06/25/2007: Summer Megaparty: Bubblicious Flavor Reviews.
Just got back from a little vacation with my extended family to Atlantic City and Long Beach Island. Atlantic City was more of the same, but Long Beach was loads of fun. We used to rent a house there every year, back before the prices skyrocketed. Haven’t explored the town in almost a decade, and totally forgot how cool it is. You’ll see an example in tomorrow’s entry. Tonight, with time running short before my midnight Megaparty deadline, we’ll have to settle for reviews of five different Bubblicious flavors.
Savage Sour Apple: Despite its name, I got more of a “cherry Jolly Rancher” vibe. Definitely had the strongest flavor of the bunch, which means it’s better as surrogate caffeine than for casual chewing. It’s
really sour. Not the kind of gum you’d offer to Grandma, and probably my least favorite of the five.
Paradise Punch: This was my #1 gum of choice during middle school. The flavor isn’t as overpowering as I’d remembered, but maybe my taste buds were just screwy from the Savage Sour Apple mess. Sort of the gum equivalent of a Hawaiian Punch, which was probably what Bubblicious was going for considering the flavor’s name.
Watermelon Wave: Really mellow. You’ve gotta jab the gum wad with your tongue pretty hard to get any kind of flavor burst deserving of a sourpuss face. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Most brands of Bubblicious gum are really sour or sweet, and it’s impossible to chew them without contorting your face in ways that let everyone around you know that you’re chewing gum. Watermelon Wave is great for those occasions when you want to chew gum, but really shouldn’t.
LeBron’s Lightning Lemonade: It’s times like these that I wish I knew more about sports. Is LeBron James cool? I mean, is he really cool? He should be, because this flavor is AMAZING. It’s not at all just some everyday “lemonade gum,” tasting much more like Minute Maid’s new “Cherry Limeade” juice. Best of the bunch. Paraphrasing a testimonial from an old Cats Broadway promo, “I’d chew it twice more.”
Blue Blowout: I’m happy that Bubblicious found a happy medium for their requisite “blue” flavor. Candy companies tend to overdo blue. This one’s pretty mellow, all things considered, tasting like a cross between cotton candy and a snowcone. A cotton candy flavored snowcone? A cotton candy flavored snowcone flavored bubble gum? When it takes that many words and that much confusion to properly describe the taste nuances of bubble gum, you know you’ve got a winner.
On a final note, never buy gum from the gift shops in an Atlantic City casino resort. These were $1.98 a pack.

Lebron’s team got destroyed in the finals, so at least his gum is good.
RIP Chris Benoit. =(

Oh man have you seen the new kind that dyes your tongue black? I haven’t tried it yet but it looks pretty gross/awesome.
Everytime I chew Bubbalious I always got a nasty toothache. All that dam suger, I should send them a bill for all my dental drillings. Oh and Lebron was a King who was proven by my San Antonio Spurs, that he is just a lil’ prince. And yes I am aware that he is a billion-jillion dollars richer than I ever will be. So my sarcasm is well justifed. Oh and that SAVAGE SOUR APPLE, dam it should come with a warning. It will put you in a diabetic coma.

Dollar Tree has 4-packs of the Lebron Lightning flavor. I’ve almost picked it up on several occasions. Looks like tomorrow’s the day!

I’m in shock about Benoit, I met the guy several yewars ago backstage at one the last WCW shows…I didn’t even know until RAW came on tonight…just blew me away….I have read it may be a murder-suicide but I hope not….

Lots of weird flavors there. I’ll have to try some of them sometime on the cheap.
I’m more of an Orbit and Stride guy anyway and I’m pissed that they went up to $1.29 in my CVS
There’s this new gum called “5″ thats in Spearmint, Peppermint, and Cinnamon. I’d try it…but it’s $1.49 each.
odd how I won’t even consider chewing gum with sugar in it now… how times have changed.

And his wife and child…and now they’re saying it’s a double-murder + suicide, meaning pretty much the worst thing possible. Unreal.

Confirmed - it was a double murder suicide. Morbid, and sad. And horrible…his poor family.
police say they are investigating it as a murder/suicide situation. i can’t see benoit doing it. woman, on the other hand, could have had a screw loose.

