09/01/2007: Mountain Dew “Game Fuel” Super Soda.
Okay, I think I’m finally starting to feel Halloweeny. Work has been nuts, but I’m over the hump, and I can finally start dedicating every facet of my being to the continued search for fun-sized Snickers in bat-adorned bags and other things that go bump in the night. In a way, I’m almost happy that August was as lifesucking and horrible as it was, as at least I didn’t get to blow my Halloween wad early like I usually do.
A few trips to various department stores tonight confirms that I haven’t missed too much. We’re still riding the cusp of all the impromptu “back to school” setups, which over the course of the next few weeks will transform into shrines to ghouls and goblins and sound-activated dancing Draculas. Most of the stores around here have started putting out a few things, but the real loot is yet to come.
I guess now is as good of a time as any to make my annual plea for X-E Halloween Countdown donations. If you think you have something I might be able to use for this year’s feature, drop me a line. Old Halloween-themed commercials or taped-from-television sitcom episodes are always a plus. Pretty much everything is fair game so long as it seems like something I can write an entire Countdown entry around. (If it isn’t something I think I can write about, I won’t make you waste your time sending it!) Thanks in advance.
Now, onto soda!
Despite innumerable television commercials featuring extremist athletes cooling off with Mountain Dew, the beverage could be more correctly pointed to as a “gamer’s drink.” I haven’t been a terribly enthusiastic video game player since my early teens, but if the stories are to be believed, Mountain Dew is gobbled up by the gallon by millions of mouse-sliding maniacs pulling all-nighters with their MMORPG buddies. Essentially, it’s used as cold, fruity coffee.
Also, “MMORPG” sounds like something Bossk would say if he felt cheeky.

New Mountain Dew “Game Fuel” exploits this phenomenon. It’s a new (and limited edition) flavor in celebration of
Halo 3, which takes all the caffeine and ambiance of original Mountain Dew and makes it taste like something closer to a 7-11 Slurpee. The label sums up the flavor: It’s Mountain Dew with a splash of cherry.
I can’t come up with too firm of a critique, but I think I like it. The cherry isn’t as overpowering as the drink’s color suggests, meaning that you can down a 20-ounce bottle without getting that terrible stomach ache that usually comes with drinking cherry stuff. The price we pay for that red berry. Well, not this time my friends.
Actually, you know those little plastic juice jugs? The ones that are sometimes shaped like semi-clear barrels? We called them “quarter drinks” around these parts. “Game Fuel” is kind of like a carbonated version of the red ones.
I’ve read a couple of reviews from the drink’s target audience, and a few were penned by annoyed gamers who didn’t want to be “told” what to drink or pigeonholed as freaky deaky Mountain Dew-obsessed wackos. Ah, shaddup, ya snoots. You do realize that things like “Game Fuel” are what keeps the rest of us from getting a third rendition of Mountain Dew Pitch Black, right? If you can’t handle the label, pass the poi Muhallo.

What’s the difference between this and Code Red?

The label.

This is citrus cherry, whereas Code Red is just cherry. Having more words in the flavor name, this must be better!…or something like that.

Ragnarok @ 09/01/2007 12:37 PM EDT
I don’t really drink Code Red (or any other Dew), but I think Game Fuel is supposed to be less cherryish than Code Red.

I really had not realized that Game Fuel would prevent a Pitch Black…
God damn it. Pitch Black is the only incarnation of that Hellish hillbilly soda I can stand!

Well, I’m kind of lying since they’d bring back Pitch Black if only more than the five of us wanted them to. :/ God dammit, I want Pitch Black.

Happy September 1st! I’m rocking college game day after I get back from my trip with celebratory cider beer.
Game Fuel, huh? Do gamers really need that much fuel? Just kidding.

From personal experience, I can say that Bawls is preferred to Mountain Dew…
We just love chugging our Bawls! (Ha ha! Gay joke.)

I tried this yesterday, and bought two bottles in case I enjoyed it immensly. I also made the Code Red association, but I liked it alot more because it wasn’t a cherry overload like Code. Granted I knew I was going to like it, you can re-make Pepsi Blue and call it Mountain Dew something and I’ll manage to enjoy it the second time around (I heard they were doing something like that). I just wished that they made Baha Blast in a bottle for a limited time.
Ahaha, Ben, I used to go to a online computer gaming place, and literally every other sentence someone said took advantage of the Bawls/Balls pun.

Brett @ 09/01/2007 1:00 PM EDT
Well, I spent all morning playing a video game, I’m sitting here with a can of Gamer Fuel on my desk, and I’ve got a four-pack of Bawls in my fridge.
Fortunately, I’m going to spend the afternoon baking my own bread to avoid becoming a complete stereotype.

Jedoc @ 09/01/2007 1:14 PM EDT
I still have like 6 12 packs of original pitch black and a couple 20 oz bottles that havent left the fridge for a couple years. I didn’t like the sour version, so hopefully they’ll bring back the original. As far as cherry drinks go, I tend to avoid them since they make me look like I’m wearing lipstick
Does that taste like MD Red Code???
It looks like that…’xcept for the guy on the armour

Gamers are a unique breed, now aren’t they?
I have a buddy who, on more the one occasion, has punched holes into his (literal holes, fist sized) wall after being killed in Halo 2.
You’d think they just dropped the Hiroshima bomb onto his grandmother’s house.
Oh, and he chugs “the Dew” like a motherfucker.

