07/30/2007: Summer Megaparty: Kool-Aid, Pokemon, Beer, Blah.
I finally decided to clean the tick-infested Kool-Aid Section, and in celebration, there’s a brand new Kool-Aid review. Don’t get too excited…it’s just “Slammin’ Strawberry-Kiwi.” While lacking the cultural punch of a Purplesaurus Rex, the stuff tastes so good that I hereby declare that I will drink nothing but Slammin’ Strawberry-Kiwi Kool-Aid from now until the day I die.
Those of you who read X-E despite being pretty normal adults with pretty normal adult interests may want to fast forward to the end of this entry. It’s time for a…
POKEMON DIAMOND UPDATE!!!

Still really digging it. I love that it’s the kind of game that I can totally forget about for a few days and get right back into without much need for refreshers or reminders. That came in especially handy yesterday, when we had a blackout and the only thing in the entire house that would make noise was my fully charged Nintendo DS.
I’ve got seven badges, and I’m now up to the part where you’ve gotta track down the Team Galactic dude in a cave. I will admit that some parts can get tedious, especially if you’ve played the older games, but there are still enough new twists and hiccups to keep the good times rolling. I’m also theorizing that most players use some form of guide or walkthrough to finish this, because it’s a bit trickier than the previous titles and there are times when I just have absolutely no clue if I’m supposed to go northeast, southwest or the dreaded eastwest.
Check out my original Pokemon Diamond post to see the Poketeam I started out with. Times have changed since then. Here’s who I’m exploiting now:

My cute little
Chimchar has evolved into
Infernape, and at close to Level 60, he’s nearly unstoppable. He’s got two kickass fire moves and two beat-you-to-death fighting moves, and they seem so perfect that I’ve been skipping all of the new maneuvers the game keeps asking me to install as I level him up. Meanwhile, Luxio has achieved his dream of becoming
Luxray, and he’s hovering in the Level 55 area. Between these two Pokemon, I haven’t lost a match yet. The best is when some idiot challenges me to a doubles match, because this tandem of terror just totally annihilates everyone with a series of Flame Wheels, Crunches and Thunder Fangs.
Ugly Bidoof has evolved into Bibarel. I never use him, but since he’s the only Pokemon on my team capable of using the “Surf” move, he gets to stay. It’s a similar situation with my shitty Geodude, who has been on the team since Day One, yet hasn’t been in more than like three battles, tops. He’s the only one who can plow through boulders and climb up rock walls, so I need him.
In the game, there’s a “daycare center” that will raise useless Pokemon for you. My Starly was pretty useless, so I left him there until yesterday. Son of a bitch went up like 65,000 levels and quickly evolved into Staravia. I would’ve left him there even longer, but none of my other Pokemon could learn the “Fly” move. Isn’t that interesting?
Finally, one of the friendlier characters in the game insisted that I carry an egg around, and after several hours of doing so, it hatched into Riolu, a baby Pokemon who looks like a freezing dog. He’s been completely without merit as far as battling goes, but I’ve decided to give the kid a break and let him see the world for a while.
Right now, I’m at that point in the game where I just want to get the “real stuff” done. It’s clear that I’m supposed to catch every Pokemon there is, but that’s really tedious, and if I’m being honest, kind of boring. I could see getting into it as a “second game” when the real adventure stuff wears out, but for now, I just want to beat all of the bad guys and hear lots of triumphant music as I do it.
I feel bad for those of you who have absolutely no idea what in the fuck I was just talking about, so to provide a sharp contrast to Pokemon, let’s end with manly beer:

I only drink Guinness once in a blue moon, but we just bought new beer glasses, and if you’re going to put beer into a glass, there are few options finer than Guinness. Look at that! So soothing and lava lamp-esque. Sadly, the swirly whirly fun ends about a minute after your pour it, with the liquid settling into a constant deep hue topped by a thick head akin to beer-flavored Cool Whip. I think Guinness makes the beer do the swirly stuff sheerly because it’s impossible to resist drinking more and more of it just to see magic swirly stuff over and over again. I love swirly stuff.
I couldn’t even finish this blog entry without totally breaking my vow to drink nothing but Slammin’ Strawberry-Kiwi Kool-Aid. Oh well. Everyone knows I’m a liar anyway.

I still haven’t picked it up. I started playing one of the GBA games again, looking at what I needed to fill out in my Pokedex. I started to look around at what I needed to do to get some of them and remembered why deep down I don’t find these games to be any fun after the main story.

