09/20/2007: Pumpkin Ice Cream and free Ghoul-Aid!

Quick Note #1: I believe I’ve corrected the coding mishap that’s been causing all of the Countdown articles to look like textual mine fields on Mac computers.  If you’ve got a Mac, please let me know if the text still looks funky.  (Funky in a bad way, I mean.)

Quick Note #2: I’m back in this month’s issue of ToyFare (#123) with a fairly large feature on Gobots.  I had to finally train myself to not call them “Go-Bots” or “GoBots” or any other variation that looks more correct even if it really isn’t.  I haven’t seen the issue myself yet, but God willing, nobody cut the two-paragraph aside where I gush about Rock Narlies for no good reason.

I’ll be in next month’s issue as well with a far spookier topic, but let’s concentrate on spooky topics that are, as they say, in the now.  Today’s Countdown entry is about Edy’s limited edition Pumpkin Ice Cream, which is one of those “little things” I point to whenever my imaginary friends ask me why I like the holidays so much.

If you’re smart enough to sit on the blog hitting F5 all day long, today’s your lucky day:

The first 15 people who e-mail me their name and address will receive a free packet of Kool-Aid’s most unholy flavor, Ghoul-Aid.

UPDATE: All 15 packets have been accounted for.  Thanks for playing.  There will be more stupid contests like this throughout the season!

I always liked Gobots better than Transformers anyway… they seemed more accessible.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Ghoul-Aid.

So when you drink this does The Kool-Aid guy burst through your wall and feast on your sugar laced blood?

Looks fine to me, Matt. I is a Mac. When Safari was mentioned I was like, no, it still happening in Opera for me.

Safari, ftl.

Thanks!  Whenever I looked at the site on my work’s Mac comp, the articles always looked like a mess.  But not quite the level of mess that people were describing. :)

Posted by Matt @ 09/20/2007 2:41 PM EDT

looks fine on my mac, using Firefox

I noticed a lot of products and companies are completely edging away from artificial ingredients and only using “all natural”.

Posted by shawna @ 09/20/2007 2:48 PM EDT

So how do we know if we have won?

I too, was a victim of the Growing Text That Tried To Eat My iMac, but under the circumstances in which I cruise the ‘net, I thought it was just my ‘puter.

The goofy skull looks like he might enjoy some Ghoul-Aid if he had a stomach to keep it in.

You will be e-mailed if you’re a winner. :)

Matt does not lie, I just got my winning email notice.

This just made my Halloween season, and its only September!

Just scored me some kool aid. Always lurk, never post.
I love you so much my tongue hurts.

Posted by Bobbifett @ 09/20/2007 2:57 PM EDT

A winner is me as well. I knew kicking around this place for nearly 7 years would pay off eventually, and now it has. In sweet, sweet Kool-Aid.

Posted by Evin. @ 09/20/2007 3:01 PM EDT

As a long time reader, first time partaker in one of X-E’s contests, I’m going to thank you for the pack of Ghoul Aid.
*bows down*
Since Ghoul-Aid (or any kind of Kool-Aid) isn’t available in my country, it’ll be the first time I try it. I shall make this an event I’ll remember forever.

Posted by Trike @ 09/20/2007 3:02 PM EDT

Actually, you know what, it’s actually almost 8 years, not 7. God damn. First article I read was on December 27th 2000. That’s a long time.

Posted by Evin. @ 09/20/2007 3:05 PM EDT

AHHH! I really wanted the ghoul-aid. My favorite is still probably blue-dini. I used to make that stuff and sell it with my friend in front of my house around fourth of july.

Posted by modern day pirates @ 09/20/2007 3:38 PM EDT

I am literally angry with rage right now.

Well, okay, no I’m not.  It’s sort of hard to get upset, even over Kool-Aid related shenanigans, when you’ve just spent the last two hours hanging out with dinosaurs.  The fact that I now live within walking distance of an actual natural history museum is something that won’t fit all the way into my brain.  I’m sure a week from now I’ll be hanging around the apartment with nothing to do and it’ll take hours of mucking about online before I think “Fuck it, I’m gonna go look at some dinosaurs.”

Free of charge, no less.  Everything is awesome.

Posted by Jedoc @ 09/20/2007 3:41 PM EDT

Yeah Matt! Got the toyfair eariler this week, good work on the article, read the whole thing thinking this is a. more informative, and b. funnier than usual toyfair articles. guess i know why now

Wow, I cant Believe this site is such a good Advertising campaign, after reading the last Blog, I went to the local Wal-Mart and Bought the Ghoul and Skeleton Candles that bleed outta their sockets.

Oh yeah Matt if you havent heard they are making another Friday the 13th sequel, I believe that they said shooting begins in the beginning of 2008. I’ll go see if I can dig up a link to that article.

