06/28/2007: Summer Megaparty: Ninja Turtles Pudding Pies Commercial!

Oh God, oh God.  Somebody give me the textual equivalent of an orgasm, because I need to type it out over and over again.

You’ve probably read about my fascination with Hostess Ninja Turtles Pies, those being the disgustingly awesome green pastries filled with vanilla mutagen pudding.  If I had to draw up a short list of things that personify X-E, they’d be pretty close to the top.  When I wrote the article, all I had to go on were my memories and a few old pie wrappers.  Short of finding a Hostess bakery with zero regard for expiration dates, the only missing piece of the puzzle finally landed in my lap tonight.

Yes, finally, I have the Hostess Ninja Turtles Pies commercial.  And I’ll share it with you in just a minute.

On a conservative estimate, the ad is 16,000 kinds of awesome.  The Ninja Turtles were absolutely serious about making these pies a success, evidenced by their willingness to throw away all pride and poise as they don baker hats and rap in unison about vanilla pudding.

“They’re lime, they’re delicious, you know that’s true…because they’re filled with MUTAGEN GOO!”  Oh God, I am going to sing this jingle to every person and animal I come into contact with forever and ever.  They totally should’ve released it as a single.

Wait, the pies weren’t lime, were they?  I know the pudding was vanilla.  Maybe the crust was lime?  I so don’t need new questions at this stage…Matt craves closure on the Turtle Pie issue.

Most of the commercial features the Turtles baking the pies and serving them to random kids, but midway through, we finally get some live action money shots of the real deal.  And because of that, some random M.C. Escher knockoff gets his ass ousted from my Windows wallpaper collection in favor of GRAINY PIE PICS OH GOD YES!

A lot of us have had our memories play tricks on us over the years, but these pictures put it all to rest: No, the pudding was never green.  Just the crust.  Though I was always more of a Ninja Turtle Pie fan in concept than in practice, they do look darn appetizing here.

I’m just ridiculously pleased with life in general right now.  Click here to watch the commercial, and see if it can’t turn your summertime blues green.

Gushing aside, I think I’ve stumbled onto something else pretty amazing here.  During the spot, the Turtles take special care to serve their desserts to this kid.  Take a good, long look at him.  He seemed familiar, and sure enough, I’m like 84.7% certain that that’s the very same kid who accidentally dropped the pre-mutated Ninja Turtles down the sewer drain in the very first episode of the cartoon series.  Click here for a shot of that kid.

In the commercial, he looks a few years older…I’d say about three years older, which is the exact amount of years between the first episode and the stupid pie commercial.  The Ninja Turtles were clearly rewarding their indirect creator in the only way they knew how: By providing free pies.  Am I reaching?  NO.  I am RIGHT and I deserve prizes.

And by prizes I mean pieses.

UPDATE: They’re not saying “they’re lime, they’re delicious” in the commercial.  They’re saying “they’re mondo delicious.”  I spent six weeks trying to find Mondo Gecko in the sixth grade; you’d think “mondo” would’ve at least entered my permanent lexicon for it.

Got to love that green pies, huh?

Well, it’s the same kid if he bleached his hair…

Chestnuts roasted by Terek @ 06/28/2007 9:24 PM EDT

No way!  Same color hair!  He’s just in an alley in the older pic.  Shadows darken hair!

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/28/2007 9:26 PM EDT

The best part is when Raphael’s sai so expertly slices the wrap from the pie.

Second best part is when Rock Steady tries to infiltrate their sewer-kitchen.  He’s hungry!

Best. Article. Ever.

(These pies are my very favorite 80’s food.)

Chestnuts roasted by Crazy_Mainer @ 06/28/2007 9:35 PM EDT

Matt, for some reason, from a past article or blog, I thought you didn’t like these pies. I remember eating these things so fast I got hiccups.

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 06/28/2007 9:36 PM EDT

That’s the thing!  I hate them!  I hate pie in general!  The thought of eating these makes me sick!  But I still loved them, because they were green and goofy and brought to me by Donatello.  Whenever I got one, I kind of just flirted with the crust before throwing the rest out.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/28/2007 9:37 PM EDT

Sorry for the double post, but to put Matt’s mind at ease, no the outer layer was not lime flavored. It was just a slightly thicker, and green food coloring version of the sugar glaze on all the regular flavors of Hostess fruit pies.

