07/01/2007: Summer Megaparty: Micro Magic French Fries!
It's July! We still have a month of Megapartying to go! Let's start with potatoes.
As a kid, any excuse to use that wonderful thing called a "microwave" was a good one, but even without the thrill of cooking my own food like a superstar, I still would've adored "Micro Magic" fries.

There was a whole line of Micro Magic microwaveable foods available in the '80s, but the fries…there was nothing on the planet like those fries. They were kind of like the fries you'd get on the hot lunch line at school, assuming you took them home in a napkin, chilled them, and nuked them back to the appropriate level of hot, oily fun. After opening the boxes, you zapped 'em right inside the package, which served the dual purpose of making the fries taste something like cardboard and making the cardboard smell something like fries. They were crude, disgusting and absolutely delicious.
I went on a little Internet hunt that took me to the poorly translated webpages of Japan, where the Micro Magic line has evidently lived on for all of these years. I've never had much of an interest in world travel, but for these fries, I think I'd do it. From what I could gather, they're pretty common over there.
I really should credit the blog I found the picture above on, but I totally lost it. Had like fifteen tabs open in Firefox, all in Japanese, and I just got overwhelmed. Sorry, mystery blog. I owe you one.
What are some of the foods you wish you could eat one more time? Answer in the comments!

There is a diner - at least I hope it's still there - in or near Melbourne, FL. I can't recall the name, but it had a shark on the sign and the place was very blue. Anyway, this place had the whole 'dive diner' feel, but they had a mulit-paged menu divided into sections containing different types of food -American, Italian, etc. And this place was open 24/7. Now to the point: that place had anything we wanted at anytime and the food was always so amazing. I would kill to eat anything from that place again.
I also get cravings for snacks form the Rocky River Brewing Company near Cleveland, OH every now and then.
I know those aren't "foods from my childhood"; I'll work on those while I sleep

Magic Middles, Sweet Spots, Pop Qwiz, Dinersaurs cereal, and Sir Chomps a Lot. I know Chef Boyardee still make stiny little raviolis, but they're not the same without a crocodile on the label.

Foods I could eat one more time? Wow – that’s a tough one. If I had to make a choice right now, I’d say either Crystal Clear Pepsi or Luigi Berry soda from Shasta.
more of a beverage: Surge. I loved that stuff back in the day

I wish Burger King still had Cini Minis. If the late 90's had one thing to offer, it was those.

Boomstick @ 07/01/2007 5:34 AM EDT
The one thing that comes to mind is this kind of fruit snack from around 1991. I think they had horse-shaped(?) or other animal-shaped pieces, and I remember them being colored kind of like birthday cakes, white and pink and blue (each piece was multicolored). Maybe they were birthday cake-shaped? I remember really liking those things, and that I would sneak a package of them and eat them huddled in my closet when I was four. I don't remember much in terms of flavor or consistency, but I guess they were sort of chewy or something. It's a bit hard to describe. I guess it was sort of unique among fruit snacks. I wouldn't mind trying some of those again. I can almost remember how they tasted!

Sorry, I have one more idea for the jukebox. How about "Spin That Wheel" from the original Ninja Turtles Movie Soundtrack? It just seems to strike me as a party song.

Curly fries from Burger King. They used to bring them out every few months but they haven't in years where I live

Up until a couple of months ago I'd have said Frosted Krispies. I loved those as a kid. But I found them at Big Lots and decided to chance it because I'd been craving them for years and looking for them in vain up and down every cereal aisle. They were as good as I remember.
I would like to have this ice cream they used to make. It was soft serve in a papery cone thing, sort of like a bag you put frosting in to decorate a cake. I'd also like to find some Gatorade gum.

Wendy's bacon and cheese baked potato.
0re Ida makes microwaveable fries, but they're nothing to write home about.
Hooray for another month of Megapartying

Hershey's Hulk green syrup. Oh, and this wickedly dyed red, white, and blue 4th of July caramel corn from a little place in a random junk mall (it has a Bible Superstore, enough said) that also turned my fecal matter bright green.

The Colossus burger from Jack in the Box. I used to love those things when I was about 10 years old, and everyone was awed by my ability to usually almost finish them (I think they were like 3 meat patties and 3 kinds of cheese with bacon or something ungodly bad for you like that.)
I remember the commercials used to feature a 50 foot tall bald guy stomping around a city while crying, "I'm SOOOO hungry!"

Hey! I live in Britain where we still have these fries! Although they are called Mcain's Micro Chips. They've been around for as long as i can remember and have the same carboardy greasy taste that you mention! Plus they also do a Mirco Pizza which acts like a sponge to soak up grease!

Christmas Crunch…I've now gone two Christmases without them. =(
The old Trix, with the little sugary balls of original flavors.
I have been lurking for a while, but first post. I truly miss 'Almost home cookies' maybe they were a figment of my imagination because I can't find any mention of them anywhere. Every variety of them were delicious. I would totally fly to Japan if they had them there. Also, the original fingernail shaped 'Fun Fruits' fruit snacks…*drools*

I am in Australia so you probably not heard of many of these but here it goes.
Hubba-bubba Bubblegum juice- Bubble gum flavoured soda
Apple and Strawberry box juice
Summer of Pepsi strawberry flavour
Dr Pepper (came and went)
Mc Rib with shaker seasoning chips
Watermelon Jollyrancher
I will probably think of heaps later.