Nintendo Power sent me the Ultimate Pokedex for renewing my subscription. Just seeing how many Pokemon there are makes me want to quit playing Pearl, because I know I will never catch them all.

stick with riolu. once he evolves into lucario and gets aura sphere, he takes out most pokemon in one hit. and he looks cool. almost like a ninja dog.

Wow I am at pretty much the same exact spot as Matt. That cave is getting annoying but at the end is the promise of a boss battle followed by the games “on the box” pokemon. I second keeping riolu having a fighting ninja dog on your team is well worth it. I don’t remember getting one in an egg though. I got mine through an item trade. Pretty sure there is some secret island that after you beat with an ally you get that egg though.
Now to completely negate that last paragraph I am going to shove lemons in my eyes or some other such manly act.

mmmm, the Guinness. I made a homemade BBQ sauce with a can of Guinness, some steak sauce, Worchestershire (however the fuck you spell it), brown sugar, and spices. It was delicious on ribs!! Otherwise, for beer, I’ve been sticking to Leinie’s Sunset Wheat (go Wisconsin!!) and Rolling Rock. Except Rolling Rock is so light, it’s hard to catch even a small buzz off of it.
I don’t understand Pokemon, so I did skip that part.
Just watched Night Shift again last night. The Fonz is frickin hilarious in that movie, so is Micheal Keaton. I also saw a frying pan that was the same as one my mom still has to this day!
oookay, right.

Mmmm, that Guinness sure does look good. I also liked the fact that you managed to work in the name of another beer when you described how infrequently you drink it.
That pint would have been heavenly with the bbq chicken I grilled out earlier tonight. Poor me, I was stuck with a can of 7-up.
Nice Kool-Aid review. I’ve always gotten a kick out of those. Every time I read one I am nearly inspired to mix up a batch. I wonder what I actually have in the cupboard. Let’s see… we’ve got Tropical Punch (x2), Cherry, Raspberry Invisible (x2), Orange and Pink Lemonade. None of them are too crazy.

I really look forward to your Pokemon articles, because I too have a pokefetish. I think in your article you mispelled Bibarel as Birabel, but being that only half a dozen people even knew what was going on in that part of the post, I am the only one that cares/notices.
Oh, and Matt, I haven’t seen you review the Watermelon Cherry flavor. I yell at my mom to buy exclusively that, as it , but she always ends up getting 2 packs of every flavor, saying that I need diversity. I’m 18 and admitting this :[

Hahaha. I live this myself. There comes a time when you realize that if you want something done right you have to go buy it yourself and wave it in their face “was that so hard? no, didn’t think so.” However, when you are either too lazy or your financial situation demands attention elsewhere you must make due with what she is willing to buy you unasked.
Such is the balance, son. Such is the balance. I think my financial situation is going to demand that I actually buy Diamond or Pearl. Yes. I leave it to everyone here to convince me which one to get. Note that I have never played before. GO!

I’m drinking Kool-Aid right now. In fact, Kool-Aid singles have to be the greatest invention ever for someone who always has a full fridge and never enough room for a pitcher of Kool-Aid. I just wish they made them in more flavors.

Matt, you say that Slammin’ Strawberry Kiwi is a hard flavor to find? Jeez, I’ve got most of a 1 lb bucket of the stuff on my shelf, and it’s been there for years. It has a layer of dust over the top and everything, but the contents look healthy enough. Do you want me to send it to you or something? It only ever gets used for cleaning the tarnish off metal jewelry (and orange Tang really works better for that anyway.)

Ghosted by
Talia @ 07/30/2007 10:23 PM EDT
I’ve got enough of it, but thanks. Note that the original Island Twists flavor can be tricky to find, but the plain old Twists flavor (sans “Island”), is still in many stores.
Kool-Aid’s official site is a mess, so it’s hard to tell which flavors are still in production and which just haven’t sold out yet.

I am not a fan of strawberry beverages, and I don’t much like kiwi at all. So I am a party pooper to this flavor before I have even tried it. But, i am so glad to read a Kool-Aid review at any time.
At the restaurant I work at the water pitchers we use are the Kool-Aid pitchers. When I have a crappy grumpy customer I like to say, “hey, I got something for you!” and show them the pitcher and make the smile in the condensation. If that doesn’t get them smiling I assume their dog has died etc.