Chestnuts roasted by Crazy_Mainer @ 06/28/2007 9:39 PM EDT

I thought so…but what are they saying in the commercial then?

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/28/2007 9:41 PM EDT

I LOVED these as a kid. I didn’t even like Ninja Turtles but my brother did so we got these pies all the time. I loved anything pudding pie, so I was beyond thrilled when I found that Hostess pudding pies are BACK. I never thought this day would come. Of course, they are not green, but at the convenience store down the street from my house, I bought a chocolate hostess pudding pie. I thought maybe it was just REALLY OLD, but it didn’t appear to be. Sadly I threw it away after 1 bite, it was actually really friggin gross…I remember these being more creamy or something…these new ones were too dry. Hmm, maybe they WERE really old… But, it was still exciting.

Chestnuts roasted by Bertha @ 06/28/2007 9:42 PM EDT

Your endless cover of these pies makes me so effing happy. My mom bought these for me and my brother ad nasuem when I was a kid, because they were cheap and we loved anything with the Turtles on them.

I want to taste one of these so bad though. When I was a kid, I was a real finicky eater. I recall eating these but never really enjoying them.

Now, all I want to do is travel back in time, get really stoned and eat a pile of these.

Chestnuts roasted by K-Mo @ 06/28/2007 9:43 PM EDT

If X-E were a graduate thesis, this would be the big final piece of the puzzle.  Congrats on the find, Matt.  Now I just need a commercial for Handi-Snaks, Jay’s potato chips, and Fun Fruit and I have my daily 4th grade lunch in video form.

Chestnuts roasted by Yelnick McWawa @ 06/28/2007 9:46 PM EDT

Oh Matt, I’m so happy for you that you found this…Turtle fans everywhere unite and reminisce.

WOW that was the hardest word to spell I had to ask several members of my family and then google it.

totally worth it.

Chestnuts roasted by ellaenchanted @ 06/28/2007 9:47 PM EDT

Did they say ludicrous?  I never had one of these.  If I ever had a pudding pie it had to be chocolate or lemon.  To me vanilla was always the boring choice.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 06/28/2007 9:49 PM EDT

Last comment before I stifle it. Every time I read, hear or see something nastolgic I always laugh. Can’t help it. It’s like an old girlfriend I had and she would always have a hard time catching her breath when she ate something she had never had before. (Which, for pure entertainment value, I always took her out for sushi and Korean food ;) ) Anyway, I wish Matt would find an advertisement for the 1986 (?) summer Happymeals that were ships. I always wanted the rocket ship but for some reason I kept getting the ferry.
What is wrong with McD’s? They will never do cool stuff like that again.

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 06/28/2007 9:49 PM EDT

I have no freaking clue why they had the word “lime” in that jingle…maybe cause it barely rimes with “pie”?

OMG so I was home in my glorious state of Maine last week, and I too saw a chocolate Hostess pudding pie at the Irving gas station in my little town!!! I was shocked! I thought maybe they had had them on the east coast for a while? You cant even find Hostess pies here in Colorado, at least not the places I shop! I see very similar Mexican versions though, which look interesting!

Chestnuts roasted by crazy_mainer @ 06/28/2007 9:51 PM EDT

Hostess needs to bring them back.  Vanilla pudding pies covered in a green shell.  There’s still gotta be a market for that.  What could be better?

Chestnuts roasted by Doug @ 06/28/2007 9:52 PM EDT

Wow. That’s it. *gets up and leaves room to find a snack…preferably something similar to a Turtle Pie*

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 06/28/2007 9:53 PM EDT

The sheer level of jubilation in this article is just amazing.  I never had Turtles pudding pies, and I’m sitting here grinning like an idiot just on general principles.

Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 06/28/2007 9:56 PM EDT

I don’t care if I wouldn’t like it, I would eat these every day if they were still around. I don’t know what it is, maybe the filling drizzling down, whenever they show food drizzling it looks good!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 06/28/2007 10:15 PM EDT

I don’t remember Turtle pudding pies, apart from previous mentions on the site. They weren’t the sort of thing my mom would have bought for us, anyway. I actually don’t like Hostess snacks, but I have a generous aversion to most baked goods.

