07/11/2007: Summer Megaparty: Pokemon Diamond.

I really, really love Pokemon Diamond, and I think you will, too. It’s very much in the same spirit as all of the other Pokemon games, and while nothing will match the original thrill of sifting through Celadon City on the hunt for a free Eevee, Diamond (and Pokemon Pearl) just spin the idea into something so immense and involved that it’s nearly impossible to put the DS down once you get into a groove.

It’s the kind of game that requires a lot of patience, not because it’s in any way difficult, but because you’ll be tempted to “finish the levels already” and skip all of the little cool things lurking around just about everywhere. Like, you’ll go into a hundred different houses and know that no more than six of them will have anything you even remotely need, and yet, you’re cheating yourself if you don’t start a conversation with every person and electronic device found inside, because that’s the thrill — all of the exploration.

I’ve clocked nearly six hours of play at press time, and I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’ve only got one of the eight gym badges, so on a conservative estimate, there’s at least thirty hours solid of play before things start winding down.

I’m late to the dance on this recommendation, but I’ll make it anyway: Buy this game. Then trade me a Charmander, because I really want one. (Yes, you can connect with your friends using the DS’s Wi-Fi capabilities, for battles and trades and slapped fives.)

Without further ado, my current Pokemon team:

My first Pokemon and team leader is “Monferno,” an evolved form of “Chimchar.” Monferno bests the rest by being a monkey and by having a tail that’s perpetually on fire. Second in command is “Luxio,” evolved from a “Shinx.” I kind of regret nicknaming him “Bluey” now that I see that his evolutionary track is only going to make him blacker, but even with a stupid name, he’s still a cool cat.

I’ve been trying to bring up a “Budew” as my team’s third-in-command, but he’s neck-and-neck with “Shellos,” a pink sea slug who may very well end up as my next mindless doodle the next time I’m on hold with the cable company.

In the fifth spot is “Geodude,” a G1 Pokemon who looks like a Swedish meatball. Rounding out the team is some beaver-esque thing called “Bidoof.” I’ve been thoroughly neglecting Bidoof because he looks like an asshole on my battle screen. Sucks, because he looked really cool from the front.

Also of note: When I picked up the game, a nearby clearance rack caught my eye. I’m ten bucks poorer, but one Pikachu DS carrying case and a few Pokemon cartoons richer:

Do they still make those Game Boys Advance Video cartridges? Always seemed like a dumb idea to me, but I have a terrible track record when it comes to turning down any Toys ‘R’ Us product with a red clearance sticker. Mmmm. The cartridge includes two full episodes of the Pokemon cartoon, and one of those two is all about Ho-Oh. I’ve been saving it for my next long bus ride into the city, but now that I think about it, I’m going to feel way too dumb watching Pokemon on a corporate commuter bus. Maybe I can fashion my DS some kind of cardboard shield.

And now that I think about it some more, the Pikachu carry case is sized for the DS Lite, not the bulky old model I’m still rocking. I wasted ten bux. :(

I don’t know if anybody watches Psyche (it’s fairly goofy but one of my housemates is into it so I’ve watched it a few times) but Tim Curry’s on this Friday’s episode playing a Simon Cowell-alike. Just a heads up.
I only have a PSP and a Wii so I can’t join in the DS love :( I can’t wait for the new Smash Brothers.

Mystie

Honestly, only you know the answer to that question. More often than not you can sober up enough to get to work (or school) if you commit to it and stop drinking and try to get sleep. Then again, if you have gone past the point of no return, then have another, try to make the most of the night, and skip school.

Only you know if you have gone past the point of no return.

Still, I vote B.

However I just finished eating a can of Chef Boyardee’s “Beef” Ravioli at 1:20 AM… so take my advice for what it’s worth.

This has nothing to do with the conversation, but I’ve watched it upwards of 100 times tonight and it’s STILL making me giggle.

Mystie, I say play hooky :D I’m assuming you’re usually good about going to class, so why not take a day for yourself once in awhile?

Dammit Magic Toe, you had to mention the Chef. Here goes spaghetti and meatballs.

Sorry guys, Pokemon for me follows the 2 minute glimpses I’ve seen of the show and the 10 minute gaming time I’ve had on the Advance, though I did find it fun.

Ghosted by ColonelCatsup @ 07/12/2007 3:04 AM EDT

I forgot to mention that I, too have the kind-of-old-school DS. It, as well as my pearl version, was actually “lent” to me by my gamer frat bro. (it’s a good chance he’s not getting either back anytime soon)

He also has the DS Lite and playing Pearl on both…Hmm. The GBA game fits more convincingly in the old school DS while the DS Lite has…light, and is a bit smaller. I was so used to the old school DS controls, so the start/select buttons are lower on the Lite than on the Old School one. So either is good, but I’m sticking with Old School.