Moving off the gamer topic - I’m making pumpkin beer this year!
It will probably be the most vile alcoholic beverage, considering I’ve never brewed anything before. . . but oh well.

I’m not a regular Dew drinker, either. My brother (Hoverbored, around theser parts) loves Code Red, though.
A little off-subject, but it’s been incredibly hot here in SoCal. Over the past four or five days, we’ve had temperatures exceeding 105 degrees. My only plan for today is to (finally) see Transformers at the last theater in the area still showing it.

Hello everybody,
It’s true I’m a fan of Code Red. I might try this new game fuel if I can find it at a local store. A mix of citrus and cherry sounds like it might not taste so good to me. But, I’ll try it anyway if I can.

Posted by
Hoverbored @ 09/01/2007 2:16 PM EDT
I said it before, but I’ll recap since it’s on topic now…as much as I wanted to love this stuff, I couldn’t. I kept drinking it, but I couldn’t get past the aftertaste. I previously referred to it as a cross between Orange Alka-Seltzer Cold/liquified Dramamine and I stand by that review. I guess I’m just not that into citrus.

While, I’m not a “hardcore” gamer who will drink this if I need energy but it isn’t that bad. I’ll just drink it because I’m thirsty. I also just don’t like Halo or the Xbox. Although, playing the Wii would/will/may/can make you feel actually tired. And it’s more fun. Or at least I think so.

I guess this would be the end of the Summer Megaparty, being Labor Day weekend and September and all. It had a good run- but I’m really lookin’ forward to the Halloween Countdown. The tips of some trees over here have just started to turn. I can’t wait!
Oh, and I think those juice barrels can be bought in crates labeled “Teenies” but I can’t confirm this as a Google search only turns up porn.
I tried that stuff the other day and although it wasn’t too bad it wasn’t too good either. I was able to get my hands on some Live Wire though!
I’m sad that Summer is coming to a close. So many loves half love, so many inventions half-invented…
No more Megaparties…And I hope Matt is better now and ready to crank out more blogs & articles…as well as his day job.
It tastes like better orange soda t’me. And this is coming from someone who hates both Mountain Dew and orange soda. But I was able to keep this down.
I admit I quested for this drink simply because Master Chief was showcased on it in all his glory. Fangirlism at it’s worst.
I did’nt really mind the Gamer Fuel flavor…and it does taste like those little jug drinks Matt.
SO, i have a bit of an emergency on my hands and had to put my wii and games up for sale on Craigslist.
The Halloween store is up in my area, it opened today. I guess Dunkin Donuts is also getting in the Halloween spirit a little early this year as well…considering my bagel this morning had some cobwebs on the bottom it…for real…i almost puked, and got a snotty attitude from teh manager and she begrudgingly gave me back my money. I will call the health department Tuesday on them.

I think someone at the Dew plant mistakenly mixed Code Red with Live Wire and they decided to sell it instead of wasting it.

speaking of the bawls thing, i did not realize that there was an energy drink by that name, and i work at officemax in ohio….some kids came in one day asking me if i had balls (or bawls i guess is what they meant) and i was dumbfounded…..being that i have neither penis nor balls. it did allow for funny balls banter though

Well, that was a bit of a shock. Apparently OU is hosting a football (”armoured wankball” to our non-American posters) game in about three hours. And since my apartment is about three blocks from the stadium, I just stepped out the door to check the mail and found fucking Woodstock outside. There are cars parked on my lawn and people barbecuing in the vacant lot across the street. And now I can’t move my car until tomorrow, or else I’ll end up parking it somewhere in Kansas when I get back.
This town is going to take some adjustment, I see.

I’m very happy with some of the new gadgets for the ‘we’en at Wal-Mart this year. I am going to get one of the Sprit Balls, maybe the swami one. He makes dire predictions. There’s a hilarious air-blown costume of a fat chick in a french bikini that I expect to see Hallowe’en night. Only Commies and Daleks want to get rid of All Hallows’ Eve.

For anyone wanting more (or a third) incarnation of Pitch Black, simply take a trip to South Korea. They have a version of Mountain Dew called “Wild Black”, which is like Pitch Black 2 but slightly less sweet.

I absolutely LOVE this shit, and I couldn’t care less about Halo or any of that crap. It’s just a good new soda flavor, which I can always get behind!
Of course it’s limited edition. Most flavors I like are. Pepsi Blue R.I.P.

Antenna Villain @ 09/01/2007 5:09 PM EDT
I liked Gamer Fuel, but it’s not something I would go out of my way to drink again.
Anyway, I just got back from the Halloween remake so here’s my pseudo-review. If you want a creepy and suspenseful movie, stick with the original. If you want a bloody, sexy, sometimes campy, but otherwise pretty fun slasher with with a cameo appearence by one of the Monkees, see the remake. The one thing I do wish they did differently was change the traditional “William Shatner” mask with one of the paper ones he makes because those things are VERY creepy.

