09/08/2007: Hangin’ With Mr. Krueger.

I got a couple of e-mails this week from readers wanting to know if I’d be doing a “traditional” Halloween Countdown this year. While my sanity would certainly benefit from doing a bunch of shorter blog entries, I’ve come to realize that the holidays are all about suffering for my bullshit art. YES, there will be a very traditional and very what-you’re-used-to X-E Halloween Countdown this year. Very soon, in fact. Don’t want to marry myself to a launch date just yet…but very soon.

And, now that I think about it, this will be the fifth annual Countdown. The fifth! Thanks to everyone who e-mailed in with suggestions and donation offers. If anyone else thinks they have something I can cover this year, drop me a line.

Hit the town last night on the hunt for spooky goodness, and among other things to be reported on in due time, I came across the beauty seen above: A Freddy Krueger hanging decoration. Only slightly expensive with its thirteen dollar price tag, I believe this a new-for-2007 item. I love the shit out of it. It’s perfect for Halloween, but Freddy’s reach is jusssst broad enough to make this one a genuine perennial.

The quality is terrific — Freddy’s head and hands are made of some kind of awesome rubbery material that’s both realistic and fun to touch, while his trademark sweater is real wool, or at least, such a good facsimile that I don’t feel the need to fact check.

Look close at Freddy’s glove. I sure wish I did when I was at the store. Apparently, some hooligan saw fit to rip off three of Freddy’s four glove blades, leaving him both a less effective killer and a constant middle finger-giver. I’m gonna head back to return it for not-wrecked version, and it’ll be interesting to see how the conversation with the store manager goes.

I don’t feel like measuring the hanging Freddy decoration, but if you’re looking for some sense of size, he’d make a great hand puppet. Once I improve my ventriloquism skills, I’ll be available for Bar Mitzvahs.

Happy SNT!

PLEASE review the adventures of pete and pete’s halloween episode. :)

I would definately keep it the way it is.

Since he’s not wearing his hat, when I first scrolled down, before I registered the complete picture, I thought I might be looking at some bizarre realistic Krang head.

I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. Sorry.

Ghosted by Frostor @ 09/08/2007 10:03 PM EDT

I guess the lack of a hat is a bit of a faux pas, but since that gives us an excuse to coin the term “Fred pas,” I’m not too unhappy about it.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/08/2007 10:04 PM EDT

Sucks about the glove, how did you not see the missing blades though? Was it in some sort of a display box or something?

Ghosted by El Loco Gordo @ 09/08/2007 10:07 PM EDT

With daily highs still into the 90s, it’s definitely not feeling spooky here in NY.

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 09/08/2007 10:10 PM EDT

I think this is the earliest I’ve gotten in on an SNT. Or read one, for that matter. Matt, praytell in which shop did you find such a treasure? I’ve only seen a Halloween aisle at Walgreen’s thus far.

Oh, and here’s the official word from Webster’s:

crunk

Main Entry: crunk
Pronunciation: \ˈkrəŋk\
Function: noun
Etymology: crunk, word of fluctuating meaning used during the 1990s in lyrics of the rap groups OutKast and Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz
Date: 2000
: a style of Southern rap music featuring repetitive chants and rapid dance rhythms

When I shop for Halloween things, I’m kind of a lunatic. Something strange comes over me. Freddy could’ve been alive and singing and I still would’ve been too busy throwing more things into my handbasket to notice.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/08/2007 10:10 PM EDT

I went to a little festival in the town I’m living in this year for school and saw a lot of shitty Halloween crafty things. But get this, there’s actually a store (I don’t want to call it a restaurant) called Wiggles, that only serves Fair Food like funnel cakes and stuff. It…is…bizarre.

Ghosted by Tommy @ 09/08/2007 10:10 PM EDT

“Hangin’ With Mr. Krueger.” Best blog-post-title ever.

Ghosted by mr.skeleton @ 09/08/2007 10:11 PM EDT

I actually watched Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time yesterday. In fact, that was the first Freddy Kreuger film I’d ever watched. It was weird. I mean, I knew pretty much every aspect of the plot through parodies and references, so it was almost a deja vu experience…especially with that Johnny Depp who was like the retarded younger cousin of Johnny Depp.

