07/01/2007: Summer Megaparty: Micro Magic French Fries!

It’s July! We still have a month of Megapartying to go! Let’s start with potatoes.

As a kid, any excuse to use that wonderful thing called a “microwave” was a good one, but even without the thrill of cooking my own food like a superstar, I still would’ve adored “Micro Magic” fries.

There was a whole line of Micro Magic microwaveable foods available in the ’80s, but the fries…there was nothing on the planet like those fries. They were kind of like the fries you’d get on the hot lunch line at school, assuming you took them home in a napkin, chilled them, and nuked them back to the appropriate level of hot, oily fun. After opening the boxes, you zapped ‘em right inside the package, which served the dual purpose of making the fries taste something like cardboard and making the cardboard smell something like fries. They were crude, disgusting and absolutely delicious.

I went on a little Internet hunt that took me to the poorly translated webpages of Japan, where the Micro Magic line has evidently lived on for all of these years. I’ve never had much of an interest in world travel, but for these fries, I think I’d do it. From what I could gather, they’re pretty common over there.

I really should credit the blog I found the picture above on, but I totally lost it. Had like fifteen tabs open in Firefox, all in Japanese, and I just got overwhelmed. Sorry, mystery blog. I owe you one.

What are some of the foods you wish you could eat one more time? Answer in the comments!

does anyone remember the oreo brownies? or the cookies (made by keebler) that were little shortbread cookies with a hershey kiss in the middle? those were amazing..

I want KFC to bring back Chicken Littles.

Also, someone mentioned Jell-O Pudding Pops– I actually found those at a Wal-Mart not too long ago. You better believe I bought them.

I remember those fries! when I was a chubby 12 year old I ate my fair share of those tiny boxes (any my friend’s too, much to his dismay)
and i’ll second the chicken littles!
mmmm mayonnaise-y

Dammit. All I’ve got rolling around the noggin’ is a lame emo comment about how I’d want chicken nachos while sitting across from a certain someone again. I just woke up, so I’m going to blame this on a stupid dream I just had. Of all the times….

All three of mine are cereal. Alphabits when they were still sweetened (I bought a box a while ago and discovered, to my horror, they tasted like an even more bland Cheerios), Ghostbusters cereal and Fruity Yummy Mummy.

Dunkaroos and P.B. Crisps

Oh, I forgot Twix cookies.
They were not around for long, but oh man, were the amazing.

Ghosted by Somethin' Funny @ 07/01/2007 2:12 PM EDT

oh yeah, and josta

Does anybody remember Cornquistadors? They were like little tortilla tubes with some kind of flavoring… stuff inside. Kind of looked like Combos. I never hear anybody talk about them, maybe i’m the only one who ever loved them, poor Cornquistadors. Oh, and Squirt was The best citrusy soda ever.

Ghosted by Brian @ 07/01/2007 2:16 PM EDT

All my good ones have been taken – props on Bonkers and the Nintendo cereal…dat shat wuz nasty, but we all had to have it.

I really wish we in the states could get some of the snacks they have in the UK. I know, I know, UK peeps wish it the other way around. Whenever a friend of mine used to coem and visit, they would always bring me a baggie of snacks…I loved them so much. And everytime I watch Spaced I remember the oddly goodness that is a Jaffa Cake…

On another topic, living in Alabama again has reminding me of my southern roots. We have amny things in this great state…but did you know we had leprachauns??

Hey Matt…first post, but I’ve been reading this site religiously for a few years now.

I’ve posted a few of these previously on my own blog, but I’m missing these so much:

- E.T. Cereal – imagine chocolate- and peanut butter-flavored Alpha Bits with a limited vocabulary. Really delicious. The closest I’ve tasted is Reese’s Puffs. Just not the same, though.

- Frusen Gladje ice cream – this was soft gourmet ice cream that came in little white tubs. My maw-maw used to buy them all the time, and it would be our special treat.

- Pac-Man pasta – in any of the three varieties, Plain, Meatball, or Chicken Soup. I know all Chef Boyardee pastas are basically the same, but I bought these babies up until they stopped production and forced me. I recall our local co-op store carried them well into the early ’90s.

- just about ANY TMNT food products, especially the pies. That old article opened up a floodwave of tastebud memories.

- Showbiz Pizza – pre-Chuck E Cheese Showbiz Pizza is one of the best I recall ever tasting

Great website, and have a great 4th of July everyone!

Oops, it seems they’re called Corn Quistos. The cornquistador was their mascot. Anyway, they were godly.

Another thing I really miss is the pizza rectangles my school cafeteria would serve every Friday. Nostalgia has most likely sweetened that memory a bit, but still…

Well I would say Vinalla Coke but it’s back! Not in Canada yet but this is why I in a boarder town.

