07/17/2007: Summer Megaparty: Doritos Collisions!

I’m sick as a dog. Maybe I should bark. I’m not really sure how to define my latest disease; I’m achy and alternating between massive chills and sweating like a mofo, but I don’t have a temperature and I’m not sneezing or anything. Perhaps I’m being punished by a higher power for dodging work all day to catch up on Entourage reruns. Drama, you card.

Fortunately, the woman called on her way home to inform me that I wouldn’t need to stress too hard about today’s blog post, as she picked up two perfect little somethings that are just right to gush about when your soul is only at half-mast. Shake hands with Doritos Collisions!

I’m a little surprised that Doritos would try something this unusual so soon after those X-13D mystery chips, but at least these are palatable for more than their novelty factor.

Summing up the idea, you get two distinct Doritos flavors in each bag. I love how the packaging design is split down the middle, but don’t take that to mean that you’re getting compartmentalized chip flavors — once you rip the bag open, the chips are all mixed together. I was hoping for the chip equivalent of Nintendo Cereal System, but no such luck.

To make sure the two flavors remain distinct even when swimming together, Doritos has picked two pairs of totally non-dilutive flavors. One of the Collisions “sets” includes “Hot Wings” and “Blue Cheese” Doritos, while the other blends “Zesty Taco” with “Chipotle Ranch.” Note that the pairings weren’t arbitrary — the flavors were designed to compliment each other.

The pairings work really well and keep your tastebuds alert. I’ve gotten into the habit of closing my eyes before pulling out each chip, trying to guess the flavors before putting ‘em to my tongue. This is how people stay amused when they’re shut-in losers.

It’s strange to think about all of the random, strange junk food spinoffs to arrive in recent years, especially if you grew up during a time when every arriving flavor was treated like the second coming of Christ. I think that’s mostly due to the fact that watchdogs have “forced” society to cut the balls off of junk food advertising. You’ll rarely see Doritos advertised during children’s programming, and when you finally do catch a commercial, you’re often left wondering why in the fuck Frito Lay would buy time for a Doritos ad during that particular show. So, instead of relying solely on that, they’ve gone viral — the weirder and less coherent a brand is, the more people like me will tell people like you about it.

Doritos Collisions are a neat idea overall. They’re also the only bags of chips that remind me of the Face/Off movie logo.

I want to take…his face…off.

Oh, I forgot to thank you for your wellwishes in the last thread, Danny. It was far from perfect, but it was acceptable and I got it done, that’s the important part.

20 hours?!? Wowza. I didn’t even sleep that long after I was up for 4 days straight. I think I got 14 that night.

Mystie: Seriously. I mean, what’s the point of even picking up the book once you know that Harry j+++CARRIER LOST+++

Mystie

It is for that reason that I have been cautiously avoiding anything Potter-related on the web. And I when I pick the book up at Midnight Friday, I will go in with my hearing aids off and get in and out of the store as fast as possible…

Cameron

Its for that reason that I am having mine shipped to me.

i can even begin to tell you guys how excited i am to go home and buy a couple bags of these new doritos… when new junk food hits stores, i get giddy like a little school girl.

..seriously.

Potter fans, avoid Something Awful. You know they’ll be spoilering all over the place, and my husband was on their boards yesterday and accidentally saw a spoiler icon. The internet is not safe!

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 07/18/2007 8:59 AM EDT

I really pray that we don’t, Mystie. Something Awful spoiled me last time and I’ve never quite gotten over it. As much as I hate to miss any of the Megaparty, I’d really like to do an internet sabbatical until around midday Saturday to just avoid the danger, but I’m waiting on the good news from Manimal first.

I came across this and figured you guys might enjoy seeing it.

It’s an ad for Chuck Norris Action Jeans. They used to ship out of the same zip code I live in now, I wonder if I could still score a pair?

The link is in my name.

My gf loves the Harry Potter books and movies, before I met her all I knew of him was watching those crazy late night infomercials on the christian tv stations about how the books promote satanism. But, now I’m a big fan of the movies….still too lazy to read the books though. Still, if they do promote satanism, then devil me up!