Chestnuts roasted by Thomas @ 06/28/2007 10:15 PM EDT

I meant to write that I have a GENERAL aversion to most baked goods. I don’t know what I was thinking.

I haven’t read the article yet but glancing at it i’m in awe!!  I recently have been kinda distracted by other stuff I like on the internet but this reminds me why I keep my loyality to X-E!  Matt has still got it! :D

Chestnuts roasted by Goob @ 06/28/2007 10:21 PM EDT

They’re just begging someone to sue them because their frosting looks too much like bodily fluids

Just like Bluedini…

Chestnuts roasted by Cotter @ 06/28/2007 10:21 PM EDT

This made my freakin’ day! Yay, Matt! And I choose to believe that they’re using lime to describe the color and not the flavor.

Chestnuts roasted by Laurelai @ 06/28/2007 10:22 PM EDT

Someone mentioned on yesterday’s thread that if there were to be a movie based on X-E, they would want to be portrayed by Kevin Smith. That got me thinking about a radio interview he did here in LA just last week. The hosts (Kevin and Bean for those of you who can listen to KROQ-FM) asked what movies he liked this summer. Kevin Smith said he had the opportunity to see many of the biggest movies of the summer in advance and his choice for the best movie this summer is…

Ratatouille.

Chestnuts roasted by Thomas @ 06/28/2007 10:28 PM EDT

I HAVE SHOCKING NEW DATA RELEVANT TO THIS CONVERSATION.

I’m pretty sure they’re saying “mondo delicious.”

Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 06/28/2007 10:28 PM EDT

I never tried the pies. I don’t like them any more than Matt does. I’m not crazy about real pie, much less the kind that comes with teeth-itchingly-sweet filling and too-thick crust that falls apart when you touch it. I don’t think these were all that common in South Jersey, anyway. I don’t really recall seeing them much.

That said, I DO remember the commercial. Pardon the pun, but even then, it was pretty sweet (and rather amusing) to see the turtles baking sugary green confections.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 06/28/2007 10:29 PM EDT

Once again, thanks for the memories.

Chestnuts roasted by iAMYou @ 06/28/2007 10:30 PM EDT

My only memory of the Turtle Pies is that my mom always refused to buy me one because they were green. I NEVER HAD ONE.

Oh God, oh God.  Somebody give me the textual equivalent of an orgasm, because I need to type it out over and over again.

Exaxtly what I did when I saw the pic on the front page. Dear XE, this brings me back I loved these so damn much. I can still remember the taste, with the creamy vanilla of it…ohhh…

And honest question: is the Matt that links to XE in his name the same one that doesn’t? It’s starting to confuse me.

Well, this article made me scour my kitchen looking for SOMETHING to soothe a Turtle Pie craving…I wound up with a PB & J.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 06/28/2007 10:47 PM EDT

Matt, have you “after” cigarette yet?LOL Cause man,you enjoyed writing this article quite a bit.

Anyways,I forgot all about the stickers. I had so many of them things. And the fact is,I hate these pies. I would scoop out the filling and just eat the shell. Anyone else? Please tell I’m not alone in this.

Chestnuts roasted by shortcake 79 @ 06/28/2007 10:52 PM EDT

I agree with Jedoc. They are saying “They are Mondo Delicious!”

Whew, this confused me when I read the article. I had memorized the song from a way back in the day, and then people start talking about Lime flavor’s. I didn’t remember anything in the song about Lime flavor. I had to watch that commercial 2 times.

Chestnuts roasted by Jester @ 06/28/2007 10:53 PM EDT

I agree with Jedoc, it sounds like “mondo delicious” to me.

Chestnuts roasted by Theory Girl @ 06/28/2007 10:55 PM EDT

Yes, they’re totally saying “mondo delicious.”  I’m foolish.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/28/2007 10:55 PM EDT

Wow, I miss these pies so much.  I remember being at the mall on a Friday night in high school and buying one from the attached grocery store. I was really too old to eat these in public so I hid it in my pocket and would sneak a piece now and then while talking to friends from school. That didn’t last too long since it was a big mess.  I had to go in the bathroom and just pig out alone.