If I’m not mistaken, your Geodude’s the one with Rock Smash and Rock Climb and your Bibarel has Surf.
Surf is a very useful move, and handy for teaching to most other Pokemon. As for your Geodude, if you don’t like him, you can cut him from your team and use Bibarel with Cut, Rock Smash, Rock Climb, and Surf. He uses three of those four for me while I have a Pelipper (Evolve a Wingull) to use Surf, Fly, and Defog for me. That’s nearly all of my HMs!
Good luck! And actually, I’m about at the same spot you are! I’ve just been spending time breeding.

Frost @ 07/31/2007 12:57 AM EDT
And I forgot to mention: When Riolu likes you a lot, it will evolve on its next level up into Lucario, an impressive powerhouse with some great attacks (including Aura Sphere, a Fighting type move with 90 base power and will not miss)! Then again, your Infernape is already part Fighting type, so you don’t really need a second on your team, I think.

Kneg-Diamond is definitely the more popular version selling more copies than Pearl. But they are essentially the same game. Whatever pokes are in one can easily be traded over wi fi for the ones in the other. I guess Diamond is more popular because the box is blue instead of pink? either way the only true way to decide is find out which exclusive pokes look best to you.
i gotta say I love how the game brings up your in game journal to try and remind you what the hell you were doing if you haven’t played in a week although “player defeated grunt player captured pikachu” really doesn’t help you remember where you were going or why.

Magic Toy, mpkalypso, HELL Yeah! I dig the Summer Shandy too, the only one I’m really not a fan of is the Berry Weiss. It’s been around too long, and I can only drink like 2 before I get sick of them. The Sunset Wheat has coriander in it, so mpkalypso that might be what you don’t like. I always think it reminds me of blueberry…but it could just be cause the label’s blue!

That monkey looks less like an adorable monkey and more of a rip-your-face-off-and-eat-it-’cause-I’m-from-****ing-space monkey. He also reminded me of an anecdote my friend’s father told me a few years ago.
When he was a little kid, he loved to go to the zoo, like most kids. Nothing unusual there. One time when he went, there was this lady standing by the monkey cage, teasing the monkeys with peanuts or popcorn or something. I don’t remember what it was exactly, but the monkeys wanted it and the lady was being pretty mean. After putting up with her taunting long enough, she suddenly had a face full of freshly made and flung monkey poo. It was one of those golden moments in life where one literally roflmaool’s. (For those of you who don’t speak internets, that means “rolling on (the) floor laughing my ass off out loud.”)

Yeah I was bummed about all those allegations too, Bill. Not because it makes MvW any less entertaining for me because I honestly don’t really care, but everybody’s hating on Bear now and it’s a shame.
I like that there’s a little touch of Christmas in July in the Kool-Aid review.

Even if Bear stayed in hotels, I’ll still love that show. I kind of figured it wasn’t completely the real deal, but it’s not like he’s faking it all. He’s eating spiders, drinking the water from elephant crap, and climbing down waterfalls. I’d rather watch Man vs. Wild than Survivorman any day, even if it’s somewhat staged.

Hello, everyone! This post brings back memories of when I was into pokemon several years ago. As a matter of fact, I just bought New Super Mario Bros. for my DS today, and it’s looking pretty good. I wish I could choose between Mario and Luigi, though. It has a lot of minigames, which is a plus. And, as with other Mario games, you can find hidden warps to skip levels. For now, though, I prefer to go through every level in order. So far, it looks like a pretty good game overall, and Mario fans like me will definately take to it. Sorry for the long post.