OH MY FUCKING GOD MICROMAGIC FRIES ARE IN JAPAN?!!??!?!?!?!?!?! Matt, you're taking me to Japan with you, you have no idea how much I worship these fries and how many people I'd kill to have them again. Seriously, this whole damn state isn't worth just one of those fries, so fucking good after you let them cool for 2 minutes.
I might have to stay away from this post.

Posted by
dohopoki @ 07/01/2007 10:22 AM EDT
You open the box, and then you reclose it but in a way that lets it vent, you microwave them for 2 minutes and then you let them cool for 2 minutes. You shake the box to loosen up the fries and then you season to taste.
I'd also put ketchup into the box and shake it again, making all the fries smothered in ketchup and eat them with a fork. I'm foaming at the mouth over here.

dohopoki @ 07/01/2007 10:28 AM EDT
Keebler used to make a snack chip called Pizzerias or Pizzarias….some spelling of the word….
anyway they were like doritos sort of, but only pizza flavored….they had cheese, pepperoni, and supreme.
I'd kill for an opportunity to eat supreme again.

… and if you cut into a frozen fry, though they were crinkle cut, you could actually peal off a thick layer of potato and inside, I swear, there would be shoe string style cut french fry. You couldn't tell this once they were cooked and I don't know why it would be like this, perhaps it was part of the secret to them being microwavable but it sure enough was the case. I use to hold the box in the right hand and I'd eat them mostly after 3 AM while watching Nick at Night or TV Land. I remember eating all 3 boxes in the pack while watching an episode of My Three Sons where they go fishing.
…

dohopoki @ 07/01/2007 10:45 AM EDT
The cheap meat pies they sell at mall food courts in Australia. You just can't get good meat pie in America, and all of the recipes I have found have so far failed to live up to the real thing. Meat pies in the UK are also very tasty, but they seem to include a lot more onion in the mix, and I'm not really a fan.

I'm told they still make these, but I haven't seen them in a decade: they were like hollow koala cookies with chocolate inside. Fuckin' delicious. Also, Dunkaroos, Squeez-Its, and PB Crisp, which were peanut butter-filled peanut shaped cookies made by Planters. Those didn't last very long, but they were damn good. Had a great commercial, too.

Posted by
RageTreb @ 07/01/2007 11:29 AM EDT
RangeTreb: Wow, I'd completely forgotten about PB Crisp. Those things were so ridiculously delicious.
So, Matt, what psychotic impulse led you to introduce a topic that would make us all crave unavailable foodstuffs? I was happy this morning, damn you!

Bar None candybar by Hershey, Tootie Fruit fruit snack, Croonchy Stars cereal (the one with the Swedish Chef on the box), Magic Middles, Smurfs Cereal, McLean Deluxe (yes, i actually liked it), Sodalicious fruit snacks. and many more i cannot remember at the moment

Good question! I would say Bonkers candy. I found a giant barrel of them in a Charleston, SC candy store. That was ten years ago and I'm sure they had been there 10 years before that.
Fruit Corners Fruit Bars: This was a supreme over kill of fruit snacks. It was like eating the bark from the funfruit tree.
Five Alive: It has to be from the concentrated frozen can.
Freakies Cereal: They have 2 minutes of immortality in the movie 'The Burbs.
ROTJ cookies: I have found memories of these. I'm sure they were no different than any other vanilla cookies but Jabbas and Lukes taste better.
Domino Pizza gum: It came in a box like pizza!
Strawberry Jello Pudding pops

Greg NA country where there is no Dr. Pepper! Madness!!! You can get it in the states at any grocery/convenience/soda machine. Sounds like you need to take a trip, or order some off of the interweb! And I believe they still sell Corn Pops, maybe not. A popcorn flavored cereal… we have pops… Hmm, a quest is in order!
I want me some Dunkaroos and these teddy bear cookies, they were kind of like teddy grams except on one side there was frosting. I can’t remember if the frosting was only on one side or if two cookies were put together like an Oreo, all I can remember is that they were fuckin’ awesome!
Ecto Cool Hi-C
Nintendo Double Boxed Mario & Legend of Zelda Cereal (even if they both tasted terrible)
Vanilla Pepsi
Everything else I eat or drink is still readily available… Especially those awesome microwavable/oven bakeable taquitos. Mmmmm…

Sorry to double post, but as soon as I hit post I remembered an old restaurant in town called the Potato Patch. Or Shack. There's another completely different place that serves baked potatoes, but that isn't this one. The one thing that made this place awesome (other than when I had my birthday party there a decade ago I got a PlayStation) was that there was a guy there that would throw dinner rolls at you. Think about it and realize how awesome it was.

I cannot believe that you brought those fries up. Unbelievable. I was ADDICTED to those as a kid and ever since have been on a quest to find the same tasting french fry. I succeeded. There is currently a line of microwavable fries made by Ore-Ida…they have "Extra Crispy Easy Fries." These are pretty much the same greasy, best when overly salted microwaveable fries that we loved as a kid. Around 4 minutes in the microwave…awesome. Try them.