And great find, DocDragon. What’s really weird is that the reversed version sounds VERY similar to the original Icelandic version.

Ohhh yeah, Pokemon Diamond! You rock, Matt! ;D I’ve been hooked on that game for months now; I have over 200 hours clocked on it. Sorry I can’t breed a Charmander for you. I have a Charizard on my main team, but he’s male. =( Let me know if you want a Phione or Munchlax. ;D

Norbert, my favorite Eevee evolutions are Umbreon and Leafeon. I got a female Eevee in the Trophy Garden, though, so I have all of them. ;D

ColonelCatsup

Hehe, glad I could contribute to someone else’s poor health for once.

I’m watching Vanishing Point for the first time tonight. So far, so good. Anyone else seen this 1971 muscle car (so-called) classic?

BTW, those “beef” raviolis aren’t sitting so good.

Ghosted by Magic Toe @ 07/12/2007 3:13 AM EDT

Haha, I’ve been saying Bidoof looks like a nasty turd from behind all along. You will learn to hate Bidoof, and later his evolved form, Bibarel. Where Bidoof looks like an asshole/turd from behind, Bibarel looks like a turd covered asshole who is also cross-eyed, but from the front.

I still haven’t beaten my copy of Pearl, though. I have all the badges, just not the willpower the beat the final length. I guess if you get that far I’ll have to go back and beat it.

I work at Toys ‘R’ Us, and those game boy video things went on clearance like a week after they came out…so I don’t think they’re too popular….so yeah, they probably don’t make them anymore.

I am pretty sure my boyfriend think I am disgusting for still eating Chef Boyardee regularly at the ripe ol’ age of 25. He gives me that grossed out look whenever I put some in the cart, and he never never eats any…more for me!

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 07/12/2007 5:17 AM EDT

Was running around the safari zone in diamond cuz they had psyducks running around in there…and I run into a shiny Bibarel…a sparkling giant turd mountain. But I got a couple of Psyducks to bad they don’t go psy ay ay.

In response to someone asking about the DS browser–
I bought one without reading the fine print, opened the wrapper without reading the fine print, and found a cartridge that was awkwardly-shaped and too small to fit into my old DS. Only then did I notice that some tiny words on the front of the box say “For DS Lite.” I’ve always been the type of person to impatiently rip off all the plastic wrap on my stuff the second I get in the car, but this $30 lesson has taught me not to do that anymore.

Ghosted by GloomyJack @ 07/12/2007 6:01 AM EDT

Heard the browser is horrible. No plugins are available for it so no flash and no java. The consensus is that it’s not really worth the money. Pretty sure other countries have the browser for the old DS. Plus there are homebrewed browsers out by now I’m sure.

Ghosted by Danny J @ 07/12/2007 6:05 AM EDT

Dig this shit. Between me and my sister, I had all five GBA Pokemon titles open to me. In case you didn’t know, slotting-in one of the GBA carts makes a handful of oldschool Pokemon appear for catching. I believe you need the National Dex first, though.

Right now, I think my ’seen’ count is in the lower 320s. My own count is nearing 170 or 180 or so. Roughly. You have to go to the PC and ask Prof. Oak there.

I’ve got every starter (GSC included) ported over save for two from Gen 3, and those’ll be coming in the next two days.

Ahh, the life of a Pokemon geek.

I think my girlfriend’s kid brother has all the GBA pokemon games I’ll probably just steal em…er i mean borrow…heh I wish there were more easily accessible G1 pokes in diamond and pearl I’d love a bulba and a squirtle…

Never really been much for the Pokemans, but I can’t really poke fun. I’ve spent the last week completely obsessing over Vampire – The Masquerade: Bloodlines ~ Long Title.

Now, I’m no fan of vampires. I’ve read enough terrible material in my day to treat anything vampire related as “highly suspicious.” But the game is on Steam for like twenty bucks, and the nearest game store is two hours away, and I really love all of Troika/Black Isle’s other stuff. Most of the people who worked on this game were also responsible for the Fallout games and Arcanum. So while on the surface you have a respectable horror RPG based on an established license, if you halfway pay attention you start to see all the cultural references, in-jokes, and random absurdities that made Fallout such a legendary game. It sort of takes the edge off the usual “I am slightly foreign and full of angst” vampire vibe. Plus, there’s a whole clan of insane vampires you can play that lets you get into an argument with a street sign.

And this has been another episode of Jedoc’s Unsolicited Game Advice.

I still have the old DS as well; the lite doesn’t seem to fit in my hands as easily, and I’ve gotten used to the size of the original.