Shuanfu @ 09/01/2007 5:29 PM EDT
Alright, that settles it… if it tastes like the “red flavor” from those little plastic jugs, I am buying a case. I used to love those things when I was a kid. They really hit the spot when you were a dime short for a can of Sprite or Coke from the nearest soda machine. Of course you had to drink it warm while walking back from the store, but a warm jug of knock-off kool-aid is still better than raiding the water hose in a stranger’s backyard.
7: You are brewing your own beer this year? That is awesome. I’ve been toying with the idea for a few years now. I’ve checked out a lot of the home brewing kits and just haven’t been motivated enough to give it a go… yet. Definitely let us (and me!) know how it turns out.
Now on the subject of gaming. I definitely don’t consider myself a hardcore gamer by any stretch, but for a year or so after the Xbox 360 first came out I sure spent money like one. Does anyone else find it a bit annoying that when you are a kid, and have all the time and patience in the world to game for hours a day, you inevitably lack the money to satisfy your cravings. Now that I am older and have (had) the money to buy pretty much any game that comes out that I am interested in, I now lack the motivation to actually play them for more than a day or two. I can’t count the number of 360 games that I’ve purchased with the best of intentions only to rediscover it, six months later, and realize I had probably spent six hours total with it. I wish I could box them up and send them in the Delorean back to my 13-year-old self.

Little Hugs was the brand name for those abominable drinks here. BTW, does everybody on XE have a Wii? I just snagged one for my wife last week and am getting addicted to it, especially boxing. Can someone hook a brutha up with the Mii code for Matt and the others? I know its in a thread somewhere.
Secondary question: Is Wii Play worth it? I want another controller and game, seems like a good deal.

Posted by
Terror Claws Cole @ 09/01/2007 5:38 PM EDT
If your getting another controller anyway, then yeah it’s worth it…it’s only a few bucks more.

Posted by
Shuanfu @ 09/01/2007 5:41 PM EDT
Magic Toy- That’s why I only bother with stuff like Wii Sports,Mario Kart,or a fighing game. If I have x amount of time in a day to spend on a game,I’d rather have a couple races,a couple games of baseball,or a couple fights than get a tiny bit farther in an epic story I may complete sometime next year. I’d rather spend free time having fun than reading gamefaqs.
Oh,I almost forgot old school beat em ups. I spent about an hour on Streets of Rage 2 this morning.

Terror Claws- My code is 8363 4863 4726 3818.
And yes,go ahead and buy Wii Play, considering it’s only 10 bucks more than just buying a controller by itself. It is a pretty fun game, especially the updated version of the old “Combat” game from Atari 2600.

Posted by
Kid Nicky @ 09/01/2007 6:04 PM EDT
Kid Nicky: Yeah, very true. I have a Wii and have found myself playing it quite a bit over the past few months. Especially since my lady loves it too and she’ll make me bowl with her from time-to-time (and kick my ass as well). I am in love with the VC. I downloaded Super Metroid and Super C over the past couple of weeks. You can’t beat it. I also love the Xbox Live Arcade for those same reasons. Geometry Wars is visual crack.
Terror Claws Cole: I second Shuanfu’s opinion that Wii Play is worth buying if you are getting a second controller. I haven’t spent too much time with it, but considering you are ultimately buying it for ten bucks it is worth it.
Also here is my Wii Number: 2280 9482 9389 6950
I would appreciate those with Wiis either reposting theirs (if willing), or maybe a link to the old articles that have them already? My Wii is ronery.

As someone who works out a lot, I laughed hard the first time I saw this thing. GAMER FUEL GIVES YOU THE ENERGY YOU NEED TO…SIT DOWN.
Little Hugs? Hmmm, don’t know why I forgot the name … perhaps the taste was so traumatic that my mind blocked it out until now.

Posted by

The local Big Lots store sells the little hugs drinks from time to time…mostly though during the summer, places like CVS Rite Aid Walgreens etc…sell em. I favored the orange and cherry and grape my self….i cant remember what I felt about the blue kind. Oh yeah, Pathmark brand fruit punch soda tastes EXACTLY like Game Fuel. I’m gonna conduct an experiment perhaps tommorow. I will post my findings herein.

MAN, I wish MD Pitch Black would be brought back! But, you know, if there turned out to be a huge demand for it, all we would get would be something that is close to the original, but not quite. This already has a precedent. Don’t forget the whole Bring Back Surge campaign, followed by Coke’s hinting at a Surge-like drink coming to stores, followed by Vault, which is definitely not Surge.
I’d love to be wrong on this one, but I’m not optmistic.
Oh, and the Little Hugs…I am reminded of this story. A teacher colleague of mine had this kid in his class a couple of years ago. The boy was really skinny and pale, like Wendell on “The Simpsons.” The teacher shared some insight on why the boy might have been so sickly looking. This is as direct of a quote as I can reproduce: “All he brings for lunch is a half of a sandwich, a bag of Cheetos, and one of those…like…fake little like juice things.”

I too wish Pitch Black would come back. And I mean the original, not the “sour” version from two years ago. I am afraid we will never see it again
That being said, I like the Game Fuel. I think the picture above is a little misleading because in person it looks much more like Live Wire then the Code Red looking stuff above. It’s more of a flourescent orange color. The taste is, as described above, not as cherry-ish as Code Red. It almost approaches a Taco Bell Baja Blast taste, which is great since that will never be in stores.