So, uh…do I have to turn in my XE badge now?

Ghosted by Jedoc @ 09/08/2007 10:11 PM EDT

Awesome! You should review “Ghost Dots” a new Halloween candy. They’re dots but they’re glow in the dark color and the packaging is an awesome dark purple. Spooky stuff.

PS Got the letter and stickers. Thanks Matt! :D

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 09/08/2007 10:12 PM EDT

Dude, you have to transcribe the conversation between you and the store manager. You can either give him the customer in the showdown who doesn’t take any sh** like Clint Eastwood OR the high and whiny a la Bruce McCullough (”I don’t want a different Freddy, I want this one BUT FIXED!”)

Also, see if you can get 3 bucks knocked off for the lack of hat-tiude. (yuck)

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/08/2007 10:14 PM EDT

Matt,

I am a DJ at a college radio station and sent out the summer stream for a bit. It was a hit!

Love the freddy… despite his shortcomings.

Thanks for all you do!

awesome, gonna have to find one.
cant wait for the countdown.
check out this awesome boo berry figure/car, i think itd make a fitting entry.

Ghosted by joshc @ 09/08/2007 10:23 PM EDT

This looks like it ought to be hung from inside a window looking out. But maybe it’s not big enough. Then just hung from the front porch.
Looking foward to the countdown,Matt please don’t call it bullshit art, or we are all a bunch of bullshit art lovers.
Happy SNT!

just dropping by to check the meter. – happy SNT everybody.

Holy crap! I’m so glad you did this, cause I SO almost bought this last night! My cousin and I were hitting all the Halloweeny type places around here to cruise for decorations and I saw this in Micheals (yeah, that’s where you can find it for those who want to know). I excitedly yelled at him to come over and look at it cause I really wanted it, but didn’t want to shell out the 13 bucks. His response was, “you may as well get it now, you know you’re just going to change your mind and come up here and get it later anyway.” Sure enough, this article is all I need to finally give me that shove. I think tomorrow Freddy will be mine.

Oh, and to answer the “was it in a box?” question, if you look close at the picture, it looks like there’s a black line coming out of the top of his head. That’s actually an elastic string with a loop to hang Freddy from the display rack. So no, it’s just Fred, no box–at least that’s how they had it at the Micheals I went to.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/08/2007 10:29 PM EDT

Oop! Sorry, I just goofed! I meant to say I saw this at Party City, not Micheals. Sorry bout that.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/08/2007 10:31 PM EDT

Ya know.. Freddy and Jason were the absolute terrors of my childhood. I literally had nightmares about them and lived in terror of stumbling across them while channel surfing.

Now I love both movie franchises. It’s weird how childhood terrors become adult friends.

This concludes your pointless blog post for the night!

I just noticed last year’s countdown started on the 11th- that’s much earlier than I remembered, and also only a few days from now…

There’s an old Halloween Comedy Central bumper from the early 90’s I have on one of my MST3k tapes that I’d love to share- it’s basically just a static shot of a guy riding by on a bicycle wearing a ghost sheet, but howling as if he’s about to wipe out.

Also- Chicken McNuggets: buy one get one free 10pc and 6pc at participating “McDonald’s” eateries through Sept 22nd. That’s 20 McNuggets for under $4. Track down a McBoo Pail on eBay and start filling up!

Ghosted by GloriousKyle @ 09/08/2007 10:50 PM EDT

I was so happy to see Target Halloweenified last night. Turned the corner between bath towels and storage crates, and in the spot where all the notebooks and stuff used to be was a shitoad of candy. Heck YES!

Oh, and some of those storage containers were black and orange, by the way.

Ghosted by Thorzul @ 09/08/2007 10:55 PM EDT

Or a “shitload” of candy.

A shitoad isn’t quite as much.

Ghosted by Thorzul @ 09/08/2007 10:56 PM EDT

Just had a quick thought after my previous post. You should include “Vampires, Mummies, and the Holy Ghost” By Jimmy Buffett in the Halloween jukebox this year. Looking forward to the countdown.

Chicken McNuggets: buy one get one free 10pc and 6pc at participating “McDonald’s” eateries through Sept 22nd. That’s 20 McNuggets for under $4

Yay!

