Summer Megaparty: Pokemon Diamond.

I really, really love Pokemon Diamond, and I think you will, too. It's very much in the same spirit as all of the other Pokemon games, and while nothing will match the original thrill of sifting through Celadon City on the hunt for a free Eevee, Diamond (and Pokemon Pearl) just spin the idea into something so immense and involved that it's nearly impossible to put the DS down once you get into a groove.

It's the kind of game that requires a lot of patience, not because it's in any way difficult, but because you'll be tempted to "finish the levels already" and skip all of the little cool things lurking around just about everywhere. Like, you'll go into a hundred different houses and know that no more than six of them will have anything you even remotely need, and yet, you're cheating yourself if you don't start a conversation with every person and electronic device found inside, because that's the thrill -- all of the exploration.

I've clocked nearly six hours of play at press time, and I've barely scratched the surface. I've only got one of the eight gym badges, so on a conservative estimate, there's at least thirty hours solid of play before things start winding down.

I'm late to the dance on this recommendation, but I'll make it anyway: Buy this game. Then trade me a Charmander, because I really want one. (Yes, you can connect with your friends using the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities, for battles and trades and slapped fives.)

Without further ado, my current Pokemon team:

My first Pokemon and team leader is "Monferno," an evolved form of "Chimchar." Monferno bests the rest by being a monkey and by having a tail that's perpetually on fire. Second in command is "Luxio," evolved from a "Shinx." I kind of regret nicknaming him "Bluey" now that I see that his evolutionary track is only going to make him blacker, but even with a stupid name, he's still a cool cat.

I've been trying to bring up a "Budew" as my team's third-in-command, but he's neck-and-neck with "Shellos," a pink sea slug who may very well end up as my next mindless doodle the next time I'm on hold with the cable company.

In the fifth spot is "Geodude," a G1 Pokemon who looks like a Swedish meatball. Rounding out the team is some beaver-esque thing called "Bidoof." I've been thoroughly neglecting Bidoof because he looks like an asshole on my battle screen. Sucks, because he looked really cool from the front.

Also of note: When I picked up the game, a nearby clearance rack caught my eye. I'm ten bucks poorer, but one Pikachu DS carrying case and a few Pokemon cartoons richer:

Do they still make those Game Boys Advance Video cartridges? Always seemed like a dumb idea to me, but I have a terrible track record when it comes to turning down any Toys 'R' Us product with a red clearance sticker. Mmmm. The cartridge includes two full episodes of the Pokemon cartoon, and one of those two is all about Ho-Oh. I've been saving it for my next long bus ride into the city, but now that I think about it, I'm going to feel way too dumb watching Pokemon on a corporate commuter bus. Maybe I can fashion my DS some kind of cardboard shield.

And now that I think about it some more, the Pikachu carry case is sized for the DS Lite, not the bulky old model I'm still rocking. I wasted ten bux. :(

Honestly, I’m not a fan of the new Pokemon. I think they should’ve stopped at Yellow. Reminds me of Power Rangers. The original was flipping awesome (well, when I was five) but now it’s become so bastardized that it’s almost a giant fuck you to the original series. :/ Honoes, it’s killing my childhood! D:

I’ll still watch the original series if it’s on Cartoon Network. :D

Thank you, Matt, for once again helping me figure out a good way to blow part of my quarterly bonus.

Bidoof? I’m talking about the oldschool DS, foo’ :P It’s so gray, and the screens are so dark. I’m glad I didn’t buy a DS until last year.

Also, I will not be talked into buying a Pokemon game. No, no, no. But I will keep switching my ava back to May for all of my tenure at Shrine, I can make you that promise.

I was real skeptical about Pokemon Diamond when I got mine. I mean, I had Red/Blue way back when, but after that I sorta fell out of the Pokemon scene. I come back to find that there’s now 500 Pokemon to collect…and what’s this I hear about DOUBLE battles?!

But man, Diamond/Pearl is great. I’ve got over 100 hours of playtime and I haven’t even cleared the Elite Four yet. Pokemon breeding; there’s just something about it that’s so addicting.

I too still have the old clunky DS. Really though, the Lites look so small that I wonder if my hands would cramp while I play it. I have a hard time with games that don’t use the stylus on the DS I have now, and my hands are pretty small.

Seriously, does anyone have both? Can anyone compare the way you hold them? I don’t want a Lite if my hands are going to be useless claws after an hour.

Sorry for the double post, but I have to add that Advance Wars is the best DS game I’ve played. Also, the Metroid game was awful.

“no more than six of them will have anything you even remotely need, and yet, you’re cheating yourself if you don’t start a conversation with every person and electronic device found inside, because that’s the thrill — all of the exploration”

And this is why I will never understand the appeal of these sorts of games. Hours of repetitive nothing just to get a randomly placed something does not sound like my idea of a good time.

Hypocritically, I don’t apply the same standards to my movie watching, as I’ll sit through an hour and a half of boring in a poorly made ’80s slasher movie for the five minutes of sex and violence interspersed throughout.

You’ll love Diamond, Matt. One of my favorite things that I’ve found, since beating the E4, is that after you do that, A LOT more PokéMon will become available for you to catch. Between Pearl and Diamond I beliefe that you can get all but about 50 Pokés. Also, if you trade Friend Codes with people, when you are trading or battling over WiFi, you can actually talk through your DS…yeah, kicks ass.

