Summer Megaparty: The McDonald’s Hulaburger!

Ray Kroc sounds like the name of a professional wrestler in a snakeskin singlet, but he's actually the guy who bought the McDonald's franchise for three bucks and a pack a gum, quickly transforming it into the megapower it is today. Kroc was an amazing personality -- a capitalist and an opportunist in every way, but also an artist who truly loved everything he exploited.

Still, every hamburger hero has his tragic flaw, and in Ray Kroc's case, it was the "Hulaburger."

See, Catholics weren't supposed to eat meat on Fridays, but Ray didn't want that to mean that Catholics wouldn't eat at McDonald's on Fridays. If the Catholics couldn't have hamburgers, what could they have? The simple answer is "fish," but Ray was anything but simple. He didn't want to serve fish. He wanted to serve pineapples.

Yes, the Hulaburger replaced meat with slices of pineapple, and as you might imagine, the sandwich flopped. Arriving and exiting in the '50s, the Hulaburger has lived on in every article penned by someone who wanted to make Ray Kroc look like a dummy.

But was he really a dummy? Pineapple burgers, especially when you think of burgers in McDonald's terms, really don't sound that bad. Maybe Ray wasn't insane. Maybe he just overlooked the fact that people who couldn't eat meat generally went to places other than restaurant chains that sold nothing but meat.

I was determined to know if the Hulaburger was actively bad, or maybe just misplaced. There was only one way to find out.

I had to make a Hulaburger.

The official recipe for the Hulaburger has never been disclosed, but even without any photographic evidence to serve as my guide, I think I can handle "replace meat with pineapple" without too many errors.

Through various articles online, I've gathered that the pineapple was grilled in butter to help make it an easier sell as a meat-replacement. So, I sliced some fresh pineapple, greased a pan and sung "Mele Kalikimaka" to my cats as it cooked.

While the pineapples browned, I had the ungodly task of trying to separate the meat in a McDonald's cheeseburger from the cheese. The cats, who were such a wonderful audience during my impromptu concert moments earlier, each received scraps of torn hamburger and I prepped for the next step of Hulaburger creation.

After slipping the pineapple into the bun, I realized that I likely sliced it a little too thick. Would've restarted the process with a thinner pineapple patty, but I was rapidly losing interest.

Upon the first bite, I can't say that it was either horrible or very good. Thing about it is, even when you take out the meat, McDonald's cheeseburgers still taste exactly like McDonald's cheeseburgers. So it was basically like eating a McDonald's cheeseburger and pineapples at the same time. Slightly wrong, but somehow, slightly right.

The Hulaburger made much more sense in the '50s than it does today, thanks to the nationwide Polynesian fad that saw Americans regurgitate a foreign culture in the form of raffia table skirts and coconut bras. Pineapple burgers fit right into that mentality. Today, it's a little harder to look at the photo below and call it "chic."

I can barely make popcorn without doing something wrong, so my presentation of the Hulaburger really shouldn't be the barometer. I can kind of see what Ray Kroc was going for, but maybe that's just because I get giddy thinking about my drunk ancestors stumbling into McDonald's to order "one a dem Hulaburgers."

Shit, is today Saturday? I made these last night. That means I spent Friday night dissecting McDonald's cheeseburgers and refitting them with pineapple slices. HELLO ladies!

I think I will be skipping the OXYGEN movie.

Nothing new to report here. She made me go up into the attic to get the baby carrier, etc.

Name? I will let you know when Mrs. Manimal tells me.

Who would have guessed Mr. Bungle will kill my Letter People thread. One last one (for nightmare fuel). Skip to the song of MR. X :fear:

I’d motion that Alec be downgraded as the superior Baldwin, seeing as he is a hypocritical ****tard, but the only possible replacement went wacko several years ago, putting himself in league with Korn’s Munky.

Therefore, I motion for a realization of the scene in SP: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. That was the movie where they bombed their house, right?

I don’t remember the Mr. X song from when I was in school. That is freakin’ awesome!! Second only to Mr. S, because you don’t trump Super Socks.

Manimal,

I’m all for more letter people discussion. We’ll have to spend more time preparing!
Glad you’ll end up getting some rest, hopefully… :)

Chestnuts roasted by Another Matt @ 06/24/2007 1:32 AM

My personal fave song was Mr. M.

Yeah, I will have to assign some Letter People homework :)

After re-examining my last post where I misuse verb tenses and punctuation, it’s probably time for me to turn in. That is until the 3:37 “my water broke” alarm clock goes off. As kb said, babies are like Santa Clause, they only arrive when you are asleep.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 06/24/2007 1:39 AM

Manimal, if you’re still up, did you go to movies by moonlight at the beach this year…it was an awesome lineup!

Chestnuts roasted by Another Matt @ 06/24/2007 1:45 AM

I hated when they brought the Letter People show to the school I used to work at….it drove me crazy…

Chestnuts roasted by Shuanfu @ 06/24/2007 2:05 AM

Just call me Super Dad cause right before I tried to get into bed, my 2 year old woke up fussy and I had to get her back to sleep. Mrs. Manimal is still nesting. We’ll see…

See, I even misspelled Santa Claus earlier.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Mr. N, Mr. G, Mr. B, Mr. M, and Mr. S are the ones that I literally cannot get enough of these past 2 days. Honorable mention to Mr. L, Mr. C, and Mr. T.

