscure to get at Blockbuster.

I’ve also never seen Halloween 6 ALL the way through; never seen the last 10 minutes which is apparently the most epic. Wow, I feel like a total pussy right now. I’m going to go cry.

Posted by Cotter @ 09/25/2007 9:35 PM EDT

Come to think of it, I do want to see the rob zombie Halloween remake. Maybe when it hits DVD.

On, and can I just mention I’m posting from my new iPod Touch?

Posted by Cameron T. @ 09/25/2007 10:00 PM EDT

Wow, I’ve just read up on all the comments from last night and I’ve got so much to say I actually had to jot down notes as I went…Ok, off to it:

squee4242 Punkinhead (yeah, as far as I’m concerned that’s the way it should be spelled) did change somewhat later in the series. Later on, Ed Hurley’s body was used to actually bring Punkinhead to life, and Punky seemed to able to get around a lot better. Thanks to some dodogy cgi, he was climbing buildings and jumping all over the place.

–As far as Romero goes, I think he’s a legend. I personally hated the Dawn of the Dead remake, mostly for the presence of too many big names and one thing that as far as I’m concerned is the most tragic and ridiculous thing to happen to horror in the last 10 years–RUNNING ZOMBIES. Romero has publicly expressed his disgust for them and I agree. Running zombies are lamer than vampires without fangs. That being said, of course I have great love for the original NotLD, but my favorite of the series has always been Day of the Dead (the one the seems to get the least amount of attention). Tom Savini was at the height of his career there and it’s one of the most realistically gory movies I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, there’s a remake in the works with Nick Cannon and Tera Reid that involve zombies that run and jump out of windows or some such nonsense. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Raechel Yeah, I agree, most American remakes of the Asian movies leave a lot to be desired. One of the creepiest movies I’ve ever seen is The Eye, and it’s being remade with Jessica Alba in the lead. Aside from the obvious eye candy (bad pun intended), I’m sure it’ll be a giant groan.

Special K Oh, all right. Cool points are restored. But you’ve got some catching up to do, young lady.

T-Shirts–name the place and price and I’m there. I think we should all pitch ideas and let Matt choose his faves. It could be our secret code. We could declare a “Wear Your X-E Shirt Day” and whenever you see someone wearing one it could be kind of like a Fight Club thing. You just pass each other and mutter things in code like, “ninja turtle pudding pies”, or “microbone”.

Bill I’ll join you in defending Emily Rose. I kind of dug it. And you should definetly check out The Devil’s Backbone. It’s good stuff, and a little unsettling.

–One of my top faves from the 80’s that never gets old is Fright Night. Anyone who’s too young to have exprienced it should check it out asap. You really missed out on that one. Too bad Evil Ed turned into a strung out, gay porn star, but I read on the Fango site not too long that he’s making a new movie now called Sick Girl that’s supposed to be his return to mainstream horror–not to be confused with the recent “Masters of Horror” movie of the same name…..”Oh, you’re so COOL Brewster!”

Jessica Marie Sorry, butI gotta disagree. I loved Pet Semetary.

MandiLast House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave are 2 of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen, especially I Spit on Your Grave. You should make a night of it, and watch both back to back. Then take a shower. Hostel ain’t got nothing on that shit.

Chris Martin May was really great, and very underrated. I loved High Tension until the twist. Well, I kinda dug the twist too, but it was completely illogical. I’ll try to be vague here so as not to spoil anything for anybody, but the whole car chase scene basically made the twist impossible. There’s no way it could have happened. Otherwise, a great, brutal movie.

Cameron T, dont bother seeing the Halloween reamke. It sucks.

It spends way too much time on myers childhood, which was turned from eerily normal in the original movie to trailer trash in this film.

There is no exposition, the charachters are set up to die literally a few minutes after you meet them.

Loomis who seemed to be strong, but slightly insane from the fact that no one was listening to him, comes off weak and innefectual.

ANd mIchael goes from soulless killer in the body of a normal man, to a human behemaouth.

Ryane, right there with you on Kate being kind of dumb and not seeing the hotness where it was to begin with (Alan Rickman that is).

I realized I’ve never seen Rosemary’s Baby either..

Anyone else seen Canibal Holocaust?

Its so bad that it is actually banned in 60 countires. The director was brought to court becuase the death scenes were so concincing that it was actually believed that the actors were killed.

I saw it and I gotta say. It was pretty damn bad. It was the only time iv ever seen a man have his penis chopped off and eaten on screen.

New Countdown might not be till morning.  Sorry, I worked long, hard and late today.  I’ve lost my smile.  The good news is, no commuting for the rest of the week. :) :) :)

I have to admit that I don’t believe I’ve ever even heard of Cannibal Holocaust until Chris’s comment.  Just looked it up…wow.  Sounds like the kind of thing I need to see once, even if I know I’ll wish I hadn’t.

And yeah, I didn’t like the Halloween remake, either.  That’s pretty much why I didn’t bother posting any blogs about it after its debut.  I didn’t expect to love it, but I hated it a lot more than I thought I would.  Just seemed utterly and totally pointless, and not in a “mindless fun” way or even a “good sleepy horror movie” way.

Posted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 10:51 PM EDT

Yeah, I remember there was this big controversy about Cannibal Holocaust as to whether or not some of the scenes, especially the scenes where people were being impaled on big sticks, were actually real or not. If so, that would technically make some of it a snuff film.

See, there’s just no reason to go chopping off people’s tallywackers. I mean, that aint right.

Posted by DJ D @ 09/25/2007 10:51 PM EDT

I’ve seen all or part of all of the Nightmare on Elm Street flicks, except for Part 4.  It is worth renting?

Posted by Andy @ 09/25/2007 10:56 PM EDT

Definitely.  Love Part 4.  Always dug Alice.  It has some pretty great kills, too.  It wasn’t Dream Warriors, but they were still really trying.

Posted by Matt @ 09/25/2007 11:04 PM EDT

I’ve always preferred the atmospheric horror movies as opposed to the gorefests (nothing wrong with those but that stuff doesn’t scare me).  You guys NEED to check out Session 9 for a great little spooky flick.  A bunch of guys are hired to clean out the asbestos and junk from an old insane asylum (filmed in a real ex-insane asylum).  Creepy, I say!  I second Fright Night, just watched it a couple nights ago.  Fright Night Part II is sadly out of print but I found a divx copy, will watch that tomorrow night.  Another good creepy one is Dead and Buried from 1981.  It is available from Netflix.  Don’t miss the notorious syringe in the eye!

Posted by freudguy @ 09/25/2007 11:04 PM EDT

Cameron T, I don’t recommend “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” since it’s a film done to show a style (film noir) instead of telling an actual story.  There is a strung together collection of iconic camera angles and lots of dark shots but not much of a plot to string them to.  The overall production is hampered by the director’s quest to capture a certain look.

In short, the movie sucks ass.

That’s my 30 second review (and to think I looked forward to that movie for some reason).