Chestnuts roasted by kingchachi @ 06/28/2007 11:03 PM EDT

Here with another 3 parter:
1. I’m with Jedoc. I don’t remember these at all but it’s still fun to read about.
2. Apologies to the Gripp for misspelling your name yesterday.
3. Everybody’s jubilation came yesterday but mine was today. E.Claire’s 1st trip to CHUCK E. CHEESE. My long lost ebay winnings arrived, continuing my “Summer of GREMLINS”. The NECA singing and dancing GIZMO for E.Claire and the NECA 2004 action figures for me. I know I am 3 years late BUT THESE ARE THE GREATEST ACTION FIGURES. So well crafted, so well designed,so GREMLIN-y.
Yea! YEa! YEA! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Thanks Manimal…

“‘Fresh from the sewers to you!’

How did I never make that association? I’m dumbstruck.

Whenever I hear the song “Panama” by Van Halen, I still automatically think they’re singing “Manimal!”

Chestnuts roasted by MysteryD8 @ 06/28/2007 11:30 PM EDT

The thing is, I remember both types of turtle pies.  The ones in the commercial and the ones that Matt says never existed.  They both tasted the same, though.  Could they have done a switch near the end to try to keep interest up?

I also agree with asdfnick, that kid looks like the one from the BK Kids Club.

We must all incorporate the word ‘mondo’ into our everyday speech.  It is mondo important.

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 06/29/2007 12:28 AM EDT

I had one of those things once that I can recall. If memory serves it was on a day that I was dropped off late at school, probably because of some lame appoiment that my mom must have felt bad about having to drag me to, therby making up for it with the pie. Or that’s my theory anyway…

So awesome. The other pies, even the ones with pudding, just didn’t compare. Now I think if I tried to eat one of the regular ones I’d probably puke from the sugar, let alone what I’d do with one of these. But wow, good old days.

Chestnuts roasted by Skywalking @ 06/29/2007 12:39 AM EDT

Yes- this is awesome. I know I ate these, but my mom doesn’t remember it. :( It was such a great idea, though!

Jessica Marie- I agree with your proposal! Just as long as “mondo” is not connected with “burger”- I don’t need to go in the grinder.

Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 06/29/2007 12:44 AM EDT

I can’t remember eating these, but I’m sure I must have at some point.  Maybe I should ask my mom…

I think Matt may be the only person on the planet who noticed that the kid in the ad was the same kid who dropped the turtles down the sewer.  Who knew turtle pies fit into continuity in such a mondo way like that?

Firefox spell check doesn’t like the word “mondo.”  Screw you too, buddy.

Chestnuts roasted by Paul W. @ 06/29/2007 1:10 AM EDT

I actually looked around to see if I couldn’t find the textual equivalent of an orgasm, but judging by the criteria that it shouldn’t take longer to read than it takes to have one I couldn’t find anything suitable.
This is like the Godfather Two of blog entries. Which would make Dinosaur Beach One, which is equally apt since it was arguably just as awesome. I want to scale down that frosting gif and use it as my avatar for everything.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 06/29/2007 1:15 AM EDT

That’s gold! How cool would it be to find a Turtle pie still in the wrapper?

Matt do you have a copy of the commercial for the Crunchabungas that Will Vinton animated? I’ve been dying to get my hands on some TMNT claymation, and I can’t find it anywhere!

Ps- Congrats on being #1 on Google for Crunchabungas

I know I’m late for the party, but I come seeking advice from the the X-E cat folks:

A friend’s mom just took in a litter of three kittens that we’re going to be taken to a shelter.  I’ve been considering getting a cat for some time now, and I got convinced tonight.  But my question is this:  how old does a kitten need to be before you have them spade or neutered (I know those might be spelled wrong, please let it pass this time)?  And how much, roughly, would it cost?  I’m trying to figure out how to budget it in if possible before the next paycheck….

Thanks in advance for any help!

Chestnuts roasted by Shuanfu @ 06/29/2007 2:19 AM EDT

And the same question for the ‘first shots’ visit…cost???

