09/15/2007: Time to die.
I’ve held off for long enough — The Halloween Countdown starts Monday!
If you’re new to the site, here’s how it works: Every weekday between Monday and Halloween, a new spooky article will be posted, covering both new-for-2007 Halloween stuff and tons of ghoulish goodies from yesteryear. I’m pretty happy with the amount of stuff I’ve found so far, especially considering that I’ve only really just begun to shop around.
I’m busy putting together next week’s articles now, so enjoy the SNT!

Holy shit, I’ve never been this early on an SNT before. Anyway, WOO HOO! Is Jones’ black cat licorice new this year? Tried it last week and it was delightful. A little mild flavor though. As a licorice lover, I could have handled something stronger.

I’m thinking either Michael Myers or a zombie. I’ve never been a fan of the full head mask, though, so I’ll probably be a zombie.

Posted by
AccidentalMartyr @ 09/15/2007 5:42 PM EDT
Timbo: Yes, that one’s new. One of the cans is sort of new, too, if adding “sour” to the title makes it new.

Hell yes!!! The countdown is here! Finally a reason to get out of bed every day… I’ve been having a bit of a Matt jones since the Summer Countdown ended.

I’m still bummed that Jones didn’t make new flavors or at least bring back my old favorite, caramel apple. Ah well. PS IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!
Kinda sucks that I don’t get Jones where I live (Vegas). I used to practically worship the cream soda at my local 7-11.

Happy birthday, Eddie! Yeah, I wish they had, too. Who knows though…maybe they were more popular last year than we thought?

I’ve been stalking the Halloween aisles in all the stores the past week. And what the hell at Michael’s having atleast 2 aisles already dedicated to Christmas?!
So far the only thing I’ve bought is the Garfield Holiday Specials on DVD ($5.50 at Target!) and a bag of Autumn Mix…cause candy corn is only good when there’s big obnoxious, sugary pumpkins to eat as well.

Posted by
Brian @ 09/15/2007 6:02 PM EDT
Excellent!
It’s so nice to take a weekend drive and see very temporary signs marking the presence of Halloween stores. Just south of Interstate 94 in Milwaukee popped up a dome-shaped Halloween Express (I think) store on the WI State Fair grounds.
I am so looking forward to the countdown.

Both Target and Wal-Mart have an amazing Halloween selection this year. Coolest thing I bought (from Tar-J) so far: An Advent calendar for Halloween…a 13 day countdown to the 31st. You open up cleverly labeled tombs and receive dismembered gummy body parts. Awesome.

EtHM @ 09/15/2007 6:07 PM EDT

Will we be seeing a revamped Halloween jukebox this season???

Posted by
EtHM @ 09/15/2007 6:09 PM EDT
Awesome! Looking forward to the mass of nifty stuff!
I’m on a diet and have been since December so the candy being released is something I must avoid, but with a Haunted House attraction opening up for the season, and a Halloween shop as well, I will be set anyhow.
I may dress up as a dark knight type of character. I have my weapon, gloves, and amulet, but still need the main bit of clothing and makeup.

BTW Matt, not sure if anybody’s mentioned, but the Jones Halloween soda has 2 new cans, 2 old. The new ones are red and yellow. Can’t remember the flavs. I’m guessing you probably already have ‘em, though.

Monday sounds good to me, I’m still a little reluctant to start celebrating before Oct- but this feels like it’s about time.
Also, this week I built a tiny Freddy Krueger out of LEGOs. His glove is make from pirate swords and binoculars. Click th’ name to see!
I wait all year for the Halloween mayhem that goes down at XE. Can’t wait. Bring it!

SNT- thank God. It has been far too long since I have made an SNT appearance. I wound up driving to a nearby town last night with the BF and 2 friends for a huge poker game with old buddies…called in sick to work today and slept ALLLLL DAY. I got up at 6 PM. I kind of feel bad about it. Just a little. But, all this XE to read cheers me up immensely.

Oooohh, this sounds exciting. Especially since when I started coming here, it was during the Halloween countdown last year.
Do you think people in Austin will still celebrate Halloween? I’m trying to convince my roommate to go trick or treating with me, but first I’ll need a costume….