I haven’t read any real confirmation on who did what to who. When I heard the story I figured they had some kind of carbon monoxide leak or something…horrible, but nothing like this.

Yeah, the story has been updated on SI.com. When I first read it, it just said he was dead. Now it includes the aforementioned murder/suicide.
The stupidest part is that RAW was SUPPOSED to have a memorial service to “Mr. McMahon”. When will they learn never to do a wrestler is dead or a wrestler has a drug/alcohol problem storyline?? Especially after Owen, Droz, and Hawk. So sad.

This was a one of those days that started out great, then just got crappy fast.
It’s my aunt’s birthday, so we take her to the casino to play some slots and have some lunch. I put in 20, do well for awhile, then go back to 20. So I didn’t gain or lose anything. My aunt put in 20, and came out ahead by a quarter. Of course, my mom put in 20 and promptly lost it.
The casino buffet was pretty good, too. We all had a fun time.
Then on our way home one of the tires basically falls apart from the inside. We pull aside to a gas station at first and begin the process of changing the tire. Someone stops to help and says we should be able to make it to our aunts house on it. He was right and we make it there. Of course, no one there knows how to change the tire, so we had to wait until my uncle got home from work to change it for us. My mom taking it to the mechanic tomorrow to buy new tires and fix the air conditioning, and that’s gonna be EXPENSIVE!
Then we get home, I turn on Raw, and hear about Benoit, Nancy, and their son Daniel. He was one of the al-time greats and Nancy was one of the underrated women in wrestling, I feel. RIP to all of them.
I wish I could say something about gum, other than that watermelon has always been a bland flavor for candy/gum.
Hopefully, I’ll be in a better mood tomorrow.

The Lightning Lemonade is the only one of the bunch I’ve seen, much less tried, and yeah, I was impressed with it too. Tastes like the cherry-lemonade I make with the flavored syrups at the new WaWa on the White Horse Pike in South Jersey.

Okay, bubble-gum story. Many moons ago, when I actually allowed myself to be dragged to church on a semi-regular basis, me and my mom were in a pew directly behind a woman with a billowy skirt. We stood up to sing a song and I had a large wad of gum in my mouth, which I am sure I was smacking to high-heaven throughout the entire service. I opened my mouth at one point, a little too widely and the gum proceeded to roll out of my mouth, down the pew in front of us, and into the woman’s skirt, where it promptly stuck.
At this point my mother started to engage the “you’re going to admit to it, apologize, and ask her what you can do in return to make up for this aggregious act” response. She didn’t even get a word out before I grabbed her hard by the arm, pulled her close and told her “don’t you DARE tell her….shut it….ack, no, we’re not telling her.”
I’m not sure if I should be proud of that, but that was the day I took the reigns in our relationship. I’ve never given them back, and I feel like I’ve helped her make some wiser decisions than she would have otherwise (and no, that one doesn’t stand as a good one). I feel bad about the woman’s skirt, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really mean anything.

Almost 2 bucks for a pack of Bubbalicious? That’s just insane. I’m not a thief, but personally, I’ve shoplifted every piece of candy/gum that I’ve gotten from a gas station since age 9. Keeps costs down and helps me feel better about the fact that the Man’s got me addicted to colorful, kid-friendly narcotics.
Also, I had the honor of being knocked over by Sabu while standing in a concession line at the Allentown Fairgrounds after Chris Benoit threw him out of the ring, chased him around a bit, and then jump-kicked him into me while my back was turned and I was ordering a funnel-cake. Godspeed, Chris and family.

I’m gonna be man enough and admit I cried watching the ending of the WrestleMania XX match when Benoit and Eddie Guerrero celebrated in the ring when they showed it on RAW last night. I can’t believe it. I mean, what would drive someone into doing something like that? It was his own son! It’s crazy.

I have tried most or all of these gums as my son will pass me a peice when we go to the “treat store” as he calls it. The lemonade one is good, and surprisingly the blueberry is as well.
When I was in elementary school we had to collectively as a class write a song. And this is how it went,
“Gum sticky gum gum,
Sticky sticky chewy chewy gum gum.”
I don’t know why but I still remember this song, melody and all to this day.