In my quest to try and find that blog entry for Matt, I ran into the homepage of the Japanese manufacturer of Micro Magic:
http://www.otsukafoods.co.jp/product/micromagic/index.html
It's all in Japanese, of course, but pretty easy to see. The first item is a black sesame seed-covered sweet potato fry. The next is our good old regular french fry. Next is Micro Magic edamame (boiled, salted soybean). After that are versions of the french fry and edamame that have containers you can eat out of, ostensibly to walk around and eat out of. However, in Japan, it's rude to eat while walking, so I'm not sure why they make those. It looks like they have a pretty limited line up of these things over there. And, they're gonna set you back between $1.25 and $1.50, roughly, kinda steep for a small box of fries…

terekkincaid @ 07/01/2007 12:54 PM EDT
And here's the Micro Magic regular website, complete with crazy flash games:

Oh My God, Micro Magic.
My sisters and I used to eat those after school all the time. I had completely forgotten about them.
I remember there was another type of microwavable french fry that was a step up from Micro Magic, because it was a lot saltier and thinner and thus tasted like McDonalds french fries.
Usually, though, Micro Magic was what we had in the freezer.
As far as foods I want to taste again, I could really go for some of the Chicken Strips they have at Disney World right now.

I don't know if I remember these specific fries, but I've had many different variations throughout my life. All pretty gross/delicious.
The one food I wish I could eat again: Carnation Breakfast Bars, hands down. If they started making them again, it could possibly be the achilles heel of my veganism… Probably a good thing they don't make them.

Hey Matt…first post, but I've been reading this site religiously for a few years now.
I've posted a few of these previously on my own blog, but I'm missing these so much:
- E.T. Cereal - imagine chocolate- and peanut butter-flavored Alpha Bits with a limited vocabulary. Really delicious. The closest I've tasted is Reese's Puffs. Just not the same, though.
- Frusen Gladje ice cream - this was soft gourmet ice cream that came in little white tubs. My maw-maw used to buy them all the time, and it would be our special treat.
- Pac-Man pasta - in any of the three varieties, Plain, Meatball, or Chicken Soup. I know all Chef Boyardee pastas are basically the same, but I bought these babies up until they stopped production and forced me. I recall our local co-op store carried them well into the early '90s.
- just about ANY TMNT food products, especially the pies. That old article opened up a floodwave of tastebud memories.
- Showbiz Pizza - pre-Chuck E Cheese Showbiz Pizza is one of the best I recall ever tasting
Great website, and have a great 4th of July everyone!
Oops, it seems they're called Corn Quistos. The cornquistador was their mascot. Anyway, they were godly.
Another thing I really miss is the pizza rectangles my school cafeteria would serve every Friday. Nostalgia has most likely sweetened that memory a bit, but still…

Well I would say Vinalla Coke but it's back! Not in Canada yet but this is why I in a boarder town.
I would love to have a Fintstones Push Pop again, I was a fan of the strawberry flavour. I also want an ice cream bar called Freaky Feet. When I was about 7 I went to England with my rents and whenever we saw a Dickie Dee I would get a Freaky Foot, they were white and blue striped and the big toe was covered in a chocolate shell. I went over the pond again in high school but I wasn't able to find them.
Happy Canada Day!

Everyone seems to remember the Jell-O Pudding Pops, but most people fail to mention the glory of the Jell-O Gelatin Pop. I absolutely loved those. When they decided to re-introduce the Pudding Pop a few years ago I was ecstatic, but the joy was short lived as it quickly made me miss my Gelatin Pops even more.
As someone else mentioned I also really miss Kentucky Fried Chicken's Chicken Littles. Also Hardee's used to make a mean pork tenderloin sandwich.
BTW… Jeremy Whatsisface… click my name for a trip down memory lane.
One of my favorite things had to be Super Mario Bros. gummy fruit snacks. They had a little continuous contest where if you came across a blue princess then you mailed it in and got a free t-shirt.

I came across Choco Tacos at the Hostess store last weekend. Better believe I bought them. Corn Pops are definitely still around too.
I'm signed up for this international snack exchange over on LJ…I'm hoping I'm matched up with someone from the UK or Japan. Too bad frozen fries wouldn't travel well. Wait, these ARE frozen, right?

Holy crap, MICRO MAGIC FRIES!!! I ate those almost…all the time when I was a kid! It was the reason I was a fat little kid, I ate them practically every day back in elementary school…and then they were discontinued.
Stuff I'd want to eat again?
Pepsi Blue
Turtle Pie
I've never tasted a McRib or an Arch Deluxe, so I'd like to bring those back and eat them.
Kurdt: The SoBe Love Bus Brew shirt was the only one I ever spent money on. That stuff was so addictive.

A few of the foods I'd like to taste again have been featured on this site.
Micro Magic Fries
C-3PO's Cereal
Summit Canybars
Frisco Burger from Hardee's.
Hardee's is still around, but all of the stores have left the area. I don't know if the Frisco Burger still survives though… It would come and go when we still had them locally.
Speaking of Corn Pops (no, I don't have anything better to do) have you seen they've recently been released in the chocolate & peanut butter variety?