Posted by
Ben @ 09/15/2007 7:32 PM EDT
Now that is good news indeed. Tomorrow, we’ll be headin’ on up to the State Fair, and that, with the Weening beginning Monday, really just floats my monkey!
I might get some more assorted costumes to use to make different outfits, but my Pizza Krueger really made a lot of Trick or Treaters night. That’s my advice: buy a lot of bits and pieces, mix and match, and don’t be afraid to make some simple props if you can’t find the ones you need.
It may be the handful of caramel apple candy corn talkin’, but: Hee hee hee hee hee hee…., that is all.

RANDOM RANTZ
————
- Seriously, when is McDonald’s gonna do the Monopoly game this year?
- Out of the blue, I thought of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pies today.
- “The King of Kong” is the best movie of the year. “DONKEY KONG KILL SCREEN IS COMING UP, IF YOU’RE INTERESTED!”
- Halloween decorations are too tech now. Everything I just saw at the grocery store has a crappy motor inside so that the poorly-painted rubber guy surrounding it moves around when you go near it. Manufacturers need to get back to the basics. I seem to remember being able to buy just plain ol’ bales of hay aa a decoration at any Wal-Mart.

A funny bit that amused us about Target’s Halloween setup this year: We were setting it all up the other morning and our signing guy pointed out that the company documents refer to the hanging bat decorations as the “bat mobiles.” We giggled and then played with the spooky moving books.

Second, woo hoo, Halloween Countdown’s comin’! I can’t wait to search the seasonal Halloween store in Westmont and the AC Moore and two dollar stores nearby for awesome cheap fall junk next week.

Oh, so true! My mom got the Autumn mix somewhere, but I haven’t seen it. Ironically, I work at a grocery store, so I’ve seen plenty of candy corn, but none of the pumpkins (although people have started buying actual pumpkins already).

What does SNT stand for? And I want to see King Of Kong really badly; is it still playing?!
1. Happy birthday Eddie
2. If one post ever summed up what I think is the essence of Jessica Marie, it is the one above
3. Went to TARGET and WAL-MART tonight. E. Clarie calls Target “Halloween House” (???) :). She likes it but the haunted books (that pop around and talk) scare her. The books?? I think I will keep her away from those; it doesn’t bode well for future literacy.
Allie got some little jack-o-latern mitts.

This shall be my 5th Halloween countdown :) I came into X-E actually when the first countdown was about 2 weeks into it so that is how I know how long I have been loyal to this website lol. Funny but true. ‘tear’ sunrise sunset…
I have seen Halloween stuff here and there at walmart and big lots but haven’t ‘got into it’ yet. Watched the Halloween remake…and other scary movies. I know online where to watch the lost boys maybe I can cue that up later that’s a tradition for me. Also Halloween 3 season of the witch (I am one of the rare ones I think that actually enjoys that movie)
Oh yeah and Matt I suggested this last year or the year before, but can you PLEASE consider adding Halloween by Insane clown posse? It’s a bit vulgar (but not as vulgar as their other songs, eesh) but it’s totally about Halloween. I also think the song Boogey man (I think that is what it is called) by them would fit too but that has a lot of swearing in it and you might not think everyone would approve. Just a thought
I got a Halloween book almost a month ago for my cousin she has an 11 month old and you put the babies face in the back and it’s like the baby is trying on costumes because there is a hole through the whole book where their face is with drawings of costumes. I but she’ll love it I think it’s a bit cheesy but enjoy it too.

If we’re recommending songs for the Jukebox, I would just die if The Mighty Boocifer, the theme to the ride Ghost Hunt (I know it’s at Lake Compounce in CT, but I’m not sure if it’s anywhere else) were added. Click my name to hear the song.
BTW, I’ve operated that ride for four seasons, so that song is probably permanently soaked into my subconscious.
Awesome! Glad to see the start of the countdown. And with Superman/Doomsday coming out Tuesday and the Spider-Man 3 DVD on the way to me from the Land Down Under, next week is shaping up to be a big, big week.
The wife and I did a little shopping today and we are now the proud owners of a new pumpkin (that will later be sliced and diced) and a light-up Football-O-Lantern.
No Halloween costume for me but my nephew is going to be Leonardo - funny how TMNT has come back since my childhood.
BTW - Happy Birthday Eddie and happy SNT all!