If ya wanna battle or trade sometime (with a complete stranger, worry not, I won’t molest ya), let’s trade FCs.

I have never understood Pokemon, ever. And this does not bother me.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 07/11/2007 10:39 PM

Ubu: Yeah, I get what you’re saying — and certainly, if you’re used to more dynamic action games, something like this can get really tedious. But I’m so far from a gamer and so much closer to someone who doesn’t want to think or try too much during his downtime that it’s good for me. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/11/2007 10:46 PM

Ehh, as much as “Diamond” intrigues me, I’m not buying a DS. Then again, I used to love playing my brother’s original Pokemon Red game on his old purple Game Boy, so maybe if I ever have the money, I will break down and try this.

Besides, the monkey with the flaming tail is just cool.

Yeah when I got a gba (my first and only game boy) the first game I got was pokemon crystal. It was fun, but like the fate of most of the times I play a video game, I got stuck and whatever I did I couldn’t get through so I stopped. My cousin was about 10 and he got me through that part (it was a battle dont’ remember what gym it was) and played a little bit farther then that and I didn’t know what to do next so I stopped and haven’t played since. I don’t play modern video games anymore I play older games like snes, nes, and pogo. simple games. But when I used to play modern games I used to love Morrowwind. That was a really good RPG and I loved to wander around and kill animals, steal things, buy things, do jobs for people, talk to people etc. Great times. I just think it’s a waste of effort now even though I want a Wii just to play warioware and wiisports and such. I tell myself ok when you loose your temper you won’t play anymore, I do that because if I take it too seriously it’s going too far.

Chestnuts roasted by Goob @ 07/11/2007 11:04 PM

I’m too old for the pokemon thing, but I’ve talked to a number of younger gamers who have been turned on to “real” RPGs thanks to pokemon….so I approve.

Chestnuts roasted by Mr King @ 07/11/2007 11:07 PM

I think Pokemon was precisely the time I had to make the suicide jump off the toy fad train into adulthood…I was down with the Pikachu phase because I have a brother 2 years younger than me but once he started getting into details I knew it was time for me to get a job and give the working world a try… HOWEVER i DO have a DS Lite…and it is my best friend.

Chestnuts roasted by ellaenchanted @ 07/11/2007 11:31 PM

I wonder (rhetorically) what constitutes too old for Pokemon. Unless it’s like, 80, I have a feeling I’m entering the territory so I don’t wanna know.
I really like how the Megaparty is letting us get a peek at whatever random thing you’re into at a given moment. Not that the blog isn’t always like that, but it’s on a schedule.

Does anyone have the web browser for the ds? If so, how do you like it?

Chestnuts roasted by racinjason @ 07/12/2007 12:05 AM

They don’t make anything cool for the real DS. I mean, as opposed to the DS lite. That thing is for pansies.

Chestnuts roasted by Hazzard @ 07/12/2007 12:25 AM

I was in NYC back in May, and when I bought Paper Mario I got a free Pokemon Diamond/Pearl DS holder. For something that was free, it’s pretty sturdy. Though, I’ve had my DS since it came out and I haven’t bought a game for it. Actually, I have a GameCube and only one game as well. But I’ve got a Wii and my Nintendo collection is starting to pan out again after my love affair with the XBox. Though I am saving my pennies for a 360.

That clearance sticker reminds me- I sould really get my butt into the Toys R Us sometime this summer. Walking the toy aisles at Target made me want to go back to being seven.

Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 07/12/2007 12:40 AM

I, too, am one with an old school DS. I’ve been meaning to get a pretty black one, but I just never get around to it. But yeah – the screen on mine is WAY dark compared to the new ones.

The repetition was bugging me, on Pearl, so I haven’t fired it up in ages. I know I have at least 3 of those pictured above, though. Piplup was my #1, but he morphed into something bigger and not as cute.

I have a TRU update for you all… Those neon orange clearance stickers? They are going by the wayside. Since the guy that owns (or used to own, I forget) Target now owns us, we are now NOT Garvey tagging anything (unless it’s in a bin) and we will have little plastic “flag” things on the shelves, and that’s it. No more damn signs saying how much it was and is. We are literally turning into the Target toy store.

If your TRU still has the X shaped fixtures in each section, look for those to be gone soon, too, and replaced with straight aisle and a more “open” feel.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/12/2007 1:06 AM

See? And when I was bitching about not being able to get Pokemon Diamond the second it came out, you totally thought I was over reacting.

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 07/12/2007 1:19 AM

Ryane I was wondering what was up with my TRU…I thought it was just because they were adding a Babies R Us or something to the store, but a new owner? And Target, nonetheless? That’s nuts. I hope our TRU does not become like our Target, because our Target sucks at stocking new toys and games; their toy shelves are actually empty 80% of the time :P and it takes them days if not weeks to put out new video games.

Chestnuts roasted by Shuanfu @ 07/12/2007 1:39 AM

Ryane,

I hope to God that doesn’t mean there won’t be a Halloween section this year? That was my one stop shop for everything spooky.

I had an overage of rum and coke tonight. Do I….

A. Skip school tomorrow
B. Try to sober up between now and 7am?