I still can’t see how Benoit can end his son’s life. From what I read, he had a family emergency during the weekend and did not show up on the PPV last night. Reports said the wife and kid were puking up blood so he had to go tend to them. Now they are all dead in some double-murder-suicide? I don’t know, I just can’t grasp my head around all of this.
I will state for the record this has been a very dark day. Mine started at 5 a.m. when my heart felt like it was trying to pound itself out of my chest and then it was followed with a two hour panic attack that left me more or less paralyzed. It stopped when my adrenaline bottomed out and I passed out from exhaustion. And other things I wish not to mention here occurred throughout the day and now Benoit may be a double murderer?
Fuck this day. Seriously.

I remember back to WCW Halloween Havoc ‘94, Benoit and 2 Cold Scorpio were the opening match. 15 minutes with Scorpio winning with a rollup, Chris is one of my 5 favorite wrestlers ever. He’ll be sorely missed. Also his wife was hot back in the late ’80’s. The angle where she turned on Rick Steiner and introduced Doom back then was excellent, she’ll be missed too. As for their kid, I get pissed when I hear about kids dying so he’ll be too.

K- I want to say Kneg but I think I’m too rookie for that. Anyway, I can relate to the church story. I am Catholic, by education, and I have a memory that will haunt me everytime I am in a quiet setting. The church I grew up attending had a balcony that was suspended 15 feet above the lower pews. (sp?) When the priest was giving his sermon, some kid threw a gosple book from the balcony and it hit the guy right in front of us in the head. To go from sheer bordom to total confussion is too much for a 12 year old to handle. I spent the next 30 minutes in convusions from silent laughter. I will still get the giggles in a quite place from having witnessed some poor bald guy getting brained by “the good word” and seeing his reaction. Head hits are priceless.
So sorry to hear about Benoit and his family. It reminds me when I served Sting (pre-crow stage) and his huge family as a host at Le Peep. They seemed so normal for a wrestler’s career.
I haven’t had Bubblicious since the Rasberry flavor in the eighties. I’m old…but hip.

So, gum? Too darn expensive most of the time is what I say. The lemonade flavor sounds delicious though. My Bubblicious of choice back in the day was the one with Cyclone in the name. (That’s all I remember, and it’s the first I’ve thought of it in years.) I did buy some Fruit Stripe a couple of weeks ago- haven’t had that in ten years at least. I don’t remember it being as sweet.

When I was little, I used to love the cotton candy flavored gum. It didn’t taste much like cotton candy, but damn was it tasty. Since your fifth flavor there doesn’t seem to be identified specifically as having a real world flavor (it appears to be blue flavored, like red jello is red flavored and pink lemonade is pink flavored) I kind of wonder if they didnt repackage Cotton Candy as Blue Blowout.
No, wait, a visit to the Bubbliscious webstie clarifies that Cotton Candy is still an available flavor.

I have tried the Lemonade bubblicious gum before it was good, a tart flavor to it. I every once in a while get in a mood to chew a piece or two of gum for a couple of days then i quit. This is like once a year or so, especially gums that make me curious like black licorice flavored gum which i have heard about but never have. I had this thing where i was sleeping in a car for a couple of months about 2 years ago, so i sketched on a drawing pad, listened to the radio, and chewed gum. My best friend “roommate” if you will chewed the rest of the gum because it was just sitting there tempting him. He chews like a cow and it’s disgusting. Walmart didn’t have a broad range of gum that night, i think that was the only flavor of bubblicious they had that night. I am not the type to chew gum to freshen my breath.
I love the gum I don’t know if it’s like that anymore but it’s the watermelon gum that is dark pink on the inside and green on the outside like a profile of a cartoon watermelon. Delicious. Overall I hate gum though the flavor disapears too fast and all the chewing.
I watched an old episode of america’s funniest home videos today, halloween version. There was this kid (the date was 1990 on the screen) he was in a batman costume, and he was carrying a mcpail (i think that is what it is called the mcdonalds spoooky pail) it was a frankenstein one. He was about 6 years old or so. There was this little weiner dog that ran out of the house barking and he ran up the walkway out to his mom and hugged her around her legs crying. I feel so white trash watching that show but I watch a minute or two every now and then.
Bill Great story as always Bill :) btw I feel weird calling you that because I have a cousin that is older then me (about 40) that is named Bill that I really like. He lived with me and my family for about 3 years and those were probably the best years of my childhood. I also have a cousin named Matt but I can deal with one confusion. Oh well.

