BOOGAZ.

Narrowly managing to fend off the pen-and-pad-clad masses as I entered Toys 'R' Us with my newfound fame, I dodged the vile paparazzi hanging near the back-to-school section and made my way to the clearance racks.

Sadly, clearance racks aren't what they used to be. When I was a kid, I'd get things like the Wheeled Warriors accessory sets -- each with two rubbery "Monster Minds" brains -- for eight cents a pop. Whereas "clearance" used to roughly equate to "please get this shit out of our store," now it's just a clever way of saying, "this is on sale." It's a bit of a crapshoot, but sometimes, you win out:

These toys are so not my style, but I have to admit a certain appreciation for Boogaz, a gross-out toyline made by Moose Enterprises. Moose apparently has like twenty-thousand tons of sticky/slimy toy material, as this is no less than their eighteenth attempt to market toys that make use of such materials in the past few years.

The disgusting concept: Kids purchase plastic noses (or large picking fingers, which are pricier) that are stuffed with copious amounts of ooze, and at least one official Boogaz figure. There are 24 figures in all to collect, and some are rarer than others. Borrowing liberally from the Monster In My Pocket series, the figures are assigned point values to help us understand which are "common," "rare" or "glowing ultra rare." My kingdom for a "glowing ultra rare" Boogaz figure.

The fun's in the mystery. When you buy a nose, there's no telling which figure might be inside. The package also states that one out of every six noses has two figures lurking among the hidden ooze. Moving past the off-putting notion that this is a toy collection dedicated to snot, I kinda like the cut of its jib. Hope I pick a winner...

Damn. While "Sir Picks Alot" is worth a respectable nine points, he's still a common figure, delivering nowhere near the level of glory of, say, the forty point "Skummy Mummy."

Once you get the loose slime off (harder than it sounds), the figures serve as strangely-shaped Wacky Wall Walkers -- you can splat 'em against the nearest wall, and if the gods decide to take pity on you, they'll do their little gooey vertical catwalk much to the delight of dimwits and house cats everywhere.

The slime itself counts as a toy, and to really push the idea that it's snot, it's really watery slime. Much different from normal toy slime fare. There's really no way to get it all back in the nose container once you yank it out, and I eventually had to give up and wash my hands clean. I don't like it when toys create a need for me to wash myself, but since I'm getting to pull rubbery medieval knights out of noses, I'm gonna give this one a pass.

This is probably a minority opinion, but I like Boogaz toys. Gonna marry 'em.

Happy SNT.

Hey Matt, long time reader of the site but one of those guys that didn’t really post too much. One of the greatest sites on the internet today, by far.

Even the boogercop is picking his nose. I don’t know how I could have missed out on this.

Careful with that, Matt. My cousin had one of those and theres still green in the carpet. Also, congrats on your new found fame!

Chestnuts roasted by Catzgirl @ 08/18/2007 8:43 PM

So how much were they charging for them?

Chestnuts roasted by marioshoku @ 08/18/2007 8:44 PM

Er, gross, but oddly intriguing?

What’s everyone up to tonight? We’re having a party for my roommate’s birthday at my place, woo.

Kind of reminds me of that line of mini figures that were in the trash bags that you dissolve with water.

Chestnuts roasted by BOAT @ 08/18/2007 9:13 PM

That toy is just a bad stain waiting to happen.

I spent today doing some BS extra project for work, which allowed my mind to wander- and I’ve realized I’m getting a little too overeager for Halloween WAY too early. Shouldn’t really be a problem, but it’s still gonna be another 2.5 months of waiting, and I’ll inevitably burn out just before the holiday.

I work next to a Yankee Candle and they already have a window display up, and all the other stores are just getting started. I got a Lillian Vernon catalog the other day and could easily pick out about $150 worth of decorations I need to have. This is killing me.

Looks like you picked a moderate winner!

OK so I am watching Beerfest at the moment and it is moderately funny. What are the rest of you up to at this moment?

Boogaz – As seen on X-Entertainment.

Great Matt, now another wonderful, yet crappy item for me to buy. I don’t know if you secretly work for THE WEIRD AND OBSCURE TOY FACTORY, but you keep on finding these cool, crazy, strange toys. And I have to buy them, cause I like weird and strange junk. Now if I can get my wife to let me have a HUGE BOOGER FILLED toy in the house, life would be sweet….any suggestions?