And ‘X-E Cat Folks’ would make an awesome movie title…

Chestnuts roasted by Shuanfu @ 06/29/2007 2:22 AM EDT

I totally missed out on these things as a kid.  And I mean totally.  Until I started coming here last year, I didn’t even know they existed.

Anyway, it’s nice to read something happy.  It’s raining like fuck here and it isn’t going to stop for another week, probably.

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 06/29/2007 2:26 AM EDT

Finally a little bit of closure.  I know I sucked down a few of these in my time.  My favorite color has always been green, so any food product with that tie in has always been choice for me.  Especially green Hulk Hershey’s syrup.  I was poopin’ green for weeks.  I only regret being out of the country while the green ketchup fad came and went.

Chestnuts roasted by Mad Cow @ 06/29/2007 3:39 AM EDT

Oh, I wish I’d been old enough at the time to be into Turtle Pies - they sound mondo awesome! (Lame, but I worked the word in at least)

And Shuanfu, about the cats (I’m a huge cat person; I actually have about 10 full-size hardcover cat encyclopedias). I can’t help you with cost, because it’s probably different for where you live, but I can help with when cats should be neutered or spayed. On average, a cat should be spayed or neutered at six months, however some may reach puberty at different times. Some breeds, such as Siamese and Burmese, develop at about five months, and a kitten born in the fall may reach puberty the spring of that year, while one born later may not until the spring of the next year. If your kitten is a female and is showing signs of coming into heat and male cats are hanging around, you should make sure she stays inside and does not go out until you have had her spayed - one time outside may result in a pregnancy (as my sister found out with her cat)!

Also, just as a general caution, you should make sure that you do not have any ivy, poinsettia, philodendron, chrysanthemum, lily-of-the-valley, or azaleas inside your house or available for easy eating, as these plants are poisonous to cats. You may also want to use disinfectants that aren’t extremely strong, since cats can absorb the chemicals through their feet and can lick them off their fur, and you should keep your appliances such as ovens, dryers, and microwaves closed or check before using them, as kittens can be rather curious and try to crawl into them.

Anyways, sorry about the novel-length post. *blushes* I tend to talk too much about cats…

Chestnuts roasted by Frakkyfire @ 06/29/2007 3:39 AM EDT

I bet I could make these. Like… I could get some Pillsbury premade pie dough, unroll it, trim it smaller, fill it up with pudding, pinch it closed, and bake it. Although the pudding might get gross being baked, but maybe if I froze it beforehand…. hmmm… glaze is pretty much powdered sugar and water, right?

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 06/29/2007 4:42 AM EDT

Definitely not a cat person but I work at a pet store and a vet comes to give low cost vaccinations a couple of times a month. Most of them come in packages that are anywhere from $30-50. I don’t know what shots kittens need, but they’ve got all kinds of packages with dumbs names like the “Luv My Kitty pack.” Don’t really know anything about them, just thought I’d mention it. Not very helpful, I know.

I need to start cooking with nunchucks.

Chestnuts roasted by Sallee @ 06/29/2007 8:19 AM EDT

Hostess Ninja Turtles Pudding Pies: One of the rarest TMNT food product was made by Hostess in 1990, they were the “Hostess Fruit Pie” with a green sugar crust, and “Vanilla Puddin’ Power!” inside, according to the package. The first run included a sticker of one of the turtles or a group shot, then in ‘91 with the release of the second film, the pies included a “TMNT 2 trading card”. Alternatively, a version was released with regular crust and green-dyed “Ooze” filling.

Not my article but just a bit of information on Ninja Turtles Pudding Pies. I remember the pies having more then one flavor tho I’ve had the vanilla but I also remember having a lemon one as well…..maybe it was all just in my head but I remember a lemon flavored one but since I can’t find the flavor on the net…I guess it was in my head.