This will be my first Halloween Countdown as I’ve only just started reading the site. Looking forward to it!

Is it weird that I think the replicating android girl in the new Heineken commercial is just dead cute? Especially at the end when the one in the middle does her little boogie…it’s kinda hot!

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/08/2007 11:03 PM EDT

Dang, I love McNuggets and hope the deal is around in my area. Although, it would taste so much better out of a McBoo pale….

Did anyone else notice the sharkelberry fin picture next to Freddy? Man that was some good stuff.

Oh! and I had to sell my wii last week to pay for an error that the electric company made :(
they correected the error AFTER I sold the wii.
So today after getting sniped by 50 cents for about 5 hours straight, I bought my self a Sega Dreamcast for 25.00 including shipping. I bought Space Channel 5 Stupid Invaders and Shenmue…all in all my total was about…73 dollars. Now i gotta save for a new wii and a 360

DJ D,

I DJ at Saint Mary’s University in Winona, MN. Oddly enough, I am a prof… not a student. Thankfully they humor me :-)

Oh yeah, quick question for some of you….has anyone ever purchased one of them inflatable lawn ornaments? They have one of a skeleton riding a stage coach/herse…very detailed..the skeleton has a cap and top hat and the carriage is super spooky lookin.

oh yeah, for the halloween jukebox: you gotta put SOmebody’s watchin me by Rockwell, and if you can somehow find it…there is a GREAT halloween themed song from wario ware touched on Nintendo DS…its a song about a girl thats a witch and she messes up her spells…if i find it somewhere, i’ll send a link

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 09/08/2007 11:27 PM EDT

Parrothead I’m at the University of South Carolina. I’m actually not in school right now but will return in about a year, but in the meantime I’m still allowed to spin. We’ve got a few profs and such too. Actually, they have some of the best (and longes running) shows on the station.

mandy_Reeves I decided the other day since my birthday’s in Nov. that I’m going to finally break down and get an X-Box 360 around that time for a sort of birthday/Christmas present to myself. I’ve been on the fence about getting that or a PS3 since I’ve always been more of a Playstation guy…but I’m a huge first person shooter fan and it seems like the 360’s kind of got the market on that these days. I’ve never even played any of the Halo games! Man, I’ve been missing out…but hopefully that situation will be remedied soon. Congrats on the cheap Dreamcast…good deal!

Oh, speaking of which, before I go sinking loads of money and time into a 360, I’ve been reading a lot about technical problems and “red rings” and such…does anyone know what that’s all about?

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/08/2007 11:28 PM EDT

A shitoad isn’t quite as much.

A Shitoad seems like the name of a rejected pokemon. Hmmm…seems to be the original name of Croagunk or Toxicroak. The name certainly fits them.

“Shitoad, I choose you!”

anyone else find buying one of these as an irresistible impulse?

Ah, the infamous “Red Ring of Death.” That’s a sign of a fatal hardware error in the XBox 360. There’s nothing you can do to fix it, but you can replace it free of charge as long as it’s under warranty. Microsoft is working on the problem, and they’ve recently extended the warranty.

Ghosted by TB Tabby @ 09/08/2007 11:45 PM EDT

Hey Matt! It’s been a long, long time but we talked a few times on AIM a few years back. Nice to see X-E is looking better than ever and I can’t wait for the annual Halloween Countdown either.

And if you can, go see HATCHET. Kane Hodder is back doing what he does best…bloody mayhem! A great throwback to the 80s slasher flicks that would fit in nicely in your countdown. :)

Ghosted by Paul @ 09/08/2007 11:47 PM EDT

I got my stickers in. Thanks, Matt!!!

Our Target needs to step it up and get its Halloween display out. I went there expecting to buy a string of lights and found school supplies instead. I’m still looking for Game Fuel as well.

Hey Parrothead and DJ D: Just wanted to give special shout-outs to you guys for helping keep college radio alive. I was a DJ at Middle Tennesse State University from 1998-2001, and those were some good damn times.

Ghosted by Commander Awesome @ 09/08/2007 11:51 PM EDT

rusty Let us know if you wake up to find yourself transformed into Tom Hanks.

TB Tabby Thanks for the fill in. So, the ring is an actual part? Is this thing going to catch fire? I’m just sayin’…I’d like to know now.