I would love to have a Fintstones Push Pop again, I was a fan of the strawberry flavour. I also want an ice cream bar called Freaky Feet. When I was about 7 I went to England with my rents and whenever we saw a Dickie Dee I would get a Freaky Foot, they were white and blue striped and the big toe was covered in a chocolate shell. I went over the pond again in high school but I wasn’t able to find them.

Happy Canada Day!

Choco. Tacos.

And those little cups of jello with the semi-gelatinous fruit inside.

Wow July 4th really snuck up on me. Time to dust off the ol’ Independence Day tape.

Ghosted by Cotter @ 07/01/2007 2:25 PM EDT

I forgot to say McDonalds pizza, only because I want to know if it tates like I remember it tates. It was gross but I loved it anyway!

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 07/01/2007 2:25 PM EDT

McDonald’s Pizza!? What food haven’t they adopted and filled with freeze dried shit? Sounds intriguing, though… I will hunt them down.

Ghosted by Cotter @ 07/01/2007 2:29 PM EDT

Ellios pizza? do they still make ellios pizza? the pepperoni is wonderful..

Ghosted by Andrew @ 07/01/2007 2:36 PM EDT

Everyone seems to remember the Jell-O Pudding Pops, but most people fail to mention the glory of the Jell-O Gelatin Pop. I absolutely loved those. When they decided to re-introduce the Pudding Pop a few years ago I was ecstatic, but the joy was short lived as it quickly made me miss my Gelatin Pops even more.

As someone else mentioned I also really miss Kentucky Fried Chicken’s Chicken Littles. Also Hardee’s used to make a mean pork tenderloin sandwich.

BTW… Jeremy Whatsisface… click my name for a trip down memory lane.

One of my favorite things had to be Super Mario Bros. gummy fruit snacks. They had a little continuous contest where if you came across a blue princess then you mailed it in and got a free t-shirt.

I’ll never forget the day I watched my brother put it in his mouth and chew it.

Sigh.

Ghosted by Jess @ 07/01/2007 3:03 PM EDT

Does anyone but me remember Sobe Love Bus Brew? The stuff was so disgusting and yet so awesome. It slowly disappeared and I was able to find and drink my last bottle like 2 or 3 years ago. I also can’t find any place to buy it on the Internet. Was anyone but me a fan of this stuff?

Ghosted by Kurdt @ 07/01/2007 3:05 PM EDT

Vienetta!!! I forgot.

Striped Chips Ahoy.

Squeezeit juice.

I’m done. By the way, does anyone remember Garfield Chocolate soda? I can’t remember if this was a dream or I actually had this.

In reference to the change from skunk to bear asshole yesterday, that’s a big asshole.

Ghosted by Bill @ 07/01/2007 3:06 PM EDT

Wait — what?! They still make Dunkaroos. In fact, you can buy them at Amazon Grocery, hopping kangaroo on the box and all. And RageTreb you’re talking about Koala’s March cookies from Japan, also available at Amazon grocery as well as various asian groceries.

Hey did they take Mickey Mouse ice cream bars back off the market? I haven’t seen them in a while and I’ve been getting some testy e-mails.

im always last to post but i agree with the ET cereal, smurfs cereal, pizzarias chips, and the mighty C3P0s cereal. I also ate Micro Magic Burgers.

Ghosted by Jay @ 07/01/2007 3:17 PM EDT

yeah, i was gonna ask if anyone else ever tried the micro magic burgers…

i never did….

Ghosted by Andrew @ 07/01/2007 3:18 PM EDT

It would have to be The Incredibles cereal for me. It was the ultimate sweet cereal, a box filled with six-pointed-star-shaped pieces that each tasted like a cross between the yellow barrels and the red Crunchberries in Captain Crunch. An absolute delight that also turned milk red.

Ghosted by Der Super @ 07/01/2007 3:19 PM EDT

entenmann’s almond squares, they were awesome but now discontinued

Ghosted by Jay @ 07/01/2007 3:21 PM EDT

Oh yeah….i forgot REGULAR marshmallow Krispies. Not the uber-disgusting Fruity Marshmallow Krispies they tortured us with. Also the ulitimate junk food: Pizzarias! These chips were made from pizza dough with our favorite pizza toppings powderized and spread genrously over ever bite. Keebler is really good at taking away my fave junk food…first Magic Middles and then Pizzarias. BLASPHEMY!

I vote for Jello 1-2-3, the weird jello mix that separated into three layers. The top was foam, the bottom was jello, and the middle was.. foamy jello. Good times.