Doing the Halloween Countdown is more or less my way of not feeling bad about about buying pumpkin-themed party lights and inflatable lawn vampires as big as my car.

…Does this mean there is an article about car-sized inflatable lawn vampires in our near future?!?!  *fingers crossed!*

The fiance and I love ice cream… and pumpkins… and Halloween… you can see where this is leading.  I must find this delectable before the weekend is done!!

(Matt, you may not want to read this next comment lest it make you puke…)
Our local Rusty’s Custard makes a Pumpkin Pie custard treat every year, complete with graham cracker crust and whipped cream.  It is truly the highlight of my Thanksgiving season, even more so than turkey and mashed potatos!  Too bad it’s not available for Halloween.

Posted by Special K @ 09/20/2007 4:00 PM EDT

That totally rocks that you did a Countdown entry on the Pumpkin ice cream!  I was just commenting on this in one of the other threads the other day.  I have to admit I really like it.  Then again, I love pumpkin flavoured food.  I think the Pumpkin Cheesacake they have at Olive Garden right now is outstanding.

And I haven’t read the new Toyfare article, but I have enjoyed all the other articles you’ve done for Toyfare so far.  So, I’m looking forward to reading it.

Posted by Threnodaemis @ 09/20/2007 4:02 PM EDT

I’m the complete opposite of Matt when it comes to pumpkin.  I LOVE IT!  I consider it one of the best things about Halloween and Thanksgiving.  From ice cream to pies to breads to cookies to blizzards to fudge to shakes, I love them all.  I can’t wait to go down to the Stone Cold Creamery sometime and get their pumpkin shake.  YUMMY.

Believe it or not, I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a gingerbread cookie, so I can’t say if it’s similar to pumpkin or not.

Anyway, I convinced my mom to go on a Halloween “looksie” trip today (meaning we looked, but didn’t buy anything.  That stuff is expensive).  We went to the two Halloween shops near us first.  One of the most popular costumes this year seems to be the oversized Grim Reaper from the Bill Murray “Scrooged” movie.  Everyplace we went had one.  But I got to say, nothing really stood out this year costumewise.

After a quick trip to Gordman’s and Hobby Lobby for the same reason and seeing nothing interesting, we went to Menards.  Trust me, hardware stores are awesome places to go for Halloween decorations of the mechanical/electrical kind.  I wanted to get all of the motion detection, singing, moving, items, but those things are expensive right now.  My favorite was a bat on a tree branch that spun around while singing “You Spin Me Right Round, Baby, Right Round”

I did see a few Christmas items also, along with some Thanksgiving (people decorate for Thanksgiving?).  But I will devote all my time to Halloween, for now.

*insert long stream of expletives tied together because I don’t know how to insert strikethroughs*

You posted during my American Dilemmas class… I was learning about how transgendered people were being oppressed when I could have been learning firsthand about how delicious ghastly Kool-Aid could be. =’(

Couldn’t pumpkin ice cream be considered a Thanksgiving thing too, what with the pie?

Posted by Ben @ 09/20/2007 4:34 PM EDT

Dang…I woulda liked some Ghoul-Aid…for real.  Anywho, pumpkin pie definetly has a gingerbread-like taste…cinnamon.  So long as the pie hasn’t collected the pumpkin grease crap on the top of it, I loves it, only with whip cream.

Posted by EtHM @ 09/20/2007 4:40 PM EDT

Special K  Braums sells pumpkin ice cream and it’s very delicious.

Matt and crew congrats on the new sponsor!  I have already fulfilled your demand of buying something Halloweeny that I do not need, that being a bleeding “Halloween” (the movie) knife.  $5 at Wal Mart.  If you guys haven’t seen these they’re pretty cool, but old technology, the blood hides in the handle until you hold the knife down to your side.  Well worth $5!

A friend of mine informed me that a small thrift store in OKC has old 80s cartoon/comic themed full sized Halloween cards.  Not remakes, but actual, unsigned cards from back in the day.  He-Man, Ninja Turtles (comic book style, so she said), to name a couple.  I’m going over there straight after work and depending on what they are, how much they are, and how many are there, I might just clean them out, and if that’s the case I will be sending Matt a Halloween card or two.  With his permission, might do something with the remaining cards similar to what he did with the Ghoul-Aid and spread the jackpot among those who would appreciate such a find.

I’m trying not to get my hopes up and I’m really hoping she’s not teasing me still about my Marvel comics t-shirt, so I will just say this is a maybe, and I will let you guys know as soon as I know something.

CRAP DAMNIT!