Paul My plan was to see Hatchet last night but after checking the listings it’s not playing anywhere near here. I hope we get it later though. I haven’t read a single bad review of it yet. Looking forward to Dragon Wars next week though.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/08/2007 11:53 PM EDT

While we’re on the subject of video games, here’s something that should put you in a Halloweeny mood: SILENT HILL 5!

Ghosted by TB Tabby @ 09/08/2007 11:59 PM EDT

The ring is made of four lights surrounding the power switch. When a fatal hardware error occurs, three of them will flash red.

Ghosted by TB Tabby @ 09/09/2007 12:01 AM EDT

Commander Awesome Right on. It is some damn good times, indeed. I’m really spoiled though. We have a policy of not playing anything that’s Top 40 or mainstream (basically anything you can find on any other station), but outside of that I can pretty much do whatever I want. I’ve thought about maybe going into radio at other stations down the road, but I’ll never have the kind of freedom I have now. You can click my name if you want to find out what the show’s all about.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/09/2007 12:04 AM EDT

Do any of you college DJs play any Gogol Bordello on your stations? I have been very dissapointed with my local college radio station, I have yet to hear they play anything by Gogol, who are in my humble opinion, the best band on the face of the earth. :)

Ghosted by crazy_mainer @ 09/09/2007 12:14 AM EDT

The grocery store where I work finally brought out more Halloween stuff today; there’s still some school supplies, but it’s mostly practical college stuff like coat hangers and gigantic pillows shaped like watermelon. The season aisle is small (and shares space with the baking items), but the store nevertheless had some good stuff last year, and I’m anticipating more good stuff once we get the beginning of the school year out of our systems.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/09/2007 12:16 AM EDT

I personally can’t wait until the new Halloween Countdown. I’ve been with X-E for a lot of ‘em, maybe even for all of ‘em… Again, I restate my desire to have this one be called the “Partydown”.

Ghosted by DocDragon @ 09/09/2007 12:28 AM EDT

crazy_mainer I don’t think I’m familiar with them but I wouldn’t be surprised if we had them in our library. You should call up and request them at your station if you haven’t already. We’ve got loads of stuff that I’ve never heard of, but I usually will play it someone requests and it fits into my format.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/09/2007 12:31 AM EDT

i’m probably one of the few fps fans that actually doesn’t like halo, i do like rainbow six and ghost recon on the 360.. i’ll probably be trading it in for a ps3 once the new socom comes out though

i’ve had my 360 since last christmas and never had any problems, plus i think microsoft’s got the warranty up to like 2 years now or something, i went ahead and bought an extended warranty at microcenter though which pretty much means you can get full store credit back for it whenever, which might come in handy when i get my ps3..

Ghosted by nogood @ 09/09/2007 12:46 AM EDT

I think there’s good potential to be up until 4 AM tonight.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/09/2007 12:58 AM EDT

nogood Yeah, see that’s the thing, is I’m really much more of a Playstation guy cause I love my PS2 and I really prefer the Playstation controller over the X-Box controller, but I’m ready to finally upgrade to the next gen. I just think the PS3 has really let me down. I can only think of one game that I know of right now–Resistance: Fall of Man–that I would want to shell out $50 bucks for (or whatever they’re going for). I think I’m going to go ahead and bite the bullet and get a 360 for the time being until I can save up and get a PS3 and hopefully by then they’ll have more games out.

As for fps’s I really want to see what all the hype is about with Halo, being those are my fave types of games and it’s supposed to be at the top of the heap. What problems did you have with it? I tend to lean more toward horror or sci-fi themed stuff, so I haven’t checked out Ghost Recon or any of those, but a good game’s a good game. The last one I played was Black on the PS2. It didn’t have much going for it terms of story or purpose really, but if you just want to run around blow stuff up, it was good for that.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/09/2007 1:00 AM EDT

Happy SNT! Looking forward to yet another awesome Countdown.
I can’t find any showtimes for Hatchet near me. It sounds fun so I definitely want to check it out. Last night I saw Shoot ‘Em Up. I thought it was great. There were a couple of things that fell flat, but at worst it’s a good fix of pulpy Clive-Owen-being-a-badass until Sin City 2 comes out.