Oooh, I just thought of another one. Golden Grahams Treats.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 07/01/2007 3:52 PM EDT

fend- How could i forget Jell-o 1-2-3!!??? I only had it once and it was fucking incredible. I remember seeing an online recipe to make them a lil while back but I doubt it would be the same…

Surge
Josta
Nerds Cereal
Donkey Kong Cereal
Original Cookie Crisp with Cookie Jarvis on the box.
Dinky Donuts cereal
Freakies Cereal (We are the Freakies, we are the Freakies, this is the Feakies Tree…)
Pac-Man Frozen Treat, with that great lemon flavor.
those rainbow suckers, when they used to be made point up, away from the stick, not point down, like now.
Long, flat Jolly Rancher slabs.
Rondo citrus soda
Those Tunnel of Fudge microwavable cake mixes.
That one powder-like candy that came in the little plastic spaceships that you could link together into intricate clumpy space stations.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 07/01/2007 4:02 PM EDT

Wow, lots of good ones…I’ll name some that I know have been mentioned, but I still want to eat them!!

Bonkers
Magic/Mini Middles
I also liked the Gelatin Pops!
Burple!! With the expanding container!
Marshmallow Rice Krispies, with the barrel shaped marshmallows! those were great!
PB Crisp, totally! and Bar None.
Someone said the original Fun Fruits fruit snacks, hell yes. The little ones that kinda looked like raisins, with no damn cartoon characters, and they tasted way better than todays fruit snacks.
The original Chicken McNuggets, with the dark meat ones.

my g/f says Smurfberry Crunch and Skor bars.

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 07/01/2007 4:09 PM EDT

oops, sorry,

Crystal Clear Pepsi totally. Forever!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 07/01/2007 4:17 PM EDT

I came across Choco Tacos at the Hostess store last weekend. Better believe I bought them. Corn Pops are definitely still around too.
I’m signed up for this international snack exchange over on LJ…I’m hoping I’m matched up with someone from the UK or Japan. Too bad frozen fries wouldn’t travel well. Wait, these ARE frozen, right?

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 07/01/2007 4:29 PM EDT

Holy crap, MICRO MAGIC FRIES!!! I ate those almost…all the time when I was a kid! It was the reason I was a fat little kid, I ate them practically every day back in elementary school…and then they were discontinued.

Stuff I’d want to eat again?

Pepsi Blue
Turtle Pie

I’ve never tasted a McRib or an Arch Deluxe, so I’d like to bring those back and eat them.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 07/01/2007 4:37 PM EDT

Kurdt: The SoBe Love Bus Brew shirt was the only one I ever spent money on. That stuff was so addictive.

Ghosted by Jedoc @ 07/01/2007 4:38 PM EDT

A few of the foods I’d like to taste again have been featured on this site.

Micro Magic Fries
C-3PO’s Cereal
Summit Canybars
Frisco Burger from Hardee’s.

Hardee’s is still around, but all of the stores have left the area. I don’t know if the Frisco Burger still survives though… It would come and go when we still had them locally.

Speaking of Corn Pops (no, I don’t have anything better to do) have you seen they’ve recently been released in the chocolate & peanut butter variety?

Ghosted by Mystie @ 07/01/2007 4:42 PM EDT

I second Jello 1-2-3, I love that stuff.

Ghosted by Brian @ 07/01/2007 4:43 PM EDT

Bill did a good job with the Fruit Bars and ROTJ cookies.
There was this microwave pizzas they sold in 6th grade that were phenomenal.
Here’s the big one X-Ers: NITRO Cola. I had it one time like in S. Carolina. Does anyone have ANY information about this product?

Matt, Kneg, and Invader Norbert, thanks for going out of your way last night but I don’t know anything about ENTOURAGE either.
Yes, I have seen the animated TRANSFORMERS movie but all I remember is “You’ve got the touch, you’ve got the Powerrrr!”

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 07/01/2007 4:47 PM EDT

OK Soda!!!!! I loved the crap outta that stuff!

Also
Microwave Brownies, I cannot remember who made them and they weren’t that good, but hot brownies in four minutes were amazing.
Pudding Pops, although freezing snack packs is a great substitution.
New York Seltzer
Giggles
Hardee’s Sourdough Bun Burgers, before they joined with Carl’s Jr
Oh, and it’s not food, but I wish Perkin’s would bring back their wishing well with the crappy toys. I lived for that when I was young and would always eat my little cowpolk so I could rummage through that thing and get the toys.

Ghosted by kb @ 07/01/2007 4:50 PM EDT

It seems you don’t actually reclose the box when microwaving them, just when you need to shake them loose. I’m ashamed that I didn’t correctly remember the exact instructions. I’m going to go Seppuku now.