Oh man, the nights are getting crisper and Fall is finally in the air. I’m freakin’ ecstatic, and not just because my Trojans rolled right over Nebraska tonight. Can’t wait for the countdown!
Speaking of horror movies, Whats the scariest movie you guys ever saw. Remember going to go see pet cemetery when it first came out, and having nightmares about it for about a few months. Nothings ever scared me since then.

A new Wallgreen opened up near my house. I was pretty impressed by their Halloween selection. I’m used to drug stores having cheaper generic stuff. Walgreens had all kind of merchandise for Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Chucky, and most importantly they had a mask of the Burger King’s King.
I also went to Dollar Tree today. They had their Halloween stuff for sell too, but it was underwhelming compared to last year.
Looking forward to the Halloween countdown.

Scariest horror film I’ve ever seen would have to be the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It was a good movie but I didn’t feel all that unnerved until I had a nightmare that very night. In the nightmare I was watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre in a theatre and Leatherface ripped through the movie screen and attacked the audience. I then tried to escape in the back of a pick-up truck. Looking back it was all strangely meta.
Also a bit of a confession, I’ve never seen The Exorcist.

Posted by
Radar @ 09/16/2007 1:02 AM EDT
That would still have to be The Shining. That movie is proof that you don’t have to use a ton of special effects to be scary-it’s mostly distance shots, music, and makeup that does the work. Okay, so they did use pretty elaborate sets in that movie.
Heh, I’ve heard Stephen King didn’t like it. The book is indeed better, but the movie is still wicked scary.

Posted by
Andrew @ 09/16/2007 1:03 AM EDT
I saw TCM way too late in the game to be that affected by it, but I could totally see that I would have been had I seen it at a younger age.
All told, I’d say that the trailers and commercials for horror movies screwed with my psyche way more than the actual films. Remember the commercial for Elm Street 5? (Dream Child) With Freddy and the gothic stroller? Yipes.

Matt @ 09/16/2007 1:11 AM EDT
Geez…I’ve CTRL-F’d a total of 1.7 million “awesomes” in this SNT so far. I’d be inclined to make fun of that if about 100% of me weren’t thinking the same about the upcoming Halloween countdown.

Posted by
O.T.I.S. @ 09/16/2007 1:14 AM EDT
I was utterly traumatized by the Fire in the Sky trailers. I totally bought the whole “true story” thing.
The Shining is a great movie, and I love it. I remember watching it for the first time home alone one night…spooky. Now it’s too familiar to really be scary.
YEA!!!!!!!!! HALLOWEEN COUNT DOWN SOON!!!! I just started decorating, my first string of halloween lights went up today!!!

Posted by
crazy_mainer @ 09/16/2007 1:38 AM EDT
I was always more scared by ads for those movies than the movies themselves. To this day I haven’t seen ‘Magic’ - the episodes of Buffy and the Twilight Zone with the living dummies were enough for me.
The Shining would be pretty much the only movie I’ve seen that actually scared me.

Moony @ 09/16/2007 1:53 AM EDT
Radar It’s ok I’ve never seen that movie either. I should someday, but I am more into zombie movies then the creepy horror movies.
And the scariest movie I have ever seen? Kids lol
No really I think the movie that has creeped me out was that movie Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers. I think it’s because he lured virgins in for him and his mother to feast on and I think what clinched it was the scene where him and his mother did the wild thing. That was really creepy. I think at the time I thought they aren’t gonna, they aren’t, they wouldn’t put that in a movie, nuh-uh, and then they did lol. I think I was about 9 and I have seen it since and man that is creepy.

Happy Birthday Eddie!.
Just wanted to send a quick Happy SNT to everyone. My allergies have been murder today so I have been fairly drugged up tonight.
I can’t believe I was in a medicinal haze through a horror movie conversation. Oh well, I am sure that there will be a few more over the next six weeks.
Hope everyone is well.