Chestnuts roasted by Anonymous @ 06/29/2007 8:34 AM EDT

u kno, being born in 84 i definitely felt the impact that was TMNT… having a little brother only brought on an onset of owning (and often painfully stepping on) every tmnt product in existence. Being a girl I couldn’t beat them, so I had to join them…I always remember going to the store to get a new turtle and always being pissed that I couldn’t collect something as cool that WASN’T barbie because she was lame in comparison. I remember my mom getting pissed from letting our ooze dry on the couch coushins essentially ruining them with what looked like perma dried snot basically. I never had these pies, although i wish i did, but I rememeber the Dickie Dee’s ice cream bike guy comin around and I heard the bells ringing and I went into my brother’s room, stole a dollar, ran out onto the street and bought a giant popcicle in the shape of donatello’s head with black bubble gum eyes. YESSsssss. it was totally worth the guilt.

I defiantly remember this commercial and defiantly remember the pies as they were a staple of my childhood diet.  There was a corner store by my house that used to sell them and I would always walk down there with my friends and buy them. And as Anonymous @ 06/29/2007 8:34 said, I do recall eating both green and “regular” colored pies.  It brings back painful memories thinking back to the day when the store told me they stopped selling them.

Ok- I’ve got it. Corey haim got extremly angry that Feldman made the cast of the TMNT movies. When the pies came out he tried to eat them all up so no one could enjoy them. (That’s who the kid is in the picture.) Sadly it made his hair and teeth fall out.

“The beaker of inebriation is again offered to me, and already I am inhaling its fragrance, already I am aware of its bubbling music—but first a libation to her who saved a soul who sat in the solitude of despair: Praised be feminine generosity! Three cheers for the flight of thought, three cheers for the perils of life in service to the idea, three cheers for the hardships of battle, three cheers for the festive jubilation of victory, three cheers for the dance in the vortex of the infinite, three cheers for the cresting waves that hide me in the abyss, three cheers for the cresting waves that fling me above the stars! (R 221-222)”

As has been noted however, reading that takes longer than actually having an orgasm, so it doesn’t really count.

ellaenchanted, where are you from? Besides my british family you are the only other person I know to call an ice cream man a Dickie Dee.

Mr. Nymous:  Mondo Kierkegaard quote, dude.

K-:  You’re right, if we stay on topic much longer, we’ll lose our net cred.  Quick, segue!  Segue like the wind!

Huh.  You know, when you follow your name with a colon, it makes a reverse emoticon that looks like those Ninja Turtle figures where their lips are touching in the middle, but their teeth are exposed on the sides.

Crap, still mostly on topic!  Giant ape juice!  Giant ape juice!

OK they came out in 1990, forgive my error in stating they were my favorite 80’s food. LOL. I KNEW I should have checked on the exact date of when they were introduced! I figured though in this crowd, someone would correct me if I needed correctin’! :)

Damn Matt and his pie talk.

I just spent 45 minutes of my lunch break trying to hunt down a gas station that sells Hostess Chocolate Pudding Pies when everybody only carried the apple and cherry fruit ones… lame!

After all this time, one of the cafe’s in my building sold them all along.

Happy ending.

I got this in an e-mail from Mirage Studios:

“A retro-licensing program will kick into high gear in 2008 with merchandise based on the 1980s TMNT cartoon series. Lots of adult-sized gear will be available! Can we get a “Cowabunga!” from the faithful? Awe yeah!”

Cowabunga!!!

I really like the pies they sell at wal-mart they are called chocolate eclair and they aren’t like these turnover style pies but they are little pies in little foil pie pans.  I usually peel the top off carefully and eat that, then carefully eat the rest, that’s my favorite part, the bottom.  It tastes really good.

The top is a top crust with chocolate icing stripes on it and the bottom has the bottom crust with vanilla pudding in it.  I’ve never had ninja turtle pies I’ll ask my cousins if they did.

I had the fuckin female stereotype oh that’s a boy’s thing you shouldn’t have it crap.  Even though I did get a couple ninja turtle toys for christmas that I still have and one time I got a can of ninja turtle pasta in sauce stuff that I saved for a special occasion and I saved it for a snow day and that was a great snow day indeed.

congrats on your new kitten shuanfu and neat t-shirts, I might have to do that sometime.  I got a simpsons t-shirt decorating kit once with paints, a paintbrush, and iron on transfers I still have it in the box even though I tried using it once when i was a kid and it turned out horribly and my grandma gave my resulting t-shirts to my cousin whom thought they were awesome but she was a lot younger then me and they were banned from watching the simpsons which bothered me a lot and still does even though they are all grown up now.  She said “hey dad! look I got these simpsons shirts Jodi screwed up neat huh?” he kinda rolled his eyes.  That was my first time with an iron and it was a mess.  My grandma was so pissed. she originally bought the shirts for PE, I needed white shirts.  We didn’t get a PE shirt we were supposed to bring a white tshirt and the gym teacher was supposed to write our name and school on it.  I honestly thought she bought them so i could make simpsons shirts out of them!!  LOL  Anyway I hope you enjoyed my story.