I actually found this back when it was first posted, but I made the mistake of looking here on a school computer, so when I pressed the email button, it caused the entire program (I was on firefox) to completly freeze. Crap. You owe me!!! :(

Whew, now that’s off my chest. I was always a transformers fan, but my cousin had a lot of the original Gobots toys, which made me really jealous and wanted them. I gotta find the new Toyfare.

Halloween/Pumpkin Ales & brews are common at microbrews here on LI, especially Blue Point & John Harvard’s.

Posted by Invader Norbert @ 09/20/2007 4:49 PM EDT

Lol. That’s really weird. I’ve been reading through the backlog of your blog (and articles) and I just finished reading about when you gave out Ghoul-Aid as an artwork prize.

Posted by Ladytink_534 @ 09/20/2007 4:53 PM EDT

Gosh darn it, no Ghoul-Aid for me. :(

But it doesn’t hurt so much because Pumpkin ice cream is back! We went on a quest for this last year, and we finally found it at K-Mart, of all places. It was fantastic, and I can’t wait to get some this year. I did have a pumpkin pie Blizzard at the DQ a couple of weeks ago, which was very good, but I prefer this ice cream to the liquefied pie texture of the Blizzard.

“Edy’s” ice cream?

The brand name is supposed to say “BREYERS.”

Is this one of those regional differences, like Best Foods/Hellman’s mayonnaise?

Posted by Mars @ 09/20/2007 5:15 PM EDT

Pumpkin pie can taste like gingerbread, or like pumpkin, depending on who makes it. I personally spice the heck out of mine, so it’s mostly the spices you taste.

I am much like JLAJRC in that I love all things pumpkin. I am now craving Baskin Robbins’ Pumpkin something-or-other flavor. I don’t think there are any Baskin Robbinses this far south. They better have it when I go home in October.

Posted by Hazzard @ 09/20/2007 5:38 PM EDT

Edy’s is the same as Dreyer’s, both made by Nestle. Breyer’s is different.

Posted by Saint @ 09/20/2007 5:38 PM EDT

Mars: Hmm… I always wondered why we would get commercials for Breyers but never any Breyers in the stores…

Posted by Special K @ 09/20/2007 5:38 PM EDT

Considering that pumpkin pie spice contains cinnamon and ginger, yes, the gingerbread analogy is appropriate.

Darn it, now I really really really want a Pumpkin Spice Latte or a shake.  I’ll have to finally take myself to Cold Stone next time I’m in the city.

Posted by Moony @ 09/20/2007 5:59 PM EDT

Damn!  I was gone all day doing responsible adult things, so I missed out on the Ghoul-Aid.

Anyway, I freaking love the pumpkin ice cream at Braum’s, even if it does kinda look like newborn baby poop.  I’m gonna be working there, so hopefully I’ll get to eat some soon.  Yay!

Breyer’s is indeed different from Edy’s.  It is also way more awesome than Edy’s. XD

Posted by Annette @ 09/20/2007 6:08 PM EDT

I like pumpkin pie just fine, and so I imagine pumpkin ice cream might be nice, once, in a small amount at the side of something else. But I remember getting egg nog flavoured ice cream once. I’m not a big fan of egg nog, so maybe it’s just me, but it was just way too much of a good thing. Burned my throat from the sweetness. And for some reason I’d imagine the pumpkin ice cream to be the same way. Mind you, I don’t think we have Edy’s or Dreyer’s in Canada (we have Breyer’s but that’s entirely different and I’m annoyed at them for getting rid of the all Natural Vanilla. The new “triple churned stuff is terrible and sour tasting), so for me it won’t be an issue.

Posted by CMJ @ 09/20/2007 6:28 PM EDT

There’s a local ice cream place in my area that every year makes home made pumpkin ice cream and cinnamon flavored ice cream…get the two together as an ungodly taste orgasm! woo!

I found a pic today from fall 1977, of my husband at age 5 with is friend dressed as C3PO and Darth Vader for Halloween.  i can scan it if you want to use it as a back ground piece or comment on it or do something on vintage halloween costumes….seriously i liked my idea of sending in pics of ourselves as kids dressed for halloween.

I just spotted something interesting in the bathroom awhile ago.  Scary Berry, Bobbin for Apples, and Candy Corn scented (candy corn has a smell?) bubble baths in the shapes of a pumpkin, a skull, and a ghost.  Dad brought them home from work, but they look like something you would get at a “Bed, Bath, and Beyond” type place.

Posted by JLAJRC @ 09/20/2007 6:37 PM EDT

Matt: I know as a kid, I absolutely hated pumpkin pie - so much so that my mom would make an apple pie almost specifically for me, a tradition still lasting to this day.  And am I the only one that thinks apple pie tastes better after it’s been in the fridge for a few hours?