Seriously, though, that’s horrible…I knew- but never taught- a student in Atlanta that witnessed a bear attack on another group of kids while on a camping trip. Man, i was all ready to gush about how awesome Blue Bubblicious is, but i have to say something about Benoit.
From back in the Nitro days, Benoit and Malenko were my 2 favorite wrestlers to watch because of their sheer technical prowess. Benoit was the Ken, and Malenko was the Ryu. I watched a little of Raw last night, but i had to turn it off because all of the heartfelt emotion was getting to me. I really don’t know what the hell happened, but no matter what transpires…he was an excellent wrestler, a great sportsman, and an individual clearly deserving a spot in the hall of fame, because i can’t think of many others who could outwrestle him. I will miss watching him, but at least there is lots of great footage from the past available.
Have fun arguing with Eddie, Chris. We’ll catch you the next time.
I always feel a day late and a dollar short, but I wanted to vent a little something about the Benoit situation. I was in disbelief because of the whole McMahon-exploding limo thing, was it another ploy? But When I found out his wife and kid were involved, I knew that was too far for even McMahon to go. So sad. After scouring the net for as much info as I could last night, and realizing they had cancelled the much hyped McMahon Memorial, I had to face that it is true. Then this morning on my way to work, my normally favorite morning DJ was going on and on about how the whole thing was fake. Again, if it was just Benoit could have been a reasonable thought, but I highly doubt that even the WWE would pretend to kill off a seven-year-old boy in such a manner. I can’t say I’ll never listen to that morning program again, but I have lost much of what little respect I had for that DJ. I agree with all of you, especially being a mother, when a child is involved, it is in no way funny. RIP Chris, Nancy and Daniel.

I’ve just recently started chewing gum again, and am having a horrible time trying to find one that I like… I tried Stride, and the flavor really does last too long. As in, 30 minutes after I spit the gum out my mouth was still coated in sugary peppermint jizz, and made everything I ate/drank taste like it.
So far my favorite is probably the Jolt brand of Icy Mint. This could just be because it’s caffinated…..

I wish I could still find that bubblicious style gum that had 7-up and Dr Pepper inside of it.
As for Chris Benoit, I don’t like wrestling so I have no idea who he is, though I do recognize his pictures. I just did a search on the whole story and from what I can see right now, the coroner is sure he knows what happened, but hasn’t made an official statement yet.
It’s a sad story, wrestling fan or not, it’s really heartbreaking to hear about the whole situation, but near disgusting to hear whoever did it, took away the future for a 7 year old child.

Didn’t Benoit have 2 kids? I’m not that heavily into wrestling - I watch each week by proxy because of my husband, but I heard one of the announcers say something about how ‘his kids’ were always so well-behaved. I haven’t heard anything about the other kid, is there really one?
Three if I’m not mistaken, but two are older and from a previous marriage. This was his only child by Nancy.

Makes sense. I wonder how WWE will handle this, with Benoit turning out the way he did.
To my understanding (and I’m not a wrestling guy anymore by any means) Tonight the ECW show will go on without making reference Benoit and the company will move forward from the situation.

As for this whole WWE thing…it IS very tragic wrestler or not i can’t get past the idea that he murdered his own wife and child. he was clearly ill and these “bizarre” facts they’re going to release creeps me out a little and I’m not sure I want to know.

I follow wrestling sporadically, and just found out about Benoit this morning on the radio. They were talking about how these thing occur during the tragic storylines. I’ve got Fark open in another window, and the postings there just gave up the latest details, and, well, damn. All we can do is find out what went wrong, and try to keep it from happening to us. Benoit’s legacy should have been a great one but now…
Last night’s RAW is also tainted now with the murder-suicide revelation. “He was a great father and a good guy blah blah”. I guess not

To be fair, the first version of this most recent “confirmation” used the word “may”. Minutes afterwards, it was repeated by everywhere without that word. I know it doesn’t look good and I’m not taking the side that what people think happened isn’t what happened but we should really wait until something a little harder is released.