Also, I used to get a pizza thing that was similar to pop tarts or toaster strudels, except pizza and they could easily be snapped in half into two triangles. I know some big brand made them but it’s lost on me right now.

I will have to echo Ben’s thought and choose a box of Nintendo cereal. One Christmas my brother, sister and I asked real hard for a Nintendo Entertainment System. On Christmas morning there was a box with a gift tag on it for all three of us. We huddled close, counted to three, and tore off the wrapping paper together to find…a box of Nintendo Cereal. The funny thing is, I suppose an unopened box of that would be worth quite a bit more now than an NES.

Oh, I would also love to bring back Fruit Wrinkles, Fizz Whiz, and Jiminy Cricket’s Wishing Stars Cereal. The cereal can be found here: http://www.lavasurfer.com/cereal-post5.html about ten entries from the top. According to that site, it must have come out when I was 3 or 4 years old, yet I plainly remember getting the Star Gazer thingy in a box of it and my parents helping me try it out in the backyard. If anybody else knows anything else about this cereal, I’d love to hear about it!

On a related note, it’s great to see Twix PB coming out. Now I know I wasn’t crazy for thinking there was a peanut butter version of Twix when I was little.

italian chicken sandwich from burger king. it was sooooo good!

Ghosted by crise @ 07/01/2007 4:55 PM EDT

I saw someone mention PB Crisp way up in the posts, and it reminded me of how much I miss PB Max candy bars. Anybody remember those? The peanut butter in the middle was more like the stuff out of the jar than any other peanut butter candy at the time. My government/economics teacher in high school had an open offer of free extra credit points for anyone that could find him a PB Max candy bar. Alas, the extra credit went unearned all year long.

Ghosted by Adam Bomb @ 07/01/2007 4:58 PM EDT

italian chicken sandwich from burger king. it was sooooo good!

The one they bring back periodically mcrib fashion that looks like their regular chicken sandwhich with gop on it or the original that was shaped like a more traditional sandwhich? They’re both good but I remember the original one being even better.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 07/01/2007 5:11 PM EDT

I second the Pizzarias! Those along with Tato Skins were staples for me. At least Tato Skins have been brought back.

Ghosted by Jack Sparrow @ 07/01/2007 5:11 PM EDT

Magic Toe, your web site is actually what sparked my remembered love for Showbiz Pizza. I have the fondest memories of the original Chuck E. Cheese…ours in Metairie, LA, had The King. There’s a thrift shop standing where it was.

And I have to agree with the Gelatin Pops. I have yet to find an ice cream bar that comes close. Popsicle put Pudding Pops back into production, but they’re thinner and not quite the same. And came up with a few more:

- Bonkers candy – Starburst is okay, but just doesn’t cut it for me thanks to the wonder of Bonkers. Loved watermelon flavor, and the commercials with the giant fruit falling on people.

- Pepsi Blue – the only soda I drank for a long time.

- Sobe Mr. Green – like a green-tinted heavily-caffeinated Dr. Pepper, only with a better taste and cool psycho lizard graphics on the label.

Enjoy!

KB :
I think I had one of the last cans of OK Soda, my brother lived in Austin at the time and found 1 12 pack left on a clearance shelf 6 months after they had discontinued it.. I savored those 12 cans, had 2 a month for a real great 6 months.. I wish I had saved the cans though.. I miss 1800IFEELOK, that was always fun.

I miss that zebra striped fruit gum, that stuff just had the best flavor.

I have an entire dead junk food meal planned.

First, I’d have a big bowl of Batman Returns cereal. That was chocolate Chex with marshmallows (BTW, Chex just came out with “Chocolate Chex” and they’re REALLY good!). Then, I’d have a McDonald’s Mc DLT with a side of Cool Ranch Munchies chips (those just died last year, at least in MY area). Then for desert, I’d have a Turtle pie AND a Choco Bliss! And I’d wash it all down with about 10 gallons of the wonderful Pepsi Blue!

But if I could only pick one of those, It’d hafta be Pepsi Blue. GOD I loved that stuff! Just to note, I recently called Pepsi’s consumer hotline and had 3 comments:
1) I really like Pepsi Summer Mix (which dispite what you may have read on the net, tastes NOTHING like Blue) and I hope it becomes available year round.
2) Please make Mountain Dew Baja Blast available in 12 paks and 2 liters.
3) BRING BACK PEPSI BLUE!!!!!!!!
Their response to my comments were, in order:
1) No
2) No
3) and no

Drats!

P.S. Pepsi’s hotline number is 1-800-433-2652. Everyone call them and tell them what dead Pepsi product YOU want back (*cough*pepsiblue*cough*)! Maybe they’ll listen if we all harass them!