Shame I missed out on the Ghoul-Aid, been sick for the past three days so I haven’t been on-line much.  Oh well, I picked some packets up on eBay not to long ago and have some chillin’ in the fridge right now.

fistpittingnork: I you find a Spidey card that your willing to trade - I’m game for some Ghoul-Aid packets….

Posted by jjwspider @ 09/20/2007 7:02 PM EDT

Matt if you like the Pumpkin lattes at Starbucks you will probably like most pumpkin pies. They taste very similar.

JLAJARC, My Mother in law is crazy about the soaps, candles, smelly, shaped stuff for holidays.
She has them everywhere in every room, which is fine if you have one scent going on, but when you have several it becomes a very unappetising mishmash of scents. Yes  you can get most of that stuff at Bed Bath and Beyond.

mmmmmmmmm….pumpkin ice cream.
I loved your melty witch Matt it was great!

Posted by Jenica @ 09/20/2007 7:04 PM EDT

How can you not like milk? I love for that shit.

Oh my God so fucking busy this week, I’ve barely had time to do anything, let alone barely squeeze in my favorite time of the year; Matt’s countdown.

Keep it up, Matt; great stuff so far. Let’s get a few Halloween TV special reviews this year :D

Posted by Cotter @ 09/20/2007 7:12 PM EDT

I won some Ghoul-Aid and I’m absolutely thrilled!  But I cannot decide if I should drink it or add it to my Halloween decor (which is already in action and still growing).  And if I do decide to drink it, should I mix it with water or human blood?

Either way X-E has always been one of the best-looking sites on the web.

Definitely not me.  I code out the simpler article templates, but any of the primary pages, like the main page or the entire blog, is either Jacks or a combination of Jacks and someone else.  Then I add some little touches within my means.

Looking at the bottom of these articles is really bumming me out. I can’t believe I have been with the organization every year of the Halloween Countdown. Where has the time gone? I REMEMBER all of those layouts and articles, etc.

“Memories, like the spider in the web, Autumn colored memories, of the way we was…”

On the plus side, I get to wear face paint and shoulder pads to work tomorrow. “Uggghhh, what a rush!!”

Is Edy’s like the bastard child of Dreyers?

That Neopets mention reminded me of my lonely elementary school days. I went back to their website, Neopia is now a brutal police state.

Posted by mezzanine @ 09/20/2007 9:09 PM EDT

Manimal, if it’s any small consolation, I can cope better doing these things for this many years by noticing people who’ve been around for all of it. :)

Posted by Matt @ 09/20/2007 9:16 PM EDT

This is the ice cream of the gods. I’ve bought at least one container of Edy’s Pumpkin Ice Cream every year since college (probably almost 8 years now!), and it’s always just as good. Yes, it’s been around that long. Edy’s puts it out every year between late September and late November. My roommate then and I first encountered it on a routine grocery shopping trip, and I think we devoured the whole carton in less than two days.

Like JLAJRC, I love pumpkin. Pumpkin pie is the only pie I could ever make and my favorite Thanksgiving dessert, and I also make a mean loaf of pumpkin bread. Roasted pumpkin seeds rock.

Posted by starwenn @ 09/20/2007 9:21 PM EDT

I love pumpkin flavored anything. When Dairy Queen came out with their pumpkin pie Blizzards a couple years back, it was heaven. And now I’ve found out that Culver’s has pumpkin spice shakes now too…just…wow.
I’m going to have to get some of that Edy’s ice cream now.

maticdog Gobots better than Transformers? Yes, of course I own some Gobots, but I don’t know. That’s crazy talk.

Jester Thanks for the F13 link. I’ve been wondering about that. Apparently the next Nightmare on Elm St. movie will be a prequel. I hope we get a good burning scene with some good makeup at the end. I’d even be down with bringing back the dream demons. Speaking of which, I was thinking about describing a really wild dream I had last night that involved Jason attacking me and then morphing into Tom Savini and a couple of blonde twins in leather S&M gear, but realized if I got into it, it would turn into a book and I just can’t be bothered to type that much right now. Besides, I think I just mentioned the highlights. Oh, and at the end one of the twins skated away and I noticed that stitched into the bum of her leather outfit were the words, “Please use the other door.” It was at that point that I started laughing and then woke up.

Matt and everyone else I too detest the taste of pumkins and everything pumpkin related. And milk.

I’ve been a long time Wizard reader for years and have always glanced at ToyFare when I go on my Wednesday comics runs but never picked it up. Looks like I finally have a pretty good reason.

