09/04/2007: Right by Night.

There are times when I seriously just space out and think about how much more success I’d find in life if the accepted “active hours” were reversed and people slept by day amd worked by night.

It’s after 2 AM as I write this. I wouldn’t really call myself an insomniac, because I’d sleep all day tomorrow if I could. But I can’t, because that’s when everyone works. I’ve sent all the e-mails I needed to send and did all the little things I needed to do, but that won’t matter if I’m dead asleep at 10 AM and somebody wants to know why I italicized certain words and didn’t offer the same graces to others.

It occurs to me that I’ve been more or less tweaking my professional life for the past several years not so much to work less, but to allow for the maximum number of times that I can stay up all night and not need to be coherent the next day.

It’s pitch black right now, and there are only three audible noises: The keyboard, the hum of the fish tank filter, and an assload of crickets outside. At least, I’m pretty sure that they’re crickets. Do any other bugs sound like ambient sound effects from old Eurythmics songs? I’m pretty positive that only crickets do.

I know I’m not alone in this peculiar ideal; I just wonder why it is this way. And, if I got what I wanted, would I end up wanting to stay awake all day instead? Is this all just some alien form of anthropophobia? I can joke about hating sunlight and do an Oscar-worthy impression of eleven-year-old Kirsten Dunst’s vampire death scream, but maybe the sun ain’t the problem. Maybe you’re the problem. You, you awake people. Sleep while I move. Let’s switch off.

But Ashley, the Creature from the Black Lagoon is friend not foe.

Does anybody else think the skull looks like that of Tommy Pickles?

The “Creature” looks like he might be a valentine sticker. The sticker is shaped like a heart without the point part at the bottom.

Either that or an upside-down butt. You make the call.

And the Creature from the Black Lagoon is in a pretty heart, just asking to be loved. C’mon Ashley, accept his love…

Speaking of monsters. I went to see the new Halloween this weekend. I was actually quite impressed and I’m a GIANT fan of the original. Anyone else caught this yet?

I’ll never understand the obsession with deep-frying anything and everything. Just…eww.

I blame my night owl tendancies on my mother, who is also a night owl and thus kept me up as late as possible when I was a baby so that I would sleep in (and let her sleep in) on the weekends.

My sleep habits are terrible. On a typical day I get around 12 hours of sleep and yet I’m still exhausted until about 11 pm when my energy peaks and I start wanting to clean the house or bake or start projects that sometimes go on until the wee hours of the morning. Luckily, I have a job that starts at noon and goes until 9 pm, so I can fit my sleep schedule around that, but my fiance wants to go to bed at 11:30 (he has to be up at 5:30) so I don’t get to do all those projects I want until the weekend. Hooray for run-on sentences!

Anyway, we spent the weekend visiting the fiance’s family and helping them prepare and execute his mother’s wedding. We left Oklahoma on a sultry summer Thursday and come back five days later to almost full-on autumn! Temperatures in the lower 70s, overcast skies and drizzle! Minus another 10 degrees or so and I’ll be absolutely delirious with joy!

Speaking of Halloween, my fiance went to Wal-Mart and brought me back a bag of mellowcreme pumpkins…. Heaven!

Hey Matt, tried to e-mail you a suggestion for your Halloween BlogfesT, but for some reason I couldn’t get it out…so I’ll do it here…..READY……Orange Halloween Eggnog. If u get this abomination up north, you have to try it and report, cause, not only is it nasty, it does not taste like “EGGNOG”. Trust me you’ll be happy and hurt at the same time.

fistpittingnork: I just checked and Bobby and Mace showed up. Last night, after both of your messages, Bobby didn’t show and neither did Butthead. I can see their face in the message itself, but they didn’t appear in the Mii Channel. But again, like I said earlier, today Bobby and Mace did appear. So whatever you did worked.

Working nights is grand, but definitely work it where you can either theoretically go do any of your shopping right when you get off work, or right before you have to go to work. If you don’t, you are screwed till the weekend.

I’m working 10pm-6am. I’ll admit it, I’m a sloth when I wake up and HATE jumping in the shower as soon as my feet hit the floor. So, everything here closes at 9, but I can’t seem to get myself out the door before 9:30. Nothing opens until 9 or 10am, and by then, I’m ready to sleep. So yeah, it sucks in that regard.

I just had 9 days off for vacation, and it all sucked so bad because I tried to flip my sleeping pattern, then get back on it. Don’t ever do that… I’ve learned my lesson.

Oh great, when I actually go to sleep a little “early” (aka, before 2) I miss an entire blog!

Yes, I too am a Night Owl, and I wish the world was the same way. School starts for me tomorrow…in the daytime! Grr. Ironically, I hate the concept of night classes and prefer classes during the day, and I prefer working the evening shift.

Much like you guys, I’m amongst the Night Owls. Originally it was ‘cuz one of the cable channels was airing a bunch of awesome cartoons from the late 80s/dawn of the 90s, then it was to get unfettered time on the internet… Now… I’m not all that sure WHY I do it, but I just do. Interestingly enough, I don’t like working the night shift… I’d rather work when the buses are running.

I’ve always liked to think that I’d have plenty of time to sleep. . . when I’m dead.

For now, awake it is! I’ve learned to balance work, university, and fun on four hours a night.

I am also a creature of the night. I am so glad that so many of you share this with me. :)

the human body is for some incredibly strange reason programmed to go by a 25 hour day, if we did not have the sun to go by we would be going on 25 hour days, but because the sun is there it would totally screw over so many people to have days part in sun and part in dark. gah to the natural human system

listening to my shih tzu pup make little woof noises in her sleep

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 09/06/2007 2:14 AM EDT

Chalk up another one. Though these days I’ve been going to bed a little earlier, since I’m working now during the day. I know during high school though, I always found myself up until at least past midnight, usually.

In any case, yeah Rainbowfeet, this is pretty sweet.

I bid you velcome, my cheeldren of the night…

I don’t know if I would describe cicadas as sounding like synth riffs. More like a dentist’s drill routed through a synthesizer. Matt, was that neat picture with clouds over the moon taken from outside your house? Because I noticed the trees were bare, and I obviously don’t think you’ll be seeing that for another few months.

Fuckin’ eh. I despise “morning people” who love going to sleep early so they can get up at 6:45. If the sun is not either absent from the sky or very high in it, I don’t really want to be up.

Ghosted by Magic Flyin' Lemur @ 09/08/2007 3:49 AM EDT

Almost everyone I work with is quite a bit older than I am and they like getting up at the crack of dawn, being in to work by 6:30 or 7. I am not supposed to be in any later than 8:30 which they consider “comin’ in late” or “workin’ the late shift.”

They always say I just need to “get used to getting up early” (and like it!)… I am 27 years old and I have had to get up early for about 21 of those years… if I was going to get used to it I think I might have done that by now. I think some people are just not meant to be morning people.

Wow, that’s an eye-catching picture, Matt. Take it yourself?