I LOVED hostess chocolate pudding pies. At first I would eat the crust & all, but soon I started to hate the crust and I would open it and just eat the pudding. To this day I don’t eat the crusts on the fruit pies (or any pie for that matter), I only eat the filling. But if they bring back pudding pies I promise I will eat the crust!!

Chestnuts roasted by Alyssa @ 06/29/2007 3:06 PM EDT

Goob:  I LOVE those Wal-Mart pies, except the chocolate eclair one.  Never been a big fan of those.  My favorite ones are pecan and pumpkin.  I can now eat those flavors without waiting for Thanksgiving.

Here’s a wiki link about turtle food tie-ins and mentions both kinds of turtle pies:

Wuzzlerific. Good luck figuring out where I got that from.

Alyssa

You know I wasn’t sure if they even still made the chocolate pudding pies, so I decided to hop to the many, many gas stations surrounding my work to look for them.  I went to the cafe in my building, after my search returned nothing, to get a salad when I saw them on the rack with the other sweets.

So hostess pudding pies have either been brought back or they never stopped making them, because I just polished off a chocolate pudding pie that tastes exactly as I remember from years and years ago.

Goob

haha entertaining story I must say, it sounds exactly like something I would do.

Did anybody suggest “Summer Nights” for the summer juke box?

Chestnuts roasted by fistpittingnork @ 06/29/2007 3:25 PM EDT

Matt

According to wiki, they DID make turtle pies with green filling.

Read up, my friend:

Hostess Ninja Turtles Pudding Pies: One of the rarest TMNT food product was made by Hostess in 1990, they were the “Hostess Fruit Pie” with a green sugar crust, and “Vanilla Puddin’ Power!” inside, according to the package. The first run included a sticker of one of the turtles or a group shot, then in ‘91 with the release of the second film, the pies included a “TMNT 2 trading card”. Alternatively, a version was released with regular crust and green-dyed “Ooze” filling.

I don’t know.  Most of that Wiki entry is just repeating info from my TMNT food article, if I don’t say so myself. :)  Not saying it’s not possible because I used to think it too, but I want to see proof, because proof is in the pudding.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/29/2007 3:51 PM EDT

Tahnks for the info FrakkyFire, it backed up several things I discovered while researching last night.  I haven’t had a cat since college, and it was my roommates.  In fact, we had a cat AND two sugar gliders (basically flying squirrels); it was like wind kingdom every night with the chasing.  But oddly enough, the cat was only playing with the flying rats and would even ocassionaly serve as an ATAT with the Gliders as the pilots.  Nothing is more hardcore than a CatTank marching into a room, and then two winged ninjas launch from it’s back.  I think they planned it during the day just to mess with us…..

proof is in the pudding….goddamn. :D

I just got an ACDC live concert DVD to watch while working out. I think I pulled something. Seriously.

Matt:  No problem.  I tried to do a Yahoo and Google search on them earlier, but outside of the stuff you wrote and the usual petitions,I couldn’t find anything on them. Which is weird because outside of the cereal they had, this is the food item I remember the most.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 06/29/2007 5:02 PM EDT

I never had the Turtle Pies… I’m not sure if it’s just that they never came to canada, or if I wasn’t into the whole pie thing back then. Truthfully, I wasn’t even much into the Turtles until they came out with the transforming action figures.

And for the record, I’m the guy that said i’d want to be played by Kevin Smith in the X-Entertainment movie.

They look like pizza pops.

When I was in 9th grade, I would go to Circle K every morning before my classes and buy a TMNT Pie for breakfast (and sometimes one for lunch), those things were soooooo good and I hardly ate any other Hostess snacks. When they stopped making them, I was pissed. Oh well.