Chestnuts roasted by Mufu @ 08/18/2007 9:36 PM

That would be so cool if the slime wasn’t so watery…

Somehow I don’t think I’ll see these sold in Australia anyway….

OMG I am posting to the blog of a bonafide celeb!!!

I love the article, my nephew has one of those things but I don’t recall what figure he has. i have never seen the fingers…I’ll have to check out Toys R Us tomorrow afternoon.

These toys are so my style. I wish they were plastic instead of wall walker style, though. I’d want to display/keep/make them fight for my favor.

Oops. Forgot to close the italics. And my name is Eddie, but Eddoe sounds pretty good, too, I guess.

Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 08/18/2007 9:48 PM

Eddie, I’m not sure why, but your initial post with the italics and misspelling of your name had me laughing pretty hard. I guess it’s due to the fact that I am sitting at the computer with nothing better to do, drinking beers while my roommate is passed out on the couch. Viva Saturday night!

I’m looking forward to a night of Sims 2, but I thought I’d check in here to see what was going on first. I’m bummed I missed the post from yesterday. At least now when I’m talking about the site I visit all the time I can say, “X-Entertainment. You know, from the Ghoulies IV box?” It won’t help, but I can at least say it.

Chestnuts roasted by Lori @ 08/18/2007 10:32 PM

Pretty good, pretty neat.

So, serious question: Will the “Ghoulies IV blurb” make it on the resume?
Webmaster, Nickelodeon employee, TOY FARE writer, and *half-cough, half-talking* GHOULIES IV DVD quotee.

Can I attend the ersatz wedding?

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 08/18/2007 10:36 PM

Bludge: I’m glad you got a laugh out of it.
I looked up Boogaz on google and this commercial came up:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8vak8OSLZI
It’s pretty awesome. In the sidebar on youtube there’s “Boogaz episode one” by some kid, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 08/18/2007 10:45 PM

In general, I’m not a fan of toys that make a mess… because washing your hands is never fun. Though, Boogaz slime will go great with Orange Crush and Grape Juice carpet stains. It’ll be like a tapestry of mistakes.

Chestnuts roasted by Dr. Acula @ 08/18/2007 10:52 PM

Those look gross. Yeah, I know what you mean about the clearance racks not being what they use to. Its fun to find KB Toys that are still in business though because you never know what you’ll find there. I found classic Mortal Kombat figures one time and I don’t know why they had them.

Chestnuts roasted by Tommy @ 08/18/2007 11:00 PM

I so would have been all over this when I was 10 or 11!

I’m just checking in, I just finnished watching ahem…the babysitters club…on family channel. Yeah, I’m not too proud of myself, but it was interesting to see a young Rachael Lee Cook, and the girl that played Gina on Full House. Some of the other girls look familar but I couldn’t place them.

And now because I am an old pregnant lady I’m off to bed. Tomorrow were going into the good ol’ US of A to go to a fair, and I am sooo going to get me some butterfly fries!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 08/18/2007 11:00 PM

Dr. Acula,
Your remake, “It’ll be like a tapestry of mistakes” made me laugh. I think it’s because “Tapestry of Mistakes” sounds like the name of some undiscovered alt band.

Chestnuts roasted by Thomas @ 08/18/2007 11:01 PM

Allow me to correct myself…Rachael Leigh Cook

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 08/18/2007 11:03 PM

What am I doing? Watching Forrest Gump on TNT.

As for Beerfest…I liked it. I’ll agree that it was Moderately funny. It’s definately a movie I could relate to, being in a frat and all (even though I’m not a drinker)

As for this Boogaz thing…Moose puts out lots of crap like that. There was that Mighty Beanz thing a few years ago, and this seems to be a much grosser rehash of it.

I remember Mighty Beanz…It was popular for about…a year or so. I worked at KB so those things were really popular. Aftger the first series they had to thing of other Rare Beanz. The first series was famous for having the Mighty Moose bean (a bean with the Moose logo’s face on it) that was only limited to 1000. Never did see it myself.

And my latest blog entry…I forced myself to watch High School Musical 2 to blog it in real time. Don’t know why I did it, but I’d say it’s a good read.

You know, as much fun as I had with toy slime as a kid, I HATED the smell. It took something away from the joy of covering Man-at-Arms in slime in Hordak’s Slime Pit.