On a random note (just something I’m jazzed about), it felt really good to put in my official 2 week notice at my job yesterday. I’m moving to Columbia (about and hour and a half away from here) in 2 weeks, where I’ll start my new graphic design/video editing job. I went down there to train for my first 2 days last weekend and have to do the same this weekend and next weekend. The weekend after that I move. I counted it up and if you count last weekend all the way to my last day at my current job, it comes out to be 26 days straight of working somewhere without a single day off. And the very next day will be moving day. On Sunday, like the lord himself, I shall rest. Now I just gotta find a place to move to.

Oh, that!

Like gingerbread (or, as people are saying, pumpkin pie) mixed with ice cream that is sugared but otherwise unflavored.

Posted by Matt @ 09/20/2007 10:15 PM EDT

So I just found out that there is a television show that is like American Idol except for fashion models.  And apparently there’s a girl on the show called “Spontaniouse.”

This news made me angry, then sad, then angry, then I did a Google search to make just nobody was screwing with me, and now a significant portion of my soul is dead.

I’m going to spend the rest of the weekend attempting to hack the nuclear launch codes so that I can set everything right again with clean, pure radiation.  So if it turns out that you really can learn how to hack from movies and that one episode of Ghostwriter with Julia Stiles, sorry for destroying civilization in advance.  But to be fair, civilization completely provoked me.

I hate to make anyone jealous, but Pumpkin Ice Cream has been available in my neck of the woods year round since at least 2002. It’s made by a local creamery and is actually even less orange than the Edy’s version- I bet it even has a more authentic pumpkin taste.

Other Dan Thanks loads. Moving back to Columbia basically means returning to my radio show/club gigs/friends and pretty much life that I’ve been away from for over a year now. I was just giving it some thought and I’ve decided I’m going to make my last day at my current job Thurs, Oct 4th, instead of the 5th. If I’m moving on the 6th I’m going to need a day to rest up after a 25 day working streak and just pack.

Awesome article! One can never go wrong, reviewing seasonal ice cream flavours! :)

Did anyone else growing up, used to carve their pumpkins, and roast the seeds in the oven?  We used to look forward to snacking on those salty/buttery seeds each day after school close to Halloween!

Posted by crazy_mainer @ 09/20/2007 11:03 PM EDT

My family did that, but, in light of my pumpkin issues, I never went near them as a kid.  Tried them as an adult and they’re actually quite good — especially the way my family made them: Roasted in the oven with very generous amounts of sugar and salt.  My only request is that they are 100% cleaned before roasting.  No surprise roasted pumpkin gut bits, please.

Posted by Matt @ 09/20/2007 11:05 PM EDT

SUGAR?! I have to try that this year! Last year I carved so many freaking jack o lanterns for my wedding on October 13th, that I did not infact carve any for the actual night of Halloween, so I missed out on the seeds last year!

And we always washed our seeds very carefully before roasting! I always hated speghetti squash because of the odd texture and wormy flesh, the stringy inards of regular pumpkins I am sure I would hate just as much!

Since the pumpkin flavored ice cream is out now, I wonder if the apple pie flavored ice cream has hit the stores yet or if McD’s is planning on bringing back the apple pie shake….

Go figure, I read an article about pumpkins and it all comes back to apple pies….

On a side note, my wife’s family never roasted the pumpkin seeds.  Now though, she is entirely addicted to them and is eagerly looking forward to slicing open our pumpkin and roasting and salting them.  Good stuff.

Sometimes I feel like I am living under a rock….McDonalds has apple pie shakes?!? LOL

GloriousKyle- thanks for the link to that ice cream company!!!  Next time we are in Boston for a game, I am going to try out a bunch of those awesome flavours!!!

I’ve been enjoying pumpkin ice cream for years now thanks to United Dairy Farmers, an odd mix of gas station and ice cream parlor indigenous to Ohio. I seriously spend more money there in October than I do during the rest of the year combined because I can’t get enough of the stuff–it’s very light and has a healthy infusion of vanilla and spice to soften what would otherwise be a strange flavor. It was almost something too sacred to touch–I felt like Early Culyer from Squidbillies with his illicit love for pumpkins, caught by the pumpkin’s father while we were sharing a moment of passion on the porch. In the same way I felt the cashier was judging me as I cradled my gallon of ice cream as I walked up to the register, shocked and enraged that I would love their pumpkin ice cream so indecently and with such intensity on their OWN home property. Nevertheless, with humility in my heart, and with the truest, purest love for the pumpkin ice cream that could exist in a mere human heart, I, like Early, would take off my trucker cap, hold it firmly over my heart, look the cashier in the eyes, and ask “permission tah date yor ponkin?” No, I went above that. I wanted to MARRY that ponkin.