Anyone on here ever play Phoenix Wright? You should be able to find the first one relatively cheap by now, the third one will be coming out in a few months… I’m finally finishing up the second one (I got busy and switched games), so I’m definitely looking forward to more courtroom battles. :)

Ghosted by DrSketch @ 07/12/2007 8:53 AM EDT

I played the first one been meaning to get the second and I guess the third now that that’s coming out. pretty good series I think Japan has like 6 of em already and they jus make a translation and add DS controls.

I’ve been sitting on the fence about diamond/pearl since it came out. Good thing friday is pay day. I’m grabbing it then. Norbert… Vaporeon is by far the best.

I’d love to give Diamond/Pearl a try (Yellow was my last Pokemon game), but I just can’t afford it right now, and I still want to get Final Fantasy III, too. Plus, I just picked up Final Fantasy IV (on clearance at a Kmart in the middle of no where for only 15 bucks, I couldn’t resist it!), so I’m working on that one…

Haven’t seen it, Magic Toe, though of course Death Proof made me want to. It’s playing nearby in the next few weeks so I’m interested in whether it’s worth checking out (Vanishing Point, that is. I’m already seeing Death Proof tomorrow :D ).

squee4242

You are seeing Death Proof alone? I am assuming Grindhouse has been split up. I know there was talk of that when the film first hit and some theaters around where I live even did it the second week. I contacted one of the theaters and was told that the studio had decided to split up the films in certain markets to see if they played any better. I suppose that means to check and see if they could make more money.

I watched a double-feature of Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry & Vanishing Point last night. Yes, it was without a doubt Tarantino-inspired. I had already seen DMCL a very long time ago, barely remembering it, but VP was a new experience. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

The style of the films, especially the sudden endings, definitely made me want to watch Death Proof again. Who knows when it will finally hit DVD.

Norbert: If you want, I can get you the icelandic version with raunchy subtitles.

Shaunfu – Yeah you probably are getting a Babies R Us. I know our store is moving in like 2 years and we’re going to have one, then. Thank God. I’m so sick of hearing people bitch that there isn’t one nearby. Actually the Target owner guy took over about a year or two ago, but we’ve had so many f’ed up changes over that time span, they can’t make up their minds as to what they want to do as a “standard”.

I don’t think our distribution centers are changing any, so there shouldn’t really be a decrease in toy supply.

Cotter – I haven’t seen one Halloween item enter the store yet, except for infant costumes of the “shirt and pants painted to look like a skeleton” variety. Thankfully it’s still early, and though I have no hope for seeing much other than costumes, I’ll keep you updated. :D But yeah, the past 2 years at my store has absolutely sucked for Halloween goods.

Magic Toe, last I heard they were saying possibly September for the Death Proof DVD; no word on the Planet Terror release though. I can’t wait to see the extended versions of both, but I’m seeing the regular Grindhouse release tomorrow. I am inordinately excited about this, considering I’ve already seen it twice.

You can breed Charizard with a Ditto. You find it on Rte 218 with the pokeradar, which also requires National Dex. (it takes a while to find it, though)

As for the Old Starters, you need to transfer them from the GBA game to PAL Park in Diamond/Pearl, but you need National Dex first. You get the Kanto & Hoenn Starters in their respective games (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, FireRed/Leafgreen) but the Johto starters are a bit trickier…You get one after completing the Hoenn Dex in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.

With Eeveelutions…I agree that I love Vaporeon, but 1) my original Eevee back in Red was a Vaporeon 2) It was luckily female when I transferred it to Silver so I was able to breed it. 3) I already have a good water type (Empoleon) 4) I’m thinking of evolving it to Flareon, as I need a solid fire type.

And I’ll take that Phione. My FC is 1976 6905 0153. Sadly, I can only access WiFi every once in a while, as I don’t have it in my house.

I was about to get into Pokemon when it first became popular (I watched a show or two. I played one of the games,) but then it got too complicated with Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Chartreuse, and so on.

For me, there’s not a big enough difference between the old DS and the DS Lite, so I’ve been sticking with the former.

I REALLY want to transfer my old pokemon into Pokemon Diamond. I’ve put over 40 hours in so far and I’m STILL working on that stupid national dex. It’s a pain I tell ya. A pain.

Norbert – will I be able to breed a -male- Charizard with Ditto? If that is so, this turns around everything I thought I knew about Pokemon breeding. >.> I was under the impression that only females would reproduce, even with Dittos.

I think I already have you registered in my pal pad from the last time there was a big Pokemon discussion in this blog. Let me dig mine up: 4124 1605 7416. I’ll go stuff Manaphy in the daycare with a sexy Ditto. Oh yeah, I can get on wifi anytime I’m home, so feel free to message me on AIM at Oh My Gackt or Yahoo at ayachansenpai to let me know when you can get on.