I’m excited, I can feel Fall coming! The wind is picking up, the leaves are starting to fall, and the air is becoming brisk. Soon the corn mazes will start, then all the cool local Halloween festivals, and the summer amusement parks will turn into spooky weekend affairs. Bring on the candy corn, motherfuckers!

Oops, now I feel like a jackass. Hope it’s a good one, Eddie :D.

Hooray Halloween Countdown!!! I’ve been looking forward to this for the past two months. I can’t wait to see what fun stuff you’ve got this year.
A friend recently told me about Jones Blueberry Pomegranate soda. I bought some last night, and it’s pretty dang tasty. I’m not one much for fruity sodas. But this one is nice. Partially due to the cane sugar instead of the HFCS goo in most other sodas.
I just got a new copy of the “Things You Never Knew Existed” catalog. It’s chock full of great Halloween goodness!

Im not big on scary movies. If you want something that’ll mess with your head, watch the Japanese Guinea Pig horror series.
Flowers Of Flesh And Blood is one of their movies, and that particular movies gives me the chills.

GloriousKyle: That Freddy was the coolest thing I’ve seen today. If they made a Nightmare on Elm Street game for the Atari, that’s what Freddy would’ve looked like.
In General: Ah, the Halloween season. Forget christmas, this is the big holiday for us at X-Entertainment. Merry X-Entertainmas everyone! Commence the Partydown!

Whoo! I’m in Hawaii now, and have regular access to the web…RIGHT in time for the countdown. I’ve got a ton of catching up to do. But, better late than never! Woot!

I don’t think I’ll really dress up, but I’ll probably don my Fedora and Freddy glove.
I’m really excited about Halloween already, yesterday I started decorating my room. Cool that the Countdown will start on Monday.^^

jjwspider: Hah! Jayne is the voice of Superman! I’m definitely going to have to Netflix that one.
If we’re talking about the scariest movie overall, I’m going to have to join the Exorcist crowd. Even when you know most of the scenes going in from all the outside references, that’s still a big steaming bowl of screwed up.
However, I’m going to have to say that the movie that scared me the most, personally, was The Last Unicorn. Have you seen it lately? That film is a bad, bad trip to lay on a four-year-old. Fucking red bull. And that witch woman from the circus…

My stores have already exploded will everything Halloween! And it’s getting cold here and along with that Fall smell we all love and know. Plus why do these stores want to ruin my Halloween glee with 2-3 aisles of Christmas crud? Please one Holiday at a time.

Not too sure about scary, but the original Halloween is one of the most suspenseful movies ever made, considering I just saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago.
Justin: I also got that catalogue and it’s REALLY cool. Too bad the stuff in it is too expensive for me.

JLAJRC @ 09/16/2007 12:28 PM EDT
Ah, The Exorcist! I was watching that movie in my Apartment, alone, and lost power in the middle of it. I was so scared my feet went to sleep. That’s when you know you’re scared.

I too must throw my hat into the never seen The Exorcist ring. The movie that scared the crud out of me was the original Nightmare on Elm Street. I snuck in to see it when it first came out in theatres and had to wait outside for my mom to get done playing bingo. I just knew Freddy was gonna come out of the wall behind me and grab me.

Wooh! I’m definitely ready for the Countdown!
The Halloween season really kicked off for me last night. A small, nearby town has an old three-story Mill that someone turned into a year-round Haunted House attraction/Bar/Restaurant combo (click my name for their website). A couple of friends and I checked out the Haunted House portion last night (my Fiancee doesn’t do scary stuff, she stayed in the bar), and it was actually pretty decent. So today, I’m all geeked for the spooky season to start, and I’ve almost talked myself into hanging up the decorations a bit early.
Woo! Whee!

I need to start saying that more.
I just finished rereading the Marc Summers’ Mystery Magic Special. It’s still hilarious no matter how many times it is read.

The Scary movie that scared me first was ..I kid you not.. Germlins. The one that still gives me the creeps is Halloween the original. Jacobs Ladder is a close second.