There’s very few sodas with cherry that do not remind me of cough syrup. Mostly I can only drink cherry coke. I used to down Mt. Dew in obscene amounts, but it’s been awhile since I did that. Magic Toy, you might as well be reading my mind. I finally have enough money to buy the games I want, and almost no time to play them. Lately I’ve been leaving for work at 5:15 am and getting home at about 9:00 pm. That’s just enough time to get some fast food, shower and sleep. Due to my schedule, I have a four day weekend this week, THANK GOD. I only brought a little work home with me, and I’ll do that while watching Dirty Jobs. That show reminds me that being salaried and getting little or no overtime pay still isn’t so bad.
The whole “gamer fuel” thing puzzles me. If you’re so bored that you need a bunch of caffeine to stay awake, why are you playing? If you’re so tired that you can’t stay awake, why not play the next day?
The really funny thing for me about the whole “no time to game” thing is that I spend almost all my game time playing Hearts on XBox Live. I paid a bunch of money for this wireless steering wheel, but I barely use it. I truly suck at Forza 2.
BTW, my gamertag on XBox Live is Captain Spaz307. My Friends list is almost empty, and it’s kind of pathetic. Send me an invite. Please?
I have a Wii, but I have no idea what my code is, or how to add friends or anything. I basically use the Wii to check the temperature at the South Pole and play Super Mario Brothers 2. I’ll probably buy Metroid- and barely play it. I wonder if my employer would let me take a leave of absence to catch up on my games?

I’m absolutely digging the Halo themed Gamer Fuel - I still stick with my assertation that it tastes like a liquified gummi bear with the MD zing.
Magic Toy: I very rarely pay full price for a game. For some reason, I just refuse to shell out $50 for a game that is likely to be $19.99 in a few short months. However, there have been a couple of exceptions - primarily Zelda and Halo themed releases.
Spaz307 - I plan on sending you a friend request. My user name is jjwspider.

jjwspider I agree with you. It’s downright impossible for me to buy a game for a full 50 dollars. It’s really a problem considering I really want Super Mario Strikers, but I can’t bring it out in me to pay full price. Even though it probably it won’t depreciate as fast as most games (Madden 07 and Tony Hawk Project 8 already cost 17.99 at my Gamestop) I just can’t do it. However I do plan on purchasing RE4 for Wii. 30 bucks is such a steal for that game. And of course I’ll shell out for the must-have games that I’ll be playing for the next 5 or so years, GTAIV, Brawl, Galaxy, are pretty much the only ones I can think of.

New XBox Live friends! Yay!
Magic Toy and jjwspider, I’m comparing our games and trying to figure out if we have any multiplayer games in common.
Also, Ice CUCUMBER soda? Sounds horribly disgusting.

By the way, I’ve added everyone who posted their Wii -Code in this thread.

Tonight the lady and I made homemade salsa… for the first time ever. It turned out, well, OK, but nothing special. I guess the trick is to keep making it and tweaking it a bit each time so that eventually you end up with something you like a lot.
Has anyone else found that you definitely cannot buy any decent salsa from a jar in the store? Not saying that should surprise anyone. It is funny, five years ago I would have never eaten salsa as I wasn’t a huge fan of onions or raw tomatoes. Silly I know. Eventually I learned to love the salsa at one particular restaurant. For a few years we went there at least once a week and really got to know the staff. Suddenly the restaurant closed. I was left without my beloved salsa. It is my goal to perfect my own recipe, and with God as my witness, I shall do it. Either that or find a way to contact the old owner of the place that closed and try to buy the recipe from him. Hey, what is he doing with it now?
Tommy: Once, many years ago, I ate part of a funnel cake and for whatever reason I felt like I couldn’t get the greasy/oily taste out of my mouth for days. I brushed my teeth like a fiend and used that old, burning, horrible Listerine - nothing worked. Ever since then I gag at the thought of a funnel cake. I look at it… I know I should like it… but I’ll be damned if I can’t eat one. Sort of like when I was six or seven and I got the flu almost immediately after eating some Pop Tarts… I haven’t had any since to this day. Damn you classically-condition taste aversion. Am I no more intelligent than a dog? Apparently not.

I’ve got a PS2 right now and am thinking about investing in a next gen console, but don’t know which way to go. The Wii’s not really my speed, although i would like to play one sometime.
I really dig more conventional controllers and am kind of picky about it. Matter of fact, that’s the core of my delima. Obviously the 360’s got a lot more cool games right now and I know all the arguments against the PS3, but I just really prefer the Playstation controllers over the X-Box ones. I don’t like that left analog stick being way up on top. It’s all asymmetrical and such. Just doesn’t feel right. Plus, I’m a big Resident Evil fan….BUT…X-Box has sooo many more cool games than PS3. Should I go for it now with the 360 or wait till the PS3 finally catches up and Resident Evil 5 comes out?
Any advice?

Wow, I just spent 15 bucks at Party City (bag of candy corn, makeup kit, latex, and halloween pencil), and I feel great. Only a matter of time until I’m flipping through Dracula TI calculator commercials (anyone remember that?) and Halloween II. Ah… *ponders about heaven*

How to make home made Pitch Black:
Get a 2 liter bottle of Mt Dew. Also, get one of those little packets of grape Kool-Aid (sugar-free, definitely). Pour the packet into the bottle, and QUICKLY put the cap back on a tight as you can, as it’ll fizz like holy hell.
Once the carbonation “equalizes,” or whatever, you’ll have a reasonable facsimile of Pitch Black. It’s not perfect, but it’s what I’ve made do with.

Didn’t we already do the Wii code swap thing? I think I have a group of X-E people that I added, but only like two or three added me in return….
and I was reminded of something tonight: never play video games with my cousin. You know those people that don’t want to learn how to play a game but think they should be amazing at a game right away? That’s him. And if he’s not winning he gets pissed and starts to yell things like “there you go, not telling me all the tricks” or “I could win if I knew all the tricks”… I was reminded that some people never grow up. He’s also the kind of gamer that will only play games he can win. If he looses more than a few times he will never play again. Great example of this: he would only want to play Mario Kart all the time because he sat at his house and played for DAYS straight, memorizing all the ‘tricks’ and tracks. Then when you play him, he tries to make you feel like shit because he wins so much and if he starts to loose the ‘AI’ is working against him. But put Smash Bros. in, he looses once, and quits for the night. So fucking annoying….

