Summer Megaparty: Micro Magic French Fries!

It's July! We still have a month of Megapartying to go! Let's start with potatoes.

As a kid, any excuse to use that wonderful thing called a "microwave" was a good one, but even without the thrill of cooking my own food like a superstar, I still would've adored "Micro Magic" fries.

There was a whole line of Micro Magic microwaveable foods available in the '80s, but the fries...there was nothing on the planet like those fries. They were kind of like the fries you'd get on the hot lunch line at school, assuming you took them home in a napkin, chilled them, and nuked them back to the appropriate level of hot, oily fun. After opening the boxes, you zapped 'em right inside the package, which served the dual purpose of making the fries taste something like cardboard and making the cardboard smell something like fries. They were crude, disgusting and absolutely delicious.

I went on a little Internet hunt that took me to the poorly translated webpages of Japan, where the Micro Magic line has evidently lived on for all of these years. I've never had much of an interest in world travel, but for these fries, I think I'd do it. From what I could gather, they're pretty common over there.

I really should credit the blog I found the picture above on, but I totally lost it. Had like fifteen tabs open in Firefox, all in Japanese, and I just got overwhelmed. Sorry, mystery blog. I owe you one.

What are some of the foods you wish you could eat one more time? Answer in the comments!

This is just something personal to me, but I am originally from the southern Louisiana area and now I live in D.C.
I have now NONE of the foods I grew up with.
I asked a guy at a restaurant for Crawfish etoufee and he looked at me like I had just asked for Urainium.
—sigh—

Aliquis–YES! That’s what those snacks were called I was talking about! Keebler Krunch Twists!

Me again.

Those granola bars I was talking about? Maybe they are Nature Valley Granola Clusters? Except that now they make a product of the same name which are small, crunchy clusters of granola.

ANyone? Anyone?

I totally remember those Micro Magic Fries. Me & my brother would nuke some cheese whiz with the fries. I remember them being pretty expensive, plus you only got 3 boxes in a pack. So, mom didn’t get them that often for us.

One of the foods I wish I could eat again is the original Jello Pudding Pops. Yes, I know that ‘Popsicle’ has brought them back, but I swear it’s not the same recipe. They aren’t the same shape either.

Fox It was called a super bar, it consisted of three portions, a salad bar, italian section, and Mexican.

I have some Otter pops in my freezer, I bought them at wal-mart on a nostalgic whim and I am dissapointed with the portion sizes. I had tube type of popsicles before a couple of years ago and it seems like the portions are smaller. And how can they figure out to help you be able to rip the top off without scissors? They don’t have the long stretch character on them anymore that I remember, just little logos.

I forgot to mention, Ice cream cones cereal! With little sugar cones and balls that were the ice cream. That was really good stuff. I am glad though my Grandma usually bought the regular cereals, froot loops, cinnamon toast crunch, cocoa puffs etc. but sometimes she would get a coupon for a new cereal I got honored to try. Urkel-O’s anybody? I still have the flipbook/autograph book that came out of it.

Fruit island cereal was another good one, we still have the offical secret pen someplace, the last time I smelled it it still smelled like fruity cereal.

Also the old style of fruit roll ups that were circle and with little seeds if they were strawberry. They should of put out (they can still do this) the old ones and the new ones and see how everyone favors.

Ok I am clicking post now I don’t want this to be another novel!

I would kill or die to get my hands on Flaky Flix cookies. Mothers cookies makes/made them and they are the BEST COOKIES EVER!!! Wafers with creamy vanilla or fudge goodness covered in chocolate and cereal flakes.

Also, my high school had the most awesome combo of bagel/cream cheese/sausage links. I have tried many times to recreate this flavor at home with my own stuff but the cheap crap they buy for the schools is somehow better and I cannot get it just right.

I used to eat Taco Bell’s Bell Beefer as a kid. Loved that thing. And I was a huge fan of all micro magic food. And yes, Surge is sorely missed.

Slushers, without a doubt.

Anybody remember those?

They were these frozen juice cup things you mashed with a spoon. Them boys was tasty.

I had to come out of lurking around for this one. I have overly fond memories of my grade school’s hot lunches (especially the mashed potatoes)that I’ve never been able to replicate no matter how hard I’ve tried.

And being a child of the ’70s, I miss the old Willy Wonka Oompa-Loompa candy. Does anyone else remember that? They were similar to M&Ms, but bigger (and better, I thought). The “ogre-sized” peanut butter M&Ms out today remind me of them, but they’re just not quite the same.

I also miss Dino-Sour Eggs (also a Wonka candy, I think). They were huge jaw-breakers that wore down layer by layer, changing colors with each one, until you got down to the super sour candy middle that had a sandy texture. God, those were great. I remember that my Dad bought a WHOLE BOX of Dino-Sour eggs from a wholesale store and parceled them out to my two brothers and me one a day for a summer. My Dad also used to come home from work with small brown bags of candy (Chik-0-Stiks, hard candy, chocolate, all kinds of stuff) hidden on his person and laugh while my brothers and I climbed all over him to find them.

And does anyone else have fond memories of eating frozen french-fries cooked in a Fry Daddy–soaked in oil and fried crisp and brown–without a single daggone iota of guilt? Wow…those truly were the days.

Oh god, so many things I miss from when I was little. I would kill for a bag of Keebler O’Boisies chips right now, my mom used to get them and we’d all fight over them. And I don’t know if anyone remembers them, but Quackers- little cheese crackers shaped like ducks. I also miss the Super Mario ice cream bars, with the gum ball nose. Mmmm, delicious memories. I would add Dipsy Doodles onto this list, but recently they resurfaced in the single serving size in the vending machine near my office. :D

Chestnuts roasted by Beth @ 07/02/2007 6:00 PM

Yes, I dined many o’ times on Quackers and loved them. Basically the same as Goldfish but shaped like ducks. Just for good measure i would like to add Mr. Phipp’s pretzel chips. This site has some products that are not commonly found everywhere and be sure to check out the “Boy They Were Good, But…” section to see that many people miss the same products we do but unfortunately are not available anymore. They also provide some new names for old products!

Someone asked after Squirt, yes? I’d search the thread but I’m on my (brand new, mobile X-E enabling :D ) Treo. Anyway, I saw some today at a restaurant so it’s still out there.

I absolutly miss TMNT Cereal. Such a simple mixture of chex (I think they were call ninja nets) and marshmallows that no company has reproduced since.

Another fave was Peanut Butter Snickers. I swear my local gas station kept them in stock just for me. Me hungry.