Dont know anything specific about your case Bill, but I worked traffic courts in Florida and 99% of the time peoples license get suspended for things like that because they think the State or the courts need to notify each other of things, when indeed they dont. Its usually up to the person who got the ticket to notify the different agencies, and usually only as a result of not paying the original fine on time. As for the cop that arrested you for the suspended license, if you didnt know your license was suspended, he should have written you a ticket with the statute for driving with a license unknowingly, which is an infraction and doesnt require any arrest. In that aspect, either he was ignorant of traffic law (which most of them are), was being a dick, or you knew your license was suspended and said so, though it doesnt sound like thats what you said or even knew.

Ghosted by meepy @ 07/18/2007 11:33 AM EDT

Meepy: That’s the thing. You can not have two active class E license. The state of FL never canceled my GA license so when the ticket was paid the court never notified FL. I didn’t know I still had an active drivers license in the state of GA. It’s fucked up and I got an apology from the court in GA. Didn’t think that would happen.
I work for the airlines and we have to keep our driving record to a low roar and when I got my speeding ticket I had to notify the company’s lawyers so they could handle my payment and reduce traffic points. Thank goodness I kept all my paperwork to prove my innocence.
Long story short, Meepy you are awesome. As for the DMV and traffic courts, they’re useless. Your whole life is dependant on some underpaid dick that my or may not be doing their job. I’m not bitter.

I really pray that we don’t, Mystie. Something Awful spoiled me last time and I’ve never quite gotten over it.

Yeah, thankfully I’d only scrolled down as far as to catch the names of a few people they claim will die. Grr.

This is how sad I am. A guy asked me out to dinner and a movie this Friday, and I told him it’d have to be one or the other because I had to be at B&N for the midnight release. Of course since he’s a D&D freak, he probably understands. ;)

Ghosted by Mystie @ 07/18/2007 12:18 PM EDT

I pre-ordered HP to pick up at Borders at midnight. I’ve never done such a thing before and don’t really know how it works. I was sent an e-mail that said starting at 9 am Friday morning, they’d start handing out tickets to show the order you can stand in line. WTF? What about those of us who have to work? If I can’t stop by until like 5:30, will I end up being the last person in line and not get my book until like 5 am?? Has anyone done this before?? Am I better off waiting until Saturday morning?

I have Crohn’s Disease…I have lost count of how many X-rays, ultrasounds and COLONOSCOPYs I have had since I was 16…

When ‘Half Blood Prince’ came out, I was teaching in Korea, and XE kept me connected to the world I left behind. The book was a week late arriving in Korean stores since the translation takes longer, blah blah blah…I was reading an innocent XE thread and SOMEONE- NOT EVEN A REGULAR- RUINED THE ENDING OF THE BOOK OUT OF NOWHERE! We weren’t even talking about Harry Potter!

I am working at my bookstore the night of the midnight party…we expect about 400 HP fans. Should be a good time. I am going to get my book at the end of my shift, then go home and be a hermit. THIS time, I will be surprised!

How much longer until Doritos comes out with a new incarnation of their staple “Nacho Cheeseier” brand. In the progression of the brand it’s gone from Nacho Cheese to Nacho Cheesier, then back to Nacho Cheese, but with more cheese than Nacho Cheesier….eventually they’ll do away with the chip entirely and have a bag full of cheese.

Feel better Matt. Maybe you should take some zinc?

Ghosted by Blink @ 07/18/2007 12:32 PM EDT

Yeah, there’s no reason for spoilers of any kind to be here. Definitely let me know if you catch any so I can speedily delete. Also, try to avoid discussing the contents of the book in a spoilerish way here — it can only do more harm than good. Same goes for new movies. Down with spoilers, yo.

Blue cheese Doritos…That just seems wrong to me…

Hope you feel better Matt…I had something similar to what you’ve got a few years ago…Not fun. :-(

You know, I’ve seen all of the Harry Potter flicks except the new one, yet I have yet to read or want to read the books. Same thing goes with the LOTR.

But I can definately understand your frustration with spoilers. We comic books fans went through something similar this year when they killed Captain America and it was on the news, websites, etc. before the stores opened.