Bill did a good job with the Fruit Bars and ROTJ cookies.
There was this microwave pizzas they sold in 6th grade that were phenomenal.
Here's the big one X-Ers: NITRO Cola. I had it one time like in S. Carolina. Does anyone have ANY information about this product?
Matt, Kneg, and Invader Norbert, thanks for going out of your way last night but I don't know anything about ENTOURAGE either.
Yes, I have seen the animated TRANSFORMERS movie but all I remember is "You've got the touch, you've got the Powerrrr!"

OK Soda!!!!! I loved the crap outta that stuff!
Also
Microwave Brownies, I cannot remember who made them and they weren't that good, but hot brownies in four minutes were amazing.
Pudding Pops, although freezing snack packs is a great substitution.
New York Seltzer
Giggles
Hardee's Sourdough Bun Burgers, before they joined with Carl's Jr
Oh, and it's not food, but I wish Perkin's would bring back their wishing well with the crappy toys. I lived for that when I was young and would always eat my little cowpolk so I could rummage through that thing and get the toys.

It seems you don't actually reclose the box when microwaving them, just when you need to shake them loose. I'm ashamed that I didn't correctly remember the exact instructions. I'm going to go Seppuku now.
Also, I used to get a pizza thing that was similar to pop tarts or toaster strudels, except pizza and they could easily be snapped in half into two triangles. I know some big brand made them but it's lost on me right now.

I will have to echo Ben's thought and choose a box of Nintendo cereal. One Christmas my brother, sister and I asked real hard for a Nintendo Entertainment System. On Christmas morning there was a box with a gift tag on it for all three of us. We huddled close, counted to three, and tore off the wrapping paper together to find…a box of Nintendo Cereal. The funny thing is, I suppose an unopened box of that would be worth quite a bit more now than an NES.
Oh, I would also love to bring back Fruit Wrinkles, Fizz Whiz, and Jiminy Cricket's Wishing Stars Cereal. The cereal can be found here: http://www.lavasurfer.com/cereal-post5.html about ten entries from the top. According to that site, it must have come out when I was 3 or 4 years old, yet I plainly remember getting the Star Gazer thingy in a box of it and my parents helping me try it out in the backyard. If anybody else knows anything else about this cereal, I'd love to hear about it!
On a related note, it's great to see Twix PB coming out. Now I know I wasn't crazy for thinking there was a peanut butter version of Twix when I was little.

I saw someone mention PB Crisp way up in the posts, and it reminded me of how much I miss PB Max candy bars. Anybody remember those? The peanut butter in the middle was more like the stuff out of the jar than any other peanut butter candy at the time. My government/economics teacher in high school had an open offer of free extra credit points for anyone that could find him a PB Max candy bar. Alas, the extra credit went unearned all year long.

The one they bring back periodically mcrib fashion that looks like their regular chicken sandwhich with gop on it or the original that was shaped like a more traditional sandwhich? They're both good but I remember the original one being even better.

Magic Toe, your web site is actually what sparked my remembered love for Showbiz Pizza. I have the fondest memories of the original Chuck E. Cheese…ours in Metairie, LA, had The King. There's a thrift shop standing where it was.
And I have to agree with the Gelatin Pops. I have yet to find an ice cream bar that comes close. Popsicle put Pudding Pops back into production, but they're thinner and not quite the same. And came up with a few more:
- Bonkers candy - Starburst is okay, but just doesn't cut it for me thanks to the wonder of Bonkers. Loved watermelon flavor, and the commercials with the giant fruit falling on people.
- Pepsi Blue - the only soda I drank for a long time.
- Sobe Mr. Green - like a green-tinted heavily-caffeinated Dr. Pepper, only with a better taste and cool psycho lizard graphics on the label.
Enjoy!
KB :
I think I had one of the last cans of OK Soda, my brother lived in Austin at the time and found 1 12 pack left on a clearance shelf 6 months after they had discontinued it.. I savored those 12 cans, had 2 a month for a real great 6 months.. I wish I had saved the cans though.. I miss 1800IFEELOK, that was always fun.
I miss that zebra striped fruit gum, that stuff just had the best flavor.

I have an entire dead junk food meal planned.
First, I'd have a big bowl of Batman Returns cereal. That was chocolate Chex with marshmallows (BTW, Chex just came out with "Chocolate Chex" and they're REALLY good!). Then, I'd have a McDonald's Mc DLT with a side of Cool Ranch Munchies chips (those just died last year, at least in MY area). Then for desert, I'd have a Turtle pie AND a Choco Bliss! And I'd wash it all down with about 10 gallons of the wonderful Pepsi Blue!
But if I could only pick one of those, It'd hafta be Pepsi Blue. GOD I loved that stuff! Just to note, I recently called Pepsi's consumer hotline and had 3 comments:
1) I really like Pepsi Summer Mix (which dispite what you may have read on the net, tastes NOTHING like Blue) and I hope it becomes available year round.
2) Please make Mountain Dew Baja Blast available in 12 paks and 2 liters.
3) BRING BACK PEPSI BLUE!!!!!!!!
Their response to my comments were, in order:
1) No
2) No
3) and no
Drats!
P.S. Pepsi's hotline number is 1-800-433-2652. Everyone call them and tell them what dead Pepsi product YOU want back (*cough*pepsiblue*cough*)! Maybe they'll listen if we all harass them!
Ya know reading about all this food from back in the day is making me think either I missed out on a lot of good food when I was little, or Canada sucks when selling food. Half of this stuff I have never heard of.Mostly the cereal, I remember seeing Cookie Crips commericals when I was little but we never had it in Canada then when I was in high school I finally bought, but it was nasty, I guess reality is a hard blow sometimes.
I like hearing about all this food and thinking about what it would taste like though, I live through your memories.