Which do I buy, peoples? I’m really waiting for Norbert, if you can’t tell :p
Once again, ask and ye shall receive!
I have Pearl, which is pretty good in its own right, but in terms of Version-Exclusive pokemon, I’d say again that Diamond has better ones (Stunky/Skuntank, Dialga, Scyther/Scizor, Tyranitar line, Kecleon, Cranidos, etc). That, and I can trade your version exclusives with mine (Palkia, Glameow/Purugly, Salamence & Walrein lines, Houndoom, Shieldon, etc)
Since Matt has Diamond, I’ll tell you that Dialga’s a Steel/Dragon dual type and has only 2 weaknesses, fighting and ground and is the only pokemon with this type. Pearl’s is Palkia and is Water/Dragon dual type with only Dragon attacks its weakness. The only other pokemon with this type is Kingdra.
Matt (or anyone else), if you want to catch them (I suggest you too) I suggest either using quick balls (worked for my friend with Dialga) or whittle its HP to the red and use a Dusk ball. Unlike other legendaries, they’re much easier to catch because you just went through all those boss battles.
And like everyone else said, Rilou evolves into the very kickass Lucario, but only by Friendship and only during the daytime will it evolve. And Aura Sphere is one hell of an attack, it’s the Fighting version of Swift, as it will do damage no matter what the opponent did to avoid it (Fog, digging, flying, double team, etc) It’s also the only non-legendary pokemon to learn it.
Matt, you have 7 badges and your top 2 pokemon are above level 55?! Wow. That 8th badge will be a cakewalk, but Luxray & Infernape alone won’t defeat him, and you’ll need other types for the Elite 4. A grass type, a psychic type and dark-, ice- and fighting-type moves are absolutely necessary for the Elite 4.
Bibarel’s only use is an HM slave, as it is more effiecient to use it for Cut, Surf, Rock Smash, Strenght, and Waterfall. You’re going to need the last 4 alone for Victory Road. It’s also a waste of a move to teach Geodude Rock Smash (a mistake I’ve regretted in emerald). It’s basic use is to withstand sandstorms, evolve into Golem, and use Earthquake. Also, the tm for Stealth Rock = VERY helpful not just in long battles lke Elite 4, but very good in competitive play.
Besides Pikachu/Raichu, Luxray’s the only useful electric type in pre-national dex Diamond/Pearl. It can learn Crunch, which will help against Psychics and Ghosts (IE, Lucien of Elite 4)
By the way, I need both Chimcar & Turtwig, and I have PLENTY of fossil pokemon. I have at least 12 Shieldon, plus 6 Kabutos, not to mention extras of Aerodactyl & Lileep (Anorith & Omanyte are really rare in Pearl, so I only have 1 of each)
If it wasn’t 3:30 in the morning, I would be awake enough to post the Friend Code, but I’m going to bed now, night!
kidneyboy: Yeah, I am not crazy about Berry Weiss either. Just like you I can only stomach one or two before I can’t handle any more. My favorite Leinie brews have always been their Red and Honey Weiss. I pretty much will buy those from time-to-time, year round. So far I have only been turned off by their Sunset Wheat and Berry Weiss.
To change the channel to something more interesting (I hope) to the rest of the readers… I just finished watching the “Making of” documentary on disc two of The Monster Squad. This is great stuff guys. For anyone who was internally debating getting this DVD I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. I am now listening to the cast/director commentary.
By the way, a question for those that own this DVD. Has anyone else found Tom Noonan to be somewhat of a dick when watching the documentary? I’ve always admired the guy for his work in Manhunter and RoboCop 2. Now I think I’d just like to slap him in the mouth. Anyone else agree?
Another by the way… I nearly typed Manhunger accidentally in the previous paragraph. I am very glad I didn’t do that.

It’s too bad the Slammin’ Strawberry Kiwi ad wasn’t included with that. That was part of their “make up bands based on Kool-Aid flavors” phase. They referred to KAM as “the Big Man” then and the host kept daring to address him as “HIS FRUITINESS.” Probably got his lights punched out by KAM once the ad was over.

I used to drink strawberry kiwi koolaid last year sometimes and it was good stuff. Now my best friend and I are drinking the heck out of propel water and they have a strawberry kiwi flavor. The strawberry overpowers the kiwi but it’s good in a natural flavor sort of way. I enjoy variety in my drinks, every time I go to the store I get a different flavor. My favorite koolaid twist flavor is the ice tea lemonade favor they used to have! That was good stuff. Maybe I can make that from scratch someday.

Thank you for posting a new review. The Kool-Aid reviews were my initial reason for coming to this site, as i am an avid fan of this delicious elixir as well. Personally, my favorite is either Mountain Berry Punch or Blastin Cherry Berry. Keep up the good work, duder. I think i’m going to go and re-read the old reviews now!
Aww, it touches my terrifying claws that people remember me after a long absence. Man, that sucks about the allegations of MvW, I love that show. Terror Claws, isn’t there a baby in the near future for you? I hope all is well, when is the due date?

I don’t know if everybody here is as gay as I am, but if you’re a fan of Pac Man, you should probably check out Wal Mart. So far, 3 different Wal Marts around OKC, their animal crane games have all contained Pinky (pink ghost) stuffed animals, and they’re pretty cool, too.
One had an Inky stuffed animal, but he was buried by an Abe Lincoln doll (no lie).
I’m a bartender at an Irish pub, and I’ve seen much worse pours then that! Not bad Matt!