Plus, if you’re a wrestling fan, spoilers are all over the place before the shows air.

y’know, the whole “Sick as a dog” thing makes me ponder… just what symptoms does one have to exhibit to be considered such? I personally think that in order to officially be Sick as a Dog, one has to be barely mobile and producing odors that could stain fabric and peel paint. At least that’s what happens when the dog is sick at my house…

OMG Muppet Baby, that’s the worst. My buddy has Crohn’s disease and it is no joke. He had to leave his profession because he was so sick. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Ghosted by Bill @ 07/18/2007 1:12 PM EDT

If by “sad” you mean “awesome”, then yeah, you’re totally sad Mystie :D
purplegirl, that’s how my store handled it last time. I would imagine that you would end up waiting at least a few hours if you had a high number, so if you want to avoid the aggravation you’d probably want to wait for the morning. I was somewhere in the 300s last time, but someone ahead of me traded their ticket so I got bumped up. Still had to wait a long time though. This time my store is handing out colored wristbands starting at 5 pm and then taking groups by color at midnight. Sounds like it will be a better solution, but I’ll have to leave work early to get a wristband in time since I didn’t preorder early enough.
Matt, would it be okay if I posted a link to my blog where people could have spoilery discussion if they wanted?

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 07/18/2007 1:31 PM EDT

Like others have said: No HP spoilers should ever pop up here; we have enough respect for each other not to do that. The last book was ruined for me by a bitch of a co-worker who thought it would be funny to shout out things and then say “you don’t know which will actually happen” because 1) she thought it was funny and 2) did I mention she was a bitch? We should have a 2-3 week moratorium and then talk it up with a mchugelarge spoiler warning tacked on the top. It will be fun to talk about here, but only after we’ve all had an honest chance to read the book!

Ghosted by Shuanfu @ 07/18/2007 1:32 PM EDT

Thanks for the heads up, squee. I was sort of on the fence about going to the midnight thing anyway, as I’m not a fan of children, much less dressed-up, past-their-bedtime, hopped-up-on-HP children! Saturday morning it is. I hope the line isn’t too long then either; I’m sposed to take a friend to the airport that day and would hate to have to get out of line to take her.

I’m known for screwing people over when it comes to HP. I’ve completely stood a friend up for lunch because I was so engrossed that I had no clue what time it was. I’ve cut dinner with a friend short so I could go home and read (I may have even faked an illness that time). Finally, when one of my friends made me leave the book at home so I wouldn’t read through dinner and I was DESPERATE to finish, I ended up at a B&N, curled up in one of the kids’ corners to finish it. That last one wasn’t screwing anyone over, just me being a whack-job!

Ghosted by purplegirl247 @ 07/18/2007 1:53 PM EDT

I’ve never gotten into Harry Potter, so you don’t have to worry about spoilers from me.

I have friends who refuse to watch live TV anymore since they got a DVR and they can watch it later, skipping the commercials (I’m always tempted to be a smart aleck and ask them if they realize that VCRs have had that capability for 30 years.) The problem is, since they don’t watch them when they come on, they get this backlog of programs, so whenever a group of us are together and I say, “Did you see last week’s episode of _____?” I get the, “It’s on our DVR but we haven’t watched it yet!” So then I have to stop since I don’t want to spoil anything. I find that really annoying, probably more so than I should. Still, I think it sucks that the rest of us are penalized because it takes them two weeks to watch stuff. Just had to get that out…

Ghosted by Lori @ 07/18/2007 2:18 PM EDT

So, my local B&N royally screwed up last time. Here was there deal: you came and got a ticket starting at 10am. When book 5 was released they did the logical thing and, starting at midnight, called ticket numbers in groups starting at ‘1′. So numbers 1-50 would go to the front, 51-100 would go to the back, etc. It was awesome. I was like 288 and only waited 1/2 hour at most. But for the last book, as I was getting to, they changed it. You still picked up the numbers but this time they were doing a lottery system. So stupid. I actually had a number in the 50’s so I spent the whole day thinking I would be in the first group. Nope. They started, due to the lottery system, in random places and I had to wait almost 2 hours before I got my copy. I know, I should have just left. I was the last in the people I knew to get my book. And the main reasons it was so annoying? First of all, they said they switched to the lottery system because they made a mistake and gave out too many numbers, so they wanted to be fair to everyone. And there were people that walked in the door at 5 til midnight, got a ticket in the 900s and then walked out the door at 12:05 with their book. Now, tell me how that is fair to everyone, especially those that had the forsight to get there earlier in the day?