It's okay, Manimal. The soundtrack is indeed just magnificent. I can't think of a part of the movie that I don't love for one reason or another, but the last 5 minutes is an animated joygasm for me. I wish the last chapter on the DVD went back another 30 seconds so I wouldn't have to hit back and then rewind a bit when the credits roll. Oh well.
I'd apologize for dragging the convo to TF so much this week, but hey this is the week to do it, am I right?

Kneg and Manimal: I love that song. It reminds of the movie "Boogie Nights" when Mark Wahlberg trys his hand at Pop Rock in the studio.
"You gotta win to be a winner! Never give up when it's tough. You gotta fight to be a fighter because only the strong will survive!"

Four words…
Nature's Harvest Orange Banana Juice
In the early/mid '90s, I discovered this awesome, awesome, awesome juice. I drank the first glass and expected the usual orange banana flavor. Guess what? It tasted like banana juice, without a hint of orange.
From that moment on, each and every time we went to the grocery store, I made sure we picked up a bottle of it.
Then, just as soon as I'd fallen in love with it and had started drinking it like we all drink soda, it disappeared from the shelves.
I've Googled and Googled and Googled this juice many times, to no avail.
Anyone else remember this?

itfemail: Almost Home cookies are not a figment of your imagination–my grandma always used to bring them for me whenever she visited. Nabisco even has them on their list of discontinued cookies.
Personally, I would like to see Giggles one more time, more for the sentimental value rather than some insanely good flavor. I realize that most of the handful of now-discontinued foods I ate as a child in the late 80's and early 90's would probably make me vomit at the sight of their over-processed ingredient lists from hell…
Oh, and Crispy Critters. After all, it was the low sugar cereal with lots of KA-RUNCH.

Good Lord Matt you are awesome for loving Micro Magic fries! I used to think I was the only person ever that ate the fries or any of the other products from that company. The Micro Magic burger was really good but the grayness of the patty (even when reheated) was unsettling to me even as a child. Ew.
And to answer the question of what I wish I could eat again: Strawberry Koala Yummies and Rice Krispies Treats Cereal. Oh man that was the best cereal EVER!

Posted by
Megan @ 07/01/2007 7:36 PM EDT
Jeremy Whatsisface - Sadly the website isn't mine, I just wanted to make sure you had gotten to see it.
Ken - Oh yeah, I forgot that Micro Magic also made milkshakes. They were frozen like a brick and you had to heat it up and then mix the warm and still frozen parts together. They were not very good. I had blocked those from my memory. Good catch. I think my family only bought them a time or two. As a kid I was all about making the homemade milkshake. We didn't have a blender. I just had milk, ice cream, a glass, a spoon and my own sense of determination.
As far as Micro Magic fries go - they were terrible! For some reason or another they were a staple in our fridge around 1987. I think they always sounded good until you actually started to eat them. Then you were like, "oh yeah, these are terrible. I should have just had a bowl of Rice Krispies."

The Hidden Valley Ranch kids flavors. Came in Nacho, Taco, Pizza, and Super Creamy. I actually ate quite a few salads as a kid with those things. I'd probably eat more if they came back.
Mountain Dew Pitch Black II. I loved the sweet and sour grapeness of it. Although that PB Target Icee sucked.

*Heeree- I remember eating a smores cereal when I was around 4 or 5, so it would have been mid 80s. I seem to remember there being a wizard on the box maybe? But I just remember it was the most amazing tasting cereal I have ever tasted. It was like golden grahams, small but normal shaped marshmellows…and to be honest, I dont remember how they worked the chocolate in??? I am so glad someone else remembers this cereal!
In addition to that…
*Smurf marshmellows! Blue of course, with an odd light cotton candy taste to them
* I lived on the Keebler pizza chips and Potatoe skin chips! I cannot find either of these anywhere in any type of incarnation!
* Severly missing Planters brand cheese curls in the canisters. I cannot find them anywhere in Colorado!! Are they even still being made???
* TMNT cereal, I dont care what anyone says, I liked them, and if you let them sit in the milk for a couple of minutes, your throat and mouth wouldnt get torn up! LOL.
* Sunshine punch kool aid.
* Jello 1-2-3 and banana flavored pudding pops- if they existed and my mind isnt playing tricks on me?