My world was shattered last fall, however, because they changed–no, COMPLETELY RAPED–the formula for it. Some rogue ice cream warlock in the UDF flavor dungeon thought it would be a good idea to give the customer the entire pumpkin pie experience rather than just pumpkin flavoring; consequently, little chunks of crust (I swear to you, actual pie crust cubes) and swirls of marshmallow creme were added to the mix. The result? Vomit inducing–I bought a whole tub of it never even entertaining the possibility that it was going to be anything other than the usual transcendent blast of pumpkin greatness. I gagged like the ice cream had somehow been subjected to the ninja art of substitution as I put the first spoonful in my mouth, as I could have sworn that I had bought pumpkin ice cream, but what entered was more like elephant anus filled with sawdust. One bite was all I took, and, wild with bereavement, I immediately dumped it outside the door for the friendly neighborhood cats to eat. I haven’t checked again this year to see if that blight upon humanity is still being stocked at UDF, but after reading this article odds are I’ll check tomorrow. If it’s there, though, I’m just going to suffer another year without my pumpkin ice cream.

I love most fall-themed sweets, though. I screamed at the top of my lungs when I finally saw the Little Debbie fall brownies with the tan frosting and the fall-leaf-shaped sprinkles on them in stock again. The reaction was twice as powerful when I saw Pumpkin Delights at the beginning of the month. So I guess it’s not a total loss.

I have to laugh at myself.  Because Matt you promised me an auto-win into the next contest because I had to deal with my IP address being blocked and all of the trouble I went through.  But I already have a packet of Ghoulaid so it’s kinda funny.  They sell caseloads it seems of the stuff on ebay all the time, if someone could afford to they could drink it on a regular basis.

When I have money to spend I spend it on ridiculous stuff as well.  And I love pumpkin flavored stuff.  Did you know coffeemate makes pumpkin flavored creamer during the holiday season?  They do.  lol.  I totally want to try out this ice cream this weekend.  The Brach’s kind.  Too bad they didn’t put crust bits in it that would of clinched it :(  That is what Dairy queen does when they have a pie flavored blizzards, it’s a nice touch.  Picture wise I like the comet cone better because the ice cream was more round.  If you look close you can see those little brown specs that’s really cool.  I bought a pack of these ice cream cones once they were oreo ice cream cones they are shaped like sugar cones but they are made out of oreo cookie.  They were very good with the vanilla ice cream I bought with them.  Especially the last couple of bites it had the best ratio of oreo cookie and vanilla ice cream they should totally have oreo cookie covered vanilla ice cream bits like those Dibs they have now and bon bons.  I have been siting on that idea for years.

And crazy_mainer I seen at Big Lots last week a bag of pumpkin seeds I didn’t look at it too closely but it was in one of those kinds of bags sunflower seeds come in with the resealable top.  Just thought I’d tell ya :)

Goob, I forgot!  You can either take one for this contest, or wait till the next. :)

Matt Killing someone’s spirit is a sweet idea but I’ll wait until next time.  Like I said I already have a packet of ghoulaid.  Interesting story, I was living with my sister for 10 months last year and I found some old koolaid packets in her cupboard she said that one of our older cousins gave her in a fairly small tupperware tub when our cousin moved.  When I saw the Ghoulaid I was tickled pink and I within minutes posted here.  Because I am nerdy like that sometimes.  I kept that one and another one I don’t remember the flavor I still have in storage someplace lol.

Bill life happens, I forgive you :)

Cordon Bleu You’re officially my friend now for referencing Squidbillies. I thought I was the only one around here who watched it. It’s disturbingly familiar since I live in the south and Early reminds me just a little too much of a lot of guys I went to high school with. “DO NOT TOUCH THE TRIM!”

That’s it. I might talk myself out of holding off on Halloween decorations for a couple more weeks, but dangit I gotta have me some Ghoulaid, and I’m talking now.

I’m still not going near that punkin shit though.

Roasting pumpkin seeds huh?  I did that for the first time with the lady a few years ago and I guess she didn’t cook them long enough… or maybe too long… or whatever.  I don’t recall what the problem was, but she wasn’t pleased with them.  I had never had them before so I had nothing to compare it to.  I guess it is sort of a family tradition with her.  She mentioned a few weeks ago that she wants to do it again this year.  Funny that it gets brought up here.

I’ve never been a huge fan of “pumpkin” flavored things.  I can tolerate pumpkin pie, but I would NEVER buy it for myself.  I think the last time I had any was a few years ago.  I guess it is one of those foods that you like to have every once in a while, and by that I mean every third Thanksgiving.