DJ,
Yeah, good times. Halloween is really the only holiday where candy and violence really mix.
Regarding the XBox vs. PS3, I would say PS3. Resident Evil 5 looks really promising, and now that it’s being held back until 2008, you have plenty of time to pinch your pennies.
But if you’re feeling extra dick-ish, I’d say buy a 360 and twist a few arms around Christmas, rack in the dough, and buy a PS3 then.
As for the 360 games, they’re all for really serious gamers. The kind that get you sucked in and don’t let go until you’ve got every single goddamn extra point in the entire game. PS3 looks like the kind that are easy to pick up and easy to put down.
But Live…
Hard decision. I’d also vote PS3 on Blu-Ray (even though it seems to be losing the HD DVD battle *Beta vs. VHS all over again*).

Cotter @ 09/02/2007 1:31 AM EDT
DJ: Not trying to sway you… as I obviously have no real interest in the matter… but RE5 is coming out for the Xbox 360 as well. I have the HD trailer on my hard drive as I type this.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/805/805932p1.html
I’ve had a PSX, PS2, Xbox, and now an Xbox 360. I have absolutely loved the 360 experience so far. I do plan on buying a PS3 when the time is right. I need to scrounge up some more money, find a new job, and wait until some better games come out - but it is inevitable. I can tell you that I am very comfortable waiting right now with my 360.

Posted by
Magic Toy @ 09/02/2007 1:39 AM EDT
RE5 for 360 you say?
I don’t know, if you did get a 360, I’d say buy an elite. I have a friend who went 360-less the entire summer because he got 2 replacements and they both had the ring of light problem which he originally sent his to get fixed for. I have yet to hear horror stories about the PS3 being made out of urine or things like that.
I do have to say, however, that the PS3 right now is at the bottom of the next gen gaming race. I have faith in it, however. It will prevail. Right when GTA IV comes out, I think new games are going to present themselves to the PS3 and pretty soon (more) PS3 based games will be coming out.

Cotter @ 09/02/2007 1:45 AM EDT
Cotter Gotta say, that does sound like a descent plan. I’m really tempted to get my hands on both of them. I think I have the potential to be a moderately hardcore gamer, although I don’t really have a huge desire to do the online thing. These days I’m just so pressed for time if I’m going to take the time to sit down and play for a few hours, I want to get the best out of it, and the PS2 graphics are starting to look pretty weak compared to some of the next gen stuff I’ve seen.
I’m with you on the Blu-Ray thing. I used to work in the home theatre department at Best Buy and we had a TV with a Blu-Ray player on display and as far as I’m concerned it blows regular HD out of the water.

Posted by
Joker @ 09/02/2007 1:50 AM EDT
Yeah, what it really comes down to is taste. Would you rather take the mainstream console that’s already racking up with games and a good online system, or would you rather take the system with considerably better graphics, a built in Blu-Ray (somewhere around a $1,000 value) and some great games lining up for it.
I’m pretty bad at saving up money so I’m waiting for Christmas and the like, but I’m not really sure myself. I have a Gamecube and a PS2 and I’ve never owned an XBOX. It’ll probably be easier to make the decision in a few months.

Posted by
Cotter @ 09/02/2007 1:56 AM EDT
Yeah, I guess I have been somewhat lucky when it comes to the whole red ring of death. My 360 was manufactured in October/November of 2005 (launch) and I have had no hiccups yet. I have heard that the older models all have the same problems and that it might be inevitable. Time will tell.
When it comes to buying a 360 it might be wiser to wait a couple of months anyway until they start putting in the newer processor that runs cooler. I don’t know enough about it to have a truly educated opinion, but you can research it ad nauseum if you desire.
Really, I don’t know what to tell you. PS3 vs. 360? No one knows the answer right now. The 360 is currently the stronger overall system but time could change all of that.
I’d say get both systems, if that is a realistic option. Grab the 360 now to enjoy games like Dead Rising, Gears of War, BioShock, etc… then grab a PS3 when games like Metal Gear and Final Fantasy start hitting the shelves.
BTW, you really noticed a difference between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD when viewed on the same set? Not saying that HD-DVD has a good chance to beat Blu-Ray, long term or anything. But I thought both were basically equally stunning. I guess I really do need to schedule another visit with the ol’ eye doc. It has been a while.

Right, so this is my last post and then I gotta split. Thanks for all the advice and don’t apologize for swaying…I asked for swaying and swaying is what I got. Yeah, I think with my fundification situation gets a little better I might go ahead and spring for an X-Box 360 just to get a good next gen fix. Then, if the PS3 doesn’t get any better in the next year, I won’t feel so bad for making the wrong choice. If it turns out to be super kickass, well, there’s always that second job. I guess I’ll just have to deal with that wonky X-Box controller.
Oh, and got a question for anyone who can answer it (and just so you know, I’m signing off after I post this so I won’t be around to get a response): A few weeks ago, I found I was unable to get access to the message boards here on my home computer. Whenever I try to click on any link on the site I get a 403 Error page saying that I’m not authorized to view the page and something about not having the right credentials (credentials?). However, I don’t have this problem with anyone else’s computer, just mine at home..and no other website gives me this. Btw, I’m at my cousin’s house as I type this. If anybody knows how I can fix this I would REALLY appreciate any help. You can click on my name below and contact me through MySpace that way, or just drop me a line w/ e-mail: dswood77@gmail.com
Sorry for the side note, but I was really digging the occasional SNT and after work chat and now I can’t unless I happen to be at someone else’s computer. Thanks loads and goodnight everybody. Later!