First, I'll second Crise with the Burger King Italian Chicken Sandwich. It popped up from time to time into the early 2000s, but not having eaten at a Burger King in at least two years, I don't know if they have lately. It was always my favorite of their sandwiches. Nothing but melted mozerella, a long Italian-seasoned chicken patty, and tomato sauce. Heavenly.
I had no idea they didn't make Cini-Minis anymore. It was a favorite sweet snack of mine in the mornings.
For cereal, Strawberry Shortcake. I wasn't usually a huge fan of fruit-flavored cereals, but for Strawberry and her pink corn bits, I made an exception.
Fond memories of Pizzarias and Potato Skins, two of the only brand of potato chips I ever really liked.
Oreo made it's own brand of cookies and cream ice cream in the mid-80s, before every other ice cream company on the planet jumped on the band wagon and it became a standard flavor. To this day, I've never tasted a cookies-and-cream ice cream quite as rich or filled with genuine cookie pieces.
Oh, and a local favorite, Sealtest. You can still see old Sealtest signs on some places in the South Jersey area. I think they died sometime in the 80s, but their vanilla was the creamiest I ever had.
Matt reviewed Oreo's "Big Stuff" gigantic cookie awhile back, too. And I'll add the huge white-chocolate-macadamia-nut cookie cafeterias on my college campus sold. I'm not a huge fan of white chocolate or macadamia nuts, but when put together in a massive, sweet, soft sugar cookie, they just made sense.
Snapple made the world's most divine cream soda in the 80s. For some reason, the only place that sold Snapple then (as well as Froz-Fruit bars) was the aerobics studio where my mom worked. They were one of my sisters and my favorite treats after a class.

Wow. Now I'm craving all kinds of things!
I would love to get my hands on these things again. Sadly, I only know the actual names of two of them and I'm hoping someone else actually remembers what the others are called:
*Chef Boyardee Roller Coasters. Yes, I know most Chef stuff tastes the same but not these. They were different and I loved them.
*Keebler's Opera Cremes. My grandmother always kept these and I loved them. Chocolate cookies with a lemony-flavored cream in the middle? Sounds gross but it was awesome–especially with a cold Sun Drop to drink!
*There was a snack that I think was made by Keebler (could be wrong) but they were potato-based (I think) and were basically two "sticks" twisted together. They came in a plain potato flavor but also other flavors–I think there was a nacho cheese one.
*A pasta sauce company (my memory says it was Ragu and I can almost come up with the actual name of the product but I just can't spit it out) made these jars of pasta, meat and sauce together that you just heated and ate. I swear they were called Ragu Pasta…something! It's driving me crazy! Anyway, they made a spaghetti one and there were others but my favorite was one with shell-shaped pasta and the meat in them was shaped exactly like rabbit food pellets! Anyone?
*The final one. I have found other people who remember them but no one seems to remember what they were called. They were granola bars but they were cylindrical-shaped because the centers were sort of a quite chewy, nougat-type substance. They were marketed as chewy granola bars but the granola wasn't really chewy, only the wonderfully over-sweet chewy center. Please tell me one of you knows what I am talking about!

I'm pretty sure they still sell Dunkaroos.
And there was a version of Poppcock that was Rice Krispie Treats! Chunks of them…bite-sized!
I also miss the TMNT Chef Boyardee. Even though it was mostly the same thing, it was basically the only kind I ate. (Hell, Brian Regan even mentions it)
And I hate to theorize this…but Vault seems to becoming harder to find. All of my usual Vault hotspots don't have it, I haven't seen the 1.5 liter bottles in months (maybe because that size rightfully got discontinued), and the 12 pack of cans are becoming harder to find. I like that Vanilla Coke is back and all…but not at this cost.
Oh hey, what happened to the Twinkies with cherry filling mixed in with the cream. I want those back, or directions on how to locate them.

Something jarred my memory, I want those wax bottles full of sickly sugary sweet colored liquid. But just one.
I don't know that they are not around anymore, but Velamints, the chocolate kind, were great.
And it's still around, but Kraft bought the company years back and it hasn't been the same. I want Jacks Pizza. By far the greatest frozen pizza in the world.
I always ate Ludens Cherry or Lemon coughdrops. Those were great for being the popular kid in class for the day. There's nothing mediciny in the taste.
Chubby Hubby Ice cream. It's still around, but the hardest to find of all the Ben and Jerry flavors.
This blog makes me hungry.

I want the cheese pizza rolls I had when I was a kid. I can get cheese pizza rolls now, supposedly, but they're just melted mozzerella. The one when I was a kid had like Velveeta type cheese and peppers in them. They were made by Patio and they were the best pizza rolls in the history of mankind.

Vanilla bean Snapple. Oh dear Lord, how I miss that stuff.
And those McDonald's flatbread sandwiches. And those pitas at Wendy's. They'd all go great together.

kb, that is very true, I love our Smarties more than M&Ms. I have never had a Kit Kat in the US but I'll have to try to see if I notice a difference. I do know that Cadburys isn't as good in the US as it is here in Canada, I think b/c Cadburys is owned by Herseys in the States?

Great minds, Luap
Looks like the "Locate A Kwik-E-Mart" section on the 7-Eleven website doesn't go live until tomorrow. Assuming one of them is close enough to the revival house that's playing Grindhouse, Gremlins AND The Goonies this coming month, I think I will end up making the trek. I'm not a Simpson's fanatic or anything, but it's too cool to resist.

This is going to date me…but back in the early 70's Libby's used to make this canned stuff called Libby's Fruit Float. It was kind of like ambrosia. Of course, you can't get it anywhere. Also, my favorite Snapple flavor in the whole world used to be Orange Iced Tea. Then they stopped making it and made Peach Iced Tea instead. I even e-mailed the company and they sent me a very nice e-mail saying it wasn't very popular and being discontinued. Sigh!