Well, I finally made it to the party.
I believe I was friends with a guy named LeBron in Kindergarten. I just remembered that. No relation, I’m sure.
As for the Benoit situation, you have to wonder how his other two kids and their mother are doing. “There but for the grace of God go I” and such. Obviously very tragic.
Although it seems as good a segue as any (well probably not, but-) to ask this: I’ve been toying with getting back into watching wrestling (which my wife would hate, by the way). I’ve been away from it for years. My question is “Is it worth it?” Is WWE (or even TNA) any good now? I’d appreciate any opinions. Thanks.

Matt,
Any chance of a Summer Jukebox? You can have Will Smith Summertime, Summer of 69, Cruel Summer, etc.

If a summer jukebox does manifest, I am requesting that the song summertime blues does not get included.

Rhino - Not really. They just did this storyline in which Vince was killed by a limo-bomb.
enter bizarre details. Maybe it WAS steroids? either way the whole situation sucks drug induced or not.
in other news, I agree with the buying packs of gum from the casino Matt, I know last family New Year’s gone bad at Fallsview Casino I gladly laid down $15 for a pack of smokes and regretted nothing.

I paid $18 for a watered down drink in Cancun once because the plastic yard style cup it came in had an elephant engraved in it, though it was only like 12″ tall.
Now that I think about it I don’t know why I bought it, I don’t, nor have I ever, had any sort of fascination with elephants.
Benoit is not “having fun wrestling” with anyone up in Heaven. If there are such places to go when we die, he’s surely in hell.

I’m a little sad to think that sour apple tastes like cherry, I love sour apple flavour but I hate anything cherry! The lemonade flavour sounds great though.
I’m so excited to read about LBI! I finally can relate to a place Matt has been. I’ve been going to Long Beach Island every summer for 4 years now.

Depends on the version, doho. I like the cover by Blue Cheer. The evil fuzztone guitar makes a great wake-up call. Any heavy 60’s tune will do for a Summertime Juke-type Box. Either version of “Summertime” works for me, but I will give Janis Joplin’s take a slight edge. I also nominate Zepplin’s “Dancing Days Are Here Again” for inclusion for the fantasy juke.

Anonymous,
In case it takes a while for Matt to respond, he does have quite a few old articles that include pictures of him.
Usually wearing sunglasses. Perhaps with magenta hair.
If you don’t feel like digging around for those, then I have a collection of “through-the-bathroom-blinds” shots I’ve taken personally.
Kingklash, I know you just posted that 3 minutes ago but it took me 5 minutes of reading that before I could figure out and remember what I had said that would make you say that.

I can’t imagine there being a summer jukebox for xe, but if there were I would nominate “Vacation” by the Go-Gos. I would also be fore the banning of “Summertime Blues” That has to be one of the most overplayed songs ever.
And I hate to be such a debbie downer, but I hate summer. Not for anything other than hot weather, to me, is annoying. And today has been the worst. It’s all humid and like a hundred degrees and stormy. Moving is annoying and breathing is impossible.
WOW Sorry that was complainy of me. I am not really in that terrible of a mood, just anxious for autumn!

I used to love Bubblicious but I havent had any in years. I never did care for the sour flavors though.
I actually have a picture of me (in the red shirt) and Benoit.