I just noticed the statement that the PS3 has considerable better graphics that the 360. Is that really true?
Heh, I just deleted the sentences that I just typed because I don’t want to turn this into joystiq.com… but I don’t think it is right to say the PS3 has considerably better graphics than the 360.
I suppose anything is feasibly possible in the future, but that sure hasn’t happened yet.

Did this only happen yesterday? Because I know there was some time where Matt was closing off different parts of the site to update and things were a little hectic for a while as he updated the main page. Should be ok now.
If not, try deleting your cookies and other private data, etc. Maybe reinstall whatever browser you’re using or install another.

Magic,
I was probably wrong to say it had considerably better graphics. The conclusion Gamespot made was the hardware was able to perform better and produce crisper images and hand much more detailed skins and models. They say by next year developers will learn to push the PS3 to it’s limits and by then the difference will be easily seen.

Posted by
Cotter @ 09/02/2007 2:19 AM EDT
Yeah, that is completely possible. I have read the same thing as well. Honestly, as I’ve said before, it is hard for me to have a truly educated opinion about any of this stuff as I am not in the industry, don’t understand all the technical-speak (for the most part), and can only refer to what I’ve seen myself on my (and my friend’s) HDTVs.
I can’t wait for the day when I have my PS3 fired up alongside my (hopefully still-functioning) 360.
I have loved my experience with Xbox Live so far… but I have to admit I am more than intrigued by PS3’s “Home” and the possibilities it has.
Honestly this is a great time to be a gamer. We have three gaming systems, not all of which offer the same thing, all doing fairly well in the market. We won’t have one runaway leader this generation (at least for a few years, at worst) which *fingers crossed* should lead to some healthy competition and innovation.

Posted by
Magic Toy @ 09/02/2007 2:27 AM EDT
Every system has had a learning curve, you can see it clearly, in almost any generation, the later games released always look miles ahead of the launch releases in terms of graphics.

I don’t have an internet connection for my Wii right now or I’d add everybody.
I ended up going to Best Buy and they had DVDs on the cheap. I got Hot Fuzz, From Hell and the 15th anniversary Reservoir Dogs set that comes in a little gas can for 30 bucks. I’m going to save From Hell for a spooky night once it’s cooled off. If only they’d had the Dexter DVDs, I’d have something scary more suited to the temperature. I thought about picking up Carnival Games but I hate paying full price for games too. Has anybody played it, is it any good?

Of course gamers don’t want to be labeled. If they’re seen drinking this crap, it might confirm that they are indeed awkwardly inept in the social department and people will know to not bother interacting with them. XD Ah, I jest. Stereotypes are just too much fun to play with.

Squee- I actually love Carnival Games, but your mileage may vary. The presentation is a little more “budget” than, say,a Nintendo-published game, but it is fun. Skee-Ball,water-gun-in-clown’s-mouth,balloon darts, and one or two others are great little games, and the other ones are all fun for at least a couple tries. You win funny prizes like dolls and things (no Jetfire glass unfortunately) and stuff for your character to wear, like clown shoes or jester hats. You also unlock some harder games by scoring well. I’d say the golf game was the only one I didn’t like, and that’s not a bad ratio.

Debate about the PS3 and 360 is an internet argument that is best left for “whichever system turns your crank”… I had a PS2 and Xbox and clearly the Xbox was better hardware but PS2 ruled it because it was out first and that was the argument back then “we have more games …” and now the Sony club says “who cares about games, we have the better system…”..
If you are an adult and have the money, buy one and then the other :P… Got the 360 here now and waiting for a really nice price drop for the PS3 before I can justify it to my wife, although my wife and daughter want a Wii for X-mas…

It’s not the most practical advice, I admit, but I would try to find someone with a 360 and someone with a PS3, go over to their houses and try the consoles, go back home and see which one you can’t stop thinking about playing again. That’s the console for you. Since I truly believe that all three consoles are geared toward different kinds of gamers, which one to buy is a personal decision. I’m not a hardcore gamer by any means, but a friend lent my husband his 360 for a while and I couldn’t believe how much fun I had with it. I expected all the games to be the kind that only a true gamer could enjoy (lots of complicated button combinations, games that require you to devote hours at a time), but I was pleasantly surprised. I fell in love with PGR3. If we had plenty of disposable income, I’d buy a 360 in a heartbeat (or at least in time for PGR4.)

Seriously, though. Hands up. Who among us has ever used the other side of the cheese grater? You know, the one with all the sharp little zit-things, for grating cinnamon or kumquats or whatever the hell it’s for?
So basically, all they’re there for is to dig into your palm and ruin your grip when you’re trying to grate the cheese directly onto the chips. I know there’s a handle on top, but that’s only useful if you’re grating directly onto a flat surface, such as another plate. I’m a busy man with no dishwasher. I can’t be getting cheddar residue all over plates for no reason.
What I’d like to see is a cheesegrater with the traditional four-sided shape, but with only one grating surface. The other three can have an ergonomic grip made from textured rubber. Like you get on the expensive razors with all the blades. Then we’d have a cheese-mangling machine.
You know what? We can even keep that long narrow slot for carving off thin sheets of cheese. We can put it under the thumb rest. See, I’m not unreasonable.