Let's see…. New York Seltzer Cola and Berry, Pepperidge Farms Croissant Pizza, Cherry Cola Slice, Cajun Cookin' Shrimp Creole (I seem to be the only one to remember this frozen dinner from the '80s, and the only one who really misses it), Taco Bell's Taco Light, Quik Wok's Pork Fried Rice, Pepsi Blue, Dr Pepper Red Fusion, and Taco flavored Doritos.
I found out that Quisp Cereal is still being made, so every once in a while I'll order a few boxes. Nice to find one of my childhood favorites is still around.

I'm going to mix up my post a little after reading everyone's lists.
Things that you should all not take for granted because I can't get them in Canada:
1. Cookie Crisp (I'm milking a box I bought and only eat in every now and then as a 'treat'.
2. Apple Jacks
3. Sonic, White Castle, Jack in the Box, TGIFridays…yet we get all the delicious commercials which SUCKS
4. TARGET
5. Half the candy Matt mentioned in his Halloween Candy posts
6. For the longest time we didn't have PayDays and now that we have them here it's kind of lost its charm.
7. Happy meals that come in those boxes with the handle. Over here you just get a paper bag with pictures of barbie and hotwheels on it or whatever the toys are at the time
8. All I have to say is that we JUST got Holliter and Abercrombie & Fitch LAST YEAR
9. Orbit gum. like WTF is that?! last time i went to the states I bought 6 packs of the bubble mint whitening gum.
10. YOO-HOO (i'm crying a single tear for the last can I have sitting on my desk waiting for a moment of pure desperation.
These are things I loved, as a child, that I could only get in the states…and only get to enjoy when I go to the states and the months following until I run out of my surplus. *tear

I would give anything for Hot and Cold Nerds! I'd eat all the "Hot" ones and then cool my mouth off afterward with the "Cold" ones. There's nothing like that out there anymore (at least that I'm aware of). All the Nerds candies are fruit-flavoured. Nothing wrong with that, but come on! HOT AND COLD! Delicious.

I do miss E.T. cereal. I was only about 6, but I remember the moment that chocolate/PB combination hit my taste buds, it was like tasting heaven!
I also remember loving Strawberry Shortcake cereal as well as C-3PO's. I've never found their replacements to my breakfast pleasure!

I loved TMNT cereal (remember, I live a life of controversy) and I'd love to see a cereal with chex pieces and marshmellows again. Hell, I think I'll just frankenstein some myself.

Heh ella if it's any kind of consolation, Happy Meals pretty much always come in the cheesy little paper bag over here too. They might break out the boxes for the really big promotions, but if so it's the exception, not the rule. As for your #3, I very nearly said Sonic for that same reason (we get constant commercials but the nearest one is 60 miles away). I'd want to eat it more than just once though, so I didn't.
Really wishing Monday wasn't so close right now…at least Wednesday's a holiday
I HATE the fact that Happy Meals only come it stupid bags now…I remember when the boxes could be turned into little houses for some of the toys, or -as I think someone else mentioned before- when they came as plastic boats that actually floated and Halloween pails.
Another reason to cry for today's youth….

Fruit Slush.
(Regular) Lime Gatorade.
The 30 tortellini from my favorite (now closed) restaurant.
There was some fruity flavored ice cream bar- instead of chocolate covered it was kind of citrus-y. It wasn't that old but I don't know what it was called.
Surge.
Mauna Loa Island Guava- I actually have a just-past- the date jug in the fridge, but after it's gone I may never get another, unless they get more in at Big Lots.
Apple Raspberry Fruit-something-or-other beverage. (I'm blanking on the exact name. Yeah, a lot of these are beverages, sorry.)

Do they ever do boxes anymore? I can't remember the last time I've seen any…if they brought back the McBoo pails they'd be a smash.
Yeah, McDonald's still does boxes every now and then. Actually, I think they just did one for Shrek 3.
I was at my favorite store at Zern's the other day cuz they're closing and I'm COMPLETELY MOTHERFUCKING DISTRAUGHT OVER THIS (although thankful I can catch the going-out-of-business sale) but I managed to dig underneath some tables and unearth a giant box of flattened Happy Meal boxes and MIP toys from the early nineties. Pretty sweet. I'm still debating whether or not I want to make sad puppy dog faces and make a really low offer for an unopened case of Nestle Magic and hope they'll take pity and give it to me for like $10.

Hmmm… Foods from my childhood I'd like to have again… Okay.
Burger King's Black Stack Barbecue Griller. It may have been a novelty burger to promote Men In Black 2, but it was the first Fast Food item I could order straight off the menu without alteration.
O'Grady's Sour Cream and Onion potato chips. Those things were heaven in a bag, and I haven't seen them around in over a decade.
Jolt Cola. Original recipe Jolt Cola. That was some good stay-up-all-night-so-you-can-watch-cartoons-from-the-80s-on-YTV-fuel.
McDonald's Pizza. Not the personal ones, the big family-sized ones. There was an interesting phenomena when you microwaved a slice that made it taste as if there were chunks of pure sugar in the crust.
More coming as I think of 'em.

Hmmm, Like five years ago I got drunk in Los Angeles and came upon a Fat Burger for the first time. I ordered a Chili Cheese burger with everything. I have never had a burger quite as good as that one, even from the local Fat Burger.

I miss Tosca chocolate bars. Sort of like a thicker, flatter Twix. But more wafery, less biscuity.
And Milo chocolate bars. The proper ones that were compressed Milo covered with a layer of chocolate. Not the crappy "energy bars" ones they produce these days.