I got out of bed and onto my conveniently still-on computer (tonight is the start of a wonderful relationship where my computer stays on all the time. It’ll help keep me logged into my campus’s Cisco Clean Access Agent ..thing) with the hopes that I’d see something about… heck, I don’t know… ……..candy corn pumpkins or something. Oh well. If I’m not napping tomorrow afternoon, I’ll be one of those desperate -to-win types that hits F5 over and over, instead of studying for a Spanish quiz.

DJ D  Do not fear, you are not the only one who watches Squidbillies around here.  I, too, think it is hilarious.  I just don’t post that much.

As for pumpkin flavored things….they are disgusting!  I can’t touch the stuff.  I have found, however, what I think will be my favorite Halloween candy of this season:  Caramel Apple Sugar Babies.  They are Sugar Babies covered in a green apple candy.  Absolutely wonderful!!

Posted by DarkSideofBrightness @ 09/21/2007 7:55 AM EDT

Love the pumpkin-flavored stuff.  I’m brewing a batch of pumpkin pie beer this weekend - absolutely delicious for the Halloween season.

Posted by KJX @ 09/21/2007 8:10 AM EDT

Bleh.  Well apparently this was last week when my friend saw these cards and they’ve been sold by now.  I talked to the lady working there and she said it was about 10 cards “rubberbanded” together, but couldn’t remember much more than that.  Phooey!  I says.

Special K, I’m curious as to which is better.  Not sure I’ve ever had Edy’s before.  I had vanilla w/Butterfinger ice cream last night, from Braums, and it just might be one of my favorite ice creams now.  Another fav is Marble Slab’s rum ice cream with cherries and pecans folded in, scooped into a white chocolate dipped waffle cone.  I’m trailing off more into a conversation better had months ago.

Here in a month or so, Braums will start offering their egg nog ice cream, as well as their egg nog drink, which is by far the best egg nog (alcoholic or non) I’ve ever had.

I’m all over the place here, sorry.

All is Mac-a-licious again! Thanks!

Pumpkin Ice cream-  I can go for Pumpkin pie sometimes but I’m finding I’m mildly allergic to pumpkin and other gourds so I’d probably stay away from that one.

Posted by Dragonstorm @ 09/21/2007 8:31 AM EDT

Besides the gingerbread spices, the other thing pumpkin pie tastes like is sweet potato. If I’m recalling my Food Network correctly, most commercial pumpkin pies are actually composed of a combo of pumpkin and sweet potato. And now I have to try to make it to Starbucks before work.

Posted by squee4242 @ 09/21/2007 10:42 AM EDT

They use Hubbard Squash in ‘Pumpkin’ pie instead of pumpkins. Yum…

Posted by Mica M. @ 09/21/2007 10:54 AM EDT

There were literally more than a dozen cars in line at Starbucks, so I had to settle for McD’s crappy coffee. No pumpkin latte this morning :(

Posted by squee4242 @ 09/21/2007 11:09 AM EDT

Mr. Edy and Mr. Dreyer were partners. Edy’s and Dreyer’s are the exact same ice cream, they’re just marketed under different names in different parts of the country. Everything east of the Rockies is Edy’s. I learned the reasoning behind that on Unwrapped, but I’ll be darned if I can’t remember. :(

Posted by Lori @ 09/21/2007 11:41 AM EDT

I love that show, Unwrapped! Everytime it comes on I get of the couch and do that Arsenio Hall arm thing. That is an exaggeration, I don’t get off the couch.

Cordon Bleu: Were you going to set fire to the place if you weren’t allowed to marry the punkin?

Posted by kingklash @ 09/21/2007 12:34 PM EDT

DJ D: I may live in what’s generally considered a northern state, but, by some horrible twist of fate, my hometown is just about as bad as the deep south hellhole Squidbillies takes place in, so half of the fun in that show is how frighteningly it reflected some aspects of my social environment. To be honest, I didn’t watch much of the second season. It came on at a freakish time, 12:15 AM or somesuch.

kingklash: It’s slightly dangerous to light a gas station on fire, so I was prepared to take rejection like a man.

Matt, I’m trying to get this straight, so correct me if I’m wrong. You don’t like the flavor of pumpkin. You don’t like the flavor of bananas. You barely tolerate ice cream. You can’t stand milk. And you’re too afraid of shark attacks to have sex in the ocean.

I’ve gotta say, I feel kind of bad for you. Okay, I can take or leave the bananas, but the rest? You’re missing out on a lot. Bummer, man. I feel like we should be sending you packets of Ghoul-Aid.

Tell you what: this October while I gorge myself on every delicious pumpkin flavored thing I can get my hands on, I’ll enjoy it for you. I’ll relish the flavor and think of you and how much you could enjoy it if you had been born with pumpkin-friendly tongue genes. Shit, you keep me entertained year round. Sending you out some psychic pumpkin goodness vibes is the least I can do.