Speaking of Guinness, has anybody tried Yuengling’s Black & Tan? My gf and I went to the factory a few weeks ago and tried it on the tour. I don’t normally like stouts and darker beers, but this was fantastic. I highly recommend it.
As far as Pokemon, I’m completely lost in the discussion. I never understood it.

gotta love letting it go for a couple days and then coming in to many post goodness to use some of that not-so-fun work time… now to catch up…
MaryJane hope you enjoyed my rantings… yup I’m an aging geek and I just can’t help it… i’ll take the tempting with sarcasm lmao…
Cloverfield Project: Saw the same trailer before TF and foamed at the mouth wondering just what it could be.. can’t wait and hope they don’t spoil the anticipation by leaving it a mystery as to what it could be….
Voltron Movie? that would be way cool and pretty much complete my childhood ‘must be made into a live action movie’ list….
Matt absolutely love the Guin.. they had the glass pack last year here and by the time i finally got out to get a few packs they were sadly gone.. i alternate between this and Kilkenny (sp?) and the cool part is that it has the lava lamp effect too :P…
whew.. done..

The first scroll through, I didn’t even notice the picture of the Guinness was animated. Very subtle…

All too often I see people spelling it “Guiness”, despite claiming to have one (or more) right in front of them. Kudos and all for the proper spelling, but that pour is fantastic looking! Madd propz on the skilled hands, ya dig?

Okay, I’m surfing around getting my feet wet before I go pick it up tonight.
Once someone has uploaded their pokes from a previous generation and caught them in pal park, can they trade them? I ask because I want a Torchic and a Caterpie. If you don’t know why I want those, you haven’t been paying attention.

Hey Matt- Do you really work for Nickelodeon? If so, could you tell Christine McGlade I say HI and that I’m a big fan of her show! Thanks!

Not only is that Strawberry-Kiwi Kool-Aid good by itself, it is also one of the best flavors of Kool-Aid to make a mixed drink with. Add some vodka or light rum…deeeelicious!!

Kool-Aid’s official site is a mess, so it’s hard to tell which flavors are still in production and which just haven’t sold out yet.
The Kraft site has a list of their products on a page, including the Kool-Aid Flavors.

Harp beer is a light beer made by Guinness. Harp is really good. My cousin and I had 8 pints each on Saturday at some dive.

JOHN isn’t being serious, is he?
If you want to know where Christine McGlade REALLY is, I think you can get in touch with her through her blog. Which is her name with “dot com” at the end, I think.

kingklash, you owe me one (1), keyboard. Hilarity ensued
It’s a good day. I came home from my three year old nephew’s birthday party (kid screams like an air raid siren, is lousy at sharing, and throws a mean water balloon) to find the phone is working again (which means I don’t have to troop to the library to use the Internet) and Matt has a Kool-Aid flavor review I recognize. Yeah, I do remember this flavor, but sadly it debuted before I actually tried kiwi and it became one of my favorite fruits.
I’m now seriously considering a Nintendo DS and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl when I can afford it. If nothing else, it would probably be cheaper than a Wii (and much easier to find). I played my brother’s Blue version for over a year and almost finished the darn thing before I moved. I miss it.

Glad to see you’re still enjoying the game! I tragically lost my DS on my way to Comic Con, and with it my copy of Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Leaf Green. So, once I can come up with an extra $200 or so, it will be back to square one for me. I had legendaries, too. =(
But as I sit here biting my lip to keep from crying over my lost Pokemon, my spirits are brightened by the review of my FAVORITE KOOL-AID FLAVOR EVER.

Is it possible for juice to go bad? I made myself mango juice from a mix a WHILE ago, and the pitcher has been in the fridge. I have been on a big water kick lately, and have just been drinking H20. Then, Matt’s Kool Aid review made me crave juice bad, and I remembered that mango stuff I made…but it tastes really really weird…I dunno- maybe it’s in my head!

Muppet Baby: They way I understand it juice can go bad, yes. Just a few days ago I read on a bottle of juice I opened “use within 7-10 after opening for best taste”. In other words, if you mixed up this juice, and it was in your fridge for weeks and weeks, yes, it will go bad. It might not hurt you, but trust your taste buds.

Manimal, I’m sorry I did another Poke-post!
Update: Got the legendary Pokemon and final gym badges, and after several attempts, I finally took down the Elite Four…only to get my ass handed to me by the champion, meaning that I’ll have to beat the Elite Four again just to have the chance to get my ass handed to me by the champ one more time. Think it’ll be a week or so before I’m feeling up to the challenge.

Another Matt,
Why yes, yes I am. Still loving the Wii in as much HD as it can be!
Small world, eh?