What harmful grease and cheese based food should I inject into myself at this hour?

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 06/24/2007 2:24 AM

What a strange coincidence… Some friends and I tried to steal–er–liberate a pineapple/table decoration from a local eatery just a few hours ago. Too bad we got caught, I could’ve made a Hulaburger of my own. Do you know how hard it is to smuggle a pineapple out of Golden Corral? Let me tell you: pretty effing hard! hahaha :P

How about this: one SNT we watch a particular MST3K episode on YouTube…solves all problems at once….

Chestnuts roasted by Shuanfu @ 06/24/2007 2:47 AM

I’m watching MST3K Zombie Nightmare on Google video. Adam West!

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 06/24/2007 3:06 AM

Dang… This makes me wish they showed Letter People when I was in school… I’ve got Mr. S’s song stuck in my skull.

On a semi-related note, when my little sister was in school, they did something similar to this, involving the inhabitants of ‘Letterland’. Can’t seem to find any info on it atm though.

Chestnuts roasted by DocDragon @ 06/24/2007 3:24 AM

Heh Shuan I’d be down, even if MST3K doesn’t lend itself to live blogging very well. I’ve had it playing in the background all evening; I just started one of my favs, Deathstalker and the Warriors From Hell. BTW here’s a nice convenient collection of links to MST eps on YouTube/Google Video.

Hello everyone, sorry being late agian but work has me playing catch-up once again. I bought a bottle of Mexican coke for a dollar and chilled itin the fridge. I’m going to see how good it is. Thanks for all those who responded to my posts! In other news, today I figured out how to route my tv and video games into my stereo reciever, so I can listen to audio from tv and VHS tapes, as well as from video games, through my stereo speakers, with surround sound! This AWESOME, because I have two super NES games that actually have dolby surround sound (Super Turrican and Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures). I can’t wait to play Lego Star Wars II on GCN with this setup, cause it uses tons of music from the original trilogy. Here’s a good survey question along those lines: What movie would you most want to watch with a big stereo hookup? I’ll start with Batman Returns, since I watched that one today. It made terrific use of the technology, not only with the music, but with the sound effects. You can hear things like paper rustling and pattering footsteps, real subtle details that add to the experience and help create the illusion that you’re watching something real.

Wow. I really am going to have nightmares from Mr. X! That song was beyond creepy…in fact, Mr. X’s own words sum it up best: “It’s all wrong!” Although I agree with one of the comments on the video – it does sound like something Devo would come up with.

So I’m guessing that pineapple isn’t a very common ingredient on burgers in the USA? Because most takeaways (not the fast food ones- more the corner shop or family owned takeaways) in Australia usually always have pineapple on at least half their burgers. Occaisonally we’ll get them at Hungry Jacks (Burger King) or McDonalds but usually only as a limited edition thing, like when we get beetroot on them as well.

I’m vegetarian now, but I still always put pineapple on my burgers with my vege patties now when I make them…its just weird without it.

One of the yummest things ever is actually a pineapple, tomato and cheese toasted sandwich. Is very good.

Oh lord those Letter People are FREAKY looking! I never remember them being in my class, I might have cried if I ever saw them when I was little. Lol.

I love MST3K!!! I would definitely be here for a discussion about any episode.

My eyes hurts so bad right now ’cause I went swimming in my brother’s pool for about 5 hours today. It was killing me trying to read all the posts, but I had to do it!

Seeing the Hulaburger just now reminded me of the new sandwich at Carl’s Jr. and made me hungry all over again. :-P

I love this website SO much! You guys are the coolest people on the internet…to me anyway…lol.

anyone else wicked stoked for “The Darkness” to come out this week for xbox 360???

Another Matt, I have lived in GA for 10 years; nowhere near the Jax beach.
DocDragon, it’s possible your sister was exposed to the watered down, PC version of the Letter People. Click my name for the story on that and other Letter People related whatnot.

The Mr. X song is definitely the “REVOLUTION 9″ of kid literacy songs. I didn’t know John and Yoko were residents of LetterPeople Land but apparently they were.

Finally, my daughter’s interest in GIZMO has turned in to an obsession. She never took a pacifier, has never had a blankie, etc. but my crappy 1984 GIZMO figure who does absolutely nothing is here first “attachment” thing. He goes with us EVERYWHERE.
I bought her a GREMLINS 2 poster (one is GIZMO for here, the rest are Gremlins for me) and I guess I need to place a bid on a storybook.

No more updates on baby.

Finally, everyone dogs CONGO but it is really just a modern day B-movie. Where STAR WARS and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK succeded in reviving the genre, CONGO was just too much.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 06/24/2007 9:54 AM

I think the doho-mani curse was broken by the word, “CONGO”.

I missed SNT! I hate work with a hating hate.

Manimal: I’m taking the girlfriend to Gettysburg this fall. I always get emotional standing where thousands died. That and Antietam.

Applebees now has a new item on the menu called the Aloha Burger or something and it’s a regular burger with pineapple slices on top! Not that bad!