Game Fuel tastes as if they took Mountain Dew, Code Red, and Livewire, and accidentally spilled them all together, and then marketed it.
And speaking of Marketing…instead of making a new Mountain Dew for Halo 3, they should have made this new Mountain Dew for Transformers. It could be “Mountain Dew: Autobot Blast”.

We actually went there today, Manimal. (I got the skeleton candies you e-mailed me about.) I was tempted to buy some of those nice ceramic light-up Halloween houses/statues, but decided to hold off lest it seem that I was enjoying my stay at Michaels.

I tried this a couple weeks ago and actually found it to be pretty good. I’m a huge LiveWire fan, and always gain a couple pounds every summer indulging in the orange treat instead of my regular Coke Zero. I also liked Pitch Black, but I am not a fan of Code Red. Blech.

I love ya, Matt, but you are WRONG. WRONG WRONG WRONG. This stuff is disgusting. It has a pleasant enough taste, but the aftertaste is so offensive that it completely ruins the drink. It tastes as if people dipped their feet in the mixing vats or something. Just… foul.
Holy shit, I went to Michaels too. Is that bad when three grown men ended up at Michaels only to write about it on a common comment post? Nah, I blame the girlfriend. We had to buy fake leaves.

Heyyy, you got the emails. For those who don’t know, which is all of you, I have sent Matt more emails the past 2 weeks than I have in 4 years of being an X-Er.
MICHAEL’s doesn’t bother me but having the wife and 2 daughters makes me SEEM less…festive.

Hmmm, that capitialzation of “seem” says more than I had intended and/or is true.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I’d love to have a Wii before the two feet of annual snow prevents outside exercise, but the money has to go to care and eventually a memorial for my cat Spike. :( I seriously doubt my family will spring for one for me, either, as its not a ‘need’ according to them (incidentally I finally heard from them today - most of them had as shitty a month as I did).
I rank Game Fuel just below Livewire and Baja Blast as my favorite Dews. Tastes like liquid cherry gummy to me, which, while its tasty, just isn’t tasty enough. Code Red is at the bottom of my list, with its carbonated cold medicine taste.
Pitch Black unfortunately isn’t even on the list, because whatever dyes they use to make purple drinks gives me a migraine in short order, so I avoid them like the plague now. Even purple Sobes.

Wow, my little Wii network of XE buds is growing! Thanks for adding me, everyone. Now if I can just get MATT to add me! Whatcha doin, working for a living? LOL…anyway, sorry to restart old news, but I just got this crazy box-o-fun last week or so. So far so neat. BTW, anyone know of any fun free Wii stuff, or how to get free points, playable demos, etc?

Terror Claws Cole @ 09/02/2007 11:53 PM EDT
Homestarrunner.com changed some of their games to work with Wii,so there’s that. As far as free points,I think you’re on your own.

Random question to you fellow Okies: Do any of you happen to know why channel 34 has been off the air for like three days?

Been visiting X-E since 2001. First post since 2002. Always been 2-3 Buds from posting. 2-3 Buds over now. Don’t care about Mountain Dew or Halo. Love X-E! Too bad it’s not what it used to be, but I guess we’ve all move on….Go X-E! hi.

I still say we should combine the Summer Megaparty and Halloween Countdown somehow. Come on, who doesn’t wanna say they participated in something called a “Partydown”? That name just seems to OOZE coolness.

DocDragon @ 09/03/2007 3:03 AM EDT
Doc,
Eh…
Summer and Halloween just really don’t mix for me. Maybe a faint little blue in between, but I like to keep my festive mindsets separate. Except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those two were MADE for each other (I want Dairy Queen).

We found a pack of the new Dew at the store; so far it’s decent.
I’m sure the vodka helps….

My lady threw me a surprise birthday party earlier tonight! I was under the impression I was going to her parent’s house for a “September Birthday(s) Party” that would celebrate my 30th, her birthday (9/15), her younger brother’s birthday(9/2), and her sister-in-law’s (9/err, not sure) as well. It has been sort of a tradition for the past five years to combine b-day parties since so many of us (her family and mine) have September dates. So usually two parties… one at her parent’s house and another at my parents, since our families live hours apart.
So as we pull up I was expecting a small gathering, about 10-12 people, entirely from her family. It turns out she had my entire immediate family, her family (of course), most of my college friends, and other family members from as far as 200 miles away all waiting for me when we pulled up to her parent’s house. So no… it wasn’t a party for four people, somehow this was all in my honor.
It took me twenty minutes to be able to form a coherent sentence. I was pretty much in shock upon arrival.
Tonight was one of those rare nights where you stop and really appreciate the things you have and the people in your life. Far too often I concentrate on the negative aspects of my life (currently being out of work for example) and you lose sight of just how good you may have it. This is the happiest I have been in months and I owe it all to the wonderful girl sleeping upstairs who I really should have married long ago.
I’m sorry everyone had such a bad August. My life has been pretty frustrating lately as well. Here is a toast to new beginnings, putting the negative behind us (as much as we can), making the best out of what we have, and never losing sight of all the greatness that is around us, even when we struggle to see it.
Sorry to be sappy… it is just that kind of a night.

The red takes away from it a bit, I mean you could drink it from a clear glass without anybody accusing you of drinking urine!

Kaori: Radioactive chihuahua urine, as a lady friend of mine once delicately put it.
Annette: Channel 34 being USA? I haven’t noticed anything wrong with it. I’m in Norman using Cox Digital, so maybe it’s just your provider.