Good call! Dancing Days and The Ocean are great rockin summer songs.
I also recommend:
LEN - “Steal My Sunshine”
Alice Cooper - “School’s Out”
Beastie Boys - “Fight For Your Right”
Mamas and The Papas - “California Dreaming”
Prince - “Lets Go Crazy”
Anything by The Beach Boys, but definitely “All Summer Long”, “I Get Around”, “California Girls”, “Good Vibrations”, and of course “Kokomo”.
Just to name a few in case this idea takes off like the X-Mas jukebox did.
HAHA, I gave (and still give) the Colonel so much flack for actually buying LEN’s album.
HAHAHAHA

Part of me wants to feel bad for Benoit, but I think the only reason for this is because he is famous. If it were some other random guy that killed his family I would say fuck him, burn in hell.It is really sad that his life ended this way. I don’t care what drugs he was on or whatever,it takes a coldhearted person to kill their own kid.RIP Benoit family

I tried to post very early this morning about the whole Benoit thing and it didn’t work, so hopefully it will now…
I love wrestling and was always a huge Benoit fan. He’s a fellow Canadian who wrestles in the ‘old school’ way- a real technical guy who never got caught up in stupid storylines or crazy characters. He was known as the ‘Rabid Wolverine’ and the ‘Canadian Crippler’ but never resorted to stupid costumes or schemes- people respected him for his talent.
My brother called me last night and made me turn on Raw to see the memorial. I hadn’t watched wrestling in a few weeks and this has floored me. Obviously, he was very ill and needed help. I am still in a state of disbelief.
RIP Benoit and family.

I don’t follow wrestling at all, but it certainly is a disturbing, sad story.
As for “Summertime Blues..” Man, that’s one of my favorite songs. Specifically, the live incarnation of it that was played at Woodstock.

Think about it this way, if he hadn’t killed himself in the end, would he still be getting the praise he is now as a renound WWE Wrestler? how can you say sure he killed two people BUT MAN WHAT TALENT.
It takes a seriously mentally ill person to kill a person…I think we are all too descensitized to the idea of murder, he murdered his own child. It’s not a storyline, it’s not a gimmick, wrestling was his profession, at the end of the day he came home to his wife and his son and was known as ‘Dad’ to a little boy, not the Canadian Crippler. This kind of act is inconceivable, no matter how famous you are.

Vince McMahon will be making an announcement about it on ECW tonite which starts in 30 mins EST on the SCi FI channel in case anyone is keeping up with it all. I’m just shocked by all this and just wan to know the facts of why such a senseless hting can happen, regardless of who it is,celebrity or not.

While I feel his career means jack shit now and will not at all defend him, before he threw it all away Chris Benoit has for as long as I can remember been considered one of if not the best in the business. Here’s a qoute from this very site, an article titled Stupid Bootleg Pro-Wrestling: “Wrestling fans are real familiar with Chris Benoit, unanimously considered one of the best performers in the world.” This was written in 2002.
I had more than a few Chris Benoit posters hanging on my wall growing up when wrestling was the in thing. I certaintly considered his matches a must watch. I was there to see his last WCW match against Sid Vicious when he “won” the world championship. I had a lot of respect for the performer and even after I started turning my nose up at wrestling, I could still acknowledge that fact that in the form of entertainment, there must be a best and that was who Chris Benoit was.
Now it doesn’t matter because he’s a fucking child killer. Nothing he ever did in entertainment could ever justify his final actions. I never had to watch wrestling again and that would forver be plenty easy but removing an idol from the walls of my past even if he hasn’t been an idol in many years…

Hi X-E’ers, I’ve only read about half the comments so far, but I really need to go downstairs for some ice cream, so I will be back later to read the rest.
I love bubble gum, my fav flavor was always cotton candy. The Blue flavor up there sounds delicious. Man, now I want bubblegum ice cream. Lol.
I don’t follow wrestling at all, but my brother used to own a local wrestling federation that was called CWF (Chaos Wrestling Federation) and I had a boyfriend that loved it, so I think its really really sad the Chris Benoit and his wife and son died. I’m very sorry for all his fans that will miss him.
Well its ice cream time, chocolate with magic shell and sprinkles!!! Yay!
I’m so behind here, and I’ve missed the whole damn MegaParty so far since work is crazy busy, but I wanted to tell you…Matt! I had an X-E dream the other night.
No idea why or what it had to do with the rest of the dream, but I dreamt that you posted here in the blog that you adopted a lion cub. And for some reason, it looked exactly like my cat. And we here were all discussing how awesome it was that you were going to have a man-eating beast at your beck and call.
Just thought that was amusing and that I’d share.
Hope you guys are having fun! Hopefully I’ll be able to join in before the party’s over…stupid job.