Posted by Chris @ 09/21/2007 1:17 PM EDT

Chris: You are correct but I may have exaggerated a bit on the ice cream front.

Posted by Matt @ 09/21/2007 1:19 PM EDT

Pumpkin ice cream! I am so glad it’s this time of year again. I love anything pumpkin… so much so that I had shampoo, body wash and a room spray that smelled like pumpkin pie. Oddly enough, I can’t stand pumpkin pie. I (sometimes) eat the filling though, I just hate crust.. yuck! Good think I know how to make pumpkin spice bars instead :) Oh and on my way to work today I saw the first house of the halloween season, it was great all decorated with tomb stones and one of those huge blow up snow globes. It had me wondering if it belongs to anyone on here!

Posted by Alyssa @ 09/21/2007 1:29 PM EDT

I’m a fan of Squidbillies too, with my favorite character by far being Granny.

“When Jesus was president, he used to eat babies…all the time. Wait, maybe it was Satan…One of them ate babies…”

“Good lord, it’s the Rapture, get my Jesus Wig!”

Bev: “That’s not Patrick Swayze!”
Granny: “He is if I have another cold beer!”

I wish [as] would put it back on the schedule soon so we would get to see the Halloween episode (with Demons, one that will kill and had a gay affair with the Sheriff, one that does the same thing but is cool about the whole “killing you” thing, and another killer demon with OCD)

Alyssa:  Your hair must really smell gourd.

Oh, it is to laugh.

(I’m so sorry.)

I tried to email you Matt but I’m using XP and Firefox. The top banner, especially Slimer, is sort of contorted and as I recall, was the same way last year on Firefox for the Halloween Countdown. No big deal but just letting you know.

Posted by Tony @ 09/21/2007 1:45 PM EDT

That’s awesome Matt I bought that ice cream right before you put the article up! Weird!

Posted by Tommy @ 09/21/2007 2:09 PM EDT

Norbert: One of the show’s weaknesses was that it seemed to lampoon the same subjects over and over and over. I went into it expecting Aqua Teen Hunger Force 2.0, but I left it off-put at the fact that I kept hearing different shades of the same joke(s) ad nauseum. It still had a few incredible episodes, though, and I couldn’t think of a better reference in all existing popular media than Squidbillies’ ponkin scene, which was absolutely golden.

I checked UDF today, pumpkin pie ice cream again this year. I swear enmity to them to the very ends of time and space.

Posted by Cordon Bleu @ 09/21/2007 3:18 PM EDT

I like that word.  Enmity.  I think I’ll try to use it today.

I saw the Halloween episode again the other day and noticed a bunch of jokes I didn’t catch the first time it was on. That’s thing abou that show. The jokes are so subtle sometimes and so quick you have to watch it a few times to catch it all. I agree-Granny might just be the best thing about that show.

Granny: “You didn’t use my date rape drugs, did you?”
Early: “I didn’t see your name on ‘em.”
Granny: “I told you to stay outta my date rape!”

I also love ‘Swayze Crazy’ and Early’s ‘Court Ordered Public Service Announcement’.

Is your hog on meth? How would you know? Here are some early warning signs:
–Sudden rapid weight loss
–Euphoria leading to paranoia
–Stealitization of yer thangs
–And jibbery style oinkery what make no sense a’tall.

Gourd tehehe

Bill I just wanna say, when I have control of the clicker on a tv that has basic cable I always flip it to the food network first.  I love the food network and most people think I am a geek for loving it so.  Watching an hour program during the christmas season on how Disneyworld cooks meals to make people feel extra christmasy and special isn’t for everybody, but it is for me (they make a HUGE gingerbread house and display it in the lobby!  It’s very detailed!)

Anyway the reason why I mention that is I LOVE GOOD EATS!!  I love it!  Alton Brown is my idol and I want to be like him but in female form.  I want to wear bowling shirts, having a spray bottle that has a dinosaur head on it (and the water/liquid comes out of his mouth) and I want a kitchenaid mixer that is black with flames down the sides!!  I have never made anything because of that show but I have gotten cravings for one specific thing because of that show all day until the next program.

And that chick on Easy Italian is smokin’ hot…’nuff said.

I am bound determined to get pumpkin ice cream though on my best friend’s weekend which is monday and tuesday.  And our walmart has those elvis peanut butter and banana reese’s cups I want to try (I bet they suck but I wanna try them!) and I forgot to snag them.  Oh well :(

I just got some of that Pumpkin Ice Cream today. It does taste very much like pumpkin pie filling (very very fluffy pumpkin pie filling…) It was buy-one-get-one so I bought an Edy’s vanilla as the second carton, and I found that the pumpkin flavor goes really well with the vanilla.