Magic Toy: I’ve discovered that life is a rollercoaster with a whole bunch of really crazy twists and turns, linked together and made wonderful by little moments of sheer happiness; like your moment this weekend. It’s always good to be reminded that someone -anyone- cares for you. And as someone wo knows a thing or two about being out of work, it will always fall into place eventually. Another great fact of life I’ve learned -and said here before- is that everything we experience is getting us ready for the next chapter in our lives; even things like being out of work or struggling with a shitty month. It all adds to your life experience points that helps you fight the big monster later in the game…
Like how I tied it back to the original topic?

Shuanfu @ 09/03/2007 10:11 AM EDT
Magic Toy: that was really nice of them… had my 30th last year and was suprised by my wife and close friends as well. Funny to see another September family out there… out of the 4 of us in this house, my wife is 9-11 (i know i know), mine is 9-18 and my son is 9-25.. my daughter has the audacity to be 2-24 lol… another friend of ours is turning 30 on 9-13 so its going to be a busy month..
Atomic i’ll add u later on today, got the Cap and Toy on there now…
and for anyone interested in fireworks, I took some pics at our atlantic national exibition and made a few 1280×1024 backgrounds out of em.. feel free http://www.mactavishland.ca/blog/index.php/?p=113

Here I thought it just the cable system here in ‘Darko that suddenly flaked out on 34. It’s happening up your way too, Annette? Cuts into my Saturday mornings and made me miss Batman and Legion. Maybe we ought to poke about KOCB’s website or just Google the question and see what pops up.

Hmmm have to pass on the HALO3 Dew something about them 25 cent juicey being carbonated just doesnt float my boat. Man I miss that Pitch Black though. But anywayz any X- Box 360ers out there wouldnt mind building up my gamer buddylist with some good ol’ folks from XE. My Gamertag is Wolf2K4Ever.
I think it tastes like a carbonated fruit punch type of drink with a bit of the caffeine kick. I love the case design my best friend and I are getting one for display. So we can have master chief soda next to our buzz cola and our krusty O’s.

Posted by
Goob @ 09/04/2007 3:53 AM EDT
What great timing! I had just come back to the office and logged on to XE. Oddly enough, I had 2 20-ounce bottles of the Gamer Fuel junk in my possession. I figured I should try it at least once. If I hated it, I would leave the other bottle in the work fridge for one of our gullible co-workers to slug down. I decided to keep the second bottle since this stuff isn’t horrible enough not to drink at another time. It tastes sort of like LiveWire with some Code Red mixed in. I didn’t see any additional ingredients (like taurine or ginseng), so I’m wondering why this stuff is called “Gamer Fuel” when regular Dew would have the same effect. Not like this stuff has any herbal enhancers in it, like Diet Pepsi Max. It’s just a mash-up of two other Dew varieties with some snazzy new packaging to appeal to the gaming crowd…..of which I am proudly one!
Just having Master Chief on the and the Halo 3 logo on the package is going to make this a big seller. Halo 3 is already being uber-hyped. Sadly, I do not own a 360 and will probably never play Halo in any form. I have my PS2, PS3 and my Wii….and that’s about all I need (or can afford right now). :p Looking forward to WWE SmackDown VS RAW 2008, Devil May Cry 4 and Heavenly Sword (even though IGN gave it a 7/10).
For all you Wii number collectors…..I have no clue what mine is. LOL Sorry.

I’ve been trying to find it since I saw the commerical for it. I’m starting to turn out like you matt, collecting Sodas I mean. I’ve got Pepsi summer mix, Jolt Cola ( The New Kind) & really gross Jone’s Soda Christmas Cokes. And Game Fuel would make a perfect addition.

… I don’t understand why people are comparing this to Code Red. It’s not even vaguely similar.
Code Red has that craptacular “Cherry flavoring” flavor. Like Red Koolaid. (I don’t care; that stuff isn’t cherry. it’s.. red) And this stuff has CHERRY FLAVOR.
There’s a huge difference there. Also: I only notice an aftertaste that some people complain of in the bottled version. The canned stuff is, for once, the better version.
…too bad Halo 3 is only released once. Then this stuff will go away. I never understood the attraction to Halo. Singleplayer, it’s far below average. Online it’s ummm… well… it’s…. yeah. Deathmatch. Yay. Plays about the same as Unreal Torunament and Quake 2 did.
…wait that is SO far off topic. Anyway, the stuff is great; and not a thing like Code Red. In fact, if the label hadn’t told me so there is no way I woulda guessed there was any Mountain Dew involved in this wonderful tasting concotion.

Sohei Fox @ 09/07/2007 12:48 AM EDT

its just regular dew and code red mixed together for a rush of total bs. They should give us a new flavor….not something i can make at my house.

Personally I love Mt dew and code red, but that new mt dew is absolutely disgusting. I shared it with some people at work and we all agree it tastes like spoiled ass.

Posted by
Sheila @ 09/08/2007 8:00 PM EDT
Between this and Code Red, this one is far superior in terms of cherry flavor. While code red seems like Mountain Dew with a hint of cherry, this one tastes like a cherry hug with a hint of Mountain Dew. While I probably won’t drink either one again, I will say this was a definite pick me up, and yeah, one of the better Mountain Dew flavors, and I’ve tried them all save Baja Blast and that purple slurpee.
I opted not to read anyone else’s posts but jump right to complaining…isn’t raspberry the red berry? and what on earth was wrong with pitch black?! twaz godly…