So I’m debating about the B&N deal this time. I’m gonna call today and see if they can tell me their plan, and go from there.

Muppet Baby: I have Ulcerative Colitis and have been dealing with that “shit” since 19…been in the hospital countless times, had so many procedures, etc etc., in the past 11 years, I dont even remember life before that.

Bill: I guess working with Traffic for so long, I take for granted that I know things about it that the lay person doesnt. As for your GA license, when you got a FL license they should have sent the GA one back to GA to cancel it. As for your ticket troubles being linked to your GA license, Im not sure how that would happen…did you show the cop your GA license when you got the original ticket?

Ill tell you one thing, I moved from FL to NV and then to PA, and neither FL nor NV have cancelled their respective licenses when they should have by now. Luckly, I havent had any problems. and you are awesome too.

Can someone tell me, if the book is preordered at Borders, do they still need to wait in that line/lottery/whatever the hell?

Ghosted by meepy @ 07/18/2007 3:11 PM EDT

Thanks to an MSNBC news link this morning, I read the spoilers. Curiosity always gets the best of me, I’m afraid to say :( However, I’m still looking forward to reading my copy of Deathly Hallows. I love how JK Rowling weaves a story, and I can’t wait to see how it all pulls together in the end.

Anybody have that new Harry Potter video game for the Wii? I’ve wanted to buy a Wii for awhile now, but that game may provoke me into hunting one down!!

Ghosted by eliza @ 07/18/2007 3:13 PM EDT

Lori – My husband DVRs everything. He just does it for the sake of DVRing, like he just can’t be bothered to watch it when it’s on. And even on the rare occasions that he watches something as it airs, he still DVRs it…mostly wrestling stuff. It drives me nuts.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 07/18/2007 3:14 PM EDT

And yes, I was underpaid. I wasnt a dick though. I loved helping people cause I knew how frustrating it was. However, people were quite nasty to me a lot of the time.

Ghosted by meepy @ 07/18/2007 3:14 PM EDT

I really hate DVRs. When I was staying with my fiance’s parents, they’d DVR stuff and just leave it on there forever, and then maybe watch it a week later or something. Why bother to fucking record something if you’re home doing nothing while it’s airing?! Also, while it was recording, I couldn’t watch anything else, so that pissed me off.

As I mentioned earlier Amazon is shipping mine so all I have to worry about is staying in a bubble for 3 days after the release date since I was too cheap to pay for the shipping. Kingklash that was classic.

Well I am getting mine from Amazon on Saturday, since I wasnt too cheap to pay for shipping. The only reason I asked about the border thing is that my fiancee’s kid sister preordered it and we are taking her to get it that night…exciting no? But she called since my last comment and you are right…wristband early in the morning….seems pointless to have preodered it if you get it along with everyone else.

Matt- I know of your sorrows when dealing with Time Warner Cable. Back when it was Adelphia it took 4 different people to just hook our fucking internet up. (One of the guys said it wouldn’t be possible for us to use a cable modem!!!!!!!!! Where the fuck do they get these people???) And our first month we didn’t have any service…. and it kept going out like every other day. The damn cable modem was just sitting there, mocking me as i listened to the sounds of dial-up blasting through my speakers. Eventually things worked out but I have friends who have been having problems with Time Warner’s internet recently and I’m just keeping my fingers crossed.

Hey Greg, If you are looking for a ‘play-through’ DS case, I heartily recommend the Nerf one. It turns the DS into a tank, and it’s totally nerd hip.

And I feel your pain, Matt. I’m stuck with dial-up, I have zero options otherwise. I don’t even think I could do the satellite deal, my house is on a wooded lot, and I don’t have a clear view of the sky. Fortunately I have enough of a hole in the canopy to point at most of the DirecTV satellites, although I can’t get the local channels (that satellite is hiding behind a tree, apparently).