I could say a million things about this thread. On topsecretrecipes.com (a great site btw for recipes emulating food you buy in stores like twinkies and oreos to dishes you buy in a resturant like big macs, and foods you can't buy anymore like the arch burger) they used to have a food Graveyard, that people used to talk about discontinued foods they used to love, products that taste the same they make now (like spiderman cereal tasting like smurf berries) or petitions you could sign. For some reason I read that board off and on for about 6 years. It turned very soap operaish they got to know each other a little too much for my tastes (asking how each other's kids are doing, and acting like a quilting circle) so I went only a couple of times after I found out it changed. They turned it on and off over at topsecretrecipes.com….the board, and now it's off.
For a couple of years I was an avid reader of a site called yesterdayland.com, they had a section that was a directory for fashion, music, tv etc. with pics and a summary for each. Their message board forum had different message boards for different topics. Fashion, tv, music, school, and my favorite, food. I went their first, dunno why, I just find it fasinating someone would "love" to find a certain candy bar, cereal, drink, etc. and the memories. Like I share here. I learned about Marathon bars, funny face drinks, and things of that nature that are before my time.
The site closed the webmasters said there wasn't enough money coming in to make the site worthwhile and it was time to close up. I loved that site, there is a fansite yesterdayland.org (I might of heard of x-e through that site, the hungryman breakfast article I know of, but I am not sure if that's the site) with a forum, and a link to an archive of found bits and pieces of yesterdayland.com of the cache in the google search engine, and various things, but it's not the same as the original, most nothin' is.
What I wouldn't mind having back? For this thread there
was the food my high school served (probably still does I can't go in there too bad) had the best food IMO!! They had these nachos…melted slightly spicy cheese sauce bright orange classic nacho cheese, over round chips, with a big dallop of sour cream, and if you wanted, taco spiced ground beef. Huge in one of those paper baskets. They also had pizza that didn't quite taste like it was done but that was the beauty of it. Cheese or pepperoni i believe. Raw doughy crust with greasy cheese and pepperoni. Normal triangle slices none of that square bullshit that was for the grade school. We also got little debbie nutty bars for dessert sometimes and those star crunch cookies which I am fortunate I can still buy.
My best friend is in his late 40's and he buys banana twins sometimes and everytime he buys them he reminds me he used to get them at the school cafeteria in grade school. Those are some old banana twins. He's old enough to be my dad I know. But I love him
We also during a hot time for the Blazer's we had these loafs of bread that were dyed diagonally black and red that franz the bread company made. The DAY they served grilled cheese at my grade school THE DAY!!! with those pieces of bread (they did look nasty but they probably tasted like normal bread) We had to leave for a fancy thing I don't even remember what it was it was choir or something it was a half day field trip and I didn't get any of the blazers themed grilled cheese!! One thing I loathed though about school food was the grilled cheese LOL hard as a rock.
And I hope I didn't make this post so long that people are annoyed with it and skip it. I felt I poured my heart out into it and educated whoever read the whole thing. Moral of the story? Go to topsecretrecipes.com for discontinued products recipes.

There was this microwave popcorn that came with a brick of caramel that you would, I believe, also microwave then melt over the popcorn to make the absolute best caramelcorn ever! I sure do miss that stuff. Along with many of the previously mentioned foodstuffs above.

I wish I had not read the entire comments section of this blog….I am left now with the craving a lot of items that I can't have. Magic Middles, PB Crisps, and Burples.
I guess I'm fortunate because I can go up to our vending machine here at work and get Potato Skins (bacon and cheese flavored)
I miss a Popsicle brand ice pop that had different layers of colors/flavors. Little Debbie Caramel bars and Little Debbie Peanut Butter Crunch bars. I also am the only one that can remember when Planter's made a chocolate and peanut butter candy (very much like a reeses cup) that was in the shape of a peanut….ANYONE remember these?

They still do boxes for Happy Meals in Australia, they don't have the little handles any more tho. They're nearly the same shape but have just a plain hole for holding onto instead.

What I really miss are the bagel dogs from Schwan's. They had cheese in the middle, and just a better overall bagel than the ones you can buy at the store. And Crispy M&M's! I loved those, but they don't make them anymore ;_;
There are also things that I *know* still exist, but I just can't find them anywhere (and I crave them so bad!), like Pepperoni Pizza Combos. The closest I can get around here are the Pizzaria Pretzel kind, but that's just not the same. And BBQ Flavor Blasted Goldfish. Just when I got a huge craving for some, I couldn't find them anywhere! By now, I'm starting to suspect that they've been replaced by the Blazing Buffalo Wing flavor instead XP
And do they even make the barbeque flavored Chicken in a Bisket cracker anymore? I remember having it once, and it was the most awesome thing ever, but I've looked for years and only seen the original flavor.
I cannot tell you how much I loved Micro Magic fries! And the Micro Magic cheeseburgers? Awesome. You could then pair the two for the world's greatest meal…for an 11 year old.
Matt, do you remember the Micro Magic milkshakes? A freaking microwavable milkshake. That blew my mind as a kid. Add that to the nasty fries and greasy burger, and you have the Micro Magic Trifecta!
The one long-lost food
